Families and friends lined the streets along Belmont Drive, winding through the Hampton Park neighborhood, with hundreds of onlookers out to cheer the parade walkers.

This year’s theme, the Wild Wild West,

brought out the cowboy and cowgirl in most. Horses, wagons and quite a few cowboy hats were seen strutting their stuff.

The next recreation department event is Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center (55 Phelps Ave.) for the last Cruisin’ the Square Car and Bike Show of 2017.

This event features a classic car and bike show, live music by Forget Hannah, kids activities, and food and beverages.

Dog Haus to open in Romeoville Dog Haus one of the fastest growing food concepts in the United States Dog Haus, the Pasadena, Cal.based gourmet hot dog, sausage and burger concept restaurant submitted development plans for a Romeoville location.

The first business seeking to locate at the northwest corner of Renwick and Weber roads has been announced by American Development Partners Dog Haus.

“It is encouraging to see additional restaurant opportunities along the Weber Road corridor,” said Mayor John Noak. “There are

two lots remaining at this intersection.

With the high traffic volume and the anticipated popularity of the Dog Haus, we anticipate the two remaining lots to develop quickly.”

American Development Partners announced in 2016 the construction of more than 300 new Dog Haus franchise locations in 12 states over the next seven years, making it one of the fastest growing food concepts in the United States.

Dog Haus was founded by partners Hagop Giragossian, Quasim Riaz and Andre Vener, three friends who share a passion for creativity, quality and commitment to community. The first Dog Haus opened in Pasadena in 2010.

Work continues on Weber Road/I55 Interchange

Paving the way for the future of the Weber Road and I55 Interchange, the village of Romeoville continues to move pieces of the project forward.

For several years, a plan has been in place to reconfigure the interchange that is considered the busiest in Will County, with the Illinois Department of Transportation at the helm of the project.

While bidding for the project was expected in March, due to the influx of the state budget,

progress hasn’t been seen.

However, the huge undertaking requires a variety of elements including clarifying the right of way, easement issues and the drawing of property lines.

Recently, in connection with the ongoing IDOT project to reconstruct the interchange at Weber Road and I-55, IDOT has requested Romeoville to convey by warranty deed a portion of property near Weber Road and Lakeview Road.

Village Attorney Rich Vogel said in working a couple of years with IDOT on this project, the village had taken own-

ership of two retention ponds at Windham business park and had some difficulty in finding the easements of the ponds .

The village has been able to review them and can now move forward.

“Amazing how many little pieces are involved with this project,” said Mayor John Noak. “At least we are tweaking all the final projects on our end.”

According to Noak, the State bid for the project had to be moved to November meaning any progress or construction will not begin until the spring, “if we are lucky,” he said .

Romeoville creating new licensing for raffles Application must be filled out and a background check is required

As the popularity of raffles are driving upward in communities throughout the area, municipalities are expected to establish a licensing system.

In Romeoville, a number of Queen of Hearts raffles alone have outgrown establishments draw-

ing crowds for prize dollars in the thousands. The game is a progressive raffle that continues if there is not a winner, thus sweetening the pot each week. Earlier this month, in an almost unheard of jackpot, a raffle in Morris, reached a $1 million.

“In order for groups to have protection of a license the village needs to develop an ordinance to allow charitable nonprofits to

conduct raffles for the benefit and purposes of the organization,” said Village Attorney Rich Vogel.

Following a standard licensing system set by the Illinois Raffle Act, the village of Romeoville has recently passed an ordinance outlining such a system requiring organizations to obtain a license based on the size of the raffle.

The licensing structure allows for three classes. Class A includes merchandise other than cash up to $1,000 in total prizes and $10,000 in cash and may conduct one raffle per month. Class B al-

lows for four raffles per month in smaller cash amounts with a total aggregate of $5,000. Class C is a catch all, that offers an unlimited category though a Class C licensee can only conduct one raffle at a time.

Eligibility for raffle licenses will only be issued to bona fide religious charitable, labor, business, fraternal, educational or veterans’ organizations which operate without a profit to their members and which have been in existence continuously for a period of five years.

