Drake surprises local girl with hospital visit 11-year-old fan gets both of her birthday wishes one week apart

Sophia Sanchez had two wishes during her birthday week.

One came true when she was surprised by Drake, the 31-yearold Canadian superstar, stopped in to surprise the 11-year-old at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

Just a week after meeting the entertainer, Sophia learned her other wish had come true — she is getting a new heart.

Sophia was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that often leads to heart failure and a need for heart transplantation in order to survive.

She received Drakes attention after she engaged in the “Kiki Challenge” which is a choreographed dance to Drakes song, “In My Feelings.”

Drake was in Chicago performing at the United Center on tour, when the little girl sparked his attention so much so that he stopped by for a visit.

“When I first saw him I screamed, “Oh my God” and I wasn’t sure if it was real or fake,” Sophia said.

Sophia, who was a normal healthy girl that played softball, basketball and cheered, until she her health declined six weeks prior to going into the hospital. “[Sophia’s] coloring was really gray, she had no energy, I had to carry her around from doctor to doctor and she was under care of a cardiologist,” said Natalie Sanchez, Sophia’s mom.

At first, doctors could not figure out what was wrong with Sophia, but Natalie knew they could not give up and needed to find a prognosis.

“We went to a bunch of different specialist, and I took her to emergency room begged for more tests and after we found out [what the problem was], they transferred us to Hope Hospital,” Natalie said.

With Sophia’s condition, she

had to be transferred to Lurie Hospital for proper care.

“Lurie had the VAD (ventricular assists device) and heart transplant we needed,” Natalie said.

Natalie said that she knows what the ramifications could have been if they couldn’t get Sophia to Lurie Hospital, and she is thankful for her progress up to this point.

“We feel blessed we made it here on time because I could of lost my daughter,” Natalie said. “[Sophia] had an open heart surgery about four weeks ago, and it was up and down for the first few weeks, but now she’s getting her energy back and feeling like herself again.”

Sophia is dependent on a machine that pumps her heart for her, and she is waited for a new heart. “[Sophia] has been on this list since July 11,” Natalie said.

For an 11-year-old that has been stuck inside of a hospital all summer seeing her friends enjoying the warm weather, Drakes visit inspired her to keep pushing forward.

“It’s been upsetting [being in the hospital] this summer when I had a lot of fun things planned with my friends,” Sophia said.

“When I saw Drake though, I

thought it was a miracle, and he told me to keep fighting and stay strong.”

Not only did Drake have great words of wisdom, but he also promised he would bring Sophia on stage at one of his concerts while singing a song for her, and he told her that they will remain in contact in the future.

Even though being at a hospital for a long time isn’t easy for anyone, Sophia and Natalie said they have enjoyed the care they have received so far from Lurie.

“Lurie has been an amazing hospital to us,” Natalie said.

“We feel we’re in the best place, everyone’s very nice and they make it the most fun as possible for Sophia that they can.”

Lurie showed care for Sophia by letting her have her birthday party with 20 people invited to increase her mood.

Weber Road renovation to begin October 1 IDOT addresses residents at Chamber of Commerce event

Several local residents gathered around from hear Randy Blankenhorn, Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation, speak about the I-55 Weber Road upcoming project.

The event was co-sponsored by the Bolingbrook and Romeoville Chambers of Commerce.

This projects renovation will begin October 1 of this year where a lane will be added in each direction for less traffic flow, and the interchange will be rebuilt into a diverging diamond interchange.

“The diamond interchange is much more efficient, much safer and removes traffic a lot better,” Blankenhorn said.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation website, there will be a 91 percent delay reduction in the morning going northbound on Weber, 39 percent going southbound, 61 percent going northbound in the afternoon and 42 percent going southbound.

The bridges will also be constructed in two phases according to the website, with stage one

that will be constructing the west bridge and maintaining traffic on the existing bridge, while stage two will include shifting all traffic onto the new west bridge and redecking the east bridge.

Lane closures will be in effect so pavement for the interim can be built to accommodate traffic.

“In the meantime, temporary traffic signals and pavement will be installed on the east side of Weber Road,” said Guy Tridgell, Director of Communications at Illinois Department of Transportation. “Once that is complete, the full stage will then be taken place.”

With this project coming to fruition, it is taking place to mitigate the congestion problem at the interchange.

As of now, cars and trucks have been backed up onto I-55 which is causing more of a safety problem for travelers.

