Man gets maximum 80-year sentence for sexual assaults along I&M Canal 37-year old Miguel Luna is sentenced after pleading guilty in May Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that a man who pleaded guilty to raping two women on or near the I&M Canal path two years ago has received the maximum sentence of 80 years in prison.

Circuit Judge David Carlson sentenced Miguel Luna, 37, on Monday. Luna, who pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault in May, faced between 32 and 80 years in prison.

Luna attacked his first victim between Brandon Road and Larkin Avenue on Sept. 6, 2015. In this case, Luna jumped off a bike, tackled the woman from behind, dragged her into the woods, and tied her up. He repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim during the more than 90 minutes he held her captive.

Another woman was attacked

near the I&M Canal path in a similar manner around 8 a.m. on May 21, 2016 while she was running along the Frontage Road near Interstate 55. The defendant, who was had a ski mask, sunglasses, and surgical gloves, grabbed the victim from behind, put her into a chokehold, and tied her hands with shoelaces under the I-55 viaduct. He sexually assaulted her and left her tied under the viaduct. She eventually was able to free herself.

In both cases, he indicated he was armed with a knife, but he never brandished one.

The suspect was identified during the investigation of a third sexual assault of another woman that occurred on May 18, 2016. The defendant, who also knew this woman’s friend, tied up his victim and sexually assaulted her in a secluded area near Brandon Road. The victim’s friend later identified Luna for police. After Luna was identified in connection with this case, DNA testing would conclusively link him to the other two sexual assaults.

The third victim, however, recently died; charges related to her

case were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea in the other two cases.

“Miguel Luna repeatedly committed the most vicious sexual assaults against innocent, unsuspecting women in a recreation area that people from throughout the region should be able to enjoy in absolute safety,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow. “This ruthlessly violent predator terrorized our community and destroyed our sense of safety and security. He will spend the rest of his life behind cold steel prison bars where he will never, ever be able to attack an innocent woman again.”

Luna, who had entered the United States illegally, was living in the 1400 block of Winifred Street in Joliet at the time of the offenses.

State’s Attorney Glasgow praised the Illinois State Police, the Will County Sheriff’s Detectives, and Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley for their dogged work on this investigation as well as Assistant State’s Attorneys Mary Fillipitch and Kelly Tebo, who secured the guilty plea and sentence.

Inagural Pet-A-Palooza a big success

If being surrounded by many perky, rambunctious, energetic dogs is your thing, and you missed the Pet-A-Palooza last Saturday at the Crossroads of Faith United Methodist Church, well then there’s always next year.

This event featured a variety of different accessories, which made the day a success to its visitors.

Pet adoptions, pet blessings, pet photo booth, pet paw prints, dog baths, vendor tables, health tables and a weenie roast were all apart of this occurrence.

Office Manager Michelle Pieroni and her daughter, Payton, were glad to see so many people come out for the inau-

gural Pet-A-Palooza, which to them has many benefits.

“With this being our very first year we’ve had this, we wanted it to be a community wide event so that people could get interested in our church,” Michelle said. “Also, we wanted to open up this afternoon for people so they could adopt these pets if they wanted to because [Payton] and I are really into saving these animals through pet adoptions and pet shelters.”

Payton, also wanted the opportunity for more people to get involved with the Church and get the chance to come out and meet all the different pets having the opportunity to make a difference in not just the pets lives, but the people as well.

“We wanted to share this event with our community by opening up our arms and giving

these people the chance to meet all the pets and get involved more with our church,” Payton said. “We’ve never really done this with the church, it’s pretty inclusive and we’ve just been extremely excited that we’ve gotten the chance to do this for the people and the pets.”

Pet-A-Palooza was free admission to everybody who came, and had different sponsors that helped attribute to the animals well being.

“It’s nice for everybody because it is free, and all the donations accepted by the vendors will be going to the church,” Michelle said.

