Police department names K-9 officer John Allen 2014 Officer of the Year BY LAURA KATAUSKAS | STAFF REPORTER ith a love for the community and a desire to serve it well, veteran officer John allen was chosen as the Romeoville police department’s officer of the year for 2014. an officer for 19 years, allen came to Romeoville in July 2000 and quickly rose through several ranks, including patrol officer, traffic officer, evidence technician and an investigator with the Metropolitan area Narcotics Squad. “officer allen approaches his job duties with a friendly, positive and helpful attitude,” police chief Mark turvey said. “officer allen is a professional and effective police officer, a skilled k-9 handler, an advocate for those in need, and a role model for the youth of the community. officer allen is truly an asset to the Romeoville police department and the village of Romeoville.” allen has performed the duties of the department’s lone k-9 officer since 2012. it was with his partner, Spike, who he says he couldn’t do his job without, that allen helped arrest one of Romeoville’s most heinous criminals last year. see ‘TOP COP’ on Page 4

Residents who would like to observe their documents being shredded must park in allotted spaces. Items accepted include personal documents such as old check stubs, bank statements, old files, IRS tax forms and other miscellaneous paper documents. Documents will be shredded on site by ProShred Inc. Only personal documents

will be accepted; no business documents. Residents will be allowed to bring a maximum of three file boxes and must be in line before 1 p.m. Do not bring newspaper, school assignments, metal items, corrosives, hazardous waste, food waste, or wet documents. top cop | from page 1 In February 2014, Allen was one of numerous officers who responded to the shooting of a teenage girl and her mother in the 300 block of Emery. Approximately one hour after the shooting, Allen, along with Spike, entered the backyard of a home to investigate blood on the its front porch. Spike immediately began barking upon entering the backyard, and Allen quickly noticed a subject hiding under the back deck. The subject was taken into custody with the assistance of other officers, and it was later determined that the suspect, 24-year-old Erick Maya, was the teenage girl’s exboyfriend. He was subsequently convicted for murder. “Throughout his nearly 15-year career, officer Allen has performed his duties with enthusiasm,

professionalism and a true desire to serve the citizens of the community,” Turvey said. “Officer Allen is well known throughout the village due to his involvement and commitment to the community. Officer Allen has received even greater recognition since he was appointed the Department’s K-9 handler in May 2012.” Allen jokes that he is known throughout what has now become his hometown, where family members say only he could be out in a restaurant or grocery store and shake the hands of those he arrested for minor offenses. “I believe it is important to treat everyone with respect, and I don’t talk down to anyone,” Allen said. “There is a certain way you should do your job.” It is that attitude Allen carries with him throughout not only his

work on the job but in volunteer efforts as well, leading the charge for such projects like Shop with a Cop at Christmas time for disadvantage children, Softball in the Snow for the Make a Wish Foundation, Camp Quality for kids suffering from cancer, Bowling for Big Brother and Big Sisters, and Cop on Top for the Special Olympics. Helping the community is one of the reasons he became an officer. It was actually by accident that Allen pursued the career he now says he enjoys more than he ever realized. His sister-in-law opted to pursue an application in law enforcement, which she later decided against. Allen discovered the application on the kitchen counter, which led to a life-long career. “I’ve done a lot of things, but what I love most is helping people and volunteer work,” Allen said. “It just elates me to know that knowing something you’ve done can spark positivity in the community.” After joining the Romeoville force, he decided to move from Chicago to the village in 2007. “I went from not even knowing where Romeoville was to getting so much joy from such a small town,” he said. “This community just embraces you and it is something special to see how everyone treats you and each other.”

Allen’s accomplishments were abundant in 2014, Turvey explained, further outlining the number of cases Allen had a hand in solving. In April, Allen, in a response to a complaint about a vehicle parked in the driveway of a vacant home in the 600 block of Romeo Road, he and Spike inspected the property and discovered a cannabis grow operation that resulted in the discovery of 57 cannabis plants and other drug related items, with a $7.3 million street value. In May, Allen and other officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had driven into a retention pond at 1400 Bluff Road. Upon arrival, the officers discovered that a man was possibly inside the submerged vehicle. Allen and another officer went into the pond and attempted to save the subject. Despite their valiant efforts, the subject did not survive. In August, Allen and numerous other officers responded to the 300 block of Tallman in reference to a large fight involving baseball bats. One of the victims in the altercation died as a result of the injuries he sustained. Allen played a critical role in this investigation, finding the weapons and locating the suspects involved. In September, Allen arrived on the scene of a traffic stop of a

