Upcoming construction projects slated Projects for Wynstone Park, Black Road public bikeway approved

The Shorewood Village Board of Trustees approved construction plans for two projects, one being Wynstone Park and another for a public bikeway along Black Road at their March 3 special meeting.

Officials unanimously approved both efforts, the first being a contract award to Wilkinson Excavating for Wynstone Park.

“It’s actually going to be a great facility for an underserved area,” said Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman.

The park, located near Wynstone and Mounds Roads, will feature a number of amenities including a new playground, a practice field and a pavilion. That project is slated to reach completion by the fall.

Wilkinson Excavating.

Wynstone Park improvements will be paid for using monies budgeted in the village’s park fund and additional funding issued by the state’s Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant to account for $839,000 in total estimated project costs.

Public Works Director Chris Drey said funding for this initiative was held up by the state only to create a delay. The village took time to look into cost-saving measures and they’re looking to take advantage of that, he said.

“We have approximately $130,000 worth of equipment and pieces that we will buy and will [be included in] a packet and will be brought in front of [the village board] accordingly,” he said.

“That’ll save us money from the contractor purchasing it.”

The contractor will be responsible for storing and installing the equipment, which is to be purchased at a later date.

The board also authorized a pact with the Forest Preserve District of Will County to construct a public bikeway that connects the City of Joliet and the Village of Shorewood along Black Road.

“My understanding is that they will also be putting some sort of connection over I-55,” said Village Attorney Jim Murphy.

Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman said he’s excited to see this initiative coming together.

“This has been in the works for decades, not just years,” he said.

“This has been in the works for a while. [It’s] well over due. That’s that one connection… the one that kind of completes this entire

network.”

Also at that meeting, Shorewood board action approves a proposal for new key access control software providing entry in and out of Village Hall.

“This was an all-around effort between Chris Drey’s department and I,” said Deputy Police Chief Jason Barten. “[Village Administrator] Mr. [Roger] Barrowman came to me, and we had talked about doing this last year in the budget; it didn’t happen.”

Drey agreed.

“We were able to determine that the funds were available,” he said, noting that village staff saw some increased revenues and monies leftover from unfunded programs.

Barten said this initiative is viewed as a huge upgrade for Shorewood.

“The technology that currently exists in the Village Hall is dated,” Barten said. “It was installed the time the Village Hall was made.

There’s no room for any type of upgrade or expansions. Esscoe, who was the bid at that time, put the equipment in. We [went] back

to them and gave them the opportunity to improve everything that was here.”

Trustee Anthony Luciano questioned how advanced is the new key access control software.

“I know the newest ones have the ability to issue you a code for one hour or issue a code between 11 or 12 o’clock at night,” he said.

“Is this that sophisticated?”

Drey tried to explain.

“The discussions we’ve had— and that’s why we thought this was a great opportunity between both the buildings and any future buildings—is to get into newer software,” he said. “Like Deputy Chief Barten said, when this building was done 10 years ago or so, the equipment was even older.

The software was even older than all of that. We hadn’t done any upgrades to that. “ Drey added that though the current key access system has been very reliable and they’ve had little problems with it, the newer software allows the village to restrict and allow access to the building at times when it’s needed.

The Troy Dance Team, of Troy Community School District 30-C, finished 1st place in Springfield in the February 11 IDTA State Competition in the pom category and 3rd place in the pom/dance category, Junior High Division.

The team had advanced to the Illinois Drill Team Association State Competition after earning a qualifying score and placing 1st in both categories at two important competitions – the December regional competition held at Gardner/South Wilmington High School and the January regional competition held at Charleston High School.

Will County men accept challenge of annual culinary competition The pressure is on for 50 local amateur chefs who are planning menus and plotting strategies for the Ninth Annual “Men Who Cook” culinary competition to benefit the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

New cooks and returning favorite chefs will whet the crowd’s appetites with bite-sized morsels of their favorite dishes. Come hungry and be prepared to sample the widest variety of entrees, appetizers, side dishes, and desserts in the most anticipated cooking contest in Will County.

“Men Who Cook” is from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Pipefitters Training Center off I-80 at 10850 187th Street in Mokena.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who established the Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995, invites the public to taste the home-cooked dishes offered by our local amateur chefs. After sampling the fine cuisine, guests will be asked to vote for their favorite

dishes in each of four categories: appetizers; side dishes; entrées; and desserts.

Returning Chef Bob Fox of Omega Plumbing is fine-tuning his recipe for this year’s contest in the hopes of winning his category.

