Festival of Trees sparks spirit of season Ballot, online voting continues through Dec. 31 for favorite tree

The Village of Shorewood recently lit up at nightfall ushering dozens of residents and other

community members to get into the spirit of the season during its annual Holiday Tree Lighting.

The gathering served as the kickoff for another event in town, Festival of Trees, which continues through Dec. 31. “It’s been years

[of] growth [in] the planning of this,” Mayor Rick Chapman said.

“The lighting of a huge tree, like this, has just come into the play the last five years.”

This holiday season, the Demask family donated their tree to the Village, with a desire for it to be lit for residents and other members of the community to enjoy.

“Every year, we go around [and] people put their name in that want their tree removed from the property, and they want to donate it to us,” Chapman said. “It’s been working well.”

The tree was equipped with thousands of lights for people to enjoy.

“We planted this tree 35 years ago on our fifth wedding anniversary,” Rose Demask said. “We just celebrated our 40th anniversary, so it’s a very meaningful tree to us, but in the space it was in, it was re-

ally outgrowing its space and kind of encroaching on the driveway and sidewalk.”

That’s when the Village’s public works department stepped in to take down the Demask family’s tree, which stood at more than 40 feet.

“We thought this is a great way to end the life of this tree, although I hated to do that because I just love the tree,” Demask said.

Demask said donating the tree to the Village brings added meaning to her knowing that she and her husband have been Shorewood residents since 1982.

Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand and greeted those in attendance for the Holiday Tree Lighting.

Chapman greeted the crowd with some remarks, and people took pictures with their phones as the tree was lit for all to see.

This year 30 Shorewood businesses and organizations signed up to decorate a tree for the festival. Residents are invited to come out to Village Hall, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Festival of Trees voting runs through Dec. 30, at which point the winner will be notified and receive space to promote their business or organization in the Village of Shorewood Parks and Recreation’s summer program guide.

“This year, we’re doing something different,” said Katie Fitzpatrick, recreation and event coordinator for Shorewood Parks and Recreation. “We’re encouraging spectators to go online or fill out a paper copy, here, at Village Hall.”

WBO vocal music educator Kelsey Hagan said the opportunity is an honor for the students, and they are excited to sing with and learn from the JJC singers and to showcase their own talent.

Troy Community School District 30-C’s WBO Winter Carolers will join the JJC Chamber Singers and Brass Ensemble for one piece and will perform three pieces on their own – “I Saw Three Ships,” arranged by Andy Beck; “A La Nanita Nana,” arranged by Greg Gilpin; and, “Deck the Hall with Jingle Bells,” arranged by Russell Robinson.

USF alum honored by Army Corps bids Midwest Emmy Awards project to benefit

Documentarians, news reporter recognized for work Emmy Award wins for several University of St. Francis (USF) alumni are highlighting the university’s Communication and Media Arts (CMMA) program. The 2017 Midwest Emmy Awards were recently awarded by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at the Swissotel in Chicago.

Jessica (Saraga) Walsh ’05 (Joliet) and Brendan ’05 Walsh (Joliet) were awarded in the category Outstanding Achievement for Documentary Programs-Topical for their eco-documentary, “Making Waves: Battle for the Great Lakes.” The two-hour film documents the aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes and the efforts under way to control and prevent them. The Walshes filmed, edited, wrote and produced the documentary, which was narrated

by Chicago news-legend Bill Kurtis. “Making Waves” then aired on PBS stations in Chicago, Buffalo, Toronto and throughout Michigan and New York.

The Walshes are co-owners of Great Lakes Media, a video production company which specializes in corporate promotions, live events and documentary production.

“We are still in complete shock,” exclaimed Jessica Walsh. “This being our first documentary, we were truly honored just to be nominated. But then to actually win, I don’t think either of us thought it would ever happen! We are just so thrilled beyond words,” said Walsh.

After 20 years of experience in the TV news industry, Keating is surprised but happy to have won two back-to-back awards in the same category. In 2016, he received an Emmy in the same category for his contributions to

the coverage of the suicide of Fox Lake Police Officer Joe Gliniewicz in 2015.

“It’s great to be recognized by my peers, but the real reward is in knowing I gave it my all,” comments Keating. “I was working hard before, but I guess now I’m just on a roll!”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be spending millions of dollars in the next couple of years to remove invasive species, encourage native plant growth and replenish the underground water source for a patch of extremely rare habitat in the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve.

