White Oak Library hosts Author Fest in Crest Hill more than 50 authors gather to meet area readers by mark gregOry editorial director

For book lovers, going to the library to peruse some titles is a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Throw in the fact that the readers have the ability to meet more than 50 authors and discuss the books and it makes up one of the biggest events of the year for the White Oak Library District. The third annual Author Fest was held last Saturday at the Crest Hill branch and was designed to showcase local and regional writers.

“Attendees can come out and mingle face to face with dozens of authors and look at the books, buy the books or just talk to them about becoming an author and how they did it,” said White Oak Library District Director Scott Pointon. “Everyone that is into reading, I think, has a secret desire that someday, they will write a book. So, they love to talk to people that have succeeded in writing a book and getting it published and interact one-on-one.”

The event evolved from one old idea and a new one.

People enjoyed themselves at those events, but over the course of five years, it ran its course,” Pointon said. “We had always wanted to do a local author fair, so we just combined the two ideas and this is our third annual White Oak Author Fest and it is first and foremost a local author fair and this year, we have more than 50 regional authors and some of them are from towns right around us and others are a little further away in Chicagoland. They are all close

enough that they can drive in for the event.”

This year’s theme was Crime and Punishment – fitting with the Crest Hill branch located in the shadows of Stateville Prison.

“If you look out the back window of the Crest Hill branch, you see Stateville Prison, so Crime and Punishment is a good theme for us.”

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow had originally been scheduled to speak on the Drew Peterson case, however, some recent developments in the case made it a topic he was unable to speak on, so Assistant State’s Attorney Peter Wilkes filled in and entertained and informed the crowd. Wilkes was followed by a special keynote author Jeff Mudgett, the great-great grandson of H.H. Holmes, the notorious serial killer from ‘The Devil in the White City’ fame. He was also the co-host of History Channel’s ‘American Ripper’.

Mudgett was promoting his book Bloodstains – the tale of his spiritual journey to find his roots, accept the family secret and his fascination into obsession with Holmes and the story behind one of America’s most notorious killers.

Mudgett captivated the crowd with tales of his family story, his book, the TV show and future plans chasing the remaining secrets of H.H. Holmes.

Joliet police in search of info about Oct. 17 murders two murders on same day remain unsloved

The first occurred at 12:21 a.m. when shots were reported near an alley off the 800 block of Cora Street. Responding officers found Dearis J. Evans, 24, had been shot while sitting in

a parked vehicle. A 19-year-old man who had been with Evans was also at the scene, but was not injured.

Evans, of Lockport, was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

About four-and-a-half hours later - at 5:07 a.m. the body of Shaianne P. Williams, 25, was discovered about 3.5 miles away near California Avenue and Rosalind Street. Williams, of Joliet, had “trauma to (her) body,” police said.

There were no immediate indications if the homicides had any connections to each other or another recent slaying in Joliet.

On Oct. 10, Jesse B. Hannah, 33, was shot to death at Krakar and Elgin avenues. A 19-year-old man was also critically injured in that shooting incident, which remains under investigation. Detectives have asked any residents or businesses from Nicholson Street to Broadway and Ruby to Moran streets with surveillance video from 11 p.m. Oct. 16 to 1 a.m. Oct. 17 to call police at (815) 724-3020.

Anyone with information can also anonymously call CrimeStoppers at (800) 323-6734. CrimeStoppers offers rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Who taught who when Stanley sat down with local Girl Scouts?

At first, I wondered if Shorewood’s Girl Scout Junior Troop 71519 reached out to acknowledge all the Thin Mints I’ve purchased over the years.

But they needed a writer to help them earn a Scribe Badge and since Stephen King and J.K. Rowling weren’t available, the troop turned to the local newspaper.

So on Oct. 17, I met with Abby, Nora, Mya, Elaina, Laurie, Katie, Zoe and Ava - all age 10 - to go over what it takes to make an article.

I explained how a local news story is similar to a non-fiction book report or very recent history assignment with a goal of telling the reader who, what, when, where and why.

After that the girls had a chance to ask each other questions and then ask me questions.

And I learned as much as some of the questions as the answers.

For example, the blue, red and yellow “Superman” ice cream can also be called “Captain Marvel,” if you prefer a female superhero.

And there may never be satisfactory answer why Goofy wears clothes and Pluto does not, but if Pluto decided to put a scrunchy on his head, he’d be a “VSCO girl.”

