It was a cool and crisp Saturday night as hundreds of folks dropped into Cene’s Four Season Park to celebrate a fall favorite.

Oktoberfest returned to Shorewood on Sept. 29.

The annual Bavarian-style festival first kicked off in 1976 in

the village. While the festival was cancelled after a few years, it was eventually brought back by popular demand in 2013.

The event featured German food and drink, a beer garden, polka music, a Masskrugstemmen contest, and raffle and door prizes.

Entertaining the crowd in the afternoon was Chicago-based German brass band Ed Wagner’s Lustige Blaskapelle, followed in the evening by the Lounge Puppets.

The event was sponsored by the village and Christopher B. Burke Engineering.

Short term rental ordin. on hold Discussions on how to regulate short term rental on hold

Discussions on how to regulate short term rentals within the village boundary of Shorewood are on hold.

On Sept. 25, the village board tabled a discussion on the issue, which was first brought before the board earlier in the month.

At issue is a proposed ordinance to amend the zoning code with respect to short term rentals.

The proposal would first define a “short-term rental” as a singlefamily dwelling, or a residential dwelling unit in a multi-unit structure that is rented for a fee for less than 30 consecutive days and would then prohibit such a rental.

The Planning and Zoning Commission did not recommend the ordinance for approval.

Members said the problem the amendment seeks to solve is limited and infrequent.

The issue was first brought to the board via the Citizens Advisory Committee, where residents said at least one home in town was being utilized as a “party house,” allowing weekend rentals that brought in bands and party buses on weekends, and ultimately engaging in behavior that disturbed the peace.

However, some trustees argued that current ordinances on public nuisances could already be utilized to deal with the issue of noise produced by short term rentals. Trustee Anthony Luciano asked for the issue to be tabled while the effort to refine the ordinance moves forward.

“I want to ask that we table this and give it a chance for further review,” Luciano said. “We haven’t done anything with it and didn’t have the chance to do anything with it up to this date. So, I’d like to table this and have further review and bring it back at a later date.”

Homes honored for beautification Homeowners receive honors for efforts to beautify Joliet

By showing great pride in their property, neighborhood, and community, others will take up the spade to replicate their efforts and expand the beauty of Joliet.

The honorees were lauded by way of proclamation by the mayor and council.

Eleven area homeowners have received honors for their efforts to beautify Joliet.

In September, the City Council honored the local homeowners for the extra pride and care they put into their properties.

Project Acclaim/Neighborhood Hero Program president John Zalanka told the council that the local recognition organization was first founded in Joliet in 1985 and began issuing awards to local homeowners since 1987.

“This goes to homeowners who, through efforts in their yards, have done outstanding visual appeal work, so it’s a curb appeal award for showing pride in their home, their neighborhood, and their community,” Zalanka said. “Their homes look good; all the homes look good.”

Zalanka added that there are multiple benefits to property landscape improvements, in addition to curb appeal.

to beautify properties can have a domino effect, encouraging other areas to be competitive by driving the desire to improve adjacent properties.

Each year, the organization locates and proclaims citizens who take pride in their property, neighborhood, and community.

The Neighborhood Hero Program honorees have shown outstanding pride in their curb appeal via horticulture, landscaping, and visual beauty on their property.

TROY CRONIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students benefit from school program Troy students benefit from first year of beforeand after-school program Six Troy Community School District 30-C schools began before- and after-school programs this school year. The programs are offered in each student’s own school.

Troy Cronin Elementary School is one of them. Principal Jill Howard said her school currently has 15 students in the

program, and that number is growing.

“It’s great for our students because of their familiarity with the building,” Howard said, “and it’s convenient for parents because it’s their home school.

Children don’t need to take a bus to the after-school program. Instead, they just walk down the hall.”

The program Troy uses is Ivy League Kids. Its Senior Director, Kris O’Connor, said students usually work on their homework during the first portion of the after-school program. Staff

help the students if they need it and check their homework when it’s complete.

The students then have a snack and relax and go outdoors for some physical activity, such as playing kickball, tag or running

bases. There are also STEM activities included in the program and character development lessons.

“We’re just really thrilled to be part of the program and to meet the needs of the community of Troy,” O’Connor said.

Lincoln turns tide in debates against Douglas in Galesburg

BY OWEN W. MUELDER FOR THE REGISTER-MAIL OF GALESBURG The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are among the most important events in the United State’s history.

