At the April 12 Shorewood Village Board meeting, Mayor Rick Chapman proclaimed April 29 as Arbor Day. In his proclamation, Chapman said Arbor Day is recognized throughout the nation and the world as a day to plant and support efforts to protect trees.

According to the proclamation, Arbor Day was first proposed in 1872, and first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska.

Shorewood will celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day April 24 at 12:30 p.m. at Towne Center Park.

Minooka Junior High Girls Volleyball Board members also the Minooka Junior High School girls volleyball team at the meeting.

The team finished its season with a 4A state title, defeating Frankfort Summit Hill and achieving a season record of 222.

“Such a title brings honor to you, your families, your school and your communities,” Chapman said in a resolution honoring the girls.

Public Works The board also approved the purchase of 15 cases of mosquito control tables for $12,738.

Public works will drop a tablet in each of the inlets throughout town.

Public Works Director Chris Drey said each tablet lasts for six months, and staff tries to get them all dropped in May. The board also approved the purchase of a 2016 Ford F250 pickup for $30,601.22.

Drey said the vehicle will replace one of the older vehicles in the public works fleet. The vehicle will be upfitted with lighting and a bed cover by public works.

Public works will also purchase a 2016 Ford F550 One Ton snow plow for $86,227.90. It will replace a 2002 Chevy dump truck that was sent to auction last summer.

The last vehicle public works purchased was a Nifty Self Drive Work Platform for $60,340. The department originally budgeted money for a track bucket, but found it wasn’t practical.

The Nifty machine is a four wheel machine, and is more stable than the machine public works was considering.

Drey said the life expectancy for the machine is 10-15 years.

Troy students attend ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day’ Event hosted by Argonne National Laboratory Four Troy Middle School eighthgraders participated in “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at Argonne National Laboratory earlier this month. Jazzpher Evans, Leila Mines, Lucy Magat and Hannah Konieczny spent the day touring Argonne’s

research facilities, engaging in hands-on engineering experiments and competing in a team challenge.

They also heard motivational presentations by female engineers and learned about STEM careers from world-class scientists and engineers.

The students said they most enjoyed learning about the various careers possible with degrees in engineering. They were nominated for the event by District 30-C Troy

Middle School science teachers Barbara Will-Henn and Colleen Fals. “A lot of girls think that science is for boys,” Fals said. “This was an opportunity for them to go and realize that they can do it, too.

It’s important that more females realize that they have the ability to do this.”

Troy School District 30-C added that its schools place a priority on science, technology, engineering and math.

Televisions and CRT monitors will not be accepted.

Artisans bring history to life with unique products Allegory Handcrafted Goods recently featured on INSP’s ‘Handcrafted America’ By jonathan samples managing editor

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but the pens made by artisans Chad and Jessica Schumacher present these storytellers with limitless possibilities.

The story behind Allegory Handcrafted Goods – a Joliet company that makes wooden pens and leather goods with materials as unique as each of its customers – started several years ago. The couple was working for the same telecommunications company – Chad as a marketing and business development professional, and Jessica as the head of a project marketing group. When that company was forced to close amid the Great Recession, the Schumachers and their 2-year-old son were left with nothing to fall back on.

But out of hardship, came hope.

Chad’s father – a retired barber and woodworker – taught his son how to make wooden pens and gave him the idea to start a business of his own. Thanks to a series of successful Kickstarter campaigns, the entrepreneurial couple quickly turned that idea into a unique and traditional business.

Recently, the Schumachers were featured on the television show “Handcrafted America” – a new series on the INSP network that unearths talented artisans across the country.

“The team behind ‘Handcrafted America’ has been really impressive to work with, and I think they did an outstanding job on the finished product,” Chad said of the episode, which aired last month.

During their segment, Chad and Jill gave show host Jill Wagner a tour of their business and took her through the process of making a one-of-a-kind pen, using wood from a World War II battleship – the U.S.S. North Carolina.

