Commercial, industrial development continues in Bolingbrook Veterans Lake’s 200,000-sq.-ft industrial building among new developments

Bolingbrook continues to see development in its industrial and commercial sectors with large spec buildings constructed throughout the village’s business parks.

Veterans Lake completed an almost 200,000-square-foot industrial building at 990 Veterans Parkway and is ready to lease.

MoltoProperties,1055Remington Boulevard, recently completed a 116,000-square-foot speculative industrial property, and had nearly half of the building was pre-leased before construction was complete.

The group reported that Baldor Chicago Inc. has signed a lease for 57,220 square feet at the property just off Veterans Parkway and Remington Boulevard. The new facility is expected to allow Baldor to experience more functional space,

increase the firm’s visibility and image and provide ample parking for employees, visitors and customers.

Baldor Chicago will take occupancy upon completion by year-end.

Continuing along Veterans Parkway, Molex, an international company, is openinganotherwarehouserecently construction. The company offers a full suite of solutions and services for many markets, including data communications, consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, commercial vehicle and medical.

In addition, the Opus Group is set to open a 112,049-square-foot build at 1325 Remington Blvd. in November.

Also coming in November, are Access Pediatrics to be located at 151 Fernwood Drive and Fiore Nursery at 801 n. Bolingbrook Drive.

Early next year, development is in store for a Marriott Residence Inn, Jet Brite Car Wash and office building,

Trump to make appearance at Bolingbrook Golf Club Mayor Roger Claar is hosting Sept. 12 event

The presidential campaigning is making its way to the area with none other than Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump taking stage at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

The Sept. 12 event is reportedly aiming to catch major donors from the Chicago and Indiana area with the cost ranging from $1,000 per person to $250,000 per couple.

Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar is hosting the event along with businessman Ron Gidwitz, Illinois Trump Victory chair.

Rumors began soon after the announcement that petitions were started to prevent the event from happening while others focused on the fact such an event places Bolingbrook on the map.

Many took to Facebook to comment on Trump’s arrival including DeAun DeYoung Tollner, stating in her message, “Whether you support him or not, a presidential candidate chose BGC/Bolingbrook as a place to make a speech. It’s an honor and a privilege to host such an event.

If you don’t like it, you have a right to speak your mind, but do so respectfully…”

Others disagreed, like Sonya Anderson Ehrich, who replied,

“We have the choice to vote for him or not if we want. Me? He’s not getting my vote. I think he is very racist and sexist and will not be good for our country. But that’s just me.”

This will be Trump’s first event in the Chicago area after a rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus turned ugly and was canceled because of security concerns.

The Bolingbrook Police Department are preparing for Trump’s arrival though cannot release details.

“We are working with the Secret Service and several other agencies to formulate the best plan possible for his arrival,” said Lt. Carter Larry. “This is to ensure the safety and security of everyone who wishes to show up for the event.”

‘Sweet’ parade to step off Sunday

Grab a lawn chair, pick your favorite spot and catch Bolingbrook’s annual Pathway Parade this weekend.

This year’s Bolingbrook Pathways Parade theme is Sweet 2016 and is set to kick off at 2 p.m. rain or shine, Sept. 11 at Bolingbrook High School, on Lily Cache and Raider Way. The parade will travel down Lily Cache to Canterbury to Briarcliff and end at the Village Town Center were everyone is welcomed to join the fun behind village hall at the Bolingbrook Pathways Parade Mini Fest. Live music will be provided from Generator X and awards for the participants will be announced.

This year will mark the occasion’s first annual bag tournament and a chance to win a custom bag set.

Participants are invited to indulge in some local food and family fun.

Developments respond to demands in rentalhousing market Springs at Weber Road, The Brooks on Janes among new complexes

New apartments are opening up to renters in the area, offering luxury apartments throughout Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

Springs at Weber Road recently opened its leasing office at 700 S. Weber Road and the first building move in is scheduled for this month.

Continental Properties developed the $42 million “Class A” community apartment complex on 18 acres of Rose Plaza, located at the northwest corner of Weber and Renwick Roads.

