Kiwanis donates $11K to pediatric unit Group donates $11K, 50 teddy bears to Presence Saint Joseph Medical The Kiwanis Club of Shorewood has donated $11,000 and 50 teddy bears to support young patients in Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s pediatric unit.

President Faith Ann Varga and several club members stopped by the center to deliver the bears just in time for the holiday season.

In accordance with the Kiwanis mission, the Shorewood Kiwanis Club seeks to directly benefit local children and families and has made a special commitment to support the center’s pediatric program.

The volunteer group of 13 members hosted its fourth annual “Glitz and Glitter Casino Night” last April, which featured gaming tables and auctions. The event raised

$11,000 to benefit the pediatric program at PSJMC. The club has also committed to regularly delivering additional teddy bears to the unit.

“We are so fortunate to have an ongoing partnership with the Kiwanis Club,” said Kathleen Rhine, regional president and CEO at PSJMC. “Their support goes a long way towards making our patients feel welcomed and loved. Together we will make a difference and help the children in our community be all they can be through the gift of good health.”

The medical center is home to the only children’s emergency department in Will County. The center provides specialized smaller equipment needed for pediatric patients, as well as a child-friendly atmosphere.

Troy school board members earn awards

Program recognizes service, participation of members beyond local districts

Troy Community School District 30-C School Board President Mark Griglione and Vice President Cynthia Rasmussen Grabavoy received awards this month from the Illinois Association of School Board’s Master Board Member Program.

Griglione earned awards to maintain his master board

member status, and Rasmussen Grabavoy earned the FellowLeadership award, which is given for participation in a series of workshops and other opportunities for school board learning and networking.

“Troy 30-C is fortunate to have a board of education that models learning and commitment for its students and community,” Superintendent Todd Koehl said.

The IASB Master Board Member Program recognizes the service and participation of school board members in various IASB activities within and beyond their local districts.

Plainfield North mourns beloved teacher Family, friends remember slain teacher as caring and compassionate

Susan Triplett-Cunningham was a physical education and health teacher at Plainfield North High School, but her students knew her simply as Miss Trip.

“She was the teacher everyone went to when they had a problem,” said Jacob Gansz, a 2014 graduate of Plainfield North. “She always told me to keep going, to get through it, and you’ll have a good life.”

Gansz was one of several former students who spoke during a candlelight vigil held Oct. 21 to honor the life of their favorite teacher. More than 300 current and former students, faculty, friends and family gathered to mourn Susan Cunningham, who was fatally stabbed the previous evening at her home in the 25000 block of Prairie Grove Court.

A short time later, Craig J. Cunningham, Susan’s husband and suspect in her murder, walked into traffic on Interstate 55 and was killed. Both deaths are still under investigation.

It was in the shadow cast by this tragedy that the Plainfield North community gathered Wednesday evening; their goal was to bring light to the darkest time in the school’s 10-year history and begin the process of mourning their beloved Miss Trip.

Staff photo of Susan TriplettCunningham. that’s so tragic, something that’s so unexpected,” asked John Ciesniewski, pastor at Community Christian Church in Plainfield, where Cunningham attended. “I want to suggest that we at least start the dialogue tonight and we continue that dialogue throughout the week and throughout the month... I think that’s the first step in mourning her loss.”

Cunningham came to Plainfield North in 2006, but her employment at District 202 began at Plainfield High School Central Campus in 2002. Superintendent of Schools Lane Abrell hired Cunningham back then, when he was the principal at Plainfield Central. “[She was] a valued member of the staff, great with kids and a very positive person,” Abrell said in a statement. “All District 202 employees mourn Sue’s passing.”

That sentiment was shared by current Plainfield North principal Raymond Epperson, who said he’s impressed with the caring and support his school displayed following the tragedy.

“The staff pulled together today to support the students, and I see students supporting each other,”

During the vigil, students passed around copies of “Trips Tips,” a list of self-empowering habits she encouraged her students to follow on their life’s journey. Among them, “Dream big,” “Find something you like to do and work hard,” “Don’t keep unhealthy relationships,” and “Do what you can to help others.”

