Local teen takes ‘Miss Teen Illinois’ crown Bolingbrook resident captures Ms. Illinois Teen crown

A’Maiya Allen is a woman of many talents, including playing the clarinet, saxophone, writing, an advocate against bullying, and oh that’s right, winning the Miss Illinois Teen USA pageant.

Allen was crowned over Labor Day weekend in Bloomington, IL on the campus of Illinois State University. Eighteen-year-old Allen who competed in her first competition at the age of 10, knew that being on stage is where she wanted to be.

“I can honestly say that I was not always in support of pageants,” said Sharon Allen, A’Maiyas mom. “However, when A’Maiya started showing an in-

terest in pageants at a young age and I saw how she began to transform from a shy little girl to a more confident young lady who enjoyed being on stage I was definitely for it.”

The young and talented standout, who took first place out of 36 overall pageant contestants in the competition, is also the second African-American ever to win the award next to last year’s winner, Sydni Dion Bennett.

Competing in her second go around in this competition after finishing in the top 15 last year, A’Maiya said she wasn’t as nervous as she would normally be because of her diligent work ethic she put in to capture the title this year.

“I usually get nervous with butterflies for all my competitions,” A’Maiya said. “This time around I felt more prepared though, because I trained at a higher level than I ever have before.”

With the different components of the pageant, A’Maiya said that her father, David, was very in-

strumental on helping her be victorious.

“Both of my parents are an awesome support system, and they are both my cheerleaders,” A’Maiya said. “My dad though is actually the one who coaches me, gets my wardrobes ready and practices interview questions with me.”

With a total of 36 competitors trying to win, A’Maiya knew she had to be at the top of her game.

“There’s a few different competitions we have to compete in,” A’Maiya said. “There’s the interview portion where we have two or three minutes to answer a question from each judge, a fitness portion and evening gown.

If a contestant advances, to the top five, she has onstage questions so the judges get a better sense of her personality.

Even though A’Maiya said every section had its fair share of challenges, the fitness portion took the most work.

What do you get when you take 50-plus men, food and a garage?

One of the biggest fundraisers in Will County.

In its 10th year, the Men Who Cook fundraiser, benefiting the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, was relocated to Chicagoland Speedway and held in the infield garage that houses the Xfinity Series drivers and their cars on NASCAR weekend.

The venue change was needed to accommodate the growing numbers of attendees and what better place than in a garage for guys to show off their culinary talents and raise money.

“Last year we probably lost a couple hundred people because we didn’t have parking and we hit 1,100 last year, and I jokingly said maybe we can hit 2,000 this year,” said Will County State’s Attorney James W. Glasgow, who established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995. “But if we get 1,500, I will be ecstatic.”

The Children’s Advocacy Center is a 501(c)3 charitable organization created to improve the integrity of all investigations into allegations of child sexual abuse, while providing “hope, healing and justice for the children and their families.”

welfare workers and medical professionals, thereby increasing their trauma and enabling predators to exploit minor differences in their various statements.

“Our center is a little different than other child advocacy centers in that we are only 25percent funded by the county and most other centers are up around 75 percent,” Glasgow said. “So we have to do more fundraising so that is why it is very important that this fundraiser be large and successful.”

Not only did patrons enjoy supporting the cause – so did the men doing the cooking.

While the chefs were from all walks of life, a few police departments in particular went all out, donning costumes and winning the public over not only with their food, but their antics.

“First and foremost, it is a wonderful cause,” said Shorewood Police Detective Paul Hulbert, who was with other Shorewood officers in a luauthemed pulled pork stand complete with Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts. “Our department

Possibly the highlight of the vendors was the booth headed up by the Channahon Police Department as they went full Ricky Bobby with their Talladega Nights theme.

“We have come out over the past few years and it is always hard to come up with new themes, but when we saw it was going to be at the speedway, what a better way than to break out Talladega Nights,” said Matt Brooks, Detective Sergeant.

Brooks Middle School 6th graders were treated to a visit from author Ms. Anne Sibley O’Brien to talk about how her personal experiences helped her write her novel In the Shadow of the Sun. Ms. O’Brien grew up in South Korea as the child of medical missionaries. She describes how that experience has influenced her life and her career as an author.

“My career creating multicultural children’s books is a direct response to my childhood in Korea, which kindled in me a fascination for the beauty and glory of human differences, and a passion for the truth that, across their differences, we are all one human family. We belong to each other. That’s what I’m trying to get to, through all my work.”

In the video she describes what is was like as a child to go from being like everyone else in New Hampshire, to being the one who was different in Korea.

“We would Skype for about a month when A’Maiya was away at college,” David said. “It was kind off difficult at first, but we got through it as a family and we were just so overjoyed when we

found out she captured the title.”

Now that A’Maiya has accomplished one of her main goals, she says that she will be setting her sights on capturing the Miss Teen USA title in the summer of 2019.

