Preserves hosting national quilt exhibit Save the date for first showing of entire national parks quilt exhibit in Illinois For the first time since it debuted in 2016, the entire national parks quilt exhibit will be on display in Illinois when it opens to the public in June at four Forest Preserve District of Will County locations.

People who love the national parks, quilting – or both – should save the date for this fantastic fabric fete to the country’s natural areas. Though portions of the quilt exhibit were displayed in Illinois in 2016 and 2017, this will be the first time in the state that all 177 quilts included in the collection will be available for viewing.

Four Forest Preserve visitor centers will each host around onequarter of the quilts starting Sunday, June 17, and running through

Tuesday, July 3. The free “Inspired by the National Parks” quilt exhibition was spearheaded by Donna DeSoto, a member of the Fairfax, Va., chapter of Quilters Unlimited.

Each quilt is a work of art incorporating materials and objects reflective of the park it represents.

The collection highlights 59 national parks in all, with three quilts

representing each park’s flora, fauna and landscape.

Quilts will be on display simultaneously from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Tuesdays-Saturdays and noon-4 p.m. Sundays at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in

Channahon, Isle a la Cache Museum Romeoville, Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township near Beecher and Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet.

Registration is not required for this free, all-ages event.

More quilt exhibit information will be posted on the Forest Preserve District’s website, ReconnectWithNature.org, prior to the exhibit opening.

West presents “The Addams Family” as spring musical This year’s annual Joliet West High School Spring Musical is sure to be unforgettable. “The Addams Family,” with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, is Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m. in the Joliet West Auditorium, 401 North Larkin Avenue in Joliet.

“The Addams Family” features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. ExxonMobil Women’s Interest Network inspires students The JTHS Academies rely on community partnerships to round out academics with real world experience. To that end forty female students participated in career exploration during one-on-one lunch conversations with members of ExxonMobil’s Women’s

Interest Network (WIN) during an onsite visit to the refinery on February 22.

A variety of careers were represented among the ExxonMobil employees including engineering, nursing, finance, pipefitting, operations, administration, maintenance technician and more. “We are so impressed with the students who came,” says Refinery Manager Monica Mainland. “They are enthusiastic and inquisitive and they took full advantage of the time they spent here to learn about our education, professional and on-the-job training, and the paths we took to where we are today.”

“What I learned from this amazing experience is that there are so many different career opportunities in the ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery,” said student Karla Alarcon. “I also did not know that there were so many women working there and with very fascinating jobs.

This experience was very eye-opening for me.”

The recent refinery visit is just one of the many partnerships the high school has with the ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery. Employees mentor students throughout the school year through BBBS mentor2.0, the Be an Engineer curricular program, and Job Shadowing.

In addition, a refinery visit is scheduled for March where forty male JTHS students will participate in career-themed lunch conversations structured similarly to the February 22 visit for the JTHS female students.

Troy students give reading lessons to Marycrest Early Childhood Center students Several William B. Orenic Intermediate School 5th graders recently shared their love of reading with Marycrest Early Childhood Center students in Joliet.

The older students had created literacy lessons and

activities to do with the preschool students, helping show them how much fun reading can be.

The visit was the culmination of a project in the W.B.O. class, Citizenship through Community Service, taught by teacher Chelsea Stoltz. Each trimester, students enrolled in the class choose the service project they want to pursue and prepare for it, including working on the interpersonal skills they will need for the service. The lessons, according to Stoltz, help them understand the varying needs of different students, and why giving of their time is good for the community.

The projects culminate with field trips.

“It’s really been a fantastic partnership,” Marycrest Principal Penny Greenwood said. “The Troy students come in well-prepared, and our kids really get excited.

Even kids who don’t normally join in when they’re in a large group love it. The Troy kids do just a great job, and our teachers are always impressed by what they bring to our students.”

“These service trips are a great opportunity for students at W.B.O. to learn about community service,” Stoltz said. “They get to see how much they can help the people of our community, and they also see that serving can be fun and exciting. The students learn a lot about themselves, as well. They learn about skills they did not know they had, and they exude empathy and kindness.”

Students in the Troy W.B.O. class this trimester also went on service trips to Operation Care Package, where they prepared packages from start to finish to send to deployed American soldiers, and to the St. John Lutheran Church Food Pantry, where they helped clients collect and bag groceries and helped them to their cars. Stoltz said her students learned that there is a thin line between adults being able to provide for themselves and their families, and needing a little help to make ends meet.

