Girls honor various cultures from around the globe

Nearly 300 girl scouts from Service Unit 736 of Bolingbrook and Romeoville took a tour around the world without leaving the village.

Each year on or around February 22, Girl Scouts nationwide participate in activities and projects with global themes. World Thinking Day gives the scouts a chance to honor their sister Girl Scouts/ Guides by celebrating international friendships and remembering that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community—one of nearly 150 countries that are members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) WAGGS. At the Bolingbrook High School, individual troops represented 20 different countries, providing food, displays about its culture and the ways of girl scouts across the globe.

In addition, Girl Scouts performed various presentations of games, songs and dance of cultures from around the world.

Peterson pleads not guilty to murder for hire charges Charged with soliciting murder of Will County State’s Attorney Randolph County State’s Attorney Jeremy R. Walker and Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced Tuesday that defendant Drew Peterson waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered a plea of not guilty in the state’s case charging him with one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder.

Peterson, 61, an inmate at the Menard Correctional Center, waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered the plea before Randolph County Circuit Judge Richard A. Brown.

The charges, both Class X felonies, allege that between September 2013

and December 2014, the defendant solicited an individual to carry out a murder-for-hire plot against Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

The case is being jointly prosecuted by the Randolph County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. Also today, the state filed a required notice disclosing the case involved the use of a court-ordered eavesdropping device on two occasions – from Oct. 24 to Nov. 23, 2014, and from Nov. 23 to Dec. 22, 2014.

The state also filed a motion for a discovery protective order pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 415(d) precluding the defendant, defense counsel or defense personnel, as well as the prosecution, from publicly disclosing any information provided in discovery for the duration of this case to protect the

identity and safety of Individual A. Judge Brown granted the state’s motion following an in-camera hearing. The case was set for a case management conference at 10 a.m. on April 14.

Get to know the members of the Police Department and better understand how and why officers make the decisions they do.

A different topic is taught each week including gang awareness, law (criminal/traffic), traffic stops/radar (hands on), firearm safety, K-9 procedure, and a patrol ride-a-long.

Applicants must be 18 years of age. Applications are due by Friday, March 6. The first class

begins March 24 and meets each subsequent Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for 12 weeks.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering the 8 Hour ‘About Boating Safely’ class. This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain their safe boating certificate and card. The class will cover new boating laws, equipment, navigation, trailering, water skiing, and safety guidelines. Beginning Jan. 1, 2016 anyone born after January 1, 1998 will need a safe boating class to operate a boat of more than 10 horsepower. There’s a new act in town for Rialto There’s a new group on Facebook devoted to the Rialto Square Theater: “Working with the Rialto – For the Rialto.”

Sherry Carnes-Lewandowski, a real estate agent who lives in Shorewood, is a driving force behind the page, and she wants to make sure that everyone knows that the new group is not at all connected to another Facebook group, the sometimescontroversial “The Rialto Belongs to the People,” started by Dave Neal and controlled by Mary Beth Gannon.

The people who post on the new page are trying to support the theater by spreading the word about shows, and they are also kicking around ideas for fundraising.

“We are working hard to do right by the Rialto on the page,” CarnesLewandowski said.

Around half of the Will County Board joined several other county officials at the Will County Farm Bureau’s annual government gettogether Feb. 26 at Al’s Steak House in Joliet.

The host for the evening, Farm Bureau Governmental Affairs Chair Jerry Davidson, asked County Executive Larry Walsh to introduce the various dignitaries in the audience.

As Walsh had some difficulty getting the microphone to work, County Board Democratic Caucus Chair Herb Brooks tried to help.

“You don’t need a mic, Larry,” said Brooks, a pastor known for his booming voice.

“I know that,” Walsh replied.

“The only one louder than me is you.”

Romeoville Humane Society continues to care for community; needs volunteers

Cute and cuddly and some of our best friends, for many, animals become part of the family.

The Romeoville Humane Society has made its mission to protect the animals of this community, doing what it takes to care of any animal found on the streets of Romeoville.

The society is a no kill, nonprofit 501c 3 animal shelter dedicated to enriching the lives of animals in the community through dedicated rescue and adoption services. It what began as a small grass-roots movement, Romeoville Humane Society was incorporated in 2009 in an effort to help the community’s stray and abused animals and to educate the community on important animal related issues.

The group provides resource and information to the public about the proper care and training of pets, how to recognize and report animal cruelty, how to help prevent animal over-population, and will also provide assistance with locating lost pets.

This year alone, the humane society has taken in nearly 200 animals and has arranged for all of them to be adopted.