Adoption organizations that participated in the cause were NAWS Humane Society and Humane Haven Animal Shelter.

USACE seeks public comment on DuPage River study Residents have until the end of the month to submit thoughts

ENTERPRISE STAFF Residents have until the end of the month to submit comments on a feasibility study on flooding risks and mitigation plans along the DuPage River.

The Feasibility Report and Integrated Environmental Assessment (EA) was released in late July, with results of the DuPage River Study conducted by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

The study is designed to investigate overbank and backwater flooding along the DuPage River and its major tributaries. In doing so, it identifies and prioritizes high-risk areas, and helps to develop a range of possible structural and nonstructural alternatives to address flood risks.

The study area has experienced rapid development over the past several decades and currently in-

cludes 40 communities and approximately 900,000 residents.

The total watershed area is 378 square miles, with the mainstem watershed running 169 square miles, the West Branch DuPage River watershed covering 128 square miles, and the East Branch DuPage River watershed stretching 81 square miles.

Major storm events caused flooding along the DuPage river in 1996, 2008, 2010, and 2013.

An assessment of existing and projected future conditions determined that a significant risk of overbank flooding exists across most of the watershed. Expected annualized flood damages are estimated at $5.1 million over the 50-year period of analysis for the study.

The need to manage flood risk within the watershed was highlighted by major flooding that occurred in the spring of 2013. On April 18, 2013, a large portion of northeastern Illinois received an average of five inches of rainfall, with localized precipitation of over seven

inches over an 18- to 24-hour period.

The study area received widespread rainfall between 0.25 and 1.5 inches several days before the event, which saturated the ground and increased the potential for overbank flooding when heavier rains fell a few days later. The result was significant flooding throughout northern Illinois.

DuPage and Will Counties were included in the Federal Disaster Declaration associated with the event and received a combined total of more than $22 million in FEMA and other public support funds.

The feasibility study evaluated a range of measures to address overbank and backwater flooding along the DuPage River and its major tributaries.

Structural measures such as levees or floodwalls, floodwater storage reservoirs, channel improvements, and diversions were evaluated. In addition to consideration of construction of new strucSEE RIVER PAGE 5

“I think its pretty cool to see people interact, smile and be happy with all of the pets we have here today,” Michelle said.

“The pets really enjoy playing with everybody and they get that element of socialization which is nice.”

Another person that saw great benefit from the event was Tom Bourke who is the Pastor at Crossroads of Faith United Methodist Church.

“We know that pets are a very important part of our families,” Bourke said. “We wanted to

show that we truly care for our pets, and at the same time we wanted to try and see if we could get some of these dogs adopted.”

Pastor Bourke noticed the overall joy from the people at the event, and said it was great to see everybody acting together as a community should.

“Its great to see everybody coming together like this,” Bourke said. “I’ve seen so much serenity today, people are just at peace right now being able to walk up to another person who has their dogs and make that connection.”

Rockford region, Illinois a leader in aerospace,aviation tech

Many Illinoisans don’t realize it, but our state is a center of aerospace and aviation technology. Illinois’ aerospace cluster is centered around the northern and northeastern portion of the state. The Rockford area alone has more than 70 companies in the aerospace supply chain employing 7,000 people, says the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

If you include Chicago and southeastern Wisconsin, “there are more than 200 companies in the aerospace cluster, including giants such as AAR Corp., Northrop Grumman and Boeing,” DCEO says.

Illinois is home to prime contractors and subcontractors that together supply the U.S. military, NASA, Boeing, Airbus and smaller airplane manufacturers with numerous systems and components.

In fact, it’s been estimated that there’s no commercial jet in the air today (apart from those made in Russia) that does not have Illinois-made parts and systems on it.

Why northern Illinois? Sagar Patel, president of aircraft turbines at Woodward Inc. in Loves Park, explains.

“Over time we have built the ecosystem here, with companies that planted their roots here long ago and have adapted to the changing technologies successfully,” says Patel.