Epperson said the school is planning to put up a banner containing “Trips Tips,” as a way to honor her place at Plainfield North and pass along her inspiring words to future students.

Cunningham’s brother, Dan Brown, and closest friend, Elly Stonis, also spoke during the vigil. They said the outpouring of support they’ve experienced is evidence of the positive impact their sister and friend had at the school.

“I hope that you all remember her “Trips Tips” and everything that was listed because they meant the world to her,” a visibly shaken

Stonis told the crowd. “Everything that she listed... is truly how she wanted you to lead your life. She wanted you to value your own life and yourself in your own unique, special way.”

Shaye Soto was one of several students who remembered Miss Trip, but the 2015 graduate of Plainfield North said she was much more than a teacher.

“She didn’t need to be connected to us by blood; she was our family,” Soto said. “She was the best person I’ve ever known...and I know that for most of you it was the same.

I don’t think that I’ll ever meet anyone as great and beautiful and kind hearted and optimistic as her.”

Soto added that she taught all

of them valuable lessons during her time at the school and hopes that the community can take something away from her tragic death.

“We can all only learn to take nothing for granted and love those who are close to us,” she said. “Sue was taken from us way too soon.

For many of us, life will never be the same, but we are determined to carry Sue’s legacy on for years and years to come.”

Memorial visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2-6 p.m. at Community Christian Church, 1635 Emerson Lane, Naperville.

Ciesniewski will officiate a celebration of Cunningham’s life immediately following visitation at 6 p.m.

Fighting domestic violence is everyone’s responsibility October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but domestic violence knows no boundaries

“She became a victim of domestic violence; a thing she taught us all about.”

Those words came from Shaye Soto, a 2015 graduate of Plainfield North High School and former student of Susan Triplett-Cunningham, who was tragically murdered Oct. 20 in what police have called a “domestic-related homicide.”

Soto spoke during a candlelight vigil held at the school in memory of her former teacher. And while the details of her teacher’s death are not yet official, the incident underscores a sobering truth: domestic violence is closer to all of us than we’d like to admit and its victims are often discouraged from seeking help.

Police suspect that Cunningham’s husband fatally stabbed his wife before walking into traffic and taking his own life. This tragedy is all too real for the friends and family of the victim, yet its timing and impact provide an opportunity for all people to reflect on a problem that is all too common throughout our society.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The month is a time when people across the country unite to remember and empower victims, while raising awareness of the effects domestic violence has on

families across the country. Officially, the month is centered around three themes: mourning those who have died, celebrating those who have survived and connecting those who are working to end domestic violence.

“During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we reaffirm our dedication to forging an America where no one suffers the hurt and hardship that domestic violence causes -- and we recommit to doing everything in our power to uphold the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse,” President Obama said Sept. 30 in a proclamation commemorating National Domestic Violence Awareness.

In 1994, congress passed the Violence Against Women Act, symbolizing that dedication and bringing to light the pervasiveness of domestic violence in America. The act also set aside funds for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women and allowed for civil redress in cases that go unprosecuted.

But sadly, the act has neither eradicated domestic violence from our culture nor convinced some that it is a serious problem -- as demonstrated by the political fight to reauthorize the VAWA in 2013 because of its inclusion of American Indians, illegal immigrants and homosexuals.

Domestic violence and abuse affect all types of people and comes in many forms: verbal, emotional, psychological, sexual and physical. According to

statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes, and 1 in 5 women have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner at some point in their life.

Men are also the victims of domestic violence, with 1 in 4 suffering physical violence and 1 in 7 suffering severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Additionally, 72 percent of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner and 94 percent of those victims are female.

Despite these tragic statistics, our society has chosen to turn its head and ignore this troubling and inconvenient truth.

We do this by still praising athletes who have been convicted of rape or spousal abuse or by choosing to forget their crimes, as long as they continue to perform at a high level. We do this by ignoring signs of abuse at work or in other public settings, telling ourselves that it’s a “personal” matter and failing to listen to victim’s cries for help. We do this by perpetuating a culture of patriarchy that teaches suppression and subjugation of qualities deemed “feminine,” soliciting from some a violent reaction when the realities of the 21st century clash with social “norms” that have been reinforced from a young age.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but domestic violence knows no boundaries. I choose to confront this ever-present problem by being aware of its existence. Will you?