Lockport Prairie features wet and wet-mesic dolomite prairie, which are among the most critically imperiled natural communities on Earth.

More than half of the high quality wet dolomite prairie in the world is located at the preserve, which is home to endangered and threatened species.

The Army Corps released a bid packet for the project on Nov. 17 and bids will be opened Dec. 19. Restoration work could begin this winter and it will span an estimated five years. The project will total $2.5 million initially, but there could be additional appropriations in the coming years to fund more restoration options.

“The Forest Preserve and Army Corps of Engineers have been working together for over a decade to develop a strategy to preserve and enhance Lockport Prairie,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer. “We’re excited this project is moving into its next phase with a significant investment by the Corps in preserving the future of one of Will County’s natural wonders.”

Lockport Prairie inhabitants include the federally endangered Hine’s emerald

dragonfly, leafy prairie clover and lakeside daisy; the stateendangered golden corydalis and spotted turtle; and the state-threatened stiff sandwort and Blanding’s turtle.

The project falls under Section 206 of the Water Resources Development Act, which protects aquatic resources in the United States. The project’s goal is to restore the natural habitat and critical groundwater relationship between the Forest Preserve’s Prairie Bluff Preserve in Crest Hill and Lockport Prairie in Lockport Township.

As groundwater from Prairie Bluff moves slowly toward the Des Plaines River, it flows into Lockport Prairie where it seeps from a bluff or percolates above ground creating habitat for a diversity of plants and creatures. But the preserve is getting drier because the flow of groundwater has been reduced by decades of human activity, ranging from excavation of the I&M Canal to the creation of parking lots and roads in the area.

According to a 2015 Lockport Prairie project feasibility study, the Hine’s emerald dragonfly’s reproductive output has dropped due to declining habitat, and the leafy prairie clover’s population is waning. Both species depend on the wetland habitat found within dolomite prairies.

“Other signs of hydrologic disturbance have also been observed, most notably the death of several of the statelisted spotted turtles due to the drawdown of ground water while they hibernated,” the study stated.

Joliet West NHS gives back with Purple Project The Joliet West High School National Honor Society is giving back to the community through a partnership with the Purple Project, an organization that spreads acts of kindness by collecting donations and items for young mothers in need.

To kick off the partnership, Purple Project founders, Joe and Sherry Anicich, recently spoke to the students during a powerful presentation that told the story of the organization’s foundation, which was established to honor

their daughter Alisha Bromfield and her unborn child, Ava, who were brutally murdered in 2012.

While alive, Alisha spread the message of choosing love, not hate. To continue Alisha’s message, the Purple Project extends love and hope by giving financial and emotional support to single mothers in the community.

NHS Officer James Papandria is proud to partner with the Purple Project. “The National Honor Society is a philanthropic organization that’s focused on giving back to the community, especially a community that’s given so much to us,” said Papandria “As the holidays rapidly

approach, and we give thanks for all our family, friends, and support networks, it’s important to realize that not all are fortunate enough to have that same experience. This is why we do what we do, to help others who are less fortunate than we are, to help the most vulnerable in our community. Luckily, we found an organization that shares the same goal.”

This year’s goal is to provide support to three single mothers that were identified by the Purple Project. NHS students are collecting infant supplies and monetary donations.

“The Purple Project is an amazing organization that does so

much for the community,” said Papandria. “I’m extremely proud that the National Honor Society is able to reach out make such an impact on the community and its most vulnerable members, along with helping the Anicichs turn their tragedy into something beautiful.”

Celebrating anniversary of statehood Will County raises Illinois Bicentennial flag marking statehood anniversary

Will County Executive Larry Walsh and other local officials honored the 200th birthday of the State of Illinois last week by raising the Illinois Bicentennial flag at the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago Street in Joliet. A yearlong celebration will commemorate the state’s milestone birthday.

“We are proud in Will County to display this beautiful flag and acknowledge our state’s 200th birthday,” Walsh said. “Illinois is the 21st state in the union and I am proud of our progress. Despite the current challenges we face,

it is important to note the proud history of progress over many past challenges. The future is still bright and our citizens are what makes Illinois great.”