Last year, Fox served guests Cuban Arroz Con Pollo, or Cuban Chicken and Rice. This year, he said he’s upping his game by preparing Beef Medallions in a Beer Reduction Demi-Glace.

“It’s a phenomenal experience,” Fox said. “Obviously it’s for a very good cause, but it’s also a great time. It’s fast-paced on both the cooking and serving sides. And it’s a lot of fun to see so many happy faces.”

Frankfort Police Chief John Burica and his “Men Who Cook” team of Frankfort detectives and officers welcome all challenges. They are bringing back to the table their award-winning Smoked Beef Brisket, which has taken first place in the entrée category twice in past years.

“It’s the detectives’ recipe, and they do a great job with it,” Chief Burica said. “Cooking starts the day before the event. It takes eight to 10 hours of smoking the beef overnight. They put a lot of work into getting ready.”

While the chief and his team enjoy the competition, they know the money raised helps the Children’s Advocacy Center protect and heal sexually abused children and hold their abusers accountable. Frankfort police have worked with the Children’s Advocacy Center on more than 30 investigations of child sexual abuse since 2009.

Last year’s “Men Who Cook” drew 750 attendees and raised more than $76,000 for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

The cost for “Men Who Cook” is $40 per person; $75 per couple.

The price is $10 for children between 6 and 12; kids 5 and under can attend for free. And of course, there’s no need to dress up for this casual, fun and affordable event.

“Our talented chefs are raising the stakes in what’s going to be the toughest competition in ‘Men Who Cook’ history,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “We can never guess

who will go home with the winning ribbons. But we know for certain our guests won’t leave hungry after sampling the many fine dishes that will be offered that evening.”

Choosing your favorite chefs and bidding on silent auction items this year will be faster and easier than ever before as all votes will be submitted and tabulated on mobile phones or other electronic devices.

WJOL’s Lynne, Mary and Natalie will return to the “Men Who Cook” Red Carpet to welcome guests.

Therapy dogs Jackson and Kiwi, both of whom comfort the victims of abuse at the Children’s Advocacy Center’s through the Paws 4 Kids program, will have their own table.

And as always, there will be fun for youngsters at the “Men Who Cook” Kids Corner.

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995 to im-

prove the investigation of child sexual abuse cases. The center’s professionally trained and compassionate staff performs childsensitive interviews when there are allegations of sexual or severe physical abuse. Children’s recorded statements have been used in the successful prosecution of thousands of predators.

The State’s Attorney founded the center as a 501-c-3 not-for-profit organization so it will not impact taxpayers. As a result, the center relies on grants, foundations and fundraisers like “Men Who Cook” to fulfill its important mission.

LTHS Engineers earn 3rd place at robotics challenge

6 Lockport Township High School engineering design students participated at competition at JJC On Friday, Feb. 10, six Lockport Township High School engineering design students participated in the Robotics Engineering Challenge held at Joliet Junior College.

This year, LTHS was represented by two teams each consisting of three students. These two teams competed against 24 other

teams from schools all over the JJC district.

At the competition, each team is required to build and program a robot. The robot must perform various tasks to solve the three challenges given. The robot must do this while in autonomous mode, which means the robot

must be capable of sensing its environment, navigating and performing the tasks without human interaction.

The LTHS team of Joseph Fill, Andrew Dugan and Norman Eallonardo, placed third in the beginning robot category. The other LTHS team who participated included Ian Cozzi, Dale Westberg and Victoria Hennessey.

“This was a new robotics engineering contest for my Engineering Design students yet they

were able to apply their problem solving, measurement, geometry, programming and design skills to complete the challenges.” said Jeff Brown, Engineering De-

sign teacher. “It was a lot of fun and enhanced my knowledge of robotic engineering, and what robots can do for humans,” said Andy Dugan.

Help spread the word to end disrespectful language I was beaming with pride one morning in spring 2002.

This was the best day so far of my sixth grade year in junior high as I had just made the honor roll list for the first time. The honor roll list was posted in the front lobby of the school. I was standing behind some of my peers, none of whom was diagnosed with disabilities. All of a sudden something hit me like a brick: “Why is that retard on the list?” I heard a few of my peers say, not knowing who might be standing behind them.

Because of these hurtful comments, I was shy among my peers for the rest of my junior high school days.

