Lukancic receives American flag flown in combat mission School officials will decide when to present, display flag

It all began in September when Lukancic students wrote letters that were included in care packages sent

by Operation Support Our Troops to soldiers deployed overseas.

“We did this as a part of our Patriot Day lessons, but many of us have continued to write letters throughout the year,” said Patty King, Lukancic social studies key leader. “The teachers at Lukancic want to instill in our students a sense of patriotism, appreciation for our heroes in the military and civic awareness/duty of our country and the world.”

grader Leslie Perez and wrote back to the school. In response, King (who was sending an Easter care package to her son Timothy, who is serving in the U.S. Army) also put a care package together for the Campbells.

The Lukancic Drama Club and volleyball team both donated t-shirts that were include in the care package.

Earlier this month, King received the flag and a letter stating, “Thank

you so much for the care package you sent. We thought the shirts and goodies were great. It is so nice to hear about schools that still discuss appreciation for the military in the classroom. With that being said, we instantly knew we wanted to have a U.S. flag flown in honor of John J. Lukancic Middle School.”

Lukancic officials are in the process of figuring out how and when to formally present and display the flag.

State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is sponsoring legislation that would prohibit Illinois from double taxing income that is earned in another state when the taxpayer’s home office is based in Illinois.

“Right now Illinois residents are taxed on most income

received in other states, rather than just income earned in Illinois,” said Manley. “This wouldn’t be an issue if the other states didn’t also tax those wages, but they do. Our working families are being hit hard enough with the many different taxes that are imposed upon them, and the last thing we should be doing is taxing them twice on the same income.”

Manley introduced House Bill 675, to prevent the double taxation of certain income for Illinois residents. Under current law, if an Illinois resident earns income from another state then that person is required to pay taxes in both states under certain circumstances.

The legislation would instead only tax the wages earned in Illinois based on the number

of work days the employee is performing services in Illinois.

Out-of-state earnings would be excluded from Illinois income taxes.

“We are the only state that implements this double taxation, and it hurts our taxpayers,” Manley said. “Even though this doesn’t apply to a majority of taxpayers, as a CPA I am appalled that the current law is designed to take advantage of the few that are affected. This legislation is designed to rectify the law and allow parity within our tax code and other states. It is a necessary step, and I look forward to working with all stakeholders involved to resolve it.”

No one wants to be hit by the flu, and that includes our furry friends.

While reports of canine influenza have been rampant in Chicago, the Will County area is seeing signs of the potentially devastating virus hitting closer to the suburbs.

The Animal Clinic of Romeoville has seen at least three to four suspected cases each week and has been inundated with phone calls in regards to what canine flu really means.

Veterinarian Mikel Pulins urges pet owners to spot the signs of a potential flu—coughing, sneezing, loss of appetite, warm to the touch—and to bring their dog in for a checkup.

There have been more than 1,100 confirmed dog flu cases reported from greater Chicagoland and at least six fatalities have been reported. At least 300 additional cases have been confirmed from Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Will County Animal Control administrator Lee Schild D.V.M. said precautions are necessary to help area dog owners protect their pets.

“This is a significant outbreak caused by a virus of Asian lineage,” Schild said. “Dog flu is common in the U.S., but this is a strain we haven’t seen before. Until the outbreak shows signs of subsiding, it would be prudent to avoid dog parks and keep dogs separated as much as possible.”

Schild said dogs are much less likely to acquire a virus if they avoid contact with other dogs, adding that dog owners may also consider postponing grooming their pet.

Pulin agrees. The vet said the best defense is to keep dogs away from other animals at this time, avoiding dog parks or boarding the animal.

He said puppies and older dogs who are unable to fight off a virus are most susceptible.

There is a vaccine available for the H3N8 dog flu virus, which has been circulating throughout portions of North America since 2004. However, there is no vaccine formulated specifically to combat the new H3N2 strain. Experts are unsure if the H3N8 vaccine will offer any protection against the H3N2 virus.

Pulin said he has seen cases with dogs having very high fevers of 104 degrees and a deep kennel cough but not showing signs of vomiting and diarrhea. He advises a treatment of fluids and antibiotics given at the clinic.