The official birthday of the state of Illinois is December 3, 1818. Today’s event marked the beginning of the yearlong campaign, “Born Built, & Grown” which will honor the people, places, and things that make Illinois strong, kind, and beautiful. Numerous flag-raising events occurred simultaneously today across the state.

Other statewide events include a Martin Luther King celebration on January 15, 2018 and a birthday bash on Presidents’ Day, February 19, 2018. A complete list of events can be found on the website: illinois200.com.

R.A.C.E. donates nearly $75K to charites Chicagoland Speedway, Route 66 Raceway, R.A.C.E. and Levy Restaurants combine to provide over $275,000 in 2017 Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway’s charitable entity, Racing Advocates for Community Enrichment (R.A.C.E.), donated $58,647 in grants to 21 Chicago area charities last week at their year-end luncheon, raising its total charitable gifts in 2017 to a R.A.C.E. record-setting $74,479.

“It is incredibly rewarding to reflect upon the impact Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway has been able to make on the local community as R.A.C.E.’s sixth year comes to a close,” said Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway.

“We are particularly grateful to the numerous organizations we partner with throughout the season and the individual impacts they are making within the communities they serve.”

Van donated to Boys & Girls Club of Joliet Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow and Terry D’Arcy of D’Arcy Motors have partnered once again to purchase and provide a transport vehicle to another vital community service agency: The Boys & Girls Club of Joliet.

The state’s attorney and the local business leader joined forces to deliver a new 16-passenger van that the Boys & Girls Club will use to transport youths to and from field trips, special events, educational, and athletic opportunities and other beneficial programs with partner organizations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

The van was presented through their ongoing public-private partnership to provide meaningful assistance to at-risk children in our community State’s Attorney Glasgow and D’Arcy have split the $27,000 cost for this safe and reliable transport vehicle, which they presented to Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Kahlil Diab during an afternoon dedication and titletransfer ceremony last week at the club in downtown Joliet. emony.

Making certain the Boys & Girls Club can safely transport its participants to various activities enables this important youth organization to function effectively.

More than 1,000 youths, ranging in age from 6 to 18, are enrolled in the program, which for more than 60 years has provided a safe and positive environment where young people can engage in fun, character-building activities supervised by informed, supportive adults.

On any given afternoon during the school year, between 115 and

120 children come to the club in downtown Joliet to participate in various activities. That number skyrockets to 450 children per day during the summer when school is not in session.

“The Boys & Girls Club provides a critical positive influence on at-risk children in our community,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “This vital organization provides a safe haven for young people where they can participate in fun, constructive activities under the skillful and compassionate guidance of dedicated mentors.

These adults help them build

character and self-esteem, enabling them to steer clear of the evils of street gangs and drugs.

We want to make certain that the lack of a reliable transport vehicle doesn’t keep these kids from participating in events and programs that can literally save their lives.”

The State’s Attorney continued: “Experience makes it clear that every dollar that we spend on prevention and intervention like this saves us 10-plus dollars in remedial costs.

This investment in our Boys and Girls Club will result in huge dividends down the road.

How Green Bay Packers could have been Chicago’s home team BY Boundary maneuver kept Northern Illinois from becoming part of Wisconsin MICK ZAWISLAK OF THE DAILY HERALD Were it not for the action of an enterprising lawyer 200 years ago, the northern portion of Illinois would have the badger as the state animal and Green Bay Packers as the home football team.

Indeed, the shrewd move in 1818

by Nathaniel Pope, the Illinois territory’s delegate in Congress, to relocate the original proposed boundary from the southern tip of Lake Michigan is regarded as a decisive event in Illinois history.

The shift meant Chicago, then an unincorporated backwater, became part of the nascent state with a port on the Great Lakes.

How Illinois’ northern boundary was designated 42 degrees, 30 minutes latitude was a tactical maneuver that effectively set Wisconsin statehood back 30 years.

Pope’s move provided the groundwork for Chicago to become Illinois’ economic juggernaut and turned state politics upside down as the area grew.

But it also had the national implication of ensuring Illinois would be a free state at a time of percolating political unrest over slavery.

“This was not a matter of people interested in the Chicago area, it was actually farsighted people who were about to become the leadership in the new state,” said John Reda, associate professor of history at Illinois State University.

At the time, construction of the Erie Canal connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes had just begun and Chicago was contemplated as one end of a canal providing a path to the Illinois River and on to the Mississippi.