“Our main goal is to alleviate the most amount of accidents we can,” Blankenhorn said. “If we make this congestion problem go away, then the reoccurring accidents problem should take care of themselves.”

Even though this project officially starts on October 1, Blankenhorn said that the utility move-

ment and preconstruction work has already been taken place.

Delays will be eminent throughout the process according to Tridgell, but the goal is to maintain two lanes of traffic so there can be an active work zone for the next couple of years.

In total, the renovation is estimated to take two full construc-

tion seasons that includes all of 2019, 2020 and the end goal being ready by 2021.

“This project will cost about 68 million [dollars],” Tridgell said.

Blankenhorn said even though the construction will be a little messy, there’s a problem Romeoville and Bolingbrook need to address and the people see it

and are excited about what the end result will be.

“This is going to open up Weber Road for further economic opportunity,” Blankenhorn said. “This has been and will be a difficult project but we’re excited about the feedback we’ve gotten so far and we know this will help a lot of people in the long run.”

Black Hawk, proud leader of Sac and Fox tribe of Rock River Valley CHUCK SWEENY ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR First, let’s get his name straight. It was Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak. In English, he was Black Hawk, war chief of the Sac and Fox tribe, who lived most of his life in the Rock River Valley in northern Illinois.

Black Hawk was born in 1767 in Saukenuk, a Sac and Fox village along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois. He built his reputation as a war fighter leading his tribe in skirmishes against the Osage tribe.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a new enemy appeared — Americans, relentlessly moving west from the eastern states, claiming the land for themselves as they went, building homes and villages and fencing off the fields.

The U.S. Army and state militias accompanied the settlers and protected them against the people who had been there for thousands of years. Treaty after treaty was made between the native people and the U.S. government, and they were regularly broken.

One of those documents was the Treaty of 1804, signed in St. Louis by representatives of the Sac and Fox tribe and U.S. officials. Black Hawk, who had not been at the signing, thought the treaty merely ceded some of the tribe’s ancestral hunting grounds to the American settlers.

But the Sac and Fox had been snookered. Actually, the treaty required the Sac and Fox to vanish forever from 50 million acres, their entire homeland east of the Mississippi River.

Black Hawk was so angered that he allied with the great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh to fight alongside the British in the War of 1812, which the Americans started in an attempt to take over Canada. The war ended in a draw in 1815. Black Hawk became increasingly agitated as white settlers streamed into his northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin homeland, protected as always by militia and U.S. troops. However, he wasn’t popular among all of his tribe’s men and women.

Most Sac and Fox had resettled in Iowa by 1830 under the leadership of the moderate Chief Keokuk, who was more of a politician than a warrior. He favored

negotiating with the U.S. rather than fighting what he knew was a superior force.

In early 1832, Black Hawk decided to return to Illinois to resettle in the Sac and Fox homeland once again. Because about 160,000 whites now lived there, skirmishes broke out, prompting calls by the fearful Americans to rid the area of “Indians.”

In April 1832, Black Hawk “led some 1,000 Sac and Fox and Kickapoo men, women and children, including about 500 warriors, across the Mississippi River to reclaim land in Illinois that tribal spokesmen had surrendered to the U.S. in 1804,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

They weren’t seeking war. In fact, Black Hawk, now 65, hoped to enjoy a peaceful retirement in Illinois. After the cold, hard winter of 1831-1832, they wanted to come back to their old grounds and plant corn where they knew it would yield a bountiful harvest.

Only about one-fifth of the Sac and Fox returned; most stayed in Iowa.

Illinois Gov. John Reynolds requested U.S. troops and called up the state militia, eventually assembled a force of 7,000 soldiers, both regulars and militia members, to fight the Sac and Fox. Meanwhile, throughout the spring and summer of 1832, Americans burned or otherwise destroyed Sac and Fox fields.

One of the sorriest battles in the war took place near what today is Stillman Valley, Illinois. Maj. Isaac Stillman and 275 men were pursuing Black Hawk’s warriors. Black Hawk could not persuade other tribes to join him, so he sent emissaries to Stillman to surrender. But the militiamen were drunk; they fired on the delegation and killed two warriors. Black Hawk planned an ambush in return. In the Battle of Stillman’s Run, 40 Sac and Fox warriors routed Stillman and his 275 men.

claimed about 70 U.S. troops and militiamen as well as settlers. An estimated 500 Sac and Fox were killed.

