BY LAURA KATAUSKAS | StaFF reporter espite a prominent location at weber Road and 135th street, the site of a former Dominick’s grocery store remains empty. safeway, the parent company of Dominick’s, shuttered all of the grocery retailer’s locations in the chicago market in December 2013. shortly thereafter, many of the stores, such as those in nearby Downers grove and shorewood, were bought by other grocery chains, including Mariano’s and caputo’s. however, the Romeoville location still sits vacant with no sign of a new lease. news surfaced suggesting that alberston’s, the parent company of Jewel-osco, would pick up the store, located in the Romeoville town center.

But Mayor John noak said there are no plans for a new store in the works. “we know there is interest in the site, and we have made it well known that we are more than willing to work with a company to get a store in there,” he said. “But, the lease is controlled by Jewel and is out of our hands.” see

Area literacy program expands pop culture experience By laura katauskas staff reporter

With a tribute to decades of iconic music and all things “pop culture,” area groups celebrated the 2015 Great Read community literacy initiative last week at Bolingbrook’s Fountaindale Public Library.

From a trivia contest pitting Star Wars against Star Trek to book discussions on “Sex, Drugs and Coco Puffs,” the increasingly popular reading program promoted literacy throughout Will County by demonstrating how these themes can interact with all types of media.

“It’s like putting cheese on broccoli, “said the event’s organizer Tom Hernandez. “The big picture is all about reading and celebrating the love of literature.

It’s still all about teaching people about the power of reading, but the programs help enhance all it has to offer.”

This year’s theme was all about having fun, opening the program to capture not only the lit lover but fans of graphic novels, as well.

Through his music and comedy, the entertainer highlighted key moments in pop culture over the decades.

The program also featured its annual art contest, which is open to all ages. This year, more than 35 entries were submitted.

Fountaindale Public Library patron Erika Tucker won the adult category.

Madelea Perales of Plainfield East High School took home the teen award and Michael Kazak, a second-grader at River View Elementary School, won the top prize for the elementary age category.

The instructions for the contest were simple, explained

Hernandez. Contestants were allowed to use any medium of their choice to create an original piece of pop art. Each winner received a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble.

The Great Read began in September 2004 as Reading Across Plainfield. Hernandez, who is the director of community relations for Plainfield School District 202, said that first program featured a panel hosted by the District 202 and the Plainfield Public Library to discuss the theme of government censorship illustrated in Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.”

When Bolingbrook and Joliet public libraries joined the program in 2008, Reading Across Plainfield became The Great Read. The expanded program could now encourage broader community participation, better reflect the area and emphasize the program’s literary focus.

In pursuit of opening the eyes of even more book lovers, the group grew over the years to include 11 area libraries and community organizations.

Participating organizations now include the Fountaindale Public Library, Lemont Public Library, Plainfield School District 202, Plainfield Public Library, Joliet Public Library, ShorewoodTroy Public Library, Troy School District 30c, Joliet Junior College, the White Oak Library District,

Supermanny brings community together

A

lmost 600 participants came out to the second annual Heroes Vs. Villains Supermanny Shuffle 5k and Superkids Miler on May 3, running through the streets of Romeoville.

With more than 80 volunteers and hundreds of onlookers, the community came out in full force to support 3-year-old Manny Bueno.

His family organized the event last year with the help of the Community Service Council in their mission to fight Cerebral Palsy with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Participants were encouraged to dress as their as their favorite super hero or super villain, while they shuffled through the streets of Romeoville to show off the pride and support for people of all abilities.

Designed to continue a student’s learning momentum through the summer months, Valley View School District 365U’s is offering a unique all-day Summer Learning Experience.

Registration has begun for educational summer programs for children who will be in kindergarten through fifth grade next fall. The program will mimic a regular school day, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30

p.m. from June 11 to July 23 at a cost that amounts to $16 a day for any child who lives within the VVSD attendance boundaries and $20 a day for any child who lives outside of the VVSD district.

All students are welcome regardless of the town in which they live or the school they attend.

Officials explain the Summer Learning Experience day will focus on key reading comprehension and writing skills as well as handson common core math instruction during the morning, and fun,

engaging enrichment activities such as hands-on science, Readers Theatre, book talks and plenty of leisure motor skills time during the afternoon.

As an added bonus, all Summer Learning Experience participants will receive a free breakfast before their day begins and a free lunch as well.

Before-and-after-school care programs will be provided by the Bolingbrook Park District and the

Mary Ellen and Breanna concluded each presentation showing what life is like to be diagnosed with a disability.

Their presentations were well received from students and professors alike.

“Mrs. Bogucki was an excellent presenter who was easily able to convey the frustrations, as well as the excitement, of figuring out how to help Breanna develop to her highest potential,” said Mary Jensen, professor of special education at Western Illinois University. “Meeting Bree was just a delight for all of us!”

Some of us with special needs have the opportunity to share our talents to a global audience.

