Forest Preserve, Shorewood HUGS invite residents to canine-friendly event

With the eighth annual “Hugs for Hounds Easter Egg Hunt” less than a month away, pet owners who like to have fun with their Fidos are in luck.

The annual spring outing for dogs and their owners is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. March 26 at the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Hammel Woods Dog Park in Shorewood. A lively Easter eve extravaganza, the event features treat-filled eggs, dogs dressed in costumes and pet owners.

Dog owners are encouraged to bring baskets to collect the Easter eggs, which are filled with special prizes or dog treats. Hugs for Hounds will last until all of the eggs are retrieved by the canine participants.

Shorewood HUGS, a local nonprofit women’s organization, is again partnering with the Will County Forest Preserve on the

event. A $5 entry fee per dog will be donated toward the care, handling and training of the Forest Preserve’s K-9 officer, Jullo.

Hugs for Hounds will also include drawings for a variety of Easter baskets. Prizes will be awarded for biggest dog, smallest dog, best Easter outfit, dog that traveled the farthest and dog that looks most like its owner.

Organizers said preregistration is recommended. To pre-register, download the registration form from the forest preserve’s website, www.ReconnectWithNature.org, and mail it in with your $5 fee.

Day-of registration will be available beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Each dog must be on a leash and accompanied by an owner at all

times. Dogs participating in Hugs for Hounds must be current on all vaccinations. A dog park permit is not required to attend this event, but 2016 permits will be sold on site that day. All information required for a permit, including a driver’s license as well as the dog’s rabies tag number and expiration date, must be presented to purchase a permit.

Those wishing to purchase a permit are encouraged to download a dog park permit application at the forest preserve’s website and bring it to the event completely filled out.

Troy Poms place 2nd in state competition The Troy Poms team finished second in the Illinois Drill Team Association’s state pom competition and fifth in the junior high division of the state pom/dance competition held Feb. 13 in Springfield.

The Troy Community School District 30-C team had advanced to the IDTA’s state competition after placing second in pom and fourth in pom/dance at a regional competition in Villa Grove. They also placed first in pom/dance and second in pom at the regional

competition in Dunlap earlier in the season.

Team member Hannah Cemeno was recognized individually for her performance at the Dunlap competition, and Nina Romac at the Villa Grove competition, both earning “Rising Star” awards that are based on technique, performance and ability. According to Coach Jennifer Cryder, the team worked very hard for the state awards, practicing five days a week at sessions that sometimes lasted longer than three hours each.

“The competitive dance team at Troy Middle School is an amazing group of young women on and off the dance floor,” Cryder said. “They are always looking for ways to improve themselves in their art, and I could not be more impressed. I was so thrilled with their placement because they are always working together and getting feedback from each other. This team has truly set the bar high.”

“The Troy poms team was extremely hard working this year and put in many hours above and beyond to obtain the level of excellence they achieved,” said Meagan DeGroot, Troy’s director of athletics and activities. “A big thanks to coach Cryder for the countless number of hours she spent choreographing dances and putting the costumes together.”

Cryder thanked volunteers Alyse Plattos, Christina Narciso and Debra LeDuc for assisting at the competitions and parent Karen Plunge for donating 19 sets of new poms for the state competition.

Joliet councilwoman says stop sign needed at Theodore, Great Ridge Quillman: ‘It’s a matter of public safety’

With reported 17 accidents at Theodore Street and Great Ridge Avenue between January 2013 and February 2016, councilwoman Jan Hallums-Quillman told the Joliet City Council March 1 that a stop sign is needed at the intersection to reduce trafficrelated incidents.

The public service committee did not recommend the item at its Feb. 29 meeting, with members saying they did not feel the situation meet the criteria for a new stop sign.

Quillman said she found the committee’s response to the matter puzzling and conducted additional research on the matter.

According to state and federal statutes, a crash problem is indicated by five or more cases in a 12-month period at a multiway stop installation.

