The village approved a proposal from D.E. Thompson for the Ridge Road water service installation and watermain abandonment project at its Tuesday, June 23, meeting.

The proposal is for $44,854 and will include the installation of 21 new water service lines from a new watermain on the north side of Ridge Road to homes on the south side of the street.

The public works department said disturbances in water service should be minimal, as it will not take long to attach the lines.

The winners were selected based on their dedication to community service, leadership abilities and overall good civic responsibility.

“These students are excellent role-models,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “It is an honor to recognize them for admirably giving their time to make our community and state a better place. I am certain they will continue to positively impact others.”

State’s stalemate alarms area voters Budget concerns top legislative town hall staff reporter

With news of a vetoed state budget hanging in the air, Will County voters were looking for answers during a legislative town hall meeting Monday night.

State sens. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Plainfield, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and reps. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, and Emily McAsey, D-Romeoville, hosted the meeting at the Bolingbrook-Fountaindale Library. The format was meant to be an informal opportunity for community members to ask legislators questions about government at the state level.

Illinois’ budget was on the minds of many in attendance. The officials spoke of a strained legislature that sorely needed to find a compromise, fielding questions from residents from Bolingbrook to Shorewood.

“The government has to work with a budget as does every other business or household,” area resident Cathy Weiss said. “We need checks and balances. There needs to be accountability for what money comes in and what money goes out.”

Weiss added that she thinks an independent audit agencies receiving state money would help control the spending.

Others at the meeting voiced their support for term limits in order to end what many in the crowded room considered the current “failed” way of doing business.

As the outcome of the state’s stalemate continues to play out, representatives from area social service agencies were on hand to express their concerns.

Patricia Bolden of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, representing one of the largest homeless shelters in the area, questioned how the agency can continue with potential drastic cuts to their funding.

Manley told Bolden that the legislators at Monday’s meeting are fighting for her and individuals who do not have a voice in the community.

“This is where we have to come together and look at spending and make cuts in the right places,” Manley said. “The government is not a business. We are a service provider, and it is the right of citizens to count on us to give the services they need.”

Just how that is done, is yet to be decided.

“Everyone in the Senate is fighting for their community,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “We have a very diverse district, with one end wanting one thing and the other end another. But I don’t speak to the audience, I speak to the truth.”

Bolingbrook resident Steve Prodehl asked the panel of lawmakers if they are in favor of budget cuts and where they would like to see those cuts made.

“Are you in favor of raising taxes, because that’s what we’re going to have to do,” he stated.

“Last night, families and communities across the Diocese of Joliet were affected by several instances of severe weather and tornados,” Bishop R. Daniel Conlon said in a release. “I ask for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to join me in prayer for all those who have been injured or whose homes and businesses were severely damaged in this storm.”

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner visited Coal City June 23, and issued a state disaster proclamation for

parts of Lee and Grundy counties.

Reports of high winds, no power and lot of lightning came in from surrounding suburbs, as well.

“Tornadoes and severe storms have once again caused devastation in northern Illinois communities,” Rauner said in a press release.

There were several tornadoes confirmed around the state, one EF-3 hitting Coal City, and another EF-2 further west hitting Sublette in Lee County. Braidwood, Kankakee and Herscher were also affected by high winds, though the tornado did not touch down in those communities.

A jury found a Lockport Township man guilty of firstdegree murder in connection with the 2011 shooting death of a man outside a Joliet boxing club.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s office said Jevon Lesley, 22, shot 18-year-old Anthony Fearn of Crest Hill outside the KO Zone Boxing Club on July 9, 2011. Prosecutors said Lesley opened fire after a fight broke out between rival gangs outside of the club. During the trial, witnesses testified that Lesley pulled the trigger at least five times.

“This was a vicious attack by a violent gangbanger who

demonstrated a ruthless disregard for the sanctity of human life,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a release.

Fearn and a friend attended a party at the club, located in the 200 block of Cass Street, earlier that evening. After the fight erupted, he climbed inside a minivan to escape the gunfire. A bullet struck Fearn in the left arm and lodged in his chest, nicking both his lung and his trachea.

Prosecutors said he was an innocent bystander who had no connection to either gang.

