Board tosses objection to incumbent Officials agreed Daniel Warren remains on the ballot for village trustee

The village of Shorewood Municipal Officers Electoral Board ruled recently to keep the name of one candidate for the village board on the April 4 ballot.

Officials agreed that the name of Daniel Warren remains on the ballot in the wake of an objection filed by village board candidate Lona Jakaitis because his petitions were unbound.

Warren is one of four candidates looking to garner support as the village board looks to fill three open trustee positions.

Warren is attempting to retain his bid for election to the board. He ran successfully for a trustee position in 2013.

The deadline to file petitions was Dec. 19.

The seats are now filled by Daniel Anderson, Edmund Murphy and Daniel Warren. Two incumbents filed petitions to seek re-election.

Filing petitions to challenge the incumbents were Lona Jakaitis and Clarence DeBold. Trustee Edmund Murphy is not looking to run in 2017.

Jakaitis, who serves as a member of the Louis Joliet Daughters of American Revolution, filed an objection to Warren’s petitions.

The electoral board, however, tossed out the objection to Warren’s petitions and his name will remain on the ballot.

Attorney Dennis Reboletti spoke on behalf of Jakaitis during the public hearing. In testimony provided before the electoral board, he indicated that Warren failed to bind his petitions properly. He stressed that Jakaitis adheres directly, not strictly in accordance with lan-

guage presented in state law and village codes.

In response to Jakaitis’ argument, Warren sought to strike the objection. His attorney, Laura Jacksack, countered that they do not believe the motion meets the requirements outlined under Illinois law because candidates possess a substantial right for a place on the ballot. Additionally, she argued that Jakaitis’ motion is invalid for failing to state her interest in objecting.

Though state law requires that nomination petitions be bound together when filed with the county clerk of the county, in which the vil-

lage is located, the electoral board determined that Warren “substantially complied” with state election code and ethics when filing.

To this, Warren said he was pleased with the ruling of the electoral board.

“I’m extremely happy with the results,” he said. “I think it was a petty thing to bring up. There was no fraud. It was kind of an ethical issue.”

The hearing’s outcome fell short of expectation for Jakaitis, Reboletti said.

“We thought we put a vey solid case forward to outline why the

candidate should be excluded from the ballot,” he said. “Jakaitis agrees that obviously the sanctity of access to the ballot should be respected. However, we disagree with the ruling. Warren filed faulty petitions, and I will be reviewing with my client options for appeal and that will be reviewed by the court in Will County.”

The electoral board is comprised of Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman, Village Clerk Tracy Ragusa and Trustee Barbara “Cookie” Kirkland. Candidate action to submit an appeal of the ruling must be submitted to the county by Jan. 26.

Day of Service brings community together Students, community came together to serve on Jan. 16

First-year JJC student Eric Diaz said though he doesn’t have any classes to attend on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, knowing he has the opportunity to serve the community is a good way to spend the day.

“I think it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “You learn so much from each other especially from people who want to better themselves.

There’s nothing better than that.”

Students, community leaders and other individuals in the Joliet area came together to serve on Jan. 16 on the anniversary marking the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. R. Dale Evans, an event coordinator for MLK Day of Service, said bringing the community together on this federal holiday was important.

“We’ll be one of thousands of cities honoring MLK through service,” Evans said. “We think it’s important for the people to come together for the good of the community.”

This year, Evans said the goal is to bring in 1,000 volunteers to engage in 50 projects to rack up

Joliet Junior College, like many educational institutions across the country, closed their campus in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Amy Sims, JJC student activities coordinator, said having students come together for a day on, not a day off is a message the college hopes will resonate.

“The purpose as a higher education institution is to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy,” she said.

“This is a time of social unrest. We look at this as a way to bring peo-

ple together. It’s important to have conversations that Martin Luther King started long ago.”

Diaz said seeing that prominent community leaders and others, who want to make a difference, gathered in honor of Dr. King’s message was a sight to see.

“I think it’s great to see our city wanting to be improved [by] likeminded people,” he said. “Everybody’s wanting to get together to help.”