After reviewing the laws, Quillman argued that the number of traffic accidents at the intersection certainly make a good case for further city council action.

Quillman said she initially started

to back the idea that a multi-way stop sign should be installed on a 1- to 2-year trial basis and the speed limit be reduced after seeing an email with a suggestion made by a concerned resident.

“It’s a matter of public safety and not only that, but it’s our job to protect our citizens when they come to us for help,” Quillman said. “This is their neighborhood; they live there.”

Quillman, an at-large councilwoman who serves on the public safety committee, said the last traffic study for the area was done in 2013 and urged the city council to act before it’s too late.

“Why do we have to keep doing traffic studies until somebody gets killed,” she asked.

Because Joliet is a homerule city, the stop sign proposal can be imposed at any time should the council agree that change is warranted and the city manager makes the necessary arrangements for the placement of a stop sign.

Councilman Jim McFarland said any additional action on the issue would be taken by the public service committee, adding that there was a discrepancy in the traffic study presented to them.

“Unfortunately, the staff did not obtain all the documents that basically specified that certain areas within the geographic region that we’re discussing took place,” he said. “Staff did go back and obtain all the police reports and did an analysis. They came back to committee yesterday. Again, they [said] there is no support for the four-way stop.”

McFarland said the committee does not see the stop sign as a necessity, adding that the city will address the issue by increasing police presence and speed limit signage.

Councilman Larry Hug said he would like to see engineers compile other studies on similar intersections with smaller residential streets, such as Essington and Larkin, to help the city make a comparison and address Quillman’s concern. He said the issue requires greater caution in the event the city finds and disagrees with the guidelines set by state and local governments, which he said do not warrant the stop sign’s necessity.

The project requires a right-ofway that is 20 feet on the east side of St. Louis Street. Expansion calls for the relocation of a Pace-owned parking lot, located next to their

maintenance facility, and employee parking lot to accommodate the road. Pace is offering the property at no cost to the city, according to the agreement.

Officials in Joliet are budgeting local funds, valued at $127,000, for improvements to the roadway and future grant funds, valued at $127,000, for the parking lot.

The vote grants a low bid on the project to Walsh Construction.

After examining railroad requirements, site constraints and schedule-driven price increases, the engineer’s estimate rose from $15.63 million to $16.03 million, which is a 15.5 percent increase.

Delaying the contractor’s award means other engineering bids are no longer on the table, officials

said. The project will funded by state and city contributions from the grants and special revenue fund, as well as multi-modal transport center funds.

Once the budget impasse ends, the city said it will be refunded $362,420. The remainder of the money for the construction of the parking lot will be reimbursed from BNSF funds.

Will County students fight to save MAP

The state’s most at-risk students could be in danger of losing the funds needed to stay in college, thanks to partisan politics and the continued state budget stalemate.

Thousands of Illinois students rely on the Monetary Award Program, or MAP, which provides grants that do not need to be repaid to Illinois residents who attend approved Illinois colleges and demonstrate financial need.

“Two-four-six-eight, we just

want to graduate,” was the a battle cry shouted by Lewis University students who attend a rally last month in front of the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.

Universities and colleges from throughout the state attended the rally, with Lewis being the largest contingent. Nearly 1,400 Lewis University students would have been awarded MAP grants for the 2015-16 academic year.

With student, faculty and staff support, the university also started a “stuff the box” initiative, writing letters in support of the

Bruce Rauner vetoed the bill last week, and the House opted not to override the decision. The measure would have immediately released $168 million to college students in Illinois.

“Gov. Rauner is wrong to make 125,000 low-income college students the latest victims of his avoidance behavior,” state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said. “He needs to think about others, stop dodging the obvious and concentrate on negotiating a budget.”

McGuire is chairman of the Senate’s higher education committee and sponsored the bill.

He has been active in his support of MAP funding.

