Shorewood HUGS goes ‘007’ Chocolate Ball sets ambitious fundraising goal in seventh year

James Bond and several of his look-alikes took back the night during the seventh annual Chocolate Ball, mingling with socialites and community leaders over chocolate-filled martinis and chocolate-covered everything.

The theme for Shorewood HUGS’ annual gala was “007,” and festivities for the Feb. 6 fundraiser included a James Bond look-alike contest, live silent auction and a raffle drawing.

Molly Babyak, a board member for Shorewood HUGS, said this year’s fundraiser was designed to be bigger than previous years. The event was held at the Clarion Hotel in Joliet and tickets sold out ahead of the event.

“This year, [the theme] came out of one of our founder’s mouths,” she said. “We thought if we don’t do it this year, then it won’t happen. It was like connecting the dots. We thought it would be a fun thing to do.”

On average, the fundraiser draws 400 guests. But, organizers for the

seventh annual increased their expectation to 450 people. Babyak said the nonprofit also hoped to beat last year’s fundraising effort, which pulled in $38,000 through donation.

Shorewood HUGS has granted more than 400 wishes, valued at $500 or less, since the inaugural Chocolate Ball in 2008. Of the total number of wishes granted, 116 of them were awarded last year.

Sam Pavelka, of Shorewood, was one of those guests. He attended the fundraiser with his wife and said he was enjoying his night.

“I love coming here,” he said. “It’s date night.”

Pavelka said he loves how the organization is able to giveback to the community, adding that its mission is the reason he and his wife attended.

“They gave me a wish in 2012,” he said. “They gave my daughter a swing set. I asked for that. I was sick at the time.”

Cheryl Pavelka, of Shorewood, was also in attendance. She said she was impressed by how well the event was organized.

“I love the themes they come up with every year,” she said. “You get to mingle and socialize; knowing that you’re giving back to a good cause is wonderful.”

Sandy Moretti, of Joliet, was perusing the many assortments of chocolate on hand for the fundraiser. She said she attends

the event every year.

“It’s a great event to socialize, see friends, and see everyone dress up,” Moretti said. “What I really come for is the chocolate.”

Ken Minor, of Channahon, took some time to look at the silent auction items and said Shorewood HUGS is a cause worthy of support.

“There’s so many things we could go to and we really like to support the organization and its sponsors,” he added.

Kathy Alexander, of Gardener, attended the fundraiser as part of a volunteer group. She said she’d never attended the Chocolate Ball prior to that evening, but was happy with the event – and the desserts.

“It’s for a very good cause,” she said. “And oh, my god! The chocolate. Everything is really good.”

Donations through the annual gala help Shorewood HUGS give back to community, and Babyak added that granting those wishes is what makes events such as the Chocolate Ball worthwhile.

“We get as much out of it as the recipients,” Babyak said. “It feels good to give.”

Joliet hires engineering consultant for Rock Run Creek project

The Joliet City Council last week paved the way for the city to move forward with plans for the Rock Run Creek improvement project.

Officials said the project will look at the existing roadway conditions and weight limit restrictions on Essington Road near Rock Run Creek.

Improvements include the replacement of an existing twospan concrete beam structure with a three-span concrete slab

structure.

The city council approved a professional services agreement not to exceed $167,016 with Hutchison Engineering for Phase I engineering services on the project, as well as an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation that allows Joliet to recoup 80 percent of the cost.

The city will initially pay the consultant and invoice IDOT for the federal share of the project once Phase 1 engineering is completed.

Reconstruction of the roadway over Rock Run Creek will cost an estimated $3,018,000.

Public utilities efficiency study Joliet also authorized a professional services agreement for a Department of Public Utilities efficiency study.

In 2015, the city council initiated this request as part of a review of the 2015 comprehensive water and sewer rate study.

Consulting Group to manage the project, including conducting interviews with stakeholders, touring facilities, reviewing organizational structure and evaluating staffing, work practices and level of service.

Joliet will pay $54,700, out of its water and operations fund, for the study.