But the group needs help. Those numbers are actually the lowest in six years because of the need for volunteer foster homes.

“We are very proud of this organization and all that it was able to accomplish in 2014. We look

forward to an even better 2015, but we can’t do that without your help,” said Board Member Megan Ziller in their annual report.

Fundraising is a priority as well but also is still low. Ziller said they are trying to generate funds quickly to cover consistent vet bills. The humane society has spent more than $37,000 on vet bills alone in 2014.

Most of the basic veterinary work for the pets is covered by adoption fees. Occasionally the group takes in a pet that has medical needs above and beyond the basic spay/ neuter and vaccines. This year the humane society has been fortunate enough to save an above average amount of special needs pets from being euthanized due to their ailments. However, this has depleted its general funds.

The group is encouraging donations to help replenish its working funds to pay veterinary bills and continue to save up for a building to someday house the animals Throughout the year, various events have been held to raise the much needed funds including photo opportunities at the Spring Craft Fair and Santa Paws; events such as the Joliet Slammers, Bark at the Park and its annual charity bazaar.

“They do such great work and is not an easy thing,” said Village Trustee Linda Palmiter. “They are doing a lot of good for the many

abandoned and abused animals here. There are so many reasons to step up into their program.”

The group is looking for dedicated and understanding people who are willing to open their hearts and their homes to a pet in need and either serve as a foster home or a forever home.

Those interested can visit their website at www. romeovillehumanesociety.com and fill out an application. All pets in the home are required to be spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccines Kitten season is approaching and the group is looking for homes to foster litters of kittens of various ages.

If fostering is not an option, volunteers also are need to care for animals at its two cat centers located at Petco in Romeoville and the Petsmart in Joliet. Store rules require volunteers to be 18 years old and older. Volunteers will be responsible for cleaning, feeding and socializing with the kittens.

Morning and evening shifts are available.

In addition, donations are needed. The group accepts pet food, litters, treat, toy, financial, cleaning, or office supply donations.

For all hockey fans, the humane society’s next fundraiser will include a trip to the Chicago Wolves game at 7 p.m. March 28 at the Allstate Arena, Rosemont.

Price per ticket is $25 and includes a Wolves baseball cap. All proceeds from the fundraising event will benefit the group. The group hosts open meetings every second Wednesday of each month at Fire Station #3, 698 Birch Lane.

ur village of Romeoville has history dated back to the incorporation of 1895. Our village continues to have a great background that needs to be explored, now and in the future.

In the past, I had worked eight years for what is now the White Oak Library. I was privileged to work downstairs (at that time) with the Romeoville Historical Society.

Some names of my mentors were Dorothy Hassert, Mabel Hrpcka, Joyce Kinder and Gladys Hackey. These people are no longer with us. They are in our local Romeoville books and will never be forgotten.

My oldest son delivered newspapers to the now-famous Alice Spangler Home on Normantown Road near (now) Dahlhart.

This is a legacy that I am very proud of.

Our present youth call out to belong and learn about our history. They need to know about our past, present and future.

Our children need a sense of history and structure.

“Bad” history (e.g. the Holocaust) should never be forgotten. “Good” history in the making are homes for our “wounded warriors,” and to always remember all of our veterans from all of the wars. As an

The other event that day? A little history: For more than a quarter century, my family has been joining my brother Gordy and his family at the Pioneer Festival at Pilcher Park Nature Center in Joliet. There are demonstrations of pioneer activities, such as maple syrup making and period games.

The centerpiece, though, is the pancake breakfast held this year March 21 and 22, from 8 a.m. noon.

Our historical society has a dedicated president named Nancy Hackett. Her knowledge guided us toward our first book of old Romeoville. We are now in the process of another book to continue where the previous book left off (Hampton Park).

Nancy is a strong mentor for everyone.

We do have an attitude of gratitude for her leadership. I applaud her continued persistence.

As a very wise trustee of Romeoville said to me, “You do not know where you are going, if you do not know where you are from.” Our past and present is symbolic of our old and our present residents. THANKS FOR HONEST PEOPLE Dear editor, Recently my husband returned home after running some errands and realized his credit card was missing. After retracing his steps he ended up at Sunshine Food Mart, 369 S. Budler Road. It turns out the card fell out of his wallet in that store.

Lipinski invites students to submit art for Congressional Art Competition Winner receives trip to Washington D.C. Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL3) is accepting submissions from all high school students in the Third Congressional District of Illinois for the 2015 Congressional Art Competition.

The winning entry will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year, and the winner will receive two roundtrip tickets to travel to Washington, D.C. in June for the exhibition opening.

