Rialto asks for city contribution as ticket sales improve Income was 68 percent higher than anticipated in FY 2018

Joliet’s majestic downtown theater has had its fair share of financial difficulties in recent years. Now, the board of the Rialto Square Theatre is again asking the city of Joliet for a half-million dollar donation to keep things running, in an era that board members said is turning around. Valerie Devine, Executive Director Rialto Square Theatre, presented the theater’s financials to the city council this month.

During the Rialto’s 2018 fiscal year (FY18), which ended on June 30, the theater showed income at 68 percent higher than anticipated during the budgeting process. The theater’s board projected $1.7 million in income for FY18, but instead raked in $2.8 million, a number that Devine attributes to “the Seinfeld effect.”

The theater is still struggling to balance those numbers with overall expenses however. Budgeted expenses for FY18 were $2.1 million, but actual expenses came in at $3.2 million, representing a total loss in the budget of $406,487.

While that might sound grim, it’s part of an upward trend for the theater, which has faced scrutiny over the past several years for how it operates For the first quarter of the current fiscal year, the theater has pulled in $56,663 in income, but spent $649,507. While those numbers still show a deficit, the theater has been able to reign in expenses,

spending approximately $25,000 less on expenses than budgeted.

“We have continued to advance our community outreach with participation in numerous local events,” Devine said.

Those events included local music Mondays, the RTS Beer Bash, Paws on 66, and Star Wars days.

“We are encouraged by the complimentary comments by those long time and new patrons to the venue. We love to see the response of our guests as they enter the esplanade and rotunda for the first time, as they marvel at the beauty of our wonderful theater,” she added.

Ticket sales exploded in FY18 over the prior year. In 2018, the theater sold 44,116 event tickets, versus 18,990 in 2017, a 366 percent growth in sales. Gross sales in FY18 were $2.6 million, but the theater does not retain all that cash. For example, shows like Jerry Seinfeld represent a rental, where the theater only earns rental income and its associated expenses, while the reminder of the ticket sales revenue goes to the performer.

The theater also saw more than $182,000 in revenue through sponsorship and foundation revenue in FY18, including $15,000 in event sponsorships and $78,425 in memberships. The theater was also able to add cash into its coffers with sponsors, such as the First Midwest Bank entrance, and the Miller Lite box office lobby.

Board members said its all a sign that the theater is returning to its roots as a major venue and draw for visitors.

“We’ve made considerable progress, and I know that [the city council] has really helped us out with your contributions,” said Jeff Pierson, vice president of the Rialto Board. “We see a lot of you individually down there, enjoying the successes of the Rialto, and seeing other people who really enjoy it.”

Two years ago, the city had opted not to contribute an annual sum to the Rialto, but council members revised that decision after public calls to support the venue. The money contributed by the city is used to help balance the books and pay expenses.

Jim Roolf, Chair of the City Center Partnership, urged the council to continue their financial support of the Rialto as well as other City Center revitalization projects.

“It’s been kind of a bumpy road, so to speak, with the Rialto on some fronts,” Roolf said. “I think it has been very positive for downtown and certainly for the entire region, because the guests at the Rialto come from all over. It’s no question that it is, and continues to be, the jewel of Joliet, tarnished in the past perhaps, but polished again and poised for a bright future.”

The city receives monthly and quarterly financial statements from the theater.

“You guys have done an amazing job at rebuilding and reforming and coming back,” Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said. “I see you are on a great path, and we just want you to keep up the good work.

The contribution will be included in the city’s annual budget, which goes before the board for later this month.

Crest Hill Lions Clubs presents Children’s Advocacy Center with 120 blankets for abused children Blankets are used to comfort those affected by physical and sexual abuse

Members of the Crest Hill Lions Club donated more than 120 fleece tie blankets to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Last Thursday night at the Children’s Advocacy Center in downtown Joliet, the Crest Hill Lions Club presented the CAC with more than 120 fleece tie blankets that will be used to comfort children who have been affected by sexual and extreme physical abuse.