The complex is described as amenity-driven, and will include 15 two-story units comprised of 30 studio apartments, 112 one-bedroom units, 120 two-bedroom units, and 30 three-bedroom units.

Continental has said it developed the site because of the significant demand for rental housing, citing

statistics that show 69 percent of housing options in the area are rentals.

Springs at Weber Road will offer a variety of options, with its studio apartment, its lowest price point at $1,000 a month.

The Springs have more of a townhouse feel and the apartments are seen as an amenity-driven product that include private grounds and entrances; attached and detached garages, a 24-hour fitness center, large gathering rooms, pool, cooking area, dog park and car wash area.

Meanwhile, The Brooks on Janes, another new highend apartment complex in Bolingbrook, is set to open by the end of the year.

The complex located near The Promenade and managed

by Tapestry is currently under construction and will provide 288 high-end apartment units within eight buildings, detached garages and a clubhouse.

According to the village its clubhouse is expected to be ready by November and Building 1 to be delivering units by December.

VVSD’s Visible Learning practices draw national attention Valley View School District 365U’s highly successful Visible Learning program was recently in the national spotlight.

VVSD Executive Director for 6-12 Educational Services Karen Flories facilitated a webinar on how Valley View schools learned to use data to improve staff development and student outcomes.

The hour-long webinar provided

educators throughout the U.S. eith “lessons learned” from the Visible Learning work at VVSD. Participants were invited to “Learn how a large district just outside of Chicago improved and sustained the quality of their staff development to improve adult learning and student outcomes” and “how Visible Learningplus has worked in the district’s diverse

schools.”

Prior to assuming her district role, Flories was Director of Literacy and Social Studies and English Department Chair for Romeoville High School. Her classroom experience includes teaching as a high school English teacher, a special education behavior disorder teacher, and an alternative education teacher.

Recycled trays helping VVSD children become ‘environmental stewards’ Valley View School District 365U took its award-winning environmental efforts to new levels this year replacing Styrofoam trays with recycled cardboard trays in lunchrooms at all 12 elementary schools.

“It was time for us to search for an alternative,” said Meghan Gibbons, VVSD’s Director of Nutrition Services. “It was the right thing to do. It’s teaching our children to be environmental stewards.”

The switch has been a smooth one for VVSD students who now pick up their own trays and select items of their choice from the serving line.

“With the Styrofoam trays, my staff would place the entrées on

the tray and the trays would be set on the countertop. The children would pick up the tray they wanted and then add their sides,” Gibbons said. “It just didn’t feel good for a dining experience. This looks and feels like a more traditional dining experience.”

Students will continue to “tap and stack” their trays when they’re finished eating, a practice initiated several years ago when VVSD began a recycling partnership with Dart Corporation in North Aurora.

Now, instead of VVSD Facilities Department staff members having to drive the trays to North Aurora on a biweekly basis, the trays will be included in the normal refuse recycling pickup at each school.

All five middle schools and both high schools will continue using hard plastic trays that are cleaned in school dishwashing machines and re-used over and over again.

“We don’t have dish machines at the elementary level because there’s no room,” Gibbons said.

International educational consultant and researcher Dave Nagel, a former science teacher, joined her in the webinar. Nagel works with school districts in implementing Visible Learning, Common Formative Assessments, and more.

He is the author of Effective Grading Practices for Secondary Teachers (Corwin).

Romeoville woman wins $250K prize Romeoville resident Nishita Patel played an Illinois Lottery $250,000 Crossword ticket and ticket and instantly won a $250,000 top prize.

Patel was at Homers Liquors, 13011 W. 143rd St. in Homer Glen, when she bought and scratched her ticket.

When asked about her plans for the winnings she said, “I am going to make wise investments.”

Get the oil changed, plan dinner party, write thank you notes – these are the items on my to-do list for today. And I mean a physical list, not just some ideas floating around in my head. Why do I need an actual list for only three things?