Rauner opposed the bill, saying it would only add to the state’s deficit and not solve the problem.

“SB 2043 can only become law if Rep. [Jack] Franks or Rep. [Scott] Drury succumb to pressure from Speaker Madigan and flip their votes to force a massive tax hike on the people of Illinois,” said Catherine Kelly, press secretary for the governor. “These members sided with taxpayers the first time around because this is a sham bill and an empty promise to students.

We believe these members will do the right thing to ensure taxpayers are not left holding the bag.

“All of us want to fund higher education and MAP, and we stand ready to work with the General Assembly to find ways to do so without adding to the deficit or forcing a massive tax increase.”

The House chose to not override the veto. McGuire said the override looked to authorize the governor to make releasing MAP grants a priority.

“The governor rejected this opportunity,” he added. “My work to secure funding for Illinois’ needy students, community colleges and nine public universities will continue.”

Money not spent

In September, many state universities and community colleges began absorbing costs upfront to allow the school year to start on time.

According to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, MAP uses a formula to distribute the appropriated funds so that the neediest students receive grant assistance. ISAC is operating on the assumption that the appropriation level would be the same as 2014-15. However, the state budget that funds MAP has not yet been finalized by the

Illinois General Assembly and governor. As a result, it is not known how much funding this program will receive.

Last year alone, the state funded $364.8 million in MAP grants. The average student with a MAP grant receives approximately $2,700 to help pay for tuition.

At Joliet Junior College, nearly 1,000 students may lose the necessary assistance to pursue dreams of higher education.

At JJC, MAP has the largest demographic impact on student financial support and access to education. Based on financial aid records, the school has 945 students with $536,376, in MAP funds applied to their fall accounts. Because of the budget impasse, JJC applied MAP funds to students’ accounts as pending financial aid, while the college awaits MAP payments from the state.

The college is making its decision to fund MAP on a semester-by-semester basis, and has opted to front more than $1 million in MAP funds for the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.

The college applied $553,000 to student MAP accounts for the fall semester and applied $470,000 to date for the spring 2016 semester.

“It’s imperative that our students have all the tools and support

they need toward completion of their academic goals,” said Kelly Rhoder, JJC communications director. “Financial aid is a significant piece of that. Without it, the larger, long-term impact is on our local workforce. We train and educate skilled workers to fill in-demand jobs, we ensure the seamless transfer of students seeking bachelor’s degrees, and so much more.

“People come to JJC to improve their lives, and to have access new opportunities and new experiences. We will continue to do what we can to preserve that.”

In addition, the state’s funding continues to shrink in all areas.

JJC previously reported that since fiscal year 2000, the state’s share of the college’s operating budget has decreased from 18.7 percent to a projected 10 percent in fiscal year 2016.

“Illinois needs to invest in the

higher education of its residents in order to get back to full strength,” McGuire said. “Failing to provide the financial aid for which 130,000 students qualified threatens those students, the schools they attend and the future of our state.”

College of DuPage is reportedly managing the loss at this point but does worry how long it will be able to sustain student’s missing MAP awards. The college’s student newspaper, The Courier, reports that Acting Interim President Joseph Collins believes the college may need to pull extra funding, financial aid will come directly from the college if MAP grants are unavailable.

“The foundation has agreed to help out in terms of any kind of emergencies that come up,” said Collins.

McGuire said he will continue to fight for MAP funding and higher education.

Man faces up to 30 years for attempted murder

Bradley Schlott convicted on 2009 charge he attacked girlfriend with a knife A Joliet man was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder for a 2009 knife attack against his former girlfriend, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Jurors found Bradley Schlott, 48, guilty of attempted firstdegree murder at the conclusion of a five-day trial March 2. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 3 and faces between six and 30 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Schlott attacked his former girlfriend on the morning of March 12, 2009, while she was getting ready for work in the Joliet house they shared. Schlott, who believed the victim was having an affair, repeatedly punched her in the face, grabbed her by the hair, and threw her to the ground.

