Bolingbrook celebrates 50th anniversary this year's top community news stories

From celebrating a town’s history to welcoming new development in Bolingbrook and Romeoville, 2015 was a year for acknowledging great endeavors.

Here is a look at 10 stories that shaped 2015.

Athletic and Events Center to be named after local hospital Edward Hospital receives naming rights for Romeoville center Romeoville continued to benefit from its progress on the Uptown Center, earning $500,000 for extending the naming rights of the Romeoville Athletic and Events Center to Edward Hospital.

The village entered into a naming rights and space lease

agreement with Edward Hospital for the Athletic and Events Center, the new 76,000-squarefoot facility located at 55 Phelps Ave. Edward Hospital will pay $100,000 a year for the next five years for the naming rights which include space for its logo and name in signage for the main exterior sign, interior signage, sponsorship for the indoor court and leasing space for physical therapy on the upper floor, said Village Attorney Rich Vogel.

municipality of Bolingbrook officially voted on in 1965 It was in 1965 that a few hundred voters went to the polls to officially create the municipality of Bolingbrook, and the anniversary was a reason to celebrate the town’s short but rich history for Bolingbrook natives.

From taking selfies with flamingos to resurrecting the cardboard regatta, the town celebrated its 50th anniversary

over the summer months. A host of events showcased the progress and diversity of a town that had built itself up from the first model homes off of the old Route 66 to taking national recognition ranking among the top 50 best places to live for four consecutive years.

The town presided over dedications and tours of the town’s original police department and village hall, honored its pioneers, hosted the village’s largest birthday bash and celebrated in style.

Police departments begin carrying antidote for heroin overdose The Bolingbrook Police Department began carrying equipment that could save a victim of heroin overdose.

The Will County office including Executive Officer Larry Walsh Sr., had been taking an aggressive approach to combat the heroin epidemic in the area through various programs and initiatives. In July, using a federal grant to implement a Narcan program through the Will County Health Department, an effort for potentially all police departments

to carry an antidote became available.

The Bolingbrook Police Department was the first in Will County to start using the nasal spray form of naloxone, commonly known under the brand name Narcan. Naloxone is an antidote to opioid drugs. Opioids can slow or stop a person’s breathing, which causes death. In simplest terms, naloxone helps the person wake up and keeps them breathing.

Naloxone has been in use for years by emergency medical

professionals given by injection.

The nasal spray is easier to use and is more fail proof.

Clow Airport closes for overhaul of runway village working with idot to facilitate the reconstruction Years in the making, a plan to improve the village-owned Bolingbrook International Clow Airport came to fruition with construction beginning on a $6.8 million federally-funded overhaul.

Clow Airport officially closed for business as construction crews rolled in to revamp the runway,

widening it to 75 feet and adding new automated lighting controls installed.

Bolingbrook is working with the Illinois Department of Transportation to facilitate the reconstruction of the runway and the Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for the bulk of the cost, 90 percent, of the $6.8 million project.

The plan to overhaul the airport dated back to 2000 when a way to make improvements were sought, realizing federal funds were

needed.

The airport was operating on a waiver for its use of a 50-foot runway, technically too narrow by federal standards.

The key was to widen the runway to federal standards in order to get federal funding. By 2009, an environmental impact study was completed as a means to apply for federal funding.

The study by Hanson Engineering further outlined that due to the activity of the airport, events and the increased number of people

utilizing services in the village, the total economic impact of the airport nears $14 million.

In 2011, the Division of Aeronautics signed off on the feasibility of an improvement project.

The plan originally called for nearly $10 million in repair.

The economy took its toll on available funds and the project had to be scaled back.

The improvement plan now takes care of all safety issues with the widening of the runway, a massive

project involving the regrading of the runway and taxi area. In addition, runway lights will not have to remain on all night.

A pilot-controlled system will now operate the lights.

When a pilot is flying into the airport, he or she can control the lights by frequency.

With the long-term vision of the village to keep the airport as an economic tool rather than opening the land to more retail, the federal funding now tied to the airport will keep it a viable, protected asset.

New director to lead fire and police JJC on track for expansion Tom Ross leads departments as Director of Public Safety A member of the Bolingbrook Police Department for 27 years, Tom Ross took over both the police and fire departments as the Director of Public Safety.

Deputy Director since 2008, he was tapped to take the next step at the announcement of the retirement of former Deputy Director Kevin McCarthy, who retired after 32 years on the force.

Starting out in patrol, Ross worked his way through the ranks

taking on various roles in the department.

“Our police are the finest and our fire department is second to none,” he said.

