Senior Star hosts CBS News correspondent Journalist Barry Petersen to discuss Alzheimer’s disease Nov. 17 Struggling with the devastation of Alzheimer’s disease can take its toll on a family and learning how to cope is a much-needed measure. Senior Star at Weber Place is inviting the public to hors d’oeuvres and a special presentation by CBS

News correspondent Barry Petersen from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 605 South Edward Drive, Romeoville. The presentation, “Love Lost to the Long Goodbye of Alzheimer’s” will describe the impact the disease had on

Petersen’s life and personal journey. He will share his experiences with his wife, Jan Chorlton, from the time her memory changed at age 40 until doctors officially diagnosed her with Alzheimer’s at age 55 to her death in May 2013 at age 63. Chorlton had worked as a TV journalist early in her career, traveling the world to cover the news. She also reported for CNN,

ABC and CBS “Sunday Morning.” Petersen has chronicled Alzheimer’s grip on America with a riveting report, a CBS “Sunday Morning” story, first airing June 20, 2010, which focused on Chorlton living full-time at an assisted living community in Denver. The story earned a national 2011 Edward R. Murrow Award and was nominated for a 2011 Emmy Award.

Petersen also wrote a book, “Jan’s Story,” describing life and the loss the couple endured during their experience. Among Senior Star’s 14 senior living communities in the United States, five provide memory support, including Senior Star at Weber Place. Senior Star associates work with residents and their families to help everyone through the Alzheimer’s journey. “Bringing in speakers like Barry Petersen is just one of many ways Senior Star helps further educate the public on the effects Alzheimer’s has on families and loved ones. Knowing that no one is alone on this challenging journey, we encourage others to join us for this special presentation,” said Tom Johnsrud, executive director of Senior Star at Weber Place. Check-in begins at 6 p.m. and the program follows at 6:30 p.m. The first 25 people who register for this free event will receive a signed copy of Petersen’s book, “Jan’s Story.” Please RSVP no later than Nov. 16 by calling 815-439-2033 to reserve your spot. For more information about Senior Star at Weber Place or to schedule a tour, call 815-4392033 or visit the website at www. seniorstar.com.

The community is getting ready to embark on its all-out adventure to make the Thanksgiving and days beyond a little more nourishing in more ways than one. It’s about rolling up your sleeves, giving back, and helping out your friends and neighbors, no questions asked. It’s become the norm for hundreds of residents, young and old, to knock on doors, fill trunk loads of donations and package it all up on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year, Nov. 21 will mark the 22nd Northern Will County Harvest Saturday food drive at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 505 Kingston Ave., Romeoville. “For the past twenty-two years, this has become a yearly family tradition,” said organizer Deb Eischen. “For others it has been a way to make new friends that last because they have come together for the sake of serving others. Having volunteers that keep coming back ‘claiming’ their jobs, or those that started when they were in grade school and are still coming back to us as adults is a feeling of gratitude that mere words can’t express.” Eischen explains that though it is sponsored by area churches including St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Community Christian Church, United Presbyterian Church and The Rock Church, it is important to note that it is not a “church thing.” “It is really many denominations

forming one community to serve the needs of others. It was started by St. Andrews and Good Shepherd, but has grown into a melting pot of people that care,” said Eischen. The group usually collects anywhere from 1,000 to 1,200 boxes of food. One of the goals is to raise enough funds to support the two main food pantries that service the Romeoville area in the spring as well, because that is when food pantries are extremely low on food items. The collection last year allowed a $400 donation to each pantry and the group hopes to be able to do it again. “Many people don’t realize that, although Romeoville is extremely caring and supportive in giving to others, this same community is just as needy of the services provided by Harvest Saturday,” said organizer Deb Eischen. “The food collected helps to support four food pantries and the money that is collected helps to support five food pantries.” For those that wish to help out the day of the event, some new changes have been incorporated. For those driving to collect food, a driver’s license and insurance card must be provided. A form is available online, as well as all the other information on Harvest Saturday at www.andrewcc.org/ harvest-Saturday. Organizers are asking for residents to donate non-perishable items to be placed in plastic bags outside their front door by 11 a.m. Nov. 21. One of the many volunteers will come by for pick up between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Volunteers will pick