Each year, the college sends between 15 and 20 students who are willing to serve at the Joliet Hope

Center.

Minooka High School senior Hannah Dilday was packing food for those in need with JJC students. She said honoring Dr. King’s message means a lot to her.

“It makes me feel better knowing that I can make some sort of a difference, even if it’s something small,” Dilday said.

Dilday comes out to serve in the MLK Day of Service annually.

Dilday said the holiday serves as a reminder that further work to promote equality is necessary.

Community youth don’t always

feel as connected to the message conveyed by Dr. King in today’s world, she said.

“In some ways, it kind of just depends on the person,” she said.

“There are people—like everyone here—is embracing that message.

But there are also people that are against it.”

Other service projects carried out in the community included Joliet Park District nature trail cleanups and window cleanings.

“Our goal has always been to expose the people to different social service organizations,” Evans said.

2017 Great Read kicks off with Feb. 2 gala This year’s library event celebrates 20 years of Harry Potter

The 2017 Great Read community literacy program will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book with Harry Potter costume and team trivia contests at its February 2 Opening Gala.

The event at the Joliet Public Library/Black Road Branch kicks off a month of special events including an art contest and a Potterthemed family magic show.

The Great Read is a consortium of public and private organiza-

tions promoting literacy, reading, conversation, and community in Plainfield and surrounding southwest suburban partner communities since 2004.

Great Read community members are encouraged to read about Harry Potter and take part in the many programs scheduled in February at the 10 partner libraries.

The numbers border on fantastical — more than 500 million copies sold of the seven core books and $7.7 billion in movie

sales. Not bad for a boy wizard who didn’t even know he had magical powers.

Yet, the numbers alone cannot begin to reflect the incalculable impact on world culture that Harry Potter has had since he and his two best friends searched for the “Sorcerer’s Stone” (or “Philosopher’s Stone, in England) in 1997.

We are facing a critical time for voting rights in our country. On January 9, I spoke to the Southland Ministerial Health Network at their Martin Luther King Day Spirit of Excellence Awards about the need to continue the fight for voting rights as the best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Not that long ago in this country, African Americans who tried to register to vote and those who would help them register, were locked out of clerks’ offices, or worse, intimidated, beaten, even killed—so that they wouldn’t exercise their right to vote.

The 1965 Voting Rights Act helped end that violent voter suppression.

As we honor the legacy of Dr. King and those who fought for the Voting Rights Act by registering to vote and going to the polls, we must confront the ugly truth that across the country, voting rights are being threatened again. In 2013 the Supreme Court severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, giving many states wide latitude to restrict access to the polls, which they are doing with enthusiasm. We have yet to see what further damage the Supreme Court will do under the next administration.

Our successes would not have been possible without the help of engaged and involved citizens, civic groups and legislators. Eleven years ago I introduced Early Voting to Illinois, and each election cycle we see significant increases in Cook County residents voting early.

We have also implemented online voter registration, same-day voter registration and expanded our election judge program to include high school students.

This year, we reached a record 3 mil-

lion registered voters in Cook County.

We have worked diligently to ensure the lists are cleaner and more accurate.

But there is still work to do, here and nationally.

Across the country, we must bring back crucial parts of the Voting Rights Act and reverse dangerous decisions on allowing money to flood our political system. It is outrageous that the Supreme Court has said that your influence will, in effect, be determined by how much money you have.

Here in Illinois, we must pass Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). AVR will save us money be streamlining the process of cleaning the voting rolls and thereby ensuring we have the cleanest rolls possible. Government agencies should harness technology to share information so that voting rolls are accurate and citizens don’t need to unnecessarily engage with multiple bureaucracies.

A functional democracy requires voting so the wishes of the electorate are supposed to guide our public policy. When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today: public policy that is simply not what people want. Voters do not want continuing inequality or justice that is determined based on your skin color or your wealth. Dr. King understood this. He understood the relationship between racism, economic inequality and the right to vote. Today our challenge is galvanizing our energy to continue the fight he gave his life for.

JCA boys working hard ans getting better as season begins to wind down

As the Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball program continues to grow under coach Joe Gura, the Hilltoppers continue to learn more and more about themselves.

