More than 500 take polar plunge in Joliet Annual event at Leisure Lake benefits Illinois Special Olympics

Cold waters did not deter more than 500 participants from freezin’ for a reason.

Mostly sunny skies and 40-degree temperatures set the scene for people taking a dip into Leisure Lake Saturday, March 10 during Illinois Special Olympics’ seventh annual Joliet Polar Plunge.

The event, by design, aimed to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois programming, and the board decides how the funding is used.

“It’s just something that we embrace a great deal,” said Joe Pena, an ambassador for the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics Illinois. “We have school districts; we have businesses; we have municipalities; [we have] police departments. It’s just such a

wide variety.

More than $116,000 was raised through the Joliet Polar Plunge this time around, according to Special Olympics Illinois. The cutoff for post-event donations is 11 p.m.

April 27.

“It’s been such a successful venture for Special Olympics and the [Law Enforcement] Torch Run that our hope and expectation at the end of the day [is to raise] a million dollars on plunges, alone,” Pena said.

Wading through the icy waters was Oak Forest’s David Wahlberg.

When asked to describe his experience of taking the Joliet Polar Plunge, he said in one word: cold.

“There was a lot of mental preparation and a lot of arguing with myself to get in, but it’s not so bad,” he said.

The Polar Plunge did not serve as a first for Wahlberg.

“It was a good time,” he said. “I

have a lot of memories from the first one. I’m excited for next year.”

Wahlberg said taking the Joliet Polar Plunge was worth it.

“It helps participants [of Special Olympics Illinois] to get uniforms,” he said. “It’s a great organization. I’m happy to support it.”

Similar events have been held in recent weeks across the state.

“The excitement, the fun is all present,” Pena said. “I think one of the most significant things that I can say about this event is that it brings people together for a good time.”

Pena said Special Olympics Illinois plans to hold their polar plunges all throughout the year.

Melissa Levin, of Plainfield, was motivated to take a dip into the icy waters to support Special Olympics Illinois.

“It was awesome,” she said. “I love raising money for the kids. My friend, Jessica, she’s a coach, and she got me into the plunge.”

This time was Levin’s third occasion in which she’s decided to take the polar plunge. She said she

came ready to brave the cold waters this time around more so than in years past.

“The first year, [I prepared] not so much,” she said. “Last year, I did.”

Levin, joined by 26 other people, made up one of the many teams on hand for the Joliet Polar Plunge.

“We got more people on our team,” she said. “Last year, we had 10.”

Levin said the Joliet Polar Plunge’s popularity is easy to pin point.

“It’s because they get to help an organization with an activity to take part in,” she said.

Ryan Leifker, of Oak Lawn, said the moment he took to a dip into the icy waters is indescribable.

“I had to get a shirt and towel to not get as cold,” he said.

This year was Leifker’s first time participating in the event. He took the Joliet Polar Plunge alongside a 20-member team made up by Will County Sherriff’s Department staff.

Leifker said supporting Special Olympics Illinois is important to him.

“I work for a park district, and we have a special recreation program,” he said. “That’s why I jumped.”

Miriam Neugebauer, joined by two special education teachers from Plainfield School District 202, was on hand trying to keep warm after having taken a dip into the icy waters.

“I love raising money Special Olympics,” she said.

The cause, Neugebauer said, is very personal for her.

“I have students who participate in Special Olympics, and I do it for them,” she said, noting that is a school social worker. “We’ll do anything for students, even jumping into cold water and freezing our feet.”

Neugebauer said she and her team intend to take the polar plunge next year.

“We’re already talking about it,” she said. “We’re discussing what our costumes will be.”

Troy 30-C seek long-term plans Officials talk facility plan, strategic vision and belief

The Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C Board of Education was briefed on its longterm facility plan at a March 7 special session.

No action was taken during the meeting.

The plan was developed out of previous discussions held among a team of community members.

Superintendent Todd Koehl gave kudos to those who were involved in the process.

“They were melded together well and were not afraid to have good conversations,” he said. “It went really, so I was really pleased. It’s a really nice mix who had a lot to bring to the table at the right time.”

About five years ago, Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C purchased roughly 50 acres of land off of Essington Road and Glenwood Avenue in Joliet for an approximate $1.3 million.

“One of the key things, I think, that came out of the whole process was establishing our finalized direction on where we’re going to take pre-k and k because that is so paramount to what we decide about building changes and expansions,” Jerry Bene said.

Officials had discussed the prospect of separating its pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students into two buildings. The District has been in talks about expanding the two programs, as well as addressing facility needs and bidding out an award for the pre-purchase of a new parking lot.

