Here, the second in a two-part series that chronicles what kept people talking in Shorewood in 2017:

SHOREWOOD RESIDENTS INTEND TO BRING CRAFT BREWERY TO TOWN The owners of Will County Brewing Company appeared before the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees at a May 23 meeting where officials reviewed a measure that could create a Class-K liquor license permitting craft beer sales.

Representing the proposed development at the meeting was Jamie Albert, president of Will County Brewing Company.

“We’re looking for approval of this license to be able to manufacture craft beer and to have a small tap room in front to be able to sell our beer that we serve,” he said.

Nationally, the industry for craft breweries has grown over the years. Locally, such businesses are coming on line in the City of Joliet.

“We’re hoping to be the first, obviously,” Albert said. “We’re all Shorewood residents, and we’re looking to have it in our hometown.”

Albert said the board’s approval would help the trio in bringing on line their first craft brewery.

“We all started off as home brewers as most breweries do,” he said. “If they get a good response from their beers and win some at competitions, a lot of them open up breweries.”

The owners intend to focus only on craft beer sales when their establishment opens. They will not be seeking a license to serve food.

It is to be located in a shopping plaza near Savarino’s Pizza.

At 2,700 square feet, the establishment will include a room for the manufacturing of craft beer and a front room for tasting.

SHOREWOOD LIONS HOLDS INAUGURAL MOM-A-RAMA It was a June afternoon dedicated to women in the community at the Joliet Elks Club.

Shorewood Lions International hosted its inaugural MomA-Rama, a community event focused on providing a space for women to connect over food, live music and shopping, as well as promote small businesses. It also featured a raffle, a 50/50 drawing and a live auction.

“What we were doing is we were planning our annual pancake breakfast, and I thought to myself, ‘let’s add some vendors—eight or 10 vendors,’” said Noelle Viola, president of Shorewood Lions International. “Pretty quickly when I put out the call for vendors, all of a sudden I had 30 vendors.”

That’s when the club decided to make the event special for

the moms in the community, Viola said.

This year, the Mom-A-Rama hosted more than 70 vendors.

JUNE 24 GARDEN WALK BENEFITS JOLIET AREA COMMUNITY HOSPICE Betsy Sullivan knows how important it is to support the Joliet Area Community Hospice’s pediatric program. So, when an opportunity arose 11 years ago to start an annual community event raising funds to benefit the organization that provided assistance to her grandson, Sullivan said she knew she needed to take action.

“It’s been rewarding to see it,” she said of the event. “We never dreamed it would be going on 11 years later.”

Joliet Area Community Hospice Garden Walk provides an opportunity for people to go on self-guided tours of several gardens located in Shorewood, Joliet, New Lenox, Plainfield and Channahon.

“It has been a wonderful event, and we are so lucky for the people who open up their beautiful gardens to our guests,” said Laureen Crotteau, event and media specialist for Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Crotteau said people tend to like what the event offers.

“They enjoy seeing new things and getting new ideas,” she said.

From flowers and garden art to ponds and butterfly gardens, guests acquire ideas to try in their yards—whether shady or sunny, small or large space, flat or hilly.

“Our gardens offer something for everyone,” Crotteau promised.

Typically, the Garden Walk raises between $12,000 and $14,000.

TIMBER’S BRINGS PROM EXPERIENCE TO SENIORS For one evening only, The Timbers of Shorewood was transformed into a carnival as guests were invited to take part in its annual Seniors’ Senior Prom.

The June 23 event provided an opportunity for people to enjoy food, live entertainment and games; and students from Joliet Catholic Academy and Joliet West High School helped make it a reality.

“It’s bringing joy to people,” said Faith Ann Varga, executive director of The Timbers of Shorewood. “That’s what it’s all about.”

A number of memories were created throughout the evening as people dropped in.

A gypsy was telling fortunes, a lion was roaming the grounds and a man was walking on

stilts.

“A lot of these seniors never went to a prom,” Varga said. “Don’t forget in their lifetime, a lot of them didn’t even go to high school. So, this is just showing them, giving them that opportunity that, ‘Oh, my God. This is what a prom is like.’ To bring these kind of memories, I’ve had people to say to me, ‘You know I never went to prom, and here I’m went to a prom.’”

Seniors’ Senior Prom typically brings in between 200 and 350 people.