Runners-up will have their artwork prominently displayed in Congressman Lipinski’s offices for one year.

Fifth-nine-year coaching icon Gordie Gillespie, died Feb. 28 at his Joliet residence at the age of 88.

Gillespie, who spent 25 years with the University of St. Francis, was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas in July, 2009.

Gillespie posts an overall baseball record of 1,893-952-2.

With St. Francis, Gillespie was 1,020-581-2 in his years on the bench. He spent 10 years at Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he was 239-130. His

college coaching career began at Lewis University, where he was 634-241 in 24 years.

“This has been a great life,” Gillespie told the Bugle in a 2009 story. “I know I am very fortunate and I thank God that He has allowed me to do this. As far as the College Baseball Hall of Fame, it is a tremendous honor.

You feel very humbled by it. I feel the same as when I started.

I don’t have an ego problem.”

Gillespie was not only a baseball coach, nor has he stayed at the college level.

He had a 222-54-6 record in 27 years as coach of Joliet Catholic High School, where he won

Spartans survive sloppy game in regional Young Romeoville team looked its age in 5-point win over Lincoln-Way Central

Romeoville held off LincolnWay Central 32-27 Monday night in the opener of the Class 4A Romeoville Sectional and while it wasn’t the prettiest of wins, the Spartans will take it.

“We got the win, which is the most important thing,” Spartans coach Marc Howard said. “This was our first win in a regional since I’ve been here, so I’m happy about that, but I’m not happy with how we played. We can play better than we did tonight.

I think in the first half, we were 5 for 20 from the field. We missed a lot of easy gimmes.”

The Spartans were a young team coming into the season, but the loss of senior leader

Dwayne Griffin left them even younger and prone getting nervous entering the playoffs.

“Dwayne Griffin going down really hurt us, he was a senior leader,” Howard said. “So now we’re very young. We had to bring up two or three more freshmen and thats how we play. We are inconsistent, they just don’t get it yet. This was a good learning experience.”

Romeoville came out fast, grabbing a fast lead and then succumbing to the pressure of the playoffs.

“When we first came out, it looked like we were ready,” Howard said. “Then we got up five and we missed like three of four layups in a row. From there on, our energy level faded and

Gillespie also coached USF football for eight years, netting a 48-33-0 record.

He coached Lewis’ mens basketball team for 15 years, putting up a 228-124 record.

He also coached women’s basketball at USF for one year, posting an 11-7 mark.

Overall, Gillespie has a coached a total of 3,453 games, with a 2,402-1,170-8 record, a win percentage of .672.

He won four championships in college, three at Lewis and one with the Saints.

“I had a thrill at Lewis when we won three championships in a row in ‘74, ‘75 and ‘76,” he said. “At St. Francis, we won a

championship in 1993. Those are a little extra special because of the extra competition going all the way. It is like winning the World Series anywhere else.”

While in college, Gillespie learned from a pretty good coach, playing for Ray Meyer at DePaul.

As a player, Gillespie posted a record of 2,292-1,122 at DePaul and Kelvyn Park High School in four different sports.

Coming out of college, it was not unusual for him to coach multiple teams.

“It was expected. My first contract at Joliet Catholic, I taught five classes, was assistant football coach, assistant baseball coach and coached the basketball team,” he said. “At one time, I was

head coach in three sports, plus Athletic Director, plus teaching my classes. To coach, you had to teach two classes, so I taught my classes at the high school, then was off to Lewis where I coached basketball and baseball and was Athletic Director.”

That was from 1959-1965, when he coached football at Catholic High and baseball and basketball at Lewis, while serving as AD. His stint as Lewis basketball coach ended in 1965, however, from 19661976, he coached both football at Catholic High and baseball at Lewis. He left Lewis in 1977 and began coaching baseball at St. Francis, where he coached college baseball and high school football until he retired

from the Hilltoppers in 1985.

Gillespie was always more concerned about molding the athlete, not getting the win.

“The W’s and L’s don’t matter really. It is seeing the kids develop. Not only as a player, but in their lives. Having the kids I coached send a picture at Christmas time with their four kids, that is the beauty of it. A lot of fellas are retiring from high school positions, because that can do that at $100,000 a year. And that is great, I am happy for them. “You hope the kids will remember what you have tried to teach them.,” he said. ”The fundamentals are fine, but it is knowing right and wrong. Playing honestly, playing with integrity, playing fairly — that is what it is all

“There have been so many great kids and see them succeed. I don’t know how many kids we had make it in professional baseball, but I was proud of them,” he said.

“I am awfully proud, too of the amount of doctors and lawyers and school teachers. That is what this job is all about.”