“We have little hints that things are picking up in different areas,” Koehl said of the new growth.

“We’ve gotten some contact from a couple builders about building fees.”

The District receives impact fees as buildings are built, and the administration keeps track of this.

Board Member Sabrina Price wants to see the District develop a more formal enrollment forecast to help guide the Board of Education’s future decisions.

Cross agreed.

“I think that is something that is key that we need, especially in our developing neighborhoods, here, that are being built now,” she said.

“That would be, I think, a good indicator for us to see where our enrollment’s going to be at, based on where it is in the district.”

Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C already does some enrollment forecasting.

Some school districts will utilize a 10-year forecast to help guide its direction, as well as census data.

Koehl wants officials to consider extending the District’s boundaries to undeveloped properties to help direct future decisions with regard to its land purchase. “[It’s] a foundation,” Koehl said.

“It’s a place to begin.”

Moving forward, the administration intends to put out a request for proposals.

“I think the good news is that we’re in no hurry,” Koehl said. “We have a very rudimentary foundational plan, and these kind of conversations will go how they go as they fit. I think we’re maintaining our goal of really having a longterm plan being strategic in what we do. I think that’s the way we maintain our financial status.”

The Board of Education will consider extending the District’s boundaries to undeveloped properties at its March 21 regular meeting.

Also at the meeting, officials took time to review the District’s strategic vision and beliefs.

The document seeks to outline

Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C as a learning community that will be accountable and responsible for fulfilling its mission, which is to achieve excellence and conquer the challenges of the future. It goes on to highlight the District’s core beliefs and values.

Koehl wanted to get input from those on hand for the special meeting regarding what next steps to take with regard to the document and any revisions.

Several officials expressed a liking for the District’s strategic vision and beliefs.

“I like it,” Price said. “I’d love for us to, I mean, I don’t know how much it is in front of people, but I would love for it to be something that everybody is living and breathing all the time. I would also be curious about the strategic indicators, the things that we were looking for urgent gap areas to know how we feel like we’ve done in those areas, since this document was put together.”

Dawn Cross wants to see the District’s long-term plan included as part of the strategic plan.

“I do agree that this is a good document,” Koehl said. “It still fits where we are.”

Koehl directed the Board of Education to send further comments and suggestions to him following the meeting for potential addition or subtraction.

The District’s strategic vision and beliefs is to be reviewed again by the Board of Education at its April 18 regular meeting.

Political figures from Illinois: Recipients of Nobel Prize for Peace, leaders during wartime

Hull House. The nation’s first African American president — and first lady. All of these are due to Illinois’ bumper crop of political figures and politicians, who represent a diverse range of viewpoints and contributions throughout history.

Here, in alphabetical order, are some of the leaders who came from our state: JANE ADDAMS A social worker and a leader in the women’s suffrage movement, Addams was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She ran Hull House, a settlement house for poor immigrants in Chicago, and co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union. She also chaired a women’s conference for peace in the Netherlands in 1919 and worked unsuccessfully to get the United States to serve as a mediator between warring countries in World War I. She died in 1935 in Chicago. I-90 in Illinois is named after her.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON Clinton’s 2016 Democratic nomination for president culminated a lifetime of public service, including terms as U.S. secretary of state, U.S. senator and first lady, a job where she chaired a task force that devised a plan to provide universal health care for Americans. Raised in Park Ridge, she moved to Arkansas in 1975 and married Bill Clinton, who became the 42nd U.S. president. Her first run for president was in 2008, when she lost the nomination to fellow Illinoisan Barack Obama.

RICHARD J. DALEY Born into a working-class Irish family in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, Daley worked in the Union Stockyards to pay for law school. He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, then became Chicago’s 38th mayor with a 21-year tenure that ended with his death in 1976. Daley delivered key Democratic votes from Cook County in the 1960 presidential election of John F. Kennedy. He received national attention, and criticism, for authorizing the use of police force during the 1968 Democratic

convention in Chicago. His son, Richard M. Daley, followed him as Chicago mayor from 1989 to 2011.

EVERETT DIRKSEN A native of Pekin, Dirksen helped steer the U.S. through the turbulent 1960s.

As U.S. Senate minority leader, the Republican held a crucial role in passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. A World War I Army veteran, he was one of the Senate’s strongest supporters of the U.S. role in Vietnam. He died while in office in 1969 and is buried in Pekin. Did Dirksen say, “A million here, a million there, pretty soon, you’re talking real money”?

No written or recorded record has been found, reports The Dirksen Center in Pekin. While a few people emphatically recall him uttering the famous words, at least one remembers the senator denying it.