OFFICIALS SELECT LEGAL COUNSEL TO ADVISE TRUSTEES Shorewood officials are looking to bury the hatchet and find a way forward.

On June 27 at the regular Village Board meeting, the Board of Trustees sought to retain legal counsel by enlisting the services of Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins to advise the board on what action, if any, to take against Mayor Rick Chapman for his personal use of a Village-owned gas pump.

The matter first received attention at a public meeting following the April 4 election. Officials have since adopted a fuel policy to restrict access of elected officials to Village-owned gas.

“Five weeks ago, we were tasked, myself and Trustee [Steve] Brockman, were tasked with trying to find a couple of attorneys to look into this matter, and I contacted three and I got two proposals back,” Trustee Dan Anderson said.

“Trustee Brockman got ahold of two, I believe.”

The prices proposed for the legal counsel advice they seek varies to a point, but not significantly, Anderson said.

“I think the price isn’t really going to matter that much because time matter and the time amount is going to offset the cost, vice versa,” he said. “I don’t think we need to look at it that way.”

NEW TRUSTEE APPOINTED TO TROY TOWNSHIP BOARD Township Supervisor Joseph D. Baltz and the Troy Township Board welcomed. Bryan W. Kopman as Troy Township Trustee after his appointment at the June 19 regular meeting. Kopman was appointed to fulfill the remainder of the term of Trustee Don Walden who passed away May 20.

The tradition in Troy Township is that the person holding the Office of Collector will be the first to be considered for appointment to trustee if the position becomes vacant. This was the

WILL COUNT Y CLERK ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots announced she will not seek re-election in the March 2018 primary.

She plans to retire at the end of her current 4-year term effective December 2018.

“It’s a bittersweet decision since I truly love my job leading the Clerk’s office. I started working in the office as a senior in high school back in 1975. Since then I administered or helped administer, every federal, state, and local election in Will County for more than forty years. I am proud of the many accomplishments my staff and I achieved over the years as we’ve exceeded all my expectations. I’m especially proud of implementing a new optical scan election system with equipment for the disabled allowing them to vote independently for the first time.”

“I’ve had two loves in my life, my family and my career in the County Clerk’s office and now it’s time to put my family first. Deciding to retire was made easier after my husband Steve retired as IT Manager at Caterpillar last year. I made my final decision in May after the birth of our granddaughter Ivanna Belle, as our only son and his wife live in Minnesota.

I’ve been a fulltime County Clerk for many years and now it’s time for me to be a full time grandmother there too. I’ve had a good run, but life is just too short.”

CREST HILL PET STORE DRAWS PROTESTERS FROM JOLIET While the pet store Puppy in the Window may have left the Joliet city limits, it did not leave animal rights activist group Safe Pets for Joliet behind.

The shop, which has been located at 2400 Caton Farm Rd. in Crest Hill for about six weeks, was the site of a protest July 15 organized by Safe Pets for Joliet.

“Puppy in the Window used to be located in Joliet and since they have moved, we are supporting our friends in Crest Hill because they are now dealing with the problem we had,” said Morgan Drdak, founder of Safe Pets for Joliet.

“What we are doing out here today is raising awareness that the pet store does not have a rescue model and sells dogs from commercial breeders. We want to encourage people to rescue or adopt and not buy from stores that sell animals from mills because that just perpetuates the problem and puts money into the pockets of the inhumane breeders.”

While Roxana Dusanek, owner of Puppy in the Window, acknowledges she is a for-profit business that makes money off the sale of animals, she denies any inhumane actions.

“I have spent my entire adult life fighting for the welfare of animals,” Dusanek said. “So, to be accused of doing the one thing I would never do just hurts. Are there pet stores that buy from puppy mills? Yes. But I don’t. I do make a profit off the sale of animals, but to say that I abuse them and neglect them is beyond farfetched.”

Dusanek said she feels groups like Safe Pets for Joliet would be better off working with her than against her.

“The accusations that they make are so farfetched,” she said. “If we would work together, we could probably eliminate puppy mills, but the fact that they are so radical and so unwilling to listen and work together makes it even harder. We are spending time fighting against each other instead of fighting to stop the awful puppy mills. In the things they pass out, the breeders on the list were 9 days after I bought the store and none of those puppies were purchased by me.”

COUNCIL AGREES TO INCENTIVE DEAL WITH INNOVATION PAVILION The Joliet City Council took steps last week to incentivize a redevelopment agreement with Innovation Pavilion and the development of its innovation campus planned for downtown Joliet.

