Several Troy Middle School students have been selected to participate in the distinguished 2017 All-Illinois Junior Band, which will perform January 13 and 14 at the University of Illinois Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

Christmas Express brings in holiday funds CASA of Will County hosts 8th annual Christmas Express

From Joliet to Tinley Park, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Will County pulled out all the stops for the 8th annual Christmas Express on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4.

The event is one of four fundraisers ran by CASA aimed at raising funds to support the nonprofit organization in the effort to advocate for and represent abused and neglected children in Will County.

Christmas Express allowed children and their families to arrive at Joliet Union Station to find cookies, cocoa and games.

Upon arrival in Tinley Park, the event featured sleigh rides, crafts and pictures with Santa. Additionally, CASA hosted breakfast or lunch for children and their families at Durbin’s.

CASA event manager Lisa Gunggoll said it’s nice seeing how Christmas Express gets the community involved.

“It grows every year,” she said, adding that this year it sold out.

Colleen Mora is a member of CASA’s board of directors. She said the event’s ability to draw people in is made possible, in part, because it holds great significance to support the cause.

“The Christmas event we’re having, I think, is a nice way to show during the season of giving, people being able to come, being able to give and be able go through this whole (experience)—you know the crafts and the reindeer food and the face painting—and having a good day and knowing that all their money is going to-

“For me, it brings me back to being a kid,” he said.

Dolgner was riding one of the Christmas Express trains to Tinley Park with his family.

Peter’s wife, Laurie Dolgner said kicking off the holiday season early by attending the event was a nice way to spend the day.

“For me, it’s about family,” she said. “It’s a reminder of how important it is to spend time with family.”

Laurie said she and her family had tried their hand at many of the activities offered at Joliet Union

Station.

Laurie said her children had never rode a train until then.

“I think they’re very excited about that, too,” she said.

Kassie Bay, of Frankfort, said she was looking forward to this year’s Christmas Express.

“It was the best Christmas thing we did last year,” she said. “(It) was like the best holiday event we went to.”

Bay said while visiting Joliet Union Station, her kids tried their hand at a number of activities including painting and the mini golf game.

Noting that Christmas is a big deal for she and her family, Bay said she enjoys having an early chance to get into the holiday sea-

son spirit.

“Since the kids are little, we like to do a lot of festive activities,” she said.

Proceeds from Christmas Express will support the effort to train community volunteers to represent and advocate for abused and neglected children in Will County.

The event typically brings in between $40,000 and $45,000.

Mora said the work of CASA is important on a number of levels.

“We really need to have advocates that care about the children that go into the (Department of Child and Family Services) system, that stay with our kids from the time they come in to the time they leave the system.” she said. “They get to the know the kids; they get to the know foster families that they go with; they go to the court; they advocate for them; they really take an interest and a love for these children. I believe in that because I think our kids are our future, and we need somebody that’s going to mentor them.”

Noting that she’s an adoptive parent, Mora said she understands the system and what people go through.

Gunggoll said she would like for people to know there are a number of ways to giveback to CASA. “There’s so much that they can do (to support CASA),” Gunggoll said. “There’s a lot of different ways that they can help.”

Gunggoll explained that CASA is looking for people to spread the word about what they do, volunteer and provide donations.

Gunggoll said CASA supports 60 percent of the kids in the county.

The organizational goal is to reach 100 percent of those in need, she said.

Watch out for newest cyber scam: fake apps Entering credit card information opens a consumer to potential financial fraud Always looking for and coming up with new ways to rip-off the unsuspecting, for scammers and cyber-thieves, it really is Christmas.

This year for shoppers, especially for those doing a lot of online buying and downloading apps to their mobile devices, new dangers are lurking. Hundreds of

fake retail and product apps have popped up in Apple’s “App Store” and Google’s “Play Store” in recent weeks, according to the Better Business Bureau.

Apps have become a popular way to shop, particularly for people looking for deals. But there are serious risks, especially to using a fake app.

Entering credit card information opens a consumer to potential financial fraud.

Some fake apps contain malware that can steal personal information or even lock the phone until the user pays a ransom.

Starbucks started the first “retail app,” and many stores have

followed but,security experts say, the biggest source of the fake apps is China.

“Cyber-thieves have also found ways to make their counterfeit apps convenient; they encourage users to log in using their Facebook credentials,” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois.