High school art contest illustrates heroin’s deadly potential

Last year, 51 people in Will County died from heroin overdoses – the second highest number of heroin overdose deaths during a one-year period in the county’s history.

To shed light on the dangers of heroin use and combat what some local officials have called an “epidemic,” the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office is enlisting the help of area high school students.

“I hope participating students will first educate themselves about the horrendous dangers of using heroin, and then use their knowledge to create an original piece of artwork that drives home the message for people of all ages,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a press release announcing a student art contest aimed at illustrating the deadly consequences of heroin use.

Any student who attends a Will County high school is eligible to enter the contest, which will award college scholarships to the three pieces that best illustrate

the consequences of using heroin. The first place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship for a university, college, trade school or other post-high school educational institution, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Second and third place winners will receive $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships, respectively.

“The purpose of this contest is to involve our young people in raising awareness about the heroin scourge that is destroying so many lives and killing so many people, not just in Will County, but across our nation,” Glasgow added.

The contest scholarships will be funded through money seized from criminals who were engaged in narcotics trafficking, which Glasgow called a fitting use of those funds.

“I can think of no better way to spend money that otherwise would have been used to pump deadly poison onto our streets than to redirect these resources toward an educational campaign aimed directly at eliminating the market for heroin,” he added.

Additionally, the three winners

will have their submissions reproduced and prominently featured in the updated version of the state’s attorney’s Gang Awareness and Prevention Book.

The entire back cover of the book, which is scheduled to be release later this year, will feature the first-place winner’s artwork.

“The theme of this art contest is deadly serious,” Glasgow said.

“Any students who participate can say they contributed an important voice to this cause.”

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. April 8, and winners will be announced the week of April 25. Participating high schools must designate a school representative to coordinate submissions for the contest, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

High school art programs may incorporate the project into their curricula, but students may also choose to work independently.

However, the state’s attorney’s office said those students are still required to submit their work through a designated school representative.

Taser Officer Safety program to expand

City officials unanimously approved the Joliet Police Department’s request to purchase 50 additional Tasers at a cost of $109,626.

The request, which the city council approved at its Feb. 2 meeting, would allow law

enforcement officials to improve officer safety and reduce injuries to officers and offenders.

Joliet police first implemented a Taser Officer Safety program in 2010 with an initial purchase of 25 devices. Since then, the department said it has continued to expand the program.

According to the Joliet Police Department, the program was started after a department

analysis showed that a total of 83 cases considered use-of-force encounters led to lost work time and workmen’s compensation claims due to on-duty injuries.

Because the Taser devices have a five-year shelf life, the police department will replace the first round of Taser issued and upgrade to the more efficient Model X2.

The purchase is part of the police department’s 2016 budget.

Ready or not, tax season will be upon us sooner than we may like. Did you have to frantically search for your financial paperwork last year? Did you have to forego some deductions you deserved because you couldn’t find the supporting paperwork? Did you have to pay your tax preparer an additional amount to sort out the jumble of information you dumped in his or her office at the last minute?

Here are some tips to make this year more organized. There are many ways to organize paperwork, so choose the ideas that resonate with you and adjust the system to fit your needs.

First, choose a container to hold your documents. Several things to consider when deciding what container to use include: where you will keep it, how easy it is to put papers in it and retrieve papers from it, how secure it will allow your papers to be, and whether or not you’re a “visual” person who would prefer a somewhat open container.

To simplify the remainder of this discussion, I’ll assume you’re using a file cabinet. However, my comments are relevant no matter what type of container you use.

Next, create broad categories to group papers. If your categories are too

specific, you’ll have too many places to search for information. For example, rather than create separate categories for doctor’s bills, prescription receipts, and medical insurance, you might want a category called “Medical.” Be sure to name the categories the way you think of them. For example, you may prefer to call the category “Health,” rather than “Medical.”

Use hanging file folders to contain each broad category. Place the folders inside the filing container, and put a well-labeled plastic file tab on the front of the each file. Use a bold, black marker to write the labels, or print them with your computer or a label maker – this will make the file names stand out and easy to read.

