Alicia Guerrero, of Romeoville, knows the pain of losing a child to violence.

So, when the time came to recognize the lives lost to domestic violence as part of Will County Take Back the Night and its 20th anniversary vigil and march against violence, she said she needed to be there.

“I came out for my daughter,” she said. “Her and I were attacked in 2014 by someone she met on Facebook. He was a guy and he became obsessed with her, and then he came to my home and shot us.

She was killed, but I survived. I’m here for her.”

Will County Take Back the Night held its 20th annual vigil and march against domestic violence last weekend at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Joliet.

Stacey Dillard, co-chairperson for Will County Take Back the Night, said the organization’s efforts are geared toward making a difference in the lives of others.

She said the goal is “to bring awareness and hopefully that we don’t have to add a new name to the list of women who lost their lives to violence.”

Karli Johnson, the event’s keynote speaker, described one evening that occurred seven years ago during her junior of college when she went walking on campus by herself at 3 a.m. Johnson said that walk wasn’t the night of her rape as many might assume, but it’s a very telling account that depicts the emotions she experienced in the aftermath of that terrible event.

Noting that she did what every adult told her as child not to do, Johnson said she did what every adult, every college, every pamphlet, every flier tells every female what not to do to avoid sexual assault.

“It was three months after I was sexually assaulted in my own home by my roommate at Northern Illinois University,” she said. “I will never forget this certain night, just like I will never forget the night of my assault. That night, I was sick of the insomnia, I was sick of feeling uncomfortable, unsafe and fear

in my own home.”

That night, Johnson knew she could never live in her home any longer.

Johnson said she remembers walking past the commons on campus, sitting on the stairs and laying back in the grass.

“I looked up in the sky,” she said.

“I remember searching so hard, just to see the stars. I wished I was dead. I wanted to be in those stars.

I wanted to be far, far away from this place.”

Johnson said the pain that she felt is no longer consuming her to

the extent it had initially.

“Today, I’m an educator, I’m a speaker, I’m an activist, I’m a storyteller and above all else, I’m a survivor,” she said. “I’ve shared my stories from L.A. to New York City, from Portland to Austin, from Vegas to Chicago and back and our small town communities.”

Guerrero said she believes the messages of the keynote speaker to be true, and is relieved to know that her pain will eventually subside, as did Johnson’s.

“Oh, it was perfect,” she said. “I mean it really helped me to feel

that I’m going to be OK one day.”

Guerrero said recognizing domestic violence awareness month means a lot to her.

“It means everything to me not only because of my daughter but because of myself as well,” she said. “It shows me that I’m not the only one, and there are so many other people that are being hurt everyday. Hopefully, one day it will all stop.”

Dillard said the turnout for Will County Take Back the Night has increased in size year after year, and is playing a significant role in bringing visibility to matters concerning domestic abuse within the county. “[I] can’t say a number, but you see in just the number of people— the sheer number of people that attend the walk—each year, we have to get a bigger venue,” she said.

On average, Will County Take Back the Night raises between $7,000 and $8,000 each year.

Dillard said more money was raised as part of the organization’s 20th annual event than in years past. Those funds will be divided between five organizations that help victims of domestic violence, in addition to a scholarship program.

Wiers, who is now director of school partnerships and an assistant professor at Lewis University, said Mike Phelps, grandson of Jack Phelps, who is in the photograph, donated the photo from his family archives. Troy Middle School was constructed on land purchased from the Phelps, and its baseball field is named “Phelps Field.”

Community Foundation awards $90K in grants grants awarded to 11 area nonprofits at fall reception The Community Foundation of Will County announced that it has awarded Community Partner Grants in the priority areas of health, education, human services and the arts at the organization’s recent fall reception.

Community leaders, foundation donors, trustees and other friends joined representatives from the recipient organizations at the reception Oct. 5 to celebrate the distribution of the grants and learn more about how they will be used to sup-

port the projects and initiatives of the various recipient organizations.

“For the second year, we invited those who have donor advised funds with us to help fund grants,” said Kathy Cawley, grant committee chair.

“Through their generosity we are able to increase our total impact by over 65 percent, adding over $35,000 of their support to our $55,000, for total grants awarded of $90,221.”

Nonprofit organizations serving Will County apply for grants through the Community Foundation’s annual Community Partner Grant program. In 2016, with more than $264,000 of funding requests received from 26 organizations and with exciting work happening in our com-

munity, the Board of Directors had difficult decisions to make.

In total, 11 area nonprofits makeup 2016 grant recipients.