I’m barely up on what a scrunchy is, but if you ever want to practice what it’s like communicating in a country without a common language, have a group

After several disastrous attempts, the helpful and polite young ladies finally dumbed it down enough for me to understand VSCO is similar to Facebook without likes and comments. Often the girls using VSCO wear “millions of scrunchies.”

I’ve no idea what media platforms we’ll be using when these Girl Scouts are looking for careers, but Shorewood has several aspiring environmental reporters and some interested in “oddball local news.”

Meanwhile, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are teaming up for the Fall Food Drive. Bags will be dropped off on Shorewood porches the weekend of Oct. 26 and picked up Nov. 2 for donation to the Restoration Food Pantry.

When the Oct. 15 volleyball game between Minooka and Plainfield Central ended, the scoreboard said the visiting Indians had won 27-25, 25-17.

The real winner, however, was Addy Boggs. Addy is a student at Circle Center Grade School in Yorkville and has been diagnosed with Batten Disease CLN3 — a very rare, genetic disease that to this point has no cure.

Of the many symptoms of Batten Disease, one is vision loss, which she is already starting to experience.

For the past seven years the Minooka girls volleyball team has partnered with Shorewood H.U.G.S to raise money to help grant a wish and put a smile on the face of people in need.

“This has been seven years and when we started we were only on wish 200,” said H.U.G.S Founding Member Laura Charland. “Addy is wish 841. Events like this allow us to touch so many, and not just pediatric.”

The organization was started

by Charland and four friends as a way to give back.

“We all live in Shorewood but all of our kids went to different grade schools and we decided

the girls themselves went door-to-door themselves to get donations for raffle baskets, charland said. it is teaching them to help people in their community. we wanted to help people in our community,” she said.

All of the money raised stays within a 20-mile radius of Shorewood and while H.U.G.S main fundraiser is the annual Chocolate Ball, which will be held Feb. 1 at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Joliet, the help both Minooka and Plainfield Central give to the cause is enormous.

“The girls themselves went door-to-door themselves to get donations for raffle baskets,” Charland said. “It is teaching them to help people in their community.”

The players enjoyed getting involved in raising funds for a good cause. “As the two teams come together, we want to make whoever we are doing the wish for feels really special,” said Minooka senior Samantha Zurawski. “We want to give them a big, warm wel-

come when they walk into the gym and raise as much money as we can for them and their family because what they are going through is hard. We want the one goal to be special. When we heard (Addy’s) story, we just wanted to come together for her.”

The two schools are two of the oldest in the Southwest Prairie Conference as well as historically two of the best, so the game between the two programs is always circled on the calendar in both locker rooms.

For the past few years, they have partnered in the Hits for H.U.G.S game, coming together for a cause before doing battle on the court.

“Working with Plainfield Central has really helped the cause because (Plainfield Central coach Erik Vogt) and I believe in the same things,” said Minooka coach Carrie Prosek.

“This is a great event and we are so happy to join with them because it used to just be us.”

“When we are able to help an organization like Shorewood H.U.G.S, it makes the environment great,” Vogt said. “Anytime you can bring two teams together that are always competing for championships and compete for something that is much more important like our community, it is a great feeling.”

The Tigers, who entered the game one game behind Plainfield South and Plainfield East, needed the win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

A South win would have locked up the Southwest Prairie Conference East Division title, however, the West win gives the Tigers a shot at the title and a playoff berth, despite a best-case 4-5 overall record.

The Cougars will finish out the regular season against Romeoville, Plainfield East will host Joliet Central Steelmen and West will travel to Plainfield Central. The three opponents are all 1-7.

Wins by all three would result in a tiebreaker, which is determined by fewest combined points in head-to-head games.

With 36 points allowed, West owns the tiebreaker over the Cougars (49 points) and Bengals (52). Both South and East would be projected to be in the playoffs based on a 5-4 record and the number of wins by opponents.

West used momentum of senior night to make sure it remained in the playoff picture.

“We came into the game wanting to protect the football and play responsibility football on defense,” said West coach Bill Lech. “I think we were confident that we’re able to run the ball and it was just a total team effort tonight.”

in the first quarter, but the Tigers were stingy the rest of the game.

A 32-yard field goal by senior Connor Halla cut the Cougar lead to 7-3, and an interception by senior cornerback Kinsyn Shelby, one of three interceptions by the Tigers defense on the night, crushed any momentum the Cougars had.