In 2016 Woodward, founded 147 years ago in Rockford, built a $300 million factory to manufacture jet engine fuel systems that can be found on most jets. The new, 440,000-square-foot plant, which

is gearing up to employ more than 1,000 people, is the company’s second in Loves Park. The first one, built in 1941, continues to operate.

The northern Illinois aerospace ecosystem of companies is recognized as having “solid research and development, staying ahead of the competition from around the world,” Patel said. “If you continue doing that, you’ll continue to be relevant and strong,” he said, adding, “as long as we don’t get complacent.

“Customers are looking for continued innovation, quality improvement and cost reduction. If you rest on success, you begin to decline.”

Illinois parts are in outer space, too.

Precision gears made by Roscoe’s Forest City Gear are working today on the surface of Mars.

In 2013, NASA’s $2.5 billion Mars Curiosity Rover was the first robot to drill into the surface Mars, to find evidence of wet environmental conditions in the distant past.

According to Forest City Gear’s website, “More than 70 gears produced and manufactured by Forest City Gear helped actuate Curiosity’s mobility systems and the robotic arm responsible for all critical drilling operations.”

Forest City Gear also produced gears for the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers that landed on Mars in 2004. The firm’s parts are also on the International Space Station.

Rockford’s UTC Aerospace helped design and build the space shuttle for NASA, and has made torpedoes for the Navy for decades. The firm also built a

$50 million testing facility for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and has been a key subcontractor for Boeing. It employs nearly 2,000 people in Rockford.

Boeing , one of the world’s largest corporations, moved its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001.

The company is in a 36-story building at 100 North Riverside Plaza in the West Loop.

In 2016, Wood Dale-based AAR Corp. opened a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at Chicago Rockford International Airport, which is now servicing aircraft from major airlines.

Rockford also boasts UPS’ secondlargest air hub for parcel sorting.

In addition to aviation manufacturing, Illinois’ airports provide jobs for 337,419 people, either directly or indirectly, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation study. Altogether they earn $12.8 billion.

From commercial airlines that serve 11 Illinois airports to the variety of general aviation services found throughout the state, the aviation industry creates more than $40 billion in economic activity, according to IDOT. Illinois also boasts one of the world’s busiest airports, Chicago O’Hare, which in 2016 handled 867,635 flights, according to the FAA. Chicago Midway handled 253,046 flights during the same year.

Walsh delivers 2018 State of the County Address Highlights include capital projects, transportation plans, and strong economy

Will County Executive Larry Walsh gave a rundown on what’s happening in Will County on Aug. 16, delivering the annual State of the County address to the Will County Board.

The update included highlights of major capital projects and major transportation efforts.

“Will County continues to prosper with steady population growth and many new construction projects,” Walsh said.

“County government is working hard to maintain a high quality of life while growing our regional economy.”

Walsh noted a number of significant projects throughout the county.

“Will County government is in the midst of the largest capital campaign in our 182-year history,” Walsh said. “This is a very exciting time, as we have hosted many ribbon cuttings and ground breakings for new buildings over the last several years.

Since conducting comprehensive space needs assessment and master plans process nearly 10 years ago, we have been taking many steps to consolidate the

RIVERFROM PAGE 3 tural measures, the optimization or rehabilitation or existing structures was also evaluated.

Physical nonstructural measures such as acquisitioning, floodproofing, and elevation of structures were evaluated individually to determine whether they were economically justified.

The study provides recommendations for flood risk reduction through acquisition, elevation, or floodproofing structures.

Nonstructural features are included within the communities of Plainfield, Minooka, Shorewood, Joliet, Bolingbrook, Naperville, Warrenville, Lisle, and Glen Ellyn as well as within unincorporated DuPage and Will Counties. The nonstructural plans include modifications of 42 structures including likely acquisition of 4 structures,

functions of county government, streamline operational costs, and provide services to our residents in a convenient and efficient manner.”