They include Camp Fire Illinois Prairie, Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Joliet, Farmworker & Landscaper Advocacy Project, George Werden Buck Boys & Girls Club, Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, Northern Illinois Food Bank, One Hope United, Senior Services Center of Will County, The Cancer Support Center, Trinity Services, and Will-Joliet Bicentennial Park.

Since its inception in 2006, the Community Foundation has built its assets to more than $3.2 million and awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to nonprofit agencies serving the residents of Will County.

ZOnta club OF JOlIet tO HOst FestIVal OF culture To benefit local service projects that will empower women, the Zonta Club of the Joliet Area has announced plans to hold a Festival of Culture Oct. 24.

The event is scheduled to take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jacob Henry Victorian Ballroom, 15 S. Richards St., Joliet. Locally based restaurants will be on hand to provide guests a small tasting of cuisine from around the world.

Food tastings will be provided

by Mama Onesta’s, Little Saigon, Mashallah Mart & Restaurant, Pepe’s, Aisha’s Southern Cuisine, Al’s Steak House, Traditions, Cheesecakes by James, and Mi-

lano Bakery. In addition, Hollywood Casino of Joliet is providing door prize raffles of two guest stays at the Hollywood Casino Hotel and a $150 gift card for Joliet Final Cut Restaurant.

Joliet Township High School to hold make-up placement testing for class of 2021 Joliet Township High School announced that it will hold make-up placement testing Oct. 22 for current eighth-grade students planning to attend Joliet Township High School next year.

Students who were absent for the Explore placement test recently administered at their school or who attend a parochial school should participate in the upcoming make-up testing. The make-up test will be administered at Joliet Central High School, 201 E. Jefferson St., in Joliet from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

This placement testing is open to all incoming freshmen attend-

ing both Joliet Central and Joliet West high schools who have not taken the Explore placement test.

Students should use the auditorium entrance on Eastern Avenue to enter the building and should bring two No. 2 pencils and a calculator.

Joliet Township High School students who miss this makeup testing date will be tested on registration days in January and will not be able to register until the placement test is complete.

The school district added that waiting until January may affect elective choices.

Shorewood residents hopped to Cene’s Four Seasons Park last weekend to get a taste of what Oktoberfest offers.

The lagers were flowing with foam-topped beers at the annual Shorewood Parks and Recreation event, which featured live musical performances, food and fun.

Katie Fitzpatrick, a recreation event coordinator for the village of Shorewood, said Oktoberfest was designed to please all those who attended the event.

“It’s a good time for residents and other people from other areas near here to come out in early fall and enjoy themselves,” she said.

The evening got underway with the sounds of polka bands and switched to rock music toward festival’s end.

Amy Cerny, of Lockport, was in attendance for the festivities with her husband and their daughter.

She said she likes what Oktoberfest had to offer.

“The music’s good,” she said. “[My daughter] likes to dance and run around and stuff.”

Cerny was enjoying the different types of beer for sale at the festival.

She said she was pleased to see that Oktoberfest is a family friendly event.

“I like that we can let her run around and burn some energy,” she said.

Meghan Fasano, of Joliet, was enjoying the live entertainment.

She said she enjoys the sounds of German music.

This year was Fasano’s first time attending the Shorewood festival.

“I saw it on Facebook,” she said.

“It said something about it, so we came out.”

Fasano said she has a German background and is excited to celebrate the traditions of her heritage.

“It’s the reason why we came out to Oktoberfest because it’s a German tradition,” she said.

Richard Curtain, of Shorewood, was one of many local residents in attendance at the Shorewood festival. “I just like being out,” he said.

This year was Curtain’s first time attending the event.

Saying that he too has a German background, Curtain said Oktoberfest does a good job of showcasing the traditions of his culture.

Jennifer Fagan, of Shorewood, also attended the festival for the first time. Hearing the polka band perform was another first for her.

“It’s not bad,” she said. “I don’t normally listen to this [music].”

Fagan added that she could see herself attending the festival again next year.

This year, beer lovers were able to clink their glasses under the shelter of a marquee, which in the event’s past has welcomed as many as 2,000 festivalgoers.

“We just wanted to have as many residents come and enjoy themselves in the park as we can,” Fitzpatrick said.

Line between fate & choice there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition

BY JASON FLORIN Bugle columnist A basic part of my morning routine involves starting the coffeemaker and then choosing the day’s coffee mug. The cabinet displays a great variety of sizes, shapes and colors to pick from.