“That could dangerously expose their sensitive personal information to identity theft.”

“Because there are so many apps available shoppers can easily be confused but there are many red flags to look for,” notes Bernas.

“Cyber-thieves have also found ways to make their counterfeit apps convenient; they encourage users to log in using their Facebook credentials ...”

The BBB advises app users to take a closer look at the fine print before putting it on their phones and to take these precautions: Check when it was developed, what version it’s on, who was the publisher and look for customer reviews. If you pull up a major retailer’s app and it has no

reviews, then you’re probably on the wrong one.

Check the link connected to the app to see if you’re being directed to the retailer’s legitimate website.

Never click on a link in any email to download a new app.

Only go to the website of the retailer to get a link to the legitimate app.

Check safe online shopping for additional tips on safer shopping.

Bernas also recommends, “Use a credit card, because card companies typically have restitution plans that can save you if you fall victim.

Using your debit card on the other hand can have you losing everything you have in the bank.”

Shoppers who encounter a fake app should immediately notify Apple or Google. The information can also be reported to BBB Scam Tracker in an effort to help track down where the scam is coming from.

Rt. 59, Jefferson St. plan sits with panel Proposed Jefferson Street and Route 59 tax increment tabled

A Joint Review Board for Shorewood’s proposed Jefferson Street and Route 59 tax increment finance district tabled any further action on Nov. 29 that would’ve brought village officials closer to adopting a series of ordinances to establish the redevelopment plan and project.

The measure intends to use the value generated by freezing the property tax base to create new dollars. The board brings together representatives for taxing bodies affected by the proposed TIF district.

Mary Thompson, senior vice president for Kane, McKenna and Associates, said the project could be hugely beneficial to strengthening the village.

Township Administrator Jennifer Dylik said the Troy Township Board hadn’t had a chance to review the TIF proposal, and is interested in tabling the matter.

“We got it very shortly before our November meeting,” she said.

Shorewood-Troy Public Library Director Jennie Mills agreed.

“Our board meeting was November 10, and we didn’t get it before the board meeting,” she said.

The proposed project area includes 173 buildings and 128 of them are 35 years or older.

“The economic downtown has caused an increase of decreases in the equalized assessed valuation for this area in particular,” Thompson said. “We have many, many challenges in real estate alternatives.”

A village engineer report shows that within the TIF district, there is not inadequate space for a storm

water system to support new developments.

Shorewood aggregated lagging equalized assessed valuations for four of the last five years, village records show. Additionally, the consumer price index, or rate of inflation, fell three of the last five years.

“This area in particular qualifies as a conservation area, and we believe that is the best way in fact to implement a TIF district,” she said. “(The goal is) to conserve (the proposed project area), so that it doesn’t fall into a completely blighted situation so when you have an area that qualifies as a conservation area, the age is one of your factors.”

Shorewood’s redevelopment plan conforms not only to the TIF Act, but also the village’s comprehensive plan. Thompson said she wanted it to be clear that village officials have certified that there is no intent to take any homes.

“The wording is such as is provided by the TIF Act,” she said. “It

basically states they will not take more than 10… there is no intent to dislocate more than 10 residential units. There is no intent to relocate any residential units, but we have to follow the act.”

Shorewood officials are working to draft a series of ordinances to restrict powers to acquire residential properties.

In doing so, the village is not required to complete a housing impact study.

To date, the village has allotted $79 million toward the TIF budget.

None of those funds have been earmarked for capital improvements.

Officials estimate that the proposed boundary of the project could generate $21,133,523, based on the 2015 equalized assessed valuation. Upon termination of the TIF district, projected property values will jump to as much as $42 million.

In a 6-2 vote, the board opted in favor of tabling the TIF redevelop-

ment plan and project until Dec. 20.

If there’s no decision made within 30 days, the proposal receives a positive recommendation. The joint review board typically meets annually once a TIF district is created. At that time, a review is performed and amendments to the redevelopment project can be made.

If supported, the matter will move to the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees where they will hold a Jan. 24 public hearing, at which time residents will have time to ask questions or provide comments. The TIF district can be created two weeks later or up to 90 days thereafter.

If the project receives a negative recommendation, there’s a 30-day window to iron out the details further. Shorewood Village Board of Trustees would also need a super majority vote, or three-fifths of the board’s support, to create the TIF district.