The seven debates were conducted throughout Illinois in the summer and fall of 1858. Not only significant in their own time, the debates have since been recognized as an ultimate example of our political process which has continued throughout the centuries as most office seekers nationwide debate each other every campaign season.

Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were respectively the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the U.S. Senate. The primary question these men discussed was whether slavery should be extended into the nation’s territories.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he loathed slavery and looked forward to a time when it would disappear. He also maintained that it should be forbidden from being established in new states that desired to join the Union. Douglas defended the concept of “Popular Sovereignty,” whereby the people who resided in western territories should have the right to decide if slavery would be allowed.

The slavery question was so important then that no other political issue was raised by either candidate during the debates.

Public oratory was popular in the 19th century; both candidates often used harsh language and outspoken mud-slinging to characterize each other. People attending these contests also shouted out derogatory comments and catcalls toward both men. Spectators came from every part of Illinois to hear the speakers and newspapers throughout the country published detailed accounts.

The first debate, in Ottawa, was held on a blisteringly hot day in the third week of August. Most historians

agree Douglas put Lincoln on the defensive; consequently, the “Little Giant” appeared to be the winner.

However, at the second contest in Freeport, Douglas was put on the defensive. Lincoln asked Douglas how he could reconcile his “Popular Sovereignty” stance with the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which ruled that slaveholders had the right to introduce slavery into the territories. If Douglas responded that he supported the Dred Scott decision he would please Southerners, but if he stood by his “Popular Sovereignty” position, most Southerners would never forgive him.

His reply that day has since been dubbed the “Freeport Doctrine.”

Douglas responded to Lincoln’s query by saying the people who settled a territory would determine whether or not slavery could exist there. Put back on his heels, he hoped his answer would satisfy all parties, but it failed.

The third debate, in mid-September in downstate Jonesboro, was poorly attended. In southern Illinois, slavery was popular with many citizens. Lincoln finally came out more forcefully in Jonesboro, but he faced a hostile crowd and was characterized by Douglas as a radical. This debate is considered by most scholars a somewhat inglorious affair. The fourth debate, in Charleston, was on neutral ground for both men and is remembered as a stalemate.

On a chilly day at Knox College’s Old Main in Galesburg, the fifth debate on Oct. 7 drew more spectators

than any of the other six contests.

Lincoln scholars are nearly unanimous in describing this debate as the one where Lincoln found his legs, displaying a confidence he had not shown before.

Lincoln knew Galesburg was an abolitionist town, known for harboring fugitives on the Underground Railroad. Standing erect and selfassured on a stage above the crowd, Lincoln spoke for the first time at length about the immorality of slavery.

“I confess myself as belonging to that class in the country that contemplates slavery as a moral, social and political evil,” he said. Paraphrasing Henry Clay, he accused Douglas of “blowing out the moral lights around us.”

Lincoln biographer Benjamin Thomas described the Galesburg contest as the turning point for Lincoln. One Boston newspaper reporter described Lincoln as “eloquent and bold.” Lincoln was so successful emphasizing this moral theme in Galesburg that he repeated it at the sixth debate in Quincy.

Douglas, often a heavy drinker, was described as “tight”and spoke slowly, hammering home his contention that decisions about slavery should be left to local and state governments. In the final debate, at Alton, which was a rehashing of the previous points, Douglas, his voice fraying, seemed worn down. An energetic Lincoln said the Declaration of Independence applied to all men, not just some, and the slavery question was between right and wrong.

In November, the state Legislature re-elected Douglas by 54 to 46, but the debates catapulted Lincoln’s name and reputation across the nation; the Republican Party nominated him for the presidency two years later. His election victory proved to be a significant watershed in American history.

If defensive battles are what gets your blood boiling for Friday night fall football games under the lights, Joliet Central and Plainfield South was a dream come true.

With a 3-3 close-knit ball game headed into the half, Plainfield South had just enough offense to score once in the third and once in the fourth for a 17-10 victory that put them at five wins on the season, which is good enough for a playoff berth.

“Our defense just made big plays all night long,” said Plainfield South coach Bill Bicker.

“Central did a great job in both of their schemes tonight, we knew we weren’t going to get that many big plays against them, but we found a way to get a few and we came out on top.”

From the start, Bicker knew that having its third string sophomore quarterback Nicholas Schultz in the game would be a challenge for his offense.

