Carson, 3, sits atop his dad’s shoulders to get a better view of the friendly, giant toy solider.
With the flip of a switch, thousands of sparkling lights transformed The Promenade Bolingbrook into a holiday delight Saturday evening, and the warm weather brought out scores of people for the annual tradition. Each year the village of Bolingbrook and The Promenade host the event and tree lighting to kick off the holiday season. With the village celebrating its
50th anniversary, a decision to combine some favorite traditions with newer ones was made and after eight years, the musical tree was retired. “With Bolingbrook celebrating 50 years, we wanted a more traditional and more accessible Christmas,” said Kris Kuchler, director of marketing for The Promenade. The 40-foot tree now stands in the center of the outdoor shopping area for all to see. In addition, two new trees were added, one near Macy’s and one near Sage Kitchen + Bar. In addition, thousands of lights were added throughout the entire mall, rather than only in one section as in years past. The Grinch strolled through the crowd along with giant toy
soldiers and little elves much to the delight of those who stopped to grab a picture with their favorite characters. The Bolingbrook Madrigal singers sang Christmas carols for all to hear, while visitors took in an ice sculpture or sleigh ride. While the official lighting has passed, the events are not over. Kulcher said the group has added more celebrations such as its new Fire & Ice show, scheduled for Dec. 5. In addition, two opportunities to give back to the community will be held this season, including the Dick Biondi’s traditional toy drive Dec. 12 and a food and blood drive Dec. 19. Pace approves fare increase
Expert says communication is key
Pace bus riders will pay a quarter more per ride – but only if they pay using cash. The increase was part of the suburban bus transit agency’s budget for the 2016 fiscal year. The budget also includes a 15cent increase for cash-paying riders who qualify for reduced fares. Cash-paying riders that take express buses that run between southwestern suburbs and downtown Chicago won’t be affected. The Pace Board of Directors unanimously approved the increase during its Nov. 11 meeting. The budget also calls for a total of $227.97 million in spending, $7.6 million of which will go toward service improvements. Most notably, all new Pace buses will come equipped with Wi-Fi. The new budget, along with the fare increase, will take effect Jan. 1. Until Pace’s recent implementation of the Ventra card, most riders paid in cash. The fare for standard, non-express routes is $1.75. Cash-paying riders that wished to make a transfer could pay an extra quarter and receive a magnetic strip transfer

Communication is still the best defense when it comes to protecting children, but there are tools that cane help stop online predators once parents are aware. So says Megan Books, member of the Will County State’s Attorney’s High Tech Crime’s Unit. Books recently gave a presentation on Internet safety at Lukancic Middle School, hosted by the Valley View School District. The unit has launched nearly 95 investigations and made 84 arrests of Internet predators in the past four years. Books said the unit gives presentations to pre-teens and teens in area schools on a regular basis, such as a recent discussion held a few months ago in Lockport. However, teens can still fall victim to a sexual predator. “Kids have that mentality that it won’t happen to them, that it can’t be that close to home,” said Books. But the reality is, it can be anywhere, and right in your own backyard. Books shared a few cases she had investigated in the area, including that of a 26-year-old Best Buy employee who befriended children and their parents. He won them over by showing them how to set up gaming units such as Xbox and Playstation, offering them his own employee discount. She said the man later gained access to children’s gaming IDs, eventually
soliciting sexual content from teenage victims in Bolingbrook and Romeoville. “It’s important to talk to your kids,” Books said. “Know what your kids are playing. Know who they are playing with. They should not be playing with someone they do not personally know. “Play along with them or have them tell whoever they are playing with that their mom is sitting there too—odds are no one is going to mess with that,” she added. Those rules apply to social media accounts, as well. In a time when it is popular to have as many “friends” as you can. Books advise that no one should be friends with anyone that they do not actually know. Communication is key for parents and she reminds parents that it is their responsibility to check in on what their children are doing online. “As parents we are paying for their service—they need to know that at any time you can demand to see their device. You need to know their passcode and will use it—it’s that simple,” said Books. All parents should know their child’s passcode and monitor texts and apps. She noted that parents should monitor not just their child’s phone, but gaming systems and messenger apps. Other tips to maintain safety can be simple house rules, including keeping the computer in a central location and all electronic devices off at night and charging in the living room.
“I get excuses all the time, ‘but I need my phone for an alarm,’” Books said, describing a common excuse used by children. In this example, parents can simply buy their child a $10 alarm clock. Additionally, she said location services should be on at all times. Books encouraged parents to use the Find iPhone app that will track the location of the phone and your child. Verizon offers a service for $5 a month that will shut off the phone for certain times. There are numerous tech options that can be investigated, including installing filtering and monitoring software. She said parents should consult their cellphone provider and research various options. Books added that it is important to look at individual apps and explore builtin security features; each should have their own privacy settings. For a basic look at what your child has been looking at on their computer, check out what sites have been visited on the Internet. To do this on a PC, click on the “My Computer” icon; Click on the “(C:)” icon; Click on the “Windows” folder; Click on four folders to view the sites accessed with the computer, including “History,” “Cookies,” “Temp,” and “Temporary Internet Files.” Books also reminded parents to monitor their own social media accounts and think about the type of information they may be posting. “You show a picture on Facebook of you that shows you having dinner in Chicago and your history

