Major Benjamin Sanders has served 19 years in the U.S. Marine Corps On Nov. 11, Sanders was the guest speaker at Troy Middle School’s Veterans Day ceremony, one of several ceremonies held at various schools in Troy Community School District 30-C. Currently stationed with the 4th Reconnaissance Unit in Joliet, Sanders has served in Bosnia, Afghanistan and twice in Iraq. During the ceremony, he discussed what it meant to be a veteran with Troy students. Approximately 40 veterans attended the ceremony, and Sanders thanked them for “crossing lines [they] did not have to cross.” The Troy Middle School band and choir also performed several patriotic songs during the assembly. Following the Veterans Day ceremony, students returned to their classrooms to write letters and send Christmas cards to service members and to veterans embarking on honor flights.