Illinois would be connected to New York and New England via the Great Lakes shipping channels, providing security for the perpetuity of the Union, Pope argued to Congress, and aligning Illinois firmly with the northern states.

Even then, “there was the possibility of a civil war,” said Ken Olson, professor emeritus at the University of Illinois, who has written about the Illinois bor-

der controversy.

Congress “wanted to have a water route between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River for shipping supplies and soldiers if needed, since the Ohio River route could become contested,” said Olson, coauthor of a new book “Managing Mississippi and Ohio River Landscapes” which includes a chapter on the northern border.

Along with giving Illinois access to Lake Michigan, Pope’s border modification raised the population nearly to the 40,000 required for statehood, Olson said in an article he co-authored for the Journal of Earth Science and Engineering.

By the time Illinois territory was considering statehood, only the northern border was in question. Kentucky and Indiana already were established and the Mississippi River formed a natural boundary on the west.

How did the situation come to be?

The genesis was in the Northwest Ordinance Act of 1787 approved by Congress that set guidelines for vast tracts ceded to the new government after the Revolutionary War. At first, the original 13 colonies thought they could simply extend their borders to the west, said Gregory M. Gordon, a history professor at the College of Lake County.

“What we call the northern part of Illinois was supposed to go to Connecticut and the southern part of Illinois was supposed to be part of Virginia,” he said.

Instead, the Northwest Ordinance set up the framework allowing three to five areas to apply for statehood on equal footing with other states.

“It was a pretty radical plan,” Reda said.

Kaskaskia was the capital of the Illinois territory and home to Nathaniel Pope, a Kentucky native who became the first territorial secretary of Illinois and its delegate in Congress. His petition for statehood, presented to Congress in January 1818, was referred to a committee, with the northern boundary still to be set.

While some communities in the northwest part of the Illinois territory, such as Galena with its lead mining industry were hopping, the northeast landscape was bleak.

Chicago “was a nothing place,” Gor-

don said. “Southern Illinois was where the action was.”

According to an article in the Illinois Periodicals Online project, the 1787 ordinance intended for the northern borders of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to be aligned touching the southern tip of Lake Michigan. However, the map used by Congress mistakenly showed the southern shore of Lake Michigan to be about six miles north.

And when Indiana became a state, its northern boundary was approved about 10 miles north of the originally intended boundary.

Those precedents helped Illinois, as did a sense of urgency.

When a slave state entered the union, as Mississippi did in late 1817, there was a push by the North to counter with a free state. Some feared Missouri, a slave territory, would seek statehood and the ensuing national crisis could put Illinois’ bid on hold.

Pope took a bold stance. In pushing for a more generous northern boundary, he “got an extra 50 miles,” Reda said.

Illinois became the 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818, including an additional 8,500 square miles comprising what now are the 14 counties north of the original boundary line.

Wisconsin became a territory in 1836 and for several years protested against the northern Illinois boundary, claiming the southern tip of the lake as the true boundary. In 1840, delegates in northern Illinois meeting in Rockford declared the property properly belonged to Wisconsin.

But nothing came of the efforts and the matter ended in 1846, when Wisconsin was admitted as a state with its southern border where it exists today.

When Illinois was admitted, Pope was made U.S. judge of the district, which included the entire state. Pope County on the southern tip of the state is named for him.

When Sam Quigley-Smith took over the head women’s basketball coach at Lewis University in May, the one thing she didn’t have to change was the circle around De. 5 on her calendar.

As coach at the University of St. Francis, the battle between the two programs was big because of the proximity of the schools and the local rivalry of the programs. In fact, last year, Quigley-Smith’s Saints upset the Flyers in Romeoville.

After accepting the position at Lewis, however, the date took on new meaning as it was QuigleySmith’s return to the court that bears her father’s name inside the USF Sullivan Center.

“It was a little stressful, but it was a really great welcoming,” QuigleySmith said of going back to St. Francis. “It is really all about the people.

It is similar people to at Lewis and that was part of making the move – knowing and having that feeling that there would be great people around you. It is one of those nights that you don’t want anybody to lose as a fan and as the community with the cross town rival – it is really a fun night and something that really draws people to the game and that is big for women’s basketball and area sports.”

