Troy Township collecting for care packages Township Supervisor Joseph D. Baltz is proud to announce that Troy Township will be collecting items for “Operation Care Package” as a way to honor former Troy Township Trustee Donald D. Walden and his dedication to all veterans.

Operation Care Package’s goal is to support U.S. servicmen through care packages and letters of encouragement.

The collection continues through the second week in December. Donations may be dropped off at Troy Township, 25448 Seil Rd in Shorewood from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mon. – Fri. Below are a list of some items that are on the wish list: HYGIENE ITEMS: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, handiwipes, eye drops, foot powder, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, travel size shampoo

and conditioners, deodorant, and chapstick.

FOOD ITEMS: Canned soup, ravioli, spaghettios or chili, canned or packaged tuna, salmon, or chicken, breakfast bars, granola bars, power bars, fruit snacks, individual packaged cookies, cheese or peanut butter snack crackers, canned or dried fruit, powdered drink mixes, trail mix, nuts, sunflower seeds, slim jims, beef jerky, coffee, Kool-Aid singles or similar product, microwave instant oatmeal or easymac, protein bars and take along snacks.

Another way you can help is by donating stamps (could be one or more) that will be used to send a card or letter to an injured serviceperson or to a deployed soldier.

Operation Care Package has been mailing out care packages to our deployed and wounded military since 2003 and mail out appr.

150-200 packages every week, not only for the holidays. Everything they send is donated.

Winner of the Drama Desk and Tony Awards for Best Play, this

story is based on the true life of Englishman John Merrick. Abandoned by his mother at age 3 in the late 1800s, Merrick was deformed and forced to earn a living as the freak show attraction dubbed “The Elephant Man.” Eventually rescued by a successful doctor, Merrick is revealed to be highly intelligent and surprisingly becomes the toast of London society. However, he soon realizes his dream of being just like everyone else can never be achieved.

The production is directed by Clay Kirkland, scenic design by Julie Giampaolo and lighting design by Nicki Blowers. The production is stage managed by Eric

Marshall of Plainfield and is assisted by Kelly Beggs of Plainfield.

What struck me the most from their review was when they made reference to the passion that was exhibited on stage. Both of the respondents said that the

students not only performed the play well, they performed from the heart.

This was meaningful to me because at their young age, with difficult material, they were able to demonstrate what is at the core of humanity.

Nibbling away at the Affordable Care Act

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market

As annual enrollment for Obamacare insurance approaches on November 1, the law itself and the people who have come to depend on it for health coverage are both facing an uncertain future.

President Trump’s recent executive actions affect the complicated insurance mechanics of the Affordable Care Act, and they haven’t been well explained in the news media. This column will explain how those changes affect you.

Congress has tried but has not been able to “repeal and replace” the law that has brought health insurance to some 10 million Americans who buy insurance on the state shopping exchanges and about 10 million more who gained access through Medicaid expansion.

The failure of Congress to pass the “repeal and replace” legislation did not mean, though, that the law would remain intact.

In mid-October President Trump’s executive action hollowed out a big chunk of the ACA, throwing insurance marketplaces into a tizzy and possibly resulting in higher prices and less coverage for many. In the end, the president’s actions may succeed in gutting the law that has divided so many Americans.

To understand this, let’s take a step back. Legislators who wrote the law knew that a big reason people did not buy health insurance was cost. Most middle class families without employer coverage struggled to pay the premiums in the so-called individual market where they had to shop. Those at the bottom of the income ladder either qualified for Medicaid or did without insurance. About 44 million Americans did not have insurance when the law took effect four years ago.

The ACA tried to make it easier to buy coverage, and Congress did that in

It required insurers to cover all people - sick or well - who applied for coverage in the individual market and offered two kinds of subsidies to help those with lower incomes.

One comes in the form of tax credits the government advances to shoppers who buy Obamacare - compliant policies that meet certain rules and regulations, such as offering 10 essential benefits. Prescription drug coverage is one.

Those subsidies are based on a family’s income and phase out when a family’s income exceeds 400 percent of the federal poverty level or about $98,000 for a family of four and $48,000 for a single person. People with lower incomes receive the largest subsidies.

Those tax credit subsidies are not affected by Trump’s order.

The other subsidy is called a costsharing subsidy, sometimes referred to as a CSR and aimed at Americans whose incomes are at or below 250 percent of poverty, about $62,000 for a family of four and $30,000 for an individual. They reduce the amount of out-of-pocket spending for people who get them. Those who qualify pay less for the coinsurance, deductibles and copayments a policy may require.

