Harvest Saturday shines through Hundreds volunteer for annual food drive, despite winter weather

Though Harvest Saturday experienced some of the worst weather conditions in its 22-year history, the generosity of volunteers and community members was more than enough to melt away the sleet and snow. Crowds of people braved the inclement weather Nov. 21 and went door-to-door collecting food for the area’s largest food drive, the 22nd annual Northern Will County Harvest Saturday. Year after year, hundreds of volunteers band together on a mission to stock five food pantries in the area the Saturday before Thanksgiving and to prep for the long winter ahead.

But winter came early with a

snowstorm that had the collection event end early to protect drivers and runners from the elements. For those who still have food to donate, please deliver to St. Andrew Church at 530 Glen Ave., Romeoville.

Although the snow and ice caused donations to be down some, volunteers were able to sort nearly 700 boxes of food to be donated

to area pantries. In past years, that number was closer to 1,000.

“It was the most generous and humbling experience after days of mishaps,” organizer Deb Eischen said. “We were down in donations and volunteers, which we expected because of the weather, but we were so surprised by how so little people could do so much... It is because

they have such big hearts.”

Eighth grade Indian Trail students Evelyn Carranza and Fanya Perez came back soaked after volunteering but said they were happy to have helped.

“It was pretty nasty but it was very cool,” Carranza said. “We still just wanted to come out and get the food that we know would help people.”

Sorting out the canned goods in the “veggie” room, Dawn Mosteller of Plainfield said she has been coming back each year to help out, now making it a family tradition and bringing her grandson along.

“People are in need and you come here and see and feel the warmth of helping—I want to help spread that feeling. I am overwhelmed by it and I always will be. There was a time when I was in need, it’s my turn to give back,” she said.

Bolingbrook residents Ana Torres and Liz Massa agree, and added that coming to help at Harvest Saturday is just something “you have to experience.”

Organizer Deb Eischen couldn’t be more thankful to the supporters, because so many came out despite the weather, for the sake of serving others.

“It’s been a tough day. We couldn’t do this without all of you,” she told the crowd. “I am just so touched by this showing of support and in constant amazement of the generosity of this community.”

The event is sponsored by St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Community Christian Church, United Presbyterian Church and The Rock Church.

After the flood of April 2013 hit at least 20 area communities hard, causing major damage to both residential and public areas, an investigation was deemed necessary.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a series of public meetings last week in Bolingbrook, Wheaton and Shorewood to share a first look of the DuPage River Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study and solicit concerns and information from residents.

In July 2015, the USACE, Chicago District, signed a Feasibility Cost Share Agreement with the DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee and Will County Executive Office to initiate the study, which will investigate overbank and backwater flooding along the DuPage River and its major tributaries.

The study is still in its infancy, and the USACE, in coordination with local agencies, is hosting numerous meetings to further its research, identify and prioritize high-risk areas, and develop possible structural and nonstructural alternatives to address flooding.

Though the April 2013 flood was the most recent and deemed devastating to the area, it wasn’t the first. Other major storm events that caused the river’s basin to flood occurred in 1996, 2008 and 2009.

The DuPage River and tributaries drain approximately 353 square miles in suburban Cook, DuPage, and Will counties. The area has seen rapid growth over the past two decades, and now includes 40 communities and approximately 900,000 residents.

With the DuPage River flowing through the majority of the northwest part of Will County, including Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield and Crest Hill, nearly 55 percent of the population in

that area are prone to potential flooding.

During the Nov. 16 meeting at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, many area residents came to attest to just that, saying that they have seen a substantial increase in flooding over the years. Many long-time residents, some living in their homes for more than 40 years, recall when then there was no flooding to times now when backyards and roadways resemble a pond.

Many blamed growth without proper retention, calling for something to be done to block off the overbank flooding that is now all too common.

“When I moved in, the area wasn’t event considered a flood plain,” Plainfield resident Gary Magauder said. “Now, it rains two inches and the river floods. We are obsessed with building roads and bridges… Well, we created a man-made monster. Some serious action is needed.”