“They have one of the most unique set of skills that I have ever heard of,” Wagner said of the Joliet artisans.

Every Allegory pen is made using reclaimed wood with some historic or personal significance. That meaning could be anything from the beam of a family’s old vacation home to a 50,000-year-old piece of ancient kauri – a prehistoric tree found in New Zealand.

“While our woods have all these really cool stories, our favorite [stories] are always when people bring us wood that means something to them personally and is part of their story,” Chad said.

One of the most sobering stories

came directly from Allegory’s segment on Handcrafted America.

The same week the episode aired, Chad and Jessica were contacted by the family of a police officer who had recently died after his car collided with a tree.

“They are going to send us a piece of that tree to make pens for a lot of his colleagues on the force and their family,” Chad said. “Those are the [stories] that really hit home for us.”

In addition to pens, the Schumachers also make a wide variety of leather products, such as wallets and journal covers.

Jessica, who oversees the company’s leather working shop, said the idea to start making leather products happened by chance. After purchasing a $4,000 laser engraver to add the Allegory logo to their wooden pens, the couple decided to get more use out of the “most expensive piece of equipment” in their shop.

“Itwasdefinitelyacoincidencebut it grew out of having underutilized equipment,” Jessica said. Now, they use that laser engraver to cut out pieces of leather that Jessica sews together to make leather products with a different kind of unique story. Because reclaimed leather is inconsistent and harder to work with, the Schumachers use leather they said is “responsibly sourced.”

“What we did instead, was try to find leather that had a really good story behind it even though it was new,” Chad said.

Great Read wraps with ‘Chicago in the Movies’ What do Jake and Elwood Blues, Ferris Bueller and Dr. Richard Kimble have in common? They are among the many classic movie characters who have called Chicago home.

Cinema enthusiast Steve Frenzel will discuss Chicago’s iconic history in the movies as part of the 2016 Great Read’s Grand Finale – scheduled to take place April 28 from 6-8 p.m. at the White Oak Library in Romeoville, 201 W. Normantown Road.

This free event closes out the 2016 Great Read community literacy program, which celebrates everything “Made in Illinois.” The Grand Finale is open to the entire community.

Along with Frenzel’s program, the winners of the Great Read Art Contest will be announced.

Actors from Lockport’s Limestone Theater will also perform Illinoisbased readings, while books about Illinois trivia will be given away.

Refreshments will be served.

Frenzel is a Chicago suburban school teacher who used film clips to illustrate key points in his lessons. Seeing students’ excited reactions to the clips, he decided to turn his personal love for the cinema into a film appreciation class.

That class soon morphed into the popular interactive film presentations that he has been doing at schools, libraries, senior

centers and other Chicago-area organizations for more than 16 years.

The 2016 Great Read is presented by a consortium of Plainfield-area public and private organizations to promote literacy, reading, conversation and community in the greater Plainfield area.

Great Read’s partners include Plainfield School District 202, the Plainfield Public Library, Joliet Public Library, Fountaindale Public Library, Lemont Public Library, Shorewood-Troy Public Library, White Oak Library District, Joliet Junior College, Plainfield Township, the Jolietarea Barnes & Noble store and Voyager Media.

Kangaroo leather was the first material used by Allegory because, in addition to being an ecologically friendly product, it is also the thinnest and strongest leather in the world. For products such as wallets and pocket notebooks, this type of leather translates to items that are both durable and long lasting.

The Schumachers said their business’ social consciousness grew directly out of their experiences in the telecommunications industry and what they called an impersonal

corporate culture.

“In a lot of ways, starting this company was about getting out of that corporate-America cycle,” Chad said.

Jessica agreed, saying the ability to create custom pieces is the most rewarding part of her job.

“We don’t get to really dig in with all of our customers as much as I would like, so really getting to know someone, getting to know their story and being able to make a lifetime

LTHS board president earns 4th presidential volunteer service award John Lukasik received the honor for his volunteerism in the community For the fourth consecutive year, Lockport Township High School District 205 Board of Education President John Lukasik was named a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Lukasik received the honor for his volunteerism in the community.