Having a physical list prevents me from forgetting things, reminds me of what to focus on and frees me from the stress of having to remember. A physical list is different from having it in my head – it’s like a best friend who gently reminds me what and when I should be working on things to keep me out of trouble. It puts me in control of my day, and it can do the same for you. Whether you prefer your lists in handwritten (my personal preference) or electronic form, here are some of my favorite lists that you may want to create for yourself:

MASTER TO-DO LIST—This is where I capture things I have to do that I’m not quite sure when I’ll do. For example, I want to research buying a new tree for my backyard. I could just choose a date

to do it and jot it down in my planner.

However, I’m not quite sure when I’ll do it. So rather than trusting that I’ll remember to do it at some point, I’ve added it to my master to-do list. I review this list once a week and schedule things once I know when I’ll do them.

WEEKLY TO-DO LIST—My weekly to-do list contains things I want to remember to do every week: water the houseplants, plan next week’s meals, prepare for next week’s clients, etc.

DAILY TO-DO LIST—I have two kinds of daily to-do lists; one is for today’s unique tasks – three to five things I want to get done today that I write in my planner. I also have a daily list of recurring tasks to do each day: water outdoor flowers, thaw tomorrow’s dinner, check my social media sites, etc.

Although I remember to do most of these things without looking at the list, having them written down keeps items from being forgotten (and keeps my flowers alive).

SHOPPING LISTS—I have running lists for a variety of stores that I add to whenever I think of something I need: the grocery store, general merchandise store, home improvement store and clothing store. Listing items by store simplifies shopping and help prevent me from forgetting to get something while at the store.

DISCUSS LIST—I talk by phone once a week with my son who lives out of state. Throughout the week I often think of things I want to mention to him during our call – they’re not important enough to call about right away and also aren’t worthy of the time it would take to send a text or email.

My list lets me hang up from our weekly calls not regretting that I forgot to mention something. You might have a similar list for collecting questions you want to ask the doctor on your next visit, questions for your next parent-teacher conference, etc.

Parenting a child with a disability is no easy task After killing her daughter Courtney, 26, who had cerebral palsy, by placing capsules in her feeding tube, Bonnie Liltz then tried to commit suicide. She was charged with first-degree murder.

Sadly, her sentence was reduced from a possible 14-year prison term for manslaughter to four years. Had the original charge of first-degree murder stuck, a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years would have applied.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “The legislature intentionally made reckless death a probationable offense.”

Robert Loeb, a Chicago criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor, said last week, “And we should see some probation given for deaths under some

cases. This sounds like the case.”

The Chicago Tribune reported that Stephen Drake, of the disabilityrights group Not Dead Yet, said this is yet another case where a child with a disability is viewed as a burden and parents who care for them viewed as saints.

Courtney was unable to perform most of her daily activities without assistance; her mother, and killer, had numerous health problems. Certainly, these pressures can take a toll on anyone. But, do they justify the murder of one’s child?

Is a four-year prison stay enough for this horrid crime?

I have cerebral palsy. For the past few years, my ability to perform many

of the tasks that I once was able to do has decreased. Like thousands of people with disabilities, I hire personal assistants to do whatever I cannot. I still work full time, pay taxes and participate in all society has to offer. That said, many people who are currently disability-free cannot fathom living in my “condition.”

Parenting a child, disabled or not, is no easy task. Community resources must be available to prevent the unnecessary deaths of more people like Courtney.

What better way to honor this innocent victim?

Bolingbrook is looking to get the right mix of players in positions By marK gregory sports reporter

This season, the Bolingbrook soccer team is like a big puzzle for coach Jamie Clemmons to figure out how to fit together to give the team a winning combination.

So far, so good.

“Our defense is without Tyler (Elmore) and Jake (Perakis), our two center backs from last year,” Clemmons said. “They didn’t come back for their senior years.

Last year, we had 16 shutouts in 25 games with those two guys back there. I have a sophomore, Mauricio Bahena, and a junior, Jaidyn Myrick, that had never played a varsity game. They are learning on the fly, but they are doing good. Last year I could play those guys at defensive center mid and midfield forward and it makes us more dynamic. We would be a totally different team with [Elmore and Perakis] back there but we don’t have them and we have to figure out who fits best where despite age or position.

“We are piecing together spots and it will be a work in progress every day.”

Not only are the Raiders looking for defensive help from young players – they are looking for offense as well.

“We are still trying to find out who will be our goal scorers.

