Visitors to the veneration of St. Maria Goretti oct. 15 at St. Mary Immaculate in Plainfield stopped briefly at the saint’s glass casket to view her remains, encased inside a wax sculpture of her likeness.

Relics of Catholic saint draws faithful to area Relics will continue on tour through November By marney simon fOr the Bugle

The faces of the faithful who exited St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church Oct. 15 told a story without words. Thousands of Catholics made the trip to the Plainfield church to visit with a child who passed away more than a century ago, paying their condolences but also seeking grace and peace. The church was one of the stops on the Pilgrimage of Mercy, a national tour of the major relics of St. Maria Goretti. “I think it’s just a way to reflect, just having a modern saint present reconnects people with the church,” said Pat Sullivan, a member of the Knight of Columbus Assembly 3232 in Plainfield. “It reestablishes their connection with the church. It’s a very emotional bond, a lot of tears.” The Knights provided the honor guard during the veneration for St. Maria Goretti, an all-day event to honor her life. For Catholics, the veneration was a chance to reaffirm their faith. “Folks from all over the Midwest are coming just to pray with and

honor the life and the remains of this saint,” said Ryan Essington, youth outreach coordinator at St. Mary Immaculate. The relics are on tour for the first time in the U.S. and include the bodily remains of St. Maria Goretti, encased in a wax sculpture of her body that lies inside a glass casket. Killed in 1902 at the age of 11, St. Maria Goretti is the youngest saint in the Catholic Church. Those attending the veneration were there to acknowledge her devotion to God and her ability to forgive in the worst circumstance. Born into poverty in Italy, Maria was murdered by her neighbor, Alessandro Serenelli, after she fought off his attempt to assault her. She was brutally stabbed 14 times, and died the next day from an infection brought on by the attack. Her last words were, “I forgive Alessandro Serenelli … and I want him with me in heaven forever.” During his prison sentence, Alessandro is said to have been visited by Maria, who offered her forgiveness. Alessandro converted to a holy life. He became a lay Franciscan brother, and upon his release from prison, visited Maria’s mother, who also offered her forgiveness. Both Alessandro and Maria’s mother were present at her canonization in Rome in 1950. The Catholic church has credited Maria credited with the most known miracles by a Catholic Saint. For those who visited the parish to view her relics, it was an opportunity to strengthen their belief in God. “As Catholics, we believe in an afterlife,” Essington said. “There are people who have gone ahead of us, young and old, who have lived lives of incredible holiness. Who have lived lives of incredible service to the church here on earth. “We believe that those who have given their lives fully and completely to God have made it to heaven. So it’s just important for us, because there’s a hope. There’s a hope to life after death, and there’s a hope to heaven. The saints are the people who have paved the way for us.” The relics of St. Maria Goretti will continue on tour through November at churches throughout the country. The complete history of St. Maria Goretti can be found online at mariagoretti.com.

bumps in the night Library program helps residents understand the paranormal By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Like local “Ghosthunters,” a team of paranormal investigators listen to voices in the night, tapping into the musings of possible spirits. Members of TnT Paranormal Investigators Illinois Chapter came out to the White Oak Library District Romeoville branch, shared a virtual tour of some of the most haunted locations in Illinois and explained certain terms used in the study of paranormal activity. These were not the ghost stories told sitting around the campfire, but recorded proof of unexplainable voices heard speaking in the night. Lead investigator Carl Crooks defines the investigative team as skeptical believers, likening their work to that of the popular TBS television show, “Ghosthunters.” Crooks sets the scene retelling a story about the night a team of investigators began their research at the Tinker Swiss Cottage in Rockford, Illinois. The site, now a museum, was built in 1865, and all objects in the room are original. Crooks relates the story of Robert H. Tinkers, who suffered tragedy in his life, and died, according to legend, a cranky old man. The crew was setting up their equipment in the old cottage, with a tape recorder running.

