At its Jan. 12 meeting, the Shorewood Village Board approved the appointment of Patrick Kerr to the police and fire commission for a

three year term. Kerr is filling the position left by Ken Kopus, who moved outside of village limits. Kerr was a Joliet police officer for 33 years and retired from the deputy chief position. He currently serves as a police commander in Elwood, and

resides in Shorewood. Mayor Rick Chapman said he interviewed a few individuals, and Kerr stood out far above anyone else.

ROAD SALT, MAJOR EQUIPMENT The board approved a payment to Cargill Deicing Technology for 1,403 tons of Deicer salt for $84,380. Public Works Department Supervisor Chris Drey said this

payment will complete the total amount of the village’s contract with Cargill. “It was a good year; we took advantage of trying to get all the salt in,” said Drey, who added that the village has not used much of the salt because of the mild winter thus far. The board also approved one of the purchase department’s major equipment purchases in the 2016 budget. The new vehicle, a John

Deere compact track loader with a grapple bucket, cost $66,350 and will replace a 2002 Bobcat skid steer. Drey explained that staff became interested in purchasing the vehicle after seeing its usefulness when staff worked with Coal City after last summer’s tornado. According to board documents, the vehicle will be used by the street department and have a 10 to 15 year useful life.