“We are all about helping the community out and try and stay local in all of Will County,” said Jason Donisch, President of Crest Hill Lions. “I think the kids will be happy with the blankets, and we really hope that this brings a big smile on their faces.”

The Club received the idea after seeing several social media posts requesting the blankets to be donated go give to the children in need by the Advocacy Center.

While the Crest Hill Lions organized, funded and made blankets themselves, the project was not possible without community support.

From the employees at the Joliet JoAnn Fabric store spending four hours cutting bolts of fleece to size, to the Creative Friends of Carillon Lakes, the Senior Student Council at Joliet Catholic Academy, members of Crossroads Christian Church in Joliet and Girl Scout Troops 71045 and 75227 in Plainfield to friends and family of Lion members, there were several people other than members who cut and tied the blankets.

“We thought this would be a great opportunity to give young children a sense of comfort and safety. It really meant a lot that we were able to provide that feeling to children who need it most,” said Madie Buss, JCA Senior Student Council President. “It was a pleasure making these blankets, and we are glad we were able to help such an amazing organization. As the senior class, we felt this would set an example of giving for the underclassmen to follow.”

John Dean, a 43-year member of the

Crest Hill Lions, spoke about the Club’s participation in the effort.

“It’s one of the best projects we’ve had that I’ve seen here,” Dean said. “It’s going to help a lot of people and a lot of kids which is fantastic, I’m very happy about it.”

The CAC was established in 1995 by Will County State’s Attorney James W. Glasgow as a 501(c)3 charitable organization in order to improve the integrity of all investigations into allegations of child sexual abuse.

“Thank you to the Crest Hill Lions Club for this tremendous donation of more than 120 homemade fleece tie blankets that will provide comfort to the sexually abused children who come to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center to find hope, healing and justice,” Glasgow said. “What makes this donation even more important is that the Lions engaged community organizations to craft these blankets. Their involvement expands awareness of the services provided by the center and provides additional warmth for the children who will be wrapped in these blankets.”

The donation was presented to Forensic Interviewer Jackie Lundquist, a 15-year employee of the CAC, where she has done approximately 3,000 interviewers.

She said the feeling of gratification of helping kids is what keeps driving her to do her job and help the children and families.

“The kids go from the family room to the interview room and they’re petrified, but as soon as you talk to them and ease their mind about reporting and telling your story you see them relax and open up to you,” Lundquist said. “I love giving them that opportunity because they are all miraculous people, I’ve loved it since day one and I still love it today.”

Lundquist added that sexual abuse is a taboo subject matter, but they are creating awareness and for kids to be able to talk about their story is one step in the right direction to ultimately help end this atrocity.

Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world, with more than 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members, and the Crest Hill Club is in its 56th year serving the community.

“Besides this, we do hearing and eye exams for low income individuals including both kids and adults who live in Crest Hill,” Donisch said. “We try to be involved in the community and in Crest Hill as much as we can, but this is one of those things where we are trying to branch out to everyone.”

Benet libero Hattie Monson is 2018 Voyager Media Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year

Benet Academy junior libero Hattie Monson made the alltournament team this season at the Wheaton Classic and Autumnfest this season, but did not receive tournament accolades at the Wheaton North Tournament.

It wasn’t that Monson had a poor showing at the event – it was that on the final day, she was simply a no-show.

Instead of playing with Benet, she was 1,800 miles away playing libero for the USA Youth National Team as it won gold at the NORCECA U18 Girls’ Continental Championship. Monson posted 37 digs and 19 serve receives overseas and was named both tournament’s best digger and best receiver.

When she was playing for Benet this season, the junior Notre Dame commit had 383 digs, 47 assists and 29 service aces and helped the Redwings to a third-place finish in IHSA Class 3A. For her efforts, Monson is named 2018 Voyager Media Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.

