Shorewood police hiring officers

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com Within five years, Marine Corps Sergeant Nick Wallace went from living in a homeless shelter on Chicago’s west side to living in his own home in Joliet – one gifted to him by ‘Building Homes for Heroes.’ “In 2014 or 15, I was living in the city and I became homeless. I was living in a homeless shelter on the west side of Chicago and it was during that time that I got hired at Verizon, so I was driving from the homeless shelter to Schaumburg every day until I had enough money,” Wallace said. “The VOA helped me with the first couple month’s rent – it wasn’t in the nicest of areas, but it was better than the shelter,” Wallace said. “It happens to some vets. In my case, it was a freak thing. I paid my rent in advance and they guy I was renting from screwed everyone and I didn’t have any extra money.” Wallace rebounded and ended up working for the city of Macomb, where one day he saw a television commercial that changed his life. “I was watching FOX News and I saw a commercial for ‘Building Homes for Heroes’ and I applied,” Wallace said. “I really didn’t hear anything back for four or five months, then they contacted me in the beginning of September and asked me a few questions and called back a week later and asked me some more personal questions and at the end of the conversation, she told me I would be receiving a home.” On Sept. 19, Wallace received the keys to his home, he had another organization step up and assist even more. Operation Welcome You Home, a Naperville-based volunteer organization, provided furnishings for Wal-

lace’s home. “After I got the home and it was two blessings in a row. I was grateful when I thought they were going to give me furniture for one room, but they bought furniture for every single room and let me pick it out,” Wallace said. Wallace served in the Marines

marine corps sergeant nick Wallace was gifted a home and furnishings from two organizations devoted to helping veterans as they return from overseas.

I am still kind of blown away by it. I will still be sitting in the house just thinking about how awesome it is that these organizations do stuff for veterans. there are a lot of vets out there that need help a lot of the young guys come back and they have issues. from 2003-07, spending time in Fallujah, Iraq. While in Iraq, Wallace was injured when indirect mortar and rocket fire hit his landing zone. He sustained injuries to his back and a traumatic brain injury. He also suffers from PTSD, tinnitus and chronic headaches. “I had several issues and I am still working through a lot of them,” Wallace said. “In 2010, I hit a real low point when I was in school and I was having PTSD and I have a traumatic brain injury and I had nightmares to insomnia – a lot of the mental stuff. You come back and you have to refind yourself because you are not the same person as when you left. I have had a couple guys that I knew commit suicide a couple years ago because they were having such a hard

time and didn’t want to deal with it. “I have been there. I have been in that headspace several times and I have wanted to give up. I think a lot of people forget about the vets and what they sacrificed. For years, I had a lot of anger outbursts – no one in my family understood it, it cost me two marriages and I got help and did a lot of self-help to see what I can do, because at first, I didn’t understand it.” After receiving his new home and furniture, Wallace wants to help other vets the way he was. “I am still kind of blown away by it. I will still be sitting in the house just thinking about how awesome it is that these organizations do stuff for veterans. There are a lot of vets out there that need help – a lot of the young guys

come back and they have issues,” Wallace said. “I want to help to do something for other veterans. A lot of them go through being ashamed and that goes along with that military mindset and there are a lot of vets out there that are struggling. I joined the Plainfield American Legion and I am hoping I can work them and help. I received a blessing and I just want to pass that on, that is what they teach you in the Marines.”

The Village of Shorewood has begun accepting applications for police officers. Up to 150 applications will be accepted until Dec. 6 at applytoserve. com. There is a $45 processing fee to apply. “The eligibility list is prepared every so often until we hire them all or they fail to make it through the process and the list has to be reassembled,” Mayor Rick Chapman said. “If you want to become a cop, now is the time to do that.” Shorewood currently has 30 sworn officers with a starting annual salary of $66,797. Officers also receive insurance benefits, vacation, ten holidays and two personal days each year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens between 21- and 35-years old with a valid driver’s license and high school diploma. Shorewood police officers are not allowed to have “vulgar or offensive tattoos” or any tattoos on their face, neck or hands. “Visible tattoos cannot be larger than one-quarter of the exposed body part,” according to department policy. Copies of a candidate’s driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card, diploma or G.E.D., college transcripts and military service records must be submitted with the application.

dave says: an allowance is ok for kids dear dave: Is it OK to give very young children an allowance?

chrIstIe A: Teaching kids there’s an emotional connection between work and

money is one of the best things you can do as a parent. Once your kids are old enough to do a few simple chores around the house, they’re old enough to earn a little money doing them. In my mind, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting kids who are 3 or 4 on a basic commission system. If they do the jobs you assign them, they get paid. If they don’t do the jobs, they don’t get paid. We put a little dry-erase board on the refrigerator and listed the jobs they had to do

during the week with a dollar amount next to each one. Keep in mind, kids shouldn’t get paid for every little thing they do around the house. Some jobs are just a necessary component of being part of a family. And there are some things kids should do simply because mom or dad asked them to. Some jobs should have a higher purpose in mind, too, because as a parent you should want to find as many teachable moments for your kids as possi-

ble. Once they’ve earned their money, sit down with them and divide it into three separate envelopes — saving, spending, and giving. That way, they get to learn about the uses for money while they’re learning how to work. Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Joliet catholic academy opens 2019 playoffs with commanding win by drake skleba for the bugle