These are the subsidies on the chopping block. The president said the government will not continue funding

them which means the government simply will not pay insurance companies for reducing the out-of-pocket costs to policyholders. Policyholders will still get the subsidies unless Congress changes the law. Insurers will have to swallow the losses, at least for now.

If you get those subsidies, you’re not off the hook, though. Insurance companies anticipated that the president would axe the subsidies and they increased their premiums for most or all Obamacare policies, including the silver plans, the ones people must buy to receive the extra help with cost sharing.

The Congressional Budget Office just projected that premiums before the tax credits are applied would increase on average by about 20 percent.

In some states average rate increases have been much higher.

So who will be hurt the most by the Trump administration’s latest move which some experts argue undermines the stability of the health law?

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market.

People with incomes under 400 percent of poverty will still receive their tax credits, which will reduce their higher premiums, and they will continue to get their CSRs. Those in the individual market who have higher incomes and receive no tax credits to lower their premiums will feel the most pain. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 44 percent of buyers in the Obamacare market did not qualify for tax credits.

That’s almost 7 million people.

“Ironically, it is these unsubsidized folks who have complained the loudest about Obamacare’s big premiums and deductibles,” says Washington D.C. insurance consultant Robert Laszewski. “They will now have even more to complain about.”

The administration wants to let them buy cheaper policies that cover far less than Obamacare insurance. White announces repaired, digitized World War I Illinois National Guard online Marks 100th anniversary World War I Secretary of State and State Archivist Jesse White today announced that in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of America’s participation in World War I, the Illinois State Archives has repaired and digitized 57 maps used by the Illinois National Guard during the war.

The maps may be viewed by the public in the Illinois Digital Archives found here: h t t p : / / w w w. i d a i l l i n o i s. org/cdm/search/collection/ p16614coll33/page/1 “More than 350,000 Illinois residents served in the American military during World War I and more than 5,000 died,” said White. “It is important that we as a state take the time to remember their sacrifices and honor their efforts.”

The State Archives has military topographical maps that show activities in France during World War I. These maps show terrain exercises, the enemy order of battle and the locations of trenches, land mines, railroads, supply dumps and the front lines. Also included with this group of materials is a rare German poster showing the locations of ships sunk by German submarines in British waters.

White, who served in the U.S. Army and the Illinois National Guard and Reserve, said the maps show the importance of Illinois’ contribution to the war effort.

These sets of maps feature the 33rd division of the Illinois National Guard, which was the only distinctly Illinois division that saw active service in France during the war. The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917 and, unlike previous wars, most soldiers did not serve in units specific to their home states.

Naperville North won the title with 87 pointsfor their second consecutive title. Plainfield North 22nd and Lockoprt was 23rd.

Emily Shelton, a senior, led Minooka with a third place overall finish. It was the second year in a row that Shelton had finished in the third spot and became Minooka’s third three time all-state performer. She covered the three mile course in 16:29.

Katelyn Hart, the sophomore from Glenbard West, won her second individual title in as many years, running 16:21.

Shelton, who was all smiles after the race, talked about her

final race for the Indians.

“This is definitely a great way to finish my cross country season and career in high school,” Shelton said. “It hasn’t hit me yet that this is the end and I sort of wish it wasn’t, I felt so good today. The first two miles there was a big pack and I thought this was going to be a crazy finish, but I made a move because of the way I felt.”

Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson was also impressed with Shelton’s performance and his team’s finish.

“It was a perfect way to end her cross country career,” Gummerson said. “She ran a perfect race on the biggest stage under not the best of conditions. I’m extremely happy because she is such a great person, athlete and competitor. It was the best race of her career.

“These kids in this program believe they should be here, it’s goes back to all the teams we have had here in the past. They believe in the system and compete well, I’m so proud of each and every one of them.”

Junior Vivian Van Eck finished 26th for the Indians, one spot out of gaining all-state honors, which go to the top 25. Van Eck placed 23rd as a sophomore.

“The race was really fast, but I really felt like myself again and did the best I could,” Van Eck said, who has battled a little knee soreness lately. “We placed well as a team and that is important.”

Julia Dames finished 49th (17:48), Katelyn Gall 93rd ( 18:08) and Angelica Leal 115th (18:18) to round out the scoring for Minooka.

Plainfield North had Juliana Stogsdill finish 35th (17:39) and Megan Patton right behind in 37th (17:39). It was the second year in a row that the Tigers have qualified as a team and they improved on last year’s 24th place performance.

“I’m happy with the race and how I felt especially after sectionals,” Stogsdill, a junior, said. “It was a little sloppy out there and I wanted to make allstate, but I’m proud of the race and that our team improved our

team place over last year.”

Patton was also pleased with her ending race.