That happened again last week in a 57-46 loss to East Suburban Catholic Conference opponent Notre Dame.

Joliet Catholic stuck in the game early, being down only 1918 at halftime and 34-29 after three quarters.

“We have to understand who we are,” said JCA coach Joe Gura “Once we understand who we are as a basketball team, we just have to work on getting us better and it really doesn’t matter the opponent.

“We can’t say that we are going to plan for Notre Dame differently. It was tough planning for them – they have 6-foot-9, 6-8, 6-7, another 6-7 off the bench and then two kids that can shoot the lights out. That’s not bad.”

Hard work has been a staple of this season’s JCA team and has led to the team’s success.

“We stress playing hard and the game only turned when we had to play so hard and the defense was so tough on us that we wore down and threw the ball away a few times late and that is understandable – but we want to clean that

stuff up,” Gura said. “I told the kids that this is like a marriage – I am sure there are times when my wife says, Joe you are doing silly things and I don’t know if I like you – but we stick together. I told the guys that is how I feel – I gave them each a hug and told them we have to fight and battle every possession.”

While the Hilltoppers do have talent and experience at the top of the roster – the experience does not go very deep.

“I am as proud of this team as I was last year of the team that won 21 games because this year’s team doesn’t have the raw talent – but they play as hard and they play defense and they give everything they have and they get better,” Gura said. “I have a job to do this year – I have to keep this group together because when you ask them to give you everything they have and they do – you can’t be disappointed. I have to work to make them better.”

And JCA has shown the ability to win games when playing teams that are their same size, both physically as well as enrollment.

Gura is hoping that shows when it is time for the IHSA regional.

“We host the regional this year for the first time in eons,” Gura said. “I just keep preaching to play their best when it comes time for the regional and we will see what we can do. Maybe we can make some magic happen.”

Porters place second at Oswego E. Regional

Lockport has been through the battles before and knows what it takes to get to state.

The Porters took the first step in getting back to the state meet again after finishing second in the Oswego East Regional with a 5,827 total at Parkside Lanes in Aurora. Oswego was the surprising winner with a 5,872.

Andy Sims led the way with a 1,287. Alec Buchaas shot a 1,229, Ray Bufka role a 1,183 and Caleb Derrig added a 1,069.

The Porters, while always want-

ing to win, just focus on advancing to the next round and that mentality paid off once again.

“We had to make the spares today,” Sims said. “It was pretty rough. I was farther left than I have ever been. It was so fried out there. You have to stick together when it is like that. We care about the finish the last week in January and today we just wanted to advance. It would be nice to win, but we are bowling next week, which is what we want.”

“It is a great feeling,” Buchaas said. “It was a tough day. We grinded through it and made it through. If we are advancing, we’re ok with it, but we always have the mentality of wanting to win. I think we bowled well for how the lanes were.”

Lockport will now head to a bowling alley it is familiar with, Town and Country Lanes in Joliet, for the Plainfield North Sectional.

The top six teams and five individuals will advance to state from there.

“Hopefully they don’t break down like this because that was kind of brutal,” Sims said. “We just want to finish in the top six and go down to the finals. The spares are always the key for us because we can always strike.”

“It is nice and close to us and we have a lot of matches there, so I think we will do well there,” Buchaas said. “Spares will be the key. We have to make more spares. There is always those nervous feelings, but there is a confidence in the team that we can do it. We know we have to show up. There are a lot of great teams there.”

Minooka and Joliet West will be joining the Porters at Town and Country after qualifying out of the Minooka Regional.

The Indians placed second with a 6,403, while Joliet West was third with a 6,173. Lincoln-Way West won with a 6,495.

Scoring for the Indians were Ryan Koesema (1,358), Austin Schomig (1,290), Kai Devine (1,284), Tyler Koenig (1,264) and Jon Studer (1,207).

The Tigers got six-game scores from Michael Greather (1,458) and Jordan Anderson (1,254).

Joliet Central’s Tyler Theobald advanced individually with a 1,322.