Those interested in the paranormal came out to a presentation at the White Oak Library’s Romeoville branch. Upon playback, “Get out,” is heard in a very clear but raspy voice as TnT investigators began their investigation. In another investigation, Crooks tells of how a fellow investigator became ill and could not continue with the research. As two other investigators discuss the situation, one asking the other, “Where is she is, is she ok?,” heard on the tape, and not one of the investigators, you hear, “She’s in the car outside.” Crooks believes they the spirit was watching them and trying to interact. Another incident of a spirit trying to communicate, overhearing another conversation between investigators about their sick cat. On the tape is heard, “Take the x-ray.” It was an answer to the very question the pair was discussing. Mysterious knocks that return a similar pattern, cries of “Mommy” and “Where are you mother?” and many things that go bump in the night are recorded in red brick school houses, historic mansions and museums throughout Illinois

that the team investigates. To hear some of the recordings, check out their website at www. tntparanormal.com. Crook said TnT investigators use proven and scientific methods, techniques, processes and technologies to investigate, and first try to debunk any possible causes. All investigators first go through a background check and screening and receive training on how to conduct research. They use various tools and processes to determine if experiences are natural, possibly caused by the environment or manmade or the alternative, being of a paranormal nature. The group welcomes any information, regarding any possibly paranormal activity and will investigate free of charge. Crooks said they do not charge because that could bring out an expectation that they have to find something. “You don’t want to pay someone, so they can tell you what you want to hear—most of the time it is

Aviation museum unveils U.S. Navy fighter jet By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

After four years of restoration, a Vietnam-era attack jet was unveiled at the Illinois Aviation Museum at Bolingbrook Clow International Airport. An impressive group of veterans, local politicians and onlookers from both near and far came out Oct. 17 to celebrate the roll out of the A-4C Skyhawk. Two former veterans, Walt Brand and Robert Wideman, who flew the plane back in 1965 were among those who attended the event. Honored to present the plane to the community and celebrate

its unveiling, Museum President Larry Greenwich told of its rich history. Attack Squadron VA93, part of Air Wing 5, were nicknamed the “Blue Blazers” from 1954 through 1976. In 1965, the Skyhawk was assigned to the USS Enterprise. The Douglas A4 Skyhawk, called “scooter” by those who flew it, is a single-engine, delta wing light attack jet with a top speed of more than 600 mph. It was used by the U.S. Navy Blue Angles demonstration team, as well as the U.S. Marines and most notably in Vietnam and in the Falklands. As Greenwich told the story, the USS Enterprise came down the runway in all its glory,

brought out by Bolingbrook resident Bill Anderson, who was also on board that plane in 1965 and who currently sits on the museum’s board of directors. Mayor Roger Claar said he was proud of the museum, its efforts and of the airport, and reiterated his support of the decision by the village to purchase the airport in 2004. The airport continues to see improvements and is currently undergoing a complete rehaul of its runway – a $6.3 million project largely funded by federal and state dollars. The village will share a cost of $300,000. Greenwich also gave an update

about the museum’s offerings, which include educational tours, monthly safety seminars for existing pilots and interested pilots, ground schools to help local youth become future aviators, and AA chapter 461 Young eagle flights, which offer free flights to kids from 7-17. The museum also participates heavily in the airport’s annual Cavalcade of Planes, as well as local parades and other community events. Also highlighted during the event was the museum’s “build

a plane” project, where the community can learn about and help build a flyable aircraft, the Zenith CH 750 Cruzer. Attendees were able to “pull a rivet” and sign the log book. Build sessions are ongoing and held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first and third Saturday of the month at the museum, 130 W. Clow International Parkway. Children, families and groups are welcome to attend. For more information and to check availability, visit www. illinoisaviationmuseum.org.

Noah Linehan stands with his Eagle Scout project.

