@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com The night of April 26, everything changed for the Dickerson family. “Growing up in Naperville, you don’t really have to worry about crime especially as a kid,” said Charmaine Warren, a childhood friend of Candice Dickerson, who was the victim of a random shooting. “The day that I found about it, it was behind shock.” Candice was going about her everyday life on that spring day, then in a Metro PCS store at 59th and Kedzie in Gage Park, the mother of three was shot in the head while in front of her 10-and-12-year-old sons. She was shopping for a cell phone for her son for his accomplishments in the classroom when a stray bullet from gang gunfire went through the window of the store, killing the 36-year-old. “I was just thinking to myself,

Will County Executive Larry Walsh announced Aug. 15 he will not seek a fifth term next year. Walsh has been battling prostate cancer in recent years and told the Will County Board his treatment would prevent him from running an effective campaign. “(The) decision is a no-brainer. I have to back from chemo and I’m going to do it,” Walsh said. “And I hate to back away, but I will not be a candidate for Will County Executive in the 2020 election.” Walsh, who has overseen the board since 2004, intends to serve out the remainder of his term through next December.
An Elwood farmer, Walsh served as a state senator from 1997 to 2004. During his first term in Springfield he became friends with another new senator, Barack Obama. While President, Obama on more than one occasion expressed a desire to have his “poker-playing buddy” visit the White House for a game, but it’s unclear if that ever occurred. Walsh, a Democrat, said he’s always tried to “reach across the aisle” for the county’s benefit.
“We can disagree (politically), but we don’t have to be disagreeable,” Walsh said. Despite the recession, Will County’s population and development have grown substantially since Walsh has been County Executive. More warehouses and intermodals front highways and truck traffic has increased. Walsh also targeted the rising heroin deaths by starting the Will County Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions (HELPS) organization.

Bulk purchase program continues to help Chicago area businesses and homeowners The Solarize Chicagoland group buy program is gaining momentum as it surpassed its second goal when the 22nd homeowner signed on to go solar. Since then the program has grown to include 24 properties, with more contracts being signed every week. Offered for the first time to Chicago area property owners, Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Will counties have partnered with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and the Citizens Utility Board to support the bulk solar group purchase program for residents and businesses located across all four counties. “This program is a big benefit for our residents,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “They have an opportunity to install solar energy at a reduced rate with the possibility of still more reductions if enough property owners sign up.” This grassroots program combines volume purchasing with community education to make solar more accessible and affordable for area property owners. Thanks to Christopher Gotschall, of Evanston, Emmy Lou John, of Aurora, and other Solarize Chicagoland participants, the program’s pricing has been lowered below its already lower-than-market rate, helping put the program past its second benchmark. “We try to source our energy from renewable and sustainable sources as much as possible to combat climate change, and for years have wanted to install solar panels but it was never affordable,” said Gotschall. Through Solarize Chicagoland Gotschall learned about the “incentives available and the benefits of installing now instead of waiting. It’s something we can finally af-

Solarize Chicagoland started Solar Power Hour informational sessions in late April. During these free, hour-long presentations, Solarize Chicagoland representatives give a brief explanation of the program, discuss the projected costs of installing solar and highlight the benefits. Presentations are scheduled at various locations around the Chicago area through Sept. 10; all are free and open to the public. Interested property owners have until Sept. 30 to decide whether to participate. “We’re trying to simplify the process of going solar,” said Peter Murphy, Solar Program Director for the MREA.