“I’m so happy to end my high school career this way,” Patton said. “It was the best I felt all season and this is the place to do it. I want to thank everyone for the support they have given this team all season long. “ The Porters were lead by Alexandra Skibicki in 130th (18:26) and only had a split of ten seconds among their top five, but they were just to far back in the field to finish any higher in the team standings.

The Porters, who have qualified every year since 2009, return everyone from this year’s squad.

Freshman Alyssa Grigg from Plainfield South finished 53rd in 17:50.

On the boys side Plainfield North senior Omar Paramo gained all-state accoldes. He negotiated the three mile course in 14:51 and placed 23rd. The top 25 receive all-state accolades.

Paramo steadily moved up

through out the race and was the top finisher from the area in class 3A. After two miles, Paramo was in 41st place and passed 18 runners in the last mile.

In the team race Downers Grove North easily won with 73 points for the title, with Lockport finishing 25th.

The Porters were led by Marc Schelli in 133rd (15:37).

“We are a very young team and you never know how they are going to react in this situation,” Porter coach Tom Razo said. “We haven’t been here for awhile, so this is all new to them.

You have to get the experience of being here and knowing what goes on. It’s hard for a team to come here after not being here and run well. These kids will learn and get better because of this experience.”

Other area individuals in 3A were Bolingbrook’s sophomore Tyler Cushing in 35th (14:57), Plainfield South’s Christian Knowlton in 55th (15:09) and Stephen Merriweather finishing 63rd (15:13). Minooka’s Jason Hoffman placed 113th (15:31).

“I used what God gave me,” Wentworth said of the size advantage he had over the defensive backs. “Catching it was the hard part. It kind of got in the lights and I bobbled it – but once I caught it, I was getting the end zone, no matter if it was from three yards or 99 yards.”

Wentworth said the play has been there all season and he even thought about it recently when he saw University of Wisconsin lineman Michael Dieter score on the same play against Illinois.

“I just saw it on social media and thought, we could be running that play,” Wentworth said.

“The game was on the line and we had to use everything that was in the arsenal. Everything was working really well for us tonight. We have had it in the playbook – coach Belskis is always throwing in crazy things, that guy is awesome. When I caught it, I just had to get in for the team. Everyone was doing their part, I just had to do mine.

I was prepared to do whatever they needed.”

The game was one big play after another for the Indians, who, after falling behind 7-0 with 6:44 to play in the first quarter, had Max Christiano line up at quarterback in a wildcat formation, keep the ball and go up the middle for 53 yards to set up a 5-yard score from Connor Etzkorn.

“Coming out, we talked about scoring on the first drive and coach gave me a great opportunity, the line made great blocks and I was able to make a play,” Christiano said.

After trading punches all game, it was Christiano who got the call again when the team needed it.

After building a 26-14 lead with 8:00 to play in the third quarter, Minooka watched Barrington and quarterback Ray

Niro take back the momentum and the lead, going ahead 34-26 with 5:00 left in the game.

Minooka drove the ball down the field and when the Indians reached the 13-yard line, it was a slant from Gessner (10-for-15, 297 yards, 2 TD) to Christiano (2 catches, 31 yards, TD; 3 carries 58 yards) for the score.

“Whatever this team needs or these coaches ask me to do, I will. I don’t care about my numbers, I just want to win games and I am having fun doing it,” said Christiano, who is one of the Indians who play both sides of the ball. “We condition hard and just get ready to play both ways. We really don’t think about it because it’s what we do.”

The touchdown cut the Barrington lead to 34-32 and Minooka pulled out another play for the game-tying 2-point conversion – a pass from Gessner to defensive lineman Adrian Paige, who motions out of a power look in the backfield and slips into the end zone.

It was the same play the Indians used to beat Plainfield North – but Barrington didn’t know that.

“They didn’t have that on film,” McCombs said. “That was not one of the tapes they asked for (in the customary playoff film exchange). That is why we used it.”

Minooka was led on the ground by Owen Kapple, who tallied 138 yards on 14 carries.

The Indians will now face the winner of Saturday’s match-up between No. 26 Edwardsville and No. 23 Palatine.

Win or lose, the Players know they have begun to build a new culture surrounding Minooka football.

“Football is a great game and everyone talks about how great football coaches are coaching football, but these guys teach us life lessons. At the end of the day, the scoreboard doesn’t really mean anything. I don’t care if we win 60-0 and my guys are acting like fools, I am going to be upset because that is what the coaches instilled in us,” Wentworth said. “It is a whole different culture here now than it was three or four years ago. We are an hour and a half away and we had three fan busses plus everyone that drove.

“They can do whatever they want on a Friday night, but they are here supporting us and from the bottom of my heart, I have to thank them.”