JCHS teacher honored by state board Joliet Central High School teacher Dale West received an Award of Merit in the category of Early Career Educator at the Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel Awards Banquet in Normal, Illinois, Oct. 17.

West was 1 of 250 outstanding educators across Illinois receiving an award. Local school

district leaders and members of school communities nominate candidates for recognition. A committee of peers, organized through the ISBE, chooses the award winners. The committee represents statewide education organizations and includes former award winners.

West is in his fifth year at

Central as a Career and Technical Education teacher in the STEM Academy. At JTHS, he is a member of the Instructional Leadership Team, the School Walkthrough Team and he has facilitated school technology summer boot camp along with blended learning professional development sessions for staff.

Troy Middle School places 1st at academic bowl The Troy Middle School Academic Bowl teams took first place at the Providence Catholic High School Academic Bowl earlier this month.

Team sponsor and science teacher Barbara Will-Henn said both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams did an outstanding job at the event. The eighth-grade team took

first place with 198 points scored, and the seventh-grade team took first place with 168 points scored.

Several TMS team members also took home individual honors, as well eighth graders Mary Dixon placed first in language arts, Snehal Saini placed first in social studies, Imaad Junaidi placed first in math, Summit Kumar placed second in

math, Frank Sklar placed second in science, Alyssa Conde placed second place in language arts, and Mackenzie Kaluza placed fifth in language arts.

On the seventh grade team, Tabitha Barowsky placed first in math, Julianna Crompton placed first in science and Julie Wang placed fifth in math.

Engine Team to host open house Prep for 2015 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Contest underway The Joliet Township High School Engine Team will host an open house Oct. 29 from 7 to 8 p.m. in Joliet Central’s automotive shop, 201 E. Jefferson St. The open house is being held to prepare for the 2015 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Contest. It is free and open to the public.

“The teams have been working around the clock, preparing for the national competitions that will be held in November in Las Vegas and December in Indianapolis,” said JTHS Automotive Instructor and Sponsor Sean Reisdorf.

At the open house, the qualifying teams will complete a practice run that will be judged by a panel of special guests.

Students will disassemble and reassemble a Chevy V-8 race engine using only hand tools following all manufacture procedures. Teams are timed and the engine is expected to run once assembled.

The JTHS engine teams are ranked in the top 40 nationally and are competing for post-secondary education scholarships to further automotive education.

leads Flyers Crest Hill native is fifth-year senior for Lewis volleyball team

The Lewis University women’s volleyball team has had a good deal of success this year at 211, 9-0 in the GLVC and has been doing so with multiple locals on the team, including three from the Voyager Media coverage area.

One is senior Alexis Davito, a Crest Hill native and Lockport graduate, who is in her fifth year with the team.

“Being the only fifth-year senior is weird but it is kind of nice,” Davito said. “Having a lot of freshmen and new blood on the court and the chemistry and nice. I think we have a good chance to do some good things.”

After years of looking up to seniors, she is now that leader.

She hopes she can have the positive impact on others that those before her have had on her.

“I’m trying,” Davito said of being a leader. “Our team is unique and everyone tries to take their own leadership. I think the program has really helped me grow so I just want everyone else to do the same.”

Davito has been able to play in front of friends and family over the years and she would have it no other way.

“The parent base is amazing so we always have fans,” Davito said.

“So being local is great because

we always feel like we’re home.

We’re never far away. My brother goes here as well, so the whole family is here. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. I always have someone here supporting me.”

While Davito has had a good amount of success while on campus at Lewis, there is one more thing she would like to accomplish before her career is done after the season.

“Making it to the Sweet 16 would be great,” Davito said.

“Since I’ve been here, we haven’t made it out of first round of regionals and it is about time we do. I think we just need to want it and play that way.”

For the season Davito leads the team with 227 kills and a .332 hitting percentage, along with 37 aces, also a team high.

With Davito finishing up her career, the future of the Flyers’ offense may be Plainfield freshman Elizabeth Hyland.

Hyland has come out of the gates fast, starting as a freshman, playing all six rotations. She has 225 kills, 16 aces, 242 digs and 34 blocks.

