And if they are not healthy, how can they be happy. this was the message he wanted to share with thousands of attendees to the 5th annual day of the immigrant, held Sunday at the bolingbrook town center. the Southwest Suburban immigrant Project sponsors the annual event. while a day of celebration, it was also a day to discuss the work that participants say still needs to be done in the area of immigration reform.

New lunch program a hit at Troy schools Students who buy hot lunches up 34% A new menu with more choices and food made fresh at each school is proving very popular with Troy District 30-C students.

Previously, lunches were made at an outside facility and delivered to the schools.

This year, with a new in-school vendor, students are enjoying the fresh, hot meals that include lasagna roll-ups with seasoned

green beans, broccoli buds and orange halves, chicken fajitas with Spanish rice, salsa and applesauce, and toasted cheese sandwiches with mixed vegetables.

There are also several a la carte items available daily, such as fresh fruit and veggies and crispy chicken salad at the grade schools and a fruit and veggie bar, grabn-go deli sandwiches and salads

at William B. Orenic Intermediate School and Troy Middle School.

The number of students who buy hot lunches at Troy schools is up by 34 percent this year, according to the district’s Executive Director of Finance and Operations Elaine Colombo.

Shorewood Police encourage parents to use booster seats All children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat How many times while driving, have you looked over at the car next to you and seen young children not buckled in a car seat or worse, not even belted in a seat belt? It happens far too often.

By Illinois law, a child must be in an appropriate car seat or booster seat until their eighth birthday; however, most children this age are still too small to sit in a seat without a booster seat.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration both advise that most children should ride in a booster seat until they have reached 4 feet, 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years old. Key factors your child is ready to use a seat belt include: if a child can sit all the way back against the vehicle seat; knees can bend completely over the edge of the vehicle seat; belt crosses the shoulder between the neck and arm; lap belt is touching the thighs and child can stay seated the entire trip.

Man guilty of aggravated assault against officer ‘This was an extraordinarily dangerous situation for these two police officers’ A Will County jury found a Lockport man guilty of aggravated assault against a Joliet police officer who was attempting to arrest him three years ago.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s office said Friday that James Pacheco, 38, was found guilty of aggravated assault for accelerating his vehicle toward the officer, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and drunk driving. He faces between two and six years in prison. Pacheco is scheduled to be sentenced in November.

Officers Adam Stapleton and Eric Zettergren were responding to reports of someone breaking the window of a Chevrolet pickup truck on July 30, 2012, near the 300 block of Union Street.

Cruz said his brother-in-law is battling many healthy issues and struggling to pay more than $60,000 in medical bills.

“I try to help my brother-in-law because he is family,” Cruz said.

“He has children that he has to provide for. How is he ever going to pay that? So, we try to help little by little.”

Cruz said he understands the naysayers in the world who point fingers at immigrants.

“They say we come into this country and take jobs away. That’s a joke. We work hard. We take the jobs no one else wants and get paid less,” said Cruz, who was helping out at the concession stands with his wife Sylvia before he gave his testimonial at a ceremony during the Day of Immigrant celebration.

“We do it because we want to support our families.”

At the heart of the SSIP’s mission is fighting for immigrant rights, urging legislators to make change.

Jose Vera, executive director for SSIP, said one important issue is bringing affordable healthcare to the suburbs, where free clinics are rare. Currently, there are only three

“I am here to show my support. I am here to celebrate all the work immigrants have done here and continue to do, and see that they are celebrated in the future.”

Pacheco was struck in the arm and face, but continued to flee in the Nissan until he struck a light pole near State and Division streets in Lockport.

Pacheco continued to struggle with police and resist arrest while he was inside the crashed Nissan, forcing Stapleton to use a stun gun to subdue him. The defendant’s blood-alcohol level was tested at .184 after the incident, according to the state’s attorney.

“This was an extraordinarily dangerous situation for these two police officers,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a release. “Officer Stapleton’s life was in danger when he opened fire on the vehicle in an attempt to stop this wildly erratic driver from running him over and going on to possibly harm others.”

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant agreed, calling it a day to support the SSIP’s initiatives and services.

The Day of the Immigrant, which began as a walk through Naperville, came to Bolingbrook in 2012 and now includes a variety of food vendors and an on-site resource fair.

“We had one food vendor, and about 300 people came out [the first year],” Vera said, adding that the organization expected 6,000 people at this year’s event. “The southwest suburbs are seeing a changing demographic. In Bolingbrook alone, the Latino population is growing, reaching nearly 50 percent Latino in our Bolingbrook/Romeoville school district.

“This is such an important celebration of immigrants, especially in a time with political candidates like Donald Trump speaking so badly,” Vera added.

“We need to show and celebrate what we have done.”

From Irish dancers to Mariachi bands, the 2015 Day of the Immigrant was a day of entertainment that promoted fellowship and camaraderie throughout the crowd. It was a day of “Harvesting the Future” and strengthening the voices of immigrants in Will and DuPage counties.