Officials amend codes regulating dogs Structured protocol involves police investigation

The Shorewood Village Board of Trustees tightened municipal codes regulating dogs at a Feb. 27 meeting.

Trustees Dan Anderson and Dan Warren, joined by Chief of Police Aaron Klima, Village Administrator Roger Barrowman, and Associate Attorney Bryan Wellner, of Mahoney, Silverman & Cross, were tasked last year with reviewing the Village’s ordinance in the wake of a pitbull attack that later led to the death of a Shorewood family’s dog.

Karen and Rick Strysik approached the Village Board in December 2017 to give an update on their four-legged companion, and the two were on hand last week to find out what course of action the Village can take to prevent similar type tragedies from occurring.

“We basically took out some of the more obsolete parts of the ordinance, and we added more teeth to this ordinance,” Ander-

son said.

Wellner said the biggest change is they implemented a more structured procedure for how the chief of police makes a finding that a dog is either vicious or dangerous, depending on the circumstance.

“The most important thing throughout that process is having not only the police department involved, but also the victim and the dog owner,” he said.

Once a complaint is made, an investigating officer goes out to the scene to collect some of the initial evidence. A notice will be sent to dog owner, and it is at that point, the investigation is pending.

“What that notice will provide is the dog owner then has the opportunity to come to the investigating officer, provide their own statements, and even provide their supplemental information, such as a behavioral report from a dog expert,” Wellner said. “That will not only assist in helping Chief Klima make a proper finding of whether or not this dog could be dangerous or vicious, but it also provides the dog owners some opportunity for their voice to be heard and for some explanation to be had about what may have happened.”

“The way the laws in the state are going, they seem to be going

much more dog-friendly,” Wellner said. “Not only are we giving the Village of Shorewood more authority to regulate these dogs and make sure that the homeowners are safe, but also ensuring that they are heard and a procedure is in place before a finding is made.

“For specifically the dangerous dog finding, what will be presented to Chief Klima is the evidence, and he’ll make a finding simply based on the evidence presented—no specific hearing, an informal process where the statements can be given by the dog owner, as well as the victims,” Wellner said.

“He’s making that finding based on what’s presented to him informally.”

As for vicious dogs faced with more serious implications, the dog owner will be provided an administrative hearing, in which they can be represented by an attorney, or themselves, before the chief of police to make their case against the findings.

Once any findings are made, the dog owner is provided an appeal process of 35 days, and a notice will be given out at that time.

In those cases, the dog owner will need to make an appeal with the circuit court.

Under the amended code, Shorewood can assess fines, as well as impose measures requir-

ing a stronger leash, muzzle, mandatory confinement, and other restrictions.

The Village is also extended the authority to request that a dog is euthanized in certain cases.

“That is a last resort,” Wellner said.

Another change of the note to municipal codes pertains to making sure that control is given to the Village over a dog if any serious allegations of serious physical injury or death to a dog, or to any person, occurs. In such a case, the chief of police is granted the ability to impound a dog until an investigation is completed.

“It would not be released until either a court orders its release or a finding is made that a dog is not dangerous or vicious,” Wellner said.

Mayor Rick Chapman questioned if there’s anything the Village can do to tweak the code with respect to allowing 35 days for a dog owner to appeal.

Village Attorney Dave Silverman explained that the ordinance is able to affect the results the Village seeks, but also not get overturned on appeals.

The Village passed the original codes with respect to dogs in 2008.

Since that time, the vicious dog has been declared about 8 or 10 times and the dangerous dog

has been identified about 40 to 50 times, Wellner said. The ordinance has been improved, especially with respect to vicious dogs.

Anderson said he thinks “We got what we were looking for.”

In a 6-0 vote, the board waived the second read and went on to approve the ordinance, as amended, with respect to dogs.

Round up A brief recap of action and discussion Feb. 27 at a regular meeting of the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees: A motion was passed to approve a measure withdrawing the Village from Southwest Agency for Health Management and Intergovernmental Personnel Benefit Cooperative.

Officials approved a resolution accepting public improvements and releasing the improvement bond in the amount of $351,373.87 for Edgewater Unit 4.