The award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service each year.

To earn the national honor, Lukasik volunteered more than 100

hours of community service during 2015. “I believe volunteering is the right thing to do and I enjoy it very much,” Lukasik said. “I think there are great rewards for giving of your time to others and I am honored to take part in the many wonderful volunteering events in our community.”

The award was given by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, which was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

Joliet Central dedicates Peace Pole Practice began in Japan by World Peace Prayer Society Joliet Central High School last week officially dedicated a new, handcrafted limestone Peace Pole, which the school said signifies the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in various world languages.

This is Central’s second Peace Pole constructed to promote a message of harmony and goodwill, according to Joliet Township High School District 204.

“The original wooden Peace Pole was planted in 2001 in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration but was recently taken down when the Student Center Galleria was built,” said Joliet Central teacher Patti Edwards, who served as the driving force behind obtaining the new Peace Pole. “The old Peace Pole was refurbished by fellow teacher Vern Jordan and relocated, so it was the perfect opportunity to begin a campaign to further promote peace.”

Although Central’s Peace Pole was planted during the school’s centennial year, this is a longstanding practice that began in Japan by the World Peace Prayer Society – a nonprofit, nondenominational organization founded in 1955 by Masahisa Goi.

“With Allegory, we were trying to rediscover something that [America] has lost,” Chad said. “Their country is really now in that point of modernization, and there are several of those generational, artisanal businesses trying to preserve those traditions as they modernize.”

He said Allegory is working with ProEcuador – an entity within Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Trade that is in charge of assisting in the promotion of export and investments in the country – on several initiatives to create opportunities for those within the Ecuadorian maker community. Additionally, Allegory recently launched a new Kickstarter campaign intended to expand its selection of leather goods. Because Allegory owns its success to the crowdfunding community, Chad said they are going back to Kickstarter for this new product line.

More than 1,600 years ago, St. Augustine recognized how much we fear selfreflection when he noted, “People travel to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering.

Socrates kept things even simpler, encouraging his followers to “know thyself.”

Yet making the effort to explore what happens between our ears is a frightening endeavor. We worry that we won’t like what we find, and taking the time for self-exploration sounds about as fun as cleaning a dirty garage.

There’s also the issue of how to go about beginning the process. You might find yourself confused about how to get started, like the difficulty many find with trying to meditate for the first time. Consider using resources such as books and websites. For example, the website PsychCentral offers a list of prompts for daily self-reflection, while numerous authors have published self-help workbooks on the topic with prompts to jumpstart your quest. You might also consider taking a page from one of the most widespread and effective support groups ever known.

step by step In the 1930s, Alcoholics Anonymous was just getting started, and the group managed to do what no doctors or psychologists at the time could – find a solution to alcoholism. The program was built around 12 steps, the same steps that exist today. Although the program was designed for people with a drinking problem, many have noted that almost anyone can benefit from doing these steps.

The fourth step in the AA program addresses the notoriously intimidating project of self-examination. People working the steps sometimes move through steps one through three like a checklist, stating their agreement with the ideas and then moving on.

In theory, this works because the first three steps, while absolutely critical, do not require as much tangible evidence of their completion.

And, then comes step four: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Doing this step requires considerable thought, reflection, writing, remembering, and above all, discomfort. Yet, the growth that can be found on the other side is a genuine gift. take the good with the bad Unpacking old events and memories can produce many emotions, both negative and positive. The point of

looking inside is not to relive old hurts, but rather to see what’s really there so we can change the parts that continue to be roadblocks. Patterns of harmful behavior become evident, which then empowers us to make more effective choices.

It’s also important to include our strengths and positive attributes when we take an inventory. Here we can confirm the traits we like about ourselves and the accomplishments of our lives. A lot of people think they have to beat themselves up in order to do an effective inventory, and this simply isn’t the case. A thorough inventory includes the good, the bad and the ugly.