Teen earns Eagle Scout Eagle is highest rank in Boy Scouting By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Noah Linehan, 16, remembers always coming to the Bolingbrook Clow International Airport to watch the planes with his grandmother, who lived nearby, and it has become a place like no other to him. When it was time to choose a community project to earn

his Eagle Scout award and his mom prodded to complete something that was personal, it was a no brainer that he wanted to do something for the airport. A year in the planning, Linehan worked with airport officials and decided to build a viewing stand for the A-4 Skyhawk. “I just love the airport and being here,” said Linehan.

“There is just something about it that I really enjoy, and I wanted to give something back.” With the help of fellow scouts, his parents and friends, the group built the viewing stand over three weekends, having it ready for the unveiling of the USS Enterprise. The day after the roll out, Linehan received his Eagle Scout award. Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting, with only about 7 percent of all Boy Scouts earning the award.

The district plans to host several informational seminars throughout the year. The next session, ‘Embracing the Internet while ensuring family safety,’ will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at Lukancic Middle School, 725 Normantown Road. The interactive program (bring your smartphone or iPad)

for parents will be presented by Detective Rick Wistocki, speakers bureau of the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. Man gets 6 years for attempted kidnapping 22-year-old guilty of two incidents from January 2013 By bugle staff sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

A Woodridge man who attacked two girls in Bolingbrook on two separate days in 2013 was sentenced to six years in prison Oct. 14. The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office said Kareem Green, 22, was found guilty of attempted kidnapping, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and misdemeanor battery in August. As part of his sentence, which was handed down by a Will County circuit judge this week, Green also must register as a violent offender for 10 years after he is released from prison. “A dangerous man has been

taken off our streets because of two brave girls who refused to become victims, a courageous Good Samaritan who refused to look the other way and dogged police work by detectives who refused to let their community become the hunting grounds for a predator,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a release. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Green grabbed a 17-year-old girl from behind and attempted to carry her away as she was walking home from Bolingbrook High School on the afternoon of Jan. 29, 2013. A passing motorist stopped his vehicle to assist the victim and frightened off the attacker, who fled in a dark Ford Explorer. The witness, who testified at trial, provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle, but could not get a license plate number. On Jan. 31. 2013, Green followed a 16-year-old girl as she walked

Kareem Green, 22 into her girlfriend’s Bolingbrook apartment building after school. Prosecutors said he grabbed her in the hallway and attempted to cover her mouth, but she struck him with her elbow and began to scream for help. Green once again fled the scene. Bolingbrook police immediately began combing through vehicle records to identify individuals who owned dark Ford Explorers and who fit the description provided by the two victims and the passing motorist. Detectives identified Green as a potential suspect, and he was later picked out of a photo lineup by all three witnesses.

Upon an investigation, the team will come out with a DVR and a variety of equipment including several camcorders, digital voice recorders, thermometers, EMF detectors, trail cameras, data loggers, motion/shadow sensors, and other pieces of equipment that allow the capture of necessary data to determine if something paranormal is going on at the location.

Why do they do it? “Don’t you want to find the answers?’ said investigator-intraining Michael Chrzanowski. “Some people believe we are just touching on the paranormal, there is a whole world of stuff we haven’t discovered, this is just the beginning. There is a whole petri dish of paranormal.” The group will host another discussion of the paranormal at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the White Oak Library, Lockport Branch, 121 E. Eighth St.

If you are interested in a little investigating yourself, the TnT team invites you to join them Oct. 24 to learn about the historic buildings of the former F. W. Müller Carbonated Beverage Company at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, 110 W. Fremont St., Arlington Heights. The Historical Society will provide the history and members of TNT Paranormal will assist with the investigation. You may bring your own equipment or use the team s equipment. This event is geared for novice paranormal investigators that want to be able to investigate but may not have the means to do so otherwise. There are two sessions to be held from 6 to 9 pm. and 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. A registration fee of $30 is required at this event. You can register online at www. ahmuseum.org or pay $40 at the door on the day of the event. Please arrive 15 minutes earlier to do so. Pride of a Parade

Feeling pride for Romeoville during the Founders Day parade celebration ASSISTANT EDITOR

ANDREA EARNEST aearnest@buglenewspapers.com

LAURA KATAUSKAS • MARK GREGORY • IGOR STUDENKOV

In September Romeoville always has their Founders Day Parade. I walked down Dalhart and stopped in front of R.C. Hill school (was once Parkview) to personally watch our parade with gratitude and pride. I continually think about our pioneer front runners (forefathers). These people of old had strength and determination to succeed and push ahead. They persevered every day of their lives, to give us a start.