Debunking the 5 big myths about WordPress

After massive data breaches at Ashley Madison, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, cybersecurity has become a top priority for consumers, businesses and even federal agencies. So WordPress, a platform used by nearly a quarter of all the Internet’s websites, has installed advanced new privacy features.

Observers are eager to see if these enhancements make a difference and prevent future breaches.

But despite the update, some people are still skeptical of using WordPress, chiefly because of some baseless myths about the platform. Here are the five most prevalent – and why they’re wrong.

PRODUCTION

Myth No. 1: WordPress is just for blogs.

While primarily used as a blogging tool in its early days, WordPress is now a fullfeatured “content management system.”

That means users can customize their site’s appearance with thousands of themes and specialty functions via downloadable “plugins.”

WordPress can serve as the backbone for powerful, dynamic websites far more advanced than a cookie-cutter blog.

With over 60 million websites, this system is certainly targeted by hackers.

The vast majority get blocked. WordPress comes with robust security plugins, which are particularly useful for sites hosting ecommerce or other sensitive client information. And those plugins,

along with other security measures, are only getting stronger.

The update, for example, includes enhanced password security features.

Password reset links will now only stay live for a limited time and passwords themselves will never end up in inboxes – a feeding ground for hackers. WordPress will even advise individual users on the safest possible password.

And even those scant few successful breaches don’t mean WordPress is any less secure than rival platforms. The websites of CitiGroup, Google and Zappos don’t run on WordPress and have also been hacked or attacked. Regular, common sense precautions – like avoiding “password” as your password – will protect average users from any shenanigans.

Myth No. 3: WordPress isn’t suitable for big businesses.

Many large companies with hightraffic sites use WordPress, including Forbes, CNN, TIME magazine, The New York Post, and General Electric. Most of the speed and security issues that might affect a well-trodden site can be solved by hosting the site on a private server.

Even the experts trust WordPress.

TechCrunch, a major technology news site with millions of visitors each month, runs on the platform. And The Seattle Times now entrusts its entire online presence to WordPress.

Myth No. 4: Open-source software doesn’t provide good user support.

The opposite is true.

Open-source software allows millions of developers from all around the world to add and refine the WordPress programming. That means if a user runs into an issue, chances are someone else has bumped into it too – and already found the solution. WordPress forums are a massive base of community knowledge and offer fixes to almost every potential problem.

Compare that to a closed-source platform. Even the most dedicated support team probably includes at most a dozen or so people. They’re responsible for solving a wide and sprawling mass of glitches. Even common user issues often go unaddressed.

Myth No. 5: The plugins can’t be trusted.

It’s safe to assume that some of WordPress’s 30,000 plugins haven’t been coded to the highest standards.

But that’s why the platform has a robust review system that allows users to flag any problems.

With millions of sites giving feedback, glitches are ferreted out quickly. And just as you wouldn’t buy a blender on Amazon with one-star reviews, users would do well to avoid installing a plugin with less-than-stellar ratings.

Whether you want to run a basic blog or an online empire, WordPress is a solid platform option. And its recent security upgrade is bound to make it even more so.

WordPress uses software that can be edited by any web developer. Some critics claim that such “open sourcing” leaves gaps in user support.

Joliet Central awarded Relay for Life trophy Award recognizes school’s fundraising, participation

Joliet Central High School students and staff were recognized for their generosity and fundraising during its homecoming assembly Sept. 11.

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy and Central Principal Shad Hallihan presented the traveling JTHS Relay for Life trophy to Central Campus for their accomplishment of raising the most money for Relay for Life Joliet. Relay for Life is a 12-hour community fundraising event and walk that raises money to finish the fight against cancer.

Central’s donation of $4,313 was a collaborative effort of students and staff who participated in online fundraising and participation in the event. Joliet Central’s Presidents’ Club, Aktion Club, Class Committees, Key Club, Human Relations Club, Student

Council, Card Club, and Anime Club participated along with the Joliet West Students of Community Advocacy and Students of Service.

Central Campus raised $4,313 and West Campus raised $3,825, which brought the district total to $8,138 in donations.

The traveling trophy represents a friendly competition between Joliet West and Joliet Central. “Although the trophy was meant to be used as motivation for our students to participate and raise money for the Relay for Life event, many of our students and staff participated because they truly wanted to show their support to cancer survivors and raise money to the American Cancer Society,” said Lisa Luangsomkham, a teacher at Joliet Central.

Joliet West students named 2016 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists Joliet West High School seniors Miguel Gutierrez and Clayton Pelzer have been selected as semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

To qualify as semifinalists Gutierrez and Pelzer displayed outstanding academic records, received endorsements and recommendations from Joliet West officials, wrote essays, and earned SAT scores that confirmed their earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Approximately 1.5 million juniors entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test,

which served as the initial screening for program entrants.

Gutierrez and Pelzer have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million offered in spring of 2016.