Former Rush coach teaching the game right

In the today’s hypersensitive landscape, the game of football is getting a bad rap – especially at the youth level as talks of concussions and other serious injuries threaten the very existence of the sport.

There is at least one local organization and coaching staff that is working to teach the game of football the right way – and so far it seems to be working.

The Patriots Youth Travel Football team has been winning championships, sending players to the top of the high school game and beyond and doing it all with an AllStar class of coaches – all of whom make teaching the right way to play their first priority.

Leading the way in terms of coaching pedigree is former Benedictine All-American and Arena League Hall of Famer Bob McMillen.

McMillen is the only member of the current 12U Patriots staff that has a son on the team – a team that recently won the Pop Warner Super Bowl at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Prior to taking the Patriots to titles, he was a three-time All-American for what was then Illinois Benedictine College, a fullback and linebacker from 1995-2008 in the Arena Football League where he retired as the league’s second all-time leading rusher. He then coached with the Chicago Rush as an assistant and was named head coach in 2010, earning Coach of the Year honors in 2013 before coaching two seasons with the LA KISS, owned by legendary rock stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2013.

“It is relieving,” McMillen said of coaching with the Patriots. “There is a lot less stress than when you are dealing with professional athletes and having the pressure of winning games for fans and stuff.

Being able to come home and teach the game of football to kids is exciting and fun and a breath of fresh air to watch kids develop and get better as the season goes on.

“We tell the parents that we are not a babysitting service. We are here to teach the game of football and for the kids to get better as the season goes on and if they want to play in high school or even be-

Two of those players on the championship team are Downers Grove residents Sal DeLuca and Zach Bluder.

Bluder, the starting center, said the experience of playing for the title was one he will never forget.

“It was a great experience,” Bluder said. “Our coaches told us it was going to be real hard in Florida and the first game was a wakeup call for us and we pushed through it. We have a lot of special players on this team and we work really hard.”

DeLuca agreed that the team had a once in a lifetime experience.

“It was really fun to spend the week in Florida with the team,” DeLuca said. “It was great when we faced the teams because they were a big challenge, but we were the team that won. We train really hard and we had our minds on the games and we were going to be the opponent. We used to goof around a lot and the coaches taught us to make it first that we want to win a championship and not just goof around and it paid off.”

For DeLuca, an offensive and defensive lineman, his play is not all about himself when he is on the field. He said every time he steps on the field, he is playing for the memory of his uncle Salvatore DeLuca – who Sal is named for.

Salvatore was a member of the Downers Grove South football team and was killed in an accident at age 17 in 2001 on the way home from football practice. The Mustangs won the Class 8A state title

that season.

“I am trying to be the best I can just like him,” DeLuca said. “When I first tried on his helmet and jersey, it was inspiring to know he was so good at football and I want to be just like him. It makes me and my family proud. We lost him at such a young age, that it’s like a younger him is inside me playing football.”

As DeLuca and the other Patriots try and play to their best – they know they are doing so with the best coaches around.

“The kids all know where I came from and what I have done, but this was my seventh national championship I won with the Patriots organization. We don’t go out and recruit kids, the kids that come out are the kids that we are going to try to be successful with,” McMillen said. “Being able to play for 13 years and then coach (in the Arena League) may give me a leg up on some coaches, but it is all about teaching the game the right way. That decreases injury and helps kids become better football players.

“A lot of credit has to go to the parents. They know that when you are being taught by a guy who has been there and done that in college and professionally and being successful in the youth programs as a coach, it helps. The kids that sign up, they know who they want to play for. I stress to parents to do your homework before you sign your kid up for a football league and make sure the coaches that you are trusting your son to play for know what they are talking

about. I am not bad mouth any program – but they have to see who will be coaching their son. Is it an armchair dad who has never played the game or is it someone who knows what they are talking about that has been around the game and been around youth football and can teach the proper techniques. We teach proper tackling techniques and a lot of programs just want to see who can hit harder and that is the wrong way to do it. That is how you get your injuries. In the 12 years I have been around youth football, we have only had three concussions and two of them were from a kid hitting the ground.”