suspected drug dealer when Spike indicated presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed more than $10,500 in cash and written ledgers of drug transactions. The evidence obtained from the vehicle resulted in a search warrant for a residence where an additional $1,179 in drug money was located along with 21 grams of cocaine, a handgun and drug paraphernalia. Two felony arrests were also generated by this investigation. “These examples of excellent police work are only part of the reason officer Allen has been named Officer of the Year,” said Turvey. “Not only has Spike played a significant role in many of Officer Allen’s arrests, Officer Allen and Spike have done an outstanding job promoting community relations throughout the village. “Officer Allen is tireless in his pursuit of improving Spike abilities and is constantly researching training opportunities for himself and Spike to enhance their skills.” For Allen, Spike is the “most amazing partner.” “I can’t believe I came to love him as much as I do,” said Allen. “He is a pet when we are at home, but when we got to work, we have a job to do.” Apparently, they are getting the job done right.

As a volunteer tutor for many years, I feel a need to share some of my personal teachings. This past year, I had two young boys, second-grader “Ali” and third-grader “Donovan” who helped and respected each other at all of our sessions. I continually learn from all children. They always “tell it as it is.” Their total honesty is amazing. I am grateful and humble for the time I have shared with them. Ali and his family of six are from Pakistan and are devout with their prayers and religion. Ali and his family went back to Pakistan for six weeks around the holidays. Their attitude and

kindness for everyone is outstanding. Respect is always shown to everyone. At Thanksgiving, I asked Ali if they had a turkey dinner and a family thanks. The reply I received was, “We give thanks everyday – not only at Thanksgiving.” Donovan is a young AfricanAmerican boy. We discussed his ancestors and slavery, and he is very proud of his past and has a thirst for learning that is evident each time I tutor him. Donovan understands the sense of his identity comes through knowledge. He is a proud example of our future. Ali and Donovan have no cultural or color differences. They show me that

everyone is equal. All people matter, past or present. Ignorance is gone. Education has always been the answer. Ali and Donovan have “no code of silence.” My hope is that all people will have no boundaries with cultural or color differences. These “kids” teach me and others that communities of families do care and help each other. They illustrate transparency and disclosure by emulating their children. For a few years, the Romeoville 800-meter relay was an area force, advancing to state each year leading up to an all-state showing in 2012. Last year the relay came up short, ending the run, but this year they are headed back to state with a new look. Cierra Pulliam is back from the 2013 squad that made it to state, but, rather than her being with all seniors, she is now the senior with all freshmen. “It was something different,” Pulliam said. “Sophomore year I made it to state with all seniors and now my senior year I’m going with all freshmen. I just tell them to keep pushing whether you are last or first. I see us placing at state.” “I’m really counting on Cece to help us out,” leadoff runner Idara Anyang said. “Being a freshman, walking in and experiencing it myself, it is going to be different and I think I can take it.” The Spartans ran the relay in 1:45.52, just beating the qualifying mark May 14 at the Downers Grove North Sectional. “We worked hard throughout the whole season,” Jahnetta Jones said. “What you put in is what you get out. I was a little worried, but we put in the work.” “It was really exciting,” anchor Kaniyah Rush said. “I felt the pressure at the end. It feels good to make the time. I knew I would be

pretty close to making it to state, but I didn’t think we would make it.” “It felt amazing, especially coming off the track,” Anyang said. “The weather worried me and I thought I was going to mess up. I actually did really well and it makes me feel confident knowing that I can handle anything.” Coming into the season, it was hard to imagine three freshmen making it to state in an event, but Romeoville was able to accomplish that. “It is pretty cool,” Jones said. “I think it was hard to imagine making it to state as a freshman, but it is so exciting. We want to do the same thing, three times harder.” Meanwhile, Pulliam is also headed to state in the triple jump (38-0.5, 1st) and 200 (25.84, 3rd). “It is great,” Pulliam said. “My goal was to make it to state in the 200. I’m very excited and very happy that I did everything I did.” After coming in third last year in the state in the triple jump, Pulliam is hoping to bring home the state title this year. “I want to hit 42 feet,” she said. “I’m just ready to get my goal. My speed and staying consistent will be keys. I want to bring home a state title.” •Last year Bolingbrook was well represented at the state finals on the final day, but finished no better than sixth in an event. This year it is looking to improve on that.

