Village has spent $135,000 to treat trees against emerald ash borer

BY LAURA KATAUSKAS | STAFF REPORTER In a battle against an invasive beetle that is wreaking havoc in communities everywhere, how to handle the emerald ash borer is key.

Romeoville Public Works Director Erick Bjork estimates that the village treats 2,000 ash trees on public property and on the right-of-way and an unknown number on private property.

Trying to keep the devastation of trees at bay, the village of Romeoville has been treating its ash trees since 2012 in various areas with trunk injections of “Tree-Age” by a contractor.

Any parkway tree that has been treated by the contractor has been marked with an identifying tag number on the trunk of the tree (some trees may have multiple tags if they have been treated multiple years). see ‘TREES’ on Page 4

Romeoville is one of nine Chicago-area communities taking part in a regional economic development attraction effort to fill 10 former Dominick’s locations. The communities began meeting in December to develop the comprehensive marketing program, “One Call, 10 Stores, A Million Customers,” hoping to attract a business looking to enter the area.

Mayor John Noak said while Romeoville has been working with the landlord on the now vacant property at 135th Street and Weber Road, this campaign adds another layer of opportunity.

“This is a secondary effort that we have joined that opens opportunity on a different scale, focusing on the business that may want multiple sites to enter the Chicago market,” said Noak.

Focusing on grocery stores and retailers that are not currently in the Chicago market, the promotional effort is seeking companies that might find a package of several stores attractive, according to the village of Woodridge. The promotion was developed with input from the local brokerage community representing each community’s site.

Creative Play boasts 84 graduates Creative Play Preschool’s graduation ceremonies on May 20 were well attended by families of 84 graduates.

The village of Romeoville Parks and Recreation Department provides an early education for children ages 3 4 years old through its Creative Play Preschool program.

Creative Play Preschool provides children with the opportunity to participate in activities that develop them socially, emotionally and intellectually into a selfassured child.

“Dominick’s was an institution that had a long term presence in each of our communities,” said Jason Zawila, a planner who coordinateseconomicdevelopment efforts for the village of Woodridge.

“This certainly created a unique opportunity for our group to fill the vacant spaces left behind. We strongly believe that there is an opportunity for a business that is not currently in the Chicago market to take advantage of locating in an area with a potential base of one million customers.”

The marketing campaign culminated with the creation of a website, www.1call10stores.com,

and involves direct emailing, phone calls, and distribution of brochures at future conferences and trade shows.

“Combined we represent nearly 700,000 square feet of retail space that is strategically located for a new retailer looking to make an aggressive entry into the Chicago area market,” said Christine Jeffries, president and CEO of the Naperville Development Partnership.

The marketing materials include demographic information, property representation and community contacts in one location on the campaign’s website.

“Communities have different

regulations and processes for business openings that can be a stumbling block for a new retailer looking to enter the Chicago market,” said Vijay Gadde, economic development director for the village of Oswego. “By combining our resources in one easy to find location including regional demographics, we can conveniently offer the information needed for their site analysis.”

The nine participating communities include Bartlett, Bensenville, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Naperville, Oswego, Romeoville, Wheaton and Woodridge.

trees | from page 1 The village will be treating the parkway trees every two years, as necessary. In the first year the treatment program began, 416 trees were treated in the subdivisions of Heritage Place, Nottingham Ridge, Haley Meadows, Malibu Bay and Lakewood Estates.

In 2013, 1,262 parkway trees were treated in the subdivisions of Weslake, Fieldstone, Lakewood Falls Phases 5; 6; 7A-C, and Wesglen. These areas will receive the second round of treatment this Spring.

In 2014, 453 parkway trees were treated in the subdivisions of Marquette Estates, Marquette Landings, Poplar Ridge, Meadowdale Estates, Misty Ridge, Greenhaven, Marquette Crossing East, Marquette Crossing West, and Taylor and Airport roads.

The village has not historically kept records of the types of trees removed, so overall it is unknown if many ash trees were removed previously. Bjork said as the program continues this year, the village will obtain additional data on the success of the treatments.

Though there has been success with treatment, Mayor John Noak knows that it may be a process of delaying the inevitable. However, he said it is a move the village is willing to make.

“The reality is it is just a matter of time before the trees are infested but we are taking a multifaceted approach eliminating the possibility of removing all of them at one time,” said Noak. “Treating them gives us the ability to replant those that have to be removed over time. Treatment has proven to at least prolong the life of the tree.”

The village of Bolingbrook has at least 30,000 emerald ash trees on public property alone and will end up spending millions to treat and remove infected trees.

A fraction of that cost is being spent in Romeoville. To date, the total amount expended on treatments is approximately $135,000.

“So far the treatment has been manageable, though it does put a strain on our resources,” said Bjork.

Noak said the problem also lies in the fact that the problem has hit everyone and inventory for trees is actually hard to come by and with demand comes a price, making it more expensive.

“We are able to take a gradual approach and are somewhat lucky because we just do not have as many ash trees as some other communities,” said Noak.