As a grateful member of the Romeoville Area Historical Society, I have the privilege to be exposed to some of the beginning of our pioneers. They survived for us residents to follow. Our book that we published in 2013 has many true tales of their family life, one room school house, etc. Another book following Hampton Park is now in process. We always appreciate any historical information that is given to us for our upcoming book. At the front of our parade, our Mayor John Noak took the lead. His family was behind him in a pick-up truck. Also, walking were our trustees. Our pioneer residents would applaud these people, because they care just as our forefathers did. They continually reach out and improve Romeoville for the good of all

of the residents. Behind our Mayor came marching bands from Romeoville and other villages. There were clowns, candy, fire trucks, police cars and much more. As an old saying goes “we have come a long way.” Progress does continue. Parades always bring out our respect for our community and the “good growth” we all enjoy. I also remember 55 years ago, John F. Kennedy, President – told Americans at his inaugural, ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country. As a Romeoville resident for 53 years, I ask myself what can I do for my village to improve and make it better as a community servant. We all need respect for our village and its residents. Because, it is the right thing to do. Shirlee J. Pergler Romeoville

“We tried to take a look into one of the burning buildings. I cannot describe what was inside. There are no words for how terrible it was. In the Intensive Care Unit six patients were burning in their beds.” So said Lajos Zoltan Jecs, a nurse at the hospital the U.S. bombed. This image is now spiraling through the Internet and across the global consciousness. The U.S. bombed a hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, killing 22 people: doctors, staff, patients (including three children). The hospital was not “collateral damage”; it was deliberately targeted, deliberately destroyed, in multiple bombing runs that lasted at least half an hour. Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), which operated the hospital, contacted its sources in the U.S. government immediately, pleading for the attack to stop - to no avail. The bombing continued until the hospital, with more than 180 occupants, was destroyed. And we’re left with the aftermath of a mass murderer spree, except the killer isn’t dead or hogtied and shoved into a police wagon. The killer gives a press conference. Oh same old, same old! The killer offers condolences, promises to investigate itself. “If errors were committed, we will acknowledge them,” said Gen. John Campbell, commander of American forces in

Afghanistan. The killer, as usual, flees from any real responsibility. But this time, maybe . . . maybe . . . something is different. The organization that ran the demolished hospital, as Glenn Greenwald has pointed out, is a Westernbased international humanitarian association with media credibility and powerful support outside the Third World. It’s not like we’ve simply bombed another wedding party or killed a few more women and children in an outlying village. On this occasion, those who have suffered also have a global voice. Jecs’ words cry out from the MSF website: “It was crazy,” he said. “We had to organize a mass casualty plan in the office, seeing which doctors were alive and available to help. We did an urgent surgery for one of our doctors. Unfortunately he died there on the office table. We did our best, but it wasn’t enough.” And the world, or a sizable piece of it, can put itself inside the burning, deliberately bombed hospital. And the U.S. is accused of committing a war crime. I’ve been pondering those words ever since they entered the conversation: pondering their moral weight, their heart-stopping, accusatory coldness. My initial reaction was, well, of course it’s a war crime. Indeed, the two words, “war” and “crime,” ought to be inextricably linked. It’s impossible to wage war - especially the way a superpower wages war, with so many weapons

