Police department names K-9 officer John Allen 2014 Officer of the Year BY LAURA KATAUSKAS | STAFF REPORTER ith a love for the community and a desire to serve it well, veteran officer John allen was chosen as the Romeoville police department’s officer of the year for 2014. an officer for 19 years, allen came to Romeoville in July 2000 and quickly rose through several ranks, including patrol officer, traffic officer, evidence technician and an investigator with the Metropolitan area Narcotics Squad. “officer allen approaches his job duties with a friendly, positive and helpful attitude,” police chief Mark turvey said. “officer allen is a professional and effective police officer, a skilled k-9 handler, an advocate for those in need, and a role model for the youth of the community. officer allen is truly an asset to the Romeoville police department and the village of Romeoville.” allen has performed the duties of the department’s lone k-9 officer since 2012. it was with his partner, Spike, who he says he couldn’t do his job without, that allen helped arrest one of Romeoville’s most heinous criminals last year. see ‘TOP COP’ on Page 4