In a 7-0 vote, Joliet officials agreed to a $200,000 pact, which could help the city in realizing the vision of its downtown plan of becoming a “Mecca for Young Adults.”

Councilman Pat Mudron was absent from the meeting.

Discussion between the city and Innovation Pavilion CEO Vic Ahmed related to the project took place over the last year.

The development is to consist of eight elements, including a conference center, corporate suites, shared space-incubator, maker space, STEM school, 21st century library, retail and millennial housing.

The agreement stipulates that cityowned property will be conveyed to Innovation Pavilion at no cost either with regard to the 2.67-acre parcel along North Joliet Street or the 4.67-acre site adjacent to the new bus transportation center.

JCA starting campus chapter for Habitat for Humanity Joliet Catholic Academy student Michael Murray said finding a way to giveback to the community in a way that brings great meaning is very important

to him. So when the idea arose to recruit classmates to start a campus chapter to help support Will County Habitat for Humanity, he took action to make it a reality.

“I actually thought of it as a perfect opportunity,” he said. “Years before, I went on a trip to Africa. [JCA teacher] Mark [Clarke] had been there. My mom being the executive director [of WCHFH], it struck me as a great way to serve.”

The work of the Will County chapter is driven by Habitat for Humanity’s international mission: “… safe, decent and affordable shelter plays an absolutely critical role in helping families to create a new cycle, one filled with possibilities and progress.”

“Our whole is idea with these, is that it is bringing the community together just with the volunteer experience,” WCHFH Executive Director Nicole Murray said.

“It’s our job—as Mr. Clarke knows we’ve talked about—just making sure that when there is a project that they get the full experience.”

A WCHFH campus chapter is already established for students at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox and another is forming at Plainfield East High School.

Clarke said the idea behind starting a group at JCA surfaced a little more than a year ago when Michael approached him about serving as a sponsor, and he thought it was a wonderful idea.

JOLIET CHAMBER GROUP FOCUSING ON AFRICAN AMERICAN BUSINESSES Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry announces the debut of their newest sub-group: the African American Business Association. The African American Business Association is a collaboration and vision that has now come to fruition between the Chamber and community members. These individuals from the community approached the Chamber with a need for the formation of a business-focused group to serve African American owners, managers, employees, and individuals.

The overall focus of the new group will cover four main topics including Business & Economic Development, Job Readiness, Professional Development, and Networking/Special Events.

CRAFT BEERS ON TAP AT BLUES & BREWS ON 66 Hundreds toasted to the end of summer at the Joliet City Center Partnership’s second annual Blues & Brews on 66.

to a partnership with the Joliet Park Foundation.

“Beer and blues go well together,” said Lauren Las, marketing and events manager for Joliet City Center Partnership.

“What we like about it is that at the [Joliet] City Center Partnership, we try to prepare these events to have people come downtown and see all these great places we have open… So, if we can put on a blues fest and work with the [Joliet] Park Foundation, who’s a nonprofit—to help raise money for the grade school parks— it’s a win-win.”

Blues & Brews on 66 drew in 600800 people last year, Las said. This time around, Joliet City Center Partnership was hoping to bring in a couple thousand.

“I think what’s nice about it is that our emcee tonight, T-Bird Huck—he played in a band last year—does a real history of blues in Joliet,” Las said. “He really ties it into the area. So, we always give a rich music history [of] Illinois and Joliet…

That’s been a fun aspect to have.”

This year, more than 40 craft beers were on tap for people to try. The festival featured a number of local brewers, including Elder Brewing Company of Joliet, Nevin’s Brewing Company of Plainfield and Noon Whistle Brewing of Lombard.

JOLIET, LARAWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT 70-C REACH PACT ON ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS The Joliet City Council secured an agreement with Laraway School District 70-C for roadway improvements on Rowell Avenue at its Aug. 15 regular meeting.

In a unanimous vote, officials decided to pay for work to improve existing conditions on the road.

Laraway School recently annexed property between Caroline and Eunice Avenue, on the west side of Rowell Avenue, just north of the ComEd and Natural Gas Pipeline rights-of-ways. Around that time, the district agreed to pay for the improvements needed.

The City of Joliet is already in the middle of designing and improving Rowell Avenue, immediately south of the ComEd and Natural Gas Pipeline rightsof-way, adjacent to the Laraway Crossings subdivision.