card, which entitles a rider to two transfers within the span of two hours. In July 2014, Pace’s old card readers were deactivated in order to complete the switch to Ventra. Cash-paying riders were no longer able to ask for transfer cards, but the fares remained the same. Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot explained that the 25-cent increase for cash-paying riders wasn’t a way to collect revenue. “Pace intends to discourage the use of cash to reduce the costs associated with processing and handling coins and bills,” he said. “[The policy] mirrors practices already in place at CTA and the Illinois Tollway.” Indeed, CTA bus riders who pay fares in cash currently have to pay an extra 25 cents. Wilmot explained that Pace planned to implement the fare increase as part of the switch to Ventra, but the agency ultimately decided to hold off to give riders time to transition to the cards. Unlike CTA, however, Wilmot said Pace doesn’t have a large network of train stations where it could place Ventra vending machines. That meant that most riders had to either order the cards

Trio launches program for disadvantaged students Three staff members at Bolingbrook High School have launched a new program designed to help make everyday life a little better for homeless and/or disadvantaged students. The Connect Program, housed in a tiny room on the third floor of the high school, is in its infancy stages, but BHS Special Education Case Managers Alice Cameron and Kim McElroy, as well security guard Leda Martinez, are pleased with the reaction from both staff and students thus far. “Many of our caseload students are in need of a lot of resources,” McElroy said. “We wondered how we could help, how we could give back to these students. We decided to collect clothing for the winter season and also for prom as well.”
Since the concept was first introduced at the start of the current school year, BHS staff has responded to the efforts of the Connect staff with donations of everything from shoes to clothing and jackets. Connect also collected toiletries for the Nov. 7 Families In Transition event sponsored by the Will County Regional Office of Education and Valley View School District 365U. Each month involves a donation theme with October and November focusing on coats and blue jeans and February and March featuring prom dress donations. The December effort will seek gift cards to be given to students for the holidays. Now that the closet is stocked, the trio hopes to receive referrals
from BHS counselors and social workers. Students themselves can also contact Connect directly. “Everything is kept completely confidential,” McElroy said. The Connect room includes a “dressing curtain” behind which students can try on clothing to make sure it fits before they take it home. Cameron, McElroy and Martinez hope to serve VVSD middle school students somewhere down the road. “I’m proud to be part of this,” said Martinez, who has been with VVSD for nearly eight years and commutes every day from Hammond. “I love it. I love my school.” “It makes me feel great to give back,” McElroy added.

But in July 2014, the process wasn’t as far along as the agency would have liked. The situation has improved significantly since then, Wilmot explained. “We are much further along than we were in the past,” he said. “Approximately 80 percent of fares on Pace are currently paid using Ventra cards.” The increase won’t affect express bus routes that charge premium fares. This includes routes 755 and 855, which run between Plainfield and Chicago, and routes 850 and 851, which run between Bolingbrook and Chicago.

The budget calls for Pace to spend $7.6 million on service improvements. According to the budget, Pace plans to order 75 new buses – 72 for regular routes and three for express routes. Before adopting the budget, Pace held 13 public hearings in Chicago and the six suburban counties it serves. According to Rocky Donahue, one of Pace’s Deputy Executive Directors, riders that attended those meetings didn’t have many complaints about the budget. While the budget is balanced, the paratransit service portion of the budget is only balanced if Illinois pays the annual $8.5 million paratransit grant. In a statement to the press, Wilmot wrote that if the grant doesn’t materialize, Pace may need to raise paratransit fares to cover the cost.