The village will remove any dead trees that may cause a dangerous situation. The village does not treat or remove trees on private

property. If the owner suspects that their ash tree might be infested with EAB, they are asked to contact an arborist. Homer Tree Service will charge residents $28 per inch to remove trees on private property.

In 2015, tree removal work is being performed at several forest preserves throughout Will County as well including along the Centennial Trail in Romeoville.

Additional sites throughout Will County may also be included as infested ash trees are identified throughout the year.

Some trails will need to be closed to public access during the removal process and possibly some preserve access areas as well. Updates on the progress of the work and any impacts to preserve users will be posted on the forest preserve website as they become available. Work is planned through December 31, 2015.

An invasive beetle, the EAB feeds on the inner bark of ash trees, effectively preventing the tree from transporting water. The

beetle often is difficult to detect, especially in newly infested trees.

Signs of infestation include the presence of metallic-green beetles about half the diameter of a penny on or around ash trees, thinning and yellowing leaves, D-shaped holes in the bark of the trunk or branches and basal shoots.

The Illinois Arborists Association reports if a tree has lost more than 50 percent of its canopy, it is probably too late to be saved.

Romeoville also has adopted a parkway tree replacement program, which is cost-sharing program between residential home owners and the village.

The program is intended to assist residents who wish to have trees planted in the parkway in front of their homes where trees do not currently exist or are in poor condition.

The village will pay 50 percent up to a maximum of $75 per tree.

The public is becoming more skeptical and starting to question both prices and drug company marketing practices. “A year ago there was little discussion,” says John Rother, who heads a group called the National Coalition on Health Care.

“Today that is 100 percent reversed,” and the group’s Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing may be catching on. “But I think we’re still a long way from agreement about what to do,” he said.

Increasingly all consumers will bear the costs of high-priced medicines through higher deductibles and more cost-sharing.

Sovaldi and similar drugs added $4.5 billion to Medicare spending last year, more than 15 times what Medicare paid for older hepatitis C drugs the year before. Only as Medicare beneficiaries and everyone else with prescription drug coverage feels the pinch, will there be any serious chance that people’s voices will be loud enough to effect any changes. That will happen, as Express Scripts pointed out, when the prices become unsustainable.

Atchley Park Party kicks off summer special events More than 400 residents attended free family event

The village of Romeoville Parks and Recreation Department hosted the first of three free park parties on May 19 at Atchley Park (614 Murphy Drive).

The community enjoyed the cooler temperature with sunny skies and a variety of Star Warsthemed activities for the entire family. Following Atchley Park, the Village is hosting two more free park parties — Lakewood Estates at 620 Michigan Drive (June 16) and Wesglen Park at 120 S. Wesglen Parkway (July 28).

Activities at this StarWars-themed event included a DJ, a sandy candy treat, a light saber craft, a moon jump, and a hotdog dinner. The event was sponsored by the village of Romeoville, DuPage Township Supervisor Bill Mayer and the Hampton Park Social Athletic Club.

areas, the department will be providing many free events for families this summer including summer Movies in the Park and Park Parties, the Rockin’ the Ville concert series, and the four-day Romeofest. Local woman to compete in Miss USA State Pageant Pageant will take place Sept. 4 in Skokie Romeoville resident Rachel Mytnik has been selected to participate as a State Finalist in the 2016 Miss Illinois USA Pageant.

The pageant will take place Sept.

4 in Skokie. She will be competing as Miss Romeoville, and will compete in swimsuit, evening gown and personal interview competitions. The winner will go on to represent Illinois in the 2016 Miss USA Pageant. Miss USA

goes on to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant.

Mytnik began the Culinary Arts program at Joliet Junior College at 16 and graduated May 15 with an Associate in Applied Science degree at just 19. She has a lifelong dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer, and has been pursuing this dream since she was 3. She also is a ballet instructor, and loves to share her passion for dance with her students. She loves the arts, and has also taken voice lessons, and frequents a local stable for horseback riding lessons.

The Miss USA Pageant system

stresses good morals, physical fitness, social awareness, and community involvement. The pageant provides contestants opportunities to build selfconfidence and communication skills, and scholarships are offered to every pageant participant.

Contestants are also encouraged to become involved in the pageant’s official charity, Warriors for Ross, which raises funds to fight childhood cancer.

CHARLESTON – Last year Cierra Pulliam put herself on the track scene with a third-place showing in the triple jump at the state meet.

This year, she topped that performance.

The Romeoville senior finished in second place Saturday at Eastern Illinois University with a distance of 39-feet, 7.75-inches.

“I think I did put on a good show and I’m excited with how I did,” Pulliam said. “I moved up another place from last year, so that was really exciting. I’m a little upset I didn’t make my goal, but I’m still excited.”

Her experience last year helped her out this year.

“I knew what was going to be happening and I knew the entire setup,” Pulliam said. “I knew what I had to do and how everything was going to be. Being a two-time medalist means a lot

to me. The opportunity was great for me.”

Next up for Pulliam is college, where she will be staying in town at Lewis University. “I’m really excited to go to the college level now,” Pulliam said. “My goal is still to get 42 feet. It is nice to stay close to home.