“We lose our quarterback [Joey Passo] and were down to [Schultz] which was tough, but the best part of the game tonight is that this kid didn’t flinch one bit,” Bicker said. “He didn’t have big eyes, wasn’t afraid of the moment and he really rose up tonight.”

South (5-1, 5-1) got on the scoreboard to start off the game

with a 25-yard field goal by junior kicker Benjamin Ortiz, giving the Cougars an early 3-0 lead.

At the beginning of the second quarter, football was put on the backburner for a period of time as a scary head on collision between junior receiver Jaylin Berry and a South defender left the Central sideline irate.

“We held him out of the rest of the game for precaution to get further evaluation on a concussion,” Central coach Brett Boyter said of Berry. “I wasn’t sure if that player should still stay in the game at that point, but he did and that wasn’t my call to make.”

With Central (2-4, 2-4) soon retaliating to tie up the game with a field goal of their own, both teams knew they would have to scratch and claw to come out with the win in the second half.

“The penalties in the second half really hurt us,” Boyter said.

“Our effort and attitude was just as intense as it was in the first half, but we had some miscues that lead to the final outcome.”

The Steelmen got the second half going, however, with a first play 80-yard pitch and catch from senior quarterback Jared King to sophomore receiver Andrew Murphy.

That 10-3 lead would soon evaporate as South was paced by junior running back Jaylin Eison on a seven-yard touchdown run in the third, and a game winning one-yard touchdown run in the

“I saw that Central stacked the box so I wanted to wide out the play a little bit,” Eison said. “I wanted to make sure I got my stiff

arm out as I crossed the pylon so the defender couldn’t bring me down beforehand.”

With just three weeks remaining on the schedule, the Steelmen

will play host to Plainfield North at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Joliet, and the Cougars will be at Plainfield East to collide with Bengals at 7 p.m. Friday in Plainfield.

Troy Girls’ Softball Team finishes 3rd in State The Troy School District 30-C Girls’ Softball Team took 3rd in State at the Class AA IESA Championship Series in September. The games were played at Champion Fields in Normal, IL. “We are very proud to have made history for the Troy softball program,” said Coach Kelly Papesh. “Winning a Regional Championship was something that we had never done prior to this season. A Sectional Championship, a trip to the IESA State Finals, and bringing home a 3rd place trophy only makes the season that much more special. It was definitely a fun and memorable journey.

“I commend the girls and all of their heart and dedication this season. These girls take care of each other on the field as players and teammates and off the field as friends. It really is a great bunch of young ladies to be around.”

Papesh added that she and Coach Kaylie Davis are grateful for all the support the team has received during their season, including from Troy administration and staff, parents and families and extended friends.

“We were honored to represent the Troy 30C District,” she said.

Troy Director of Athletics and Activities, Meagan DeGroot, said the team was impressive.

“The girls have amazing talent, and they are leaders on and off the field,” she said. “I have never seen a more exciting game than the Sectional Championship game. This team makes every play count, and I could not be more happy for them and what they accomplished this season.

Coaches Papesh and Davis were great leaders for the girls, and I am so excited to see what the future holds for the team next year and for those players going into high school.”

Golf Team SPC Conference Champs Team makes district history as first JT Girls Golf team to win the SPC Conference

The team made district history as the first JT Girls Golf team to win the SPC Conference.

The Joliet Township High School Girls Golf Team were the 2018 SPC Conference Champions, the first time in district history, at the Inwood Golf Course on September 27, 2018. The team is coached by Joliet Township High School educators James Grzetich, Jonathan Murray, Heather Suca and Natalie O’Connell.

Coach Grzetich said, “At the end of last season, the girls really made a commitment to themselves and the team. These girls all participated in off-season lessons, summer camp, fitness days and played competitive golf, always with the goal of capturing the SPC Team Title.

Grzetich said, “It was truly

a special day for our program and I could not be more proud of this whole group of girls. It has been a great season to this point and now we will try to accomplish our next goal of advancing as a team to IHSA Sectionals.”

With 0:17 left in Friday night’s classic East Suburban Catholic Conference battle at Joliet Memorial Stadium, Benet senior quarterback Colin Gillespie went under center for the play of his Redwing career.

With 12.5 seconds left, Gillespie (12 of 18, 185 yards, 2 TD) found 6-foot, 6-inch, 225 pound Nico Kasprzycki (7 catches, 91 yards, 2TD) in the end zone to give the Redwings a 19-13 lead.