The state’s attorney’s office said he then used a knife to cut away chunks of her hair before slicing her neck and the side of her left breast.

The victim, who was bleeding and bruised, began to beg for her life, eventually convincing her attacker to call 911 by telling him she would say her injuries were the result of an accident.

A physician testified for the prosecution during the trial that the victim would have died

had she not been treated for her injuries.

“Bradley Schlott is a weak and jealous man who savagely attacked his former girlfriend because he could no longer control her,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a statement. “By fighting back, this courageous victim not only saved her own life but helped police and prosecutors put this monster behind bars.”

Assistant state’s attorneys Tricia McKenna and Marie Griffin presented evidence at trial, including letters written by Schlott, to prove he had every intention of killing his girlfriend.

One letter to the victim’s father, mother and brother apologized for her murder, and alleged that she was cheating and had robbed him of his money, family, career, dignity and sanity. A second letter to the victim’s boss accused him and her co-workers of covering up the alleged affair and stated, “I’m not sorry for what I did at all.”

These letters shattered the defense attorney’s theory that Schlott attacked his girlfriend after he had become involuntarily intoxicated on prescription medication he was using to treat his depression.

City approves police department staffing study Cost of the study valued at $33,500 Joliet officials reached an agreement March 1 on a professional services agreement that will fund a police department staffing study.

Budget constraints, retirements and other economic consequences have put the Joliet Police Department, as well as

other departments, in a bind, according to the city.

Approving the agreement, means Alexander Weiss Consulting will oversee the project.

The city hopes that adjustments to operational programs can be made more efficiently and effectively maintain service levels as appropriate. The cost of the study is valued at $33,500, using monies that will be amended and allotted toward the Joliet Police Department’s 2016 budget.

On Jan. 27, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner delivered his state of the state address to a joint session of the Illinois state legislature. The governor offered his perspective on difficult state-level issues like labor and property tax reforms, education funding, and of course, the current Illinois state budget stalemate.

At the time of this writing, the budget stalemate appears headed for its ninth month, and represents, among other things, a remarkable unwillingness of both sides to resume constructive and meaningful dialogue.

The economic and social progress that’s been made in the Joliet area and other communities across the state, by way of dialogue and cooperation, is under direct threat of being wiped away by state-level officials’ refusal to do the same. It’s deeply perplexing that those who govern our state would choose a path that so severely endangers education, transportation infrastructure, healthcare, partnership with private enterprise, and all of the other issues that both sides of the aisle recognize as critical to statewide, long-term prosperity. It is unlikely that we will best secure our state’s future through our elected officials’ unwillingness to discuss it.

Stepping Stones in Joliet is suspending substance use disorder treatment for persons whose services are paid for by

the Department of Human Services.

This organization provides addiction treatmentandrecoveryprogramsthrough intense residential and outpatient services. Unfortunately, they have not been paid for services provided after July 1, 2015, and reimbursed through general revenue funds administered by DHS or the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The expected loss is $323,000.

The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living recently announced the need to reduce staff and institute furlough days in order to save money.

Their savings are nearly depleted as they sit and wait for $86,000 from the state.

In fact, all 22 Centers for Independent Living across Illinois have been forced to take similar measures.

Cornerstone Services did not receive a $699,000 grant to provide supportive servicesforformerlyhomelessindividuals and families. In addition, Cornerstone did receive contracts totaling $965,795 to provide mental health services, but they have not received any payment since July 1 for those contracts. Cornerstone has managed through the budget impasse through attrition, delaying maintenance repairs and projects, and utilizing its line of credit.

Senior Services of Will County recently limited office hours, cut salaries by 30 percent and had to lay off 40 percent of its staff, again due to the budget impasse in the state. Senior Services is waiting on more than $300,000 in state payments

since July 1, 2015. Since these measures have been implemented, more than 2,000 seniors have seen regular visits vanish from caseworkers.