Lincoln turns tide in debates against Douglas in Galesburg

BY OWEN W. MUELDER FOR THE REGISTER-MAIL OF GALESBURG The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are among the most important events in the United State’s history.

The seven debates were conducted throughout Illinois in the summer and fall of 1858. Not only significant in their own time, the debates have since been recognized as an ultimate example of our political process which has continued throughout the centuries as most office seekers nationwide debate each other every campaign season.

Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were respectively the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the U.S. Senate. The primary question these men discussed was whether slavery should be extended into the nation’s territories.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he loathed slavery and looked forward to a time when it would disappear. He also maintained that it should be forbidden from being established in new states that desired to join the Union. Douglas defended the concept of “Popular Sovereignty,” whereby the people who resided in western territories should have the right to decide if slavery would be allowed.

The slavery question was so important then that no other political issue was raised by either candidate during the debates.

Public oratory was popular in the 19th century; both candidates often used harsh language and outspoken mud-slinging to characterize each other. People attending these contests also shouted out derogatory comments and catcalls toward both men. Spectators came from every part of Illinois to hear the speakers and newspapers throughout the country published detailed accounts.

The first debate, in Ottawa, was held on a blisteringly hot day in the third week of August. Most historians agree Douglas put Lincoln on the de-

fensive; consequently, the “Little Giant” appeared to be the winner.

However, at the second contest in Freeport, Douglas was put on the defensive. Lincoln asked Douglas how he could reconcile his “Popular Sovereignty” stance with the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which ruled that slaveholders had the right to introduce slavery into the territories. If Douglas responded that he supported the Dred Scott decision he would please Southerners, but if he stood by his “Popular Sovereignty” position, most Southerners would never forgive him.

His reply that day has since been dubbed the “Freeport Doctrine.”

Douglas responded to Lincoln’s query by saying the people who settled a territory would determine whether or not slavery could exist there. Put back on his heels, he hoped his answer would satisfy all parties, but it failed.

The third debate, in mid-September in downstate Jonesboro, was poorly attended. In southern Illinois, slavery was popular with many citizens. Lincoln finally came out more forcefully in Jonesboro, but he faced a hostile crowd and was characterized by Douglas as a radical. This debate is considered by most scholars a somewhat inglorious affair. The fourth debate, in Charleston, was on neutral ground for both men and is remembered as a stalemate.

On a chilly day at Knox College’s Old Main in Galesburg, the fifth debate on Oct. 7 drew more spectators than any of the other six contests.

Lincoln scholars are nearly unanimous in describing this debate as the one where Lincoln found his legs, displaying a confidence he had not shown before.

Lincoln knew Galesburg was an abolitionist town, known for harboring fugitives on the Underground Railroad. Standing erect and selfassured on a stage above the crowd, Lincoln spoke for the first time at length about the immorality of slavery.

“I confess myself as belonging to that class in the country that contemplates slavery as a moral, social and political evil,” he said. Paraphrasing Henry Clay, he accused Douglas of “blowing out the moral lights around us.”

Lincoln biographer Benjamin Thomas described the Galesburg contest as the turning point for Lincoln. One Boston newspaper reporter described Lincoln as “eloquent and bold.” Lincoln was so successful emphasizing this moral theme in Galesburg that he repeated it at the sixth debate in Quincy.

Douglas, often a heavy drinker, was described as “tight”and spoke slowly, hammering home his contention that decisions about slavery should be left to local and state governments. In the final debate, at Alton, which was a rehashing of the previous points, Douglas, his voice fraying, seemed worn down. An energetic Lincoln said the Declaration of Independence applied to all men, not just some, and the slavery question was between right and wrong.

In November, the state Legislature re-elected Douglas by 54 to 46, but the debates catapulted Lincoln’s name and reputation across the nation; the Republican Party nominated him for the presidency two years later. His election victory proved to be a significant watershed in American history.

After graduating most of its team from a year ago, Romeoville soccer is battling this season

Last year was a banner season for the Romeoville boys soccer team.

This season has been more of a struggle for the Spartans.

Romeoville saw it’s uneven season take a downward turn last week with a four of losses , three in a four day span.

The last conference loss was a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Southwest Prairie Conference opponent Oswego East on Thursday, Sept. 20 in Oswego.

The latest loss, a 3-1 defeat

by West Aurora, left the Spartans (5-9, 1-3), who after being a factor last year, on the outside looking in for the conference race. It was their third loss to Oswego East (9-2-2, 4-0) in the past two seasons.

“We were 16-5-1 last year,” Romeoville coach Nick Cirrincione said. “But we lost 13 seniors from that team, including eight who are playing soccer in college.”

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, the Spartans lost 3-2 in another Southwest Prairie Conference meeting, which was decided in penalty kicks, to host Plainfield North. The day before that they lost a nonconference clash by the score of 1-0 at home

to University High out of Chicago.