The U.S. Government emphatically states though the website of its Office of Personnel Management that “employees have a responsibility to report waste, fraud and abuse,” and that the American “public is also invited to share such concerns.” In order to ensure an efficient and honest government, there are programs in place to allow the people who work in the government to report, free from retaliation, when fraud, waste or abuse occurs. Yet all too often when people decide to take the risk by reporting wrongdoing, they not only aren’t protected, but are attacked by the very government whose interests they seek to protect. The most recent example of this sad penchant involves recently retired Army officer Lt. Col. Jason Amerine, a highly decorated combat veteran. In late 2013 he was part of an exclusive cell operating out of the Pentagon charged with trying to gain the release of U.S. hostages in various parts of the world. Amerine saw firsthand the dysfunctional interagency squabbling that sabotaged efforts to win the freedom of some American hostages. He was so incensed by the failures of the agencies that he approached a member of Congress to report the matter. But in January of this year, one of
the organizations of that dysfunctional team – the FBI – sought to put Lt. Col. Amerine “in his place” by asking the Army to open an investigation, stripping him of his security clearance and effectively silencing any further actions. The inability of the multiple government agencies to work together might have been a contributing factor in the death of one hostage and caused the U.S. to pay a significantly higher strategic price for the release of another. Amerine officially retired from the Army this month, without any charges filed and was awarded the Legion of Merit. While it is gratifying to see Amerine justly cleared of all allegations and winning back his personal honor, the question must be asked: what happened to the individuals in the FBI and CID who were responsible for retaliating against him? The personal hell whistleblowers suffer cannot be overstated. In 2012 after returning from my second combat deployment to Afghanistan, like Amerine, I approached several members of the House and Senate to tell them the claims of our most senior civilian and military leaders that the war was going well were simply untrue. I also published an unclassified report exposing the truth. As a result I was treated like a pariah. Daily life became almost unbearable, as I was marginalized by superiors; even friends and coworkers feared to be seen talking to me. I can only imagine how much worse life was for people like Jason Amerine, who were subjected to punitive and baseless investigations. Changes must be made so that governmental agencies and officials
are not able to wantonly make spurious accusations against men and women who blow the whistle on fraud, waste or abuse in an effort to silence them. By making the whistleblowers pay a high personal price, some in the government send a quiet message to others who may consider exposing wrongdoing: don’t even think about saying anything because we’ll make your life a living hell. Help may be on the way. Working in conjunction with the Project On Government Oversight, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, and Rep. Jackie Speier, D-California, introduced the “Legal Justice for Servicemembers Act,” which seeks to redress some of the weaker points of existing whistleblower protection provisions. Some of the key features of this bill include permitting legal challenges to retaliatory investigations, establishing fair burdens of proof to establish retaliation, and giving the Inspector General the authority to issue a 90 day “stay” on alleged retaliation while it completes its investigation. America needs men and women in military service with the moral courage to tell the truth. They carry out a valuable service to the nation by helping to keep government officials honest and by bringing to light situations that need redress which otherwise would remain buried. The least we can do for the courageous people who keep our government accountable is to provide them with legal safeguards. Lt. Col. Daniel L. Davis, USA (Ret.) – His work on defense, foreign affairs and social issues has been published in The New York Times, Financial Times, CNN, The Guardian, U.S. News & World Report, and other publications. He was also the recipient of the 2012 Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling.
letter to the editor
All veterans are heroes All veterans matter; living or deceased. They all deserve our everlasting gratitude. Can we as everyday people, imagine what veterans think about? When a man or a woman put on the uniform, they never know where they will be sent, and if they will ever come home. The wounded warriors have many obstacles to overcome. Some veterans are wounded physically, some are wounded mentally. You do
not always see mental wounds, but they are always there, hidden. My knowledge of a wounded mind has empowered and carried me a lifetime. It is addiction. There are many different addictions. There is help now for many returning. Years ago only physical wounds were addressed. Many men and women came home years ago with wounded minds because of their exposure to war. The horror of friends killed in front of their faces remain forever with them. Many 12 step programs, which are much needed, are always available as a solemn fortress. I recently read a true story of one of our living 91-year-old Vietnam veterans who witnessed his buddy killed. When he went back to retrieve
him, his body was composed. Can we as protected Americans ever conceive such valor? My eyes fill with tears as I write and reminisce some of my husband’s small combat stories. What can I, or we, as a grateful country give them back what they so much deserve? Our wounded warriors, some forgotten, some homeless, some beaten inside and out are forever in our hearts. All veterans are heroes, alive or dead, every day, not just on Veterans Day. Is thank you adequate or sufficient? Is thank you enough? Shirlee J. Pergler Romeoville Resident