A motion was passed to approve a payment of $11,361.37 to Christopher B. Burke Engineering for professional services at Route 52 and River Road Phase III. The board authorized a payment of $376,146.73 to D Construction for an intersection project at Route 52 and Wynstone Drive.

Dogs invited to Hugs for Hounds event Dogs invited to retrieve Easter eggs at 10th annual ‘Hugs for Hounds’ in Shorewood The 10th annual “Hugs for Hounds Easter Egg Hunt” will get cracking on Saturday, March 31, at Hammel Woods in Shorewood.

Thousands of plastic eggs filled with doggy treats and prizes will be located in the grass in a fenced-off area within the dog park at Hammel Woods – DuPage River Access, located on Black Road, east of Route 59.

Once Fido’s nose touches an egg, the dog’s owner can place it into a basket or bag.

The entry fee for the egg hunt is $5 per dog. Registration is required.

The day’s activities also include a special appearance by the Easter bunny and a raffle for dog-themed Easter baskets.

Also, your pup could be recognized in contests for the smallest and largest dogs, the best-costumed dog, the dog that traveled the farthest to attend the event, and the dog that looks the most like its owner.

Proceeds from the event will be donated by Shorewood HUGS to the Forest Preserve for the care, handling and training of the District’s police K-9, Jullo.

Shorewood HUGS is a local, nonprofit agency that hosts events and raises funds to make a positive impact in the community.

Lincoln pivotal in securing Springfield as state capital

BY KATE SCHOTT OF THE STATE JOURNALREGISTER When state lawmakers head to the Capitol to do the people’s business, they travel to Sp r i n g f i e l d .

But that wasn’t always the case.

Springfield became the state’s third capital city in 1839. And the story of how Springfield became the capital is a tall tale … well, it’s a tale with an outcome scripted by nine tall men.

Illinois has been governed from three cities and six buildings (one that was rented and five that were owned by the state), as told in an article in the 1975-76 edition of the legislative Illinois Blue Book. Kaskaskia was the first state capital after Illinois was admitted to the union in 1818, with the 29 House members and 14 senators in the first General Assembly of Illinois working in a rented two-story brick building at a cost of $4 per day.

Yet by December 1820, the second General Assembly was meeting in a new building in a new capital city, Vandalia, which was a more central location within the state’s original 16 southern counties. Lawmakers agreed Vandalia would remain the capital city for at least the next 20 years.

But it didn’t take long for many Illinois lawmakers - including a young state legislator who would go on to become the nation’s 16th president - to cite location as they began petitioning for the capital to be moved again. The argument this time for relocating was that the capital should be closer to the geographical center of the state.

In 1833 the General Assembly decided to ask voters, via the next general election, to weigh in on where the capital should be, according to the Blue Book history. Vandalia, Jacksonville, Springfield, Peoria, Alton and the state’s actual geographical center were the options. Although Alton emerged with a slim majority, the results were ruled inconclusive.

The idea of moving the capital continued to percolate, with talk put into action during the 1836-37 legislative session when Abraham Lincoln intro-

duced legislation that would move the capital to Springfield. He had the backing of eight legislative colleagues of the Whig Party who were called the Long Nine, as their aggregate height was 54 feet, according to the history provided in the 1975-76 Blue Book.

An opponent to Springfield as the new location was a legislative foe Lincoln knew well; Stephen A. Douglas, who also was serving in the General Assembly and wanted Jacksonville to be the state capital. And the people of Vandalia weren’t about to give up easily: They built a new brick statehouse in an attempt to keep the legislature where it was.

That effort was for naught, as after four balloting attempts Springfield received the majority of votes needed to move the state capital. There have been allegations over the years that the Long Nine traded favors in order for Springfield to emerge triumphant, although Sen. Paul Simon in his book “Lincoln’s Preparation for Greatness” disputed that notion. Regardless of how the decision came to pass, state government began operating in Springfield by the end of 1839.

Work began in 1837 on a new Capitol building on the Springfield Town Square, with the first Capitol building providing room for the state House and Senate, the governor and other elected officials, as well as housing the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the book “A. Lincoln: His Illinois,” published by The State Journal-Register in 2008.

As the state’s population grew, so too

did its government, and within a few decades a bigger building was needed to accommodate the elected officials.