It’s Time To Sign

Signing Time is a video series and television program eleminating communication barriers

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST American Sign Language (ASL) has become mainstream in the community at large. Twenty-five years ago, families used American Sign Language only with their child who was deaf. But for many others in our special needs community who have communication disorders, communication is difficult. Today, a quarter century later, when children of all ages and abilities learn to move their hands to make ASL signs, their minds are learning as well. A child who is signing acquires a better vocabulary than children who do not sign. An innovation that encourages children and their families to use ASL is Signing Time. Signing Time is a video series and television program that eliminates communication barriers that exist for children with disabilities.

“It’s become very mainstream to use sign language with children in your family,” said Rachel Coleman, the creator and Emmy-nominated host of Signing Time.

This past Saturday, November 12 at 5:30 p.m., over 300 people from across the U.S. traveled from Florida, Alabama, Utah, and everywhere in between to Columbia, Tennessee. Folks came for the Indy+Friends Signing Time Live Concert. The concert took place at the concert hall barn of American Country Music singer and songwriter, Rory Feek.

Rory’s two-year-old daughter, Indiana, or Indy as she is known by friends, was born with Down syndrome. About a month before the concert, Rory surprised his daughter, Indy, by inviting Rachel Coleman and Signing Time to their barn-turned-concert hall for a onenight-only surprise concert. For over 300 individuals who were in attendance, tickets were free to the public. The concert was also streamed live online and the $10 virtual ticket fee was made possible by the Loeys-Dietz Syndrome Foundation in honor of Indy’s friend Scout who introduced Indy to Signing Time.

Rachel Coleman created Signing Time in her home of Midvale, Utah when her oldest daughter, Leah, who is profoundly deaf, was 4 years old. Rachel’s youngest daughter Lucy was born with Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy.

The day before the concert, we decided to make the over 500 mile drive from the Chicago western suburbs to Columbia, Tennessee. We arrived at the farm of Rory Feek about 4 hours before the concert. It wasn’t until a half hour before the Signing Time concert began that I was met in front of the concert hall barn by Aaron Coleman, the husband of Rachel and father to Leah and Lucy. As I hopped over a fence, I made my way backstage of the Signing Time concert to sit down with Rachel Coleman and her daughter Leah.

Similar to Leah, when I was born I began to learn American Sign Language to help me with the severe language disorder that I was diagnosed with. Leah and myself both use the Accessible Touch accessibility feature on the iPhone to help us with communication.

“It [Signing Time] really helped because it helped build a community that wasn’t there previously,” said Leah Coleman. “Because a lot of hearing parents with deaf children didn’t know what to do and my mom allowed to pave that path for them.”

Leah told me about a time when she was younger and on a soccer team. “I don’t want to play with her because she is deaf,” said one of Leah’s soccer teammates. At the time, Leah’s mom did not interpret the exact words to her daughter. She did not want to subject Leah to the ignorance at an early age. At this moment of Leah’s youth, the use of signing among her peers who were not deaf was not yet mainstream. Ignorance was the catalyst for Rachel to create Signing Time and be able to share sign language with other children and families.

Fast forward to November 2016 when over 300 people from across our nation came together to Tennessee for the Signing Time concert. One local family from Tennessee, Jeremy and Elayna Cook and their son Chance, is the perfect example of how Signing Time has made American Sign Language mainstream for people who are hearing as well as hearing impaired. Even though Chance does not have any special needs, the Cooks taught their baby boy sign language for

the reason most families today use Signing Time with their children: baby sign language lets babies communicate their needs rather than crying. As a child’s hands are moving, the child’s emotions are being expressed. As a by-product, their mind is learning.

Special needs families of all different diagnoses know the joys and challenges that each other face. Many try to jump at any chance they get to support other families. Take the Feek and Coleman families for a perfect example of two special needs families coming together to support each other and uniting the community.

“What I love about our Signing Time events, they’re unlike anything anywhere else,” said Rachel Coleman.

“Because even as families who have children with special needs, we divide ourselves up like ‘oh I’m going to go to the deaf stuff or we’re going to the Down syndrome Buddy Walk’ but we still divide ourselves up and at a Signing Time event you see every kind of parent, typical kids, kids with autism, Down syndrome, and I can pull anybody from the audience, any child and have them on stage and have them participate in a meaningful, real way and we can all communicate.”