of mass destruction at the ready without violating conventional moral strictures, without killing civilians in mind-numbing numbers, with virtually every action. So why is this different? Bombing a hospital, especially with deliberate intent - apparently at the behest of the Afghan government, which, reportedly, hated the hospital for treating the injured regardless what side they’re on - is depraved and utterly reckless. Not only did the U.S. kill patients and staff members from all over the world, who were working there because of a commitment to give help to those in harm’s way, but it destroyed one of the few medical centers in a city with a population of over 300,000. All of this clearly makes the act a crime by any moral standard, but in point of fact, we’ve been doing this for so long and causing so much horrific damage - in the long term as well as the short term, considering, for instance, the environmental consequences wrought by the use of depleted uranium missiles and bombs - that one more act of carnage, 22 more murdered civilians, hardly seems more “criminal” than all that happened throughout the Middle East before the Oct. 3 bombing.

Area trio lifts flyers Area talent helps Romeoville school stay atop conference

The Lewis University women’s volleyball team has had a good deal of success this year at 211, 9-0 in the GLVC and has been doing so with multiple locals on the team, including three from the Voyager Media coverage area. One is senior Alexis Davito, a Crest Hill native and Lockport graduate, who is in her fifth year with the team. “Being the only fifth-year senior is weird but it is kind of nice,” Davito said. “Having a lot of freshmen and new blood on the court and the chemistry and nice. I think we have a good chance to do some good things.” After years of looking up to seniors, she is now that leader. She hopes she can have the positive impact on others that those before her have had on her. “I’m trying,” Davito said of being a leader. “Our team is

unique and everyone tries to take their own leadership. I think the program has really helped me grow so I just want everyone else to do the same.” Davito has been able to play in front of friends and family over the years and she would have it no other way. “The parent base is amazing so we always have fans,” Davito said. “So being local is great because we always feel like we’re home. We’re never far away. My brother goes here as well, so the whole family is here. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. I always have someone here supporting me.” While Davito has had a good amount of success while on campus at Lewis, there is one more thing she would like to accomplish before her career is done after the season. “Making it to the Sweet 16 would be great,” Davito said. “Since I’ve been here, we haven’t made it out of first round of regionals and it is about time we

Basketball Fan Fest slated for Oct. 22 Men’s, women’s soccer teams fall to Drury The Lewis University Athletics Department and Student Wellness Advocate Group (SWAG) will unveil the 2015-16 editions of the Flyer men’s and women’s basketball teams at the Fourth Annual Flyer Fan Fest on Thursday, October 22 at Neil Carey Arena. “The Flyer Fan Fest is one of our signature athletic events on campus,” Lewis Associate Director of Athletics Brian Sisson said. “We look forward to a jam-packed Neil Carey Arena and showcasing our basketball programs who will provide a great experience to the Lewis University community.” The event is slated to begin at 9 PM with free pizza and soft drinks being served at 8:45 PM. Flyer Fan Fest will feature slam dunk and three-point contests, along with performances from the cheerleading and Flyerette dance teams. “Flyer Fan Fest is an event that our guys look forward to,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “It is a great time for our team to interact with the student body, which plays an important role in creating an exciting atmosphere in Neil Carey Arena. “It should be a fun evening and it is a great way to tip off the beginning of an exciting 2015-16 season.” First-year head women’s basketball coach Kristen Gillespie

echoes Trost’s sentiments. “I am extremely excited for the Flyer Fan Fest,” Gillespie said. “Our players have been working extremely hard during the preseason and cannot wait to get on the court. “It will be a great opportunity for our fans to interact and get to know our players.” Fans have a chance to interact with our basketball teams with the Flyer Skill Challenge and have a chance to win $500 that would go towards books for the spring semester. There will also be a contest between Student Organizations, with the winning team taking home $100 for their group.

