DAR recognizes officers for ‘Policiation Day’ Shorewood among local police departments to receive baked goods The Louis Joliet Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution recently showed their appreciation to local police departments, in recognition of the 126th anniversary of the DAR. The goal of the “Policiation Day” event was to find a way to serve those who serve Jolietarea communities, according to the organization.

The word “policiation” was coined at a DAR meeting, joining the word police with appreciation.

Beginning the weekend before Oct. 11, the service project started with 18 chapter members and three prospective members baking homemade goodies.

The baked goods were then brought to Policiation Day Captains, who delivered the cookies to police departments in Channahon, Crest Hill, Joliet, Plainfield, Romeoville and Shorewood, as well as the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Children and grandchildren of DAR members helped with

baking and made special cards for the officers.

“The police departments were grateful for the kindnesses and the goodies,” said Mary Erhardt, regent of Louis Joliet Chapter NSDAR. The chapter’s first vice regent, Mary Dailey, stopped by the Romeoville Police Department with goodies. Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey thanked her and the Louis Joliet DAR for delivering treats to officers.

Shorewood police officer Danielle Malone thanked DAR member Lyn Freebus for baking goodies for the Shorewood Police Department.

The chapter said Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek will be sending a special thank you to the Louis Joliet DAR Chapter for the goodies, delivered by members Jessica Dailey, Chris Tipsword, Amy Knizner and Barb Smith.

Troy Middle School band, choir students take music honors Students participate in ILMEA District 1 Junior Festival

Twelve band students and three choir students were selected to represent Troy Middle School at this year’s Illinois Music Educators Association’s District 1 Junior Music Festival, Elementary and Junior High Division.

The students competed against hundreds for the honors, performing selected solo works for the judges to earn their places. Only a small percentage of the very top musicians from about 60 schools were selected, according to Troy

Middle School Vocal Music Director Kelsey Hagan.

“It is truly an honor to be chosen,” Hagan said. “These students were willing to not only take on the extra preparation and responsibility, but did it remarkably well.

It speaks to these students’ work ethic and dedication.”

“It’s a great opportunity for them,” Troy Middle School Band Director William Goetz said. “These band students practice at home a lot and are taking lessons with great private teachers. As a result, they are among the best musicians in the area.”

Homes in business tax expansion questioned Under new proposal, there is no change to current property owners already paying special tax

The proposed expansion of a downtown Joliet tax was subject to questioning for including some residential property.

The matter, which was discussed last week by the Joliet City Council, arose in the wake of city action taken to approve the expansion of the proposed boundary for the special downtown business tax district.

Joliet officials voted to add two parcels belonging to the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate owner after testimony provided during an Oct. 18 public hearing showed the property wasn’t fully included.

Under state statute, the city is allowed to expand the proposed boundary only during the meeting immediately following the public hearing.

Joliet councilwoman Brooke Hernandez Brewer cast the lone dissenting vote. During the last public hearing, she recalled hearing from owners who couldn’t afford the special business tax and others who held homes within the proposed special taxing district.

“We did hear from people that wanted not to be included in the boundary, however,” Hernandez Brewer said.

Hernandez Brewer questioned if there was another way to establish the boundaries without hindering those interested in being part of the proposed business tax.

City Manager Jim Hock tried to explain.

“As much as possible when

we establish these boundaries, we excluded residential wherever we could,” he said. “But, the properties have to be contiguous; they have to have a common boundary. You can see on the map we carved out wherever we could, but there are a few residential locations.”

Hernandez Brewer said she is concerned about not being able to amend the ordinance in the future.

Hock said the city’s vote is not intended to provide the final say on the matter.

State law dictates that a 60-day period follow the public hearing to allow for up to 51 percent of residential and property owners to file a protest with the city.

Should that occur, the ordinance to propose the expansion of the downtown business tax couldn’t take effect.

Under the proposal, the expanded area would include business, commercial and industrial property beginning at but not including Collins Street Prison as the boundaries travel south on Collins Street toward Joliet Township High School, and extends from Train Bridge along Cass Street toward South Chicago Street to I-80.

Under the new proposal, there is no change to current property owners already paying the special tax. For property owners included in the expansion, the new rate will result in a property tax increase of 8.6 percent. Expansion will allow the new special service area to generate an added $230,000 for economic development purposes.

Hock said if the boundaries of the map are expanded, community input among members of the expanded taxing district will be key.