Among the Americans who took part in the battles were Abraham Lincoln, the future president of the U.S., and Jefferson Davis, the future president of the confederation of rebellious states that seceded from the U.S. in 1861.

As the war proceeded into the summer of 1832, the Americans pursued Black Hawk and his warriors into southern Wisconsin, defeating them finally in August at Bad Axe on the Mississippi River.

On Sept. 2, 1832, the Black Hawk War ended when U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott and Sac and Fox leaders signed a treaty forcing the tribe to cede 6 million acres of land west of the Mississippi River and 50 miles west of the river.

Black Hawk lived out the rest of his life in Iowa, dying near Des Moines in 1838.

He was 72.

In his autobiography, Black Hawk addressed his conquerors, saying: “May the Great Spirit shed light on your path, so that you may never experience the humility that the power of the American government has reduced me to. This is the wish of a man who, in his native forests, was once as proud and bold as yourself.”

The chief is honored in a 40-foot statue by Lorado Taft, above the bluffs of the Rock River at Oregon, Illinois. Although he didn’t specifically call the statue “Black Hawk,” that’s what it’s commonly called.

Glasgow to host Child Sex Trafficking Summit Summit 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 7 at the Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St., in downtown Joliet JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow will host a Child Sex Trafficking Summit in September during which Will County community leaders will discuss steps already being taken to protect our children and outline future strategies to end this horrific exploitation.

The summit, which the State’s Attorney is hosting in conjunction with the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and the National Criminal Justice Training Center, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 7 at the Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St., in downtown Joliet.

The summit is designed for law enforcement officials, educators, business and industry leaders, prosecutors, child welfare advocates/DCFS, probation professionals, victim services advocates, and elected officials.

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995 to improve investigations into child sexual abuse. Children who have been sexually abused come to the Center

to provide recorded statements to specially trained and compassionate forensic interviewers. The Center also provides counseling as well as referrals to other medical and social services so the healing process for these vulnerable victims can begin.

“The Children’s Advocacy Center has been working for more than two decades to provide hope, healing, and justice for abused children,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “Through this summit, we are expanding our efforts to end the systematic sexual exploitation of our children and remove dangerous child predators from our community.”

As part of this initiative, State’s Attorney Glasgow and the Children’s Advocacy Center have formed a Will County Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Coalition.

The State’s Attorney also has designated a specialized Child Sexual Exploitation Advocate to provide case management support and advocacy to youths who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation.

The State’s Attorney also implemented a high technology Crimes Against Children Unit in 2012 to track and prosecute predators who trade child pornography online.

Research has documented disturbing links between those who exploit children by collecting and trading sexually abusive images and those who are hands-on abusers.

The unit has uncovered a number of cases involving defendants who were actually producing child pornography and who were hands-on abusers. The team’s critical work has enabled the Children’s Advo-

Lipinski Announces Grant for Lockport Township Fire Protection District District has been awarded an over $329 thousand grant through the Department of Homeland Security Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has announced that the Lockport Township Fire Protection District has been awarded an over $329 thousand grant through the Department of Homeland Security for new protective breathing apparatuses.

“Federal funding is needed to meet the increased demands being placed on our nation’s first

responders,” said Rep. Lipinski.

“This grant will allow the Lockport Township Fire Protection District to purchase much needed new equipment. In doing so, they will be able to continue to build upon their already impressive record of service.”

“Our current breathing apparatus units are 15 plus years old and at the end of their service life,” stated Lockport Township Fire Protection District Chief Paul Hertzmann. “There have been dramatic improvements to this product over the last few years and these new units will provide our firefighters with the latest innovations to keep them safe during emergency events.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program provides needed federal funds to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations in order to improve the response capabilities of our nation’s first responders and the safety of our communities.

‘Drive Sober’ Labor Day campaign in full swing The Will County Sheriff’s Office is announcing that it has begun its traffic safety campaign focusing on drunk, unbuckled and distracted drivers.

The high-visibility crackdown began August 20th and will run through the Labor Day weekend until September 4th.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Illinois State Police and other local law enforcement agencies to increase this effort. Will County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Lakomiak stated, “This isn’t about writing tickets or making arrests. This is about saving lives

and helping people realize impaired driving can be fatal. It’s a matter of life or death.”

This Labor Day weekend, remember to designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family drive drunk. Buckle up and put your cell phone away while driving! Help keep our roads safe!

ROLL Bolingbrook wins opener over Downers Grove South in impressive fashion

Bolingbrook opened the season with a resounding win, blanking Downers Grove South 35-0 to kick off the IHSA football season.