SOCCER Lewis men’s soccer fell 3-0 at Drury on Sunday (Oct. 18) afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Harrison Stadium. Drury opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a tally by Julien Chevy. The Panthers’ Matt Clarkin scored at 22:38 to make it 2-0. The goal was assisted by Ben Bruce. Drury added a third goal in the 40th minute by David Cross on a header from Antonie Vial. It stayed 3-0 the rest of the way. “Confidence comes into play when they put an early goal in,”

Lewis head coach Evan Fiffles said. “We need to make better decisions in game scenarios. There is no magic wand and no secrets to success. We’ll keep working to continue to get better until the final whistle blows.” Lewis freshman Aaron Menyes (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) played the final half for Lewis in goal, making one save for a scoreless 45 minutes. Lewis falls to 1-12-1 (1-10-1 GLVC). Drury improves to 7-5-2 (7-3-2 GLVC). A game earlier, Missouri S&T junior Eduardo Abichabki and sophomore Felipe Andrade each recorded a goal and an assist, as the host Miners earned the 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Lewis University men’s soccer team at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field on Friday (Oct. 16) night. “S&T took advantage of their opportunities tonight and they were able to finish,” Fiffles said. With the victory, Missouri S&T improves to 8-6 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while the Flyers fall to 1-11-1 on the campaign and 1-9-1 in GLVC action. Abichabki and Ryan Lawhead assisted on the Miners’ first score, as Andrade beat Lewis senior goalkeeper Justin Salazar (Elburn, Ill./Hinckley Big Rock) from 25 yards out at the 28:16 mark. It was Abichabki’s turn in the 64th minute, as he scored from the top of the box to extend Missouri S&T’s advantage to 2-0. Missouri S&T goalkeeper Nick

Posey made two saves to earn the shutout for the Miners, while Salazar stopped two shots for the Flyers. The Miners outshot Lewis, 1310, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Lewis returns home on Friday (Oct. 23) to face Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m. If you can’t make it to Romeoville the game will be streamed on GLVCSN. •Three late goals helped lift the Drury Panthers to a 4-0 decision over the Lewis women’s soccer team on Sunday (Oct. 18) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest. Drury took a 1-0 lead to halftime after a goal in the 41st minute. Mariah Gove scored on a penalty kick. “I think we got off to a pretty good start,” Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. “Drury had two really good chances in the first half, and one ended in the penalty kick. To give up a PK in the final five minutes was a tough way to end the first half. In the final second half Drury just out executed us. They were sharper on the ball than we were and they made better decisions than we did.” It stayed 1-0 until Drury scored three quick goals in the final 20 minutes of the game. Grove scored in the 72nd and 79th minute while teammate Emily Cline scored in the 78th minute. “Late in the game we moved to three in the back to throw numbers up front and they caught us,” Koenig said. “At that point we had to do something to get back in the game instead of riding it out.” Senior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) led Lewis with three shots. Drury improves to 7-3-4 (6-3-3 GLVC). Lewis falls to 8-5-2 (6-4-2 GLVC). . In their previous game, Lewis wasted little time on taking control of their Great Lakes

Valley Conference match at Missouri S&T thanks to a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes. Lewis would hold on for a 3-1 win over the Lady Miners. “We went into the game trying to get a quick start and it was good for us to accomplish that,” Koenig said. “It was a little disappointing we couldn’t put the game away in the first half but credit S&T as they worked really hard to put us under pressure in the second half.” Lewis out-shot Missouri S&T 15-11 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior Julie Gunnerson (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) got the Flyers on the board in the seventh minute. She headed in a deflected shot for a goal. It was her first score of the year. Sophomore Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) earned an assist on the play. Junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) scored at 19:26. She jumped on a loose ball near the front of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Missouri S&T made it a game thanks to a tally by Andrea Aller three minutes into the second half. Lewis finally put the game away in the 88th minute when sophomore Elena Cukurs (Arlington Heights, Ill./Mount Prospect) redirected a cross from senior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) into the goal. I t was Cukurs’ third goal of the season. “I don’t think we lost our way after S&T got that goal and that’s a positive with this group that they just keep plugging away,” Koenig said. “Anytime you can get a 3-1 win on the road in the conference, I will take that and move onto the next match.” The Flyers return to action on Friday (Oct. 23) in a 5 p.m. start with Rockhurst at Lewis Stadium