The pact intends to facilitate a free flow of traffic, ensure compatibility and define future responsibility and rights regarding construction to the western one-half of Rowell Avenue. In doing so, the city’s engineer will work together with Laraway Schools’ to provide the necessary documentation to complete improvements.

Laraway School is estimated to pay $92,400,00 in reimbursable funds, while Joliet officials are to match those funds.

Top 10 athletes from Illinois Special thanks to the Chicago Sun-Times for this week’s story.

Illinois has produced many outstanding and game-changing athletes, so it’s a tough job to create any top 10 list. The Illinois Press Association and Illinois Associated Press Media Editors enlisted longtime Chicago Sun-Times sports reporter Mark Potash for the job. Here is his list of the top 10 athletes from Illinois.

1. RED GRANGE, WHEATON The early days of professional football were not pretty or promising — obviously not televised but also casually recognized. The Bears and Cardinals were relegated to secondary pages of the sports sections in Chicago, with college football dominant and even high school football more prominent.

All things considered, no player from Illinois has had more impact on a sport than Red Grange. He was a four-sport star at Wheaton High School who scored 75 touchdowns. He became a superstar as a three-time All-American at Illinois who famously rose to the occasion of the big game when he scored four touchdowns in the first quarter against Michigan in 1924 at newly dedicated Memorial Stadium — a 95-yard return of the opening kickoff, plus runs of 67, 56 and 44 yards. In those days he was a larger-than-life star, his No. 77 was almost as famous as he was.

2. DICK BUTKUS, CHICAGO The greatest tribute to Dick Butkus’s fabulous NFL career is that as time passes and the linebacker position evolves arguably more than any in football — bigger, faster, greater athletes with triple-digit career sack numbers — his stature continues to grow. The former Vocational High School and University of Illinois star still is No. 3 in most linebacker rankings. Some still say he’s the greatest linebacker to play the game.

He was named to the All-Pro team five times and the Pro Bowl eight times.

In 119 NFL games, he had 22 interceptions and 27 fumble recoveries. And the ferocity with which he played was real.

Buffone, who played next to Butkus for seven years, often recalled looking at a frothing Butkus on the field and thinking, “I’m glad he’s on my side.”

3. GEORGE MIKAN, JOLIET At 6-10, George Mikan was the first superstar of professional basketball — the first big-man who could run the floor and dominate at the rim on both ends.

His impact forced three rules changes:

goaltending, widening of the lane and the 24-second clock. When he played with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949, the marquee at Madison Square Garden said it all: “GEO MIKAN V/S KNICKS.” An awkward, un-athletic prospect from Quigley Prep/ Joliet Catholic, Mikan flourished under Ray Meyer’s tutelage at DePaul, becoming a three-time All-American and two-time Player of the Year in college. He won seven professional league championships, including one with the Chicago American Gears of the fledgling National Basketball League and six with the Lakers.

4. ISIAH THOMAS, CHICAGO The epitome of the head-strong, will-to-win Chicago point guard, Isiah Thomas parlayed his innate skills and determination into superstardom and championships. A west side native, he took St. Joseph High School in Westchester from anonymity to second place in the Class AA state tournament in 1979. He led Indiana to the NCAA title in 1981 and was the spark plug on the Pistons’ back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. Thomas was a 12-time NBA all-star and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2000.

5. JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE, EAST ST. LOUIS A basketball and track star at East St. Louis Lincoln and UCLA, Jackie JoynerKersee made her biggest mark in international track competitions, particularly the Olympics, where she won six medals in four different Olympics — including a silver medal in the heptathlon in 1984 in Los Angeles and gold in the heptathlon in 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona.

She was named the greatest female athlete of all time by Sports Illustrated for Women in 1990.

6. OTTO GRAHAM, WAUKEGAN The Big Ten Player of the Year at Northwestern — where he also played basketball and baseball — in 1943, Otto Graham became a prolific quarterback and one of the great leaders of pro football history. He won seven league titles with Paul Brown’s Cleveland Browns in the old All-American Football Conference (1946-49) and NFL (1950, 1954 and 1955) and three NFL Most Valuable Player awards (1951, 1953, 1955).