Losing Luis (Flores) and Erik (Gonzalez), they were 30 of our 48 goals from last year,” Clemmons

said. “We are getting them on a cross here, a header there. We have two goals already from the right back coming out of there with headers, so it is a work in progress.

Anguel (Sanchez), who played up top with Luis all last year has been out with a concussion.”

Bolingbrook has a mix of upper and lower classmen and is looking to fit them all together.

“We have three freshmen and two sophomores and they are getting their minutes and hopefully by the end of the year, they have gotten some valuable minutes so when it is crunch time, I can put them in and know they will get the job done,” Clemmons said. “Our biggest thing is that our seniors now were role players last year and this year, we need them to be leaders and they are figuring out how to lead. I keep telling them we need guys to step up in key moments and eventually that will come. They will find their niche and find their leadership style.”

One of those seniors is ready for a rebound season after struggles last year.

“Javier Chavez in the middle,” Clemmons said. “He was our attacking center mid last year, but he had some injuries and eligibility problems last year, but this year he is spot on and ready to go.”

GAME 3: romeoville @ plainfield N The details: After facing a pair of defending state champions, the Raiders enter the SouthWest Suburban Conference tilt against a familiar foe.

Stagg is one of four teams on the Raiders’ slate that were in the SWSC Blue last year before that was dismantled with the departures of Joliet West and Joliet Central.

Keys to the game: With a new offense still being tweaked and one of the predicted best teams in the state next week in Lincoln-Way East, this is a game for Bolingbrook to sharpen all its new tools.

The Raiders can’t get caught looking past a beatable Stagg team to the Griffins and their 100-plus man team. There will be plenty of time to prep for

game time 7 p.m. Friday week 4, the Raiders just need to stay focused on week 3 and open league play with a win.

bolingbrook @ stagg The details: n a week that for most teams is the beginning of the conference season, these two Southwest Prairie Conference stalwarts come in to week three of the season with a pair of league games already under their belts.

Romeoville has talent, but also a lot of youth in key places.

Merging those two are the key to success for the Spartans.

Keys to the game: The idea of

football is really pretty simple at its core. Without possession of the ball, it is impossible to score points.

So, when Romeoville takes on Plainfield North, one of the top teams in the league, it will be a matter of who can control the possessions.

Both teams have talented running backs capable of pacing the tempo. The Spartans have to

Cross country teams looking for solid seasons Fall preview responses were submitted by coaches and all responses are in their words, edited for space and style.

Bolingbrook Boys Cross Country Coach: Art Pahl Key returners:: Caleb Robertson and Joshua Beyler are returning sectional qualifiers.

Key newcomers: Only new runners are freshmen (so) we’ll see what they can accomplish.

Goals: Improve on last year’s place in the conference meet and qualify the team to the sectional.

Keys: We need to continue to improve on our mileage and our conditioning. Our returning varsity need to work together as a group better than they did last year.

By the end of the year you expect: By the end of the season we need a tight pack in order to advance as a team from the regional to the sectional meet. An individual state qualifier would be a lofty objective.

Coach quote: I am hoping that 2007 Bolingbrook grad Troy Doris’ seventh-place finish in the triple jump at the Rio Olympics can be

used as inspiration for our athletes as to what is possible if you work for it.

Romeoville Boys Cross Country Coach: Richard Dellamorte Key returners:: Senior Justin Suits is a three-time sectional qualifier. Last year his best time for a three mile race was a 16:37. This year he is hoping to run three miles below 16 minutes. Senior Carlos Ibanez is a three-time sectional qualifier. Last year his best time for a three mile race was 16:48. This year he is also hoping to run three

miles under 16 minutes. Junior Dan Ford is a two-time sectional qualifier. Last year his best time for a three-mile race was 16:15. This year he is hoping to run under 16 minutes for three miles.

Key newcomers: This year we will have three new runners on varsity: Tony Franco, Elvis Quiroz and Thomas Rocha. These three runners have been working hard to be competitive on varsity and I look forward to seeing their results this season.

Goals: Our goal every year is to improve on the previous year’s performance.