“This puts us on the books and keeps us in compliance with the State,” said Mayor John Noak. “If we need to review at some point and create a new process we will be more than happy to accommodate those who need it.”

Vogel said the process is similar to that the village has instituted for other licenses; an application must be filled out and a background check is required.

A license fee of $25 will be charged for Class A and B; and a fee of $50 for Class C.

Investors cautioned about for hurricane scams ‘Beware of any promoter promising quick and high returns on your investments’

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is cautioning investors to watch out for opportunistic investment scams in the wake of widespread damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“Natural disasters like this one have many stories which highlight the best in people as neighbors help neighbors, but

these situations can also bring out the worst in people, particularly those seeking to profit from the misfortune of others,” said White. “Illinois residents should be aware of companies and individuals offering investments involving the aftermath of these hurricanes.”

White, who runs the Illinois Securities Department which regulates investment advisors and securities brokers, urged investors to watch for hurri-

cane-related scams, including unsolicited email, social media messages, or telephone calls promoting investment pools or bonds to help storm victims, water-removal or purification technologies, electricity-gener-

ating devices and distressed real estate remediation programs.

“Beware of any promoter promising quick and high returns on your investments,” White said. “Con-artists may claim that their companies have government contracts to help with the clean up or rebuilding effort. Investors should always research the companies and salespersons before investing.”

White’s Securities Department offered three tips to help investors avoid disaster-related scams: Delete unsolicited emails or social media messages and hang up on aggressive cold callers

promoting hurricane-related investments, especially those from small companies touting unproven or new technologies or products.

Use common sense. Claims of guaranteed returns or low/no investment risk are classic red flags. Every investment involves some degree of risk.

Do your homework. Contact the Secretary of State’s Securities Department to check that both the seller and investment are licensed and registered. If not, they may be operating illegally.

Skoff teacher’s act of compassion is an annual tradition In 2008, Skoff Elementary School teacher Angela Parent was told something a bit distressing by one of her 2nd grade students. The student said she didn’t like her birthday because she was born on September 11. Parent began thinking of how students in her class could honor a solemn day in American history, but at the same time express hope for the future.

This year, on Sept. 11 Parent and her third grade class conducted the 10th Annual Balloon Lift Off. Each year, Parent and her students release red, white, and blue balloons to, in her words, “acknowledge Patriot’s Day, and also bring hope and light to a very sad subject.”

Parent sees September 11 as a teachable moment in her classroom. “While we discussed all the heroes and patriots of that day, we also discuss our hope for a great future,” Parent explained. “I tell the kids the world is already better because they are here and they were born after 9-11. The kids and I hope that when the balloons are lifted, others around will see the balloons, and will be reminded of the heroes of 9-11, the innocent lives that were lost, and people will also be reminded to treat others with kindness.“

Class of Kelly Olen are very practical thinkers. Obviously, there is a huge need in Texas for supplies such as food, water, clothing, etc. to provide relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. However, can you imagine being a kid living in a shelter while displaced from your home with nothing to do while the grown-ups work on solving the most pressing issues?

To provide some help, Olen’s students collected kid-friendly items like games, puzzles, and art supplies and put them into colorful “Shelter Bags” to share with kids in Texas shelters. Sometimes it takes a kid to think like a kid.

Turkey’s choice: Past or future Controversial election last April resulted in just over 51 percent of voters approving constitutional reforms

ISTANBUL - Coming from the airport into this city of about 15 million people and 5 million cars, as my driver describes it, I pass ancient Roman ruins and blocks of upscale shops; an old hotel where Agatha Christie penned “Murder on the Orient Express,” smoke shops and modest restaurants, and luxury car dealers. It is a metaphor for the choices Turks are being forced to make under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: forward to a better future and a recapture of their secular state, or back to a nostalgic past when Islam was the official religion of the Ottoman Empire.

Recent waves of terrorist attacks throughout the country have raised security levels. My car was stopped and given a cursory search before being allowed to proceed to the hotel entrance where I was then required to pass through a metal detector and have my hand luggage scanned before approaching the registration desk.

Here, where the Bosphorus Strait divides Europe from Asia, President Erdogan seems bent on imposing his brand of radical Islam on what has for decades been a nation ruled by secular leaders.

