Families invited to Mother-Daughter Night Out Troy Craughwell School invites families in for Mother-Daughter Girls’ Night Out

Special memories were made at Troy Craughwell Elementary School’s annual mother-daughter dance on the evening of Sept. 28.

The gymnasium transformed into a dance floor, as children and mothers donned matching outfits for one evening.

“I think a lot of it is being able to come and get together with their children and then their other school friends and then the activities, as well,” said Stephanie Bross, a member of the Parent Advisory Committee.

This time around, the dance featured a “My Mini-Me” theme.

Members of the Parent Advisory typically meet up to decide upon it.

“I like to see my kids in their school environment,” said Debbie Morrissette, another member of the Parent Advisory Committee. “I don’t know what they do all day, so getting to see them in the cafeteria and in the classrooms is fun.”

Highlights captured throughout the evening included refreshments, dancing, and arts and crafts.

Sara Shutts said she is glad she and her 8-year-old daughter Julie decided to drop in.

“Julia is in third grade, and we had fun at Mother-Daughter night before, so we didn’t want to miss out,” she said.

The Shutts enjoyed eating cupcakes between bits of conversation. Julia said her favorite of the dance was the arts and crafts.

“That was really cute,” she said.

Sara said the dance does a good job of creating a space where parents can bring their children to meet up with their friends from school.

Morrissette said the event is important to parents like she.

“It just shows your kids that you are putting them as a priority in their life and that their education is important to you, but more so how they’re feeling [and] making them feel loved and cared for and supported,” she said. “Kids are in so many activities and [have] so much homework, and this is an hour-and-a-half to just focus on them. I think it’s really important to come.”

Morrissette agreed and went on to say children enjoy the time parents spend with them.

“Seeing that we take interest in [our children] means so much to them, as well,” she said.

Bernadette Wheet said she was excited to return to the event with her daughters, Chloe and Kiley.

“It’s Troy tradition, and it’s fun,” she said. “The girls have fun.”

This year was the Wheet’s second time attending Girls’ Night Out.

Bernadette said the dance does a wonderful job of providing a space for her children to have fun with their peers. “[Chloe] is just in kindergarten, so she doesn’t have people coming over,” she said. “We don’t have little ones by us really in our neighbor-

hood.”

This year’s dance brought in between 250 and 300 people.

“It’s something that’s very enjoyable for both us and the kid,” Bross said. “The involvement with the parents is unbelievable sometimes.”

Celebrating comic books, fantasy art and their fans Museum hosts Galaxy Expo for second year in a row

The Joliet Area Historical Museum was transformed Sept. 23 into a hub fit for fans and creators of comic books and fantasy art.

In its second year under its current name, the Galaxy Comic Book and Fantasy Art Expo took over the museum to create a space for people to come together.

From an artist demonstration to a live podcast taping and trivia contests to panel discussions, the convention featured a plethora of activities for people to enjoy.

“I think we have a nice, steady flow of traffic,” said Jody McQuarters, expo founder and organizer. ”There’s not a big mob scene at one time. It just steadily comes in throughout the day.”

The idea behind holding the expo started when McQuarters was helping the Joliet Public Library to put on its annual Star Wars Day. “I had so much fun with that, and I go, ‘You know what, I’d like to do my own comic book convention,’” he said. “After I figured out what I wanted was to keep [the experience] like it was when I was a kid; I put the

puzzle pieces together [and] I started seeking out the artists.”

The appreciation McQuarters has received from fans of his convention is amazing, he said.

“They said, ‘Wow, this is a great show,’ and word spread from there,” McQuarters said.

“They come back every year now.”

On average, the Galaxy Comic Book and Fantasy Arts Expo brings in between 200 and 500 people.

Attendee Lee Giernoth said he is glad he decided to come out for the convention with his family.

“We came all the way up from Lake Villa,” he said. “[My son’s] really excited about the superheroes.”

This year was Giernoth’s first time attending the expo.

“I am [a big fan of comic books and superheroes] just from being a kid,” he said. “The superheroes that I liked, [my son’s] really enjoying. [I’m] trying to get him connected with some of the stuff that I used to like and the toys.”

The expo featured more than 40 artists, writers and other special guests this time around.

Rafael Nieves, formerly of Marvel Comics, greeted fans and aspiring creators as they approached his booth.