“We lost in PK’s to Plainfield North” Cirrincione said. “We expended a lot of energy in that Plainfield North game. Then we came out flat against a good team [Oswego East] and they took it to us.”

Cirrincione, who is in his ninth season as head coach of the Spartans, thought that showed in the opening minutes of the game at Oswego East. That’s because the Wolves scored when a crossing pass went off a Romeoville player and into the net for an own goal in the fifth minute. It was credited to junior forward Dacarlos Pardodis-Yu. The score remained 1-0 for nearly 30 minutes. But the Spartans couldn’t muster much offense.

Senior defender Cristian Martinez took a restart shot that was saved with 16:41 left in the half.

About 40 seconds later sophomore forward Edrick Padilla had a corner kick from the left side that didn’t result in a shot.

“We had a lot of ups and downs out there,” Martinez said. “We’re not the best team this year, but we’re trying to progress. We just have to work on focusing and supporting each other. We have SEE SPARTANS PAGE 9

Lewis crowdfunding campaign kicks off

more second half goals. Junior midfielder Ethan Klosterman crossed in a shot from the left to just inside the right post with 32:46 to play in the game. Senior midfielder Nolan Laczynski and junior defender Nathan Czepiel chipped in with goals in the final 17:44 of the game.

The Lewis University Athletics Department – in conjunction with the Lewis University Office of Advancement – is proud to announce the Fifth Annual Flyer Alumni, Friends and Family Crowdfunding Campaign.

The Athletics Department’s most successful fundraising campaign will run from September 24th to November 30th. To date, the campaign has raised more than $260,000 and saw over 700 donors contribute last year.

This campaign aims to support all Lewis student-athletes and help them maintain the resources necessary to once again be one of the top Division II athletic programs in the nation. In the past four seasons, Lewis has finished in the Top 20 percent of the Learfield Directors’ Cup – which is a program that measures overall athletic excellence.

The Flyers are equally as impressive in the classroom. The Athletics Department has a Student-Athlete Academic Success rate of 91% and collectively, all 20 Flyer teams combined for a cumulative gradepoint-average of 3.29 in 2017-18.

The Flyer Alumni, Friends and Family Crowdfunding Campaign will help our 22 intercollegiate athletic teams raise funds for specific equipment, travel and training enhancements for their programs.

Each team and each studentathlete has a dedicated fundraising page that you can access and share. With once click of a button, our staff and student-athletes can reach their internal network via social media channels, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Teams also have the opportunity to reach five different $500 incentives. Teams will be rewarded for having the largest percentage of athletic alumni giving to their program, the quickest to raise $5,000, most money raised, most gifts raised per student-athlete and the biggest increase from the 2017 campaign.

Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the internet. It is immensely popular and has allowed countless numbers of organizations across the country raise funds for special projects with an extensive reach that cannot be matched.

Every gift made to this campaign contributes to helping create the best student-athlete experience for Lewis athletes and to building an even stronger athletic and educational foundation.

Isaac Zurita was in net for Romeoville. While the Wolves put in six tallies, the junior was all over making many other saves, including a couple of div-

ing ones.

“Issac is the fourth goalie we’ve used this year,” Cirrincione said.

“And he may be the best one.”

Last year the Spartans lost twice to Oswego East, including 6-5 in a game decided in penalty kicks on Oct. 17 in the semifinals of the Naperville Central Regional. Both teams are in the same sectional again this season.

“We still have high hopes, we’re still looking up for the regional,” Romeoville senior midfielder Fernando Amador said. “That’s our main goal. We have to keep it tighter as a team.

We have to find a way to sort out our mistakes and fix them in practice.”

When the postseason opens, in mid October, the Spartans will be at the Class 3A Geneva Sectional. Some of the states top teams, including two-time defending state champion Naperville North, are there.

Center to host weekly job fair on Sept. 28 Job seekers are invited to attend a weekly job fair from 9 to 11 a.m.

JOLIET – Area job seekers are invited to attend a weekly job fair from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the Workforce Center of Will County.

Among the positions employers will be looking to fill are school bus drivers, warehouse associates, assemblers, forklift operators, machine operators, pickers/packers, verifiers, customer service representatives, HVAC service/installation technician, maintenance technician, production manager, quality assurance technician.

Also CDL drivers, trailer mechanics, order/picker selector, administrative assistant, sales associate, general laborers, production workers, warehouse loaders, material operator, order fillers, auditor/inventory taker, CNC machinist-lathe, CNC machinist trainee, and polisher/ deburrer.

WCWC Manager Susan Flessner said the events allow job seekers to meet with several employers at once.

“Someone looking for a job can make many contacts in one day and employers are able to interview people on the spot,” she said.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh encourages job seekers to be prepared to take advantage of the weekly events.

“The Workforce Center of Will County is the place to go to find a job,” he said. “Susan Flessner and her staff work hard to organize these weekly job fairs that bring multiple employers to one location at one time.”