Walsh said the smaller projects have laid the foundation for larger projects, like the $33 million Will County Sheriff’s communication center and the now under construction 10-story Will County Courthouse.

The new courthouse has a price tag of $210 million and will house 38 courtrooms. Completion is expected by fall 2020.

“This modern courthouse will accommodate the needs of our county for many years to come.

We are also working closely with the City of Joliet on reopening Chicago Street and looking forward to the new revitalized city plaza across from the Rialto Theater. These projects are an important part of the renaissance of downtown Joliet… We are proud to be part of this renewal of our county seat.”

Walsh also said plans to update the health department facilities and centralizing of offices will make government more efficient and provide better services to the community.

“A new health department

building will enable our employees continue to offer superior services and protect the health of our residents. The existing building has long outlived its functional life and our residents and staff deserve better,” Walsh said.

The Executive added that the county plans to embrace technology, implementing a new IT system and bringing government services via online permitting and inspection scheduling system in the Land Use department and a new case management system to support operations of the States Attorney, Public Defender and other law enforcement agencies. Will County is also implementing a new county finance system which will give both elected officials and staff better tools to monitor county financial work.

“In a world that continues to see major advances in technology in everyday life, people expect the availability of technology to conduct governmental business,” Walsh said. “Will County is very progressive in offering services our residents can access from any electronic device.

We are continuing to use technology to further streamline our services.”

Walsh also said that the county is working on drainage problems in the Ridgewood and Fairmont

elevation of 23 structures, and floodproofing of 15 structures.

The Corps of Engineers is accepting public comments on the study. Comments may be submitted via e-mail or mailed to: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District, 231 S. LaSalle Street, Ste.

Comments will be accepted through Aug. 30. The study is a partnership of DuPage County, Will County, and the Illinois Stormwater Management Planning Committee in coordination with the

neighborhoods with a proposed investment of $6 million, with those repairs expected to be completed by 2022.

The county still faces financial challenges, following significant funding decreases from the state of Illinois.

“With a reduction in our local distributive funds from the state of $2.4 million in 2017 and continued pressure caused by reduced state funding to local governments, we are forced to make difficult decisions about operating expenses and investments,”

Walsh said, adding that he plans to outline a new proposal in September’s budget address.

Walsh also noted that Will County is a leader in green projects and solar standards.

Overall, Walsh said Will County is on track for a positive future.

“The future remains bright and Will County is blessed with our strategic location, skilled workforce, and sound infrastructure,” Walsh said.

With the start of the new school year comes a new football season and new expectations for all teams.

Every team will enter Friday night with the same 0-0 record, and all of them will have the same ultimate goal — to make the playoffs and win a state championship.

That is no different for the teams in the Voyager Media coverage area.

BOLINGBROOK Bolingbrook returns to the field Friday against Downers Grove South with a talented group back.

On offense, running back Quentin Pringle returns after a season that saw him carry the ball 129 times for 1,049 yards and scored 12 rushing TDs on the season, including a game where he

rushed for 421 yards in a game this season, good for 18th on the all-time single game list.

“We have quite a few guys back on both sides of the ball and some key guys back, too,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow.

Anthony Williams Jr. returns to join Pringle in the offensive backfield.

Taking snaps this season will be 6-foot, 5-inch, 200-pound junior quarterback Devyn Suggs, a transfer from Homewood-Flossmoor.

The addition of Suggs at the quarterback position, that is one area we weren’t too sure of in the offseason,” Ivlow said. “He is a good kid, great grades.”

He will be passing to Antonio King and Yorel Davis, who return at wideout.

Up front, the Raiders return Trevor Borland, AJ Parades and John Jeremy Williams.

Sophomore Ison Robinson has had a great spring at defensive end, as have linebackers Sonny Ducato, Cam Palmer and Micah Huff. Ivlow said sophomore defensive backs Justin Walters and Malik Rainey are also doing well.