“I love talking about comics and not only the media, but the business of it, as well as the technical aspects,” he said.

During his time with Marvel, Nieves worked on a book called

“Hell Storm,” which is a reimagining of the old “Son of Satan” comic from the 1980s.

“That was fun,” he said. “I did about six issues of that.”

Nieves picked up an interest in writing for comic books seeing the way his brother was drawn to reading them.

“I loved the idea of writing stories that bring people in and engage them, and I love writing horror because I like how you can take ordinary people, and put them in extraordinary situations, and watch the way they react,” he said. “You know, superhero comics are all about us being better than we are. Horror comics kind of show us at our very worst. I love holding up the mirror to society to ourselves.

It’s cool because you can do all kinds of emotional things with comics, and you don’t have to have a big action scene on every page. You can build excitement and drama and mystery and terror, and it’s fun. It’s fun manipulating the reader that way.”

Nieves encourages anyone who is passionate about entering the comic book industry to pursue it, and went on to say it’s a great time to get started.

“Publishing comics is infinitely easier than it was when I started, and I’ve been selfpublishing comics for almost 25 years,” he said. “If I had the resources then that young people do now to create comics, I’d be making them everyday if I could. It’s exciting.”

Joliet Central High School Marching Band in Chicago Thanksgiving Parade The Joliet Central High School Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Don Stinson, was accepted to perform in the 2017 McDonald’s® Thanksgiving Parade. The 2017 McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade takes place in downtown Chicago on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday November 23.

The parade is approximately one-mile long on

State Street and begins at Congress and moves northbound to Randolph. The parade can be viewed locally on WGN 9 Chicago or nationally on WGN America beginning at 8 a.m. on November 23rd. WGN America broadcasts the Parade coast to coast in over 73 million households. Along with the Macy’s day parade, it’s one of only three parades that are televised nationally.

“I’m extremely proud of the work that the students have done with the marching aspect of our program,” Stinson said. “Every band member should be proud of the work they have done. We are excited to represent our band, school, and community on National television this Thanksgiving!”

BY GENE POLICINSKI WASHINGTON – The power of the press rests in the ability of journalists to hold government accountable, to mobilize public opinion on matters that are important to individuals, communities or the nation, and to provide necessary information of value.

Notice in those words not a mention of celebrity content, mobile devices nor “aspirational” reportage that feels good without doing any good.

But also notice in those words the key to the future for newsrooms across the nation: A visible role in the daily life of the nation rooted in real benefit and sustained credibility.

Newsprint may not be the medium-of-choice today for many readers, and perhaps certainly not the one for the desired next generation of readers.

But the news organizations behind what certainly will be a blend of printed and electronic pages must be again the mediums-of-choice for that group, whether they be thoughtleaders in society, officeholders in government or voters.

The nation – our audience – needs facts, presented clearly, accurately and completely.

For those who are help rapt by the comings and goings of the Kardashians and turn away from discussion of policy in the Keystone Pipeline System debate: Well, perhaps it’s time to say “goodbye” and leave them to vacuous talking heads, unreal “reality” shows and the assortment of cable TV geek-fests that offer a chance to feel superior just by sitting on a sofa.

“Targeted circulation” indeed.

Let’s leave behind the prideful ignorant who proclaim little faith and demonstrate even less actual consumption of news, and target those readers and users who want news and data and informed decisions – and who will pay a reasonable fee to

get it.

Ok, not as easy to gather in and report out as feature items and single-interview chats. It means bucking the system to place journalists in seats where daily decisions are made and social issues discussed – from City Hall to church pews.

It means bringing the news of the day in new ways, but with the same old standards that separated opinion from fact, news pages from editorials and commentary from reporting.

The Newseum Institute’s latest State of the First Amendment national survey, published on July 4, showed that 70% of respondents disagreed with the statement that “overall, the news media tries to report the news without bias.”

To be sure, the change of bias has been leveled at journalists since the nation began – and was, in fact, welcomed by many in the first “journals of opinion” and later by media moguls making no pretence at publishing anything but “news” filtered through their own views.

But over time, and by dint of the hard work and credible reporting by tens of thousands of journalists – in newspapers, and later in radio, television and now online – readers, listeners, views and users gave their loyalty to news operations that brought them what they needed.