“I’ve had so much support from not only the coaches but the entire team,” Hyland said.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this without all my teammates on the sidelines.”

Even though she has started from the beginning, there have been adjustments.

Joliet West advances to regional championship

There is a rule of thumb in sports like soccer and hockey, that if you keep shooting and keep getting chances, eventually a goal will go in.

That was not the case last week for Joliet West soccer as the No. 5 seed Tigers fell 2-0 in the Joliet West Regional final to No. 1 Normal.

Ironmen sophomore goalie stopped everything kicked at him in his first varsity start in goal.

“Their keeper played extremely well. I can’t count how many wonderful saves he made on us.

We kept putting the ball on frame, on frame, on frame and he kept responding,” said West coach Patrick Korthauer. “He moved side to side extremely well and up top. We tried shots from up close, from a distance it just didn’t make a difference.”

Korthauer was happy with the team’s performance despite the loss.

“I thought we played extremely well, they are a good team,” he said.

“I am very proud of the effort they had and they didn’t give up until the very end and when you see the end in sight that is hard to fight through it. Defensively we have been so strong all season.”

It was Emmanuel Ndjoli who

tallied both goals for Normal.

Despite the seeds, Korthauer said the Tigers (13-9-1) believed they could win.

“There was an expectation to win tonight,” he said. “We didn’t really look at the rankings. We knew we had a good team and if we played our best, the chips would fall our way – it just didn’t happen tonight.”

What Korthauer is most proud of is the senior class and what they have given to the program to have the Tigers in a position to compete for a regional title.

“We have a lot of seniors on this team and they have done a lot of work laying the ground work for this program. The last two years we have been on such an upswing and it is because of that class,” he said.

“We are going to do our part with the underclassmen to continue the pace and expectation of winning that they set.”

Korthauer said he knows what the whole team feels, but hopes they realize what they accomplished this season.

“It hurts right now,” he said. “But I know they can look back on this game the season and be extremely proud because we are of them.”

To get to the regional title game, West defeated East Moline United 1-0. Normal had to escape Joliet Central with a 4-3 win in overtime to reach the game.

TENNIS Locally, there were several tennis players who competed at the state meet last week.

Joliet’s Eilen Carey went 4-2 in the tournament, falling in the 6th round of the consolation bracket.

She opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lindsay Huang of Urbana University High and a 6-0, 6-0 win over Shelby Jones of Alton Marquette.

After a loss to Cammy Frei of New Trier, 6-0-6-3, she defeated Jessie Mitchell of Payton 6-1, 6-4 and Christina Su, of Normal

Kory Hayden and Joliet West fell to Normal in the regional University. She then fell to Samantha Choi of Wheaton Warrenville South 6-3, 6-1 to end her run.

For JCA, Nina Bertino and the doubles team of Maddie Bauer and McCoy Hutchison also fell in the 6th round of the consolution.

Bertino won three straight to open, defeating Skye Palumbo of Lake Park (6-0, 6-1), Hannah Hougland of Hampshire (6-1, 6-1), Caroline Maltby of Glenbard West (6-3, 6-3). Bertino then fell 6-0, 6-1 to Michelle Bacalla of Niles North and 7-5, 6-2 to Jelena Vujanic of Elk Grove.

On the doubles side, Bauer and Hutchison had the same fate going 3-2. They opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Julia Riddle and Claire Meyer over York a 6-1, 6-0 win over Molly Gillis and Jill Johnson of Washington and a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Alexandra Zoubareva and Elizabeth Ferdman of Stevenson. The tandem then fell 6-3, 6-0 to Stefana Vasic and

Lahari Yelamanchili, of Lyons and 7-5, 6-4 to Brittany Henry and Kaela Mack of HomewoodFlossmoor.

Lockport’s players were all eliminated in the third round of consolation bracket.

Tomi Jo Mansel lost Sarah Hackman of Wauconda 6-0, 6-1 before beating Brenna Hogan of Rock Island Alleman and Hannah Blythe of Vandalia, both 6-0, 6-1 before falling 6-2, 6-2 to Hallie Leblebijian of Lane.