He explains that at the heart, the department’s job is resolving social and civic issues that can done before a problem begins.

“A great part of our job is getting people in touch with the right government resource,” said Ross. “If someone had a problem, they likely come to us first and it is our job to help them.”

Ross said his door is always open as are the phone lines and that is what sets this village apart—the open communication—that rests not only in the police and fire department but throughout the village.

As a management style, he has been on board with the role of team leader, but emphasizes the team, and rather “leads from the middle.”

Crews broke ground Sept. 8 on a new 50,000-square-foot expansion for Joliet Junior College’s Romeoville campus, long considered a priority by administration in hopes to match the explosive growth of the area with academic offerings.

Since its inception, the Romeoville campus has seen an explosion in enrollment, some 45 percent over the past 10 years.

It was one of two priority projects outlined in the updated 2013 JJC Master Plan, including the construction of a multipurpose facility on its main campus in Joliet.

The Romeoville campus, first built in 1993, is located just off Weber Road and 135th Street. The expansion will include a new twostory, nearly 50,000-square-footfacility and will serve as the new entrance to the campus directly facing 135th Street.

The lower level will be dedicated to student support services including career counseling, guidance, a bookstore and cafeteria.

The second level will house science laboratories and classroom space.

The new Romeoville expansion is being designed to make it a selfsufficient campus similar to its main campus in Joliet.

Valley View survives PARCC; changes in store for next year Initial findings, after months of preparation and some trepidation regarding the new state assessment for school districts, had Valley View School District claiming victory.

Though the assessment does not carry any weight this year as there is no comparable data yet,

school officials said the process was relatively a success.

After pouring nearly $1 million into its roll out and expanding its technology, the district said its preparation paid off, with little to no hiccups in the process.

The new test, named Partnership

for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, was designed to replace the ISAT and PSAE in the 2014-2015 school year and was given this past April and again in May. The PARCC test measures deeper learning, critical thinking and

problem-solving skills and allows for teachers and administrators to give more feedback on student progress through online assessments, a monumental shift from pen and paper tests.

School districts throughout the state had been grappling with how

The project – one of the Chicago area’s largest build-to-suit projects in 2014 - was nominated for the Chicago Industrial Project of the Year by National Association of Office and Industrial Properties.

“This is the first full-line furniture store we’ve ever had in the

community,” Mayor John Noak said.

“This concept is unique even in the industry to have such a combination of showroom, distribution and office. The interstate gives them great visibility and we are excited about this as really a regional destination. Customers will know they have everything right here.”

A big positive for the village’s industrial sector, the retail side also brings in additional sales tax dollars for the village.

“Why?” I asked.

“It really isn’t anyone’s priority except maybe the patient’s,” Jha said. “How many times have you heard stories about hospital CEOs getting fired because of the hospital’s infection rates? I haven’t.”

He added there’s also no evidence that high infection rates or high mortality rates have any effect on CEO salaries.

So what does affect hospital CEO salaries? Is it all those advertising dollars that bring in gobs of new patients and brand recognition? I have no evidence one way or other, but I do know I’ve interviewed enough families whose relatives suffered harm in a hospital to know that someone should be paying closer attention to preventing preventable infections.

The government’s list opens a window into the world of hospital safety. If the public looks through that window, takes notice of the penalties and asks what their local hospitals are doing to correct their deficiencies, that’s a start at cleaning up the problem. Voyager Media looks back on the year’s memorable moments

The year was filled with several top stories, some happy, some sad, all memorable.

He are the Bolingbrook and Romeoville Bugle’s top stories of 2015.

PASSING oF A LeGeND Fifty-nine-year coaching icon Gordie Gillespie died Feb. 28 at his Joliet residence at the age of 88.

Gillespie, who spent 25 years with the University of St. Francis, was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas in July, 2009.

Gillespie posted an overall baseball record of 1,893-952-2.

With St. Francis, Gillespie was 1,020-581-2 in his years on the bench. He spent 10 years at Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he was 239-130. His college coaching career began at Lewis University, where he was 634-241 in 24 years.

Gillespie was not only a baseball coach, nor has he stayed at the college level.

He had a 222-54-6 record in 27 years as coach of Joliet Catholic High School, where he won Class 4A titles in 1975-’78 and the Class 5A title in 1981.

Gillespie also coached USF football for eight years, netting a 48-33-0 record.

He coached Lewis’ mens basketball team for 15 years, putting up a 228-124 record.

He also coached women’s basketball at USF for one year, posting an 11-7 mark.

Overall, Gillespie has a coached a total of 3,453 games, with a 2,4021,170-8 record, a win percentage of .672.