You should also use manila folders inside the hanging folders. If any particular category has a lot of papers in it, manila file folders can help you create sub-categories. For example, for the hanging file folder labeled “Medical”

three manila folders inside could be labeled “Insurance,” “Prescriptions,” and “Doctor’s Bills.”

The beauty of doing it this way is that all the medical information is in the same general location so you don’t have to hunt through your files for each subcategory.

Put the most current papers in the front of each folder. This will make the information used most frequently easy to find.

Additionally, consider using colored file folders to distinguish various categories. For example, all of the “Financial” files (e.g., Investments, Taxes, Bank Accounts, etc.) can be in green folders, while all of the “House” files (e.g., Mortgage, Maintenance, etc.) can be in blue folders, etc. This will allow you to easily zoom in on the appropriate section of your file cabinet and quickly find the file you want.

Although properly setting up your files may be quite time consuming, you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

Listed on the United States National Register of Historical Places is the beautiful Rialto Square Theatre in downtown Joliet. This year makes the 90th anniversary of its opening. Some of the best performers in entertainment have graced the stage over the years, but the financial security of the beloved theatre is in question.

In December of last year, Joliet Councilman Larry Hug urged the city of Joliet to stop its annual donation to the Rialto Square Theatre. It has been said without this donation the theatre would close. No one wants to see the theatre close its doors and there’s a simple solution, look at the calendar.

Downtown Joliet hosts several events throughout the year, and the Rialto Square Theatre needs to be a part of them. Star Wars Day is the perfect time for merchandise sales and screening of films. Race Fan Day can host NASCAR drivers for meet and greets along with special screenings. New Orleans North is a great time to host a buffet inside and be an extension of the party. Look at the

calendar for local events and be a part of the fun.

The Rialto Square Theatre used to open screening films and that timeless art needs to return. Recently released independent film“AdiosVaya Con Dios” is written and starring Joliet native Zachary Laoutides. The film has several scenes in Joliet, is a Bel-Air Festival Selection and would draw a great showing in Joliet.

Special screenings are a great idea to showcase our local productions, provide family fun and show what is relevant in the world today.

The time has come for the Rialto Square Theatre to embrace change and welcome everyone into its doors, not lock them out.

Taxpayers can win March 15

I have been advocating for elected officials to treat taxpayer money as if it was their own for many years without many positive results.

I hear people on boards say their tax increase is just a little money or people won’t mind because we are giving them something. They forget these boards are

giving you something, using your money without asking you if you want it. In our representative democracy, citizens are elected to represent the “people.” The “will” of the people is reinforced when there is a vote by referendum.

The Homer Township tax referendum on the March 15 ballot says we believe people in Homer Township should have a say in how much they are taxed.

This is not a Republican, Democrat or Libertarian issue. It is a citizen and business issue.

Although this is an advisory referendum, it is the strongest statement citizens can make to elected officials.

Once this is approved by the voters this March, other townships will take up the call to get control of their property taxes.

We in Homer Township need to hold our elected officials accountable to the will of the people. If elected officials do contrary, our representative democracy demands they be voted out of office. This is the strongest statement we voters can make. This is your opportunity to make a difference. Please Vote!

Caritas raises $360K for USF scholarships

It’s all about love – love for a school that has graduated thousands, the love of giving back and the love of a little competition.

The University of St. Francis celebrated its 59th Annual Caritas Scholarship Ball Jan. 23 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

Regina Block, major gifts officer of the USF, explains ‘Caritas’ is the Latin word for love and is the driving force behind one of the longest-standing

black-tie charity events in the Will County area that has raised nearly $4 million throughout that time.

The event was started 59 years ago by a few businessmen as a holiday party to raise money for their school and the Sisters that taught them.

Each year the party grew and with it the annual prizes for auction grew more memorable with alumni vying to bring in the most funds.

From $900 bottles of Scotch and a day on the set of the TV sitcom Modern Family to last year’s audience with the Pope, alumni were out to win bragging rights while fostering the continued love of their school, said Block.