Drop-off boxes will be located at the following places through Nov. 20: Romeoville Fire Station #3, 698 N. Birch Lane; Romeoville Recreation Center, 900 W. Romeo Road; Romeoville Village Hall, 1050 W. Romeo Road.

up donated items from all areas of Romeoville except Remington Apartments and High Point. Food items in great need are those that can be used as a meal without adding much to the dish, such as soup, stews, veggies, pasta meals, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce, pasta/rice, breakfast cereal/ bars, instant potatoes, stuffing mix, Bisquick, pancake mix, flour, sugar, jello, etc. In addition, toiletries are needed including soaps, diapers, etc. Perishable items may be donated but must be dropped off at the church. Please check expiration dates on the food as the food pantries will not be able to accept anything that is expired. Monetary donations also are accepted; make checks payable to St. Andrew Harvest Saturday. Volunteers are still needed, for more information call Bernadette Sedlacek at 815-886-4165, ext. 303 or come to church at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 21. If you would like to donate items, but won’t be home on that day or live outside of the area, drop-off boxes will be located in the church hallway, and at the following places through Nov. 20: Romeoville Fire Station #3, 698 North Birch Lane; Romeoville Recreation Center, 900 W. Romeo Road; Romeoville Village Hall, 1050 W. Romeo Road. Since Romeoville Fire Station #1 is under construction, no drop off is available this year.

Valley View mulls significant capital improvement Proposed roof replacements raise possibility of solar panels By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

After holding back on some capital improvements for the past few years due to budget constraints, the Valley View School District is proposing to take on critical repairs this summer. Each year the district evaluates its schools and has identified major projects in need of repair to ensure the appropriate environment for students. “When the economy was down, we managed dollars wisely and pushed repairs out further,” said School Board President Steve Quigley. “We have somewhat recovered in our budget, and now it’s time to move forward with this.” The largest projects will be the possible replacement of roofs at five schools including BJ Ward, Irene King, Jamie McGee Elementary Schools, and Jane Addams and Humphrey middle schools.

Each of these roofs are 20 or more years old and have reached their useful performance, according to the district. Some schools, such as BJ Ward, have already faced issues, with roofs needing temporary repairs. In addition to replacing the roof membranes at these five schools, the district has also been exploring methods of energy conservation and the possible use of solar panels. The administration presented an information report to the school board at its past meeting to begin discussion for such projects. Through its Comprehensive Energy and Environmental Management Initiative, the district has been embracing energy efficiency in all its project for the past six years. In keeping with those energyconservation practices, the district has identified a unique opportunity to provide solar voltaic panels on the roof at the five schools requiring roof replacement. The initial cost is estimated at approximately

$6 million. However, the district expects a 100 percent payback in approximately 11 years, plus additional savings in utility costs. Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi explained that using such technology hasn’t always been affordable. However, Solar Renewable Energy Certificates are now being offered through the Illinois Power Agency, which are funded through utility dollars collected for this purpose. The report indicated that after 15 years the energy savings plus SREC income would offset the district’s total electric utility bill consumption at those schools, a savings projected at more than $500,000 annually. “These green projects were always considered great, but the payback wouldn’t have come for 20 years plus,” Grizaffi said. “But now, that time is cut in half. It’s just good timing, and we would really like to move forward.” The district’s plan is to implement the solar panel project in conjunction with the roofing projects. Grizaffi reported that the combination of energy savings

generated by the solar panels, along with the SREC rebates, would actually self-fund the solar-panel project completely and reduce the annual utility bill beginning with the initial date of installation. The savings will be rolled back into paying for the roof project costs.