Experts believe the Chicagoland outbreak is caused by a virus closely related to Asian strains of the H3N2 virus currently widespread in southern China and South Korea. Cases began surfacing in Chicago during January and have been increasing rapidly since the Easter holiday, according to Will County Animal Control.

At least four suspect dog flu cases have been reported in the county, but additional testing ruled out the H3N2 virus strain.

At least two of the four suspected local cases were linked to dog care facilities.

There is a vaccine available for the H3N8 dog flu virus, which has been circulating throughout portions of North America since 2004. However, there is no vaccine formulated specifically to combat the new H3N2 strain. Experts are unsure if the H3N8 vaccine will offer any protection against the H3N2 virus.

There is no evidence linking the virus to human transmission, but a person who has been in contact with a dog carrying the virus may inadvertently spread it to another dog. Frequent hand washing will reduce the potential for disease transmission.

Pulins said he recommends flu shots for those animals that are at high-risk of exposure, such as being in a boarding situation or at a vulnerable age, and also warns that there is now a huge demand for the vaccine and thus a limited supply.

When in doubt, he said, call the animal clinic at 815-886-0404.

Going above and beyond to make a difference Local volunteer has donated more than 4,000 hours to area hospital By laura katauskas staff reporter

Not looking for attention or a pat on the back, Sid Cudebec merely wants to make someone’s day a little brighter.

With more than 4,000 service hours at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Cudebec was bound to make someone smile. In fact, his selflessness is one of the reason’s ABH recently awarded Cudebec with its Service Excellence Award.

“Sid goes above and beyond to make things rights and has made a huge impact in our volunteer program here and he is considered part of the hospital team,” said Danielle Muhlenbeck, program manager for service excellence and volunteer services.

But Cudebec shrugs off the compliments, and explains he just wants to do something positive

“I just think it’s important to greet everyone with a hello and how may I help you. Maybe I grab them a wheelchair or escort them down the hall—it’s hard enough to be in the hospital, I am just glad to help out a little.” Volunteer Sid Cudebec with his time and give back to Bolingbrook and the community he has lived in since 1974.

“I love dealing with people, and if I can help in some small way, why not,” he said.

He has been volunteering at the hospital since it opened in 2008 and before then at the Tall Grass Corporate Center.

“You can hear the kindness in his voice. He does everything with all his heart and its shows,” said Muhlenbeck.

He has volunteered in many areas ofthehospital,includingHospitality Desk as an Escort, Health PASS, Marketing, Foundation, Infection Control, Mail Room, Emergency Department Front Desk, Medical Surgical Units and New Employee/ Volunteer Orientation. He is also

EDITORIAL

New city hall building draws attention There have been many comments about our new Village Hall for some time. It is with much thought and care that I write.

Some say our Village Hall is pretentious. They call it the “Taj Mahal.” The architects and leaders of this building had a transparent foresight of our growth for the future.

With our growth, this outstanding and grandiose building can become a home for all of the Romeoville residents.

Our first Village Hall was a chicken coop. Our second Village Hall was built on 135th Street, from 1895 to 1960, between New Avenue and the I & M Canal. Our third Village Hall was on Montrose near our Memorial Park. As the saying goes “we have come a long way.”

It is appropriate that we support our leaders, who had the courage to display

their allegiance and direction that this building illustrates.

I am proud to call our new Village Hall “home”. Ignorance is gone. We are all sensitive to our growth. We are proud of our historic past, and the residents who paved the way.

Our new Village Hall is a beacon and a legacy with a firm foundation that we leave our next generation with pride and dignity.

In 2014, he placed first in his age group at the Hancock Hustle downtown Chicago, climbing 94 floors to the top of the John Hancock Building in 20 minutes and 14 seconds.

Aside from climbing mountains, he considers himself blessed in many ways with a wonderful wife, Laura of 41 years, two children and three grandchildren, early retirement and good health.

He has developed many close relationships with team members over the years and considers ABH his “home away from home.”

In addition to volunteering at ABH, he also volunteers at his church as an usher, greeter and other church functions, as well

It is not often that a varsity coach in any sport is relieved to have a freshman starting in a key position on the field.