For Breanna, she will perform this July as a vocalist on a global stage at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. For myself, as the host of the Special Chronicles podcast, I reach over 25,000 listeners in over 85 countries.

The stories of those of us with special needs are the best way for incoming special education teachers to learn how they can help us succeed.

“Who better to advocate for people with disabilities than those with disabilities,” said Garrett Anderson, another of my friends with Down syndrome and fellow athlete leader in Special Olympics Illinois.

TOP SEED The Flyers are No. 1 in the NCAA Tournament field this weekend

When two of the top teams in the nation get together, while the outcome is unknown, it is sure to be an exciting show.

That was the case Friday night when the No. 1 Lewis men’s volleyball team hosted No. 4 Loyola in the 2015 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Championship.

The Flyers dominated the first game, but the Ramblers came back to win the next three, claiming the 16-25, 25-15, 29-27, 25-20 win.

The win gives the Ramblers an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, while Lewis earned an at-large berth and the top seed in the upcoming 2015 NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship, hosted

by Stanford University, from May 5-9.

The Flyers (25-3) advance directly to the semifinals and will meet the winner of play-in match between Hawaii (21-6) and Penn State (20-9) May 7.

“It is a tough loss, it will sting for a little bit, but we have to refocus and get ready for the national tournament,” said Lewis coach Dan Friend.

Lewis won the first set behind an 11-4 run to end it. Senior Greg Petty, a Downers Grove North graduate, recorded the final kill.

In the second set, Loyola tallied six of the final seven points to win by 10 and tie the match 1-1.

The third set was the gamechanger.

The pivotal set featured nine ties and saw Lewis have leads of 13-10 and 21-19. The Flyers were the first to set point at 25-24. It was the first of three set points Loyola turned away without the Flyers ever swinging for the point kills. A controversial touch call swung the momentum to Loyola, who took advantage of it for the win.

Loyola carried that momentum of the comeback victory into the fourth set, grabbing leads of 7-3 and 14-8.

The Flyers did made a run, making it a four-point game at 1915 on a kill by senior Eric Fitterer, but that was thwarted by Loyola, who claimed the match win.

“If you don’t take advantage of opportunities when you have them, those things can happen.

Whether it was a good call or bad call is indifferent. Ultimately, you have to take advantage of opportunities when you have the situation and if you don’t, you leave it up to someone else to make it for you,” Friend said.

“Loyola is a great team. We came out pretty good in the first game, but they bounced back in the second. That third game was huge.

Hats off to them, they played great tonight and we just fell a little short. We have to refocus.

Everyone is 0-0 now and that is how we have to go about it. We will learn from the game tonight and use that against whoever we play next. This will make us more hungry.”

Petty totaled 12 kills and four blocks and an ace, while Lewis setter Scott Fifer posted 50 assists.

Romeoville freshman Paige Rydberg, a three-time U.S. figure skating national qualifier, is supporting Team Khaim Perez, a kindergarten student at Robert C. Hill on May 17 at Solider Field in the Move for the Kids 5K. Rydberg, a former Robert C. Hill student, is supporting Khaim, who has been diagnosed with minimal change disease, a form of kidney disease. During the 2015 Great Read, local libraries and organizations funded and held various programs and events that focused on the pop-culture theme: From shortlived fads to the lasting evolution of music, entertainment and sports.

“The level of enthusiasm is amazing,” Hernandez said. “All partner libraries have been embracing this theme, and patrons have been coming up to support all these events.”

Bob and Donna Locknar of Shorewood came out to see Griparis, but were surprised to find all the nuances of pop culture

influence, including Tupperware sets and Elvis posters.

And, that is essentially what The Great Read is all about, according to White Oak Library Director Scott Pointon. He said libraries everywhere try to give patrons a reason to participate in programs that lead to further discussion and research. Each library promoted books and materials, as well, with book displays and reading lists.

The combined effort of the groups involved far surpassed what a single organization would have been able to offer, the program’s organizers explained.

Funding, in part, is made possible by the Plainfield Foundation for Excellence, and Friends of the Plainfield Public Library.

“We know there is interest in the site, and we have made it well known that we are more than willing to work with a company to get a store in there,” he said. “But, the lease is controlled by Jewel and is out of our hands.”

The former site of the Dominick’s gas station, which was located on the corner of the property, was razed earlier this year.

Noak said there was interest in that site, as well.

The developer of the retail center, The Shiner Group, could not be reached for comment.

Development booms elsewhere Despite this lack of development, Noak said progress is continuing at other sites throughout town, with preleasing agreements wrapping up for the Uptown Square at Route 53 and Normantown Road.

“Every center in town is now again in private hands and is working on leasing,” said Noak.

Plans continue for the development of a new restaurant and grocery/deli that will be home to Fat Ricky’s Restaurant and Franconi’s Grocery, which will be located at the southwest corner of Route 53 and Phelps in front of the