Hock emphasized that dollars generated by the special business tax will work for the greater good of the community.

“The City Center Partnership’s looking to change their bylaws

to make sure that they broaden their membership and make sure they include these business and property owners,” he said.

“Even residents can be part of the board and have input on how these funds are expended in the future.”

The council will vote on the proposed expansion of the special taxing district Dec. 20.

Forest Preserve District turns 90 District has grown from 143 acres to almost 22,000 acres

BY CINDY CAIN FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF WILL COUNTY In 1926, Calvin Coolidge was president, prohibition was in force, Babe Ruth was slugging home runs for the Yankees and Will County was in transition.

Wolves still roamed free in some areas of the county 90 years ago, but development was taking off and a movement was underway to build a “super-highway system” linking Will County to Cook County and beyond.

In Joliet, community leaders were working hard to raise funds to build the city’s first YMCA, and excitement was growing for the opening of the Rialto Square Theatre on Chicago Street. The glitzy showplace was set to open May 24, 1926, and the Joliet Evening Herald-News had all of the festive

details in its May 23, 1926, edition.

Another story in that edition of the paper announced a community-based quest to create a countywide forest preserve district. This movement to save the county’s “timber tracts” was spearheaded by the Joliet Rotary, and it was led by Dr. W. Henry Wilson, chairman of the Rotary’s Forest Preserve Committee. Wilson, a nationally known pathologist who worked at Silver Cross Hospital, stressed the benefits of preserved open space.

“It is accessible to the public, for pleasure and recreation, and is beautifying to the county,” he said at the time.

Rotary members said they feared the county’s open spaces would go the way of the buffalo without a forest preserve district.

required to get a forest preserve referendum on the Nov. 2, 1926, ballot. The referendum passed by almost a 2 to 1 margin, with 16,611 people voting in favor of the district and 8,774 voting against the

measure.

“Because of the foresight of Dr. Wilson, his fellow Rotary members and the thousands of voters who approved the initial referendum, the lives of Will County resi-

dents have been greatly enriched, and they will be for generations to come,” said Ralph Schultz, the forest preserve district’s chief operating officer. “I hope that we can continue to enhance their vision as we seek to protect, restore and interpret nature and to make our great open spaces accessible and enjoyable for the residents of Will County.”

In the 90 years since its creation, the Will County Forest Preserve District has grown from 143 acres in 1930 to almost 22,000 acres owned, leased or managed today.

All of this preservation came at a time when the county’s population mushroomed from 110,732 in 1920 to around 700,000 current residents.

Efforts by Wilson, his Rotary colleagues and the voters of Will County have made a difference in the county’s quality of life for all species. They stepped in as development was ramping up in Will County and they provided a pathway to preservation.

Joliet launches new Facebook page ‘Up-to-Date’ page puts media releases, event notices online

A new Facebook page, dubbed as Up-to-Date with Joliet Mayor Bob O’DeKirk, was recently launched.

Joliet’s mayor said the effort to launch the online initiative is something the city has been looking into.

“One of the complaints that I’ve heard with all the things happening in the city is some people were complaining that they weren’t receiving notification of events or things that happen until after the fact, until we had talked about it, read about it in the paper,” he said.

“We’re trying to make things more current for people on Facebook.”

The page includes media releases, job postings for the city, community events and some Joliet history.

“Anybody who is interested and want to stay current, feel free to reference that Facebook page, Up-to-Date with Joliet Mayor Bob O’DeKirk,” he said.

Road to victory in WWII For Veterans Day, remembering one soldier’s dangerous job of carrying vital supplies

BY MARK DEPUE ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY, DIRECTOR OF ORAL HISTORY Frank Merkley is a World War II veteran who never fired his weapon in anger, but his contributions to America’s war effort were every bit as important as those of soldiers in the thick of combat. Merkley, now 96 and living in Princeton, Ill., spent his war driving trucks.

It was a rare case in which the army found the perfect job based on Frank’s peacetime experiences.

He had left school when he was 13 to help support the family, and had driven trucks since he was 16, working for his brother.

Merkley was drafted in November 1942, and was shipped to Persia in early 1943. Once there, he drove his truck along a tenuous road deep into modern-day Iran, the first leg of a long trip toward the Soviet frontier.

(America, the Arsenal of Democracy, sent more than four million tons of supplies to Russia through Persia during the war.)