That, however, was the case for Romeoville soccer coach Phil Wicyk when it came to his ninth-grade goal keeper Macayla Dwyer.

Sure, Dwyer is young, but she is also talented and a natural goalie.

“It is great. It was a sight for sore eyes coming from not having raw talent in the goal and someone who had experience in goal,” Wicyk said. “It takes a lot out of coaching when we can focus more on offense and defense and not worry as much about goal tending. Not to say

we don’t work on it, she just has the talent.”

Wicyk said while Dwyer’s talent is what first caught his eye, it is her attitude that makes her a good fit on the varsity level.

“She stepped up right away,” he said. “I told her it is a competitive conference and she was going to see a lot of shots. She said she wanted to do it and that was great to hear that kind of confidence from a freshman. What really stands out is her confidence level. She stepped right in and was ready to go, which is rare to find from a freshman on the varsity level.”

“I have been playing since the fourth grade, so I was kind of expected it to happen, but it was a rush of excitement that I did make it and now I get to play and show who I am,” she said.

While she is performing well on varsity, she and her coach knows there will be mistakes as she learns the varsity game.

“Her best quality right now is her willingness to learn,” Wicyk said. “She is going to learn from this and get better and if she continues to get better, she will be one of the better goal keepers in the conference and she will make a difference.”

Not only does Dwyer know she will make mistakes, she knows they are a way to improve.

“It is great because I am learning. I am not scared of my mistakes,” she said. “I know that I will learn from them and get better and make less mistakes.”

She has already learned some things she needs to do to improve.

“I have to be more aggressive,” Dwyer said. “I have to get out of the box more and I have to know that some of those girls are huge and I have to take them out, so I have to lean that.”

Aside from playing the games, Dwyer said she has just enjoyed the camaraderie on the team and how the welcomed her.

“It has been really fun,” she said. “It was so much fun making new friends and meeting new people. Right when I came in, they welcomed me. There was no standing in the corner, I went right in with

them.”

VOLLEYBALL Romeoville defeated Plainfield South 25-27, 25-19, 25-23.

The Spartans were led by junior James LeFaiver who posted 29 assists, two aces and three kills.

Senior Mike Kurzynski tallied 10 kills and four aces, while junior Gio Dekire added nine kills and junior Kyle Pociask had eight kills.

Romeoville beat Oswego 7-1 behind a solid pitching performance from Audrey Sizemore.

She tossed a complete game, posting 15 strikeouts.

Softball blanks Missouri S&T twice in series sweep The Lewis University softball team used a potent hitting attack and dominant pitching to earn the 7-0, 4-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader

sweep over Missouri S&T at the Lewis Softball Field on Sunday (April 26) afternoon.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 23-20 overall and

13-13 in GLVC action, while the visiting Miners fall to 9-28 on the campaign and 6-22 in conference play.

In the opener, Lewis

sophomore Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) topped the Flyers offensively, as she went 4-for-4 with a RBI, including her team-best seventh home

run of the season. The Flyers also received two hits and a RBI from sophomore third baseman Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and senior second baseman Frankie Rys (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist).

Rys also scored twice while junior catcher Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) went 2-for-2 and scored a run.

Freshman center fielder Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) drove in two runs for the Flyers.

Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was dominant in the circle, as she earned the complete-game, three-hit shutout. Bowler (1412) struck out six batters while her counterpart Becca Strope (5-7) took the loss for the Miners. Strope allowed six runs - four earned - and 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work, while fanning two.

The Flyers used the long ball to their advantage in the nightcap, as both junior second baseman Frankie Castagna (Chicago, Ill./ De La Salle) and Nojiri both went deep. Castagna connected for a three-run blast in the first inning, while Nojiri had a solo blast in the third. Jaworski also went 2-for-3 and scored a run in the game two win.

Lewis sophomore pitcher Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./ St. Bede Academy) picked up the complete-game, three-hit victory for the Flyers. Schweickert (9-8) struck out eight batters in the win. Missouri S&T starting pitcher Kati Viets (4-16) took the loss, allowing four runs and five hits in six innings pitched with four strikeouts.

