Shorewood officials to allow video gaming at various locations

Shorewood is looking to allow video gaming at various locations.

In a 4-2 decision, a motion was passed at a Feb. 13 regular meeting of the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees to waive the second read and amend municipal codes for video gaming. Trustees Anthony Luciano and Steve Brockman were the dissenting votes.

The measure, as approved, is meant to help offset the effect of Village rules that require Shorewood’s bars and taverns to close at 2 a.m. instead of 3 a.m.

The Village has been examining its code of ordinances over the last 10 months. A group of local establishment owners had approached the Village regarding the initiative, with the goal of offsetting the effect of the Village’s new closing times for bars and taverns.

Bedrocks owner Ken Groh said 2017 was a difficult year for his establishment and others impacted by the Village’s decision, requiring them to close one hour earlier.

“The ordinance change affected all of our businesses and some more greatly,” he said. “Some of us were down 30 percent or more last year after that ordinance change with the hour change. Video gaming is a way for our small businesses to try to regain some of that lost revenue.”

The community’s response to the new code has been received primarily well, Trustee Anthony Luciano said. Some concerns were raised at the Citizens Advisory level called into question what places will be allowed to have the video gaming licenses and the closing times.

With Village Board action, establishments are required to utilize a barrier to help restrict video gaming access to anyone who is underage. The code also stipulates that the transfer of licenses is prohibited, sets forth the conditions for suspension and revocation, prohibits flashing/fluorescent signage used for promotional pur-

poses, and disqualifies truck stops and fuel centers from having video gaming.

Video gaming licenses will be available not only to Shorewood’s bars and taverns, but also its restaurants with existing liquor licenses.

The Village has not determined how many video gaming licenses are to be available, thereby outlining a cap limit.

“The thought was in talking with [Community Development Director] Karen [James] and [Village Administrator] Roger [Barrowman], we’d just limit it to alcohol licenses at this time,” Village Attorney Dave Silverman said. “You could change that in the future, if you wanted to.

It’s kind of hard to say, you know, it’d one license, eight licenses, or five licenses until we know what the interest in the community in these businesses will be.”

Illinois has embraced its role as the Land of Lincoln

BY KATE SCHOTT THE STATE JOURNALREGISTER Abraham Lincoln may not have been born in Illinois but he clearly is among the state’s favorite sons.

Lincoln came into the world on Feb. 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky, but eventually spent several decades living in Illinois, and departed for the presidency as a resident of Springfield. He was a shopkeeper, postmaster, lawyer, and state and federal legislator before being elected president in 1860.

He served as the nation’s 16th president from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. The bullet fired by John Wilkes Booth prematurely took one of the nation’s greatest presidents from its citizens, but could not diminish his accomplishments -- notably the abolishment of slavery -- that have defined his legacy.

Planting roots in Illinois Lincoln had a humble beginning.

The second child and first son to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, he was born in a one-room log cabin. He did not have the benefit of consistent formal schooling, as he often worked to help support his family during his childhood in Kentucky and then Indiana.

The family moved to Illinois in 1830 and Lincoln wound up in New Salem working as postmaster and shopkeeper. He became involved in local politics, winning a seat in the state legislature in 1834. He taught himself law and passed the bar in 1836; in 1846 he won a seat to the U.S. House of Representatives.

He married Mary Todd in November 1842 and they had four sons, although only the eldest, Robert Todd, survived into adulthood. The Greek Revival house the family lived in for 17 years still sits in Springfield today, with its homestead a popular place for tourists to visit when they come to the state’s capital.

Lincoln’s biggest accomplishment was probably the abolishment of slavery, an issue he began speaking out against as a young adult. His first state-

ment on the issue is said to have been March 3, 1837, when he said “the institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy” during a speech at the state legislature when it was in Vandalia.

It was an issue he would repeatedly discuss during his political career: When accepting the Republican nomination in June 1858 during a convention in Springfield to be the party’s candidate for U.S. Senate, Lincoln gave his “A house divided against itself cannot stand” speech.

And it was one of the main issues discussed during his failed bid for the Senate, as during the 1858 debates with Stephen A. Douglas the future president forcely spoke out against slavery. While he lost the race for Senate that year, those seven debates gave him the national prominence he needed to win the presidency.

The presidency Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States in November 1860 and took office the following March. Much of Lincoln’s time as president was spent on the issue of slavery, as the divide between the North and South as to whether it should be allowed led to the Civil War starting a month after he took office.

It was during the war that his Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in Confederate states, went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863. And it was on one of the bloodiest battlefields of the Civil War that Lincoln delivered perhaps the most important speech in American history. The Gettysburg Address, given Nov. 19, 1863, is known for Lincoln’s succinct summary of the purpose of the United States: That the country was “conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” and that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Lincoln was elected to a second term as the war raged on, but his death came shortly after his second inauguration and just as the Civil War was coming to end. He was shot April 14, 1865, while watching “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. It was Good Friday, just five days after

the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Booth, a sympathizer with the Confederacy, shot the president pointblank in the back of his head.