Through the years the event has been held throughout Will County including places like the Rialto Theatre and Lewis University. This was the first year it was held at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, drawing nearly 400 people and was chaired by Terry and Sue D’Arcy of Shorewood.

A record-setting year, the event raised $360,000, all of which will go directly to fund scholarships for

those attending the University of St. Francis.

“We are very excited that our community members —our alumni, students, parents and friends, led by Terry and Sue D’Arcy and their Cartitas Committee team members —believe in the USF mission and support our goal of providing high-quality education to as many students as possible,” said USF President Arvid Johnson. “The support that we receive at Caritas is evidence of a forward-thinking community that will continue to thrive.”

Block notes that 96 percent of USF students need some type of financial aid. “It is our hope and goal to ensure that financial means are not a deterrent to keeping committed, hardworking students from achieving their dreams of a college education,” said Johnson.

LTHS students help starving children

ACES physical education class raises $1,000 during food packing event

A physical education class at Lockport Township High School is helping to feed 13 children for one year thanks to donations collected by the leadership group.

The All Children Exercise Simultaneously, or ACES, P.E. class raised $1,000 by competing to pack the most food during a Jan. 27 Feed My Starving Children event.

The money raised will be used to pay for a complete year of food for 13 children in a third-world country.

At the packing site, the ACES team packed 32,184 meals into 149 boxes. Those meals will feed 88 children for a full year.

Regional champs Lockport wrestlers, girls bowlers lead locals to sectional

For the third time in five seasons, the Lockport wrestling team earned a team title at the regional level.

This year, it was because the Porters were at full strength for practically the first time all season.

Lockport tallied 209.5 points to beat runner-up Oswego, who scored 147 points.

In winning the regional, the Porters qualified 11 wrestlers for next week’s IHSA Class 3A sectional at Bolingbrook.

Leading the pack was defending state champion Shayne Oster who earned the only pin of any wrestler in the finals, as he pinned Plainfield Central’s Jared Ellingwood in 5 minutes, 46 seconds at 145 pounds.

Oster had been out a month with an injury.

“I have been wrestling really hard in practice and getting back in shape so it was nice to compete again,” he said. “I am just getting

the feel back. It is nice to get the momentum going and keep it all the way to state finals, I hope. I trust my training and I know I have the skills to succeed, so missing time doesn’t bother me too much.”

Other regional champions were Brandon Ramos (126), Trevell Timmons (152) and Ronald Tucker (285).

Abdullah Assaf placed second with a 6-4 loss to defending state champion Michael McGee of Plainfield East. He was joined by Brenden Ramsey (132), Baylor Fernandes (138) and Chandler Proszek (160) as runners-up.

Placing third and advancing were Anthony Molton (106), Payton Fernandes (170) and Nicholas Dado (195).

At the Providence Regional, Joliet West advanced Darvell Flagg (1st, 113), while Will Spruell was second at 195. Placing third to advance were Austin Poch (120), Joshua Durrly (138), Meekah Ben-Israel (220) and Robert Ford (285).

Poor first half haunts West in loss to Raiders Bell posts 20 second half points, but comeback bid falls short at Bolingbrook Although some of Joliet West’s players are back from the team a year ago, the Tigers are still a young, inexperienced team and while coach Nick Diforti knows that, he doesn’t want to keep using it as an excuse.

“This is probably the last time I will say it, but we are still young.

We still play immature a lot,” Diforti said after a 68-61 loss to Bolingbrook last week.

While youth is no longer an excuse, inexperience still plays a part in the Joliet West roller coaster season along with players trying to fit into roles.

“They want to do the right thing for the team and a lot of those guys are friends. They want to please the coaches and play the pleasing game with everyone,” Diforti said. “Sometimes they play that role to a fault. When we need them to step up and assert themselves in the game they do – like Trevian (Bell) in the second half – but they have to learn to do that from the get go, then get everyone else involved.

“We teach our kids not to be a robot. Some coaches tell kids they can only do this or only do that.

We want our kids to be basketball

players and not robots.”

