After a failed attempt at a referendum in March, the White Oak Library District is hoping to get a positive response for its request this fall.

In an effort to answer patron’s request for increased hours and additional resources, the library board opted to place a question on the March ballot but was voted down.

Library Director Scott Pointon believes voters in March may have confused White Oak’s referendum with that of the Plainfield Public Library’s referendum, which was also being promoted at the same time and was more expensive.

Considering the town’s proximity to one another, library supporters believe information “was simply getting mixed up.”

“The two reasons we heard most why people voted it down was because of confusion over the Plainfield referendum and they did not know what our increased hours would be,” said Pointon.

Hoping with Plainfield off the ballot, the White Oak referendum would be clearer, the library board decided to pursue the referendum again this November.

The question asks voters to approve a referendum that would raise the limiting rate for tax purposes to 22.6 cents; essentially $10 more taxes per year for a property valued at $100,000.

Average homes in the White Oak Library District would pay between $16 and $17 more per year if this referendum is approved.

The White Oak Library District consists of three branches including Crest Hill, Lockport, and Romeoville and unincorporated areas, serving 80,000 local residents.

According to Pointon, nearly 25 percent of the population is senior citizens.

The district hopes to expand its Outreach services to meet the growing demand for services to its older adult patrons.

In addition, Pointon explains the library needs to expand its hours of operation to meet the demands of its users, opening earlier on weekdays and adding more hours on weekends.

If approved, the referendum would also allow for the creation of a digital media lab where patrons can transfer VHS to DVD, restore family photos, create cutting edge promotional materials, record audio podcasts, film captivating videos, compose music, among other digital projects.

or discuss library matters at a new series of meetings, “Coffee with the Director,” scheduled for 10 a.m., October 4 at the Romeoville branch, 201 Normantown Road; 10 a.m., Oct. 11, at the Lockport branch,121 E. 8th Street; and 10 a.m. Oct. 25 at the Crest Hill branch, 20670 Len Kubinski Drive.

The White Oak Library District last passed a referendum in 2010, which afforded the district to renovate its Romeoville and Lockport locations and build a new Crest Hill branch location.

In the past fiscal year, the library checked out 674,163 items to its patrons; a 7.8 percent increase in usage over the previous year, and a 21 percent increase over usage from five years ago.

Growing in attendance each year, the sixth annual Day of the Immigrant is expected to draw thousands for a celebration that focuses positively on immigrant contributions. The event will be held from 2 to 11 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center, 375 Briarcliff Road.

The event, sponsored by the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project, is designed to strengthen the voices of the immigrant community living in the southwest suburbs in Will and DuPage Counties.

Jose Vera, executive director of SSIP, is a graduate of Bolingbrook High School and a “Dreamer,” one of many undocumented immigrants in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, has been

working to build the event each year.

The Day of the Immigrant was first celebrated in 2010. A small grassroots efforts initiative, the SSIP first began with a march through downtown Naperville to bring attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform and ended with a day of community service.

The event and organizers have not shied from their original mission, and have expanded it expeditiously, now being seen as a “powerhouse” in the southwest suburbs with more than 8,000 attendees at last year’s event.

In addition, Billboard Latin!’s Griselda Flores, of Los Angeles will be joining SSIP, exclusively for the Day of the Immigrant.

This year’s event will continue to support SSIP’s mission of community organizing for the rights of immigrants in Chicago’s southwest suburbs through education, civic engagement, and advocacy.

A family fun event, a resource fair, kids’ activities, live music, folkloric ballet performances, beer garden, and food will round out the festival.

Romeoville HS Marching Spartans finish 3rd at Stagg The Romeoville High School Marching Spartans opened their competition season Sept. 10 by placing third in Class 3A at the 37th Annual Stagg Marching Band Jamboree.

Romeoville presented its show titled “Neo*Gyptian” in competing against 10 other bands in its class (a total of 21 bands were classified in three sizes based on the number of playing musicians).

A panel of judges named Waubonsie Valley the Class 3A and overall Grand Champion with a score of 66.75. Joliet West was second in 3A at 66.05 and Romeoville finished a close third at 65.95.