Playing in the always competitive SoutWest Suburban Conference, Boingbrook is picked to finish behind defending state champion Lincoln-Way East and H-F this season.

“All of the experts are picking us third in the conference and we will see how smart they are,” Ivlow said. “We don’t care. Those rankings are based on last year and how many kids are back and all that. That’s fine, but chemistry and that locker room has a lot to do with it. I have had lesser teams go further because we had a good locker room.”

ROMEOVILLE Coming off a 2-7 campaign a year ago, the Spartans are looking to make the playoffs this year which the can achieve with hard work and leadership from the core of seniors.

Romeoville is looking to compete in the Southwest Prairie Conference and “surprise some of the

The offense will be young this year for the Spartans and will be paced by a two-headed attack at quarterback with juniors Zack Gibson and Donovan Dehoyos looking to replace Cam Neely.

Both athletes could see time throwing the ball as well as catching it. Junior Joey De La Rosa will also look to have an impact in the passing game as well as see time in the defensive backfield.

On defense, seniors Jabril Williams (OLB), Kelvin Asamoah (MLB) and Anthony Dehoyos (DE) will anchor the team.

DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH After opening 0-2 a year ago, the Mustangs are looking to fare better when they face Bolingbrook and Oak Park to open the season.

On offense, coach Mark Molinari said the 2018 version of the Mustangs are “the most talent at skill positions since the Josh and Scottie Williams era.”

Last season, South was forced to go to sophomore quarterback Jayden Lambert varsity QB’s were lost in game four.

Senior George Ross is coming off a torn labrum in 2017 and will be the starting quarterback. His role will be to get the ball distributed to multiple playmakers, Jaelyn Blecke, Jayden Lambert, Kyle Heavey, Devean Washington, Ali Issa, and Vinny Provenzano.

Washington and Lambert to carry the ball along with returning senior Kenton Johnson.

The offensive line should be a good compliment to the skill positions this year. Junior Shawn Lee, along with seniors Kendall Burrow, Max Foster and Nick Sostak all return with experience.

On defense, Downers South will be led by the defensive line as Shawn Lee, Kendall Burrow, and Ali Issa return.

“Lee has been on the varsity since his freshman year, should represent a dominant force on the inside,” Molinari said. “Kendall Burrow has received interests from several schools (San Diego, Dayton, and Air Force) will create a dominant inside presence. Ali Issa will start in his third straight season as the Mustangs speed rusher.”

Senior Keegan Garland will return at outside linebacker to add experience to the group.

The secondary will be anchored

by Jaelynn Blecke and athletic sophomore Devean Washington.

Senior Tyler Bachara is back to handle the kicking duties.

PLAINFIELD NORTH Last season, Plainfield North made a push into the IHSA playoffs finishing with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

This season the Tigers look to be in the mix again with what coach Tim Kane sees as a group of four at the top, including Oswego, Minooka, Oswego East.

North will look to replace quarterback Brady Miller, defensive end Shane McGrail , defensive back Zach Nadle and do-it-all athlete Dillon McCarthy.

On offense, the Tigers return five starters and Kane said they “need to get playmakers the ball in variety of ways.”

One of those playmakers will be junior running back Marcellus Moore. Moore is coming off a track season where he won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and anchored a pair of relays to gold. He was named the 2017-18 Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the state of Illinois.

Senior Anthony Elkareh will anchor an offensive line in front of Moore, while senior Garret Cook will look to be a weapon again in the receiving game.

Moore is not the only state champion from last season that will be in the mix on the Tiger offense, as Greg Budig comes in from a baseball state championship to take over the duty as quarterback this season.

Juniors Tobenna Enyi (WR) and Chris Lynch (OL) will add to the offense, while junior Jaylon Tillman (DB/WR) will see time on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, senior linebacker Nate Curtis will anchor a defense that is very young and inexperienced.