“Using the ‘r-word’ against us [Special Olympics] athletes hurts us because most people don’t think before they actually say the words,” said Georgia Hunter, my friend and fellow athlete and Global Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois. Georgia was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

A week ago on March 1, hundreds of thousands of people across the country were spreading awareness in the ninth annual w campaign. I had an opportunity to give a speech that day to approximately 700 students at Pontiac Township High School in Pontiac, Ill. on how the “r-word” has affected me and why this campaign is important. I learned soon after my speech that the words I spoke touched many people.

For those of us with special needs, as well as for our family and friends, the word “retard(ed),” or the “r-word” as it is referred to in the campaign, is offensive — even when the word is not directed toward us. If someone uses the “r-word” about an inanimate object to mean that the object is slow or annoying, this connotes indirectly that those of us with special needs might learn or act a little slower than others.

“The cool thing about Spread the Word to End the Word is that there are thousands of events across the country, and everyone kind of goes about it a bit differently,” said Tim Shriver Jr., cofounder of the campaign. “Every event has a pledge banner where people sign their name and take the pledge to not only stop using the ‘r-word’ [themselves’] but to speak up when others use it.”

Besides ending the “r-word,” the campaign has a broader focus for the future. The campaign strives to create a community of tolerance, equality,

understanding, and respect for all people—in particular for those of us with special needs. Self-advocacy is part of that broader focus.

“The importance of self-advocates is a huge part of what we do,” said Soeren Palumbo, a co-founder with Tim Shriver Jr. of the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. “Each person has an incredibly rich story that’s behind their reason to take a pledge to improve the world for people with intellectual disabilities.”

Before I spoke to the Pontiac high school students, I was standing outside the auditorium talking with Laura Baumgardner, a Special Education teacher who champions the Spread the Word to End the Word activities at her school. Baumgardner told me that the elementary school students in her school district are learning that the “r-word” means “respect.” These children do not necessarily even know that the other “r-word” (retard) is used as a derogatory term— hate speech— about those of us with intellectual and developmental differences. As for the Pontiac high school students, the word “respect” is so engrained in them as the only “r-word” of choice. This was evidenced by what a respectful audience they were for me. These are the leaders of the future. The youth of today, affectionately named the “Unified Generation” by Special Olympics, will lead us to a respectful world of understanding and inclusion for those of us with special needs.

When I was born three-and-a-third months premature 28-years ago, people commonly used the “r-word” as an acceptable term to describe people with visible and invisible intellectual differences. Fast forward to present day, medical professionals and the mainstream community at large are becoming more understanding and respectful with their word choice.

Take my sister, Stefanie Smrokowski,

26, for example. She is a doctor of physical therapy and has grown up with an older brother who has special needs.

She feels encouraged about the declining use of the “r-word” among medical professionals.

“It’s becoming very common knowledge that you should not use that word,” Stefanie said, adding that she rarely hears the word, especially among younger physical therapists. “There are still some people that maybe aren’t as aware of that, but I think in general we’re all going towards that being common sense to not use that word.”

Soeren hopes that the trend within the medical community extends to the mainstream community as well. “What we’re hoping is there’s that same trend in the wider community,” said Soeren.

My friend Tim Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics, Inc., said that trend is encouraging.

“Your sister’s quote gives us all confidence that we can win the battle against humiliation and ‘play unified’ to teach respect the world over,” he wrote in an email regarding a previous Special Voices column.

There are, of course, those who still use the “r-word.” Rob Johnson, a leading news anchor for CBS-2 Chicago, hopes that those who still use the “rword” to mean something that is dumb or less than, do a better job with their word choice.

“If you use the words ‘retard’ or ‘retarded’ to explain something that doesn’t make sense, then I would say to you that you do not have a very good command of the English language and you can do better,” said Rob Johnson.

When someone in the mainstream community befriends or plays unified with someone with special needs, they will soon discover the joy and accomplishments that the person has. Despite cognitive struggles that myself and others with special needs face on a daily basis, we overcome our challenges by celebrating the abilities that we do have.

Batteries in a smoke alarm should be changed at least twice a year.

The peak time for home fire fatalities is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when most families are

asleep. Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. A working smoke alarm can give your family the extra seconds you need to get out of a home fire safely. In addition, families should plan and practice their home fire escape plan, knowing “two ways out” and how they would assist children and those who may require assistance.

The following safety tips about smoke alarms could save lives: � Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. For extra safety install smoke alarms both inside and outside any sleeping areas, especially if you sleep with your bedroom door closed. � Keep smoke alarms clean. Dust

can interfere with how your smoke alarm works. Regularly vacuum over your smoke alarm. � The chirping noise you may hear could mean your battery is low. Replace the battery right away. � Replace your smoke alarms about every 10 years. They do wear out, so write the purchase date with a marker on the back of your smoke alarm. That way you know when it should be replaced.

