Parents given insight on learning support Education Night gives parents insight on how to support learning

While many returned to school two months ago, children need support throughout the academic year to ensure success.

Enter Shorewood Elementary School, which helped parents and students by inviting them to take part in its Shorewood Education Night Oct. 3.

The event was meant to help support student learning inside and outside the classroom.

“It’s a new format for us,” said Colleen Connolly, principal of Shorewood Elementary School.

“We want parents to be engaged with our curriculum. The students, they will be showing them the building.”

In years past, Shorewood Edu-

cation Night featured different presentations by staff members over multiple nights to help inform parents of what to expect during the academic year. It was designed this time around to serve as an open house, in which attendees can pick and choose the classrooms they wish to visit.

During the event, the school’s instructional technology coach opened up the I-Lab for parents and children to drop in.

“Our instructional technology coach will showcase the Osmos and Ipads we have for the students,” Connolly said. “They can share with their parents what they do with them.”

Attendees were encouraged to complete a scavenger hunt, which provided children and their parents with a new way to explore the building.

Kindergarten teacher Donna Marquez greeted parents and their children as they dropped in to meet her and explore the classroom. “[Students are] very excited to come to school anytime, whether it’s tonight or another night,” she said. “They’re definitely excited to bring their parents in and to explore our classroom and our school.”

Like many teachers at Shorewood Elementary School, Marquez typically sends a monthly newsletter to her student’s parents to keep them informed on how the year is progressing.

Shorewood Education Night creates yet another opportunity for staff members to engage parents.

“I just think it’s a very friendly environment for the parents to

come in, and I think it’s just a nice night that they get to spend with their kids, and they get to see what is happening in the school,” Marquez said.

Shorewood Education Night typically brings in more than 200 families each year. The building houses 459 students, to date.

Connolly said changing the format of Shorewood Education Night was important to the school and its effort to engage families.

“Our community is strong, and they come out for many events,” she said. “Through our Parent Advisory Committee, parents are always wanting to get involved.”

Aimee Merritt, of Shorewood, said she is glad she decided to drop in to meet her children’s teachers and explore the school they attend.

“I like to learn about what my kids are doing in school, and I like to show my face, and just to be involved in what they’re doing,” Aimee said.

New Speedway gas station coming to Joliet Gas station to be at the southwest corner of Route 53 and Emerald Drive

The City of Joliet is getting a new gas station at the southwest corner of Route 53 and Emerald Drive.

Joliet officials approved a series of measures to satisfy this aim at an Oct. 3 city council meeting.

The project includes a fueling center, convenience store, and beer and wine retail store.

Part of the council’s approval secures a sales tax rebate agreement to develop the 14.6 acres of property.

The site in question sits near an intersection for which improvements will be required by Speedway.

Speedway will receive a 50-percent sales tax rebate effective for a 10-year period. The money generated is anticipated to amount to $310,000.

TIF feasibility study OK’d for former Sliver Cross Hospital property Also at the meeting, officials reviewed a proposal to analyze the former Silver Cross Hospital property for tax increment finance district feasibility to help spur redevelopment.

The site in question is slated for demolition, with the exception

of the 60,000-square-foot special care pavilion. Joliet officials are looking to implement a TIF district to include the remaining property and adjacent parcels for redevelopment.

The council, in conjunction with hospital officials, has been trying to develop a strategy to assist in future marketing efforts and land use.

Joliet officials intend to enlist the consulting services of S.B. Friedman to take on the project.

The city will pay $31,125 for the fees and scope of service for work performed. That amount puts S.B. Friedman in a position to receive funds consistent with previous work completed for Joliet on the Presence-Saint Joseph and downtown TIF amendment.

Several unincorporated parcels are included in the proposed TIF feasibility study. The city intends to survey the owners regarding

Joliet public schools early preschool programs receive state awards Congratulations to Forest Park Individual Education (I.E.) School, Edna Keith Elementary School, and Marycrest Early Childhood Center for being recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education for their preschool programs. Forest Park and Marycrest Schools each received the Gold Circle of Quality Award and Keith School received the Silver Circle of Quality award. The principals and staff members were presented with plaques for their achievements

by Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse and the Board of School Inspectors at their school board meeting on October 4.