Bolingbrook resident Judy Bredeweg shared a similar story.

Royce and Boughton roads to now experiencing three feet of water in her backyard during a recent flood.

As a former Will County board member, she recalled open space planning, the creation of berms to stop flooding and the idea that Whalon Lake would take in the overflow.

“Nothing is happening, yet something needs to be done,” said Bredeweg. “I hope something can be done. I am too old to run for office again.”

Carl Bryant of Plainfield said the misplacement of berms can sometimes cause further flooding in other areas. He spoke of the berm built by the Lakelands subdivision, which was recently deemed illegal to have been constructed, calling for further investigation.

Bolingbrook resident Sean Salisbury added that the newly constructed 95th Street Bridge should just be called a dam. He said he has already seen an increase of flooding since its construction.

Fountaindale Public Library passes tax levy District is limited to a tax cap, either 5 % or what the Consumer Price Index dictates

The Fountaindale Public Library recently passed its tax levy for the 2015-16 fiscal year, amounting to an increase of less than 1 percent for property owners.

Each year, governing districts, such as the library, must pass a tax levy at an inflated rate as not to lose potential income from new properties that may come in within the year, thus the district proposed an 8.8 percent increase in the tax levy.

However, the district is limited to a tax cap, either 5 percent or whatever the Consumer Price Index dictates; whichever is lower.

According to Executive Director of the Fountaindale Public Library Paul Mills, the district is restricted to a .8 increase under PTELL (the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law) and would equate to approximately $62,000 in additional revenue.

“Any new construction or newly improved property would be in addition to that, but any increase related to that is uncertain. This

is separate from our bond levy (i.e. the voter approved levy that provided the funds to build our new library),” said Mills.

Mills said the library is working within its budget for this year, but the state budget crisis could make its way into shortfalls for Fountaindale.

The library district receives two key levels of funding from the state, including per capital grant money based on population.

The district should have received $85,000 in grant money for the year, but to date it has not.

Mills said the district uses that grant money mainly to purchase e-books, making the shortfall a direct impact to the district’s collection.

The second level of funding comes indirectly through the use of the Illinois library’s delivery service, RAILS, (Reaching Across Illinois Library Systems) in which books are delivered from library to library throughout the state.

“If we lose that funding there is no way to replicate it,” said Mills.

RAILS has not received funding for the past five months and is now operating on reserve funds.

However, Mills, who sits on the RAILS board of directors, said the group has been financially wise and has enough funding through next fiscal year.

Yet he still worries that as the state continues to look for funding to pay other agencies, RAILS funding could be in jeopardy.

Mills is also quick to note though that Fountaindale currently has a lot to offer including a number of new programs such as its Star Wars Celebration, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5. Before The Force Awakens, the library is getting into the Star Wars™ spirit.

Throughout the day, there will be green screen photos, crafts, games, costume and trivia contests, and more.

The library also recently introduced its Playaway Launchpad, a kids-only learning tablet that is pre-loaded with high-quality, ad-free learning apps and games. The Launchpads are 100 percent secure, ensuring that users will not be exposed to unintended content. In addition, the informational console will allow parents to monitor how time is spent on the tablet.

Legos help students learn about technology Students ‘Bear Down’ on Bullies STEM Club project features visits by Lewis University students

The smiles on their faces tell it all. Once a week for the past five weeks, as many as three dozen Martinez Middle School students have willingly stayed after school to work with Legos.

“They’re not so much learning how to build Legos, they’re learning how to program Lego robots,” said Kim Perry, faculty advisor for the Martinez STEM Club. “They followed directions on how to put it together and now they’re learning how to tell it to turn left or turn right or to use arms to pick things up.

Right now they all look like bricks on wheels. But by the end, we’ll have different-looking robots.”

Made possible through the efforts of the Three Rivers Educational Partnership (TREP), the STEM Club project features visits by Lewis University students Alejandro Rodriguez and Kaelyn Williams who assist and encourage the Martinez students.