He won four championships in college, three at Lewis and one with the Saints.

The death of Gillespie brought many stories of his style and dedication to the many sports he

No matter who you talk to or what sport they played one general theme existed – Gillespie cared more for the athlete than the victory.

That philosophy, however, turned into more than 2,000 wins in his illustrious career.

You never had to try and get yourself ready to play, you just had to listen to him for five minutes before the game. He brought out the best in you.”

BOUDOURIS RETIRES After spending a better part of his life at Romeoville High School, Jim Boudouris retired as Spartans’ Athletic Director in July.

In 1971, as a freshman at then Lockport West High School, Boudouris first became a Spartan.

A year later, the school was redistricted and its name changed to Romeoville High School and Boudouris first became a member of the school that more than four decades later, his name would be synonymous with.

He would return to the school in 1979 and would remain there for the next 36 years in different roles, most recently as athletic director for the past 12 years.

RAIDERS PLACE THIRD The cheers from fans who stood outside Bolingbrook High School began when they first got a glimpse of the boys basketball team bus—led by a police and fire department escort—turn onto Raider Way off of Lily Cache Lane.

And the cheering continued inside the gymnasium as those fans were joined by village and school officials for a pep rally to honor the 2014-15 Raiders, who played in Peoria and brought

home a third-place state trophy— the first for a boys basketball team in school history—after defeating Geneva, 63-42.

Defeating Geneva enabled the Raiders to exact revenge on the Vikings, who last March ended Bolingbrook’s season in a regional championship game.

The Raiders were denied a trip to the state championship contest after eventual Class 4A champ, Stevenson, handed them a 63-43 loss in the semifinals.

For his efforts, Bolingbrook senior Prentiss Nixon was named as the Voyager Media boys basketball Player of the Year.

SOCCER SUCCESS The Bolingbrook soccer team won its first regional championship in 23 years before falling to top-seeded Naperville North 1-0 in overtime at the Metea Valley Sectional semifinal.

While the season was a success for the team, it was also a success for senior Luis Flores, who was an All-State selection for the second season in a row by the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches’ Association.

“He is going to be a tough guy to replace,” coach Jamie Clemmons said of Flores. “He had 18 goals

this year and was half of our production. He will go on to the next level and will be a big loss.”

Romeoville also had a two-time all state selection in Christian Duarte is again an all-state selection. It is the second straight year he has received this honor.

“Duarte is officially Romeoville’s best boys soccer player ever,” said coach Nick Cirrincione said. “He is the first two-time All-State player ever from the school.”

NEW HIRE After the resignation of Jeff Kuna as head football coach, Romeoville went to a familiar face to roam the sideline, naming former player Oliver Gibson as its new head coach.

Gibson was an All-American player for the Spartans and the 1989 USA Today High School Football Defensive Player of the Year.

Gibson played collegiately at the University of Notre Dame and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He played from 1995–2003 for the Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals.

TRACK TITLE The Bolingbrook 4x100-meter relay team went into the state meet at Eastern Illinois University with one goal – winning the state championship.

Thanks to a lean across the finish line by senior Jessica Watkins, they did just that, edging LincolnWay East by one hundredth of a second, finishing with a time of 47.58.

The veteran unit overcame adversity over the years to win the title, making everything pay off in the end.

Watkins closed her career in style, finishing with a fourth-place finish in the 100 (12.11) and a seventh-place showing in the 200 (25.52).

Charlyncia Stennis placed seventh in the 400, finishing with a time of 57.79.

Senior Mikayla Houston had a shot put distance of 37-feet, 9.5-inches, which was short of qualifying for finals.

Romeoville’s Cierra Pulliam finished second place Saturday at Eastern Illinois University with a distance of 39-feet, 7.75-inches.

LEWIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL No. 4 Lewis women’s basketball saw the best season in school history come to an end on March 24 in the Elite Eight at the Sanford Pentagon at the hands of No. 2 Limestone 61-58.

Lewis closed the 2014-15 campaign 31-3, setting school records for most wins and fewest losses in the process. This was Lewis’ first Elite Eight berth in program history.

Because of the team’s success, Lewis University women’s basketball head coach Lisa Carlsen was named the 2015 United States Marine Corps/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year as well as the WBCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year and the Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

Two months later, Carlen was named as the new women’s coach at Northern Illinois University.

Then, in July, the Flyers announced Kristen Gillespie, grandaughter of Lewis coaching legend Gordie Gillespie, as the new women’s backetball coach.

She comes to Lewis on the heels

of a four-year run at Division III Benedictine in Lisle, where she was the head coach.