During the visits, sponsored by Citgo’s Lemont Refinery, a Bess the Book Bus volunteer read several books to students who then were able to visit the bus and pick out a free book to take home.

The program was founded 14 years ago in honor of Bess O’Keefe (“Nana Bess”) to bring the joy of reading to children nationwide.

Funding program aims to help homeowners Hardest Hit Fund is sponsored by the Illinois Housing Development Authority

As the need for mortgage relief continues throughout the area, the return of the Illinois Hardest Hit Fund program is a welcome endeavor and one the Community Service Council of Northern Will County is promoting to its constituents.

The Hardest Hit Fund, sponsored by the Illinois Housing Development Authority, was initially launched in 2011 and ran until funds were depleted. The IHDA relaunched the program in August and the Community Service Council has already seen more than 60 applicants.

The CSC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit service agency dedicated to helping people with financial and social issues in Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Lockport, Plainfield and Lemont.

The HHF program provides mortgage assistance to homeowners who have experienced at least a 15 percent income reduction due to a qualifying hardship event

and who meet the eligibility criteria. The assistance allows eligible households to avoid foreclosure, while they work to regain employment and financial stability.

Executive Director of the CSC Robert Kalnicky explained that this time around, eligibility requirements have been relaxed, allowing for more commonplace situations homeowners face become eligible now.

“This fund fills a void that largely gets ignored,” said Kalnicky. “This is for the people who have lost income yet are trying to do the right thing and pay their bills and are looking for ways to try to help themselves.”

He also advises those interested to apply as soon as possible to take advantage of the opportunity before funds are exhausted. In 2011, IHDA was approved by the US Treasury Department to administer approximately $445 million in Hardest Hit funding. In 2016, IHDA was awarded nearly $269.5 million in additional funding to expand the HHF program.

“The idea is the sooner you

can get your application in, the better,” said Kalnicky.

To qualify, applicants must have experienced a reduction in income due to a qualifying hardship event that was through no fault of their own; occurred after January 2010 and after the property was purchased. The property must be in Illinois.

A loss of income is described as unemployment/ underemployment decrease; a loss of business income; loss due to disability or health-related event; death of a spouse (or title holder); and, new for the program, divorce of a spouse or title holder.

Applicants must have experienced a 15 percent reduction in income and their household income cannot exceed 120 percent of the area median income household and cannot have assets that exceed $17,500.

In addition, the lender must be participating in the HHF program and willing to accept payments on the applicant’s behalf and applicants cannot have received HHF assistance before.

Eligible households can receive up to $35,000 in assistance. The program offers two types of assistance including a one-time payment to reinstate the loss

or monthly mortgage payment assistance that pays 100 percent of the mortgage for up to 12 months.

Kalnicky said applicants should start the application online and choose the Community Service Council as their HHF Sponsor Agency. The CSC can then help work with the applicant

throughout the process, which could take to 120 days.

To accommodate patron’s schedules the CSC has recently extended hours.The CSC is opened from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

One hundred years ago, almost no Americans brushed their teeth. We had radios, cars and telephones, but refused to own toothbrushes. They were readily available, as were various forms of toothpastes and powders for cleaning teeth. But, it wasn’t until a cue and a reward was discovered that brushing became a habit.

We like to think that we brush our teeth because it’s a healthy thing to do. If asked, most people will say they brush because it’s an easy way to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health. But wearing sunscreen is also a simple behavior to do, and applying it daily before going out would prevent a huge number of people from being diagnosed with skin cancer. Yet, only a tiny portion of the population puts on sunscreen every day.

Next is our reaction – the automatic way that we respond to the reminder. The final part is a reward, which serves to reinforce the

What the toothpaste company Pepsodent did in the 1920s was to find a reminder and a reward that would trigger people to crave brushing and make it part of their routine. By adding a foaming agent and mint oil to their toothpaste, they created a pleasing effect associated with brushing.

And, just as importantly, they developed an advertising campaign centered around reminding people to check for a film on their teeth, which was sneakily linked to having a dirty mouth.

It turns out that foaming, minty toothpaste does absolutely nothing to clean our teeth. And the film that forms is quite natural and harmless.