Construction began on the current Capitol building in 1868 and was finished in 1888, although lawmakers moved in about halfway through the construction process. The first building, now known as the Old State Capitol, remains and is often used for reenactments, performances, rallies and political speeches.

As the state’s capital, Springfield has witnessed some of the most important political moments in Illinois history. It’s where Lincoln gave his “House Divided” speech, in which he condemned slavery. Almost 150 years later, it’s where Barack Obama announced in 2007 he was running for president of the United States.

Of course, it’s also where four governors who later went to prison on various charges served as chief executive of the state. And as long as Springfield remains Illinois’ capital city, it will continue to be where some of the most politically important decisions about Illinois are made.

Resolution sessions help youngsters Will County’s conflict resolution sessions help youngsters open up

When Minerva Spurlock arrived as an intern in the Will County Health Department Behavioral Health Division about three months ago, she had a specific objective. As a doctoral student at Walden University in Minneapolis, Spurlock was instructed by both her Walden professors as well as American Psychological Association guidelines to “be a facilitator for a great amount of people.”

Spurlock is pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology. So to help get youngsters who were already clients of the Health Department’s Behavioral Health Program “think a little differently,” the simple question was: “How?” “The interns brainstormed,” Spurlock recalled. “We thought about doing an anger management group, but finally decided on the coping skills group because we’d be able to get into other emotions besides anger, and therefore involve more kids.”

Soon, between posting flyers around the Behavioral Health Division, word of mouth among the interns, and shared information with kids who were already receiving counseling and their parents, two “Conflict Resolution” classes were established.

“For group sessions, it is typical to run a program that lasts between eight and 12 weeks,” Spurlock explained. “We have about 10 kids in the 13-and-older class and just a couple more in the 12-andunder class.”

The interns created a 10-week program schedule of hour-long sessions. Spurlock joined Sierrah Avant and Jennifer vonPerbandt in working with the older kids, and Grace Domzalski and Nakia Hubbard were assigned to work with the younger kids. At the halfway point of five down and five to go, Spurlock said some very significant changes were noticed in how the students approach the

sessions.

“They are getting into the habit of following rules, understanding boundaries, and not talking over each other. In addition, they are speaking out more, and more confidently. It’s great to see a client, who starts the program being somewhat disruptive, learning how to apply conflict resolution techniques, and be able to calm down and feel more positive.”

Spurlock also said one specific instance she recalls is two students realizing they had something in common.

“The students open up when they realize they are not alone, and are surprised to know some of them are experiencing and going through the same things. For

example, a shy kid might open up and share that he has been bullied at school; and then a more talkative, outgoing kid will speak up and say he has been bullied too. And outside of these sessions, they may never have talked to one another and realized this. These group sessions allow the kids to see that they have more in common with each other than they first thought.”

So what should the result be for these youngsters once all 10 sessions have taken place?

“I think,” Spurlock said, “one of the main goals is for them to have gained a mindfulness, and simply be aware they have conflict resolution tools they can apply to life situations. One kid said he tried counting to ten instead of acting out. He admitted he doesn’t like doing it, but still tried it. We told him the fact that he was open to trying this is very good. Another one told us he ‘just went to his room,’ and decided to try something else besides ‘just acting out.’ Each week we ask them, ‘Has anyone had a chance to

try out the strategies we have been learning about?’”

Director of Clinical Training and Licensed Psychologist Dr. Rita Gray says the interns are proving to be a huge asset to the Health Department.

“The clients we serve are fortunate to have knowledgeable and dedicated interns to conduct groups around conflict resolution.

Since relationship conflicts are bound to happen, learning to deal with them in a healthy way is vital.

These group leaders are teaching the youngsters skills that will help them into adolescence and beyond.”

And after the conflict resolution classes end in March, at least two more group sessions are lined up, including an LGBTQ group and a healthy relationships group. Spurlock is scheduled to be with the Will County Health Department through this coming September.

There are many gifts people get every year that are just worth returning.

That tie from your wife for Father’s Day, the shirt two sizes too small on your birthday or the hideous sweater your aunt gives you on Christmas.

There are also those gifts that you hold dear and use to make everything in your life just a little bit better.

That was what Joliet Central did in the IHSA Class 4A Oswego East Regional.