McMillen is not the only highly acclaimed coach in the organization as Doug DiFusco, former Nazareth Academy assistant coach and current offensive coordinator at Bolingbrook High School, is the longest tenured Patriots’ coach at 11 years in the organization and hasn’t had a son playing since 2009.

“We are all just coaches who love to develop kids and make sure they are prepared for high school, but we want ours to jump off the page when they get to high school,” DiFusco said. “That means kids who are freshmen, who if they are needed to or given the opportunity, can compete at the varsity level. We have had a lot of them over the years.”

DiFusco said the program’s success in turning out quality athletes has been the reason for the growth of the program to communities outside its Naperville base.

“I think the most important thing that we see are coaches not doing it the right way and what we are seeing now because of the success of the program is we have kids from all over,” he said.

“We have kids from Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Joliet, Oswego, Aurora, Plainfield, Chicago, Wheaton, you name it. We have kids coming from all over to play Patriots football because the see that we develop kids the right way. We teach the fundamentals the same from when they are six-years-old.”

That influx of other communities makes playing for the Patriots more fun for the athletes.

“It is real fun to have people from everywhere,” Bluder said. “Every year I make a lot of new friends on the team and that makes it an even better experience.”

Both DiFusco and McMillen know that influx of players is because parents are seeing the kids being taught the right way and while they are successful, it is not all about the wins and losses.

“They go hand in hand. If you are winning, you are teaching the kids the right way to play football and if you are teaching kids the right way to play football, you are winning,” McMillen said. “It is not just the 12U team that won nationals, we are all successful.

“It is awesome for us to see kids that we coached for years have success in high school or get a college scholarship. It is great to know that something I did early in that kid’s life allowed him to not only go out and be a great football player, but a great human being.”

Women remain undefeated Junior Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook) turned in her third straight 20-plus point performance with a gamehigh 22 points as No. 1-ranked University of St. Francis stayed unbeaten with a 75-55 victory over St. Ambrose University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday evening at the Sullivan Center.

With the win, USF (18-0, 11-0 CCAC) remained one of only two undefeated teams in NAIA Division II; Southeastern University (16-0) defeated Keiser University 84-67 earlier on Saturday. St. Ambrose, which handed the Saints two of their five losses a season ago, fell to 6-13, 2-9 with its fourth consecutive setback.

USF used an early 10-1 run to help build a 21-9 lead after one quarter. The Saints expanded their advantage to 15 points (31-6) midway thought the second stanza, before St. Ambrose launched a 10-0 run to trim the deficit to five. USF scored the final four points of the period to take a 35-26 lead at the

intermission.

After St. Ambrose scored the first eight points of the second half to make it a one-point game (35-34), USF countered with a 10-0 run before outscoring the Bees 8-0 during the final two minutes of the third stanza to increase its lead to 6243. The Saints remained on top by at least 17 points throughout the fourth period, leading by as many as 26 midway through the quarter.

Jordan buried five 3-point field goals (in eight attempts) en route to her 22-point effort – her third outing with at least 20 points in as many games. Junior Christina Ekhomu (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Joliet Catholic) and senior Jordan Giddings (Rock Falls, Ill./ Rock Falls) tallied 19 and 18 points, respectively, while senior Charnelle Reed (Chicago Heights, Ill./ HomewoodFlossmoor) added 10 to go along with five steals.

St. Ambrose held a 41-35 edge on the boards, but USF forced 28 turnovers and held the Bees to 35 percent shooting from the field.

Aubrie Carlisle paced the Bees with

13 points. The Saints, who won for the 34th time in their last 36 CCAC regular-season contests, connected on 10 of 23 attempts from 3-point range. USF improved to 7-0 at the Sullivan Center this season and 25-2 dating back to Feb. 11, 2014.

After jumping out to a 12-2 lead, the Saints built their largest edge of the first half at 35-14 before taking a 50-34 advantage into the halftime break. USF maintained at least 20-point gap for the game’s final 16 minutes, leading by as many as 28 points on two occasions in the final 10 minutes.