STEPHEN DOUGLAS A rising figure in Illinois’ early years, Douglas served in the Illinois House of Representatives and as Illinois secretary of state and Illinois Supreme Court associate justice, all by age 27. A few years later he was elected to the U.S. House, then the Senate and became one of the Democrats’ leaders. The chief nemesis and sparring partner of Abraham Lincoln during the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, Douglas was nicknamed “the little giant” because of his diminutive stature and political forcefulness.

Douglas (along with Lincoln) championed the Illinois Central Railroad, now part of the Canadian National Railway.

He designed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which brought the question of slavery into the national spotlight by allowing slaves in U.S. territories. He died of typhoid fever at age 48 in 1861 and is buried on Chicago’s South Side.

BETTY FORD Born Elizabeth Ann Bloomer in 1918 in Chicago, she moved with her family to Michigan before traveling at 18 to study dance in Vermont and New York.

She married and divorced, then married Gerald Ford as he was campaigning for the U.S. House of Representatives. He later became the 38th president of the United States. As first lady, Betty was

known for her frank and outspoken nature and irked some conservatives because of her support of socially liberal causes, including the Equal Rights Amendment and abortion access. Five years after leaving the White House, she founded the Betty Ford Center after recovering from alcohol and painkiller addiction. She died in 2011 at age 93; her husband died 74 days later.

ULYSSES S. GRANT Born in Ohio, Grant served in the Mexican-American War and moved at age 38 with his wife to Galena to join the family leather goods business. The Civil War began a year later and Grant led a regiment south. Eventually promoted to commanding general and reporting directly to President Abraham Lincoln, he helped lead the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy. As the 18th president from 1869 to 1877, he oversaw Reconstruction. He kept a home in Galena. He died in 1885 and is, with his wife Julia, buried in Grant’s Tomb at the General Grant National Memorial in New York.

JESSE JACKSON Jackson lived under Jim Crow laws during his youth in South Carolina, but later participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches for civil rights and went to work for Martin Luther King Jr., which led Jackson to Chicago to establish an office of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He attended the Chicago Theological Seminary and was ordained, then later received a master of divinity degree. Jackson was at the Memphis hotel when King was assassinated. As one of the most influential civil rights leaders in the nation, he founded Operation PUSH and organized the National Rainbow Coalition, now merged as Rainbow/PUSH. Jackson ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 1984 and 1988 and later assumed a role in negotiating internationally for release of U.S. hostages and prisoners abroad. President Bill Clinton awarded Jackson the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000.

Fast action prevented further tragedy at Izzy’s Bar Two quick thinking patrons disarm gunman after he killed bartender, shot another man

The shooting early Friday morning at Izzy’s Bar that left one person dead and another seriously injured could have been a lot worse if not for the fast reaction of two patrons.

Mike Cullick and Artis Henderson III, stopped at the Joliet bar after a pool league because Henderson wanted popcorn and ended up potentially saving multiple lives after Patrick K. Gleason of Crest Hill came into the bar armed.

Gleason shot and killed 52-yearold bartender Danny Rios, but the two friends made sure there were no more casualties.

Gleason was released from the hospital after being treated for injuries sustained when Henderson

and Cullick disarmed him. He is in Will County jail facing five charges of first-degree murder, three charges of attempted murder, one charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery.

“The bartender and all of us were talking and the bell went off for the door and instinctually, we all looked, he stopped in the hallway,” said Henderson, a former U.S. Marine. “We could only see him in the mirror and he had on a mask and he just stopped. He stood there for a good two minutes or more and the bartender went to see what was going on and the guy came around the corner and shot him. I guess that was the shotgun, because it was loud. I was the next one in line.

“I ran, he chased me and he pulled out another gun and I was behind a table and he was coming to shoot me and I wasn’t going

out that way. So, I reached for his arm and grabbed his gun hand and wrestled him to the ground, then Mike came over and tackled him and we were on the ground wrestling for the gun and the owner’s son came over and as the guy was trying to pull the gun back on us, the gun went off and it shot Thomas [Izquierdo] in the stomach. I got the gun from him and I called 9-1-1. It was a split second decision and split second action and it was just instinct. I guess if we wouldn’t have gone there, more people would have died.”

While the shooter was heading toward Henderson, Cullick went to protect his friend.

“Artis is my best friend and when the guy came in and killed Danny and then went for Artis, I wasn’t going to die like that and I wasn’t going to watch my best friend get killed in front of me. We didn’t think, we just reacted,” Cullick said.

Thomas, the second man shot, was the son of bar owner Alfonso Izquierdo Jr.