“I want all of them to be computer program nerds,” said Rodriguez, a Lewis graduate student majoring in information security. “It’s cool to see some girls in this program because the technology arena is so male-dominated.”

“We work together,” added Williams, a senior majoring in special education and elementary education who will student teach in Joliet next semester. “I have no experience with these robots but I

work with kids all day, every day.”

“It’s been awesome. We’ve had kids who struggle in regular classrooms that are thriving with science in here,” Perry said. “It’s all about mechanics and engineering.

It kind of opens their eyes to possibilities.”

The robotics kits will remain at Martinez for the club’s use through Dec. 2. After that, they head to another Will County school.

“People are having fun doing this,” said eighth grader Andrew Koroma, who firmly believes he now can program a robot on his own. “I learned how to build a robot.”

“Every time I leave here, I’m smiling. I love it,” Rodriguez said.

Chicago Bears mascot Staley Da Bear and his “Bear Down on Bullies” team dropped by Jonas Salk Elementary School Tuesday morning to help educate students on the dangers of bullying and the importance of respect.

“It’s important to get bullying out of our schools and out of our communities,” Bear Down on Bullies master of ceremonies Lauren Hart said.

Hart detailed the various types of bullying and the effects bullies have on their victims.

“It’s very frustrating and uncomfortable. You can feel really bad,” she said. “You’re not happy.

You don’t feel wanted. It’s hard to concentrate on the things you’re

supposed to be concentrating on in school.”

What can students do about bullying?

He has long argued policies are too expensive and deductibles too high for all except those who get the highest subsidies—in other words, those with the lowest incomes.

Laszewski predicts even higher increases for next year along with higher deductibles and a smaller choice of doctors and hospitals. That’s what the Illinois woman is afraid of.

“I didn’t expect these kinds of increases year after year,” she told me. “It was like the first year was a big come-on.

Everybody gets in and the second year they sock it to you.”

And for next year?

“Who knows,” she says. “Still counting down to Medicare.”

TUF TAKES TWO Senior linebacker is 2-time Defensive Player of the Year

This season, Bolingbrook senior Tuf Borland posted 165 total tackles, 103 of them solo, including 11 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

However, the linebacker would have traded in all of his personal stats to add to the win column of the 5-5 record for the Raiders this season.

“Honestly, the only thing I worry about are wins and losses,” Borland said. “It is my competitiveness, I think. I know the only thing that is important are wins and losses and that is what I tried to help the team do.”

Borland was a starter as a freshman for the Raiders and in his career, he has posted a record of 31-13, advancing to the playoffs every season and winning four post season games.

Borland’s individual stats and hunger to help his team win has made him the Voyager Media

Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season.

He is the only winner of this award, after Voyager Media created different winners on each side of the ball.

Even with the accolades, Borland wanted more wins.

“The season didn’t pan out the way we wanted it to. We just couldn’t find it,” Borland said. “We put some things together at the end of the year. We had some chances in the playoff game with Naperville Central. We just couldn’t pull it off.”

Next season, Borland is headed to one of the epicenters of winning in college football, as he attends Ohio State University.

The Buckeyes are 38-3 in three seasons under coach Urban Meyer, including a national championship last year.

“They are a great program and have a great tradition and are known for winning. I am extremely luck and blessed to be able to go to school and play there,” Borland said.

At the beginning of the season, the Joliet Catholic Academy offense seemed to be set for the long haul with several talented athletes in the backfield.

When Harry Davis was injured, however, senior running back Michael Johnson was tabbed to carry the load of the offense.

He did so to the tune of 1,986 yards on 260 carries, an average of 7.6 yards per rush. Johnson tallied 26 touchdowns on the ground, adding five more scores through the air, adding more than receiving yards.

For his success, Johnson is the Voyager Media 2015 Football Offensive Player of the Year.

“He is one of the best backs in the area. He can run the ball out of the wing position or the tail position,” said JCA coach Dan Sharp. “He is a great downhill runner, a great edge runner and has great hands and is

“I don’t know of a back in the area that has all of the skills that he has.