The Coleman and Feek families made a big difference in many lives when they came together for this unique Signing Time concert at Rory Feek’s barnturned-concert hall.

“It’s just a coming together of families and communities and reaching out and acknowledging that we’ve been there for each other,” said Rachel. “We’ve made a difference in each other’s lives.”

Upon arrival they spoke to several residents who stated that their homes had damage caused by gunshots. One residence stated that they observed four males in the area when the shots were fired.

One resident stated that while he was on his porch he heard bullets going past him. He was not injured but a vehicle in his driveway sustained broken windows from a bullet. Another home sustained a bullet to the corner but it did not penetrate the inside walls.

One resident reported hearing the gunshots and reported that one bullet traveled inside the home and through the walls of a bedroom that was occupied by a female resident. She was not injured.

Joliet West beats North Lawndale in the Chicago Elite Classic at UIC

CHICAGO – Joliet West went into last weekend with a chance to make a statement.

Consider it made.

Over the course of two nights, the Tigers defeated defending Southwest Prairie Conference champion Minooka and North Lawndale, a top 10-ranked team in Illinois.

“This was a statement game for us and I think we made a good statement,” said West coach Nick DiForti.

The players knew what was on the line.

“We were looking for this opportunity to make a statement to show Illinois we can compete with anybody,” said Drakebound senior Teyvion Kirk.

The Tigers defeated North Lawndale 75-62 at the UIC Pavilion as part of the Chicago Elite Classic behind 27 points from Kirk and 21 from Trevian Bell.

points and was the one that got West started after a slow opening few minutes.

“They say I am the emotional leader and therefore if I am going, they are going. If I start off good, they are going to start off good,” Casterberry said. “I just play my role. I know (Kirk and Bell) are scorers and Eddie is Eddie and Elijah. I am there to clean up. To rebound, to box out and to protect the rim – that is my role on this team.

“As long as everybody knows their roles, it will help us get to our goal and that is winning state and we should be an elite team like we have been in the beginning of the season.”

The beginning of the season has been impressive as West has opened 6-0, winning its own Thanksgiving tournament and then opening play in its new conference with a 63-35 win over Minooka, who play a style of basketball that hurt the Tigers a year ago.

Porters look to movement as key

Ball movement.

That will be a key thing for the Lockport Township boys basketball team.

An easy example of that was second year Porter coach Brett Hespell throwing out a stat after his team defeated Lincoln-Way West 57-54 on Friday, Nov. 25 in the final round of pool play in the 21st Annual WJOL Thanksgiving Classic.

“We scored 19 baskets and had assists on 17 of them,” Hespell said of the big win over last season Class 3A state runnerup.

“We followed the game plan of sticking to the principles.”

As long as the Porters do that they believe they have a successful season.

“That will be a huge aspect of our team for winning games,” Lockport junior center John Meyer said. “We can be feeding the post more to take advantage of our height, and then passing it back out to shoot from the perimeter if need be.”

Meyer and senior post player Christian Schultz, both listed at 6-foot-6, are the tallest players on the Lockport roster. While that’s not super height, they do have sustained height with eight guys listed as 6-foot-2 or taller.

Another one of them is senior forward Chase Travis, who is a 6-foot-3 transfer from Hinsdale South. Longtime Lockport followers will recognize the name, as Travis is the son of legendary Porter player - Chuck Travis. All the elder Travis did during his four years as a varsity player for the Porters between 1976-1980 was help guide them to a record of 110-9 in that span, including being a starting guard as a sophomore in 1977-78 on the undefeated Class AA state championship team.

A few names that Porter football fans were familiar with will be making a mark on the hardwood. Ben Davis, who quarterbacked the first seven games of the season, before being sidelined by mono, is back. He didn’t play basketball last year in order to concentrate on football and

baseball.

A lot of his passes this season went to fellow senior Patrick Cooper. Sophomore Jacob Karli, who filled in for Davis for the final three games, has also made the jump to varsity in basketball.

“Between Ben Davis and Jacob Karli, it’s good that we are getting those athletes with us who have competed,” Hespell said.

“We shouldn’t be hurting for leadership.”

Senior point guard Matt Smietanski is a returner from last season. He was a steady hand as the Porters went 3-1 with a trio of close victories at the WJOL Tournament, and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Junior guard Nolan Barthel also showed his clutch play, hitting a pair of free throws in the final seconds to clinch the victory as the Porters defeated Lincoln-Way West.