Count your blessings, literally Another powerful tool is making a gratitude list. This is a simple way of acknowledging the things in our life – great and small – for which we are thankful. Set a goal for how many things you want to name, and then start writing. Coming up with 20, 50 or even 100 items is easier than you imagine.

If you want to take this experience a step further, you can incorporate the gratitude list into a daily routine, such as journaling, prayer or meditation. In this way, self-reflection becomes a less intimidating task. As I believe is the case for anyone making a change, you have to do what works for you. There is not a single right way to engage in selfexamination, and the process is about progress, not perfection. And if you learn even one thing about yourself in that process, I’d say it’s worth it.

Coming off of four straight shutout losses, three by a 1-0 score, things looked bleak again for Joliet Catholic April 11 when it trailed Benet 3-0 at the half.

But great goaltending and a pair of goals made it a 3-2 game before the Angels’ rally ran out of time.

“It was a great comeback in the second half,” JCA coach Oscar Valdez said. “In the first half we were so flat. The girls did fight back and get two goals.”

The comeback started when the Angels’ goaltender Grace Whalen made some big stops to keep them in the game.

“Our boost game from our goalkeeper, who made a great save there with 10 or 15 minutes left,” Valdez said. She got her fingers on the ball and then dove and saved another. It helps a lot.

We have to get back at it and improve.”

“I’m going to give all the credit to Joliet Catholic,” Benet coach Bob Gros said. “I remember two years ago they were all freshmen and sophomores and they were very athletic, but they weren’t very organized and lacked confidence as young kids tend to be. In the second half they came out and really went hard.

They went direct, were physical and knocked us on our butts and scored a couple really nice goals.”

Moving forward, the Angels hope to continue playing the way they played in the second half of the game.

“We want to play the way we played in the second half,” Valdez said. “We have to carry that over to every game.”

The loss dropped JCA to 1-5 on the season, but with an experienced roster, Valdez is confident the team will rebound and have a strong finish to the season.

Tigers battling through up and down season

With a young team and a host of games cancelled because of weather, including three in a row, the Joliet West softball team is finding its way on the go.

With a 6-3 record to open play, including a 23-0 win over Thornridge, things on paper look good for the Tigers, but coach Heather Suca is more concerned about how West plays against the top competition.

“We have had our ups and downs early,” she said. “We are moving people around early defensively and trying to find the right spots.

We have to find ways to adjust to good pitching.”

With three seniors, six juniors and three sophomores on the team, Suca said the goal for the Tigers is to be their best at the end of the season.

“The plan is to get better every time out,” Suca said. “We have a young team and we have to learn from our mistakes, get better from our mistakes, fix them and move forward. By the time we hit the end of the season, we are where we need to be. We have some progress to make, it is just a matter of a little more focus and a little more intensity.”

One of those players is one of the three seniors on the roster.

“I am looking for (Ariana Liceaga), one of our seniors to step up and take the team and lead them when maybe Kiley (Robb) isn’t having her best game or Kristen (Ames) isn’t having her best game,” Suca said. “We want Ariana to be there

to pick them up offensively and defensively.”

While Robb can be a dominant pitcher for the Tigers, Suca believes one of the Joliet West sophomores can step up and contribute.

“I am looking for Sidney (Budzinski), our No. 2 pitcher to step up. She has the talent and the ability and I am looking for her to break through,” Suca said.

Steelmen softball gaining confidence as season rolls on

After an exciting start to the season, the Joliet Central softball game leveled off before grabbing an exciting, extra inning win at Bolingbrook on April 15.

The win not only gave the Steelmen a win in the SouthWest Suburban Conference, it gave the team confidence after surviving a Raider comeback to take the game in extras.