We haven’t even touched upon the 136,000 plus college students who sit and wait for their MAP grant funds to help offset or cover their education costs.

The business community has had enough of this downward trend. We call on our leadership to roll up their sleeves and ensure that we don’t lose our once proud status as a business friendly state that encouraged an entrepreneurial spirit. Many have lost (services, jobs, education, etc.), numerous others are on the verge, and nobody can predict the devastation that will truly occur if this stalemate continues.

Will this administration and legislature be remembered as those that overcame historic differences, or those that succumbed to them? Rebuilding Illinois with compromise, common sense

The state of Illinois is the fifth largest state in the country and regularly makes national headlines. Illinois has claim to four presidents, a rich cultural history and the birthplace of many things we love today.

There is also a dark history of political corruption, Al Capone, present day gun violence, and the current state budget battle led by Gov. Bruce Rauner. Illinois is a great state but there are many challenges that need to be addressed.

As of December 2015, the unemployment rate was a full percentage point above the U.S. average of 4.9 percent for January 2016. Among neighboring states, Iowa’s unemployment is 3.4 percent, Wisconsin (4.3 percent), Indiana (4.4 percent), Kentucky (5.3 percent) and Missouri (4.4 percent).

Why is Illinois the highest? According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, Illinois lost 3,000 jobs in 2015.

Last month there was an announcement

of over a combined 1,100 jobs to be cut. Those eliminating positions are Mondelez, Wal-Mart, CoStar, IFCO Systems and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.

Lutheran Social Services, a large faithbased nonprofit, is owed $6 million by the state of Illinois and with the ongoing budget battle could no longer fund its current day-to-day operations.

Caterpillar has eliminated 2,300 jobs since September of last year. Chicago Public Schools and the Illinois’ Pension System are in dire need of restructuring.

The first step to rebuilding Illinois is for a budget to be passed. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, has been demanding the state implement his turnaround agenda in order for him to agree to a budget.

The governor’s turnaround agenda includes making Illinois a right to work state; weakening unions; eliminating the prevailing wage law, which pays construction workers a fair wage; freezing property taxes; cutting workers’ compensation benefits; term limits; and cutting spending.

Rauner’s efforts leading the state have

earned him a 33.1 percent approval rating and 51.6 percent disapproval, according to a Jan. 9 poll by the Illinois Observer. It is coming close to a year that the state has been running without a budget and many local governments and universities are struggling. Chicago State University may close. The governor’s demands are hurting this state and he is unwilling to compromise for the better of the people he was elected to serve.

Illinois is governed by strong Democrat majorities in the state legislature, and with Rauner in charge of the governorship it’s important to take a detailed look at both parties’ economic message. Minnesota, a blue state, and Texas, a red state, are worth looking into. Both have thriving economies and Illinois can be one of them too.

It’s time a team of independent economists look at our state and distinguish how to best manage our state’s finances without heartless cuts and how to best continue commit to innovation and opportunity for its residents.

After a great finish in the Pontiac Tournament, there were high expectations in the rematch between No. 3 seed Joliet West and No. 6 Plainfield North Friday in the Neuqua Valley Regional final.

It lived up to its billing.

Thanks to the help of a threequarter court buzzer beater, Joliet West topped North 64-59.

“We’ve been in every scenario this season and we’ve learned a lot,” West coach Nick DiForti said.

“We’ve been up big and down big.

We’ve played tough man teams and teams that played zone against us.

All that experience and tough non conference schedule paid off.”

“The record doesn’t matter anymore,” West junior Trevion Bell said. “We just had to come out and prove that we were the better team in the situation. We stuck with our game plan and won We kept our composure down the stretch after they made their run.”

Holding a 45-43 late in the third quarter, Plainfield North missed a

shot and Teyvion Kirk grabbed the rebound, took a couple dribbles and heaved a shot from the opposite foul line, which banked in, giving West a 48-43 lead after three.