After not playing well at all in the season opening 62-37 loss to eventual tournament champion, Minooka, the Porters bounced back with a 50-45 overtime victory against Plainfield Central.

They then rallied late to defeat an improved Romeoville team 47-45 in the third place game.

A key will be health. Matt Medina, a 6-foor-5 inch post player missed the WJOL Tournament with a knee issue. He’s expected to be back from now on. Meyer missed most of last season with what amounted to a Jones fracture in his pinky toe.

But he got healthy for the spring track season and won the Class 3A state title in the shot put.

“In the opener [against Minooka] we weren’t prepared mentally, but we got that straightened out and worked on defense,” Meyer said. “We’re ready to play with quick teams.

We just have to slow it down and set up a good offense.”

Although it was a home loss in a SouthWest Suburban Conference crossover on Friday, Dec. 2, the Porters did just that against a talented Thornton team. They were within two points with less than a minute to play in the third quarter, but eventually lost SEE PORTERS PAGE 13

Thompson takes over the reigns at Central When a new coach is hired, there is always some concern.

That was not the case with the Joliet Central boy’s basketball program.

The coach is not new, let’s just say different. Veteran coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr. replaced Jeff Corcoran as the head man of the Steelmen.

Thompson spent 16 years as the mentor of the Lockport boy’s basketball program and last season was the sophomore coach at Joliet West.

Central opened the season in a familiar way at the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic tournament, they were in the championship game for the fourth consecutive year.

Although the Steelmen lost a

thriller at the buzzer to Minooka, Thompson likes where this team is headed.

“These kids listen and they play hard,” Thompson said. “From the tip to the last second there is no quit in this team. That comes from what Jeff [Corcoran] and his staff instilled in them.”

With Central moving to the Southwest Prairie conference this season, it gives the Steelmen a chance to see new opponents and develop different rivalries.

That was evident in the first game of the WJOL tournament, as Central won a double overtime game against conference foe Romoeville. A win that helped on two fronts.

“I’ll take the extra basketball at

this time of the season,” Thompson said. “It was also good to get a win and we won’t have any of that talk about when are they [Central] going to win with a new coach.”

The Steelmen are small in stature but play bigger because of their quickness and style. They mix up the defense very well, can throw on the press at anytime and work for the best shot offensively with the ability to hit the three pointer at anytime from anyone.

Central is lead by senior Jose Grubbs. He’s a three year veteran that can play any position on the floor and is considered one of the better overall players in the area.

USF remains unbeaten Twelve different players scored – four of them in double digits – as the No. 3-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team remained undefeated with an 88-52 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Judson University Saturday evening at the Sullivan Center.

With the victory, USF maintained its unblemished record overall (8-0) and in CCAC play (40). Judson dropped to 7-5, 3-2 in league action.

USF led 20-10 after one quarter before widening the gap to 42-22 at the half. The Saints made 20 steals as they forced 27 Judson turnovers on the night.

We just came off a game with Minooka where we plays a pass, swing, flex type of offense. This a

good early season gauge for us.”

West had some of the hype last season, but it intensified this year as it only lost Jason Bingham, who transferred to Joliet Central.

“We had a roller coaster of hype last year and this year it is a lot different,” DiForti said. “The community is more involved, the school is more involved and the reporters are more involved.

Having it last year and going through what we did, we understand it and they have really matured mentally and they are more like young men understanding that everyone is going to give us their best and we talk about it every day in practice so they don’t forget.”

“I’m looking forward to that, it will be really fun,” Meyer said of the Porters playing at Lockport Central. “We’re going to play our

best each night out. We want to stay over .500 all season. We have a solid team and want to have a solid year.”

Joliet West and is the one player who has experience with Thompson. McNair, who was a standout on the Steelmen football team, is a great athlete that can play a variety of roles. King plays a key role on the boards for Central, but can also move to the outside. The other three, Pitchford, Stone and Hornsby, play vital roles off the bench.

Cameron Blackmon leads the junior class and runs the team from the point. With his leaping ability, along with his quickness,

Blackmon is a threat at anytime on either end of the floor.

“This team really plays like a team, this is not an “I” team,” said Blackmon. “We set each other up to make the most of our opportunities.”