Site Improvements In addition, much needed site improvements are being proposed for Romeoville High School, including the complete replacement of the student parking lot and the drive lane from Taylor Road. The project will allow for a redesign of vehicle circulation, permitting student cars and parent drop off to flow more efficiently and safely. As with Romeoville High School, the report indicated that the parking lots at Tibbott are reaching their serviceable life, and the staff lot is in the poorest condition and will require immediate replacement. Along with this lot, the project would include a new dedicated bus drop-off zone on the northeast side of the school, separating bus traffic

from parent and staff vehicles. The district has been successful in implementing similar design layouts at King and Salk elementary schools and Brooks Middle School, with reduced drop-off and pick-up times and improved safety. The school is also in need of a permanent playground area, as they currently close a portion of the main parking lot during recess to accommodate recreation activities. This project would include a new playground on the east side of the school, adjacent to the school’s edible garden project. The second phase of mechanical infrastructure at Brooks Middle would include replacement of the boiler plant, air-handling equipment and upgraded building automation system, along with ductwork and piping infrastructure. This, according to the report, would ensure reliable heating and comfort conditions throughout the school. The Valley View Board of Education is expected to discuss the projects further at its next meeting, which is scheduled for Nov. 16.

Brooks Middle School to perform ‘Just Another Snow Day’ The scenes are hilarious in the sparkling comedy “Just Another Snow Day” on stage at Brooks Middle School Nov. 18-20. Check out how an unexpected day off from school can be an answer to a prayer…or not! Sweethearts Mark and Jessica aren’t feeling very sweet when, after a whole night of decorating the gym, the winter homecoming dance is cancelled. Meanwhile, Paul is thrilled to get an invitation from Mary to go sledding, if only his overprotective mother will chill. Then there’s poor Julie – will

she ever figure out how to get her tongue unstuck from the frozen flagpole? Woven throughout the many scenes, Trenton, a student, and Mr. Ruffino, his drama teacher, battle the weather and each other to get their copies of the latest game “Zombie Apocalyptico 7” before the post office closes. By evening, the school theater becomes the place to be when the power goes out and the generator kicks on. Tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the door. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m.

From this point forward, the Bolingbrook High School stadium concession stand will be known as the Dan Jones Concession Stand in honor of the longtime Bolingbrook resident who has volunteered countless hours to BHS athletics and the community. Board of Education President Steve Quigley presented Jones with

a board proclamation praising him for “decades of service, dedication and devotion to Valley View School District 365U, Bolingbrook High School and the BHS Athletic Booster Club.” Jones, a Bolingbrook resident since 1994, has been a volunteer coach for BHS baseball since 2003. Despite holding a full time job with IBM, the Raider Athletic Booster Club Executive Board member spends 20 to 30 hours a week making sure everything is in order at the concession stand. “Dan makes sure people walk away with a smile on their face when they attend the many athletic events at BHS,” said BHS Assistant Principal for Athletics and Activities Rob Rose, who also presented Jones with a Pillar of Valley View award Monday night. “Dan’s commitment to Bolingbrook High School and Raider Athletics is unparalleled.”

Former VVSD student living a dream as Humphrey’s Band Director When Danielle Hayes was a sophomore at Bolingbrook High School, she wanted to attend Wilco Area Career Center so she could work as a cosmetologist to help fund her college education. But those plans quickly went down the drain when she learned she couldn’t attend Wilco and also be in the BHS band program. “I was so bent out of shape. Band was my everything. I needed band in my life,” the Humphrey Middle School’s new Band Director recalled. “That’s when I decided this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” Hayes, a graduate of Independence Elementary School, Addams Middle School and BHS, readily admits she wanted the Humphrey job “ever since I heard [long-time HHH Band Director] Deb [Brubeck] was retiring.” The lifelong resident of Bolingbrook credits former Jane Addams Band Director Leroy Eversgerd with inspiring her to pursue a career in music education. “When I was in seventh or eighth grade, I knew I wanted to be a math teacher or a band director because of the way my teachers had always inspired me. I wanted to be there for students,” she said. “I realized later I got my passion for music from Leroy. The man had passion like you wouldn’t believe.” Hayes went to Joliet Junior College on a Foundation Scholarship where she majored in music and played the flute