He is a good of a back as we have had and he will be a great back on Saturdays, no matter what college he picks. He is a great choice for the player of the year.”

Johnson said he knew what he had to do when Davis was lost for an extended time.

“I knew I had to put the team on my back and go hard. I knew I had to take on that responsibility,” he said. “I came here and put it all on the line for my team every game.

But, I wouldn’t be anything without

those big guys up front. They knew they just had to get a key block for me and I would go and when I was in the open field, I was gone.”

Not only did Johnson shoulder the workload for the Hilltoppers, he also helped groom Davis’ fill in, sophomore Ke’Von Johnson – Michael’s cousin.

“It was great playing with him,” Michael said. “I knew what he could do, so I could push him.”

Michael said that he knew from the offseason that he would have to put work in to be the best he wanted to.

“In the summer, I knew I needed to come out here and prove to people that I am a good running back and I needed to get more schools looking at me,” Michael said. “And I guess I did it.”

All Area football team announced With the 2015 season in the books, here is the 30-man Voyager Media All-Area Football Team.

Meekah Ben-Israel Joliet West senior leader totaled 53 tackles and five tackles for loss as a defensive tackle for Joliet West.

Tuf Borland Voyager Media Defensive POY had 165 tackles, 11 for loss to lead Bolingbrook.

John Carnagio A junior quarterback from Minooka, Carnagio helped the Indians return to the playoffs this past season, throwing for 1,787 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“He will re-write the record books here at MCHS,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “Set school records for completions in a season (143) and for yards.

Completed passes to 9 different Minooka receivers in 2015. John has tremendous ability as a passer and look for him to only be better in 2016.”

Matt Chmielewski A 6-foot, 3-inch, 310-pound offensive lineman, Chmielewski was a big part of Lockport’s strong finish to the 2015 season.

“Matt is a three-year varsity

starter,” Lockport coach Daniel Starkey said. “Matt consistently graded out at a championship level, leading our offensive players each week. Matt was a physical presence and allowed our two tailbacks (Matt Skobel and Sheldon Snapp) to rush for over 1,000 yards combined.

Matt has several D1 FCS offers and has verbally committed to Southern Illinois University.”

“JD has been a three-year starter for us and was great leader in our program,” North coach Tim Kane said. “His numbers speak for themselves in terms of how much he led our offense this year. He set numerous school records for passing yardage and TDs.”

The senior offensive lineman from Notre Dame led the rushing attack for the Dons. He helped the offense finish with 1,970 yards passing and 1,902 yards rushing and an 8-2 record.

The senior from Plainfield South was a key playmaker on defense and special teams. He had 29 solo tackles as a corner, four interceptions and returned two punts for TD’s and blocked a FG. “Always drew the opponents best receiver,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “Strong, fast as a pass defender and very effective as a run support player.”

In 10 games he amassed 54 receptions (school record) for 803 yards with eight TD’s. He also accumulated 376 yards in return yardage.

“Isaiah has tremendous quickness and skill in route running along with the ability to score from anywhere on the field when the ball is in his hands,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “He also earned much of his yards and catches while being double teamed. Expect great things from him in 2016.”

Zach Jarosz A wideout from Plainfield North, Jarosz had some huge games during the season, finishing with 47 catches for 842 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“Zach has to have some of the top stats around for a WR,” Kane said. “He was a game breaker for us and proved to be a very difficult matchup for many

teams. He also set numerous school records for receiving yards and TDs.”

Kevin Jarvis The CSL South Lineman of the Year had 37 pancakes for Maine South in his junior season. He is getting looks from Big 10 schools.

“Will be second best linemen to play for Maine South only behind Dave Butz of Washington Redskins,” Maine South coach Dave Inserra said.

Eric Johnson A senior from Plainfield South, Johnson finished with 74 tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 12 sacks from his defensive end position.

“He is very difficult to single block,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “He has quickness off the ball and utilization of exceptional technique along with athleticism made him very difficult to contain.”

Dylan Koch A Plainfield East senior and Ball State commit, Koch had four touchdowns on offense and had nine tackles for loss and four sacks on defense.