As I scan my options on this particular fall morning, I notice a red and blue emblem peeking through from the back row. I pull it forward and see it’s a Chicago Cubs logo, and this day just happens to be the opening game of the playoffs.

BY JASON FLORIN Even though I haven’t used this mug in months, during which time the team has won the most games in baseball on their way to a division title, today it feels like they cannot possibly win unless I choose their mug. I can almost feel the stars aligning as fate draws me to select the cup that will assure the team a victory.

So, I succumb to the delusion.

In a classic episode of the TV show

“The Office,” boss Michael Scott explains that he is not super-stitious, but he is a little “stitious.” Even if we are rational and level headed in most of our daily encounters, there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition. We cross our fingers for luck, avoid walking under a ladder or even pump a little extra gas to make sure the last three numbers don’t read 6-6-6.

The concept of superstition is that we believe we can control events that are really outside of our control. These magical beliefs become stronger if the outcome happens to go our way. When the Cubs won their game the night I used that coffee mug, I made sure it was the only thing I drank out of for the rest of the weekend. see CHOICE page 7

McGuire: Stateville decision made without input of workers On Oct. 7, the Rauner administration announced plans to close the F House at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, released a statement last week expressing dismay with the governor’s decision.

“We learned this morning in a Chicago Sun-Times op-ed that Gov. Rauner plans to close F House, the roundhouse at Stateville,” McGuire’s statement read. “Stateville is a maximum-security prison, and F House is where maximum-security offend-

ers who pose threats to staff and other offenders are housed.

“I later learned that the governor plans to move all the offenders in F House — of whom there are 347 today — to other buildings at Stateville and to other maximum-security state prisons, of which there are only two, Pontiac and Menard.

The governor wishes to do this in six weeks’ time.

“Public safety and the safety of prison employees must be our highest priorities. Yet the governor made the decision to close F House and

set this aggressive timeline without talking to Stateville’s front-line workers, the members of AFSCME Local 1866. These are the men and women who walk the cell blocks, encounter offenders face to face, know best the conditions of the facility, and risk their lives to keep us safe.

“I urge Gov. Rauner to immediately seek Local 1866’s input before proceeding. We need safe communities and safe prisons. To move abruptly and unilaterally could risk both.”

The irony of superstition is that our misguided effort at greater control only leads us to have less control in our lives.

Numerous research studies suggest that when we believe that we steer our own lives – known as an internal locus of control – we feel better, perform better and experience greater success.

We also take responsibility for our actions, rather than chalking it up to fate or bad luck.

we see our lives as a rudderless ship, tossed whichever way the wind and currents decide.

This lack of power – known as an external locus of control – is associated with higher rates of depression, lack of self-esteem and lower life satisfaction.

These beliefs also lead to stepping back from important life situations, since it feels as if we have no influence over the outcome. By recognizing that we have choices to make, as well as how important those choices

are, we can create a meaningful life. Yet when it comes to the areas we cannot change, it’s equally important to accept that we don’t have total control.

So you can keep the quirky routines that provide a small sense of connectedness, just as long as you don’t take them too seriously. After all, the best way to avoid tempting fate is to take control of it.

P.S. If the Cubs don’t win it all this year, you can’t blame me – I’m still using the same mug.

Heading into the cross-town matchup with rival Joliet Central, there was more at stake for Joliet West than just city bragging rights.

With five wins in their pockets, the Tigers were all but assured a place in the IHSA playoffs, but a sixth win would guarantee that spot for only the second time in school history, but also the second time in three seasons.

West earned that win with a 40-0 win over Central.

“We clinched and that is the biggest thing,” said Joliet West coach Jason Aubry. “It was 47 years ago when Ray Klootwyk was the head coach in 1969 and West was 7-1-1 and that was the last time they reached six wins.”

West rode the right arm of sophomore Jaxon Aubry, who was 19 of 22 for 246 yards and four touchdowns for the game.

He missed only one of his 16 first half attempts for 200 yards.

While many of the passes were only a few yards from the line of scrimmage, Jaxon Aubry did find Johnny Holman down field for a pair of scores.

Holman had four grabs for 103 yards, including touchdowns of 29 and 39 yards.

The other two touchdowns went to Omari Ferguson, who ended with 10 catches for 115 yards and the two TDs. “We have come to rely on them,” Jason Aubry said. “We are in the mindset now that is not, what bad will happen, but what are our kids going to do. Johnny stood out. What he can do vertically is great and Omari coming across the middle – that is his thing right now.”

The win was also the fifth in a row for Joliet West after opening the season 1-2.