in the JJC band and percussion ensemble, and sang in the JJC Chamber Singers. She transferred to VanderCook College of Music and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Her first professional position was as a general music and choir teacher for four elementary schools in the WheatonWarrenville school district. After two years, she headed to the Chaney-Monge school district in Crest Hill where she directed several bands, choir, and taught kindergarten through sixth grade general music for another two years. And then the Humphrey position became available. “It was my goal to be here and now I have reached that goal,” she said. “It’s amazing. It’s surreal. I’m excited to be here.” Hayes calls herself a “freelance musician,” playing the flute in churches and at weddings and funerals. She plays in community ensembles in the Chicago area and she also gives private lessons. “I love performing,” she said. “I practice every day.” The new band director says the Humphrey program is “fantastic.” She admits she is fortunate to have such an active band parent group. She adds that it’s not easy following “a legend in the band world.” “I just have to do my own thing,” Hayes said. “Obviously I can’t be Deb Brubeck. You can’t replace someone like that. You just have to do what works for you.”

That means, among other things, launching a jazz band. “We’ll give it a shot,” she said. “My job is to instill a love and a passion for music. That’s what I do.”

With attention to women’s issues and gender-based inequality becoming more prominent in the last few years, many of us have asked the question: Is there still a wage gap between men and women? Despite the fact that I am a woman, and so have my own biases toward the question, it is clear to me that the answer is yes – the wage gap is not a myth. Some have argued that because women tend to take time off for raising children and pregnancy, the difference in compensation is justifiable. Others point to the belief that women aren’t as aggressive as their male counterparts when negotiating salaries. According to an article by Harvard Business Review, research shows that women are more reticent than men to negotiate their salary offers. The article states that this reticence is based on an accurate read of the social environment. “Women get a nervous feeling about negotiating for higher pay because they are intuiting – correctly – that self-advocating for higher pay would present a socially difficult situation for them – more so than for men.” These are just some of the arguments that I’ve heard time and time again when the topic of equal pay between men and women is brought up. To be clear, I’m not talking about the

wage gap between a woman who has only worked, say, five years and a man who’s worked 15. This example of a difference in pay is presumably based on experience and should be factored into hiring decisions. I’m talking about situations where a man and a woman with the same education and applying for the same position, yet the male employee is much more likely to be paid more. The wage gap is a large area of concern for feminists because it’s an issue that has gone on for decades and received little redress. In a Time Magazine article from August, the author, Kerri Anne Renzulli, points out that some studies don’t take into consideration the fact that women do take more time off from work due to pregnancy and child care or that women tend to go into lower-paying fields. However, Renzulli notes that the gap still wouldn’t disappear completely. “You still wouldn’t get to zero.” The gap would shrink to about 93 to 95 cents for white women, according to the article. Without this adjustment, statistics show that women make about 77 cents to every dollar a man makes. And while the gap has narrowed since the 1970s, it does still exist – despite those who argue against to the contrary. The gap is even larger for women of color. According to a study done by the American Association of University Women, Hispanic women were only paid 54 percent of a white man’s