The awards are achieved through ExceleRate Illinois, the state’s quality recognition and improvement system for early learning and development programs that serve children from birth to age 5.

The programs are ranked by a set of standards that focus on early learning and development and rank the programs on instructional excellence, family ser-

vices, staff qualifications, professional development, and program administration. The schools also received a certificate from the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies.

Saint Paul the Apostle teachers win awards Jessica Contreras and Celeste Jay were recently honored with the Core Values in Catholic Education award by the Diocese of Joliet. Contreras was presented the award for junior high math and Jay for junior high science. The awards were presented

by Rev. John Belmonte, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Joliet.

annexation. If no interest or willingness is presented, those parcels will be removed from the proposed TIF development area.

TIF development agreement with Stadium Club OK’d Joliet officials advanced a measure that intends to form an agreement to develop the property 141 E. Jefferson, which is also known as Stadium Club.

The building is owned by the city, and it is made up by a threestory structure and basement space.

Joliet officials previously approved a project that will allow up to 11 multiple family units along with commercial space.

Since that time, the city and Sta-

dium Club, LLC have been working to put together a tentative agreement.

The city intends to use a public partnership to allow the project to proceed.

Joliet has three other downtown residential developments impacted by the state of the housing market. To help finance the effort, the deal includes a combination of grant funds and TIF rebate.

Development costs amount to an estimated $1,894,2000. The project conforms to the city’s downtown development plan, which encourages residential and commercial activity.

The owner intends to allot $1,492,200, or 78.9 percent, to pay for construction.

That means a city TIF grant, valued at $300,000, and a pending Joliet City Center Partnership grant request, valued at $100,000, are needed to advance the project.

Medicaid is still a target of healthcare reform Debate is far from over and shifting to the states with an eye to funding

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE What’s going to happen to healthcare now that Senate Republicans have failed to pass their bill, which would have replaced much of the Affordable Care Act? In particular, what’s going to happen to Medicaid, the government’s largest insurance program, which covers 74 million Americans?

This is a good time to clarify what was at stake and may still be up for grabs in the months to come.

Despite its importance to so many people, Medicaid has always been the health system’s stepchild.

Many doctors and dentists have avoided taking Medicaid patients saying the program didn’t pay enough.

Until recently, editors haven’t been keen to feature stories about Medicaid believing that their audience was not interested in reading about people most likely to be on the program – the poor, the disabled, kids, and seniors who needed it to pay for their nursing home care.

Suddenly, media stories about cutting Medicaid and the loss of coverage to millions became news. “In the course of the debate, it’s become clear that Medicaid has tremendous public support.

There has been much more focus in this debate than I’ve seen in any health policy debate,” said Shannon Buckingham, vice president for communications at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington D.C., think tank.

So what is this program that affects so many and will undoubtedly surface again either later this year or next as a political football?

It was created in 1965 under the Johnson administration at the same time Medicare was passed. Unlike Medicare, though, which is a social insurance entitlement to which people contribute throughout their

working lives, Medicaid is a welfare program.

Those applying for coverage must meet strict asset and income tests, which mean they can’t own very much and they can’t earn a lot of money. Everyone who qualifies is guaranteed coverage.

The benefit package that all states must offer is generous, covering many services, including nursing home care and transportation to medical appointments.

It pays for care given at rural health clinics and federally qualified health clinics.

States can provide optional benefits such as prescription drugs, respiratory care, dental services, physical and speech therapy. Many states do.

States and the federal government share in the cost, and that’s where the fight in Congress comes in.

As medical costs have risen - with few controls on how high they can go - states have found that Medicaid is consuming larger shares of their annual budgets, often crowding out other needs like fixing roads.

The federal government continues to pay more too.

One solution for this dilemma is to change the way Medicaid is financed - from a state-federal matching arrangement into what’s called a block grant.

Under a block grant, the federal government will give a set amount of money to the states.