The 4x200 meter relay of Pulliam and freshmen Idara Anyang, Jahnetta Jones and Kaniyah Rush set had a PR and finished third in their heat, but the time of 1:43.28 wasn’t quite enough to make finals.

“We had a good PR,” Anyang said. “We really got the technique that the coaches gave to us. What we learned all season went into this race. Our handoffs were perfect. We did everything really well. It was exciting hearing the noise and the cheering. It is nice to have the support.”

“I’m really happy,” Jones said.

“We all did what we were looking to do. I’m so proud of everyone.

Romeoville resident and Lewis senior Rebecca Priesler was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Midwest Region Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

Romeoville’s Preisler places 2nd in outdoor pole vault The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Friday (May 15) that Lewis University senior Rebecca Preisler (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) has been named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Midwest Region Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

“I am so happy for Rebecca to receive this honor,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “She truly is one of the best athletes in the country and this will mean a lot to her, her family and our program.”

Preisler, the 2015 NCAA

Division II Indoor Pole Vault Champion, has not let up as she owns the nation’s top outdoor pole vault at 4.20m (13’9 1/4”).

She cleared that NCAA Automatic Qualifying height to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pole Vault championship. That mark is also a GLVC meet and Lewis record.

Preisler narrowly missed in her bid to win her second national championship of the season, finishing second overall in the pole vault to put the No. 15 Flyers in eighth-place following first day action at the NCAA Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by

Grand Valley State, on May 21.

Preisler finished second to Central Missouri’s Brittany Kallenberger to earn All-America honors.

Both student-athletes cleared 4.00m (13’1 1/2”), but the Central Missouri sophomore was able to do it in just one vault, while Preisler needed two.

“Rebecca had a little bit of a rough day, but it was exciting watching her last attempt knowing if she made it, she would win,” Schwarting said.

“We are so proud of her and she will inspire the rest of the team this weekend.”

There were six discus throwers who qualified for this weekend’s Class 3A state meet out of last Friday’s Downers South sectional, but Romeoville senior Kelvin Jones was hands down the best of the lot.

Jones uncorked a school-record throw of 169 feet, 7 inches—nine feet better than his nearest competitors—to win the sectional crown and punch his ticket to Charleston for a second straight year.

Jones will be joined in the event at state by junior teammate Voctor Osinloye, whose toss of 157-9 exceeded the state qualifying distance of 156-6. Meanwhile, senior 800-meter runner Luis Loza placed second to secure a state berth.

The Spartans finished eighth out of 16 teams with 26 points.

Bolingbrook won its first sectional team championship since 2007, edging out Lockport, 96-88. Individually, junior Jaylan McConico nabbed sectional titles in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, senior Damare Portis captured the long jump crown, and the Raiders went 1-2 in the high jump with junior Justin Rivers and sophomore Zyon Bell both clearing 6 feet, 3 inches.

Bolingbrook cruised to victory in both the 4x100- and 4x200meter relays, and qualified its 4x400 relay squad, as well.

When the individual who was running the discus competition called out the order of the finalists last Friday, he referred to Kelvin Jones as Kevin Jones.

But Jones took the faux pas in stride.

“It happens every single meet, so I’m just used to it now,” he said.

It’s safe to say the discus field at state this weekend will get Jones’ name right if he either equals or surpasses his sectional distance.

Jones heads into state with the fourth-best throw among all the sectional qualifiers.

“I think I’m throwing pretty good, better than last year,” said Jones, who quarterbacked the Spartans’ football team his junior year and was a running back last fall. “I think I’m hitting my peak. I want to at least get on the podium and place this year and do better than I did last year.”

Besides placing as high as possible at state, Loza wants very much to set a new school record in the 800. The time he needs to beat is 1:55.84.

“It feels amazing to get our goal,” Bolingbrook junior Charlyncia Stennis said. “It is incredible. Our handoffs were really good.”

The veteran unit overcame adversity of the years to win the title, making everything pay off in the end.

“This makes it all worth it,” senior Asha Wallace said. “This is such a blessing. We worked so hard to get to this point. This was my main goal. I always have to watch from the back, so I was just hoping for the best.”

“It feels good,” senior Alexis Brooks said. “This feels like home. It feels good to redeem ourselves. I just knew I had to get a good block start and catch the girls ahead of me in lanes eight and nine. It feels good to end senior year like this.”

Steve Dear Steve, I wouldn’t worry too much about that if I were you. The only exception to that might be if you had loans that you owed to that same bank.

Then, I would probably move my emergency fund out of there just in case something went wrong with the loans.

Some commercial loan documents now give the bank the right to take money out of your

account to pay the loan — without your permission. If you had a car loan, for instance, with that particular bank, I wouldn’t keep a bunch of money in that bank. They normally don’t do that unless you’re way behind on the bill — and then it gets pretty adversarial.

Sometimes there can be things like a simple clerical error, and there’s no chance of that happening if the money’s in another bank. But in your situation, I don’t see any harm in you being there.