Then in January 1945, Frank’s unit, the 3949th Quartermaster Truck Company, was transferred to the China-Burma-India theater of operations.

His job? To drive over the infamous “hump” in the mountains of Burma to deliver supplies to China.

During his first trip on the treach-

erous Ledo Road, Frank’s truck got a flat tire. Because of that, he left the assembly area several hours after the rest of his convoy. “I don’t know how I’m here today, except the Lord saved me—twice in one day,” Merkley said 71 years later.

“I was going along through that one road, that mountain there, and I come over way at the top and come around a big curve … All of a sudden the truck stopped. … The Lord stopped it. Believe me or not, the Lord stopped that truck.” A Chinese guard, whose job was to alert trucks of the impending danger, then came racing out to the road to guide Merkley around a bridge that was rotting away.

Had Frank not stopped, the truck would have plunged into a deep ravine, taking him along with it.

Merkley was still on the road late that night trying to catch up with his convoy. Because of the fear of snipers, he was forbidden to use his headlights, and when it started to rain, the night turned pitch black.

“I couldn’t see a thing out the windshield, not one thing,” he said.

“Couldn’t even see the dash. … I had my foot out on the front wheel fender, and I was trying to keep that front wheel along the edge of that mountain.”

On his left, the mountain shot up toward the sky. On his right was a sheer cliff. It was certain death to any driver who missed a curve on a dirt

road that was barely wide enough to accommodate the big American trucks.

Recalling that night during his oral history interview, Frank continued his story, his voice filled with emotion. “All of a sudden a big bolt of lightning come … and it lit that road up just like day. And it put daggers in – zing, zing, zing, zing, zing, zing – like that all the way up to a big sharp curve.”

Guided by that brief glimpse of the danger ahead, Frank pushed forward into the dark. “And I hit that curve right on the nose,” he said.

Frank has no doubt that God had intervened to save his life that night.

“I can’t hardly believe myself the way He lit that road up for me so I could see. … He lit that road up just like it was day time out there – just bright lightning.”

As far as Frank is concerned, God wasn’t quite done with him yet. On the first leg of his journey back to the states, a flight from China to Calcutta, he survived a plane crash. He then boarded a Liberty ship, which sailed into a three-day typhoon in the South China Sea. Needless to say, he was happy to get back to America. Once home in Princeton, he soon got back to work, eventually starting a pest control business and finally retiring at 90 after a lifetime of work.

Kundsen wins state, while Minooka girls place third in Class 3A finals PEORIA — A state champion and a third place team trophy capped off successful 3A state cross country meet for the Minooka Indians on a perfect day for running.

This past Saturday on the famed Detweiller course, senior Soren Knudsen became the Indians first individual state champion in the sport covering the three-mile tract in 14:02.

In addition, Knudsen joins his father, Jim, who won the title for Lockport in 1981, as the first father/son winning combination in meet history.

The first state cross country meet was in 1946.

“This has been my goal since I stated running,” Soren said. “I really can’t put into words what this means right now. To win the big class in a talent rich sport like we have in cross country is incredible.”

Dan Haut of Lockport, in 2000, was the last time an individual from the area was the champion.

Minooka finished 22nd in the team race.

On the girls side, four All-State

performances helped Minooka capture third place with 134 points. Naperville North won with 111 points, while Yorkville was second with 130.

The top 25 individuals earn AllState status.

Emily Shelton, a junior, was third (16:42), with seniors Mackenzie Callahan fourth (16:48) and Ashley Tutt 17th (17:12). Sophomore Vivian Van Eck placed 23rd in 17:20. Freshman Julia Dames was 121st (18:32).

“I had the goal to be in the top three and I felt really good out there today,” Shelton said. “It’s been a crazy last three weeks but I’m already excited for next year.”

Lockport placed 17th as a team and received an All-State performance from senior Morgan Bollinger. She placed 20th in 17:15.

“I was trying to stay as focused as I could,” Bollinger said. “It’s a great way to finish your high school career.”

Nine-year-old has need for speed

In a way, Michael Mucha is a lot like many other boys his age.

He enjoys playing baseball, skateboarding and anything else that may catch the interest of a 9-year-old in the fourth grade.

Then there are the ways Michael is far different than his classmates.

None of them have their own web page, their own Twitter handle and spend several weekends a year driving around a track at 70 miles per hour.