“My son is out of intensive care and will make a full recovery, although it will be a long road,” Izquierdo said. “Thank God there were those two guys. My son tried to get the gun away from him, but he was shot doing that, so it was the other two guys that really stopped him and the police told me if it wasn’t for those guys, it could have been a lot worse.

I thank my son for trying and I thank those other two guys for stopping [Gleason].”

While Cullick and Henderson have been called heroes, it is not what they consider themselves.

“People have come up and shook our hands and bought us a beer and I appreciate it, but people should focus on Danny’s family and Izzy,” Cullick said. “We are alive luckily enough and everyone needs to celebrate Danny’s life and be thankful Izzy’s son is alive.

Just pay it forward. Hold the door for someone or whatever. Life is too short not to be nice to people.

You should treat everyone like you want them to treat you. I wouldn’t

say I am a hero - I was just someone who was there during a bad situation.”

Izquierdo said the focus now is on Rios and keeping his memory alive.

“All the focus is about Danny now,” Izquierdo said. “Danny was one of my best friends and was a loyal employee and he will be missed at the bar, in my heart and in life. I can’t say enough about Danny Rios.”

Rios is remembered by all as a fun-loving guy who would do anything to help someone else.

“Our family was so close to him we always called him our uncle growing up,” said family friend Paula Aukland. “He used to watch us when we were kids and we had holiday dinners together. He helped me get the interview for my job when I needed it and that was something he didn’t have to do. He was just the best guy.”

SEASON Joliet Central falls in sectional semifinal after a season that many thought improbable

When the basketball season ended a year ago, everyone expected the successful run Joliet Central had was over – after all, the Steelmen lost several key seniors, so the team had to go through a rebuild, right?

Not exactly.

This year’s group, while it didn’t have the playing time last season, the players did have the ability to practice against last year’s group.

“These kids took advantage of practice last year,” said Central coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr. “They learned how to compete.

They played against some great players last year and practices were competitive. They were ready mentally and when the games started, there were some ups and downs because some of them hadn’t played as much. But, once they knew their identity as far as playing defense and we knew it was going to be tough to rebound because we were not real big, then it took off. I am very proud of them. I can’t say enough about how they tried to do what I asked them to do and tried to get better fundamentally.”

The players believed they would be able to come out and have success this season.

“Coming into this year, everyone thought we lost it,” said Cen-

tral senior Ryan Saunders. “Little did they know the starters were in the game and on the bench last year watching how we need to play.”

The season came to an end this year in the semifinal of the IHSA Class 4A Romeoville Sectional when the Steelmen (23-6) lost to Bolingbrook 94-91 in a doubleovertime thriller that saw Central open the game on a 10-2 run and have chances to win at the end of both regulation and the initial overtime.

“Both teams were battling. We knew we had to stay humble and stay correct and come out and play Joliet Central basketball,” Saunders said. “We played our best, the score just didn’t end up in our favor. We are not upset with how we played. We knew we left everything out there on the floor.

“We lost this game on the scoreboard, we did everything we could do.”

Saunders paced the Steelmen with 33 points, while fellow senior Don Joachim scored 26 points.

With players like Saunders, Joachim and Southwest Prairie Conference Player of the Year Cameron Blackmon graduating, Central will be right back in the same situation as it was this year “That is the way it will operate,” Thompson said. “If they learned from practice and if they were put to the test and if they work hard, we will go out and compete.”

Saints bowling teams advance The University of St. Francis women’s and men’s bowling teams placed first and second respectively at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Smyrna Sectional.

With the results, both teams clinch a spot in next month’s USBC Intercollegiate Team National Championships.

On the women’s side, the Saints rolled a 225 in their first game of the tournament and nearly led wire-to-wire to take their second sectional title in program history.

USF led by at least 85 pins after each of the four 16-game blocks and totaled 12,605 pins over the two days. USF was the second-seeded team in the field and is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation according to CollegeBowling.com’s Team Ranking System.

The USF men’s bowling team will make its first appearance at USBC ITC nationals after a second-place finish this weekend. The Saints came in as the No. 20 ranked team in the nation and the fifth-seeded team in the sectional, but finished the first 16-game block with a 253 game that propelled them into second place. St. Francis held third-place positions after the second and third blocks before jumping into second in the final 16 games.

Prior to competing at the USBC Intercollegiate Team National Championships April 1921, the Saints will bowl at the NAIA Invitational Tournament March 23-25 at Plaza Bowl in Highland, Indiana.

The USF women are defending NAIA Invitational champions.