It was the late president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who helped establish the Republic of Turkey, modeled on Western governments and their belief in church-

state separation.

Erdogan, it appears, hears more than the Muslim call to prayer. It’s as though he hears a “call” to tear down the wall separating mosque and state and, writes the Christian Science Monitor, restore Turkey to “its historical Ottoman influence.”

The controversial election last April resulted in just over 51 percent of voters approving constitutional reforms, which eliminates the office of prime minister and allows Erdogan to possibly hold onto power for years to come.

There is still disagreement over whether Erdogan and his party cheated in order to win.

In addition to questions about Turkey’s future role in NATO, how would a Turkish Islamic state change the fight against “radical Islamic terrorism,” as President Trump called it until recently when that label seems to have disappeared from his rhetoric?

An American citizen who has lived and worked in Turkey for some time, but wishes to remain anonymous for fear that his comments might bring him harm, tells me that Turks who have the resources to leave the country are getting out. He says there has been an upsurge in property purchases in the U.S., particularly in Florida.

An August 2016 article in The Wall Street Journal reported: “luxury-condo developers are seeing about 5 percent of preconstruction inventory sold to buyers from Turkey.”

My American friend says there is “no convincing political opposition” in Turkey at the moment. “Clerics no longer define Islam, Erdogan does.”

In 2004, Erdogan participated in a

panel at The Academy of Achievement in Chicago. Asked about Islamic terrorism, he responded: “Turkey is not a country where moderate Islam prevails.

This expression is wrong. The word Islam is uninflected, it is only Islam.”

Others would disagree, so who gets to decide? That is a question debated throughout the Islamic and non-Islamic world. Who SHOULD decide is the larger question. In Turkey, Erdogan has set himself up as the lone decider.

Further contributing to instability in Turkey is a referendum on independence scheduled for September 25 by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Daniel Pipes, who heads the Middle East Forum, says while he supports Kurdish independence and a “single, grand Kurdish state, I see the referendum as a danger to all concerned by further unsettling a highly unstable region, perhaps provoking any of Turkish, Iranian, or Iraqi central government invasions of the KRG, perhaps leading to a confrontation between U.S. and Russian forces.”

As if we don’t already have enough to worry about.

One of Turkey’s main exports in addition to Turkish towels, the Turkish bath and Turkish coffee is the delicious confection known as Rahadlakum, or Turkish Delight.

Unfortunately, with their prospects declining, many Turks today worry that their future may not be anything in which they can take delight.

GAME Second half, injury dooms Raiders in loss to Homewood-Flossmoor

Bolingbrook opened its showdown against Homewood-Flossmoor Friday night with a delay of game penalty.

In the end, what it needed was a way to delay the second half.

Leading 20-13 at intermission on H-F’s homecoming night, the Raiders got steamrolled by the state’s third-ranked Class 8A team.

The Vikings reeled off 35 unchallenged points after halftime for a 48-20 win.

But this is week 4 of the season, not week 11, when the Raiders and Vikings might meet again in the Class 8A playoffs. The Raiders had the upper hand until an injury and the Vikings’ big-play attack combined to reverse the tide.

“They did what they do so well,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow of the Vikings. “They see something and they hit it. We play kind of a high-risk defense, and they ex-

ploited it.”

No one exploited it more than HF’s Justin Hall, who rolled up more than 300 all-purpose yards in the win and scored four second-half touchdowns to swamp the Raiders’ upset bid. The back-breaker was an 81-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Dominick Jones that broke a 20-20 tie in the third quarter and put the Raiders on their heels for good.

Bolingbrook junior running back Anthony Williams Jr., who had scored two first-half touchdowns, went down with a shoulder injury on the Raiders’ first possession of the second half.

That meant the visitors had lost a potent counterbalance to quarterback Anthony Vespo’s strong arm.

With Williams sidelined and the Raiders playing from behind, the Vikings defense sacked Vespo four times in the second half to keep any thoughts of a comeback SEE GAME PAGE 19

Truex wins at Chicagoland

After winning the the regular season title, Martin Truex Jr. didn’t waste any time punching his ticket to the second round of the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup playoffs in Sunday’s Tales of the Turtles 400, the Playoff opener at Chicagoland Speedway.