Clark tabbed as volleyball Player of the Year By Mark Gregory sports reporter
mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard
Tiffany Clark wanted to be a soccer player. In her early years, going to volleyball was not something the Benet Academy senior wanted to do. But with a little convincing, she did and it was a great decision. “Soccer was my sport. I came from a soccer family and I wanted to jump on that bandwagon,” Clark said. “My mom had to drag me to volleyball practices when I was 11 or 12 years old and I started liking it more and more and the rest is history.” Clark was the East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year, is Second Team Under Armor All-American, 18U AllAmerica. She was named to the all-tournament team in all four of Benet’s tournaments this season and was MVP of the Wheaton Classic and Autumnfest. She posted 179 kills, 390 digs and 17 blocks on the season. For her efforts, she has been named the 2015 Voyager Media Volleyball Player of the Year. “Tiffany is the hardest working player we have ever had at Benet,” said Benet coach Brad Baker. “She has an extremely high motor and is driven to be best. She sets high goals for herself and works very hard to achieve them.” During her transition from soccer to volleyball, Clark never imagined the accolades that would come with her new sport. “Back then I never thought I would play on state championship caliber teams or playing for the United States,” she said. “They were pretty humble beginnings, but I am glad I choose volleyball and I’m glad my mom pushed me to do it.” A libero by trade, Clark moved to
outside hitter a few weeks into the high school season, but still posted a 73.2 percent dig percentage for the Redwings, committing only 60 errors in 451 attempts. “It was tough,” Clark said. “But, I do enjoy hitting the ball even though I am a libero at heart. I was willing to do whatever coach wanted to do because I trust him and I thought the switch was beneficial for the team. It was a good change of pace getting to hit once in a while.” Now that high school is over, it is back to libero for Clark as she heads to the University of Michigan. “I am excited to start club,” Clark said. “I am really looking forward to Michigan. I committed a while ago, but I still have the same enthusiasm as I did sophomore. I am excited to go play in Ann Arbor and play at one of the highest levels of volleyball that you can without playing for the United States. I am looking forward to playing in the Big Ten and starting the next chapter in my life.” The rest of the Voyager Media All-Area Volleyball Team consists of:
Niki Ahlstrand Maine East outside hitter had 243 kills, 92 blocks and 42 aces for the Demons.
Eleni Balourdos The junior setter from Niles West finished the season with 1,528 assists, 109 digs, 66 aces and 38 blocks for the Wolves.
Jennilyn Cave Bolingbrook senior setter had 528 assists, a .319 hitting percentage, 38 aces and 116 digs. “Jennilyn played for varsity three years, and her experience had a great influence on our team this

Shannon Doran Senior setter helped Joliet West win a regional title. She finished the season with 643 assists, 47 aces, 137 digs and 25 blocks. “Shannon was the glue to our team this year,” West coach Al Mart said. “She did a tremendous job running our offense. By far, our most improved player this past year.”
Erin Eulitz A senior from Plainfield Central, Eulitz tallied 315 kills, 29 aces and 296 digs, while hitting at a .261
clip. “Erin was our go-to hitter this year,” Central coach Erik Vogt said. “When Elizabeth Hyland left last year we had no idea how we will fill the void. Erin took that spot and made it her own. Not only was Erin an effective passer this season but a very powerful hitter. She might be the best defensive player (that’s not a libero) in our area.”
Emily Hise Minooka senior totaled 117 kills and 122 blocks from her middle position. “Emily has one of the best blocks in the area,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “She has been a strong force in our defense and also shows great leadership. She has committed to Florida Atlantic University.”
JoDee Kovanda
Deyshia Lofton
Lockport sophomore did a little bit of everything for the Porters, finishing with 202 kills, 271 assists, 169 digs and 39 aces. “Our only six-rotation player for the entire season,” Lockport coach Nick Mraz said. “Led the team in kills and second on the team in assists. Her versatility can be seen with her aces, blocks and digs as well. Combined, she accounted for the most points scored on the team.”
A senior from Plainfield South, Lofton totaled 131 kills and 125 blocks for the Cougars. She will be playing at Indiana University next year. “Deyshia has been a threeyear varsity starter, she has been a great leader for our team this year,” South coach Amanda CejaO’Boyle said. “She broke our block record last year with 139 blocks. This year she broke the career blocking stats with 332 our original record was 168. She will be very successful in her future years as a volleyball player.”
Allie Lindroth Plainfield North senior outside finished her four-year varsity career with the Tigers, winning three regionals and one sectional title. She is committed to Northwestern University in Evanston.
Madeline Lubeck Westmont setter had602 assists, 69 kills and 46 aces, leading the Sentinels to the sectional final. “She ran a 5-1 offense the past two years and was a leader on
and off the court,” Westmont coach Jennifer Gilwa-Bell said. “She has great set selection and was an offensive threat as well. As a sophomore she ran a 5-1 that resulted in a 28-1 record; the varsity team has had two 20 plus win seasons under her direction, Madeline was the team’s MVP as a junior and was nominated and selected as captain this year.”
Sara Nielsen A junior setter from Benet, Nielsen tallied 883 assists, 38 aces and 190 digs for the sectional champs. She is committed to the University of Minnesota and is 78-4 in her two years as setter.