Not only did Quigley-Smith

make the return trip to Joliet, she brought with her members of the coaching staff, including former USF assistants Dan McCarthy and Michael Delrose, who coached with her at USF and Charnelle Reed, who played for her last season for the Saints.

Joining the coaching staff in their return was senior guard Chrissi Ekhomu, who played at USF under Quigley-Smith the last three seasons.

This year at Lewis, she is averaging 3.4 points per game and posted a season-best 10 points in Lewis’ 59-46 win over St. Francis.

“I was different being on the other side. In the beginning, I almost walked to the wrong bench, it was kind of funny,” Ehkomu said.

“It was just fun to play against my friends. These are people I think are going to be friends for a long time.”

Ehkomu said her decision was all about finishing her career with her coach.

“I felt like I signed up to play with Sam Quigley and from my freshman year she has helped me develop as a player and as a woman and I just really did want to spend the last year with her and I felt like it would be a challenge and I wanted to accept the challenge and see what it was,” she said. “Coming from Joliet Catholic, it is all you SEE HOME PAGE 15

Quigley-Smith said Ekhomu came to her about the transfer after the coaching change.

“I didn’t want to be part of the decision making process because I think she would have been great in either place. So it is hard for me to push for one and not the other,” Quigley-Smith said. “When she decided, I was going to help her and when she made the decision, we helped her get enrolled in classes and it all happened pretty quickly after the staff moved over. I think I have a great relationship with her and just the whole Ekhomu family.”

Ekhomu said the game was emotional for her, especially playing against USF senior Kamari Jordan.

“It was emotional because it was my last time on this floor and I felt like me, Sam and the girls built something since 2014 we built an incredible program and it is great to see them still doing well, but at that time, there were no friends – we just had to get the W,” Ekhomu said. “(When I guarded Kamari) We tried not to look at each other so it made it easier to guard each other. We came in together and we clicked immediately. We talk every day, we talk after every game, we have a Snapchat streak. She was

One of the adjustments for Ekhomu came in her role on the team going from NAIA to NCAA Division-II and joining a new team.

“I was used to always having the ball in my hands and now having

other guards that can handle the ball as well and it not just being one person. Anyone can get it and push it. Sometimes I find myself hanging around the rim when I probably should be running the floor,” Ekhomu said. “I enjoy it. I have bonded with the girls and I love the team and I feel like they have welcomed me which has made it a lot easier and more fun.”

Lockport’s Delrose wins Plainfield N. Strikefest

It’s billed as the most competitive girls bowling tournament in the state.

The state team champion has bowled in this tournament the past eight years, there were 44 teams participating and it once again lived up to it’s reputation.

This past Saturday, Plainfield North hosted the 25th annual Strikefest bowling tournament at Town & Country Lanes.

After the morning three game session, the teams are divided into 12-team divisions for the afternoon three games.

Only the top 12 teams in the Gold division carry their team scores over, everyone else starts new. All bowlers carry over their individual scores.

Plainfield North, under first year coach Chelsea Oshita, finished 12th in the Gold division.

O’Fallon was the overall cham-

pion, with Lockport in fourth and Minooka finishing fifth. The Porters Bailey Delrose was the individual champion with a six-game series of 1,380.

“We grew as a team today,” Oshita said. “I really like where we are at in December. Today, we found out what we need to work on and that we can compete with the best teams in the state. We really started well in the morning, we did tail off a little in the afternoon, but we made the gold division and that was important. That shows that if we can get that consistency, we belong with everyone else.”

Oshita also earned high praise from North athletic director Ron Lear.

“Chelsea has done a tremendous job with this team,” Lear said. “I’m so happy to have her a part of this program.”

The Tigers were led by the 11th place finish of junior Jenna Sussenbach, who had a six-game total of 1,222.

A dream is a good place to start, but I want you to develop this into a plan that focuses on a goal. Break this down, and figure out how to achieve it.

I see three ways to achieve this home ownership goal. One, you do the long division math and save like crazy for however many years it takes to save up $170,000. The

second is to put $130,000 down on a $300,000 home, and take out a $170,000, 15-year fixed rate mortgage. This is the only kind of debt I don’t beat up people for having. The good news is, with your income, you could probably pay it off in half that time.

A third possibility is to buy a $130,000 house. Write a check for nice, modest home now, and in five years — saving wildly the whole time, since you’ll have no house payments — move up and pay cash for a $300,000 home.