Bolingbrook s Borland looks to lead No. 5 ranked Ohio State to a National Championship BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director
@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com Heading into his junior season at Ohio State University, Bolingbrook graduate Tuf Borland is excited for the changes on the horizon. Ryan Day takes over for Urban Meyer as head coach of the Buckeyes and that means a new look on both sides of the football. “Sometimes change is a good thing. You are going to see a lot of guys that are excited to be out there and excited to be playing again and I think our performance will show,” Borland said. “There is a lot of expectation here and we are expected to live up to that. We talk about next man up and always being prepared and we have a team full of guys who can do that. “Anytime there is a new coaching staff, there are changes and that will be evident. I don’t want to get into specifics or scheme, but it is going to allow each of us players to use our athleticism and play football like we know how.” After redshirting his freshman season, Borland has played in all 28 games the past two seasons, despite suffering an Achilles tendon injury during spring practice. Last season he started 11 games and finished third on the team with 67 tackles, including nine tackles for loss. His performance earned him honorable mention All-Big Ten. Borland has been a two-time captain for the Buckeyes and is one of only two returning captains
from last season. If selected by his teammates again, the middle linebacker would be only the secondever three-time Ohio State captain and first from the defensive side of the ball, joining only former quarterback J.T. Barrett. At the end of this season, Borland has a decision to make – with one year of eligibility remaining and with graduate classes already under his belt can stay at Ohio State and continue his graduate degree and play football, he can leave college and head into his chosen profession or try his hand at playing professional football. While he has options at season’s end, Borland said he will focus on that after he helps the Buckeyes compete for a Big Ten and NCAA National Championship. Ohio State is ranked No. 5 in the nation in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll and Associated Press ranikings. “Coming in early gave me some advantages academically and I will graduate this fall while taking graduate level courses. I haven’t really given any thought to my future,” Borland said. “I would like to play, but right now I am just focused on this season. When I came here I was looking to provide myself with the best options for my future, whether I am lucky enough to keep playing or get ready for work and life after football. “The biggest thing for me this year is putting everything I have into these guys and this team and if we have everyone buy in, there are no limits to what this team can

Lewis Rivera Selected To The MIVA Hall Of Fame The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) announced on Monday (Aug. 19) that former Lewis men’s volleyball standout Victor Rivera has been inducted into the MIVA Hall of Fame. Rivera is one of five inductees who will be honored, including George Williams’ Ken Mattison and Marv Zimmerman, Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jay Golsteyn and Ball State’s Keith Thornburgh. The MIVA Hall of Fame Class of 2019 will be honored at Lewis University on Saturday, November 2nd. Rivera was the first three-time AllAmerica selection in Lewis men’s volleyball history. Rivera was an outside hitter for the Flyers from 1996-99. Lewis amassed a 104-32 record (.765) during that span, and the 1996 and 1998 Flyers won the MIVA title and played
in the NCAA Championships. Lewis placed seventh, 10th, fourth and ninth in the final national poll during his career. The Naranjito, Puerto Rico, product was selected to the AVCA and Volleyball Magazine All-America first teams in 1998 and 1999, and to the AVCA and Volleyball Magazine All-America second teams in 1997. He was a 1996 Volleyball Magazine All-Freshman Team choice and a two-time AVCA National Player of the Week. Rivera was also the first four-time All-MIVA first-team honoree and was the 1998 and 1999 MIVA Player of the Year. He was the 1998 MIVA Tournament Most Valuable Player, made the 1997 All-MIVA Tournament and was the 1996 MIVA Newcomer of the Year. As of 2019, Rivera holds Lewis ca-
reer records for kills (2,521), kills per set (5.58), attempts (4,381), service aces (153), block solos (149), total blocks (567) points (3,032), points per set (6.71), sets played (452) and tied for first in matches played (132). Football Classic as Kody Randa (SR/ Sandwich, Ill.), Zach Buikema (SR/ Bourbonnais, Ill.), Dwayne Milton (SR/Machesney Park, Ill.), and Brandon Ruffin (SR/Peoria, Ill.) have each received an invitation to play in the inaugural game per a release issued today (Aug. 19) by the NAIA National Office. The four USF student-athletes are among 116 seniors nationally slated to participate with rosters divided into east and west teams. A total of 42 schools will be represented in the game, which is scheduled to be held Saturday, Dec. 14, at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga., a week prior to the 2019 NAIA Football National Championship game in Ruston, La. A 2018 honorable mention AllMid-States Football Association (MFSA) Midwest League performer, Randa racked up a 2018 team thirdmost 76 total tackles (28 solos) and accumulated 3.5 sacks while his five tackles for minus 35 yards tied for fourth highest on the squad. The 5-11, 215-pound linebacker started in all 11 games last season and chalked up two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. Randa, who was an All-MFSA Midwest League Second Teamer in 2017, netted a team seventh-place tying 43 stops (19 solos) to go with a sack for a nine-yard loss. He also compiled two forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and pass breakups apiece while intercepting one pass for 31 yards and a pair of tackles for a 10-yard loss as starter in all 10 encounters. Buikema, a 2018 All-MSFA Midwest League selection, is a twoyear (2017-18) starter at offensive right tackle. The 6-6, 300-pound lineman played an integral role in helping Saints’ running back Dwayne Milton set a USF singlegame rushing mark last fall. Buikema earned All-MSFA Midwest League Honorable Mention recognition in his 2017 junior season and was a part of a Saints’ offensive line which helped the Saints placed third among the MSFA leaders in passing yards and fourth in total offense. The three-year (2016-18) letter winner achieved MSFA All-Academic Team member honors in 2016. Milton capped off a productive 2018 season by ranking fifth in the MSFA and 19th in the NAIA in total rushing yards (1,089 yds.) in 10 contests. The eight-game starter averaged 6.3 yards per carry with five TD’s on 174 carries and had 92 yards on 10 receptions for a 9.2 yards per
catch average. The 5-8, 175-pound running back garnered first-team All-MSFA Midwest League accolades last fall and totaled four 100 rushing yard or more single-game performances. Milton, who a Northern Illinois transfer, was chosen as the MSFA Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week (10/15) following his record-setting 249 rushing yards and three TD performance in the Saints’ 55-0 non-conference home victory over Lindenwood-Belleville (10/13). Ruffin, a 2018 NAIA Honorable Mention All-America selection and a three-time (2016-18) first-team MFSA All-Midwest League honoree, holds the distinction of being the Saints’ all-time leader in both receiving yards (2,597) and receiving touchdowns (34). He has compiled 139 career catches for an 83.8 yards per game average in 31 career games, all as a starter. The 6-4, 180-pound wideout ranked among the top five in the MSFA a season ago and near the top of the NAIA’s leaders in receptions (50), receiving yards (916), receiving touchdowns (14) and total touchdowns (15). He led the Saints in scoring with 90 points and averaged 91.6 receiving yards per contest. Ruffin recorded at least 66 receiving yards and a touchdown in eight of his 10 2018 season appearances. The 2018 MSFA AllAcademic Team pick caught a squad second-most 32 passes for 661 yards (20.7 ypc.) and eight TD’s to go with a team third-best 48 points scored in 10 outings for the 2018 campaign. Ruffin paced the Saints with 1,020 receiving yards (17.9 ypc.) and 12 TD’s on 57 catches while also scoring a team-leading 73 points as an 11-game starter “We are excited to bring this event to NAIA Football,” said Austin Bennett, Senior Football Classic Director. “It is a great opportunity to recognize senior football studentathletes as well as provide an opportunity for them to gain exposure to professional football organizations. Hosting this event in Savannah, Georgia will provide a great experience for the players as well as the City of Savannah!” St. Francis kicks off its 2019 season on Saturday, Aug. 31, as the Fighting Saints travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on the defending NAIA National Champion Morningside College Mustangs. A 12 p.m. (CT) start time is slated for the seasonopening matchup.