Joliet West uses seasoned talent to hold off young Romeoville teams

Friday night’s Plainfield Central Regional final between Joliet West and Romeoville was a battle of experience vs. youth.

The Tigers came in as defending regional champs and had four senior starters.

Meanwhile, it had been several years since the Spartans competed in a regional championship and had just one senior starter.

That helped lead to a 72-44 Joliet West win for its second straight regional title.

“We’re happy with the outcome,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “Being back to back regional champions is special.

This senior group definitely has something they can talk to their kids about. It’s been a two-year journey with most of these guys.

The experiences they had last year are different this year. The only way I can explain it is first time you drive a car, you are

nervous and anxious. But after a year, it is second nature.”

“You have to tip your cap to West,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “Their seniors came out and basically in a win or go home, they showed their experience and their battletested background and it proved too strong tonight.”

West jumped out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter and 36-22 at the half.

“We wanted to come out and prove a point,” West point guard Teyvion Kirk said. “We wanted to set the tone early and come out with a lot of energy and intensity. We wanted to take a big lead and coast the rest of the way. (In the other games) we built a big lead and took them lightly. We wanted to get up big and keep it big.”

In the first two meetings, West built up a big lead only to see Romeoville come back both times in the second half. This time that wouldn’t be the case SEE RULES PAGE 10

Moody wins national invite title Junior Jenna Moody (Joliet, Ill./ Plainfield Central) captured the first national individual title in University of St. Francis history on the final day of the 2017 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon to help lead the Saints to a fourth-place finish – their highest-ever.

Moody clocked a time of 55.72 seconds to take top honors in the 400-meter dash, thus securing the first-ever individual national championship by a USF athlete in NAIA competition. With 35 points, USF finished in fourth place to claim a team trophy as a national top-four finisher for the first time in the program’s history. Indiana Institute of Technology won the national title with 73 points, followed by Oklahoma City University (59) and Wayland Baptist University (39).

Moody collected another All-America trophy later in the day when she crossed the line in fourth place in the 60-meter dash (7.70). She garnered a third award – and the sixth of her career – when she teamed with juniors Catherine Crosson (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield North), Lesley Lopez (Lyons, Ill./ Morton) and Ashlee Knott (Washington, Ill./ Washington) to finish fifth in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:10.95. Crosson, Lopez and Knott each claimed their third career All-America certificate –

all in the DMR. Senior Isi Edeko (Bellwood, Ill./ Walther Lutheran) turned in USF’s first All-America performance of the day with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump after clearing a distance of 11.71 meters (38’ 5”). The AllAmerica award was the fourth of her career.

Senior Raven Kelly (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) followed Edeko with her second All-America certificate of the weekend and fourth of her career with a fourth-place showing in the shot put event (14.13 meters, 46’ 4.25”). Kelly placed third in the weight throw on Friday.

In the mile run, Knott fell one spot short of earning a place on the awards podium with a ninth-place finish (5:13.43).

SOFTBALL Junior left fielder Brooke Karraker (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) hit for the cycle as the University of St. Francis softball team opened its spring break trip with a pair of victories Sunday at the Tucson Invitational Games. After defeating Bethany Lutheran College 15-3 in the first game, the Saints downed William Penn University 8-1 in the nightcap.

With the two wins, USF improved to 5-1 on the year.

Bethany Lutheran fell to 2-6, while William Penn dropped to 9-6.

BASEBALL The University of St. Francis baseball team opened its spring break trip with a 9-6 loss to Ave Maria University Sunday afternoon.

With its second straight setback, USF fell to 8-5 on the season, while Ave Maria improved to 9-13. Sunday’s game marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Saints led 3-2 after three and a half innings and 5-3 after four and a half, but the Gyrenes plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

USF loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth – placing the tying run on first base – but the Saints’ final batter lined into a game-ending double play.

Junior shortstop Tom Smith (New Lenox, Ill./ Lockport) reached base in three of his four plate appearances, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, in addition to driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice.

Sophomore second baseman John Riordan (Chicago, Ill./ St. Laurence) went 2-for-2, including a ninthinning single.

Junior pitcher Kevin Mampe (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central) suffered his first loss in three decisions on the year after allowing six runs on six hits and four and a third innings of work.