News of Lincoln’s death arrived in Springfield via telegraph at 3 a.m. April 15, 1865, to the Daily State Journal’s newsroom. “The president was shot in a theater tonight and is probably mortally wounded,” read the dispatch.

Moments later another followed: “The president is not expected to live through the night. ... Secretary (of State William) Seward was also assassinated.

No arteries were cut. Particulars soon.”

The second, of course, was inaccurate about Seward’s fate, but the news about Lincoln was correct. Additional dispatches painted the chaos inside Ford’s Theater, including the sound of a pistol, a man waving a dagger leaping from the president’s box, the screams of Mrs. Lincoln, and finally, the heartbreaking confirmation that the 16th president of the United States had died.

A train carried the president’s body throughout the country for nearly two weeks, allowing citizens to grieve their loss. On May 3, crowds descended upon Springfield as the train carrying Lincoln pulled into town for the president’s burial.

“Today we lay him reverently to rest amid the scenes he loved so well,” the Journal said the next day. “Millions will drop a tear to his memory, and future generations will make a pilgrimage to his tomb. Peace to his ashes.”

Pilgrimages continue to the 16th president’s tomb to this day, with many visitors rubbing the nose of the bronze head of Lincoln that sits in front of the entrance to the tomb. The words uttered by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton upon Lincoln’s passing have indeed come true: “Now he belongs to the ages.”

CHAMPS JCA’s Hamiti, Lockport’s Molton win state championships

CHAMPAIGN — Joliet Catholic freshman DJ Hamiti may be a soft-spoken young man, but his wrestling style speaks loudly.

Hamiti was thoroughly dominant in his run to the 106-pound Class 2A state championship at State Farm Center in Champaign.

Hamiti (42-4) had two pins and two technical falls to win the title. He secured a technical fall on Washington freshman Abraham Hinrichsen in 5:10 in the finals.

“It means a lot,” Hamiti said.

“I came in to tell everybody that I was going to win my weight class, and I think I showed that.”

Hamiti’s title is the first for the Hilltoppers since 1967.

“DJ has done that all year for us, he goes out there and dominates and finishes the match ahead of time, which is fantastic,” JCA coach Ryan Cumbee said. “It takes a lot of nerves off

the coaches, but I think he also likes to get out there and get after it. He wants to dominate. He’s dominated the majority of his matches this year.”

Cumbee, a former Providence state champion and coach at Marmion, has a history with Hamiti.

He coached Hamiti at his Celtic Elite Wrestling Club last year.

Hamiti decided to join Cumbee when he took his position alongside Cory McLaughlin as the Hilltoppers’ coaches this year.

“I knew that was going to be a good jump start for our program to get going,” Cumbee said. “(Hamiti’s title) has been a long time coming. I think it’s going to set the new standard of expectations.”

Fellow freshman Jack Finnegan (35-9) also earned a medal for JCA, the first time the Hilltoppers had two state medalists since 1966. Finnegan took fifth at 113 pounds.

Taking fifth was a fantastic start for him.”

Hamiti feels the excitement for the program not only building in the room, but in the school in general.

“It’s going to be really exciting with the kids we have in the room,” Hamiti said. “I think we can build more on the wrestling program, not just football and baseball.”

Lockport junior Anthony Molton (46-7) had one of the toughest roads to get to the Class

3A 120-pound finals, and one of the wildest state title wins of the weekend.

Molton posted an 11-2 major decision over two-time defending state champion Joey Melendez of Montini in the semifinals.

Awaiting him there was 2016 state champ Travis Ford-Melton of Marian Catholic.

Molton had to come back from an early deficit to force overtime.

In the second overtime, FordMelton conceded an escape point to start the period neutral.

The tactic backfired, however, as Molton took him down with 0:15 left to post a 7-4 win.

“I knew I needed to lay it on thick, and boom, I laid it on thick,” Molton said. “(Surrender-

ing the escape point) fired me up a lot. It didn’t change my approach. I knew I just had to push forward and do what I needed to do. I knew I needed to go as hard as I could since this is the finals, may as well put everything on the mat.”

Matt Ramos (113) placed third for the Porters, while Zach Reese (152) took fourth.

Joliet West senior Jonathan Pullen placed fourth at 170 pounds in Class 3A. “It’s been a really good season,” Pullen said. “Obviously, it didn’t end the way I wanted it to with a loss, but honestly, this is by far more than I expected at the beginning of the year. I’m very proud of my accomplishments.”

Moody leads USF at CCIW championships Jenna Moody (Joliet, Ill./ Plainfield Central) was named the Female Track Athlete of the Meet as the Saints placed third at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Moody won four out of the five events she competed in, taking top honors in the 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and 1,600-meter relay. She posted NAIA qualifying times in all four races and also placed second in the long jump.

The Saints finished with 171 points, just 15 back of second place Olivet Nazarene. St. Ambrose won the team title with 248.5 points.

After winning two events on Friday, the Saints started Saturday’s action with a dominant performance in the mile run.