“Played both sides of the ball a majority of the time,” East coach Mike Romeli said. “He is one of the best blocking tight ends in the midwest as multiple recruiters stated over the spring, summer and fall.”

Zach Lukasik Joliet Catholic senior is a 6-foot, 2-inch, 225-pound senior was the East Suburban Catholic Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year. He was also the kicker for the Hilltoppers.

Donald Manning Plainfield East senior had 15 tackles for loss and 10 sacks this year. Is committed to play at Ball State University.

“He is an impressive athlete with tremendous upside,” East coach Mike Romeli said. “Donald dominated the line of scrimmage at times and made it very difficult to do anything to his side.”

Alec McEachern Two-way player for Benet had 81 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six pass break-ups, three interceptions and six forced fumbles. On offense he ran 106 times for 608 yards and eight touchdowns.

Mark McGrath Lisle junior finished the season

with 114 carries for 504 yards and 17 catches for 430 yards. He added 560 yards passing with 14 total touchdowns, 25 extra points and converted four field goals. On defense he tallied 31 tackles and two interceptions.

“Mark led our team to a 7-2 record and a spot in the state playoffs,” Lisle coach Paul Parpat said. “He in my opinion was the most complete player in the Interstate Conference. He was our teams MVP. Two-time allconference. One of the best players in the area without a doubt.

Sean McNulty Maine South junior kicker and punter converted 9-of-12 field goals and 42-of-44 extra points and had 35 percent of his kickoffs go for touchbacks this year. He also averaged 36.7 yards per punt and was a vital piece to the Hawks’ playoff win over Plainfield North, constantly putting the Tigers deep in their own territory.

Blake Parzych Minooka senior lineman had 58 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

“Overall undisputed leader of our team for two years,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “Blake finished his career with 16 sacks and 51 TFLs. He demanded a double team from most if not all teams we played. A tremendous second effort player.”

Danny Saracco The senior from Plainfield South was a three-year starter and SPC Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the year with 98 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and six sacks.

“He is excellent to the ball,

finishes tackles, made defensive adjustments, aggressive and complete as a run and pass defender,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “He is an exceptional defensive contributor.”

Tim Simon A do-it-all player from Notre Dame, the senior was rarely off the field during a game. He finished the season catching 39 passes for 814 yards and 11 touchdowns. On defense he had 33 tackles and three interceptions.

He contributed 315 yards in punt returns with a touchdown. He converted 9-of-12 field goals and 37-of-40 extra points, averaged 33 yards per punt and also kicked off for the Dons.

Jack Sznajder The senior quarterback from Benet completed 165-of-281 passes for 1,981 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the Redwings to a playoff victory and missing one game due to injury.

Erik Swenson A 6-foot, 5-inch, 285-pound senior offensive lineman from Downers Grove South, he committed to the University of Michigan.

Women’s basketball, Leonard set Flyer records last week No. 2 Lewis women’s basketball set a program record for points in a 40-minute game on Sunday (Nov. 22) afternoon during the Flyers’ 111-50 win over Alderson Broaddus at Neil Carey Arena.

The 111 points is the most in a regulation game for the Flyers.

Lewis matched the number in an 111-105 triple-overtime win at Indianapolis on Jan. 30, 2014, but in 40 minutes of basketball, Sunday’s total is the best.

The previous high was a 110-105 win over Chicago State in 1981.

Manley encourages participation in Small Business Saturday To boost holiday shopping at local stores, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is encouraging area residents to do their postThanksgiving shopping on Small Business Saturday.

“During the holiday season, local business owners have a lot of pressure to compete with big corporations, and shoppers should consider doing a portion of their holiday shopping at stores around town,” Manley said.

“Regardless of what customers are looking for, there are many area stores that can accommodate and exceed their needs.”

Manley said she supports Small Business Saturday, a recent

state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet nationwide initiative to promote local, small businesses.

The event occurs annually the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 28 this year.

According to the Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, about $14.3 billion was spent at small, independent

stores across the country in 2014.