The No. 4 seeded Steelmen (23-5) took what coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr. called a “gift” win over No. 13 Yorkville in the regional semifinal and turned that into a 49-38 over the host Wolves and their third consecutive regional title.

It did, however, have some assembly required.

Central found itself trailing by four with two minutes gone in the final quarter, but the Steelmen used an 18-0 run over the final six minutes to secure the win.

In the win, Don Joachim and Cameron Blackmon each scored 13 points for Central, while Ryan Saunders added seven.

In the regional opener win over Yorkville, Joliet Central needed to withstand a tough fight from the Foxes for the 53-46 victory.

“We got a gift. Yorkville deserves all the credit,” Thompson said. “They outworked us and we were fortunate with all the fouls we had to have a two-point lead at the half. Dieringer fires perfect game for Saints Morghan Dieringer (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) kicked off the University of St. Francis softball team’s 2018 season by throwing a perfect game as the Saints split a doubleheader with Madonna University.

USF 12, Madonna 0 (5 innings) Dieringer struck out nine as she tossed the first perfect game of her USF career in a 12-0 season-opening victory.

The Crusaders’ best chance at a base runner came in the fourth inning. Two Madonna batters sent long fly balls into left field that were tracked down on the run by Hailey Lenth (Colona, Ill./Muscatine CC). Dieringer left no doubt in the fifth, striking out the side.

Offensively, the Saints broke the game open with an eightrun fourth inning. Ally Balandis (Burbank, Ill./Reavis), Kayla Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), Jensen Tchorzynski (Hillman, Mich./Delta College), Lenth and Katelyn Rolniak (Manteno, Ill./ Prairie State College) all recorded RBIs in the frame as St. Francis sent 12 batters to the plate.

USF added three more runs in the fifth, including a two-RBI single from Julie Czerniakowski (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka). Dieringer took the reigns from there as the Saints cruised to the victory.

Balandis led the team with three hits, while Tchorzynski

drove in three. Karraker, Lenth, Ashley Galason (Burbank, Ill./ Reavis) and Rolniak joined Balandis with multi-hit games.

Madonna 9, USF 7 (5 Innings) Madonna built an early lead and held off a late USF rally to split the doubleheader with a 9-7 win.

After the Crusaders surged ahead 8-0, USF got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Becca Stanton (Chicago Heights, Ill./Prairie State College) came through with a pinch-hit, two-RBI double down the right-field line.

Madonna put up another run in the top of the fifth, but the Saints mounted a furious comeback in the bottom of the inning. Anna Wetherell (Rock Island, Ill./Muscatine CC) led off the frame with a single and then stole second. Karraker doubled her home and Balandis followed with a long home run to centerfield, bringing the Saints within four at 9-5. Tchorzynski and Lenth added another run by drilling back-to-back one-out doubles. Galason chopped the ball through the middle to score Lenth and bring the tying run to the plate. However, Madonna was able to get out of the inning and the game was stopped due to an 11:30 p.m. curfew for lights at recreational facilities in Tucson.

Balandis finished with two hits, including the two-run homer to straightaway center.

Lenth recorded a pair of singles and scored twice, while Stanton finished with a pair driven in.

TENNIS The University of St. Francis men’s tennis team opened up its spring break trip with a 9-0 win over King’s College.

The Saints (4-2) earned a pair of 8-4 victories to begin doubles play. Ian Millan Vetokhin (Burriana, Spain/Prairie State College) and Lucas Navarro (Valencia, Spain/Cumbres School) won at the top spot, while Mike Hasler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and Thomas Schieffer (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) took No. 3. Avilash Mishra (Bhubaneswar, India/ Prairie State College) and Miguel Rayos del Sol (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) completed the sweep 8-5 at No. 2.

In singles play, USF clinched the match with wins from Navarro at No. 3 (6-1, 1-0, retired) and Millan Vetokhin at No. 2 (6-0, 6-4). Hasler finished next with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4, while Rayos del Sol followed with another Saint triumph by retirement (6-2, 2-1, retired).

Schieffer earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 and Mishra rounded out the sweep 6-0, 6-3 at the top spot.

BASEBALL Despite out-hitting NAIA No. 25-ranked Webber International University in both ends of

a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, University of St. Francis came out on the short end of each contest, dropping 5-2 and 7-6 decisions.

With the wins, Webber International (10-9) was able to take all three games of the weekend series, dropping the Saints to 4-7 on the season.