“That says a lot about the girls’ perseverance,” Central coach Erin Douglas said. “Every practice we do a lot with base running and pressure situations and we put a lot of pressure on ourselves in practice and it is really translating to the field. So they are able to mentally stay tough. They go up with a plan every at bat and don’t get off track.”

Douglas said it was a loss early in the campaign that woke the Steelmen up and got them playing the right way.

“We really started off strong, played a lot of games,” she said.

“We had a game at the beginning of the season where we lost and made a lot of errors and that was a wake-up call. It showed us how much we had to tighten up, how much more serious we had to take practice and the girls were up to the challenge.”

Part of easing that pressure comes from the senior leaders on the roster.

“We have five seniors on the team this year and they are such great leaders. They have done a really good job of including the younger players,” Doulas said.

“The seniors have really taken them under their wing and everyone just feels like they are part of one team and it’s not about

What Douglas has seen from the team is a fight that began last season. “(Before the Bolingbrook game) We lost to Sandburg, but we were in the game and I think that showed the kids that if you have

that confidence, no matter if we are up or down, if we play through all seven innings, good things can happen,” she said. “Even last year, ending the season with a loss to Plainfield Central, we played a really good game and I think we have showed people that we are here to compete and here to surprise a few people this year and that is what the girls want to do.

“When we talk about goals, wins and losses never come up. It has nothing to do with that. It is about us staying present for seven innings every game and putting 100 percent out. It is about being mentally prepared every game. We want to be excited on the bus on the way to the game, cheering each other on the field, so when things do happen, we can mentally stay as one. At the end of the season, it doesn’t matter what it says on the jersey, it is high school softball and any one can win on any day. If we believe it, it could happen.”

In the title game, Lockport was led by sophomores Kyle Dixon (8 kills).

In the semifinal, the Porters beat Leyden 25-12, 25-20.

Talk about boundaries with pushy pops dave says

Dear Dave, My husband and I are just starting to get control of our finances, but we have a problem.

My dad has a habit of expecting us to buy things for him. I know he has money, but anytime he knows we’re going to the store, he gives us a list of things he wants.

If he’s with us, he just throws things in the cart and expects us to pay. He acts like we have an obligation to do all this for him. I love my dad, but this has become annoying. What can we do?

Christina Dear Christina, I know you love your dad, but he sounds like the kind of guy who doesn’t really respect boundaries. And these kinds of folks, as a rule, don’t like it when they’re suddenly confronted with them. Regardless, you need to have a firm but loving talk with your dad. Let him know how much he means to both of you, but remind him that you and your husband are working hard to get into better financial shape. This means you can’t spend more than is absolutely necessary. If he’s hungry, have him over for dinner. If he just needs one or two small things, that’s not such a big deal. But you’re not obligated to pay his way just because he’s your dad.

Like I said, he may or may not like this conversation. He may fuss and throw a little fit, but at that point it becomes his problem, not yours. Chances are he’ll come around in a week or so, and after he gets over the embarrassment of it all, everything will be all right again.

You aren’t an unloving or

ungrateful daughter for not letting him run all over you. Talk to him in a kind, respectful way.

If you feel you can’t stand up to him alone, ask your husband to lend support or put a voice to your wishes.

Dear Dave, I’m debt-free except for my house. I make about $120,000 a year, and I have a truck that’s worth around $33,000 and a car that’s worth $28,000. I don’t have an emergency fund, so I was wondering if I should sell the truck to establish my emergency savings.

Eric Dear Eric, A good rule of thumb is to never have more than half of your annual income tied up in things that go down in value. You’re not quite there, but you’re close.

And I love your idea of wanting to immediately establish an emergency fund. You never know what life is going to unexpectedly throw at you, and an emergency fund is great insurance against that sort of thing. Here’s how I look at it. Nothing you’ve told me indicates that this truck represents anything being out of control. It’s an expensive truck, but it’s not like you make $30,000 a year and have a $33,000 truck.

But if you don’t need or want the truck — and you’re that passionate about having a big, instant emergency fund in place — then sell it!