Yes – driving.

Despite only being nine years old, Michael is the driver of the

No. 75 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Cup -or Mini Cup – car in the Central States Region Series.

Super Cup Cars look the same as a stock car one would see in NASCAR races, only half the size.

The cars are equipped with full tube chassis, rack and pinion steering, upper and lower control arms and fully adjustable coil over shocks both front and rear. The driver is protected with a full cage and a five point safety harness, making the cars one of the safest forms of racing available.

“It is real racing in half scale.

The speeds are up there, to,” said his dad, Randy, who serves as chief mechanic, spotter, social media coordinator to name

a few roles. “He will go 75 on the main straight away at Grundy and they will keep their foot in in because the way these cars are designed, they are designed to go fast. If they go slow, it takes time to wind them back up because they are not shifting. They run whatever gear is in it for the track.”

While the cars are half scale versions of professional stock cars, they are not only driven by half scale versions of the drivers.

At nine years old, Michael is the youngest in the series, but the oldest is age 55, with all age ranges in between.

While drivers are allowed to start at age eight, this is Michael’s first year behind the wheel after

spending a few years as a fan.

“We have been going for the last few years to watch – mostly at Grundy County because it’s close to home,” Randy said. “Even before we went, he has loved cars since he has played with Matchbox. Most of the tracks open the pits to the fans after the races and that was when we first realized that they existed and what they were.”

Being their first year as a race team, Randy and Michael have had to rely on other drivers for advice and guidance along the way.

“Everyone is great. We have had more help this year being new and learning about the cars and tracks. They have all been so helpful,” Randy said. “We have had a couple of issues along the way that are rookie mistakes – not on his part – on my part. I am learning how these things are built and what to look out for during set up.”

Once the team got the hang of it, Michael flourished – winning series Rookie of the Year honors.

“It shows that we are in it for real,” Randy said. “He has been on the lead lap for almost the entirety of almost every race this year, which is phenomenal for a rookie. We have talked to guys that run this series or parents of drivers in the series and they have all said they are amazed at

his progress.”

That progress will continue next year as the Mucha’s have already purchased a new car for next season, however, when they signed up Michael only had to have a one year commitment “Our deal with him for everything – whether it was racing or baseball or gymnastics or skateboard lessons or swimming or any of the different things we have signed him up for, the deal has always been that he would follow through for the length of whatever we committed to,” Randy said. “We don’t quit.”

So, while Michael plans to continue his racing career at least one more year, he is does not have his sights set on a seat in a NASCAR just yet – for now he simply races because “it’s fun.”

His dad, however, sees a life impact in the sport, no matter how long Michael stays in the seat.

“For most people, it is an exciting thing to get your license and finally be able to drive a car,” Randy said. “For him, it will just be, ‘OK, I finally have the thing in my wallet but I have been driving for years.’ That is one of the good things, too, of course we will do whatever number of hours the law says, but this will only make him a better driver on the road.”

Indians are State-bound

NORMAL - Minooka entered the Normal Community Supersectional knowing the feeling of wanting to beat a team that beat you earlier in the season.

The Indians reached this point of the season with a win over Plainfield Central in the Romeoville Sectional final – avenging an earlier conference loss.

So, Minooka knew what Normal would have in store after the Indians defeated the Iron just weeks earlier.

“We played this team two weeks ago and we knew they would be out gunning for us,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “We knew that they wanted to kill us, like we wanted to kill Plainfield Central.”

So, the team had to just forget about the time before.

“We knew we couldn’t come into this game thinking that we could beat them again,” Holly Bonde said. “We had to come in and treat it like a whole new game.”

While Normal led in most of both sets played, Minooka grabbed late leads and held on for a 26-24, 25-23 win and its first trip to the Class 4A state finals. The win also denied Normal a thirdstraight trip.

“We had not won the sectional since 1999 and then state was the final eight teams, so this is the first

time we have been to the final four,” Prosek said.

The Indians did all they could to try and minimize the fact that the match was played on Normal’s home court – a location predetermined by the IHSA before the playoffs started.

But as the two teams share the same color scheme, Minooka fans came out to make it feel like home.

“We knew it would be a challenge because this is their court, this is their community and they had a little hype and we knew they had a chip on their shoulder but we had beaten them before and that gave us a little bit of an edge,” said Brooklyn Bachmann. “Then the court is orange and black and our families and student section made it feel like home to us.”