BASEBALL Freshman Ryan Fox (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) extended his scoreless streak to 17.0 innings as he helped Lewis split a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s on Sunday (April 26) afternoon.

New leader, same plan for Raiders ‘Brook soccer to keep building program under new coach

After spending years getting the Bolingbrook girls soccer team to be a viable program, coach Martin Uscilla stepped aside after last year to spend more time with his family.

He left the program with talented players and the reigns were handed over to Matt Kocourek, a longtime assistant on the guys side under Jamie Clemmons, who also assists on the girls team.

“It is nice having Jamie here because I have worked with him for nine years and we just flip roles,” Kocourek said. “We know each other well and he has helped me take over and knowing some of the girls and their habits. A lot of them are here during the summer and they cheer on the boys, so it is like a family.

Kocourek said it is beneficial having a senior led team to bride the transition.

“It is nice to have them to streamline the take over and a lot of them know me,” he said.

“It is good. We have a great group of girls, we have nine seniors, so we are senior loaded. We have 22 girls on the team and everyone is playing strong and showing up to practice and making strides.

“The program was left in good standing. They had one of their most successful years last year.

I have worked with Martin in the past and we share some philosophies and that makes it a smoother transition.”

Kocourek may not be familiar with all the opposing players, but he sure knows the team names

from the guys side and knows there are no easy games.

“This is a strong soccer conference and we are in a strong soccer area with the Napervilles and we see them in the playoffs,” he said.

Unfortunately, one of the seniors that Kocourek was looking to count on is lost for the season.

“We lost our top striker, Caroline Harvey, to a torn ACL. It is unfortunate,” he said. “She had seven goals already when she went out.”

The Raiders have been looking to others to step up.

“Erika Rivillas is a junior and we thought she would help at right mid, but we have needed her at striker and she has done a nice job at two spots,” Kocourek said. “Abbie Lund has four goals and three assists as a sophomore, Gabriela Flamenco is a senior and she is really holding it down in back and Tyler Holmes is a junior defenseman doing a nice job.

Cecelia Bach is a senior helping us at right mid.”

To go with the seniors, Bolingbrook has a couple freshmen helping the cause.

“We have two freshmen, Rachel Perez, who is a key contributer and our startering goal keeper Julia Lentz,” Kocourek said.

Having a freshman keeper may mean some young mistakes now, but he knows it means an anchor for three more years.

“We are trying to get her time out there now, see what she can do and get her the experience,” Kocourek said. “She has a good feel for the game and plays like a veteran in most situations, it is just a matter of getting her more time and more experience.”

Saint Joseph’s made three first inning runs stand up. Freshman Dalton Hottle (Monmouth, Ill./ Monmouth-Roseville) allowed four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.

His record is now 1-3 after the loss. The Lewis bullpen threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing just a hit and no runs.

Lewis’ only run came in the sixth. Junior Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) tripled to start the inning and came around on a

Indianapolis entered the day in second, but rallied to win the GLVC Championship (912) by 14 strokes.

The field consisted of 14 teams and 70 players.

The Flyers now await word if they will receive a bid to the NCAA East Regional. Lewis was ranked sixth in the last NCAA regional rankings released on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL No. 1 Lewis men’s volleyball out-hit Grand Canyon .355 to -.040 on Saturday (April 25) evening as the Flyers defeated the Antelopes 3-0 (25-15, 25-

15, 25-16) in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Quarterfinals.

The win moves Lewis to the MIVA Semifinals.

The Flyers will host No. 5 seed Lindenwood on Tuesday (April 28) evening at Neil Carey Arena.

First serve is set for 7 p.m.

The eighth seeded Antelopes had 22 kills to 25 errors.

That total was due in large part to Lewis’ blocking defense. The top seeded Flyers out-blocked the Antelopes 11.5 to 2.0.

Senior Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) recorded eight kills, five aces and four block assists to total 15 points.

Lewis held a 10-3 edge in aces.

Junior Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) totaled 28 assists as five different Flyers notched four or more kills.

Junior middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) had six kills on six swings while adding five blocks.