“Jevon Lesley gunned down an innocent young man in cold blood outside that boxing club,” Glasgow added. “This conviction takes a callous killer off our streets.”

During the four-day trial, five witnesses identified Lesley as the shooter. Lesley’s sentencing date is scheduled for Sept. 16. He faces 45 years to life in prison.

Rain fails to leave bad ‘Taste’

Annual festival a success despite rainy weather

Steady showers kept large crowds at bay Friday evening, when music headliner Cheap Trick took the stage for the traditionally strong opening night of the Taste of Joliet.

However, a clear day and moderate temperatures made for near-record crowds Saturday. And despite more more dark clouds Sunday, the rain held off for the band Plain White T’s closing performance.

“Mother Nature is in charge of everything,” joked Art Schultz Jr., vice president of the board of commissioners for the Joliet Park District, which sponsored the event. “We just plan for the best and hope people turn out.

Schultz said the festival had a bad day Friday, but crowds packed in Saturday for bands Parmalee and Big & Rich.

The area received about a half inch of rain Friday, according to National Weather Service totals.

Despite Sunday’s threatening clouds, rain was negligible.

“Friday is usually a bigger day and brings the 40- to 50-year old crowd, who like to eat and drink,” Schultz said. “But unfortunately, people stayed away.”

“Friday was a big bust here with all the rain, but Saturday it picked up,” he said. “The hard-core Cheap Trick fans still came out to hear ‘Surrender,’ but I think a lot of people that would have came out on Friday came out on Saturday instead.”

At the Buffalo Wild Wings tent, Shorewood general manager Eric Perez said his booth would still see increased sales this year despite the weather. By the end of the festival, he calculated that the restaurant would sell more than 10,000 wings.

“Friday was down some, but we had a nice steady flow [of customers],” Perez said, adding that business picked up tremendously on Saturday. “I looked at the photos on the Taste of Joliet website last

night and saw the aerial view -- it was wall-to-wall.”

Both Mahoney and Perez said their staffs enjoyed working the fest.

“We’re a mom-and-pop restaurant, so we have a good time,” Mahoney said. “We’ve seen a lot of good people and a lot of good locals out with their kids.”

Perez said the event gave his employees the chance to get out into the community.

“They work extremely hard and ask me when the next fest is, but we only do this one,” he said. “They get to listen to good music and see people that come to our restaurant in a different setting.”

Although the weather is unpredictable, Schultz said the Taste is ultimately about providing a fun weekend for the community.

“This event is great for people to connect, to get out and see people they haven’t seen in a while,” he said.

“With these new businesses coming in, comes job opportunity; not only temporary and warehouse but also up to the corporate level,” O’Dekirk said.

Semi-trailer truck congestion in the Joliet area was another issue raised during the mayor’s speech.

He said this was a major safety concern for Joliet residents and suggested a private and publicly funded bridge toll road for trucks that were entering and leaving the Joliet area on Houbolt Road and Interstate 80.

The newly elected mayor also brought up discussion on the controversial Evergreen Terrace

riverfront property from Western Avenue to Division Street.

He said his goals were to “bring living facilities to mixed income families.”

Four new redevelopment plans are going to be introduced to city council at a special council meeting, he added.

Richaun Holmes came into Lockport High School in 2007 as a 5-foot, 9-inch, undersized forward.

He is now a more than a foot taller, much stronger and a Philadelphia 76er.

He was selected in the second round, 37th overall, of the NBA draft.

Holmes is the second Porter drafted into the NBA, following Alando Tucker, who was drafted 29th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2007.

Holmes joins Jahlil Okafor from Chicago’s Whitney Young (No.3 overall selection) in Philly and follows Okafor and Frank Kaminsky III (No. 9/Hornets) as Illinois natives selected in the top 40 picks.

Holmes is the second Porter drafted into the NBA, following Alando Tucker, who was drafted 29th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2007 He is the 10th player from Bowling Green to be drafted in the NBA and the first since Antonio Daniels was the fourth overall selection by the

Vancouver Grizzlies in the 1997 draft.