As emotional as one can be when waxing about ink-on-newsprint, it was the information that was printed with that ink, on those pages, that made newspapers strong and powerful – and that information was the stuff – not the fluff – of life.

Of course there is room for entertaining, uplifting stories and reports on that part of the day that makes us chuckle, smile or simply shake a head. But editorial decisions ought not to start and end there.

“Click-bait” ought not to squeeze out real debate.

“Metrics” ought not to rule over meaning.

And the challenge in thorough reporting on the county’s budget next year ought to mean finding a new way – perhaps through the new studies of gaming technology as applied to news reporting – of telling a complex story.

Decades ago, USA TODAY showed us how color weather maps and national sports rankings could be fun while still bringing needed information to commuters, gardeners and golfers – and while also reporting on AIDS, national security issues and unsafe military vehicles.

Consider that most news today still originates with mainstream media – and that the value for those aggregators was simply in finding a new way to package and deliver the content.

A simple text-and-photo site called Craig’s List wreaked havoc on the financial underpinnings of a massive industry just by finding an easier way to post and peruse the same information.

Cannot we collectively continue to find such innovation within newsrooms as well?

Journalists have learned many hard lessons over the last two decades: Nobody really loved us because of our nameplates, innovation was not just a good idea but a daily consideration on survival, and we no longer are the gatekeepers anymore between news makers and news consumers.

But in those tough, even brutal, decades, we’ve also discovered how to make our pages come alive – literally, via the Web – and found new ways to know about and be in contact with those interested in news and information.

To the old axiom about being “Clear, concise and accurate” those who have survived have added “responsive.”

The power of the press was, is now, and will be in the future, bringing consumers the news they need – and having the fortitude to seek and report the news they don’t even yet know they need, but will.

Ignorance and apathy is the challenge.

Credibility and necessity are the means to overcome those challenges.

Trail bridge erected at Whalon Lake Bicounty trail connection will provide a safer passage for path users trying to get from one preserve to the other

A DuPage River Trail bridge was erected Wednesday at Whalon Lake as work continues on a floodwater diversion channel being built at the preserve.

During a flood, the diversion channel will carry water from the eastern branch of the DuPage River to the 80-acre lake, which is part of a 249-acre preserve of the same name that is split between Bolingbrook and Naperville. Both the lake and the diversion channel will hold and slowly release the water back into the river through existing twin box culverts at the southwest corner of Whalon Lake.

“The channel is not designed to take 100 percent of the flood flow from the river, but instead begins filling when the river hits a certain flood stage,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer. “The lake was designed to accommodate a 10-foot rise in water elevation.”

The work began in July and is being performed by V3 Companies on behalf of Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Co., which already pumps groundwater from the adjacent quarry into Whalon Lake, the Bolingbrook Park District’s Hidden Lakes Trout Farm and the DuPage River.

Plans for the water diversion channel date back to the 1990s when the Forest Preserve acquired the depleted Barbers Corner Quarry, which had been

excavated since the 1960s, and converted it into Whalon Lake.

Plants, fish and fill material were added to the lake and it took a couple of years to fill with water before it opened in 2008 for public use as a recreational body of water.

As part of the agreement with Elmhurst-Chicago Stone, the flood water diversion channel has to include settlement basins to assist in removal of suspended solids along with fish catchment devices that will capture unwanted fish moving from the river during a flood. The lake also absorbs drainage water from properties north of Royce Road.

“Elmhurst-Chicago Stone was also required to make improvements to that drainage to improve water quality and aeration as part of the original agreement from the 1990s,” Schultz said.

A small portion of the DuPage River Trail section that loops around the lake has been closed since Sept. 18 as a result of the drainage channel construction and bridge installation. The trail is expected to open in a few weeks.

In addition to paying for the drainage channel and bridge, the quarrying company is helping to pay for a 1.25-mile extension of the DuPage River Trail that will be built along Royce and Greene roads. The trail extension will connect Whalon Lake to the

Joliet West scores in final 11 seconds to beat upstart Plainfield Central, 21-17, on homecoming

Jaxon Aubry and Drew Farrell connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass with just 11 seconds left in the game, as the Joliet West Tigers stunned the Plainfield Central Wildcats, 21-17, on Friday night.