earnings in 2014. African American women were paid 63 percent, and white women were paid 78 percent of a white man’s earnings. Even when all factors are equal, compensation is not. A 2014 study from the U.S. Department of Labor showed that there is still a 7 percent discrepancy between men and women with equal educations and the same career choices. Additionally, the gap increases as women age. On average, women under 35, or “millenials,” earn 90 percent of what men their age earn. When education and career choice are the exact same, the wage gap still exists. And while it is clear that pay discrimination is a problem and steps have been taken to address it, why do women still find they are taking home less than male colleagues? According to the National Organization for Women, the wage gap is not expected to close until 2058 at the current rate of increase. That means 2015 high school graduates will be 61 before they can expect equal pay. During President Obama’s 2014 state of the union address, he expressed his own feelings on the gender wage gap. “I firmly believe when women succeed, America succeeds,” Obama said. “Today, women make up about half of our workforce, but they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, that is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment.” Later in 2014, on Equal Pay Day, President Obama signed two executive orders intended to narrow the gap between wages for different genders. During his remarks at the event, Obama said on the gender gap, “It’s not a myth; it’s math.” Well put, Mr. President.

Governor’s amendatory veto strips vulnerable citizens of healthcare Governor Rauner’s Amendatory Veto of House Bill 2482 eliminates medical care for Illinois’ most vulnerable citizens. Rauner’s view of the future of long term care for people who cannot dress themselves or manage their own medication is to keep them isolated in an apartment with assistance of a parttime housekeeper.

Rauner’s amendatory veto strips away 24-hour skilled medical care and replaces it with a few hours a week of housekeeping chores. This move is strictly about money and politics, and not about the care needs of elderly people. With one pen stroke, elderly people and their families lost the right to choose the best health care setting based on their individual health care

needs and family circumstances. The Health Care Council of Illinois calls on members of the General Assembly to override this Amendatory Veto and uphold dignified medical care for our most vulnerable citizens. Pat Comstock Executive Director Health Care Council of Illinois

Donny Simpson was a four-year letterwinner, three-time captain and a two-time state medalist, taking third in 2010 and second in 2009 at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament for Romeoville High School. Prior to moving to the area, he was an undefeated state champion in Wisconsin. Simpson is now an assistant coach with the Bolingbrook High School wrestling team and on November 20, he will show his students, he is more than just a teacher – he is an athlete. Simpson will headline the More MMA Classic VII when the mixed martial arts card at the Edward Hospital Events Center, 55 Phelps Avenue in Romeoville when he fights Sam Agushi, a resident of Princeton, IL for the vacated 155 pound MoreMMA Lightweight title. “We are excited to have the event in Romeoville,” said fight promoter Ed Walz. “The place is great and it will add to it having Donny on the card.” Walz promotes the fight on Facebook, saying, “These two guys have just about seen it all in [amateur] MMA and now they will face each other. This will be a Pro level fight, two very impressive fighters.” “I am really excited to be fighting in my home town,” Simpson said. “I know I will bring out a lot of people and put on a great show and show the high school and youth wrestlers

That is where Simpson trains and coaches. “Part of my motivation is the kids,” Simpson said. “A lot of these coaches tell kids about what they used to do, but a lot of the kids probably don’t understand that the coaches really went through what they are going through now with the training and mental battle. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $50 for a VIP table. Remembering Charlie Three-time Voyager Media baseball Player of the Year died last week By Mark Gregory sports reporter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard

Charlie Donovan, a 2015 Westmont graduate, died suddenly Thursday night. Donovan, was recruited to the University of Michigan out of high school, but had deferred his enrollment because of a bout with mono over the summer. He was the 2015 Gatorade Illinois Baseball Player of the Year and was the three-time Voyager Media Player of the Year. He was drafted in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. “I am heartbroken over the whole thing and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Westmont community. We are a tight bunch,” said Westmont coach D.J. Cocks. “We are mourning right now. It has been tough for everybody. “It was a rough day at school. He had already graduated and you could still see the effect he had on the kids. It was amazing to me just the kind of human being he was. I spent a lot of time with him and got to know him a lot being his physical education teacher and baseball coach for four years and I just can’t believe this happened.” On the field, Donovan is the career Westmont leader in 24 categories, including runs scored (172), hits (181), batting average (.479), extra base hits (81), assists (325) and team wins (88). Cocks said the team wins record was the Donovan was most proud of. “What he did for the team was something that I just never could have comprehended,” Cocks said. “I knew he was a good player when he came in, but I never knew what we would do. What he did his junior year when we finished third in state is legendary. He carried us with the bat, his defense and with his arm to shut the door as a pitcher. You don’t get players that can dominate all three phases like that. We were really blessed to have Charlie in the program and