South started the game off seemingly on the right foot, holding the ball the majority of the first quarter behind the running of Devean Washington (and Jayden Lambert, but could not get on the scoreboard.

“They had that ball for like seven minutes and you like to come in base and see what each other is doing,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow. “That is the thing with the first game. We didn’t know what they were going to do against us and I am assuming they didn’t know what we were going to be doing on offense. It’s a chess game in the

beginning.”

Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari knew the team has to take advantage of that first drive.

“It unraveled a little bit there,” Molinari said. “We are playing some guys both ways and I think you saw a little bit of the wear and tear there. I think our guys need to be honest with themselves as to where they are in their conditioning and what it is going to take to get this done.”

Bolingbrook opened the scoring one-minute into the second quarter on a seven-yard scamper from Michigan State recruit Anthony Williams, Jr. and never looked back.

Perruzzi named lacrosse coach Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced earlier this month that Joe Perruzzi has been hired as the first men’s lacrosse coach in Flyer history.

“Our intercollegiate athletic program will welcome our 23rd sport offering with the addition of men’s lacrosse starting competition in the 2019-2020 season,” Planek said. “I am glad to announce that Joe Perruzzi will be our inaugural head coach. His successful experience at the Division II level along with his energy level will serve us well as we begin to establish our lacrosse program at Lewis University.”

Lewis Senior Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing and Planning Ray Kennelly was equally as excited

about the new Flyer sport addition.

“The addition of men’s lacrosse, will enhance student life on campus as well as provide additional opportunities for intercollegiate athletic competition,” Kennelly said. “This will also help spread the Lewis name to new markets.”

Perruzzi comes to Lewis after spending the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. During his tenure with the Crusaders he helped guide them to a 38-13 record and back-to-back appearances in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship game. Perruzzi helped mentor 17 Conference Carolinas All-Conference selections, 10 United States In-

tercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-Americans and two USILA Scholar All-Americans.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join the Flyer family at Lewis University,” Perruzzi said. “I would like to thank Dr. (David) Livingston and Dr. (John) Planek for this exciting opportunity to begin the lacrosse program at Lewis University.

“From the moment I stepped on campus, I was blown away by the strength of the academics, the department’s commitment to athletics and integrity of the college community. I look forward to building this program from the ground up and competing at the highest level in the GLVC.” This past season he helped lead Belmont Abbey to a school

record 14 wins, the Conference of Carolina regular season and postseason championships and a Top 15 finish in both the USILA Coaches Poll (9th) and the Nike/ Lax Magazine Poll. Liam Osborne was the Conference Carolinas Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Perruzzi coached six All-Conference Carolinas selections, four USILA All-Americans and two USILA Scholar All-Americans.

The Crusaders ranked second in Division II in clearing percentage (90.9 percent), fifth in man down defense (81.8 percent) and ninth in scoring defense (7.94 goals against average).

In 2017, The Abbey established a 12-5 record and advanced to the Conference Carolinas Championship game for the first time since 2010. Adam Wiedemann

was chosen as the Conference Carolinas Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Perruzzi mentored six All-Conference Carolinas selections and four USILA All-Americans.

The Crusaders ranked first in Division II in clearing percentage (95.4 percent) and man down defense (82.9 percent) and were 10th in scoring defense (7.76 goals against average).

In his first season at The Abbey, the team set a then school record for wins (12) and winning percentage (.750). He coached five All-Conference Carolinas selections and helped Devin Cruz and Adam Weidemann to earn USILA All-America honors.

The Crusaders ranked 12th in the country with an 8.63 goalsagainst-average, while standing fifth nationally in caused turnovers (10.44 per game). Cruz led the nation individually in caused turnovers.

“I would like to thank Dr. Thierfelder, Stephen Miss and Chris Barrett for the last three seasons at Belmont Abbey College,” Perruzzi stated. “In this time, I was able to grow as a person and as a coach while being surrounded by so many outstanding co-workers and student-athletes. I am unbelievably grateful for my time at Belmont Abbey College and wouldn’t be where I am today without the tireless dedication and commitment of my studentathletes.”

Perruzzi came to Belmont Abbey following a stint as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan University. During that time, the Bishops had the best season is program history boasting an 18-1 record with an undefeated regular season and No. 3 national ranking in the USILA Division III coaches poll. Head Coach Mike Plantholt was the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the year and the Bishops were NCAC regular-season and tournament champions and NCAA Quarterfinalists. Perruzzi worked with the the defense, faceoff unit, goalies and ran the substitution box while coaching four USILA All-Americans and 13 All-NCAC All-Conference selections.