It’s a way reduce its healthcare expenditures while shifting more of the burden to the states to cover their residents who depend on Medicaid.

Conservatives have argued for years that giving the states a lump sum would mean they could manage their programs as they saw fit.

That’s why during debates on

Medicaid you hear phrases like “more flexibility” and “greater freedom.”

But others argue that flexibility and freedom come at a cost.

It could allow states to offer fewer benefits and impose restrictions that would make it harder for people to get care.

The Graham-Cassidy bill that was the Senate’s last attempt at remodeling the Affordable Care Act called for block grants and eliminated the ACA’s Medicaid expansion program that had provided healthcare to those with incomes between the poverty level and 138 percent of the poverty level.

This year that’s about $16,600 for a single person and about $34,000 for a family of four.

The expansion had brought some 12 million people onto the program.

The Medicaid debate is far from over and is shifting to the states.

Several have applied for waivers from the federal government to allow them more flexibility.

For example, a state might ask for permission to enroll Medicaid recipients in private insurance plans as Arkansas has done.

While a private market solution might sound good, it could mean that people on Medicaid would have to pay higher deductibles and other cost sharing.

Indiana has a waiver that requires recipients to make small monthly payments and maintain a savings account mostly funded by the state to pay for some of their care.

People who don’t make their payments may be locked out of coverage for a time.

Some states like Arizona and Kentucky are eyeing work requirements.

Most Medicaid recipients, however, are already working.

These potential changes raise important questions this last debate didn’t answer.

Who should get coverage? Should we control rising medical costs by reducing healthcare for those who can least afford it?

Maybe the next debate will give us the answers.

A nice, conservative mutual fund might be a really good idea DEAR DAVE, I have a savings account for my two-year old that has $5,000 in it, and about half of that is in gold. I’m going to save for his college separately, and give this to him to help start his life after school. Is there a better place to put this other than a traditional savings account?

LAURA DEAR LAURA, First of all, you should not invest in gold. Gold is a very volatile, very dangerous investment. I don’t have a dime invested in gold, and I would strongly suggest that you not invest in it, either. If you take a look at the life-long track record on gold it will scare you to death.

For the time being, you can leave it all in a traditional savings account. But if he’s not going to use it for many, many years you could

move it into a conservative mutual fund. In fact, you started when he was at such young age, a nice, conservative mutual fund might be a really good idea.

When he gets a little older, he can start adding to it himself from the money he makes from odd jobs and chores and such. After 15 years or so, thanks to your foresight and his contributions, he’ll probably wind up with a pretty nice chunk of cash.

MICHAEL DEAR MICHAEL, Lots of people think paying off the debt with highest interest rate

Your probability of becoming wealthy has a lot more to do with your behavior than any sort of financial sophistication or academic degree.

When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next largest debt. When you pay that one off — and you’ve wiped out two debts — it energizes you. At that point, you really start first is the best approach. This seems to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago if those people could do math they wouldn’t be drowning in debt.

Debt is not a mathematical problem, it’s a behavior problem.

Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest — even though it may be mathematically incorrect — is that modifying your behavior and inspiring you to get out of debt is more important than the math.

When the Joliet Catholic Academy volleyball team lost 25-19, 2521 to Marist at home last week – it was the sixth loss of the team for the Angels against 19 wins.

It is not the number of losses that should be focused on, however, but who JCA has lost to.

“If you look at who are losses are to and only one of those losses is to an unranked team and I think every other loss is to a top five team in the state,” said JCA coach Christine Schiebe. “Our level of competition is there. We are preparing ourselves for the postseason and making a run for it then and peak at the right time.”

“We really played true Angel volleyball and we hadn’t seen that yet this season and we go to expose that to everyone and I am hoping that how we played will carry on the rest of the season,” said JCA’s Sarah Nahas. “The teams we have lost to have been the best of the best. I would rather have it that way than playing teams that are not as challenging and as good.”

Schiebe said playing the top teams in the state not only expose the Angels to facing talented teams, it shows them where they need to improve.

Former Voyager Media editor returns to Flyers Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced Wednesday (Oct. 4) the hiring of Scott Taylor as the Director of Bowling and Athletic Communication Assistant.