Upon his debut, Holmes will become the 15th Falcon to play in the NBA. This season, the 6-foot, 10-inch Holmes was a first-team All-MidAmerican Conference selection and paced the Falcons in scoring (14.7 points), rebounding (8.0 rebounds), and blocked shots (83), and was named the MAC’s defensive player of the year.

Despite playing just three seasons at Bowling Green, Holmes is the school’s all-time blocked shot leader with 244, and also ranks 11th in career rebounds (652) and 35th in points (1,089).

Holmes came a long way from his freshman year at Lockport, when then-coach Lawrence Thompson, Jr. first met him.

“I knew when I met him and his parents his freshman year and saw the size of his brothers, I told his dad that I would do the best for him, because someone was going to get a bigger basketball player by the time he was 22 or 23 years old,” Thompson

He was eager to learn and eager to go once his sophomore year ended. His junior year he took advantage of it, and there were some pretty good players on that team his junior year. He worked hard in practice and learned and when his senior year came, he was able to handle the physicality and he already had instincts about blocking shots, so it was just the tip of the iceberg.”

After Lockport, Holmes played one season at Moraine Valley Junior College, where he helped the Cyclones to an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and NJCAA Region IV championship plus a trip to the national tournament. He ranked No. 1 in individual blocks per game (averaging 5.633), averaged 19.3 points per game and was named NJCAA Division II first team All-American and Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Player of the Year.

“He thought he could play Division-I basketball and we knew it wasn’t going to happen right away because he was still developing,” Thompson said. “A lot of mid majors don’t want to take a kid right out of

Locals highlight Voyager Media All-Area softball team

The word dominant is often thrown around too much in the world of sports.

However,whenitcomestoDowners Grove South’s Caroline Hedgcock, it may be an understatement.

Thejuniorlostonlyonegameonthe pitching rubber this season, winning 15. Her lone loss was a 5-4 defeat in the IHSA Class 3A Supersectional to eventual state champion Marist.

On the season, she posted a 1.12 ERA with 136 strikeouts in 94 innings At the plate, Hedgcock batted .543, posting 57 hits in 105 at bats. She scored 45 runs, had 14 doubles, 5 triples, 10 home runs and she drove in a school-record 68 runs.

For her success, she is the 2015 Voyager Media Softball Player of the Year.

“She had a wonderful year for us, not only pitching, but also hitting.

She hit third in our lineup and was instrumental to our offense,” said South coach Ron Havelka. “When she was on, not many teams could hit her very well, in fact there were many games where the ball was never even hit out of the infield.”

Hedgcock, a University of Maryland commit, had a rare ability to separate her mental game in the circle and still focus at the plate.

“There wasn’t really one thing,” she said. “I focus a lot on pitching and hitting is extra for me, but when they both are working, it’s a blast for me.”

Other members of the All-Area team are:

Steph Abello The senior catcher leaves Benet as owner of the IHSA’s all-time record for career home runs (60) and is the career school record-holder for RBI with 211. She had 13 homers and had 44 RBI to go along with a .379 average.

Jen Ames Joliet West senior second baseman batted .435, with 13 home runs, 30 RBI, 32 runs scored with an on base percentage of .474. Ames struck out only nine times in 108 at bats. In the field, she posted a .957 fielding percentage.

“Jen has been a tremendous leader for our team this year,” said West coach Heather Suca. “She has both power and speed on offense. She has incredible range at second base. Her hard work and dedication has made her a key asset to our team.”

The sophomore right-hander combined with Hedgcock to give Downers South perhaps the best one-two pitching duo in the state.

Buresch’s stellar numbers included an 18-1 record, a 1.36 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 108 innings.

Maya Caballero

in Chicago was an All-GCAC pick this year who led the Bandits in eight statistical categories, including batting average (.448), stolen bases (22) and runs scored (36).

Maria Connell The sophomore catcher from Plainfield Central batted .403 with 33 RBI, four homer and 12 doubles. She added a .974 fielding average.

Brooklyn Daly

The senior All-CSL South pitcher and outfielder was the Wolves’ No. 1 pitcher (10 victories in 2015) but also was one of the club’s leading hitters with a .420 average and six homers.

She struck out only six times all season.