“I practice half court shots all the time,” Kirk said. “I just looked at the scoreboard, aimed for the basket and shot my normal shot. It feels good. We haven’t done this in a long time and we wanted to bring this back to the school.”

That momentum carried over to the start of the fourth quarter as West scored the first six points to grab a 54-43 lead early in the fourth quarter.

“I know that helped us,” DiForti said. “That got us going. Down the stretch we just wanted to spread the floor on them.”

But the Tigers from Plainfield wouldn’t give up.

They scored the next six points and after a tip in by Bradlee Mills, they were back to within two at 5654 with three minutes left.

North had a chance to take the lead, but a Kevin Krieger threepointer went halfway down and

Defense carries Joliet Central to regional title

The Joliet Central defense carried it through the LincolnWay Central Regional last week, culminating in its first regional title since the program split with West at the beginning of the decade.

The Steelmen, the No. 3 seed in the Lockport Sectional, completed its quest for the title by taking down the host school, No. 2 Lincoln-Way Central 39-31 Friday.

Central led by as many as 18 points at 26-8 before the Knights came back to make it a close game at the end.

Jose Grubbs led the way with 13 points in the win, which sets up a crosstown battle with Joliet West Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lockport.

In a physical defensive battle, Joliet Central topped No. 10 Plainfield East 46-43 Wednesday in the regional semifinal.

While he missed the free throw, teammate Malik Fuller grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled.

From there the Steelmen defense finished off the game, while they were able to convert 3-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds.

“This was a huge win,” Gubbs said. “Nobody wants to play (Plainfield East right now.”

The game was tight throughout as it was tied 9-9 after one and Joliet Central held a 20-19 lead at the half.

The Steelmen had the biggest lead of the game at 30-24 in the third quarter, but it was back to 33-31 after three.

Fuller finished the game with 13 points, while Grubbs added 11 for Joliet Central, who had seven key offensive rebounds in the game.

“We did what we had to do and got a body on him and the other guys got the rebounds and putbacks.”

The Steelmen were also able to overcome the difficult full court press by the Bengals.

“The last week with Bolingbrook and West, while we didn’t perform the way we wanted to, I think it set the table with the kind of team Plainfield East is and running guys at you,” Corcoran said. “We weren’t successful last week, but we were able to tighten some things up and that helped tonight.”

Minooka wins first boys basketball regional since 1977

Entering the Class 4A playoffs, there may not have been a team hotter than Bolingbrook.

The Raiders had won eight of nine games entering the postseason and nine of 10 heading into the finals of the Minooka Regional against the No. 1 seed and regional host Indians.

Minooka found a way to cool off Bolingbrook, defeating the Raiders 49-31 to end its hopes at a repeat trip to the state final four.

The win gave Minooka its second ever regional title and first since 1977.

“We work hard, we are tough and we have a lot of heart,” said Minooka coach Scott Tanaka.

That date has been reminded to the players all season.

“Coach has been talking to me about 1977 for four straight years and it feels better than I thought it would,” said senior Joe Butler.

The Indians did it the way they

have all season, with defense, a slow-tempo offense and a group of players that are not basketball-first guys.

“They have bought in to being part of a basketball program,” Tanaka said. “At any point, any of them could have gone and focused on their other sport, but they have continued to do this and work hard for us over the summer. This team has a lot of heart.”

The fact that basketball is not the number one sport for a lot of players is exactly what kept them playing.

“Most of us aren’t basketball first players, we have one guy and that’s Larry (Roberts),” said Butler, who is headed to Illinois State University to play baseball. “We just love the game. Most of us have been playing together since fourth or fifth grade and we just love it. We can’t stop playing and it will be a sad day when this is over. It is in the back if my mind that my basketball career is almost over. I will miss playing this game with my brother and my best friends. The one thing I won’t miss are the injuries.”