“Small mistakes, turnovers and we just couldn’t finish drives tonight,” said South coach Bill Bicker. “West played really well, Bill is a great coach and they were just more prepared than we were tonight.”

Two possessions after the Tiger interception, a 4-yard end-around by senior receiver Samuel Mono gave the Tigers their first lead of the game with 2:10 left in the first half. Another field goal by Halla put the Tigers up 13-7 at the half.

A Tiger safety on snap over the head of the Cougar punter in the end zone was only scoring in the third quarer and put the Tigers up 15-7.

To start off the fourth, a two-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Trent Howland (27 carries, 216 yards) extended the Tiger lead to 22-7.

“At the end of the day it was a win for us,” Howland said. “We had to really come out here and show everybody what we can do.”

Mono again followed the Howland touchdown with his second score of the day on a eight-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brenden McGee that put the game out of reach for the Cougars with just 3:50 left on the clock.

“Tonight just wasn’t our night,” said Cougar junior quarterback Nicholas Schultz. “A loss is a loss but it’s also a lesson, we just have to finish strong next week.”

When January rolls around, Vince Carter will become the first player in National Basketball Association history to play in the league in four different decades.

In 2016, Chicago native Kevin Garnett retired from the NBA as a 15-time All Star, 2004 NBA Most Valuable Player and 2008 NBA Champion.

In 1995, those two, along with Terrance Roberson, Ron Mercer and Stephon Marbury made up the Street & Smith’s High School All-American First Team. The five of them went on to combine for more than 50 years in the NBA. On that same list of the top 20 prep players in the nation was Joliet’s Gary Bell.

The 6-foot, 4-inch high school standout was on the Street & Smith Third Team that season.

He finished behind Garnett as Illinois Mr. Basketball, and went on to play at the University of Notre Dame.

After a myriad of injuries and misinformed decisions, Bell retired from playing professionally in 2003 without ever reaching his goal of playing in the NBA. Bell has spent time as a high school basketball and football coach, administrator and special education coordinator in North Carolina and Virginia.

Now, he is ready to devote his time back to his game and his community — his Joliet community.

Bell will host his Skill over Politics Elite 80 Skill Evaluation Showcase Nov. 2 at Romeoville High School – where his grade school teammate and lifelong friend Marc Howard is the head boys basketball coach.

The event includes players from the high school graduating classes of 2022-2028.

The girls event runs noon-2:30 p.m. and the boys runs from 3-5:30 p.m.

“From my vantage point, there were certain things I was and wasn’t prepared for and it was where I was with my maturation,” Bell said. “That sixth through 10th grade year when you are reliant on your parents, that is when you need the assistance from people that can get your name out there. It is all about the relationships and I am trying to develop relationships so they

feel empowered, that they have someone in their corner that wants to see then win.

“I will be that beacon of light and that standard of excellence that student athletes, parents, coaches and administrators can come to and get honest, reliable feedback. I am looking to give unbiased assistance because too many look at what they can get out of it versus how they can help people.

I have had opportunities, made mistakes and bounced back and I want to come back and share that with Will County so they don’t make the same mistakes.”

Understanding why Bell would choose to hold his event in the community he came from rather than the one he lives in, takes an understanding of what Joliet means to Bell.

“Moving to Joliet in 1988, I was not happy that we moved from North Carolina to Chicago and then we had just moved again from Chicago,” Bell said.

“But, Dirksen Junior High School gave me confidence in myself and gave me the belief that I could be more than I thought I could. They allowed me to be who I am today and for that reason, I will always be indebted to the Will County area. I made mistakes and the community always embraced me.

“Home is where your heart is and my heart will always be in Illinois, Will County, Joliet, IHSA – that is who I give kudos to building me. If I can give something to give and share to help somebody’s life, I want to do that.”

Other than an extraordinary talent, what Bell has to offer started with the Steelman.

Bell scored 2,140 points and grabbed 1,250 rebounds for the thencombined Joliet Township program.

Out of several offers, Bell chose the University of Notre Dame because coach John MacLeod had spent 18 years as an NBA head coach prior to returning to college with the Fighting Irish.

Bell never planned to be at Notre Dame past his sophomore season.

The plan was to turn pro, but that plan began to unravel before he left Joliet.

“My junior year (of high school), I injured my back and we kept that under wraps,” Bell said. “So, the end of my junior year and my whole senior year, I played with a herniated disk in my back. I really wasn’t even practicing my senior year. It really changed the

way I played the game. My junior year, I was averaging three to five dunks per game and my senior year, that really fell off because my athleticism was taken away. That is the reason I didn’t play football my senior year.”