“I have been playing volleyball for a long time, but it helps that our block this season has been so consistent that they have put me in the best positions where I

know where to stand on defense.

I have had so much experience passing so many balls,” she said.

“The past two years, they have talked about being down state and they talk about what it is to be a Benet player, and I didn’t really understand that my freshman year, but as I get older, I understand how important these moments are.”

Benet Academy has had talent at the libero position over the years, but coach Brad Baker is not ready to place Monson near the top of that list.

Not just yet, anyway.

“When her career is done, we will look back then, but she is not done. She is unbelievable in serve receive, which is the most important skill,” Baker said. “She makes reads and understands the flow of the game and puts herself in a position to make those plays. People don’t give her enough credit for her speed and her ability to run down balls and completely give up her body.

“She is just a gym rat and she loves it. Those gym rat kids are the ones that you want on your side. She plays every day and barely takes a day off and when you do that, your instincts grow.

MADISON CUCHRAN, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH Sophomore libero tallied 541 digs, 78 service aces and 50 service aces for the Class 4A runner-up Trojans.

LUCY DUMFORD, DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH The 6-foot senior outside hitter is committed to D-I High Point University in North Carolina.

JILL HOOK, LOCKPORT Led the Porters with 395 digs and 51 service aces and also tallied 59 assists.

She was named All-SouthWest Suburban Conference as well as all-tournament at the Oak Lawn Spartan Invite. She helped lead Lockport to its first Regional Championship since 2011 and most wins (28) since 2011.

“Jill was a special player for the Lockport program as she was a starter in nearly all positions throughout her four years: Setter (Freshman), OH (Sophomore/Junior), OPP. (Junior), DS (Junior) and ultimately a Libero for her senior year,” said coach Nick Mraz. “Before the season, our serve receive was the biggest question in our offense and she stepped up to solidify our back row throughout the year. Her serve was an added bonus as her float would eat up many teams to get them out of system on a consistent basis.”

EMILY HOLBROOK, JCA The 5-8 senior outside hitter wproved that sub-6-footers can lead a team to a state medal. The Arizona State recruit 274 kills, 16 blocks and 337 digs on the season. Was named to the All-ESCC team “Emily has been a three-year starter and has been a go-to player in each of those years.

She has amazing jumping ability and plays like she is 6 feet tall,” said coach Christine Scheibe.

“I sometimes refer to her as the Energizer Bunny who just keeps going and going. Being a six rotation player, she is an asset to the team in both the front and back row contributing with her excellent passing, back row attacks, and defense. She will be attending Arizona State University on a volleyball scholarship where she

She is a four-year starter for the Trojans and helped the team to a second-place finish in Class 4A. She will play collegiately at St. Louis University. She was alltournament at Plainfield South, the Wheaton Classic and Autumn fest.

“She has been a steady, reliable force for us throughout her time in our program and is one of the primary reasons we advanced to the Elite Eight last year

and had another successful season this year,” said coach Mark Wasik. “She is the epitome of a coach’s player and consummate teammate. She leads by both example and with her voice and she has the fullest admiration of her teammates and coaches.”

NATALIE MITCHEM, BOLINGBROOK Senior Outside Hitter was a four-year varsity starter who converted from a three-rotation middle to a six-rotation outside hitter as a junior.

She posted 396 kills, 46 aces, 43 blocks, and 257 digs this season.

She is on the Under Armour All-American Watch List, Top 100 Players in the Class of 2019, She is SouthWest Suburban Conference MVP her sophomore, junior and senior season, and was unanimously voted to the 2018 Moldenhauer Classic all-tournament team.

She holds the school record in kills with more than 800 in her career.

“Natalie is the driving force that flipped our varsity program from a 7-21 record in 2017 to 23-9 in 2018,” said coach Molly DeSerf.

She will play next season at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. TAYLOR MORGAN, LOCKPORT Junior outside hitter paced the Porters with 213 kills to go with 21.5 blocks, 131 digs and 18 aces.