7. RAY NITSCHKE, MAYWOOD A rough-and-tough, fierce competitor from Proviso High School, Ray Nitschke was a third-round draft pick by the Packers out of Illinois who was at the right

place at the right time — becoming an intimidating force as the leader of the great Packer defenses in the Vince Lombardi era. Nitschke won five NFL championships with the Packers, including the first two Super Bowls. He was the MVP of the 1962 championship game.

8. JIMMY CONNORS, BELLEVILLE The “Brash Basher of Belleville,” as tennis guru Bud Collins called him, the East St. Louis native was a gritty, gutty, unconventional player and non-conformist who is credited with sparking a re-birth in American tennis in the early 1970s. Jimmy Connors won eight Grand Slam titles, a record 109 singles titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world for 268 weeks, including a then-record 160 straight from 1974-77.

In 1974 at age 22, Connors went 99-4 and won 15 tournaments, including three Grand Slam events — the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

He was barred from the French Open (the second leg) because of a contract with the World Team Tennis, costing him a chance to win the Grand Slam.

9. LOU BOUDREAU, HARVEY A Hall of Fame shortstop with the Cleveland Indians, Lou Boudreau had one of the greatest baseball seasons of all-time as player/manager in 1948. He won the American League batting title (.355) and MVP award and led the Indians to the World Series championship — the only title the Indians have won since 1920. Great knack for leadership, Boudreau won a state title in basketball as a sophomore at Thornton and Big Ten titles as team captain in basketball and baseball at Illinois.

10. BONNIE BLAIR, CHAMPAIGN Bonnie Blair won five gold medals at three different Olympic Games, capped by a dominating performance in 1994 at Lillehammer, when she won the 500-meters (by 0.36 seconds) and 1,000 meters (by a record-1.38 seconds) by wide margins. She was the first American to win an event (the 500-meters) in three consecutive Olympics. She won the Sullivan Award as the best amateur athlete in the U.S. in 1992.

This season, she averaged an area-best 20.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds on the basketball court. She ended her career as the all-time leader in points in school history with 1,523.

A Voyager Media All-Area team member, she was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state honorable mention. She will continue her basketball career at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

On the volleyball court, the senior setter led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to go with 43 blocks for the Indians.

She helped Minooka reach the state finals, where it battled for a title and fell in the three sets to the nation’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A state finals.

“Brooklyn was a fierce leader on the court and we will very much miss her,” said Minooka volleyball coach Carrie Prosek. “She would dive through bleachers to keep that ball alive for our offense to hit the ball. She could push the ball to the pin no matter where she was and that is truly what kept us alive when things were off. She took ahold of this young team and taught them how to be confident and want to win.”

In the spring, Bachmann was again a state qualifier in the Class 3A pole vault.

STARS SHINE Last summer, Joliet was the epicenter of the Frontier League as the Slammers hosted the annual league All Star game and corresponding events.

The activities included everything from a golf outing at Mistwood Golf Club to a beer fest to a replica of the Collins Street prison as a giveaway to fans.

The highlight of the week was the game in which the Slammers and the East won 4-1 over the West.

QUEEN OF THE 3 Joliet native Allie Quigley was drafted by the Seattle Storm of the WNBA with the 22nd pick of the 2008 draft.

She was released by Seattle before playing a game, but rejoined the Storm for the 2011 season.

Last weekend, Quigley again returned to Seattle — only this time, she was the storm In front of more than 15,000 fans at Seattle’s KeyArena and several family members from Joliet, Quigley won the WNBA ThreePoint Contest and played in her first-ever WNBA All-Star game.

She beat out Sugar Rodgers in the final to take home the trophy.

Zone tournament has been held in Bay Ridge, MI, there has never been a team that has qualified for the tournament three consecutive years – until now.

Crest Hill selected its 13-player All-Star roster from a total of 24 13-and-14-year old players, while some programs select from 100 or more players.

To advance to the tournament, Crest Hill needed to defeat the Kankakee All Stars twice in the double elimination tournament.

MAC HONORED Eural “Mac” McLaughlin was a 5-foot-1, 118-pound quarterback his senior year at Dunbar High School in 1959.

In his final high school game, McLaughlin faced CVS star Dick Butkus, who promptly spit in his face mask from about eight yards away.

It was the last time anyone disrespected McLaughlin.

“That was the first time and the last time I saw Butkus,” McLaughlin said. “He couldn’t catch me. I was an angry little man.”