“We want to improve each week, play to our best and each guy help the team be the best we can be,” Kane said.

PLAINFIELD CENTRAL The 2018 Wildcats will be led on the field by a strong group of returners. Leading the defense will be a strong core of defensive backs headed by Jamel Sheppard, Jarin Edwards, and Bruce Pendleton.

The Offense will bring back many returning starters, including Tom Earls and Josh Casey, who started in all nine games last season on the offensive line.

Reese Lillie and Joey Kramarsky will lead a talented group of wide receivers. These returners will provide needed experience for a young crop of talented players who make the step to the varsity level as juniors.

Throwing to them will be Nick Barner 6-foot, 3-inch, 185-pound senior quarterback, who takes over for Justin Divelbiss who stopped football to focus on baseball this season.

PLAINFIELD EAST The Bengals come into the 2018 season after a disappointing 2017 campaign where they finished 1-8 under now second year head coach Terrance Terry.

“The group that we have now is extremely resilient and extremely energetic which I love,” Terry said. “The biggest thing we’ve had to work on as a program is to get a level of consistency so we can operate at a high level.”

Plainfield East will be without former all-conference standout Billy Pierce who led the Bengals in receiving with 47 catches, 816 yards and five touchdowns. “[Billy] ranks with the best receivers in our schools history,” Terry said.

On the defensive side of the ball, Plainfield East will be without the services of former standout defensive end Jack Sullivan, who will be playing in West Lafayette for the Purdue Boilermakers this fall.

Back to distribute the football this season will be senior quarterback Ben Mazurkiewicz.

PLAINFIELD SOUTH The Cougars will look to eclipse the .500 mark in 2018 with Bill Bicker at the helm after finishing 4-5 in 2017.

“The last game of the season we beat Minooka who was playing for a conference title and ended up being a quarterfinalist,” Bicker said. “That game let our kids know how close we really are from coming through.”

In the four games that South lost last year, two of them were by a touchdown with one of them being a 19-18 loss against the Joliet West Tigers who made the playoffs.

Bicker, said that a couple plays here and there would have changed their season around last year, but he knows that 2018 is a new season with new goals.

“Our goals are to win Plainfield, make the playoffs, win the conference and goal four is to play in week 12,” Bicker said.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Cougars will be led by their two senior quarterbacks Cody Dieball and Joey Passo who will be running the option attack.

“Cody’s reads have been really solid this year, you could tell his progression from last year to this year,” Bicker said.

South will utilize a rebuilding young offensive line for their offensive attack, and will feature senior wide receiver 6-foot, 2-inch

Alex Lekovish who also plays on the Cougar baseball team.

Defensively, South will be led by their four veteran linebackers including all-conference senior Connor Hall.

Hall will be followed by senior Matt Fuller, senior Jake Kendall and junior Brandon Lipowski.

MINOOKA The Indians come in on paper with their second new head coach in as many years, but that is only on paper.

As (new coach) John (Belskis) said “the only thing that has changed is who goes out for the coin flip.”

McCombs lead Minooka to a 9-3 season last year with fellow Hall-of-Famers Belskis and Bob Williams on his staff. McCombs was then hospitalized with some heart issues following the season and stepped aside as head coach, but remains on the staff.

Belskis was head coach at Downers Grove South from 1989 to 2012, posting a 201-62 record with 22 playoff appearances.

“In my feeling, Johnny Belskis is the best head coach in the state of Illinois,” McCombs said at the WJOL kickoff show. “He gets more out of kids than anyone I have ever seen. He is A-plus.”

The Indians will have to replace several seniors, including hardhitting defensive back Max Christiano.

Nick Daniel will move from starting outside linebacker to the secondary this year.

“The way we run our defense is that we call it by the way the offense lines up,” McCombs said.

“We don’t know what we are going

to run until our opponents line up. Nick is so good at getting us in the right spot. Maybe as good as every kid I have ever coached.”