Early in the match, it looked like the home team would steal at least the first set, as the hitters were getting blocked at the net.

“You have to give credit to Rocky, Ali and Holly because they were getting blocked by their big number 15, but they kept swinging and Taylor was picking up digs that I have never seen her pick up before,” Bachmann said. “Everyone’s hearts were just so in it and that’s why we came out late.”

But, Minooka made the proper adjustments.

“At first we were only setting outside. I said, ‘We need to run the middle, we need to mix it up and start finding some holes,’” said Prosek. “We started changing up

our shots instead of just pounding it right into the block. I think both teams were just playing good volleyball, but we were waiting for them to crack.”

The wait paid off as the Indians forced cracks in the Iron and earned the win.

“This has never happened before and this was something at the beginning of the season, we said that we were going to work as hard as we could to make it here and we did,” Ali Papesh said. “We were down and we fought and we came back and we worked together. If one person messed up, they trusted the person next to them. It shows a lot about our grit and how bad we wanted this.”

Minooka (34-6) will face Stevenson in Friday’s 7 p.m. state semifinal at Redbird Arena.

“I am really proud pf this team and I am so happy that we could do this. This is unreal, I can’t believe this happened,” Rocky Perinar said. “I am excited for everything it holds. Since we are there, we might as well win and I think we can do that.”

We’re trying to fix our finances and start saving money, but we just don’t feel like we should take a trip right now. How do I tell my boss?

I made a down payment of $2,500 on a $7,500 motorcycle last week, because I always wanted to have one before I got out in the real world and had bills and other responsibilities to think about. Should I go ahead with the purchase?

TAD DEAR TAD, I’m glad you’re working and learning the value of money and having a job. But I think your dad set you up on this one. I’ve got a feeling he knew what I’d say, and he wanted you to hear it from me.

I teach people how to stay out of debt and build wealth. And there’s always one thing I remind folks of when it comes to buying anything — if you can’t afford to pay cash for the whole thing, then you can’t afford it. The only thing I back off on is when it comes to buying a house.

I love shiny things that go fast,

and so do a lot of people who work here at my office. Right now, there are about six or seven motorcycles sitting in our parking lot, and they’re owned by folks who make good money. And the bikes sitting out there probably range in value from about $1,000 to $10,000. But you know what? Whoever rode in on the $1,000 bike had just as much fun as the one who owns the $10,000 bike.

A motorcycle is a toy, and you should always pay cash for toys if you want to be wealthy one day. Having lots of payments and handing your paychecks over to the bank is not the way to build wealth. I would advise talking to the guy at the bike shop to see if you can rework this deal for a ride you can actually afford!

Board helps support drug enforcement efforts Funds to be used to purchase K9 for Wilmington police, fundraiser underway for SUV Will County Board members Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, and Don Gould, R-Shorewood, recently secured funding for a K-9 drug detection dog for the Wilmington Police Department.

The announcement comes as the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community is seeking funds to help police fight back against the region’s ongoing heroin epidemic.

“Elected officials at all levels of government must work together and partner with local community groups if we want to turn the tide of drug-induced homicides,” Freitag said. “This is a fine example of just that, and I applaud everyone involved that is committed

to keeping citizens safe in both my hometown of Wilmington, as well as across Will County.”

Freitag has seen firsthand the consequences of heroin overdoses, when a good friend died during her first year of practicing law. She has also worked with clients recovering from drug addiction and gone on to graduate Will County’s successful Drug Court program.

Narcotics detector dogs are specially trained to find concealed drugs in buildings, vehicles, luggage, packages and on persons.

The Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community launched a fundraiser to purchase a K-9 detection dog to help Wilmington Police take heroin off the streets.

After Will County Board members

and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow met with coalition members and Wilmington Police Chief Phil Arnold, the state’s attorney offered to use money seized from drug dealers in Will County to cover all expenses associated with purchasing and training a detection dog. The focus of the fundraiser is now to obtain an SUV police vehicle to transport the dog.

Will County officials said area communities are continuing to fight against a heroin epidemic sweeping across the country. Despite making some headway to reduce fatalities through targeting dealers, educating the public and training law enforcement, the number of deaths is on track to top 250 in the past 5 years.

Since reducing fatalities by 35 percent in 2013 and 2014, there has been a near 100 percent year over year increase in 2016.