Bell erupted for 20 of his gamehigh 24 points in the second half as the Tigers moved from shooting beyond the three point line to in the lane.

“We made an assertive effort in the second half of getting the ball inside and we did that. We are learning what teams want to do to us, it is very evident how they like to play us. When we get our guys going, we are a pretty tough team to play,” Diforti said. “The first half was brutal. We scored 18 points in the first half and then it was 61. Our defense was better in the first half and then we flipped it – we stopped playing defense and put some points on the board. We started the game really flat and that is unacceptable in February.”

While Diforti said both teams started flat, Bolingbrook (9-9, 5-3) outscored West (13-7, 4-4) 20-10 in the second quarter to build up a 31-18 halftime lead.

Then in the third, Bolingbrook used a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 20.

“Never count us out because we have guys that can put the ball in the basket, but you can’t play catch up against a good team because when you do, it doesn’t

GIRLS BOWLING Lockport is hoping for a repeat of last year.

Last year the Porters won regional and sectional titles en route to the state title.

This year, they started the postseason off right by winning the Sandburg Regional Saturday at Orland Bowl with a 6,281 sixgame total.

Nikki Mendez made it a double win for the Porters as she added the individual title, firing a 1,376.

“It is really exciting,” Mendez said. “We were very happy. We had the team title won, so I wasn’t nervous about the individual title.

I have been in a little slump, so this gives me a lot of confidence moving forward.”

Bailey Delrose (1,289), Dana Ackerson (1,288) and Grace Karraker (1,179) contributed six games to the title win as the Porters got seven players involved in the regional.

Next up for Lockport is the Joliet West Sectional at Joliet Town and Country Lanes. The top four teams and five individuals not on those teams will advance to state.

“Our ultimate goal is to get to state,” Mendez said. “We have to bowl like we know how and if we do that, I think we will be okay.

Spare shooting will be big. We have been working very hard on it and the practice is paying off.”

•Minooka and Joliet West will also be at the sectional after advancing out of the Rich East Regional.

Bell said it’s a game the Tigers would like to have back.

“We didn’t come out with enough energy,” Bell said. “It’s one of those games you wish you could play over. We picked it up in the second half which was good, but the first half just killed us. We started getting to the hole in the second half, which helped with the comeback but the deep range just wasn’t there for any of us, even our best shooters.”

The Tigers also got eight points apiece from Elijah Ward and Teyvion Kirk, while Mike Smith added seven.

Brew pubs, craft breweries possible in downtown Joliet

A change in the City of Joliet’s ordinance governing businesses in the downtown area could soon pave way for brew pubs and craft breweries. At the Tuesday, Feb. 2 regular meeting of the City Council, officials approved an item that would allow for new license classifications and regulations for craft brew establishments in Joliet.

James Haller, director of community and economic development, recently noted how a developer reached out to city officials with a proposal inquiring about an interest in setting up a brew pub. Haller said the city’s zoning ordinance and regulation were previously vague in terms of what’s allowed and what’s prohibited.

“In the downtown area, it allows for bars and restaurants to serve alcohol,” he said of the ordinance’s revision. “It didn’t specifically allow breweries.”

The change creates class A1 and A2 definitions and regulations for

these establishments, allowing Joliet to comply with Illinois Liquor Control Act. Haller said the growing popularity of craft breweries and brew pubs at the national level is one reason for Joliet to consider the ordinance’s revision and act on it.

“People in their age categories don’t frequent sports bars,” he said of millennials aged 21 and older.

“They like a good meal with their beer.”

Officials hope that adding classifications to Joliet’s existing liquor code will allow for future business endeavors and in the meantime, allow the City to lease a portion of Union Station to a potential craft brew establishment.

Almost every other establishment serving alcohol operates in the B-3-zoned commercial corridor.

In moving forward, city officials denote that craft breweries and brew pubs will be permitted uses in the B-2 central business district.

City officials hope the community will respond positively to the change. “There’s no doubt that it’s allowed,” Haller said of brew pubs and craft breweries. “It’s meant to clear up any confusion.”