Minooka earns way into playoffs, JCA wins ESCC

CLASS 8A In the state’s largest class, the IHSA has gone away from the geographic pairings and are a true 1-32 seeded bracket this season.

There are three undefeated teams in 8A, led by No. 1 overall seed Loyola. Second seed Huntley and No. 3 Edwardsville are the other 9-0 teams.

Records aside, No. 8 HomewoodFlossmoor still remains the team to beat in Class 8A. A loss on a field goal at the end of regulation dropped the state’s top-ranked team to 8-1. The Vikings would get a chance to prove they are still the best in a potential quarterfinal tilt with Loyola.

MINOOKA Record: 5-4 Consecutive appearances: 1 Week 1: No. 31 Minooka at No. 2 Huntley - 1pm, Saturday, Oct. 31 Outlook: The Indians needed a win over Plainfield North in the final game of the season just to earn its fifth win and be playoff eligible. It is Minooka’s first time in the playoffs since 2011. The Indians also have to send a card to Lockport for its win over Joliet West in week 9. The Porter win gave Minooka that much-needed one more point and eliminated Joliet West, another potential 5-4 qualifier.

They will have to deal with Blake Parzych and the Minooka defense.

“I worked my butt off and if it happened, it happened,” she said. “My goal was obviously to start, but I was going to be happy wherever I was put and needed.”

A big thrill for the freshman is playing in front of her home

“It’s awesome, I love it,” Hyland said. “I love looking up and seeing familiar faces in the crowd. I don’t think I could go to a place far away where my family wouldn’t be able to go. It is great to have them up there cheering

me on.”

Going forward, Hyland knows there are areas where she can improve on.

“I think I just need to relax and play my game,” Hyland said. “I can over-think things. I want my serve-receive and my hitting

spots to improve.”

Davito feels she doesn’t need to do much mentoring with Hyland.

“She is actually my little sister on the team,” Davito said of Hyland. “I think she is incredible.

I don’t need to do much leading with her. She kind of takes it upon herself to do it herself.

She does a great job of not only watching girls in front of her but establishing herself.”

Moving to the back row, junior defensive specialist Carolyn Nojiri of Downers Grove has been happy with the season so far. For the year she has 48 digs.

“It’s been good,” Nojiri said.

“To have two freshmen setters, it has been really good to see how they have meshed with the hitters.”

While she has seen some action this volleyball season, Nojiri is most known for being a two-sport collegiate athlete, as she is also a softball player and had the second highest average on the team last year.

But, playing two sports doesn’t come easy.

“It has its ups and downs,” Nojiri said. “I haven’t been to a lot of softball stuff lately because it has been hectic with volleyball.

But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is the best of both worlds to play both of the sports I love.”

Playing two sports does make things harder in the fall though as she misses the fall softball season.

“It does because I am missing the fall season of softball because I’m in season for volleyball,” Nojiri said. “But I work my butt off in the offseason for the upcoming season, so I don’t feel I am behind, actually.”

The defense needs to find its midseason form and force a few turnovers, while the offense needs to stay clear of turnovers and maintain possession of the ball to keep the defense from tiring as South looks for its first win

in the playoffs since 2010.

Meanwhile, Barrington has lit up the scoreboard this year, scoring 357 points. However, it is willing to give up points as well, allowing 203. The Broncos have allowed double digit points in all but one game this year.

The offense has scored at least 24 points in every game, including 40 or more points six times. It will be a contrasting game between the two teams to determine who will move on. The winner will face the winner of Marist (5-4) and Notre Dame (81).

The move many were hoping would take place, with Joliet Catholic Academy and defending state champion Nazareth being split up and meeting in the state title game did not happen as the Hilltoppers being sent north and meet in the

Of local interest, Marian Catholic is coached by former JCA football player and Joliet Central coach Mike Maloney.

The Hilltoppers are hoping to have injured running back Harry Davis back to full strength during the run.

It is the JCA defense that has stepped up this season allowing only 16.3 points per game.

Vernon Hills is scoring only 27.9, while allowing 14.3.

It is Vernon Hills’ first appearance in the playoffs since 2010 and they are led by quarterback Connor McNamara.