Flyers advance to GLVC quarterfinals

Lewis University senior forward Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor) notched a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, along with his 1,000th career-point, as the host Flyers went wire-to-wire for the 70-52 GLVC Men’s Basketball First Round victory over Illinois Springfield at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (March 1) afternoon.

Lewis was 6-for-8 from the field and added a block for good measure.

His 18 points were a season-high, while his 13 caroms were a teamseason high.

Joining Lewis in the offensive attack were senior point guard Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton), freshman guard Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) and junior forward Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Jarosz had a solid all-around game with 17 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, while Strus notched 13 points and added seven boards. Nelson was a perfect 4-for-4

from the field and finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

“We did what we had to do against what I think is the most improved team in the league, the way that (UIS) has been playing lately,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “I thought we handled their small line-ups very well, took care of the ball and Jeff (Jarosz) and Julian (Lewis) were phenomenal.

“It was a good effort against a much improved team.”

With the win, Lewis improves to 21-7 on the season, while UIS ends its season with a mark of 11-16. This marks the ninth-straight season that the Flyers have advanced to the GLVC Quarterfinals. No other team in the conference can lay claim to that achievement.

UIS junior guard JJ Cravatta drained four three-pointers to finish with a team-best 12 points, while junior forward Jamall Millison (4for-16) and Mark Weems (5-for-12) each scored 11 points in the loss for the Prairie Stars.

As a team, Lewis shot 53.3% (24for-45) from the field, while the Flyers held UIS to a 34.5% (20-for-58) shooting performance. The Prairie Stars were held without a field goal over the last 7:26 of the game.

The Flyers also out-rebounded UIS, 40-27, and turned the ball over just 10 times on the afternoon.

Lewis returns to action on Thursday (March 5), as the Flyers and No. 16 Indianapolis meet in a GLVC Quarterfinal match-up in Family Arena at St. Charles, Mo.

WOMEN’S HOOPS In the final regular season game of the season, No. 2 Lewis women’s basketball picked up a 60-46 road Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at UW-Parkside on Thursday (Feb. 26). The win gives Lewis their 17th GLVC win of the season, a new school record for single-season conference wins.

After a back-and-forth first 15 minutes, Lewis finished the first half on a 15-6 run. Senior Jess

Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) had seven of her nine points in the run. The Flyers continued to pour it on to start the second half, opening the final 20 minutes on a 12-0 run. UWParkside’s first point of the second half didn’t come until a layup at the 12:57 mark.

Lewis’ run coincided with a focus to get the ball inside. Lewis attempted 10 3-pointers over the game’s first five minutes, but only five in the following 35 minutes. The extended run put Lewis up by as many as 18 points. UW-Parkside did respond, making it a 10-point Lewis lead at the 8:26 mark, but the Flyers scored the next seven points to put the game away.

The Flyers limited UW-Parkside to a season-low 28.2 percent shooting (20-of-71) from the floor, including a 6-of-33 performance beyond the arc. The 33 3-point attempts are a season high for the Rangers.

Lewis went 14-of-18 from the free throw line while UW-Parkside

missed all five of their free throw attempts. The Rangers didn’t attempt a free throw in the second half.

Junior Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) recorded her 21st double-double of the season and 46th of her career with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./ Marian Catholic) totaled 11 points.

Senior Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) finished with nine points, all in the second half.

“We treated tonight as the first game of the postseason,” Lewis head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “I thought we did a good job on the defensive end and as the game went on we did a better job of getting the ball inside.”

Lewis improves to 27-1 (17-1 GLVC). UW-Parkside falls to 21-6 (14-4 GLVC). The win moves Lewis to 16-0 in games away from Neil Carey Arena this season. The Flyers will continue their season on Friday (March 6) in the GLVC Tournament.

Answering questions about Continuing Education adults go back to school for a variety of reasons. they may have personal accomplishment goals or their motivation could be purely financial. unemployment has recently led many individuals back to the classroom. many colleges and universities report that re-entry or adult students are the new majority on campus. adults ages 25 to 69 are increasingly enrolling in courses around the country.

Going back to school is a serious undertaking. not only is it an investment of time, but it is also an investment of money. For those thinking about going back to school, consider these questions.

1. is nOW thE riGht timE? Those going back to school because they think it might provide better job prospects or yield higher salaries could be mistaken.

Many employers are cutting continuing-education grants and scaling back on hires with advanced degrees.

That’s because companies are feeling the heat of the recession as well. Advanced degrees generally mean having to pay an employee a higher salary, something many companies are not in a position to do right now. Therefore, an advanced degree might prove a hindrance in today’s job market and not become the financial windfall some students expect.