Daly, a sophomore from Plainfield Central went 26-4 on the mound with a 1.75 ERA and 186 strikeouts. At the plate she hit .385 with 15 RBI, eight doubles and a pair of homers.

She helped carry JCA to a regional title, both with the bat and her right arm.

On the season, she batted .386 with a .466 OBS and a .632 slugging percentage. She had 26 RBI, 44 hits, five home runs and scored 31 runs.

In the circle, she posted a 17-8 record with a 2.18 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP. She had 174 strikeouts and only 38 walks.

“She had a very good season, especially when you look at our conference and early on we got beat up by some good teams like Marist and Benet,” said JCA coach Dave Douglas.

Plainfield Central senior hit .378 with 10 home runs, 33 RBI and 10 doubles.

She posted a .466 average for Lockport. On the season, she tallied five doubles, two triples, six home runs, while collecting 29 RBI and scoring 30 runs. Defensively, Hollatz posted a .962 fielding percentage.

“She put up great stats against the best teams in the area,” said Minooka coach Mark Brown.

Heading to the front, the first hole is a par-4 dogleg left where you can run out of room past the fairway if you don’t bend it left. A tight green with bunkers on both sides await.

The par-5 second hole is another reachable hole in two if you can carry the bunker off the drive and hit the tight fairway. There is water to the left of the green and bunkers to the right.

That leads up to a steep uphill par-3 third hole, where taking two more clubs for the distance is needed.

The fourth hole has a tree in the fairway, making you choose a tight right path or a more forgiving left path. However, going left leads to a tougher angle on the approach shot to the green.

The fifth hole is a par-4 that features a tight green to hit. A short sixth hole follows, where you may get greedy and go for the green. That can lead to a much tougher second shot as there is rough between the fairway and green, which plays uphill over a bunker, making that shot blind.

A par-3 with a large bunker makes

up the seventh hole and a tight driving hole surrounded by trees makes up the eighth hole. The ninth hole is a long par-4 that has a very tight portion of the fairway, making you want to keep your drive in front of it.

All in all, this was definitely one of my favorite courses I’ve played. As mentioned earlier, it is difficult but fair. There are good shots to be made and chances to take. However, the big difficulty comes in scrambling.

If you don’t put yourself in the right position, the shots are much harder.

For instance, on most courses if you short-side yourself around the green, there are several ways for a casual golfer to still get it close to the hole.

Here, that isn’t the case. Several times as an average golfer you have to take your medicine and just try to keep the ball on the green. There isn’t much room to allow your ball to roll; you need to be able to spin it and stop it. It makes watching the pros make it look easy all the more impressive.

Rounds at TPC Deere Run cost on average around $100, which is very fair for a TPC course. It is a course well worth the two-hour drive from Chicago and it would be a good idea to make a trip out of it and play it twice in two days because it is one of those courses where you can learn some things for the next time you play it. I would love to make a two-day trip out of it in the future.

A Voyager Media all-area team member for the second straight year, Richardson last summer verbally committed to Michigan after previously committing to Illinois. The senior captain hit .448 this season with 32 RBI for Maine South, which won 20 games this season.

kristin lea There wasn’t an easy out in Downers South’s lineup this season, and the junior outfielder-infielder was chief among them. Lea, a junior, hit .574 and totaled 81 hits—a new single-season school record, eclipsing the old mark of 72 set by University of Wisconsin star Marissa Mersch in 2012. In addition, her 28 doubles tied her for the most two-base hits in a single season in IHSA history, and she was second on the team in RBI with 59 while hitting in the No. 2 spot.

megan loBianco The junior’s switch to shortstop from third base this season was flawless, as was her production at bat for Downers South. One of three Mustang batters to hit over .500 this season (.526), LoBianco slugged eight homers (second on the team) and drove in 57 runs.

megan lotarski Bolingbrook senior dominated on the mound to the tune of a 12-8 record with a .66 ERA in 137 innings pitched and broke the 200 strikeout mark in the playoffs. She will play next season at Western Illinois University.

katie polaski Polaski is a leadoff, left-handed slap hitter who took over that role last

Holmes is the first Moraine Valley alum ever selected in the NBA draft.