Alumni games Sept. 22 he Lewis University baseball program will host its Alumni Game and Golf Outing on Saturday, September 22nd, 2018.

The 12th Annual Lewis Baseball Golf Outing will be held at the Woodruff Golf Course in Joliet, Ill., at 9 a.m.

The cost golf is $115. The package includes greens fees, cart, hot dog or brat, chips and a beverage.

The price for all current Lewis students and employees will be $100.

Hole sponsorships are available for $115. Any or a special event contest (long drive, closest to pin, longest putt, etc.) can be sponsored. Places for the golf outing must be reserved by Monday, September 17, 2018.

The Alumni Game will also take place on Saturday, September 22nd at Brennan Field. Warm-ups and the home run derby will start at 3:30 p.m. First pitch of the game will be at 4:30 p.m. Last year’s Alumni Game saw over 40 former Flyer baseball players attend in what was an outstanding show of support.

There will be a social gathering at Stone City Saloon in Romeoville following the game.

Before joining the Kenyon staff, Perruzzi was an assistant coach at Community College of Baltimore County-Essex in Baltimore, Md. In his one season at Essex, the Knights were Region XX champions and reached the NJCAA Final Four. Perruzzi assisted with the defense, ran the substitution box and was head of strength and conditioning for the lacrosse program while coaching 3 NJCAA All-Americans and 8 Region XX all-region selections.

Perruzzi began his coaching career as the head coach of Ohio University’s Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association club team.

Perruzzi is a 2011 graduate of Belmont Abbey, where he was a three-year starter at defensive midfielder. During his time at the Abbey, Perruzzi played in two Conference Carolinas Championship games, winning the first one in program history in 2008. He graduated with a B.A. in Sports Management and was a member of the Dean’s List and the President’s List. Perruzzi earned his Master’s Degree from Ohio University in Recreation and Sport Sciences in 2012.

We played two quarterbacks (Lambert and Cole Warehime) and that wasn’t perfect. We have to look at the tape. We have our whole season ahead of us.

I thought we had some bright spots, but there are some areas we have to tighten up. It was disappointing, but we are going to correct it and we will make some noise.”

On the flip side, Bolingbrook was happy to get out with the win and health.

“We had two defensive tackles starting on the offensive line, a new quarterback and a bunch of new guys on defense, so it was a good way to start the season,” Ivlow said. “A win is good.”

TENIO Sherrie M. Tenio (Fish) age 89, passed away of natural causes August 20, 2018 at Meadowbrook Manor, in Bolingbrook, IL. She was born to George G. Fish and Esther M. Fish-Robbins (Bellman) March 29, 1929 in Oakland, CA. Sherrie thoroughly enjoyed visiting with her family and had a deep and abiding love for her Children and Grandchildren.

Interests included, walking, crocheting for family, coloring, latch hooking and traveling.

Life member of the DAVA, a Member of the American Legion Auxillory and the VFW Auxillory.

Sherrie is survived by her brothers Charles Fish and Phillip Robbins, of California, children Esther (Paul) Laffoon (Gierz) of Bolingbrook, IL, Patricia (Rex) Young (Jewett) of Wasilla, AK, Everett (Toula) Jewett of Anchorage, AK, Natalie (Mike) Bears (Jewett), of Billings,

MT, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.

The family would like to thank her daughter Esther Laffoon and her husband Paul and Meadowbrook Manor for taking such wonderful care of of Mom. Sherrie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gilbert Tenio, sister Charlene Hazlelbaker (Fish), son William (Billy) D. Jewett, granddaughter Deborah Lambdin (Young), great grandson Arliss Lambdin III. A graveside service was held August 23, 2018, 2:00pm at Fairmount-Willow Hills Memorial Park, Willow Springs, IL.

Plan Ahead Now for School Physicals and Immunizations VVSD Student Health Services and all our school nurses remind all parents and guardians of VVSD students that students have the necessary immunizations and physicals for the start of the 201819 school year.

School physicals and immunizations are due to the building School Nurse no later than Mon. Oct. 15. Students needing physicals and immunizations include pre-school, kindergarten, 6th grade and 9th grade. Students going into 12th grade must also receive a meningococcal vaccine.