“I thought our defense played outstanding when we really needed them to step up tonight,” Joliet West head coach Jason Aubry stated. “It really is incredible what our kids did tonight on both sides of the ball. They just stepped up and made plays to win the game.”

Though the Tiger offense will get the headlines with the last second touchdown, it was the Joliet West defense that was the star of the game.

After both Joliet and Plainfield failed to do anything with their opening possessions of the game, Senior Alex Schott was

able to open the scoring and put the Tigers up, 7-0, with a 22-yard pick six. Thanks to Schott’s score, and the overall play of the Joliet West defense, the Tigers took the seven point lead deep into the second quarter.

However, after a series of turnovers by the Joliet offense, Plainfield Central was able to produce 10 unanswered points.

Quarterback Justin Divelbiss’ touchdown pass to Mathews Morganfield and kicker John Rukujoz’s 23-yard field goal helped the Wildcats take a slim, 10-7, lead into the halftime break.

“They (Joliet) did a great job of bouncing around and mixing coverages,” Plainfield Central coach Jon Pereiro said. “They play a very active defense with some really great athletes and are very well coached. Minooka earns fifth win of the season

The Minooka Indians earned their fifth win of the season and a likely trip to the post season after cruising past Romeoville 3812 Friday night overcoming four turnovers in the win.

“It wasn’t pretty but we got the win and I suppose that is all that counts for the moment,” said Indian head coach Terry Combs as the teams shook hands at midfield. “We shot ourselves in the foot with untimely penalties and the fumbles tonight. A win is a win but if you’re a playoff team these mistakes don’t happen. We will get back to work Monday and clean this up before we see Joliet West.”

The Indians pounded the ball all night with their running game which was highlighted by their misdirection plays that got their runners to the edge of the Spartan defense for big gains.

Minooka opened up a 31-0 lead by halftime finishing the game with 458-yards of offense but struggled with four fumbles on the night losing three of them.

Senior tailback Owen Kapple uncharacteristically fumbled three times, twice in the first half ending lengthy drives.

For Romeoville, their offense was held in check until late in the game when they got a late score.

The Spartan offense could only muster 87 yards of rushing with 39 passing yards against a

stout defensive front for the Indians.

Romeoville senior Sir Muhammad provided a spark late in the third quarter with a 40-yard pick six to get some points on the board but it was one of only a couple highlights for Romeoville on their homecoming night.

“We had our mistakes tonight and to beat a 4-1 team we have to play our perfect game which we didn’t,” said Spartan head coach Oliver Gibson. “They say you learn more from your losses than your wins and this season is like getting a Harvard education to that fact. We are learning a lot and that is we need to tighten up the screws on both sides of the ball if we want a positive outcome.”

Pierzynski to highlight Brown&Gold Night For the second consecutive year, a World Series Champion catcher will headline University of St. Francis’ Brown & Gold Night. A.J. Pierzynski will be the guest speaker at the 41st annual event, which will be held in the Pat Sullivan Center on Wednesday, November 8.

A two-time Major League Baseball All-Star, Pierzynski was a member of the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox. During the White Sox’ run through the postseason, he drove in nine runs and hit three home runs.

Pierzynski was a career .280 hitter with 188 home runs, 407 doubles and 909 runs batted in over 19 seasons. He played for seven teams, including the Minnesota Twins (1998-2003), San Francisco Giants (2004), White Sox (2005-2012), Texas Rangers (2013), Boston Red Sox (2014), St. Louis Cardinals (2014) and Atlanta Braves (2015-16). He is currently an MLB analyst on Fox.

Pierzynski joins an impressive list of Chicago professional sports personalities who have served as the featured speaker at the Brown & Gold event. That list includes former White Sox teammate Frank Thomas (2013), Cubs catcher David Ross (2017), Cubs executive vice-president/general manager Jed Hoyer (2016), Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster (2014), Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX quarterback Jim McMahon (2012), Denis Savard of the Chicago Blackhawks (2011), Fergie Jenkins of the Cubs (2008) and Chicago Bears’ Mike Ditka (1982, 2007) and Dick Butkus (1980).