After his season was over this year at Bowling Green, Holmes was invited to play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Portsmouth, Va., a tournament is the top 64 seniors in the country prior to the NBA draft.

It was there he jumped on the scouts’ radar.

“He has taken advantage of opportunity,” Thompson said. “His work ethic proved so much, that when he was invited to Portsmouth, he took advantage of it. His size and length are very intriguing to the NBA,

Sophomore pitcher from Joliet West went 15-7 on the season with a 2.2 ERA. At the plate, she batted .387, with three home runs, 17 RBI and 25 runs scored.

“This was Kiley’s second year on the mound for us. She was able to keep teams off balance throughout the season,” Suca said. “In addition to leading our team on the mound she was a huge asset on offense both at the plate and on the bases.”

The senior third baseman for Downers North belted six homers and hit .384. She was an All-West Suburban Conference pick, and will be playing collegiately at the University of Indianapolis.

alysia rodriguez Senior shortstop for Joliet West batted .449, with 13 home runs, 29 RBI, 29 runs scored, and a .495 OBP. “Alysia was a key part to our offense,” Suca said. “She has more power then I have seen in most high school athletes. In addition she made outstanding plays at shortstop consistently. Alysia’s work ethic over the last four years has paid off with her having an outstanding senior year.”

zoe varsBergs Emma’s younger sister, the sophomore first baseman established herself not only as one of Downers North’s top hitters in 2015, but as the focal point of the Trojans’ lineup for the next two seasons. She sported a.461 average with two homers, 24 RBI and a .506 on-base percentage.

Bianca vozenilek Vozenilek, a sophomore pitcher from Plainfield East, shut out Downers North to win the regional title. She went 20-9 with 206 strikeouts and a 1.82 ERA.

Holmes’ teammate at Lockport and Moraine Valley and a conference rival in the MAC, former Porter Karrington Ward was not drafted, but is looking to get a shot to make a roster. He was invited to camps prior to the draft.

Last season, Ward averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game at Eastern Michigan University.

“If he keeps hitting down open jump shots along with his athleticism, he could find himself on someone’s NBA roster even if he is not drafted,” Thompson said.

“He has the athleticism, it will come down to the right fit and that is what it always comes down to in the NBA. They have to like you and you have to

be able to do what they want.”

Thompson said he is proud of both of his former pupils.

“The goal is to get better when you leave high school, the goal is not to play your best basketball while you are in high school,” he said. “I want you to be pretty good in high school because that’s helps the team and makes people want to come see you play. The ceiling has to be where they are trying to get to now. If you have that kind of talent and you work at it and listen to your coaches and trust that people will put you in a good position to help your team and help yourself.

“I am proud of both of them, not only for their athletic ability, but for getting their degree.”

Area nonprofits at an impasse on state budget State has until July 1 to approve a budget and avoid a shutdown

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed a budget submitting to him by the state legislature last week, moving the state closer to a government shut down.

Local not-for-profit representatives held a press conference June 25 at the WillGrundy Center for Independent Living in Joliet to address the problems they say would be created by such a shut down.

The state has until July 1 to approve a budget and avoid a shutdown, which non profit representatives say would cause many problems. Since many senior centers are state-funded, this is a particularly difficult situation for those facilities.

Several representatives were

present at the conference, and many seemed frustrated and upset by the state budget impasse.

“None of the agencies can survive without a budget,” Cheryl Lockwood, a representative of the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, said. “They can do it for a while. But, many of them already have lines of credit, many of them have already been going payroll to payroll.”

Other representatives shared concerns workers would leave if a shutdown occurred, meaning new workers would have to be trained and that would take up to 3 months. Additionally, representatives said people in their facilities could become less confident in their care, which would cause even more problems in their facilities.

Many representatives added that they have not received the proper amount of state funding in years, saying a possible shutdown and no cash flow would cause many facilities to suffer.

“They’ve used pensions like credit cards, and now we have a big problem,” she said.

Though definitive answers weren’t given, the officials pointed out that they were holding these town halls to hear residents input and made a commitment to bring their concerns to the forefront.

“We continue to make spending cuts and who we are as legislators are the people who have come to serve you—our community,” McAsey said.