At was Truex’s fifth victory of the season and second-straight in Joliet.

“Definitely excited to be able to come to the first round of the Playoffs this year and cap it off with a win,” Truex said. “(I am) Proud of my team. It was not an easy day by any means. We had the speeding penalty, the issue with the lug nuts on the pit stop. Think we went from last to third in 80 some laps in stage two. That felt pretty good.

“Then honestly, just kept tweaking our car all day long. It was not where we wanted it at the start of the race. Probably through the first 50 or 80 laps, we were off a little bit, just kept getting it better and better.

I thought by the last hundred laps of the race, it was really, really good.

Martin Truex Jr. celebrates by getting slimed in Victory Lane after winning the Tales of the Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway Sunday in Joliet.

The win this year came with a bit of a new twist, as race sponsor Nickelodeon dumped slime on Truex in Victory Lane.

“I just spent about five minutes in the bathroom washing my hands and face trying to get all the green stuff off,” Truex said after the race. “I remember watching Nickelodeon as a kid, watching that show where it was like an obstacle course thing, they would get slimed all the

time. I thought it was hilarious. It’s a lot funnier to watch people get slimed than it is to get slimed. It’s a lot slimier than I expected. It was definitely worth it to get that after the race today. Thanks to Nickelodeon.”

Help senior drivers maintain independence Losing the ability to safely operate an automobile can greatly reduce a person’s independence As men and women age, various factors may affect their ability to drive. In addition to issues with memory, seniors may have failing eyesight and physical limitations, and their reaction time may slow down. In such instances, seniors’ ability to safely operate a motor vehicle may be questioned.

Age alone is not a reliable measure of driving ability, but many of the issues that affect one’s ability to safely drive a vehicle tend to appear as men and women near their golden years.

Losing the ability to safely operate an automobile can greatly reduce a person’s independence.

That is why periodic driver evaluations may be met with some reluctance.

Aging men and women who don’t want to avoid potential conflicts with concerned family members can take their own steps to ensure they maintain their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

SCHEDULE A DRIVING SAFETY EVALUATION When drivers’ abilities to operate a motor vehicle become suspect, a thorough evaluation should be scheduled. The evaluation should not be handled by a family physician or family member, but by an unbiased third party like a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist.

This is a therapist who has special certification to assist people with disabilities, including older adults, with driving. They can help individuals with adaptive equipment or techniques if driving issues stem from something that can be addressed.

FIGURE OUT IF THE CAR “FITS” THE INDIVIDUAL A program called CarFit can help drivers assess if their car is suited to their abilities. A team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with participants to ensure their vehicles are equipped for maximum safety and comfort.

A properly adjusted vehicle is as important as one’s cognitive and physical abilities. Adjustments can include mirror placement, good foot positioning and sitting at the

proper distance from the steering wheel. People can learn about an upcoming event at www.car-fit.org.

TAKE A DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE Driver improvement courses are provided by various organizations, including some insurance compa-

nies. AARP also has a Driver Safety Course to lower the risk of traffic violations, collisions and injuries.

Completion of these courses can help drivers enhance their abilities behind the wheel and may result in lower premiums for mature drivers.

KEEP THE MIND AND BODY FIT Regular exercise and a healthy diet can be assets for mature drivers. Mental fitness techniques and brain exercises can improve reaction time, while aerobic and strength-training workouts can keep the body in shape.

Should I keep a separate account for this business, or just roll it into our regular checking account?

SYDNEY DEAR SYDNEY, It’s very important to have a separate account, or accounts, for small businesses for two reasons.

One, it’s a huge help when it comes to taxes and tax season. It will also give you a much clearer picture of how your business is actually doing. Whether you’re talking about revenue or tracking expenses, it will give you an easy-to-read report card.

Even if the business is small and is going to stay small, I would want to know – almost as an intellectual exercise – which of my products were winning in the marketplace.

This would help you concentrate on the ones that are making you money, and allow you to focus less on the ones that aren’t doing so well.