TITLE RUN FALLS SHORT After defeating them earlier in the season, top-seeded Lewis men’s volleyball fell 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 2515, 25-27, 23-21) to No.3 Loyola on May 9 in the 2015 NCAA National Championship.

The contest featured a dramatic fifth set where both teams earned several match points.

The match was the third contest in NCAA Championship history to go to extra points in the fifth game.

The 16-point overtime is the longest fifth-set in NCAA Tournament history.

Lewis ended the 2015 campaign 27-4. Loyola improved to 28-3 with the win. The match was played at Maples Pavilion on the campus of host Stanford University.

TOP VAULTER The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on May 15 that Lewis University senior and Romeoville High School graduate Rebecca Preisler has been named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Midwest Region Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

“I am so happy for Rebecca to receive this honor,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “She truly is one of the best athletes in the country and this will mean a lot to her, her family and our program.”

Preisler, the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Pole Vault Champion, posted the nation’s top outdoor pole vault at 4.20m (13’9 1/4”), setting

a Great Lakes Valley Conference meet and Lewis record. She placed second in the nation during the outdoor season.

MASSENGALE DRAFTED On May 16, Bolingbrook’s Ariel Massengale was drafted as the 29th overall choice in the WNBA draft by the Atlanta Dream.

The WNBA draft consists of only three rounds of 12 players taken in each round, meaning only 36 players are selected each year.

Massengale was the first local player drafted in the WNBA since JCA’s Allie Quigley was selected 22nd overall in 2008.

In that season, Naperville Central’s Candace Parker was the No. 1 overall selection in the draft, much like this season, where Niles West graduate Jewell Loyd was the top pick, as she decided to forego her senior season at Notre Dame to enter the professional ranks.

While at Tennessee, Massengale is only the third Lady Vol with more than 1,000 points and 500 assists in career. She is No. 4 on the all-time assist leader in Tennessee history with 518.

At Bolingbrook, Massengale helped the Raiders claim threestraight state titles. Her senior season, she was McDonald’s High School All-American, WBCA High School All-American and Gatorade Illinois Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

COOKE WINS It was an emotional year for former Raider David Cooke.

In December his younger brother, Chad, died while playing a pick-up basketball game. Over

the summer, Cooke put on a show at the 66th Illinois Open – setting records along the way.

The 2011 Bolingbrook High School graduate carded a record score of 199, 16-under-par, at Royal Melbourne Country Club, in Long Grove, beating Web.com pro Vince India (11-under 204).

His 128 total over the final 36 holes was also a tourney mark in the Illinois PGA event.

Cooke’s five-shot win matched

the largest margin of victory by an amateur in tournament history equaling Gary Hallberg’s winning margin in 1977.

The 22-year-old Cooke opened his final round with an eagle. After a good drive, he nailed a 144-yard pitching wedge to six feet and dropped the putt for an eagle. That broke his three-round tie with Brad Marek, who birdied.

Keep holidays with difficult family simple and on the surface Dear Dave, I haven’t spoken to my mom and sister in more than six months.

Over time, I realized we have a real Dave Says clash of moral money advice by dave ramsey values that has led to arguments and hard feelings. Lately, with it being Christmas season and a new year just around the corner, I’ve found myself wanting to navigate things a little better and stop avoiding them. It’s been mostly just between myself and them, so my wife and kids are pretty insulated from the ugliness. Do you have any advice for handling situations such as these?

Dave Dear Dave, Well, the good news is it doesn’t sound like you’ve had to spend a lot of time with them. So their influence over you and your household has been minimal. Still, things like this are painful. These are people you love, even if they are hard to get along with or understand.

I’m not a family counselor, but my initial advice would be don’t try to change them. And don’t take

discussions too deep. If you get together, just keep things simple and on the surface. To the extent they try to invade your family, that’s where you have to put up a good solid boundary. You have to protect your family and try your best to keep bad influences at a distance.

But I don’t think you’re going to fix them. Probably the best thing you can do is model sanity and reason in front of them.

A friend of mine who has some crazy in-laws says he adopts the bobblehead deal. He just sits there like a bobblehead and smiles and nods, no matter what craziness is swirling around. And that’s not a bad idea when you think about it.

You don’t want things getting ugly

if you can help it, plus the chances of you changing a lifetime of toxic behaviors in one brief interaction are very small.

Pray for them, too, Dave. Then, if they ask for help, maybe you could insert some gentle wisdom.

Don’t tell them what they’re doing is wrong or that they’re bad people.

Just describe things you and your family have done and how you’ve handled similar situations. But until they bring it up, I wouldn’t go there.