SECOND 2ND After reaching the IHSA Class state championship match a season ago, Minooka had one goal in mind this year and that was not only to return, but to take one step further this year and win the state title.

The Indians did make that return showing to the state title match, however, Minooka fell in three sets to Marist.

Minooka claimed the first set 25-22, but dropped the next two 25-22, 25-15.

While the Indians were disappointed with the outcome, they understand the magnitude of what they have done over the past

two seasons and how hard it is to finish second out of the 174 teams that opened the Class 4A playoffs.

The Indians are the first public school team in Class 4A to play in back-to-back state championship games since Lyons Township and Cary-Grove met in 2009 and 2010.

ROCKY TOPS ALL-AREA Rocky Perinar posted 351 kills, 90 blocks, 230 digs and 22 aces.

She was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and helped the Indians to a secondstraight IHSA Class 4A secondplace trophy and was named the 2017 Voyager Media Player

RETURN AND A WIN Sam Quigley-Smith make the return trip to Joliet along with members of the coaching staff, including former USF assistants Dan McCarthy and Michael Delrose, who coached with her at USF and Charnelle Reed, who played for her last season for the Saints.

Joining the coaching staff in their return was senior guard Chrissi Ekhomu, who played at USF under Quigley-Smith the last three seasons and earned a 59-46 win over St. Francis.

Lesson learned; don’t co-sign for a loan DEAR DAVE, My wife co-signed on a loan for an old boyfriend five or six years ago. Now, a collection agency is after her for the remaining $5,000. We make about $90,000 a year combined, and our attorney recommended we file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The idea of filing bankruptcy scares me. Is there a better way to handle this?

JEFFERY DEAR JEFFERY, Your attorney doesn’t sound very bright. A bankruptcy stays on your record for years. It’s just plain stupid to consider trashing

your financial life over $5,000.

This collector bought the loan for pennies on the dollar. It’s an old debt, and that means there are very low expectations for collection. At the same time, your wife did co-sign for the loan.

If you have the money, and you can pay it off without hurting yourselves financially, do it.

That’s the right thing, both morally and legally. If you don’t have that kind of cash on hand, try haggling with them. See if you can get them to agree to settle for $2,500. Remember to get this agreement in writing before you send them a dime, and do not give them access to your bank

account.

Chances are they’ll threaten to sue and all that stuff, but my guess is you can work out something on an old loan like this.

It may take a couple of weeks and a little patience, but that’s a small price to pay if it saves you $2,500.

Sorry, but you guys will have to pay something to make this go away. And I hope it teaches you both a valuable lesson — never co-sign on a loan!

TROY SCHOOL DISTRICT 30C, CHANNAHON HAVE LAND DEAL To ensure public improvements are in place promoting safety near new development plans for a 290acre site of incorporated land, the Troy Community Consolidated School District 30C Board of Education earlier this year agreed to a pact with the Village of Channahon.

According to the agreement, the property generally located south of Route 6 and east of I-55 will be annexed to the Village of Channahon.

Board member Kristin Dawn Cross gave credit to the superintendent and the executive director of operations and finance for their work on this matter.

“This promotes business and infrastructure within our community,” she said. “We did some compromise, and it was a good thing.”

Local taxing bodies involved in the effort include the Village of Channahon, Channahon School District 17, Minooka Community High School District

111, Will and Grundy counties, Troy Community Consolidated School District 30C, Will County Forest Preserve District, Channahon Park District, Channahon Fire Protection District, Community College District No. 52, Channahon Township, Channahon Township Road District, Three River Public Libraries District.

CRITERIA FOR PROPERTY TAX REBATE PROGRAM TWEAKED To ensure residents have the ability to apply for their property tax rebate and receive the money they’re owed, the Shorewood Village Board Trustees in August agreed to amend the criteria and procedures put in place to govern the program.

“It incorporates the changes that we discussed at the Committee of the Whole two weeks ago,” said Anne Burkholder, finance director.

Several residents had approached the Village to express concern for not receiving the property tax rebate they feel they were owed. At that point, staff determined that constituents who moved from one Shorewood residence to another should qualify.

To address the issue, staff is to utilize a new method to determine if a rebate is owed.

It consists of evaluating if the applicant has lived in either the existing property or the new one from January to December for the tax levy year, the ability to demonstrate a homestead exception, and averaging the taxes to be paid to the Village of Shorewood from both properties and applying the approved rebate percentage to the average tax value.