Brushing is good for other reasons, but those were not well known at the time. Nevertheless, the reminder and the reward worked so well that within a generation, almost everyone in America was brushing regularly. Today, the behavior is so encoded in our own routines that we hardly give it any thought at all.

Have you ever found yourself driving home when you realized you couldn’t remember how you got there?

It turns out this is an amazingly useful adaptation our brains have made.

Picture your brain by making a fist with your thumb sticking straight down, as if giving a thumbs-down sign.

The thumb is your brain stem; the meaty part at the base of your thumb is a primitive area that ensures we swallow and breathe; everything inside your fist that you can’t see is your limbic system, which contains our reward circuitry and basic drives; and your knuckles and back of your hand represent your cortex, the higher order human-making parts.

The reason your best ideas come to you when showering, driving or walking is that you aren’t thinking. Your brain’s cortex – the area responsible for rational thought, planning and decision making – can take a break. More primitive parts of your brain take over, freeing up the gray matter for other tasks. If basic functions required our full attention, most of our great ideas would never happen.

But, the same area that guides you home safely with minimal concentration also directs you to less beneficial destinations, such as eating fast food when you see a sign with a giant yellow “M.” Without thinking, and arguably without choosing, you pull your car into the drive thru, all the while anticipating the delicious salt and fat that will hit your tongue in just a few minutes. Your brain is completing the loop, reacting to a reminder so it can get a reward.

The Bolingbrook Raiders (2-2) looked to keep their win streak alive on Friday night as they went up against rival Lincoln-Way East (3-1).

The Raiders started out strong in the first half, but the second half was a different story.

Injuries plagued Bolingbrook as five players would go down during the course of the game.

“Injuries decimated us.” said Bolingbrook head coach John Ivlow “We don’t have that kind of depth to sustain the level of play that we need to play.”

The Raiders took a 16-7 lead early in the first half, but that changed after the break.

The Griffins would rally and score 34 straight points and come out of Raider Stadium victorious 41-23.

Raider quarterback Anthony Vespo had a good first half going 9-for-13 for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

The game changing moment in the game was a 35 yard punt return late in the third by Nick Zelenika of the Griffins to make the score 20-16 and the Griffins would never look back.

The Lincoln-Way receivers played a big part in the comeback as Zelenika had 7 receptions for 70 yards on the night and Jeremy Nelson added 11 receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The final score didn’t reflect how well the Bolingbrook defense actually played.

Jeremy Grainger had a pair interceptions on the night.

The defense combined for 28 total tackles in the first half, four of them for losses.

The Raider D also added a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Spartans look to keep up hard work this season

Despite a loss to Plainfield South to open the Southwest Prairie Conference season, there were positives for Romeoville to take away from the game.

The Spartans fought toe-to-toe with the Cougars in the first set, leading 24-22 before falling 2725.

In the second set, the Spartans fell behind 6-0 and 12-3 before

battling back and got within three at 23-20 before falling.

“It shows that the girls are fighters,” Romeoville coach Sara Olszta said. “We wish we would have started better, but the girls not giving up, I commend them for that. We just have to get a better start.”

A problem early in the season and in the loss to Plainfield South is the serving for the Spartans.

It is something they will need to work on going forward.

“I think our biggest need of improvement is our serving,” Olszta said. “We missed a lot of serves tonight. Once we do that, our momentum goes down a little bit and it impacts our serve receive a little bit. We have some adjustments to make, but I’m excited for the rest of the season.”

Romeoville has also been fighting injuries already early in the season, including a hitter for the season.

“We have been resilient,” Olszta said. “We’ve had some injuries that we have had to overcome. We have made a lot of adjustments around that and it is kind of like a beginning state for us to see who

fits where.”

Some players they do have healthy include a pair of solid senior hitters in Payton Koranda and Lyric Miles, who led the Spartans with seven and six kills, respectively, against South.

“It is nice to have two really strong people at the pin,” Olszta said. “We’re still working on our middles and trying to capitalize more. They are moving around more this year, we just have to get them more involved.”