Ashlee Knott (Washington, Ill./ Washington) and Taylor Conroy (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) were the top two finishers in the event and posted “A” and “B” NAIA qualifying standards respectively. Catherine Crosson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and Bre Rodriguez (Dwight, Ill./Dwight) also finished inside the top six.

Knott added another win and qualifying standard in the 3,000-meter race, while Crosson placed second and Conroy came in seventh.

Moody capped her meet by teaming with Sabrina Baftiri (Morris, Ill./Morris), Eva Bruno (Marseilles, Ill./Seneca) and Celina Mayforth (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) to win the 1,600-meter relay with an “A” qualifying standard.

Bruno and Baftiri added second and fourth-place finishes respectively in the 600-meter run.

The Saints will send representatives in 11 events to the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, which will take place March 1-3 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

BASEBALL The University of St. Francis baseball team split a pair of 4-3 contests against Cumberland University.

The Saints (2-2) won game one

with a three-run 10th-inning rally before dropping game two in the regulation seven innings.

USF 4, Cumberland 3 (10 innings) The Saints rallied for three runs in the top of the 10th inning and held on to open up the series with a 4-3 win.

The teams traded solo home runs in the second inning. Travis Schoonover (Braidwood, Ill./ Reed-Custer) provided a long ball to right field for the Saints.

Cumberland’s Mykel Gordon answered in the bottom of the inning.

That run was the only one that USF starter Kevin Mampe (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) allowed in seven solid innings (4 H, 7 K).

The score remained tied until the 10th inning. In the top half of the frame, Anthony Faron (New Lenox, Ill./St. Rita) started the rally with a one-out walk and a CU error put two in scoring position. Nick Dabrowski (Plainfield, Ill./Oswego East) followed with a double that scored Faron’s pinch runner Aaron Michalak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), but Shawn Harper (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic)was thrown out at third on the play.

Another error kept the inning alive until John Peterson (Palos Heights, Ill./St. Laurence) singled home a pair to put USF up 4-1.

In the bottom of the inning, a two-run homer pulled the Phoenix within one, but Angel Sandoval (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) was able to force a pop out to finish off the win.

Faron posted the only multihit game for the Saints, while Dabrowski, Peterson and Schoonover all totaled RBIs. Sandoval took the win in relief while allowing just three hits in three innings.

Cumberland’s Thomas Galart tossed nine innings of one-run ball, while Carlos Moseley added a home run and a double.

Cumberland 4, USF 3 The Saints came back from a two-run deficit but dropped game two of the doubleheader 4-3.

Cumberland put itself on the board with a two-run home run in the second inning. USF answered when Pat Michalak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) pulled a solo shot down the right-field line.

Trailing by two again in the top of the sixth, the Saints rallied to tie the game. P. Michalak led off the inning with a walk and Faron doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. The next batter, Antonio Gutierrez (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), drilled a two-run double to right.

The Phoenix recorded a pair of hits in the seventh to take the walk-off win.

USF’s Michael Quiram (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic) tossed six innings and struck out four. Six different Saints recorded hits.

Kyle Blackwell homered twice and provided the game-winning hit for CU.

TENNIS Ian Millan Vetokhin (Burriana, Spain) earned a victory at No. 2 singles as the University of St. Francis men’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Eastern Illinois.

Millan Vetokhin defeated Logan Charbonneau 6-4, 6-4 to give the Saints (3-2) their first individual (non-default) win against an NCAA Division I opponent since 2016.

All three doubles matches counted for one point per NCAA Division I rules. EIU (2-7) took the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Mike Hasler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and David Kohler (Shorewood, Ill./ Minooka) pushed their opponents at No. 3 doubles before falling 6-3.

Millan Vetokhin accounted for the lone USF point in singles play. Avilash Mishra (Bhubaneswar, India) and Miguel Rayos del Sol (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) both took their opponents deep into their respective second sets before EIU came away victorious.

The Saints will play five matches during their spring break trip to Orlando, Florida (March 4-8).

Rent-to-own options aren’t good deals DEAR DAVE, Is it okay to buy something using a rent-to-own plan?

JOSH DEAR JOSH, I advise against rent-to-own deals. Rent-to-own places get people in the door with promises of low monthly or weekly payments.

But when it comes to rent-to-own furniture, washer and dryer sets, and that kind of thing, you’ll end up paying much, much more than if you saved up and bought item outright. The amount you’ll pay out of pocket is even more ridiculous if you compare it to buying the same item, slightly used, somewhere else.

I don’t recommend rent-to-own scenarios when it comes to buying a home, either. Most of those offerings are listed at full retail price

option to buy. That’s different than rent-to-own, because in a rent-toown situation you’ve committed to purchase. On a lease with an option to buy deal, you have the right to purchase, but not the obligation.

Josh, most of the people who use rent-to-own deals are not in good financial shape. They’re deeply in debt, and they have no money.

Rent-to-own ensures they’ll stay there.

—DAVE and then some. Plus, the contracts are tilted toward the seller’s side of the equation. And very few people who sign a rent-to-own home deal follow through and become homeowners.

When it comes to real estate deals, the only thing I would consider — other than an outright cash purchase — is leasing with an