Bell still had a fantastic senior season for the Steelmen and led them to a fourth-place finsh in Class AA. “I graduated June 2, 1995 and I had a five-hour surgery June 3. I went to Notre Dame not even having rehabbed from the surgery and I was ready for practice on Oct. 1 and that is an unbelievable four-month turnaround on a herniated disk. That wasn’t realistic and my back flared up again.”

His back injury, combined with a muscle virus, cost him 14 games his freshman year, but he was where he wanted to be by the end of the campaign.

“It was one set back after another. I finally started the last six games of my freshman year, averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game in those last six,” Bell said. “Everything was starting to go well. I was getting past the back and I was learning to play without a 40-inch vertical jump.”

Then came his sophomore year.

“My sophomore year, I was starting, I was explosive and I got my mojo back. We had just dominated on our trip to Italy and I remember the day Ron Artest was visiting Notre Dame.

I will never forget it,” Bell said. “I put on a show that day and at the end of the scrimmage, I had the opportunity to take a three from the corner and I didn’t. I drove in because I wanted to put the finishing touches on it and a walk-on ran in front of me and I dislocated my entire ankle.”

He returned from the ankle injury to play in 11 games and average doubledigit points, but on February 16, 1997, the injury bug hit Bell again – this time bigger than ever.

In a 75-70 Big East loss to Villanova, Bell tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

“I had just checked back in the game, I was stepping over a Jason Lawson screen and I tore my ACL,” Bell recalled. “That destroyed my world – it took me years to mentally bounce back from that. It was a difficult time. I went in there with the intention to play two years and go pro.”

Instead of heading to the NBA after his sophomore season as he had envisioned, Bell and the Irish parted ways in an orchestrated scenario that saw him suspended and then released

“I was damaged goods and it came down to business and Notre Dame didn’t want to appear to be cutting ties – so they suspended me for violating team rules. That was an agreed upon thing that we had talked about and we said and they released me,” Bell said.

“I couldn’t do what I was brought in to do and coach MacLeod’s job was on the line. People never knew this truth because I was embarrassed. I felt like I let everyone down. I didn’t realize until recently that I had no control over those injuries and that what happened doesn’t make me less of a basketball player or a person.

“I had so much momentum going into college and I wanted to go up more and more, the only way to go was down. I pretty much reached my pinnacle in high school.”

In two seasons at Notre Dame, Bell played in just 27 games, averaging five points and 1.7 rebounds a game.

With his days in South Bend behind him, Bell entertained several top-tier programs, including returning to Illinois to play for Jimmy Collins at University of Illinois-Chicago.

Ultimately, he chose North Carolina State and enrolled. However, having to sit out a year because of transfer rules

and turning heads in a summer Pro Am League, he ended up at DivisionII North Carolina Central where he could play immediately.

Before he ever suited up for the Eagles, Bell played in Italy, which unknowingly violated NCAA eligibility rules.

So, while he did get his degree from NC Central, his college playing days ended at Notre Dame.

“I was forced to live a basketball hustler’s life. Play a little bit in Holland, a little in Italy, in the ABA a little bit and in some Pro Am Leagues and it was a rat race,” Bell said. “My daughter was born in 2003 and that year, I retired as a professional player.”

His daughter, Alary, is now a 6-2 freshman already getting college looks and Bell feels the need to help her and other players like her to get the instruction, on and off the court, that is needed.

“To be the best dad for her, I need to immerse myself again in basketball,” Bell said. “And for all these kids, when you have somebody that says, I made mistakes and that is what makes me who I am, they can see that.”

This doesn’t have to mean you give up on a dream. It might mean you change the processes and methods you’re using—especially if what you’ve done in the past hasn’t worked out well. Part of being successful in life, and in business, is having the ability to recognize when something isn’t working and make changes. You sound like an intelligent, caring young woman. But honestly, there’s probably not much chance someone fresh-out-of-college will have a lot of influence with her mother when it comes to things like this. It might be

a good idea if she talked to one of her friends or relatives a little closer to her own age. I mean someone with a little more life experience. If she’s in a good church, she could even talk to her pastor. In the meantime, maybe you could talk to someone like this and explain what your mom is going through. Ask them to approach her, and see if she’ll listen and be willing to accept some new ideas. You’re a good daughter, Renee. Show your mom all the love and support you can. It sounds like she needs it right now.