@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com For the second consecutive year, Joliet Catholic Academy travelled to the Peoria suburbs for its IHSA Class 5A first-round football game. In 2018, the road to Champaign began for the eventual Class 5A State Champion Hilltoppers in the Peoria suburb of Metamora. The Hilltoppers, overwhelmed the four-time champion Redbirds, 49-20. On Saturday in Morton, the defending Class 5A champs and 2019 Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic White champion Hilltoppers demolished the host Potters, 42-7. Up front, only 6-foot, 2-inch, 280-pound senior offensive tackle Connor Kovas returns from the state champion line, which were dubbed “The Nasty Hogs”. Running behind Kovas, OL Joe Gorski (JR. 6-2, 250 pounds); OL James Hubner (JR, 5-10, 280 pounds); OL Riley Ward (SR, 6-1, 275 pounds) and OL Josh Jones (SO, 5-10, 290 pounds), JCA rushed for 354 yards, in today’s victory over Morton (7-3). “Last year we were “The Big Dogs” and then moved on to “The Nasty Hogs,” Kovas said. “Right now we are just staying with the Hogs.” It was a great victory today. Our O-Line and Kenyetta and Jordan played outstanding. Our defense totally shut Morton down.” Senior Kenyetta Williams, rushed for 116 yards and scored three touchdowns. After suffering a season-ending in-

jury in the Hilltoppers season-opener at St. Rita, last season, Williams was excited to play in his first IHSA Class 5A playoff game. “I am just so thrilled to have been able to play today, after missing our state championship run to injury last season,” Williams said. The hogs were outstanding today and our defense totally shut Morton down. “Jordan (Anderson) is just a sophomore but what a tremendous talent. I started slow today but I am very proud of how I ran in the second half.” Anderson ran for 105 yards on 18 carries and scored one touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Aidan Voss, rushed for 36 yards on seven carries and broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter. “It was a solid team victory today,” Anderson said. “We played well on both sides of the ball. Our offensive line was outstanding. Being just a sophomore, it was exciting for me to play well. Our whole team is very young and I thank my teammates for my success.” The Hillltoppers took the openingkick off and marched 62 yards on 12 plays and Williams scored the first of his three touchdowns from one-yard out to get JCA on the board. After the first of five PATs by junior Jake Dixon, the Hilltoppers led 7-0, with 6:40 left in the first quarter. “With the windy conditions here in Morton today, I think our opening drive for a touchdown was very instrumental to our victory today,” JCA coach Jake Jaworski said. The Hilltoppers drove 56 yards in

12 plays and extend their lead to 14-0 on Williams’ second touchdown, this time from five yards out, with 8:53 in the half. With six seconds remaining in the half, Anderson rumbled in from the one for a 21-0 Hilltopper lead at the break. Led by sophomore linebacker Robby Purchase, the Hilltopper defense held Morton to just 70 first-half yards. Morton’s super-sophomore running back Seth Glatz (1,379 yards, 20 TD) had just 27 first-half yards on 12 carries. “This was a great win for us today,” Purchase said. “We all played well on defense and really shut the Morton offense down. We are very young but we all play very hard.” Voss would break off his 25-yard

scamper for six with 6:29 remaining in the third quarter for a 28-0 Hilltoppper lead. On the last play of the third quarter, Williams raced 33-yards for his third touchdown of the game for a 35-0 JCA lead after three quarters. With 4:14 left, junior Ja’Aire Mack scored from four-yards out to initiate the 40-point running clock and a 42-0 Hilltopper lead. The Hilltopper first team defense held the Potters to 100 yards of total offense. Glatz was held to 52 yards on 18 carries. With the Hilltopper reserves on the field, Glatz did break loose on a 35-yard scoring run to finish the game with 116 yards on 20 carries and the touchdown. “We are so young and it has re-

ally been nice to see the growth of our team, each week,” Jaworski added. “We graduated 18 starters from our state championship team. Only Connor returned from the Nasty Hogs. It has been another joy for me to see the strides our offensive line has made this season. “My two inside linebackers, that played so well today, our just sophomores. Aidan (Voss) and Jordan (Anderson) are also just sophomores. I am so happy for Kenyetta. To watch him play so well for us, in his first Class 5A playoff game.” The Hilltoppers will host undefeated Mount Zion (10-0) in a second-round game at Memorial Stadium, Saturday, Nov. 9. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