Charlie Donovan, the Voyager Media three-time Player of the Year, died last week. to currently have Joe.” Joe Donovan is a junior at Westmont and played with Charlie last season. Joe joined nearly 50 current and former players at Westmont’s baseball field Friday for a memorial held at shortstop. “Joe wanted to just be with the guys and just play catch and just

be with them,” Cocks said. “He never will get over this but from our perspective all we can do is to help him through it. It will be a struggle daily. There is nothing we can say or do to make the situation better, but we can just help him move on with his life in a way that will honor Charlie and I know Joe will do that.”

LEWIS

Volleyball falls in five sets to Truman State Women’s cross country team headed to the NCAA Division II championship No. 18 Lewis women’s volleyball dropped a road Great Lake Valley Conference match to Truman State on Saturday (Nov. 7) evening 3-2 (15-25, 28-26, 25-22, 16-25, 15-10). Junior Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) recorded 42 digs. It is a new rally scoring era record for the Flyers. Her mark tops Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) who twice recorded 38 digs in a match in 2012. Lewis’ 127 digs are the most in a match since Lewis recorded 132 against Indianapolis on Nov. 16, 2007 in the NCAA Tournament. Worth noting, in 2007 matches were played to 30 points in a set, not 25. The Flyers’ best chance to take control of the match came in the second set. After Lewis dominated the opening frame, Lewis took a 2319 lead in the second set. Truman scored the next five points, three by kills and two by aces. Lewis tied the score at 24 thanks to a kill by sophomore Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn). It was the first of three set points the Flyers denied, but on the fourth Truman State won the set 28-26. Truman led the majority of the third set. Lewis rallied to within one at 20-19, but never tied it. The fourth set was all Lewis, winning by nine points. In the fifth, Lewis’ final lead came at 6-5. A 7-2 Truman State run, which started with the set tied at seven, was the difference. Lewis’ attempt to string points together was hampered by three service errors in the fifth set. Truman State didn’t have a single service error in the fifth set. Lewis held a 71-39 advantage in kills thanks to a pair of lopsided wins for Lewis in sets one and four. Lewis also committed 34 attack errors to help in the Bulldogs’ point total. “It was another match with too many errors,” Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. “We haven’t figured out how to control our side of the net and fully support one another.” Schneider led Lewis with 15 kills. Senior Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./ Lockport) and sophomore Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) each had 14 kills. Freshman Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./

Plainfield Central) added 11 kills and 20 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY For the second time in three years, the No. 14 Lewis University women’s cross country team advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships with a third-place finish at the 6K NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Southern Indiana and the Evansville Sports Corporation, at the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course on Saturday (Nov. 7) afternoon. Grand Valley State won the team title with 45 points, while Hillsdale, led by individual champion Emily Oren (20:19.48) finished second with 63 points. Lewis tied with Northern Michigan with 150 points, but was awarded third-place by virtue of the No. 6 runner tiebreakder. Lewis junior Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay) and redshirt senior Kristen Bonsor (Antioch, Ill./ Glenbrook North) both claimed AllMidwest Region accolades for the third year in a row. Farrough, who broke her own 6K school-record, was third overall with a time of 20:26.62, while Bonsor was 18th (21:32.94). Farrough’s previous school-record time in the 6K was 20:51.2, set at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships two weeks ago. Lewis junior Mollie Dalton (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) placed 34th overall with a time of 22:07.82, narrowly edging freshman Megan Shaffer (Mattoon, Ill./ Mattoon). Shaffer was 35th, crossing the finish line in 22:08.76, while redshirt senior Jamie Hershfang (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton Prep) rounded out the Flyers with a 60th-place finish of 22:32.58. Lewis senior Paige Gatter (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) clinched the tiebreaker for the Flyers with a 62nd-place time of 22:35.77, while Northern Michigan’s No. 6 runner Hannah Lonergan was 84th (23:03.81). “We ran wonderfully from top to bottom,” Lewis head women’s cross country coach James Kearney said. “I thought the biggest and most impressive runs of the day belong to Megan Shaffer (Mattoon, Ill./ Mattoon), Paige Gatter (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) and Mollie Dalton (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant). “We really stepped up at every spot today and I’m so excited to

