The weekend started off cold and wet, but the chilly temperatures couldn’t dampen the holiday spirit for the hundreds of area residents who showed up in downtown Joliet for the annual “Light up the Holidays” festival and parade. The day once again served as the official kick-off to the Christmas season, with family fun and festivities for everyone who made their way downtown Nov. 27. Light up the Holidays included activities for families at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, a movie at the historic Rialto Square Theater, events at downtown businesses and carolers entertaining the crowd in Van Buren Plaza. The Shorewood Village Board last week approved an ordinance authorizing the disposal of surplus property.

Public Works Superintendent Chris Drey presented the ordinance at the board’s Nov. 24 meeting, describing it as similar to one the village had in the past. “This ordinance will allow the village administrator to dispose of surplus property,” he said. According to board documents, several vehicles will be disposed of, including a 2002 Ford Van with 188,000 miles, a 2005 American Hauler, a 2005 Vermeer Chipper, a Vibropac roller and concrete saw.

Documents stated that the village received maximum returns in the past by sending these types of vehicles and equipment to auction. “We recommend the same be done with these vehicles and equipment,” the document stated. Drey said the 2002 Ford Van is no longer used, while the American Hauler will be replaced with a recently purchased vehicle. The board unanimously approved the ordinance and waived a second reading.

The machine will be put back into service in the spring but a date has not yet been determined. Additionally, Waste Management’s lawn waste pick-up ended last week.