“Scott Taylor will add to our intercollegiate athletic department,” Planek said. “His deep knowledge of high school bowling and his relationships with numerous coaches and prospects will help our recruitment of new students along with his Lewis undergraduate experience.

“He will be a great ambassador for our newest sport. His award winning journalistic skills will aid in our athletic communications department.”

Taylor, a 2007 graduate of Lewis University, graduated with a degree in Journalism and a minor in coaching. During his time at Lewis he was the Sports Editor for “The Flyer,” Lewis’ student newspaper, men’s basketball manager and participated in numerous intramural sports, including bowling.

After graduating he was the Athletic Facilities Maintenance & Game Management Graduate Assistant.

“I have loved everything about Lewis, especially the athletic department, since the first time I went to a basketball game when I was a senior in high school,” Taylor said. “Lewis athletics has a great tradition and I am honored to be a part of it.

“I am excited to be back at Lewis and am looking forward to the opportunity ahead in the different roles. I feel my experience and knowledge of the university will help me succeed in both positions.”

Taylor has spent the past 11 years covering high school sports in the Chicagoland area, including four as the sports editor for Voyager Media Publications, and won

12 awards from the Illinois Press Association.

Because of his love and knowledge of the sport, Taylor created a website dedicated to high school and collegiate bowling throughout the state of Illinois. The website features state rankings and results from across the state, as well as interviews with bowlers and player profiles. His years covering bowling has helped him develop strong relationships with parents, bowlers and coaches throughout the state.

“I am grateful for the opportunity Lewis and Dr. Planek have given to me to achieve a dream of mine,” Taylor said. “I also want to thank my friends and family for their support throughout the entire process.

“I am looking forward to promoting the bowling program as well as all of the athletic teams to the best of my ability. I’m eager to help the future student athletes be successful both on the lanes and off.”

He lives in Joliet, IL with his wife Mandie, a Lewis graduate, and son Knox.

Big plays not enough for Saints on homecoming Despite some big offensive plays in the first half, the St. Francis football team dropped a 52-30 decision on a rainy day at ATI Field.

The Saints’ offense clicked in the first 30 minutes, leading to a 30-28 halftime advantage.

During the break, a storm rolled through the Joliet area and a heavy rain continued throughout the second half. The weather, coupled with the Miners defense, put a damper on the Saints’ aerial attack.

Missouri S&T (4-2) ran the football effectively in the second half on its way to the victory.

In the high-scoring first half, the Saints (1-4) capitalized on four big plays.

Trailing 7-0, Lexus Jackson (University Park, Ill./

Crete-Monee)received a punt and ran it 56 yards for a score.

It was the first special teams touchdown of the season for USF. After another Missouri S&T score, Jackson put his second touchdown on the board.

On a sweep play to the left, Jackson was hit behind the line of scrimmage and looked stopped, but circled back to his right and found an opening, scampering 75 yards to the end zone.

The Miners put together a five-play, 57-yard drive to extend their lead to 21-13, but the Saints hit on two more one-play scoring drives to take its first advantage.

In a span of 22 seconds, Aaron Ellis (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove) hit Brandon Ruffin (Peo-

ria, Ill./Peoria) on 69-yard and 29-yard touchdowns, the latter set up by a Miners fumble.

Missouri S&T scored another touchdown on a Deshawn Jones 27-yard run, but the Saints took a 30-28 lead into halftime with a 25-yard Luke Nelson (La Grange, Ill./Lyons) field goal.

Although the Saints’ offense may have grabbed most of the headlines in the first half, the USF defense forced two turnovers that led to 10 points.

The heavy rain took away USF’s edge on offense in the second half, while Missouri S&T showcased a strong ground game on its way to a 52-30 victory.

How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage.

Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.

A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary

tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health

can consider these strategies.

START EXERCISING THE BRAIN EARLY ON A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive func-

tion in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion.

READ MORE BOOKS Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial.

HIT THE GYM Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body.

SUPPLEMENT WITH DHA DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take.