She is a strong leader who helped build this team up from the beginning of the season by motivating and encouraging these young girls. She kept our team together and never thought of herself. She is going to Southern Illinois University next fall.”
Rachel Schneider Schneider, a Downers South senior, tallied 242 kills, 71 blocks and 159 digs for the Mustangs. “She has been a leader on the team, and the MVP of the team,” South coach Trisha Kurth said.
Ashley Shook Plainfield Central junior posted 666 assists, 232 digs, 109 blocks, 29 aces, 141 kills and a .354 hitting percentage. She is committed to the University of Texas. “Ashley played all world for us this season,” Vogt said. “Ashley played middle and set for us half the season. Then she set from the RS for the second half of the season. It didn’t matter what we asked her to do she did it. She kept our hitters in rhythm when
our passing wasn’t. It didn’t matter who we played this year we had a chance when Ashley was on the court. She loved the spotlight and always elevated the level of play of her teammates around her. She is a three-time All-Conference selection.”
Jessica Simon Joliet Catholic senior had 151 kills, 29 blocks, 276 assists and 150 digs for the Angels. “Jessica has taken charge of the team with her setting and the running of the offense,” JCA coach Chris Scheibe said. “She can score points not only as a setter but also as a hitter. She has seen more time on the floor than any other player because of her steady presence and abilities.”
Veronica Snelling A junior from Benet, Snelling had 247 kills, 22.5 blocks and a 53 percent kill percentage. “One of the most dominant hitters in the area/state, led our team in kills, hitting percentage and blocks,” Baker said.
Lauren Stefanski A Joliet West senior, Stefanski totaled 335 kills, 59 aces, 195 digs and 78 blocks for the regional champs. “Lauren was a force this year and should continue to excel at the next level,” Mart said.
11
MacKenzi Welsh The four-year starter for Plainfield East finished with 444 assists, 216 digs, 131 kills, 51 aces and 31 blocks. She was named a second-team Under Armour All-American. Headed to the University of Michigan. “Running a 5-1 these past two years she has helped us keep consistency with our hitters and increased our overall kill percentage,” East coach Emily Tonon said. “Whether or not she got a good pass from our serve receive, she was always able to put the ball up to one of hitters to set up our offense. Her ability to see what is happening on her own side of the court, while assessing what is happening on the other side of the net before she makes her decision where to set is an invaluable skill she has come to master.”
Taylor Zurliene A junior from JCA, Zurliene had 213 kills, 29 aces and 258 digs for the state finalists. “Taylor is a consistent player who can be relied on game after game to perform to the best of her abilities,” Scheibe said. “For her size, she is very powerful and has an explosive jump, and she is one of the most athletic players you will find.” -Scott Taylor contributed