Though McGuire likened the legislature to drunks careening from problem to problem, he still is trying to remain optimistic for the future.

“Though the obvious problem, it is important to note that work still is getting done,” he said.

He knows that people want predictability and stability.

“The retiree wants to know if he or she can buy a car,” McGuire said. “The university president wants to know if they can build a building. The

CEO wants to know if they can invest.”

Bertino-Tarrant agreed. “We are all trying to do the right thing,” she said. “You have to understand that it is a hard process.”

McAsey noted work done to negotiate an agreement with area manufacturers and landfills in handling electronics recycling, finding a solution for the immediate future. In addition, she spoke of the constant battle to create further dialogue regarding the heroin crisis, creating a medical formulation designed to deter abuse.

Community Development Director Karen James gave a presentation on the planned unit development, which would include a gas station, car wash, convenience store, and fueling canopies for gas and diesel pumps on a 3.3-acre piece of land at the intersection of Route 52 and River Road.

The presentation included an overview of the building’s size, different architectural styles that would be included, landscaping planned for the building, and staff comments and review of the proposal.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mayor Richard Chapman asked residents to keep an open mind regarding the building plan but reassured them that the board would listen to their concerns.

Lonna Jokaitis, who is a resident of the Hunt Club, a subdivision close to the planned project, was one of the residents who gathered 560 signatures of residents opposed to the project.

Many citizens were also concerned about the planned hours for the gas station, which would be open 24/7. Liquor would also be sold at the location.

There were a few supporters of the project, including several business owners and the owner of the land where the Lenny’s Gas N’ Wash is being proposed.

Mike Rows, who owns the land, said he purchased the property 13 years ago.

“I’m happy to do business with [Lenny], and I’m happy to know him.”

However, the majority of

“I can’t believe we’re even here tonight to discuss something as vile and preposterous as this development,” said Jean Garrison, who was particularly outraged by the proposal. “I don’t understand why [the board] is trying to jam this down our throats.”

The gas station would be built on the corner of River Road and Route 52, which several residents said is already filled with traffic and difficult to travel through.

Kay Novak was concerned that people pulling out of the gas station would create even more traffic on the street.

“If you start having people pull out, it’s going to be a traffic

nightmare,” she said.

Several other concerns cited by residents included the availability of alcohol, the reputation of the business owner, and the ideals and image that Shorewood represents.

“My first reaction was to sell our house,” Dave Pikeman said.

“I’ve heard that these business draw a lower class of people.”

Residents said they enjoy Shorewood because it is a small town, adding that they want it to stay that way.

“We moved here because of the charm,” Ruth Gabor said. “It’s [the board’s] responsibility to preserve Shorewood’s image.

Trustee Stevan Brockman also said he was against the proposal.

A resident of the Hunt Club subdivision, Brockman said he’s been bombarded with phone calls and received threats.

He apologized to the board later in the meeting for stating his position, but said he felt it would ease some of the pressure he was receiving from residents.

Chapman said he sincerely appreciated residents coming out to express their opinion.

“You have been heard,” he added.

The board did not take any action on the proposal but will address the project again at its July 14 meeting. Village staff recommended approval of the project.

Will-Grundy Medical Clinic invites community to celebrate Anniversary party set for July 9 The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic will hold the wellness program’s “Get Healthy & Be Well” anniversary party July 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The party will be held in the clinic’s parking lot at 213 E. Cass St. in Joliet Programs Manager Kristin Haller said that the entire community

is welcome to come for food and fitness.

“This is an opportunity for the Clinic to showcase the free exercise classes we offer and motivate people to make positive lifestyle changes,” she said in a release.

This free, family-friendly event includes Zumba and fitness demonstrations, as well as other

useful health information.

Health check screenings such as blood pressure and body mass index, healthy food samples, face painting, music, children’s activities and much more will also be offered at the party.

Participants are encouraged to walk to the event or park on the streets, as the clinic lot will be full

for the event.

There is additional parking in downtown Joliet parking decks.

Community members can also come at 5:30 p.m. to join the weekly Zumba class.

Everyone is encouraged to visit the fair or call the clinic for a oneon-one appointment with a health and wellness counselor.
