he village hall grounds in the Shorewood Towne Center played host to pumpkin decorating, skeleton making and hay rack riding on Sunday’s sunny afternoon.
The inaugural event, held in partnership with the Shorewood Lions Club, also featured a costume contest for children up to fifth grade. Karin Kirchman brought her 9-year-old daughter to the fest and said they both were having a good time. “I’m always up for a free event, and it’s fun for the kids,” she said.

FEMA funding uncertain for the ongoing project with $50K pricetag By Stewart Warren For the Sentinel
The Shorewood trustees officially decided Oct. 22 to remove a huge pile of junk deposited on private property during the April flooding. Despite the price tag of about $50,000, they voted unanimously to haul away the wooden deck, the hot tub and the other debris. At about 12 feet high and 40 feet wide, the monstrosity has been dubbed “The Hoover Dam” by Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman. The trustees want to make sure the stuff is long gone before the river rises again. If they don’t haul it away, the next round of flooding – and there’s sure to be one someday – could cause even more problems for the residents who live on Valencia Drive and other low-lying streets along the river and just southwest of Illinois 59 and Jefferson Street. Although the trustees had discussed the issue during their first meeting in October, they learned something new on Tuesday: The Federal Emergency Management Agency was not promising to pay for some of the clean-up. “(FEMA) did not want it in See JUNK, page 23