take this team back to the big show after just missing last year,” Kearney said. “To qualify twice in three years says a a lot about how special these seniors and juniors are.” The NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships will take place at 10 AM at Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo. • The Lewis University men’s cross country team, led by freshman Jackson Waters (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central), placed 16th overall at the 10K NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Southern Indiana and the Evansville Sports Corporation, at the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course on Saturday (Nov. 7) afternoon. Grand Valley State took home

the team title with 43 points, while Lewis finished the race with 457 points. Cedarville’s Benjamin Tuttle won the individual title with a time of 30:34.27. Waters crossed the finish line in 32:54.83 to finish 69th, while redshirt

sophomore Kyle Irvin (Granger, Ind./Penn) was 84th (33:09.85). Lewis junior Zak Arcara (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) finished 91st (33:15.76) followed by a 101stplace showing of 33:24.08 from senior James Weissensel (Sandwich, Ill./Marquette Academy).

Illinois American Water launches new rapid notification system Residents can select preference for phone, text or email alerts Illinois American Water is deploying a new high-speed notification system, called “CodeRED,” to quickly alert customers when large water emergencies occur and direct door-to-door notification is not possible. CodeRED replaces the previous customer call system used by American Water. The system allows residents to be contacted via phone, text and email, depending on their personal preferences. The company implemented CodeRED to rapidly contact large numbers of customers about emergency situations when direct door-to-door notification is not possible. Emergency situations can include boil water orders, large main breaks, water conservation requirements and other major events impacting water service. The system can also be used for non-urgent notification, such as planned service outages, local hydrant flushing, lowpressure events and major traffic impacts. When CodeRED is used, customers in the affected area will be directed to the company’s website at www.illinoisamwater. com for more information. To take full advantage of the new system, customers are encouraged to log on to the company’s web self-service portal called “My H2O Online” (www.amwater.com/ myh2o) to enter their contact information and preferences by following these steps: click the Service Address link, click the My Web Account button, and Click the Change button beside the Contact Information and Alerts

section to make your selections. You can enter up to three phone/ cell numbers and three email addresses. “Our customer base is diverse, and with this new system, each customer can determine how he or she would prefer to receive emergency alerts and non-urgent notifications when door to door notification is not possible,” said Bruce Hauk, president for Illinois American Water. “The CodeRED network is also very robust,

meaning we can quickly contact hundreds, and even thousands of customers, once the notification is launched.” Customers who do not have Internet access can contact Illinois American Water’s customer service center at 800-422-2782 on Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to update their contact information. Emergency alerts will be sent by CodeRED to affected customers’ phone numbers and e-mail addresses that are on record. Customers will be sent non-urgent notifications only if they opt in to receive them. Standard text, data and phone rates may apply. The My H2O Online self-service

portal enables customers to access their account, check water usage, pay bills online, and sign up for paperless billing. Customers who are not enrolled in My H2O Online can register by visiting www.amwater.com/myh2o. After filling out the registration form and submitting it, customers will receive email confirmation from My H20 Online. Click the link provided within the email to confirm and active your registration. The new system also offers the CodeRED Mobile Alert app that communicates alerts based on location. The free app sends location-specific notifications to the user’s smartphone.