Saints win on last second field goal Sophomore Grayson Barnette’s (Lenoir, N.C./ West Caldwell) 24-yard field goal with one second remaining in the game lifted University of St. Francis to a 2421 victory over Davenport University in nonconference football action Saturday afternoon at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

With its second straight win, USF improved to 3-4 on the season.

Davenport (4-3) suffered its first setback in four weeks. Saturday’s game marked the inaugural meeting between USF and Davenport, which is in its first season of intercollegiate football competition.

With under a minute to play and the score tied at 21, Davenport forced a USF punt that Nate Couturier returned 34 yards to the Panthers’ 44-yard line.

On the second play of the ensuing possession, junior Josh Woodard (Zionsville, Ind./ Zionsville) intercepted a pass near midfield and raced down the far sideline until being pushed out of bounds at the Davenport 3-yard line.

Two plays later, Barnette connected on a 24-yard field goal for

the first game-winning kick of his career.

USF trailed 14-0 after one quarter as the result of Davenport scoring drives covering 63 and 80 yards, capped respectively by a 7-yard pass from Hunter Krause to Couturier and a 2-yard Kyle Shurlow run.

The Saints got on the board early in the second quarter when junior Don Butkus (Dyer, Ind./ Mount Carmel) found sophomore Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./ Peoria) in the corner of the end zone from 17 yards away.

Davenport scored three plays later on a 50-yard scoring strike from Krause to TC Wells with 12:18 remaining in the second quarter.

From that point on, the USF defense held the Panthers scoreless. After allowing touchdowns on Davenport’s first three possessions, the Saints forced six punts and two turnovers the rest of the way.

Sophomore Jordon Smith (DeWitt, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run late in the second stanza to make the score 21-14 in favor of the Panthers at halftime.

The only touchdown for either team in the second half came early in the third quarter when Butkus hooked up with junior Lexus Jackson (University Park, Ill./ Crete-Monee) for a 17-yard touchdown completion.

Smith finished the game with 97 yards on 16 carries, good for a 6.1-yard average per attempt.

Butkus was 22-of-33 for 164 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

He connected with Jackson seven times for 61 yards and a TD. William Gist gained 109 yards on 18 attempts for the Panthers.

Krause completed 19 of 29 attempts for 208 yards, two touchdowns and two picks.

Couturier had 102 yards on nine catches in addition to his 34-yard punt runback.

Senior Tim Smith (Oregon, Ill./ Oregon) made two tackles-forloss and a sack. The sack was the 17th of his career, bringing him to within a sack-and-a-half of the USF all-time record. Junior Dekota Doerr (Metamora, Ill./ Metamora) collected a teamhigh 10 tackles to go along with an interception and a forced

WOmen’s sOccer A goal in the 73rd minute broke a 2-2 deadlock and lifted No. 21-ranked Cardinal Stritch University to a 3-2 victory over the University of St. Francis women’s soccer team in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday night.

With its third straight loss, USF (5-6-1) fell to 4-4 in conference play. The No. 21-ranked Wolves remained undefeated (8-0) in CCAC action and improved to 11-2 overall.

Cardinal Stritch’s Jamie Karch found the back of the net twice less than a minute apart early in the game to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

USF got on the board in the final minute of the first half when senior Leslie Rueda (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) scored off an assist from senior Yessica Reyes (Joliet, Ill./ Joliet Central). The goal was Rueda’s third of the season.

After falling to No. 8-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) College 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21 in the day’s first match, the Saints lost to No. 18-ranked Madonna University 25-17, 25-22, 25-23.

With the two losses, USF fell to 18-10 on the season.

Georgetown and Madonna improved to 22-4 and 24-5, respectively.

After splitting the first two sets against No. 8-ranked Georgetown, USF built an 11-10 lead in the third set before the Tigers rallied for a 25-19 win.

Georgetown jumped out to a 7-3 edge in the fourth set and remained on top the rest of the way to win the match.

Local tennis players headed to state Local tennis players enjoyed a successful weekend at the sectional tournament.

Eileen Carney of Joliet Township claimed the sectional seingles title for the third-straight season,

claiming the title at the Plainfield South Sectional.

Carney beat Neuqua Valley’s Veena Murali, 6-1, 6-1, in the finals. Tomi Jo Mansell and Mary Kate Buchheit placed first in the

doubles bracket, beating Neuqua Valley’s Hanna Beck and Hannah Neuman 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 for the title. Lockport’s Kaitlyn Graves and Brianna Hillock were third and will also advance to state.