Being multiple sports also is part of what helps Minooka succeed.

“Playing different sports and playing all year round helps you learn how to compete and learn how to win,” said Jon Butler. “Basketball will help us for that in baseball.”

Baseball has been put on hold for the Butler brothers as they lead the Indians through the basketball playoffs.

Joe led the team in scoring with 16 points, 12 in the first half, while Roberts added 11.

The Indians set the tone early getting out to a 10-0 run in the first four minutes of the game, a lead Bolingbrook could never recover from.

“That was big, it really set the tone.

We just did what we do every day and when you do that, good things happen. We believe in it and we buy into it 100 percent,” Tanaka said.

In the regional opener, Minooka defeated Southwest Prairie foe Romeoville 51-46. Joe Butler led the Indians with 26 points, while Roberts added 11. The Spartans handed Minooka one of its two SPC losses during the season.

Joliet West almost didn’t even make it to the final, as it needed a pair of big plays from Ward to beat Neuqua 50-48.

Ward gave the Tigers the lead for good with two minutes left in the game on a basket and foul to take a 47-46 lead. “My teammate drove and the defender stepped over and he threw a nice pass and I made the basket,” Ward said. “I think we were rushing offensively and we need to slow it down.”

Then Ward blocked a shot by Neuqua’s Jacob Cushing with 1.6 seconds left with a 50-48 lead to preserve the win.

“I knew he was a lefty, so I stayed on his left hand and waited for him to make his move,” Ward said.

“The defense was very big down the stretch. That was probably my biggest play of the season.”

“He is a good defender against a good offensive player,” DiForti said.

“What else would you want in a high school game? We knew they were going to (Cushing), so we wanted our best defender on him.”

Simple steps to minimize mealtime mayhem

By Sue Becker | Bugle Staff Although I don’t love to cook, I do love to eat, so I’ve done all I can to make meal planning as painless as possible. Whether you’re the cook or lucky enough to be the beneficiary of someone else’s cooking, enjoy these lessons I’ve learned to make mealtimes less stressful.

Plan meals for the week Rather than frantically staring at the open refrigerator and freezer each evening trying to figure out what to make for dinner. I plan dinners for the upcoming week every Sunday. I write them on an erasable whiteboard attached with magnetic clips to my refrigerator.

It’s amazing how much less stressful my day is just knowing I can answer the question “What’s for dinner?”’’

Create a rotating menu routine I have 21 index cards, each contains one dinner suggestion, as well as any special ingredients that I’m not likely to have on hand.

Rather than having to put a lot of thought into what to make for dinner, I just grab the seven index cards in the front of the stack and use them as my starting point.

meal based on my husband’s and my schedules. I reorder the seven index cards to correspond to each evening, and write those meals in order on my whiteboard. I write the special ingredients from the index cards onto my grocery list and check to make sure all of the nonspecial ingredients are on hand. I put that group of index cards in the back of the stack, and I’m ready for next week’s meal planning.

Create a themed menu routine Another option is to have a theme for each day of the week. Themes help narrow your options, which for me is the biggest challenge.

For example, Monday is breakfast for dinner; Tuesday is Mexican; Wednesday is pasta – you get the idea. You could also include a night where family members take turns planning (and maybe even cooking!) dinner.

Shop once a week When your meals are planned ahead of time and your grocery list is planned accordingly, you may only have to hit the grocery store once a week.

Double up If your freezer space allows it, make double batches of everything so you can cook once and reap the benefits twice. I keep a list of those frozen meals on my meal planning whiteboard so I don’t forget them.

If I know I’ll have a busy week, I incorporate a frozen meal into my meal planning.

Prepare ahead I review my meal planning whiteboard each evening so I know what’s planned for dinner the next day. I prepare as much as possible by chopping vegetables, measuring out spices, thawing meat and doing whatever else I can to make the next day’s meal preparation quick and easy.