Ryan Sunders is another junior, who has seen more time on the floor as the season began. A three-point artist, he is one of the taller players and provides great depth for the team rebounding.

Central’s schedule has some interesting match-ups this com-

ing season, both in the Southwest Prairie conference and out of conference.

On December 16th, the Steelmen will get there first rematch with a game at Minooka.

Over the Christmas break, the Steelmen will participate in the State Farm Holiday Classic in Bloomington.

Then a very interesting nonconference match-up comes a month later. Central will host Lockport on January 31st.

The conference season ends

with key games at home with Joliet West on February 18th and travel to Romeoville for the conference finale on February 21st.

“We are continuing to feel more comfortable as a team with each game,” Thompson said. “We must work on getting better shots offensively and use our time wisely.

This is a great group, there will be mistakes, especially early, but the are learning from them. As my wife always told me, you can’t bake a cake without a few broken eggs.”

8 Holiday Traditions to cut, keep or rethink Do I actually want to do this? Can I actually afford this? and Do I really have time for this?

Each year we look forward to certain family traditions, like baking Granny’s gingerbread cookies or watching It’s a Wonderful Life with the kids. But sometimes all those fun traditions can get overwhelming. That’s why we’re giving you permission to choose what you want to do this year. Ignore the pressure to people-please, and instead pick the traditions that don’t stress you out.

It’s your holiday, after all. And it’s going to be awesome as long as you’re with the people you love— no matter how you celebrate. The key to deciding what stays and what goes is to ask yourself: Do I actually want to do this? Can I actually afford this? and Do I really have time for this?

HERE ARE EIGHT HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

TO GET YOU STARTED: ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BASH Some people love hosting Christmas parties. Cooking for 50?

No problem! But if you’d rather not spend two precious weeks in December planning and prepping for your annual Christmas open house, then don’t. Forget the cheese ball, sherbet punch, and mini gherkins, and just get together with a few close pals at a local restaurant. Split the check and enjoy a simple, stress-free evening

with your nearest and dearest.

Or, if you love throwing parties but hate the cost, invite less people. Make it a potluck, or ask someone else to co-host and share the responsibility. It’s your party — do what you want!

COMPETITIVE LIGHTS DISPLAY Don’t let your Christmas-crazy neighbors guilt you into a lights display worthy of Rockefeller Center. If your family enjoys looking at lights, pack a thermos of hot chocolate and drive around town to admire the best of the over-thetop yards. It’s free, and you don’t have to freeze your tail off!

If you prefer decking out your house with lights but don’t have the time, start early and stop when your energy does. Make sure you’re decorating your house because you like it, not because you’re trying to match the neighborhood. Your time and money matter more than how many cars drive by.

ELF ON THE SHELF This one is a hot-button issue.

So we won’t get into the pros and cons. We’ll just say this: If you’re pro-Elf, make it easier on yourself by not getting too elaborate. Sparkles doesn’t need to build a Rube Goldberg machine in the middle of the night. Keep it simple and keep it fun. And if you’re over Buddy, just tell your kids he went back to the North Pole this year—for good. They’ll be fine, we promise.

THE SHOPPING FRENZY We like a deal as much as the next person, but if you’re shopping “for sport,” take a time-out.

It’s okay to get a rush from the shopping season—buying stuff should be fun But don’t let the pressure to spend destroy your budget.

Take control of your money by creating a Christmas-specific money plan and a detailed gift list.

And stop shopping when your list is complete. If you have extra energy to burn, try a family game of flag football. It’s much less dangerous than the mall (well, maybe).

FAMILY PORTRAIT CHRISTMAS CARDS

Photo cards are a sweet tradition, but they aren’t a must. It’s okay if you didn’t have time or money to schedule a photographer, buy matching red-andwhite outfits, and order hundreds of glossy prints this year. Cards are a meaningful gesture, but don’t make them more difficult or more expensive than they have to be.

You can still have a great tradition by limiting your card list and having the kids help you craft some sweet letters with stickers and glitter — how fun is that?

PRICE-INFLATED PLANE TICKETS Instead of heading home for the holidays, why not visit your family in January or February when the prices have come down? You could even start a new tradition, like meeting your folks in a fun city between your two towns. Imagine a calm, post-holiday vacation for half the price and half the crowd.

Now that’s peace on earth.