A win would likely get JCA a match-up with the regional host Wildcats, the No. 3 seed in the sectional.

Joliet Central is the No. 18 seed in the Romeoville Sectional. The Steelmen will face No. 15 Bloom in a play-in game at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, with the winner facing No. 2 seed Lincoln-Way East the next day.

“No matter what draw we were going to get we are going to have to beat a quality team to win the regional,” said Central coach Al Mart. “My guess is we will play HF first (who is playing well right now) and if we get by them we will face a good Lockport team.”

Financially speaking, she has about $150,000 in Certificates of Deposit, money market accounts and savings bonds. Is there a better place she can invest her money?

ANONYMOUS DEAR ANONYMOUS, Certainly there are other investment vehicles that will make much more money than CDs, money markets and savings bonds.

However, at your mom’s age people aren’t generally investing for the long haul, unless they’re investing it for their heirs.

If she’s comfortable with her finances, I’d suggest just leaving things alone.

Don’t try to force her into something new. At her age she may still have bad memories of the Great Depression and a negative perception of the stock market.

In a case like that, mutual funds might make her fearful.

I wouldn’t take the chance of robbing a 95-year-old lady of her peace to try and do the “proper” thing with money.

However, if she’s agreeable to the idea of doing a little better with her money, you could start by moving a little into growth

stock or balanced stock mutual funds. But do something like this only if the change won’t upset her and leave her fretting over her money.

If you have $5,000 in debt but you make $150,000 a year, stop worrying, pay off your debt, and save up for a great wedding.

If you make $28,000 a year but you have $30,000 in debt, then you need to have a really minimal wedding.

Anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 would be reasonable in that kind of situation — and even then it’s going to be tight.

lation to your income, the smaller your wedding expenses should be. A $32,000 wedding would be ridiculous for someone with a $28,000 income. But $28,000 is a below-average income, so you shouldn’t reasonably expect an average wedding in terms of cost.

Honor Flight Chicago recognizes Shorewood woman Ceil Severns was among 107 veterans who took ceremonial trip to u.S. capital oct. 5 SUBMitted BY JoLiet AreA coMMUnitY HoSpice “It was like a dream.” That was how Ceil Severns of Shorewood described the feeling she had after being recognized by Honor Flight Chicago earlier this month.

More than 100 veterans of Word War II and the Korean War were presented with a day trip to Washington, D.C., for a day of honor.

Severns, who joined the U.S. Marines in 1944, was one of two female veterans who took part in the Oct. 5 Honor Flight.

The day began with donuts, coffee and entertainment by the Legacy Girls. The group, similar to the Andrew Sisters, sang music of the 1940’s. Severns said she knew all the words because her family regularly listened to the music on the radio. She enjoyed singing along with the group before boarding an airplane on its way to the nation’s capital.

After joining the Marines on her 20th birthday, Severns was stationed at Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, California. She worked in the office at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and that is where she met her husband, Merle Severns.

He was coming back from his tour in the South Pacific, and Ceil said she was the first “lady” Marine that her husband ever saw.

Ceil said it was love at first sight.

They got married just three weeks later and had two children.

The couple traveled all over Europe and were stationed in California, Guam, Germany and Maryland.

Merle was in the military for 33 years; six years in the Marines and the remainder in the U.S. Army.

He served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam. After Merle retired, the couple headed back to Ceils hometown of Joliet.

Ceil used the word “marvelous” numerous times to describe the sights. She said the capital is full of history, adding that she was happy to see the parents of young children allowing them to learn the history of the country by visiting these monuments.

One part of the trip that amazed the Shorewood resident was when Honor Flight volunteers presented her with a plaque honoring her husband during a ceremony of servicemen standing at attention and singing “God Bless America.”

On the return to Midway Airport later that evening, the veterans were welcomed by military personnel, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, ROTC members, a band, and of course family and friends. Ceil said she had to pinch herself to make certain she was actually living through this wonderful day. She said her sister’s family were there, along with staff and volunteers from Joliet Area Community Hospice and her caregiver, Paula Korycki. The wellwishers were holding signs and posters welcoming her home.

Marguerite Kronberger, chaplain at JACH, was instrumental in Ceil’s application for the Honor Flight.

“It was an outstanding event,” Kronberger said. “Ceil had tears of joy, and was so happy and proud of her service.”

During the flight, mail call letters were distributed to the veterans.

Ceil said she received hundreds of letters from hospice staff and volunteers, which she joked will keep her busy reading for a while.