LAURA DEAR LAURA: In a case like yours, you don’t need a complicated will. But you do need an inexpensive, basic will. The larger and more complicated your estate is, the more you’d spend on estate planning and a will in order to ensure everything is properly addressed — and to keep the government’s hands off everything. Let’s say you’re in your early- to mid-20s and single. You have a car and a bank account, and that’s it. In this kind of scenario, it’s going to be easy to work through your estate. But it’s going to take your parents — or whoever’s left — a whole lot longer to get those few simple transactions taken care of if you don’t have a will in place. The other thing you’ll always want to have in your will package is a health care power of attorney directive. This includes things like who’s going to make medical decisions for you if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself. As a part of this, you’d want to fill out the paperwork on whether to disconnect life support systems in the event of a coma. These things aren’t fun to think about, but doing it will take a huge burden off the people you love. And all this becomes even more important if you have children, because the state will step in and decide what happens to them if you don’t. Having these things laid out ahead of time, and sharing them with your family and close friends, is a very thoughtful and mature thing to do for those who would be left behind in the event of your death. They’re already going to be distraught and grieving,

DEAR DAVE: My wife and I are on Baby Step 2, and the only debt we have is $90,000 in student loans. We bring home about $90,000 a year. In addition to this, we have almost $60,000 in equity in our home. We also have a toddler, plus another baby on the way. Do you think we should sell the house and rent for a few years, while using the money from the sale of the house to pay down our student loan debt?
CHRIS DEAR CHRIS: No, I wouldn’t sell your home in this situation. You’re going to be out of debt in a couple of years or so, anyway. You’ll just have to lean into it and make sure you’re living on a strict, written budget. I’m talking about no vacations and no eating out. You shouldn’t see the inside of a restaurant unless you’re working there. And the new kid’s crib may have to come from a garage sale, but so what? Mine

weekends. You’ve got a tough couple of years ahead of you, but I think it’s worth the tradeoff. Keep your house.