Game 1: Webber International 5, USF 2 Sophomore right fielder Travis Schoonover (Braidwood, Ill./ Reed-Custer) helped the Saints avoid being shutout in the opener with his run-scoring double to plate the first of two runs in USF’s final at-bat in the seventh inning. By that time, Webber International had already built a 5-0 lead through the first five innings off Saint starter John Riordan (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) (0-2) to fuel the win.

Schoonover, who also scored a run, was one of three St. Francis players to collect a pair of hits in the game. He was joined by sophomore catcher Zach Earls (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) and freshman shortstop Noah Kararo (Oswego, Ill./Home school), who also had a double.

Juan Terron (2-0) struck out six Saints in six scoreless innings to gain the win on the mound.

Game 2: Webber International 7, USF 6 Tanner Williams, who homered earlier in the game, ruined a late USF rally with a walk-off

single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Warriors the sweep of the Saints.

USF had taken an initial 2-0 lead in the third inning aided by a Webber International error and Anthony Faron’s (New Lenox, Ill./St. Rita) second runproducing groundout of the day, but the Warriors got both of those runs back and one more on Chris Medina’s three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. That started what would become a string of six unanswered runs over the next three innings allowing the hosts to build a 6-2 advantage after five frames.

Schoonover again sparked a late-inning rally for the Saints with another run-scoring hit before senior center fielder Pat Michalak (New Lenox, Ill./LincolnWay Central) cleared the bases with a three-run double to tie the contest at six-all in the sixth inning.

But one inning later, a oneout walk, hit batsman, wild pitch and intentional walk set the stage for William’s heroics in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Schoonover delivered his fourth straight multiple-hit game with a pair of singles, being joined by Michalak and Faron, who both went 2-for-4.

TRACK AND FIELD All-America performances in five events led the University of St. Francis men’s track & field team to an eighth-place showing at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, the highest national finish in program history.

Brian Blaylock (Lowell, Ind./ Lowell) kicked off Saturday’s action by placing third in the mile run with a career-best time of 4:10.61. He then teamed with Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./Peoria), John Principato (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and Misael Tobias (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield South) to take third in the distance medley relay.

Principato earned his second appearance on the podium in the 600-meter race when he crossed the finish line in seventh (1:20.85).

Akwasi Aikins (Joliet, Ill./ Plainfield Central) joined Ruffin (high jump) as USF All-Americans in field events. In the triple jump, Aikins jumped a career-best 15.20 meters to place fourth overall.

• The University of St. Francis women’s track & field team had All-America performances in five events at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. The Saints wrapped up the event in 15th place out of 51 teams.

Ashlee Knott (Washington, Ill./ Washington) and Jenna Moody (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) both found the podium twice over the weekend. After finishing seventh in the 3,200-meter relay on Friday, Knott’s careerbest time of 5:04.00 in the mile run ranked eighth. Moody posted the Saints’ highest finishes

of the championships by taking third in the 400-meter dash (55.59) and fifth in the 60-meter dash (career-best 7.67).

Celina Mayforth (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) earned the first All-America honor of her career in the 600-meter run (eighth place, 1:36.37).

On Friday, Sabrina Baftiri (Morris, Ill./Morris), Eva Bruno (Marseilles, Ill./Seneca) and Taylor Conroy (Marengo, Ill./ Marengo) were also named AllAmericans with Knott in the 3,200-meter relay.

The Saints begin their outdoor season later this month.

“We played as a team,” Joachim said. “We knew we didn’t want to go home. Either you bring it or you go home.”

The Joliet Central seniors were not going out of the regional without a fight.

“It was win or go home,” Blackmon said. “We have a lot of seniors on this team and we have been in this position before.”

That means you’ve already paid off all your debt, except for your home, and you’ve increased your $1,000 beginner’s emergency fund to a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes where the house is concerned.

Since she’s still able to make decisions independently, the will should be legally updated to reflect exactly what she wants to have happen with every piece of her estate.

It’s fine if she wants to give her boyfriend the house. It’s your mom’s will, and her estate, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants. She could also leave what’s called a life estate that says her boyfriend gets use of the home while he’s alive. Technically, in

this kind of situation the house would be left to you, but he would legally have use of it during his life. Upon his death, the home could then revert to you or your brother.