After Redwing placekicker Tony Benish’s extra-point boomed through the uprights, the Redwings

led 20-13.

Benish’s ensuing kickoff was returned 25 yards by JCA’s Keenan Hailey to the Hilltopper 45 with five ticks left on the clock. Redwing junior defensive back Tommy O’Malley then intercepted JCA’s quarterback Jordan Alvarez’s lastgasp pass to seal the 20-13 Redwing ESCC victory.

“I just wanted to take us down the field to win the game,” Gillespie said. “Our offensive line was outstanding, during our one-minute, game-winning drive. They were outstanding the whole game. Jack Norgle really stepped up big for us when I was injured for a few plays.

We really wanted to win this game.

It’s a lot better to be 4-2 than 3-3 at this point in the season.”

“We have practiced the gamewinning play all week,” Kasprzycki said. “It felt great to make the gamewinning catch and have this play that we execute in practice come

through for us in a game. Always a great game when we play JCA. Big win for our goal of making the playoffs again.”

Friday’s pregame storm that swept through Joliet scared away a large portion of the expected huge homecoming crowd at Memorial Stadium, however, the tiny contingent that came to Joliet from Lisle were rewarded for their support of the Redwings.

With 1:26, gone in the game, JCA’s Keenan Hailey streaked 63-yards for the first score of the game.

Hailey, who came into the game with an area-leading 891 yards would finish the night with 210 yards on 34 carries with the touchdown.

Senior placekicker Tony Trabold’s extra-point gave the Hilltoppers a 7-0 lead.

With 2:19 left in the first quarter the Redwings answered with a 68yard scoring strike from Gillespie to senior wide receiver Luke Fraska.

Benish’s PAT tied the contest at 7-7.

With 23 seconds in the first half, Trabold would drill a 23-yard field goal, to give the Hilltoppers a 10-7

lead at the break.

Benet senior linebacker Mike Wymer and defensive back Jack Cooney, made the defensive play of the game with 5:00 left in the third quarter.

Joliet Catholic (3-3, 2-2) had a 4th-and-1 at the Redwing 16-yard line.

Wymer and Cooney, hammered Hailey at the line of scrimmage forcing the loss of down.

“Great feelings went through me, when I saw Nico make the gamewinning catch,” Cooney said.

“Great win. On the big fourth down play, I saw Hailey bounce wide and then cut back in. I was able to swipe his legs, out from under him.”

After Gillespie completed a 19yard pass, to Cooney (three catches, 28 yards) at the Redwing 35, backup Jack Norgle replaced the injured Gillespie.

Norgle (4-for-6, 52 yards,TD, INT) completed the 84-yard Redwing scoring drive when he hooked up with Kaspzrycki, from 10-yards out for six, with 1:23 left the third quarter. Earlier in the drive, they hooked up on a 25-yard comple-

tion.

Benish’s conversion hit the upright and the score remained Benet 13. Joliet Catholic.10.

With 8:20 left in the game, Trabold tied the game at 13 with a 35-yard field goal.

Benet’s leading rusher on the season, senior Ben Hickey, again led the Redwings with 37 yards on 11 carries. Hickey also hauled in a 25-yard pass reception from Gillespie.

Hilltopper fullback Nick Iannantone, rumbled for 98 yards on 21 carries.

Don’t houseflip hundreds of miles away DEAR DAVE, I follow your advice and live on a budget, but it’s really hard to save up for a down payment on a house because property is so expensive here in New York. My family in Indiana says I should buy a cheap property there, then fix it up and sell it to get the money I need. I’m not sure how I feel about this idea.

DEAR ADAM, I think you’d be smart to back away from their idea. Your family loves you and wants to help, but this is a bad plan. Fixing and flipping properties is a hands-on business. There’s no way I’d try something like that from 700 miles away.

It would be a nightmare! When you take on that kind of work you need

to oversee every single step of the process. You’re also keeping an eye on the help you hire to make sure they’re doing things right. Think about this, too. You can’t just find a house and expect to get a good deal. Professionals who flip houses for a living often look at dozens of different properties to buy just one.

It’s not an easy way to make

money, and it’s not something I would advise doing from a distance. I know it can take awhile to save up cash for a down payment on a home. But don’t let a case of house fever push you into making a bad financial decision.

Have you considered getting a part-time job for a while to bring in some extra cash?