She was named a member of the 2018 AVCA Phenom List.

“Taylor was our volume hitter who often went six rotations to become a back row threat,” said coach Nick Mraz. “She was a leader not only on the court but off as her positivity was infectious when her team needed it most.”

BELLA RAY, JCA Junior was named to the alltournament teams at the Metea Valley/Oswego East Tournament and the Glenbard East Autumnfest as well as all-ESCC. She posted 260 kills and 102 blocks for the Class 3A thirdplace Angels.

“Bella has been a dominant middle hitter this entire season. We are a better team when she is in the front row because teams have a very hard time stopping her,” said coach Christine Scheibe. “She has a variety of different shots, and she has worked very hard over the course of the season to develop

even more shots by working on new angles and improving her footwork. She has kept her hitting errors to a minimum with a kill percentage of 46.3 percent.

She has set a school record for kills by a middle hitter. Bella has also been an excellent leader this year. As a captain, she has lead team activities and been a role model for her teammates.”

ZOEY SEPUT, MINOOKA Junior setter paced the young Indians with 860 assists to go along with 38 aces, 96 blocks and 263 digs.

She was all-tournament at Plainfield North and was first team All-Southwest Prairie Conference.

“This is her second year running our offense,” said coach Carrie Prosek. “She is a very talented setter where opponents have a very hard time reading where she setting. We love her competitiveness and leadership that she brings to the court.

Hands down the best setter in the area.”

KATIE SHOOK, PLAINFIELD CENTRAL The Alabama commit tallied 453 digs on the season to go along with 30 service aces and 46 assists.

MEKENZIE SMITH, PLAINFIELD NORTH Junior libero tallied 423 digs, 31 assists, 20 service aces and a 2.10 passer rating this year for the Tigers.

NATALIE STEFANSKI, JOLIET WEST Junior outside hitter was first team all-Southwest Prairie Conference and was all-tournament at the Peg Bryan Memorial Tourney, Glenbard West Invite and LW Central Autumn Knights Invite.

On the season, she posted 354 kills, 2298 digs, 29 blocks and 46 service aces.

LLY VAN EECKEREN, BENET Senior Creighton recruit tallied 741 assists, 161 digs, 115 kills, 70 blocks and 38 service aces in helping the Redwings to a third-place finish in Class 4A. She was all-tournament at Autumnfest and was named to the ESCC All-Conference team.

“She is the best blocking setter we have ever had,” said coach Brad Baker.

MADISEN WERDELL, MAINE SOUTH Hawks libero tallied 553 digs and 45 aces on the season.

Next comes Baby Step 2, which means paying off all your debt except for your house. This would include your car. During this time, you should temporarily stop any kind of investing and retirement contributions.

Once your mortgage is the only debt you have left, it’s on to Baby Step 3. This means you start saving money and growing your beginner emergency fund into a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

When that’s done, you can attack Baby Step 4 — investing 15 percent of your pre-tax income for retirement. In your case, that would mean re-starting the contributions to your 401(k).

of the top 10 percent of schools statewide that have no underperforming student groups.

The district’s other five schools – Troy Craughwell Elementary, Troy Heritage Trail Elementary, Troy Cronin Elementary, Troy Hofer Elementary and William B. Orenic Intermediate School - were designated as commendable, which is the second highest achievement level.

This is the first year the ESSA designations were issued, as required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA, which is a law that applies to all American public schools. It is designed to close

academic achievement gaps by recognizing students who need additional assistance and resources.

The designations are made by analyzing the proficiency tests PARCC, SAT and DLM-AA, as well as student growth, English language progress and chronic student absenteeism numbers.

“The ESSA accountability system provides a comprehensive evaluation of the work our school staff do to create student success,” Troy 30-C Superintendent Dr. Todd Koehl said. “We are very proud of our staff and students for their hard work and perseverance.”