Local weightlifter headed to S. Africa

For most men, the height of their athletic prowess comes in their late teens to mid 20s.

A running back is old at 25, a baseball player is looking at retirement by 35 and even a golfer is way down the money list by 40.

Plainfield resident Kevin Farley, however, is not most men.

Farley has been competing as a powerlifter since 1987, but his career really amped up after his 40th birthday.

“I specialize in the bench press because I am just better at it than most people,” Farley said. “ I have been competing for 31 years and I am pretty well known in the powerlifting circles as a coach. I have coached the international teams in the open and masters bench press championships about a dozen times. I started doing that before I was 40 because I won some national titles, but I wasn’t good enough to lift at the World Championships when I was in my 20s and 30s in the International Powerlifting Federation. When I

turned 40 a lot of people started to retire. I am as strong right now as I was 10 years ago - the rest of my competition is not.”

Farley, 51, will represent the United States at the International Powerlifting Federation World Bench Press Championships in South Africa April 23-29.

His qualifying lift at the USAPL National Championships in September 491 pounds.

“When I started, I lifted in the 181-pound class and now I lift in the 231-pound class,” he said.

Farley competes in a class known as equipped lifting, where he competes with a bench press shirt.

“I compete in the class using a bench press shirt, which is essentially a tight shirt that gives you performance enhancement.

I would compare it to the bikes that the riders used in the Tour de France 20 years ago were heavier than today, or the pole that a pole vaulter uses today is better than it was.

“So, this is a performance enhancing garment and it’s called equipped lifting and that is part of my training.”

That is the only enhancements Farley is allowed as he said the IPF uses the same drug testing as the Olympics and are extremely strict on the use of any PEDs. Being drug free is not the only rule in competition. Farley explained that in competition, the bench press is different than the guy you see at the gym or the NFL hopefuls bouncing weights off their chest at the scouting combine.

“The rules are very exact. In a competition, you have to take the bar out of the rack and hold it at arm’s length until you get a start signal and your feet have to be flat on the floor, your rear end and head have to be touching the bench and your arms have to be locked and they check that before they tell you to start,” Farley said. “Then you have to being the bar to your chest and

pause it until you get a press signal. Then you have to press it to arm’s length and hold it until you get a rack signal. While you press it, you can’t lift anything off the bench and you can’t lift one arm faster than the other.”

When Farley heads to South Africa, he will not only compete, but have a chance to catch up with friends from all over the globe.

“When I was coaching we went to seven or eight different countries and I competed in Germany in 2007 and New Zealand in 2009,” he said. “So, I have traveled all over the world in powerlifting. This will be the first time I have been to South Africa.

“You will see some of the same people at all of these, so I have friends from Japan and New Zealand and the UK and Finland – so I know people all over the world because of this sport.”

Student loan is still debt; pay it DEAR DAVE, I have $100,000 in student loan debt. Since the amount is so large, is there a special place in your Baby Steps plan for it?

JULIE DEAR JULIE, The fact that it’s a large amount of student loan debt doesn’t change anything. Baby Step 2 is where you pay off all debt except for your home.

I hope you have a nice, large income with which to fight that big, nasty pile of student loan debt. Believe it or not, I’ve seen even worse situations. I’ve talked to people who went $200,000 into debt for a fouryear degree in a field where they’ll make $50,000. That kind of thinking and behavior is ridiculous, but it’s out there.

Whatever you do, don’t let this student loan debt hang around for years and years. You’ve got to get focused and intense about getting control of your money. That means living on a strict, basics-only monthly budget. After that, start throwing every nickel and dime you can scrape together and save toward those student loans as fast as possible.

Your income is your largest wealth-building tool, Julie. You can’t save, and plan for the future, when all your money is flying out the door to pay back debt!

DEAR DAVE, I have a credit card that I haven’t made a payment on in almost two years. The debt has been sold a couple of times, and now a collector is saying I owe $1,200. The original amount was $500. I’d like to work something out, but I can’t afford $1,200. What should I do?

LUANNE DEAR LUANNE, They’re asking for $1,200 because they’ve added things like interest and late fees. They want to make as much money as possible on an old

debt they bought for pennies on the dollar.

If you can afford $500 right now, ask if they’ll accept a one-time payment to settle the account. Get it in writing if they accept the offer, and don’t give them a penny until after you get a copy of the written agreement. Once you have the agreement in hand, send them a money order or cashier’s check for $500. Do not, under any circumstances, give them electronic access to your bank accounts.

You waited too long to take of your obligation, Luanne. That made things more difficult and more stressful than necessary. I’m glad you decided to do the right thing, and clean up your mess, though.

Better late than never!