None are higher than the 400-meter relay, which had the state’s top time entering sectional competition. Seniors Alexis Brooks, Asha Wallace and Jessica Watkins teamed with junior Charlyncia Stennis to win the sectional title with a time of 48.54. “It is always a good run for us because we work well as a team,” Wallace said. “No matter what happens, we know how to adjust.” The same four were together much of last year, but a late injury to Brooks slowed their progress a bit. With them all healthy heading into state this year, they have their sights set on a state title. “We really have picked up right where we left off,” Wallace said. “We only had to make minor adjustments with the order, but everything else was fine. Hopefully we will win a state championship. We’re motivated with all the injuries that have gotten us the past couple years. We have to hold up for one more week and we should be fine.” “We’re excited,” Watkins said. “As long as we get our handoffs down, we will be good. I think we have it this year. We’re trying to take the title this year.” “I’m so proud of us,” Stennis said. “We’re all friends. We have our handoffs basically down. We’re like a unit. We are coming for everybody this year. Behind the Rayos del Sol brothers, Romeoville had its best showing in the Southwest Prairie Conference. The Spartans finished in fourth place with 16.5 points. Plainfield Central won with 22.5 points. I’m proud of my team. We did really good. It feels great,” Miguel Rayos delo Sol said. Miguel and his brother, Martin, took home singles titles. Miguel won at No. 1 singles, defeating Central’s DJ Colantone after losing the first set. “I was more dedicated,” Miguel said of his comeback. “I couldn’t let my team down. I wanted it really bad. I focused more and tried to play more consistent and patient.” It was the fourth time the two have played each other and this time the stakes were the highest.

It feels great to be a conference champ. I’m proud of myself.” Last year Miguel placed third at No. 1 singles. He credits his serving ability for the jump to first in his junior year. “My serve has been a big difference,” Miguel said. “It is really helping me out. It is a big part of my game.” Now Miguel will look to repeat his state berth from a year ago at the Joliet Township Sectional this weekend. “Next week is going to be really tough,” Miguel said. “All the players are back, so it is going to be a grind for me. It is going to be a lot harder. I just need to play my game. I just want to get to state.” Meanwhile, Martin won the No. 2 singles title in dominant fashion, not losing a set along the way.

Hopefully I can keep it up.” Martin, a freshman, started the season playing first doubles, but the move to singles paid off. “I was playing first doubles, and it wasn’t going very good,” Martin said. “Coach gave me a choice and I chose to play second singles. It worked out well. Singles is faster pace and I like it better.” Martin is now trying to do something his bother didn’t do – make state as a freshman. “I want to make it to state,” Martin said. “I have to play the way I always do, which is aggressive.” Although Miguel consistently beats his brother, the two’s competition with one another should continue to benefit both of them, especially Martin. “I hit with him all the time now,” Miguel said. “He is getting better every meet. Hopefully he gets even

better next year and hopefully we can play some doubles together.” “It isn’t much competition,” Martin said. “He beats me all the time. It makes me want to get better and it motivates me.” The No. 2 doubles team of Brandon Kavaliunas and Cole Brooker finished in third place, while Will Caron and Kyle Listermann took fourth at No. 4 doubles.

Do you do a lot of posting? i don’t post things that often. My social media life isn’t all that exciting. i post for gymnastics; we have our own (Niles West gymnastics) page so i’m able to communicate with everyone on the team at once and it helps out.

I’m peaking at the right time.” Stennis placed seventh last year in the 400 and is looking to improve on that this weekend at the state meet Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. “I want to finish in the top five. I want to hit 56 seconds flat,” Stennis said. “I have next week all planned out and I know what I am going to eat. I have to get my mindset ready for state. My experience should help me out. I’m definitely prepared for it now.” Mikayla Houston also advanced to state for Bolingbrook after finishing second in the shot put with a distance of 38-feet, 9-inches.