Shorthanded Spartans fall to Plainfield East Romeoville missing several key players with injuries as the season wraps up By Scott Taylor sports editor

staylor@enterprisepublications.com @Taylor_Sports

Playing severely shorthanded, Romeoville fought hard, but came up short at Plainfield East, falling 47-19 Friday at East. The Spartans (1-7, 1-5) didn’t have key players on both sides of the ball due to injury and had injuries during the game as well. “It is more an issue with health with us right now,” first-year Romeoville coach Oliver Gibson said. “We’re down to about 25 guys. We had a player come play with a separated shoulder. We were missing our inside linebacker, wide receivers and safeties. We’re still trying to come out with victories, but we’re just trying to get out of games healthy.” Despite having many players go both ways, Romeoville didn’t give up and hung tough until the end. “We don’t quit and we won’t quit,” Gibson said. “It is just a matter of getting healthy. We have the skill players. We have Jordan (Nettles) and Tyree (Allen) coming back next year. I wish I had this group for another year. We just have to solidify our line and those guys are coming back. I wish I had our seniors again because this is a good group. We just started late and got injuries.” The Bengals came firing out of the gates as Matt Mazurkiewicz found Dylan Koch on a 35-yard touchdown pass with 10:22 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. Just over three minutes later Mazurkiewicz hit Jalen Hutt for a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 12-0 advantage. However, Romeoville battled back as Nettles scored from 14 yards out to cut the deficit to 12-7 with 3:41 left in the first quarter. That wouldn’t be all the scoring though in the first quarter as East’s DJ Donofrio ran 38 year yards for a 19-7 lead late in the quarter. The lead was built to 21-7 on a safety in the second quarter and 25 seconds later it was 28-7 as Troy Mayon plunged in the end zone from a yard out. In the third quarter, the Bengals made it 34-7 when Donofrio scored from 13 yards out and it was 41-7 shortly later on a 5-yard run from Huff.

The Spartans tallied a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns as Allen ran from 36 yards out and Nettles caught a screen pass from Anthony Kitchens and ran 73 yards for a touchdown. East closed the scoring on a 14yard pass from Matt Pratscher to Tremaine Hoover. Mazurkiewicz finished 13-of-19 for 165 yards. Jeremy Reitz ran 13 times for 139 yards and Donofrio had 10 carries for 101 yards. Kitchens passed for 185 yards for the Spartans. Nettles had four catches for 110 yards and Allen had four carries for 61 yards and three catches for 72 yards. Next up for the Spartans is a home game against Oswego East (5-3) to close the year. “It’s senior night, they will be ready to play,” Gibson said. “I want to stay competitive after the first quarter. We can play with anybody if we can make it out of the first quarter. That is our goal.” Gibson is looking forward to a full offseason to get the program stronger. “Our offseason is going to be strong and if you aren’t playing another sport, we are going to need full participation. We were thin when we started.” • Bolingbrook is in a must-win situation heading into the final week of the season. The Raiders must defeat Homewood-Flossmoor, the consensus No.1 team in the state to advance to the playoffs after a 33-16 loss to Lockport, in a SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue tilt. Bolingbrook was plagued by seven turnovers in the game.