New SWSC rules to help Raiders grow program

For the last few years, the Bolingbrook boys tennis team has been working on building its program up to be competitive in both the strong SouthWest Suburban Conference as well as the tough area, however, it has been difficult for the Raiders to fill its roster with players with varsity experience.

This season is a different story.

Not only does Bolingbrook have enough players to fill out its lineup, a switch in conference strategy is helping the Raiders build.

“We are at full squads this year at both varsity and junior varsity and that is big,” said Bolingbrook coach Chris Mallon. “This is the first year in our conference that we have a junior varsity instead of the freshman/sophomore team and that has helped because we do have a handful of juniors that are out this year

that have never played before and this way we can get them to develop instead of having to play varsity tennis. We are seeing a lot of growth through camps and through younger players coming out.”

Mallon is hoping one or more of those players contribute to varsity next season.

“Some of them are very athletic and they are picking it up very quickly, but not quick enough to be varsity right away. But, with a year down, anything can happen.”

Mallon said just a few years ago, Bolingbrook had a junior come out for the first time and was the team MVP his senior season.

While the Raiders wait for the new juniors to progress, they got off to a good start this season, taking a 3-1-1 record into league play.

Mallon said, now they just have to maintain consistency as the tough part of the schedule approaches.

“We have to continue to run our drills in practice

and continue to keep them motivated while we hit that long stretch of games all in a row and now we will have Saturdays, so we have to keep our health in stride for the day to day grind in the middle of the season,” he said.

Bolingbrook also has a new adventure in store for them at the end of the season, as it will have new competition to open the state series.

“We are in a different sectional this year, we are in the Plainfield Sectional this year,” Mallon said. “We have been in the Joliet Sectional with the Joliet schools and Lemont.”

Bolingbrook is in the Plainfield North Sectional with all four Plainfield schools, both Oswego schools, Yorkville and Neuqua Valley.

The Raiders have already defeated Plainfield South 5-2 and beat Plainfield East 4-3 this season.

“This year we will see some fresh faces and you never know,” Mallon said.

Windows 10 gets back to basics, and more Microsoft looks to make good for Windows 8 debacle

Many of my loyal readers have questioned me about the upcoming release of Windows 10, the replacement for the somewhat-deservedly John Becker maligned Windows 8.

As you may recall, my initial take on the early beta versions of Windows 8 were full of positives… until Microsoft

removed the traditional desktop screen and all the menus.

I then lambasted Microsoft along with, well, pretty much everyone who tried to use Windows 8 on a desktop or laptop computer. The free update to Windows 8.1 fixed many sins, but by then it was too late.

In the interest of doing some research, I decided to get a preview copy of Windows 10 and see if Microsoft had redeemed itself. If you are not interested in Windows 10, I’ll give you the short take: Windows 10 will be worth the effort. Microsoft has restored the desktop and menus.

Happy news: The desktop is

fully restored. More happy news: The good ‘ol menus are back.

Even better news: The old menus have been improved and now make more sense.

Upon first glance, Windows 10 looks like Windows 8, but the comfort of the familiar desktop screen caused great rejoicing.

The Start Menu is back in place with a twist: It shows the menus for traditional software but also shows an expanded box with the newer “Apps” menus. This gives you the option to do either if you are on a traditional old-school desktop or laptop computer with a mouse and keyboard, which is kind of like having your cake and eating it too.

If you have a mobile device, or a touch-screen enabled computer,

you will get a different look. The touch-based start screen will appear instead of the desktop.

This little bit of magic is based in code that detects the type of computer you are using and adjusts the initial screen to match.

Nice touch. Ha ha, get it?

Under the Start Menu, you will see a much-improved organization of options. For example, in prior versions the Control Panel, Printers, and Devices were somewhat separated. To me, these are all related and should be under one menu. Windows 7 and 8 sort of fixed it, but still had the old “Control Panel” concept.

Windows 10 fixes this.

Everything related to making changes to the computer is grouped under a single “Settings” menu. The submenus under that are logically grouped as well: “Printers”, “Devices”, “Personalizations” etc. Finally, there is one place to go to make changes.

There are many more improvements, but too early to detail those yet. Windows 10 is slated to be released sometime in August, so we will have to wait till then.