It is also a senior-laden squad, which should benefit them as the season moves along.

“We are very heavy on seniors, which is good,” Olszta said. “I look forward working with them and moving forward together.”

With a smaller team, Olszta hopes the team gets a little scrappier going forward.

“We have to be a little scrappier,” she said. “We don’t have the height working to our advantage, so we have to be a little bit scrappier when the ball clears our block. I just want us to keep improving as a team.

The girls have definitely gelled together better this year, we just need to keep working hard.”

Truex wins Chase opener at Chicagoland

Tires were both a plus and a minus for Martin Truex Jr. Sunday en route to winning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, the first race in The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The win was his first victory in 11 Sprint Cup starts in Chicago and his third win of the season. Truex had previously won only three times in his career.

“Without a doubt it’s the best team I’ve ever had, it’s the best position I’ve ever been in. I really feel like we have what it takes to win this championship,” Truex said. “I felt like we had the same thing last year, but we didn’t have the racecars.

We didn’t have the speed we have now. That’s really taken us to another level. There’s been years, a few years, where I should have won multiple races, but I’ve never been in a position where I feel like we can go anywhere and win. Right now I feel like any racetrack, any weekend, anywhere in the country we can win. It’s just so much fun to go to the racetrack and have that feeling, have that much confidence in your team and what you’re doing. Having that much confidence in yourself as a driver is the ultimate goal.

“So it feels so good. I’m so proud of everyone and thankful. We have two weeks now to just try to keep the momentum going. We have no pressure on us. Hopefully we’ll be

able to get a couple more trophies and then get ready for round two.”

With the win, Truex secured his position in the second round of The Chase and now leads the point standings by one over Brad Keselowski.

“We did what we came here to do. That always feels good when you accomplish your goals,” Truex said. “We had a good weekend here with our Furniture Row Toyota.

[We] Worked really hard on our car throughout practice and on race runs. [We] Tried some new stuff this weekend and really felt like throughout the weekend we were getting the car feeling really good for race trim.

“It was a good weekend for us.

Really, today was a great day for us on the racetrack. We had to overcome some adversity obviously. That was tough. But [I am] really proud of our team for everybody sticking together, everybody keeping their heads down and never quitting till it was over. Today was obviously a big win for us. I am just excited for everybody. I mean, this is what we came here to do. It was cool to be able to put it out there and make it happen.”

Truex was trailing Chase Elliott by more than a second with five laps to go when Michael McDowell’s shredded right front tire forced the caution. The leaders pitted, leaving Truex fourth and Elliott fifth on the race’s final restart after Ryan Blaney, Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards stayed out.

Truex made a three-wide pass to

the outside going into turn one as the green came out and took the lead.

“Getting that fourth position on the outside I think was the key to winning,” Truex said. “Making the move to the outside was just what I was presented with. That was the only move I could make. Fortunately we were able to make it work.

“I want to say I feel for Chase. I know what he’s going through. He did a great job. I wasn’t going to catch him. I was catching him, but I was not catching him enough to pass him in five more laps. He did a good job and they were really fast today. We had to come from behind.”

Earlier in the race, Truex had spent time a lap down. He got his lap back on a free pass and made his way through the field and was in position for the win when opportunity struck.

“The mindset was, All right, this isn’t good, this is bad,” he said. “I really wish this didn’t happen, but it did. How are we going to overcome it? That’s all you can do at that point in time is say, Okay, where are we at? Where is the leader? What do I need to do? Cole kept me updated on who the leader was, who was a lap down, where I had to get to. Just kept my pushing, just kept my head down, kept digging. Eventually got back on the lead lap. Then the challenge was, How are we going to get up through traffic? It wasn’t easy to pass out there. But our car was

truex | from page 13 really good on the long runs. That’s where we were able to make time. It was trying to be patient on the short runs, on the restarts, try to keep my tires under me, and wait for those guys to start fading, then make my move. That’s what I did all day long and it worked out.”

Getting the win not only locks Truex into the second part of the Chase, it gives him a piece of mind for a few weeks.