This year I would like to finish higher on the sectional team results. I also have a goal to qualify at least one runner for the IHSA state invitational.

Keys: Like most sports the key for success is working hard as a team. If our group of runners can push themselves and the teammates around them then we will have a successful season.

By the end of the year you expect: At the end of the year I expect to have at least one runner that can run three miles in under 16:00 and have my team advance to sectionals.

Slammers to host 2017 Frontier League All-Star game The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy announced Friday they will host the 2017 Frontier League All-Star game July 12 at Silver Cross Field.

The announcement comes just days after the Slammers earned the title of Frontier League East Division Champions.

“We are extremely excited to have been selected to host the 2017 Frontier League All-Star Game,” said Joliet Slammers President and CEO Nick Semaca.

“It is a great tribute to our fans, the City of Joliet, and all of Will County and we are looking for a

great week of celebration for the game next July”.

Monday, July 10 will mark the beginning of the All-Star festivities with a welcome reception for Frontier League All-Stars and staff that evening.

The Bill Lee Golf Outing will be held Tuesday, July 11 for staff and players, followed by the Home Run Derby set for 7 p.m.

The All-Star Game will take place on Wednesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. following a luncheon where Frontier League Hall of Fame inductees will be announced.

A special guest speaker will

be announced in the coming months. The luncheon is open to players, staff and the public.

Individual tickets for both the Home Run Derby and All-Star game will go on sale at a later date. Group pricing is available and little league teams will have the opportunity to shag balls during the Home Run Derby if purchasing group tickets for that day.

It will be the first time since 2004 that Joliet has hosted an All-Star game. It is likely to be the only event of its kind for several more years.

The Joliet Slammers were recently named Frontier League East Division Champions following their 5-2 win over Lake Erie on Wednesday, September 31.

and two on the road, and return home on Friday, September 9 at 7:05 pm for game three. Games four and five will be held at home on Saturday, September 10 at 6:05 pm and Sunday, September 11 at 3:15 pm if necessary.

The Frontier League also named its 2016 post-season award winners on Thursday and awarded Manager Jeff Isom the Roger Hanners Award for Manager of the Year, Liam O’Sullivan the Brian Tollberg Award for Pitcher of the Year, and Andrew Gates of ATI Physical Therapy Trainer of the Year.

So far, Bolingbrook is on the right track to put the puzzle together.

“We have been in every game and we are playing competitive soccer and we want to figure it out by conference and be rolling then and firing on all cylinders by playoffs,” Clemmons said. “We are doing good, I have no complaints.

We are battling every game to get

Thornton’s gas station coming to Rt. 53, Romeo Rd.

Construction is set to begin for a Thornton’s gas station and Romeoville Express Car Wash.

According to the village of Romeoville, commercial real estate developer Troutman and Dams acquired 10.7 acres from the Diocese of Joliet for a retail

development at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Romeo Road.

Development plans have been approved for a Thorntons gas station that includes a 4,400 square foot convenience store at the hard corner and the Romeoville Express Car Wash on the lot immediately north of Thorntons.

The development will support approximately 30,000 square feet of total retail space.

It’s a great place, and we truly believe our kids are getting a wonderful, faith-based education, but the tuition is pretty expensive. We’ve already had to start digging into our savings to make this happen, and the kids are only in elementary school.

Should we keep them enrolled,

or should we transfer them to public school?

Maureen Dear Maureen, I understand wanting your kids to get the best education possible.

Private schools can provide some advantages academically, while a good Christian school might offer spiritual advantages. But, the bottom line is this: if you can’t cash flow it, you shouldn’t do it.

All of my kids went to public schools, and they are good, moral people and strong Christians. In the process, they learned how to interact with people of all faiths, no faith, and how to display their faith and beliefs adequately in their personal lives and in the marketplace.

The truth is, you’ll find great things and bad things in any school, private or public, Christian

or not. And no matter where your kids go to school, as parents, you still have to teach them about the world – the good and the bad, the right and the wrong. Life can’t be lived inside a protective bubble.

Since 1987, Library Card Signup Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. The American Library Association and libraries join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Stop in to any White Oak Library District branches with a photo I.D. that has your current address, to receive a library card.