He was one of five USF hurlers in the contest.

Steelmen earn regional championship

After helping the Joliet Central boys basketball team to a regional title last week, Jose Grubbs had a certain thank you that he wanted to say.

“All the glory to God,” the Steelmen senior guard said.

Joliet Central has certainly been blessed to have him.

Grubbs scored a team-high 17 points and added seven rebounds as the Steelmen continued their season with a 59-49 victory over Lincoln-Way East on Friday, March 3, in the title game of the Class 4A Joliet Central Regional Central (23-5) won its second straight regional title and 44th overall - including district titles, in its 112 year history, which had 77 seasons as Joliet Township.

East (20-11), which was the No. 6 seed in its own sectional, completed an outstanding season in which it reached 20 wins for the first time in its 16 year history.

As he had many times during the season, junior guard Sam Shafer paced the Griffins with gamehigh totals of 18 points and nine rebounds.

The third seeded Steelmen faced No. 2 seed Joliet West, a 72-44 winner over No. 7 seeded Romeoville in the Plainfield Central Regional title game, on Wednesday, March 8 in the second sectional semifinal at Lincoln-Way East. Top seeded Bolingbrook, a 63-54 winner over Lemont in the Sandburg Regional championship game, faced No. 5 seeded West Aurora - a 64-54 winner over No.13 seed Neuqua Valley in the title game of the Plainfield North Regional, on Tuesday, March 7 in the first sectional semifinal.

The sectional title game is set for Friday, March 10 at 7 p.m.

“These kids have been great to coach and they knew what to do,” Central coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr. said. “They listen to the coaching staff. The first day of practice I told them everyone

is a guard. You have to be able to handle the ball and shoot.”

Thompson took over as coach this season after spending the previous one as sophomore coach at Joliet West. Before that he was the head coach at Lockport Township for 16 seasons.

“It’s been great, it’s been outstanding,” Thompson said of his first season as Steelmen coach. “I want to thank [Joliet West coach] Nick DiForti for getting me back into coaching and [Central AD] Steve Locke for the opportunity here.”

While the two teams didn’t play this season, Thompson was certainly familiar with East, having faced the Griffins numerous times as head coach of Lockport.

“Make no mistake about it,” Thompson said. “East is a wellcoached team and they came to play.”

The Griffins did, even after getting behind early. Still it was a scorching Steelmen start that helped propel them to the win.

Four different players scored and Central hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter in racing out to a 17-4 lead after the period.

The score was tied once, at 2-2 on a pair of Dorian Aluyi free throws a minute: 40 into the game. Sam Shafer hit the Griffins only basket of the quarter, a 17foot jumper with 4:48 left in the quarter, which made it 8-4. But the Steelmen scored nine straight points, including five by senior forward Ryan King (5 points), to end the quarter.

“We come out of the gates and shoot threes, everyone is fresh and they all think they can make them,” said Thompson, who saw his team hit four of them in the first quarter. “Then we settled down and played.”

The Griffins, who rallied from deficits of 13-0 and 17-3 on Friday, Feb. 17 to hand Bolingbrook its only loss of the season by a score of 65-64, began a comeback in the second quarter. Junior guard Zach Parduhn (10 points) and Sam Shafer, who capped off the

spurt with a steal and a layup, each had four points in the stretch which closed East within 19-17 with 3:30 left in the half.

At that point the Griffins were 5-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line after going 1-of-8 from the field in the first quarter.

They never got a shot off the rest of the half, however, turning the ball over five times in the final 2:56. Central took advantage by scoring the last eight points of the half for a 27-17 lead at intermission. Senior guard Jason Bingham, who scored all nine of his points in the first half on 3-pointers, hit one of those in that quarter ending run.

Grubbs opened the third quarter with a layup, but East came back with a 10-0 run in just over a minute time. Included in that were three straight baskets where the Griffins were fouled.

In fact East had a pair of opportunities after that to take the lead, missfiring on two 3-pointers. The Steelmen then put together another spurt, this one an 11-1 one, during which junior forward Ryan Saunders scored all five of his points, to go ahead 40-28 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.

Central led 42-32 after three.

“Everyone has to play their role on this team,” Saunders said.

“We are not one person, we are a team, whether you start or are on the bench. This is a very special group. Jose [Grubbs] is our special glue, but this is truly a team.”

Trailing 44-33 two minutes into the fourth quarter, the Griffins had one more comeback attempt.