I think we just need to want it and play that way.” For the season Davito leads the team with 227 kills and a .332 hitting percentage, along with 37 aces, also a team high. With Davito finishing up her career, the future of the Flyers’ offense may be Plainfield freshman Elizabeth Hyland. Hyland has come out of the

T h ursday, October 22, 2015 | bug lenew spapers.com gates fast, starting as a freshman, playing all six rotations. She has 225 kills, 16 aces, 242 digs and 34 blocks. “I’ve had so much support from not only the coaches but the entire team,” Hyland said. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without all my teammates on the sidelines.” Even though she has started from the beginning, there have

been adjustments. “It is a really fast pace,” Hyland said. “And just learning how Lewis does everything. But the girls have been really helping me and make the transition a lot easier.” Hyland proved the hard work does pay off. “I worked my butt off and if it happened, it happened,” she said. “My goal was obviously to start, but I was going to be happy wherever I was put and needed.” A big thrill for the freshman is playing in front of her home crowd at Lewis. “It’s awesome, I love it,” Hyland said. “I love looking up and seeing familiar faces in the crowd. I don’t think I could go to a place far away where my family wouldn’t be able to go. It is great to have them up there cheering me on.” Going forward, Hyland knows there are areas where she can

improve on. “I think I just need to relax and play my game,” Hyland said. “I can over-think things. I want my serve-receive and my hitting spots to improve.” Davito feels she doesn’t need to do much mentoring with Hyland. “She is actually my little sister on the team,” Davito said of Hyland. “I think she is incredible. I don’t need to do much leading with her. She kind of takes it upon herself to do it herself. She does a great job of not only watching girls in front of her but establishing herself.” Moving to the back row, junior defensive specialist Carolyn Nojiri of Downers Grove has been happy with the season so far. For the year she has 48 digs. “It’s been good,” Nojiri said. “To have two freshmen setters, it has been really good to see how they have meshed with the hitters.”

While she has seen some action this volleyball season, Nojiri is most known for being a two-sport collegiate athlete, as she is also a softball player and had the second highest average on the team last year. But, playing two sports doesn’t come easy. “It has its ups and downs,” Nojiri said. “I haven’t been to a lot of softball stuff lately because it has been hectic with volleyball. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is the best of both worlds to play both of the sports I love.” Playing two sports does make things harder in the fall though as she misses the fall softball season. “It does because I am missing the fall season of softball because I’m in season for volleyball,” Nojiri said. “But I work my butt off in the offseason for the upcoming season, so I don’t feel I am behind, actually.”

After being introduced to one of your programs at work, I realized how irresponsible I had been and went home to apologize and tell my wife about it. During this conversation I learned that we have about $80,000 in debt I didn’t know about, plus $45,000 in debt on a new car and motorcycle I did know about. We also have a mortgage on our home. My wife apologized for making a mess of things, but it wasn’t all her fault. She wasn’t sneaking around spending and taking out debt, she just made mistakes and was afraid to tell me. Together, we make about $100,000 a year. Can you help us? Curtis Dear Curtis, I’m really glad you’ve made the decision to man up. That’s a big step in the right direction for you and your marriage. To me, what you described is a lot different than her completely lying, hiding stuff, and actively having a financial affair — so to speak — on the side. You weren’t plugged in and she wasn’t doing a good job, but she didn’t have anyone to talk to about it. Things got worse, then she probably felt ashamed about how ugly it got and didn’t want to tell anybody. Not counting your house, you’ve got about $125,000 in debt. You’ve got to look at all this with a $100,000 income and say, “What is the fastest way to clean up this dadgum mess?” That’s going to mean beans and rice, rice and beans. That means a scorchedearth lifestyle and living on a budget, which also means you’re not going out to eat, not going on vacations, and you’re going to start selling so much stuff that the kids think they’re next. I’d probably sell the car and the motorcycle. Get into a couple of

basic cars, and spend about two years of crazy intensity getting debt free except for your home. You can clean this up that fast, but you’re going to have no life during that time. The two of you have some relationship work to do also. It sounds like you’ve already started on that with you owning your part and her owning hers. The thing is not to blame. From this point forward you need to sit down together and make all of your decisions — financial and otherwise — together.

Trust me, if you’re both willing, you can heal the math problem, the debt problem and the marriage problem all at the same time. It will be an amazing thing! —Dave Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business, and CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored five New York Times bestselling books.