Lewis University redshirtsenior guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball, the league announced on Monday (Nov. 16). In 70 minutes of work, Johnson averaged 22.0 points and 4.5 assists per game, including a 9.0 assists/turnover ratio, to lead the No. 2 Flyers to two wins during the 2015-16 opening weekend. Lewis topped regional foe Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, 65-56, before beating another in-region opponent in Northwood 78-57 on Sunday. The reigning GLVC Player of the Year got the season started with 21 points on 9-of-18 (.500) from the field, adding two assists and as many rebounds against SVSU. She one-upped herself against Northwood the next day, scoring 23 points and dishing out seven helpers while shooting 60 percent from behind the arc. “Jamie played at a very high level this weekend,” Lewis head coach Kristen Gillespie said. “She set the tone for us on both ends
of the court. What impressed me the most was her ability to create shots for her teammates while also scoring within the framework of our offense.” The South Holland, Ill., native earns her third career weekly honor and is the first Flyer selected since teammate Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) earned the nod January 5, 2015.
vOllEyBall No. 23 Lewis women’s volleyball out-hit Saint Joseph’s .210 to .043 on Saturday (Nov. 14) afternoon to sweep the Pumas 25-13, 25-20, 25-15 in a Great Lakes Conference match. The win, combined with a loss by McKendree to Southern Indiana on Saturday, gives Lewis a share of the 2015 GLVC East Division Championship. Senior Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) led Lewis with nine kills. Sophomore Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) added eight kills. Sophomore Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) also had eight kills with the addition of five aces. The closest set was the second.
Lewis had a 23-11 lead only to see Saint Joseph’s push back with a 7-1 run. The Flyers eventually won the set by five points. “Getting a share of the division wasn’t something we were thinking about,” Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Many teams in the league had much more to play for this weekend than we did, for us it was finding that fight within as we enter the postseason.” Saint Joseph’s finishes their 2015 season 8-21 (3-15 GLVC) while Lewis improves to 27-4 (153 GLVC). The Flyers return to the court for the GLVC Tournament on Friday, November 20. Lewis is the No. 2 seed in the East and will play No. 3 seed in the West Drury in the opening round. The match with the Panthers will start at 5 p.m. All GLVC Tournament games will be played at the EastSide Center in East Peoria, Illinois and air online on GLVCSN. Though McKendree and Lewis tied for the East Division Championship, McKendree earns the No. 1 East seed thanks to defeating Lewis in the regular season.

Plan for travel time, watch anxiety disappear Do you feel like you’re always other issues as well, such as being running late to appointments and anxious about arriving early, but ignoring how long it takes events no matter how hard to get somewhere is almost you try to be on time? Do always part of the mix. youfrequentlylosepatience So what’s the solution? when caught in traffic While it may seem obvious, because you’re rushing to being cognizant of how long get somewhere? Many of it takes to get somewhere my clients, especially those is the first, often-ignored, with ADHD, experience the Sue Becker step. If you’re not good at same frustration. Come To Order estimating travel time, use One common cause of a tool such as an online their recurring tardiness is not building travel time into their mapping program (Google Maps), schedule. There are sometimes a mapping app on your phone or a
GPS to get you started. If they have real-time updating capability, these tools already take traffic into account. If they don’t automatically update, add extra time as appropriate. For example, if I’m traveling in morning or evening rush hour (aka “slow hour”) I’ll always add on extra time. I’ve gone so far as to sometimes double the time given to account for traveling during a heavy traffic time of day. I even add on time to the estimates given by real-time devices, because even
they sometimes don’t get it right. Secondly, allow for parking and walking time at your destination. If you’ll have to search for a parking spot, allow time to find and pay for the spot. If you’ll have to walk a long way from your parking spot to your destination, allow time for that. If you’re going into an office building or highrise, add elevator waiting and transit time. Next, record the travel time on your calendar (you do have a calendar, right?). If your appointment time is at noon, and
you’ve generously estimated it will take a half hour to get there, block off 11:30 a.m. to noon on your calendar so you can be sure you’ve set aside the right amount of time. Honor the 11:30 timeslot as diligently as you would that noon appointment – make sure you’re out the door when you need to be. that, although adults believe that social as well as physical safety is a mild and sometimes moderately severe problem, students consistently rate school safety as a ‘severe problem,’” said Robin Lichty, president of the BHS PTA. According to figures compiled
by the school district, more than 50 percent of students in many school communities do not feel safe in school. Additionally, 1 in 3 students report being bullied. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention affirmed that bullying is a public health problem. “The BHS rally is designed to allow our community to show it wants to empower our students to do what is right when doing right is hard to do,” Lichty said. “Students need to know that we support their efforts to speak up when they see bullying happen,
when they are bullied and when they feel the need to be a bully. We need to instill resiliency in them to survive in any situation.” The tentative program includes motivational speaker Dwayne Bryant, as well as local published author and poet James McGrew. Anyone wishing to speak should contact Robin Lichty at 630-6603215. The event is co-sponsored by the Walgreens Expressions Challenge. Information on the challenge is available at www. expressionschallenge.com.