Junior forward Brandon Petkoff (6 points) hit a 3-pointer to start it and they closed within 44-40 when senior forward Max Shafer (3 points) hit the first of two free throws with 3:53 remaining.

Bingham fouled out on that play, adding to East’s chances.

“I reminded them at halftime that both of our previous games with them we were up by 20 and they went on a big run,” DiForti said. “I even did it at the time outs. They put up numbers quick and I didn’t want to go through it.”

“Last year we played in two close games and this year it was two blowouts, so that was kind of different,” West forward Trevian Bell said. “But this was more of a statement game for us for the area and that we aren’t the kind of team everyone says we are.

We are a lot more mature than last year. We start four seniors.

Our mentality has changed. We have one goal and that is the state championship. Every game we want to play like our last.”

Kirk finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds from his point guard position, while Bell added 16 points and seven rebounds as the tandem spearheaded a fast paced attack.

“It’s a new dimension for me being a rebounder,” Kirk said. “Me being a point guard, I can start the break early. I

close the Griffins within 46-43.

Central then missed a pair of free throws, but East turned the ball over and the Steelmen scored the next five points.

A pair of free throws by Aluyi (8 points), who is a senior forward, with 1:23 left gave the Griffins hope. But Grubbs quickly ended that 11 seconds later as he was banged to the ground, but powered the ball up and it went in. He completed the 3-point play to make it 54-45.

“We play very hard and physical everyday in practice,” Grubbs said of being knocked down and making the shot. “So anything in a game is not a surprise.”

Following a free throw, senior guard Jo Jo McNair (10 points, 5 rebounds) had a capping Steelmen slam with 38 seconds to play for a 57-45 lead. That started the celebration for Central, which also got seven points from junior guard Cameron Blackmon.

“This is special, hopefully this is just the beginning,” Grubbs said. “We had lots of fight and it was very important to come out of the locker room and get off to a good start on our home floor.

East shot 15-of-37 (40.5 percent) from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, and 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) from the line while committing 16 turnovers. Junior guard Joey Buggemi added four points in the game for the Griffins, who were playing in their first regional title game since 2011 an have never won one.

The Steelmen shot 21-of44 (47.7 percent) from the field - hitting eight shots from downtown, and 9-of-15 (60 percent) from the line with 13 turnovers. Senior guard Marcellus Hornsby (4 points) and junior guard Don Joachim (2 points) also contributed for Central.

“They shot the ball exceptionally-well early and knocked down some threes, that took the wind out of our sails,” East coach Rich Kolimas said. “It took a lot to come back and we got close but couldn’t tip the scales to our favor. They’re a very quick team and when they shoot it well and spread the floor, it makes it difficult. Coach Thompson has done a tremendous job with his team. He’s got them playing defense and their offense is very disciplined.”

The Tigers now take on city rival Joliet Central at 7 p.m.

“We’re going to use this game as momentum for sectionals,” Kirk said. “We’re going to take this one step at a time, one game at a time. Hopefully we can get to Peoria. We are playing our best and are only going to get better.”

“This gives us tons of momentum and a lot of confidence going into sectionals,” Bell said.

While the Spartans’ season drew to a close, the experience won’t be one lost on the school and community.

“It was a good experience

for us and our student body,” Howard said.”It has been a while since we have been a part of a regional championship game and I’m very proud of the school and community for how they backed us tonight. It is our goal to bring them back into this environment in the near future and have us hold up that trophy for Romeoville.”

With all of the youth on the roster, it appears the Spartans are in good shape to get back to a regional final next year.

“Our guys are hungry, that is one thing I’m really impressed about,” Howard said. “They want to achieve big things. They see themselves getting to the state tournament. That is what the strive for. They talk about it all the time. It isn’t just about conference wins, it is about bigger things. There is so much success around us with Joliet West and Bolingbrook. Our guys want to be one of those stories going forward.”

The Spartans finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 16-12 record.

“It is a successful year,” Howard said. “Ultimately, we are looking to define success by achieving trophies in regionals and sectionals.”

Your last will and testament is one of the most important legal documents you’ll ever be part of.

So, being in debt is a guaranteed way to stay broke.

Number Two, you can get a home mortgage with no credit score through a manual underwriting. Just make sure you have a good, long history of paying other things, like your rent and utilities

on time. You would also need to have all your debts paid off completely, and the accounts closed for at least six months. I want you to become debt-free before you buy a home, Maria. I also want you to save an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses and a down payment before you buy a home.

Buying a house when you’re broke and in debt is a really bad idea.