To become a finalists, Gutierrez and Pelzer must submit a detailed scholarship application providing information on their academic record, participation in school and communityactivities,demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

Hamlin wins in Joliet after talk with Chicago legend

It is not very often that Michael Jordan admits someone is better than him at anything.

Well, he is going to have to now.

That is because Denny Hamlin, a friend of the former Bulls’ superstar, claimed victory in Jordan’s backyard, using a late restart to jump the field and win the MyAFibRisk.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.

“The first thing I’m going to do is text Michael Jordan,” Hamlin said after the win. “He texted me on Wednesday and said he was in Monte-Carlo. I popped in his head like I always do, which I thought was a little odd. He said, I know you’re about to head into the playoffs. I just want you to know I’ve never admitted to anybody that anyone is better than me at anything my whole life. But if you win this race this weekend, I will admit that you’re a better driver than I am.

I thought, Wow! That would be awesome. So the first thing I’m going to do is text him and say,

With his win, Hamlin automatically punched his ticket into the second round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. “I’ve been telling people, look at our finishes going into the Chase,” Hamlin said. “We’ve been strong. Everyone else gets the headlines, but we have been chipping away at some really good finishes here lately, doing a lot of great things. Our Toyotas have been really fast. Joe Gibbs Racing has given us some really good cars here lately. This is no exception. Obviously we just were very fortunate with the late-race restart and we were able to capitalize on it.”

Hamlin went a lap down early after spinning out spin on Lap 2. He didn’t get back on the lead lap until he took advantage of a wave-around before a restart on Lap 129.

“My car actually wasn’t quite as good after we spun as it was before,” he said. “I mean, my car was really fast. I just knew with a shot we had a chance. We

Day sizzles at Conway Farms Aussie wins BMW Championship, takes over world No. 1 ranking

LAKE FOREST - It was quite the weekend for Jason Day. After jumping out to a big lead after the first round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms, Day cruised to the title, winning for the fourth time in six starts and retaining No. 1 in the Fed Ex Cup. Even more, he made it to No. 1 in the world for the first time in his career.

“Four of the last six has been a dream run for me,” Day said. “It is quite shocking to understand what I have accomplished for me personally. I always thought I had it in me, but for me to finish the way I have has been a fantastic ride. This weekend has been a whirlwind. I wanted to reach No. 1 for a long time now, so it has been hard to downplay it. It has been a great run and it is even better to make it to world No. 1.”

Day opened with a 10-underpar 61 on Thursday and maintained the lead throughout the tournament, finishing with a 22-under-par 262 as he and the field tore apart Conway Farms.

Daniel Berger finished second at -16, Piercy was third at -15 and JB Holmes, Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy tied for fourth at -14.

WORLD No. 1 The win moved Day past McIlroy and Spieth into the world’s top ranking. It was a dream of Day’s for many of years.

“Ever since I was a 13-yearold kid, I started playing more competitive golf and watching Tiger win in 1997,” Day said.

“Once I turned professional, I wanted to get to No. 1 in the world. That was probably when I was around 18. It has taken some time, but it is worked out and I’m sitting on top of the world now.”

Bringing it up as a goal to the public led to backlash over the years. Some said he would never get there, while others called it arrogant for him to state he wanted to get there. In the end,

West loses game, Tibble Joliet West suffered its secondstraight loss to open the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division, falling to Bolingbrook 426.

The bigger loss may be the loss of senior quarterback Alex Tibble, who left early in the third quarter after a hit to the head.

Jakob Coyl paced the West offense as he ran 15 times for 82.

• Michael Johnson paced JCA to a 48-0 win over St. Viator Friday night.

Johnson, who took a heavier load with the absence of Harry Douglas, who was lost has week with a broken ankle. Johnson carried the ball 11

times for 213 with touchdown runs of 5 and 82 yards. He also caught touchdown 44 yards and 66 yards from Cade Earl. All Johnson’s stats came before halftime.

We both work long hours, but we don’t make a lot of money. I made about $20,000 last year, and he

currently makes $35,000 working 60 to 70 hours a week. Do you have any advice for us now and after the baby arrives?

Lindsay Dear Lindsay, Congratulations! You’re going to be a mom, and you’re running your own business. I think more than anything you just need some good business planning and time management. The good news is that you have a little time on your hands before the baby gets here. You can begin scheduling things now and laying out a plan. If you get into a busy time — say around wedding season — you may want to bring in a baby sitter or some part-time help for your business. I don’t think I would do daycare every day. You’re probably not that busy 12 months out of the year or even at the height of some seasons yet.

Your husband also needs some

relief in the future. Working those kinds of hours, and bringing home just $35,000 a year, is no way to help support a family the way he would like, I’m sure. If his hours are going to back down soon and his income is going to go up, that’s one thing.

If not, he needs to look into getting some additional education, making modifications to his current career or finding another line of work.

With some careful and realistic planning on your end, and him doing something to make things better on his, a lot of the stress will fall off.

Hundreds of local breast cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, businesses and community members unite to fight breast cancer at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk. This noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to fight breast cancer and provides hope to all people facing the disease.