Other notable speakers at past Brown & Gold events were longtime Marquette University basketball coach and network television analyst Al McGuire (1977, 1987), basketball coaching legend John Wooden (1978), twotime Super Bowl MVP Bart Starr (1994), former DePaul coaching legend Ray Meyer (1979), college baseball’s all-time winningest

coach and USF’s own Gordie Gillespie (1996) and Olympic wrestler and coach Dan Gable (2002).

The annual fundraiser begins with a cash bar at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the program at 8 p.m. The event will also include a silent auction.

FOOTBALL The USF football team opened up MSFA Midwest League play with a dominant 42-19 victory over St. Ambrose.

The Saints (1-3, 1-0 MSFA Midwest) received offensive contributions from many new faces,

including Aaron Ellis (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove) who threw for 329 passing yards and four touchdowns. Perre’ Brian Barbarin (New Orleans, La./Saint Augustine) rushed for a team-high 100 yards and Re’John Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Franklin Roosevelt) totaled 10 receptions for 113 yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns.

USF was also stout on defense, totaling three takeaways, five sacks, and 11 tackles for loss, while limiting the Bees (2-3, 0-1 MSFA Midwest) to just 296 yards of total offense.

St. Ambrose broke the scoreboard with a field goal on its opening drive, but the lead was short-lived.

St. Francis quickly converted on a pair of touchdown passes to take a 14-3 lead. Ellis led a seven-play, 75-yard drive that culminated with a 22-yard touchdown strike to Zach Moreno (Le Grand, Calif./Le Grand). Then, after Alex Zlomie (Wilmington,

Ill./Wilmington) converted on a strip-sack that was recovered by Mason DeLong (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bourbonnais), Ellis quickly capitalized by throwing a 31yard touchdown to Jean Pietrzak (Westmont, Ill./Westmont).

USF’s defense limited SAU to a field goal on its next possession and the Saints extended their advantage with another strong drive. The key play was a 53yard strike from Ellis to Pietrzak, which eventually set up an 11yard toss from Ellis to Williams, putting the Saints ahead 21-6.

In the second half, a Lexus Jackson (University Park, Ill./ Crete-Monee) 24-yard punt return set USF up with good field position. An Ellis-Ray Vallot (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) connection put St. Francis in the red zone and Barbarin capped off the drive with a four-yard touchdown run, the first of his career.

“Our kids really played their hearts out and never gave up, but we just played against ourselves far too much tonight,” Pereiro said. “We played well on the last drive, but the number of errors leading up to that moment were just to much to overcome.”

On a night where the Joliet offense turned the ball over six times and failed to put up any points through the first 47 minutes of the game, everything finally clicked on their last possession. Jaxon Aubry and Drew Farrell expertly and efficiently led the Tigers 80 yards down the field and scored the games final points with just 11 second remaining, sealing the stunning victory for Joliet.

“It is no secret that we had a tough night offensively, but at no point were our kids ever fazed,” Aubry said. “We never thought about our struggles or turnovers, we just kept our next play mentality and kept fighting. Our next game is going to be a tough test so we’re going to have to be ready and hitting on all cylinders from the start if we want to win.

We are just going to keep cranking and do what we do.”

Joliet West (4-2) will look to extend their winning streak up to four games on the road next Friday night at Minooka, while Plainfield Central (3-3) will look to right the ship at home against Oswego East at 1 P.M. on Saturday afternoon.

We have a household income of $73,000 a year, and were wondering if we should go ahead and start Baby Step 4, investing for retirement, instead of paying off the debt.

Joliet, Redeemed Connection Ministries offering snow removal assistance Mayor Bob O’Dekirk recently announced that the City of Joliet, working in conjunction with Redeemed Connection Ministries, will offer a program to assist with residential snow removal for Joliet senior citizens age 65 and over and Joliet residents with disabilities.

The City is asking any local residents, church groups, or students needing community service hours to contact Reverend Adrian Heath at Redeemed Connection Ministries to sign up. In the upcoming weeks, Redeemed Connection Minis-

tries will begin accepting requests for assistance from any Joliet senior citizen or Joliet citizen with disabilities who would like to participate this winter.

“This is an exciting program that myself and District 4 Councilwoman Bettye Gavin have been working on for some time.

I think it is a great idea to lend a helping hand to our senior citizens and people with disabilities who may struggle during the winter months. I want to thank Reverend Heath for taking a leadership role with this, and I am really excited about moving this program forward” stated Mayor O’Dekirk.