Junior Jake Shipla will be a twoway starter on the offensive and defensive line this season, while 6-foot, 3-inch, 220-pounder Kyle Williamson returns from a knee injury to help anchor the line.

They will block for returning running back Connor Etzkorn, who was injured in the summer after track, but is back.

The man handing the ball off is not decided yet, as junors Seth Lehr and Stevie Gonzalez battle for the spot.

Whoever earns the job will be throwing to Braden Vercler, the returning leading receiver.

LOCKPORT The Porters are coming off a 2-7 season overall and 1-5 in the SouthWest Suburban Conference a tear ago – this year, coach Dan Starkey and Lockport are looking to challenge for a conference title.

“To achieve that goal, we have to play great defense, special teams and be balanced offensively while not turning the ball over,” he said.

The Porters are returning three starters on the offensive line as far as seniors Ray Pustelnik and OL Chris Walus as well as junior Payton Collins.

A group of junior linemen with significant size, including junior Billy Doyle, will join the returners.

The skill positions, including quarterback, will be inexperienced.

Juniors Marcos Voulgaris and Bryan Mane are in competition

for the quarterback position, while senior Leslie Nartey will look to have an impact in the backfield.

Junior receiver Malik Makhlouf and senior tight end Joe Edwards will look to solidify the passing game.

On the defensive side of the football Lockport has many first year starters and will need to be disciplined and play with great effort.

Returning is senior linebacker Will Cichowski. Senior Jake Janeczko will return to the defense as well as senior Ronald Tucker who did not play last season.

Junior Colin Schmutzler will look to have an impact in the defensive backfield.

Ryan Barth is back as kicker and punter for the Porters.

JOLIET CENTRAL Brett Boyter’s Steelman will look to bounce back after another 0-9 campaign in 2017, while also trying to replace four year starting quarterback Zach Wisneski.

“Almost every offense you look at starts with the quarterback,” Boyter said. “Jared King will be stepping in and replacing Zach Wisneski, but we’re very high on Jared because he understands the details and intricacies of this offense, and he’s a great leader.”

The Steelman will be led by their ground attack with junior running back Ke’andre Wiley and sophomore running back Elijah Smith.

Defensively, Central will be anchored by the 6-foot, 4-inch, 240-pound senior defensive tackle German Gonzalez to disrupt opposing offensive lines.

Work together to raise financially responsible kids DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are not on the same page when it comes to money and our two teenage daughters. I think they should be learning the value of work and money, but she doesn’t want them to work. She regularly hands them spending money and buys them expensive gifts.

I want our girls to have some nice things, but this is starting to cause problems in our relationship. Do you have any advice?

STAN DEAR STAN, Kids should learn to work and

make money at an early age.

We’ve given nice gifts to our kids, but the difference is they also worked and made money for themselves. The gifts we gave them were for special occasions.

Showering our kids with money and expensive toys all the time was not our way of life.

In this situation, your wife is allowing them to be nothing but consumers. I know she loves them, but they’re not learning how to work, and they’re not learning how to save or give. This is setting them up for a lifetime of unrealistic expectations.

If something doesn’t happen to change things, you’re going to end up with two spoiled little girls, who think they should be given everything their entire lives. Still, I think the biggest problem is you and your wife are experiencing a communication and marital breakdown. If the kids weren’t in the picture, I’ve got a feeling the same problems would exist. The difference is they would manifest themselves in other ways.

Obviously, your wife needs to stop being so impulsive where the kids are concerned. Try sit-

ting down with her and gently explaining your feelings. Let your wife know you love her and how generous she is, but you’re worried this is having a negative impact on your children.

Maybe you could try to establish some guidelines as to when really nice gifts are appropriate, too. There’s a middle ground you can reach, but it’s going to take some time and effort. Most of all, it means the two of you are going to have to communicate and work together for the good of your kids.