“I think really all it means is that we’re guaranteed to make the second round, and the next two weeks we don’t have to worry about flat tires or somebody running into us and wrecking us, getting caught by a caution when you’re

We don’t have to worry about the things that we can’t control,” he said. “That’s what gives you the most anxiety in these situations when you’re in the Chase and you have three-round eliminations. So we don’t have to deal with that for two weeks. All we have to focus on is going to the racetrack and trying to continue to do a great job and win some more races. So that’s our goal right now.”

Along with a spot in the second part of the Chase, the win also earned Truex a cartoon-based trophy featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – one that he had plans for right away.

“I think I’m going to put that trophy in my shop because we have like a little store set up in there at

Martin Truex Jr. Motorsports. We have a lot of family and kids come by. It will be cool to set it up in the opening and get their picture taken with it,” he said. “That’s what I thought while I was standing out there and somebody asked me that.

We’re going to do that for sure.”

Own the debt on your commercial properties If I were in your shoes, I’d go ahead and get the house paid off first Dear Dave, My husband and I own three commercial buildings in Boise, Idaho, that are leased out longterm. We owe about $500,000 on one and $400,000 on each of the others, and they earn $190,000.

The only other debt we have is a small amount left on our mortgage.

I know you don’t like debt, but is it OK to owe on commercial properties that are making good money?

Dawn Dear Dawn, I own several commercial buildings, and I don’t owe a dime on any of them. So, I can’t tell you

that I think it’s OK to have debt on commercial buildings. I believe the best plan for building wealth is to become debt-free.

Now, from the situation you’ve described, that doesn’t necessarily mean you guys should be in panic mode and start selling everything in sight.

But, I do think that you should systematically work your way out from under these debts over the next few years.

If I were in your shoes, I’d go ahead and get the house paid off first.

Then, I’d take a look at these commercial properties, and begin working the debt snowball on them.

Start throwing as much money as you can at the smallest debt, while making minimum payments on the other two.

When you get it paid off, roll that amount over — along with every dime you can dig up —and attack the second largest one.

The car is financed through her mom, and her dad agreed to send us half of the payment each month.

We owe $7,700 on the car, and we have enough cash right now to pay off the car in full with plenty left over.

Should we do this, even though her dad is making $100 of the payment each month?

Dustin Dear Dustin, If her father had agreed to send you guys $100 each month, ask him to continue doing that for the duration of the agreement.

Then, you guys pay off the car now with your cash. There’s nothing dishonest about this, as long as you explain the plan to her

parents and they’re agreeable.

The reason for this approach is two-fold: it gets the debt paid off, and then you can get the car put in your name.

Plus, a situation like this represents drama just looking for a place to happen, if it hasn’t already.

Family relationships take on a weird vibe when money has been loaned and borrowed.

If they’re not agreeable to the idea, that’s OK. All you can do is ask.

But one way or another, I’d be out of this situation before the sun goes down!

Handle with care Habits are embedded, but they are also fragile. It only takes a slight change to a routine for them to be reshaped, as journalist Charles Duhigg described in his 2009 book “The Power of Habit.” Imagine that all of the fast food places you pass were tucked far off the road, out of sight. The environmental reminders would be gone, thus making the reaction less likely.

Take the example of television.

With television, much of the reward comes courtesy of our remote controls, which provide ultimate control and instant gratification.

If you gave your remote to a friend to hold onto, you would still watch some TV. But chances are, the habit loop would start to break down as the rewards associated with watching were minimized by not having a remote.

Your brain will naturally become frustrated when it doesn’t get the instant reward, and we can even become depressed by not having our cravings satisfied.

However, if we can insert a new reaction in place of TV watching, one that produces its own rewards, a new habit loop will spring up.

The new reaction might be reaching for a book or doing some light exercise in your living room.

Of course, altering certain habit loops takes a significant amount of time, effort and support. Changing deeply rewarding reactions such as smoking, using drugs or binge eating require focus and belief.

None of this is to say that creating new habits is easy. In fact, your old brain will fight tooth-and-nail to return to the old loop, knowing it will produce the desired reward.

But, a lot of things in life that are worthwhile aren’t easy. And if that means giving away your remote, then the price seems worth the payoff.