Senior Jean Pietrzak (Westmont, Ill./ Westmont) connected on five of seven attempts from 3-point distance to finish the day with a careerhigh 22 points. Junior Iain Morison (Canberra, Australia/ St. Edmund’s) registered his first double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while seniors Landus Anderson (Quincy, Fla./ Florida State University School) and Jo Jo Ballestero (Anaheim, Calif./ Canyon) finished with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Should they dissolve the LLC?

DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free, plus she has a business giving music lessons. We formed an LLC last year when she had several students and was making over $3,000 a month, but that all changed when our first baby arrived. Now, she has only a few students, and they bring in around $700 per month. Should we dissolve the LLC? BEN DEAR BEN, First, congratulations on being debt-free and new parents. Happy New Year to you all!

In most states, the only upfront

cost for an LLC is the money you pay for the initial set up. There may be a small fee for a business license and subsequent annual renewal, but that generally doesn’t add up to much. Then, there’s the money you pay for filing your tax return on the LLC once a year. Even if you live in a state where there are other fees to consider, as long as the cost of maintaining the LLC wasn’t killing you, I’d recommend keeping it in place. You went to the trouble of opening it, and you just might use it again someday. Even if your wife is staying home with the baby, she just might be able to take on more students again as time goes by.

Just be reasonable and use common sense. If you spend $3,000 to stay open, and you’re making $700, you’d dissolve it, right? But as long as you don’t have fees that are making you cringe, I’d probably leave it in place.

money his entire life. Anytime he would get into trouble, my grandparents would always bail him out.

This time he came to my wife and I, asking for $350 to get out of overdraft at the bank. We’re trying to live on a budget and get control of our finances, and $350 would make things kind of tight at the moment.

What do you think we should do?

JEREMY DEAR JEREMY, I understand feeling an obligation to help your dad. But there’s a lesson here that dad needs to learn, and it’s something that goes much deeper than the money or helping out a family member.

You have to do the right thing, no matter how dad reacts to this. Right now, the right thing is taking care of your family and not putting them in jeopardy. So my answer to dad would be “no.” Another thing that needs to happen is for the definition of “help” to change. When you say he’s been irresponsible with money his whole life, giving him

$350 won’t help — and it will make you an enabler. Just handing him $350 will actually hurt him, and it will give him the idea he can continue being dumb with money and hit you up for cash anytime.

Like I said, I understand the pull of helping out a parent. So if you feel this is something you absolutely must do, I would advise making the $350 contingent on the fact that he begin and complete a financial

Vets group presents seminar on benefits Robert Hart of the American Association for Wartime Veterans (AAWV) presents a free informational seminar titled, “Aid and Attendance,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 24, at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Rd. Hart explains the benefits that are available to qualifying veterans, widowed spouses or disabled adult children. There are currently 26 residents at the Timbers receiving these benefits, and several others in the process of approval.

Since the Timbers opened a decade ago, there have been approximately 50 to 60 residents helped through this program.

Once awarded Aid and Attendance or Housebound status, veterans may obtain as much as $1,788 a month, surviving spouses $1,149 a month, and existing couples $2,120 a month.

Two veterans married to each other may obtain as much as $2,837 a month. In addition to in-

SEVEN COMPLETE, GRADUATE COUNTY’S VETERAN’S COURT PROGRAM Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is proud to announce that the Will County Veterans Court graduated seven veterans who have successfully completed the intensive program and are now living drug-free lives.

Veterans from several branches of the Armed Services and who now live in Joliet, Channahon, Manhattan and Romeoville graduated Jan. 11.

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the Veterans Court in 2012 to provide treatment, counseling and assistance to local veterans who have struggled with mental health and substance abuse disorders

since returning home from military operations.

“Veterans often suffer from substance abuse problems or mental health disorders stemming from their service to our Nation,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “When they come in contact with the criminal justice system, we have an obligation to acknowledge their service and provide them with the treatment and counseling necessary for them to regain their lives.”

In Veterans Court, the State’s Attorney’s Office partners with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, the Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County, the Center for Correctional Concerns, the Will County Health Department and the Will County Public Defender’s Office to provide veterans with the treatment and mental health services they need to complete the program and restore their lives.
