Nature is capturing the interest of area residents and their photos show it all.

In a new twist of a photo contest sponsored by the Forest Preserve of Will County, photos and nature enthusiasts alike have taken to the outdoors, sharing their documented moments on film, including one of Bolingbrook’s own at nearby Isle a a Cache in Romeoville.

“We are really impressed with the caliber of photos we are receiving in this new contest,” said Cindy Cain, public information officer for the Forest Preserve District of Will County. “It’s no longer limited to participants of just one program, as it was in the past. It’s a wonderful way for people to share their nature

School calendar transition has VVSD students back in the books Aug. 17

It’s earliest start date yet, thousands of students from the Valley View School District headed back to school Wednesday, Aug. 17.

As a unit school district that includes elementary through high school grades, VVSD has been working for the last two years toward transitioning to a school calendar that allows for

grading periods to coordinate with holidays.

Most specifically, the second grading period ends Dec. 22, right before the winter break, allowing high school students to take finals before the two-week vacation.

To accommodate professional development needs, school officials have added a monthly early release initiative for elementary schools this year. A similar initiative has been in place at the middle and high school levels since the 2013-14 school year, a practice that “is commonplace

in many districts throughout Will and DuPage counties,” according to VVSD Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Rachel Kinder.

Elementary early release will take

place at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 31, Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 16, Dec. 7, Jan. 25, Feb. 22, March 22, April 26 and May 17.

Middle school early release (1:20 p.m.) and high school early release (12:43 p.m.) will take place on the

same dates.

The 2016-17 school year is set to close before Memorial Day. The tentative last day of school, if no weather-related school closings occur, is May 26.

Romeoville joins fight against cancer Businesses, schools, churches, community groups, families have been working for months

In what has fast become an annual event, Romeoville will host Relay for Life, bringing together a community to fight back against cancer, raising money to refund research for a cure.

With numbers increasing each year, approximately 168 participants and 25 teams raising more than $127,000 have signed up for the event. Come out to support

them and those suffering from cancer at the event to be held from 4p.m. to midnight Aug. 27 at Deer Crossing Park, 1050 Romeo Road, Romeoville.

The idea is to celebrate the lives of those who have cancer, remember those lost to the disease, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families have been working for months with pre-events from paint nights to raffles to raise money for the cause.

These funds and those collected at the event will go to support cancer research to help find cures and to provide local programs aimed at helping people stay well, get well and fight back.

The day’s event includes an opening ceremony to kick off the event. Survivors will then take a first lap around the path, followed by caregivers. Throughout the day, teams will walk the path while sharing in fun activities to help celebrate those that won the battle.

At 9 p.m. the Luminaria ceremony will be held at candlelight where participants will remember loved ones lost to cancer, support people who currently have cancer, and honor people who fought cancer in the past.

Organizers say it is a powerful part of the event because it provides an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.

The Relay for Life event began back in the mid 1980s, proving that one person can make a difference.

In an effort to raise more money for cancer research, Dr. Gordy Klatt, of Tacoma, Washington, started running a marathon. In 1985, he

spent 24 hours circling a track for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 that night.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer. It unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all.

County auditor to Illinois Congressman crowned cover fraud prevention ‘Champion of Science’ at upcoming seminar Limited seats; early sign up encouraged Will County Auditor Duffy Blackburn announced an upcoming seminar designed to train community and governmental organizations on ways to notice and prevent fraud.

The seminar, scheduled for Aug. 23, will help train community governments, non-profit organizations and school districts on how to better identify the types, costs and red flags of common internal fraud schemes.

“You talk about news stories turning up fraud cases so frequently,” Blackburn said. “At each organization, you really need to be proactive, set the right tone at the top and keep an eye out for risks. We’ve found that the extra effort is critical to reduce the risks and costs that we face in Will County.”

A certified public accountant and certified information systems auditor, Blackburn is also a graduate professor in computer fraud and IT auditing at Benedictine University.

Additionally, Angela Morelock, from the firm BKD, will speak at the seminar. Blackburn said Morelock is an expert instructor on the subject of fraud prevention.

The seminar is scheduled for noon to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in the Will County Board Room at the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago, Joliet.

Four continuing professional education hours are available for attending CPA’s and other certification requirements.

Village to kick off Jubilee Friday No coolers, outside food or pets are allowed on premises

By Bugle Staff The village is gearing up for its annual festival that draws out crowds for food, fun and family events.

Started in 1990, the Jubilee began as an expanded version of Pathways Fest, in celebration of the Village’s 25th year of incorporation. Several years later, the Pathways Parade moved to September and the Jubilee became a stand-alone event and one that marks the village’s biggest summer celebrations.

This year’s event will kick off at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19 on town center grounds, 375 Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook. The classic rock band, Second Time Around, will hit the stage first Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and then it is time to celebrate Pink Floyd with Think Floyd USA playing out the night until 11 p.m. with a full musical and lighting tribute to the famous band.

The party continues through the weekend with the Jubilee open from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m.

Police officers receive FOP life saving awards

Taking their call to duty to heart, four Romeoville police officers were acknowledged for their heroic efforts.

These officers, whose on-duty actions prevented tragedy received the Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge Life Saving Award during the organization’s annual convention July 29 – 30 in Rosemont.

The award recipients are Romeoville Police Officers Sgt. Brian Truhlar, Nicholas Clesceri, Joshua Wyatt and Jeffrey Gifford.

The FOP Life Saving Award is granted for outstanding efforts in performing actions or applying techniques that result in saving or sustaining a human life.

The four recipients are members of Romeoville Police FOP Lodge 15.

On February 28, Romeoville officers received a call of a suicidal teenager standing outside the fence barrier of the overpass to I-55.

Truhlar arrived at the scene, engaged the subject, and eventually won his trust and talked him into shaking his hand.

Truhlar then climbed up and reached over the fence barrier to shake the teenager’s hand and grabbed on to him. Officers Clesceri and Wyatt then climbed up on the

fence and the three officers were able to pull the teenager over the fence to safety. Their actions not only saved the life of the teenager but also prevented the teenager from jumping onto the a busy I-55 and endangering motorists driving through the overpass.

On April 17, while on patrol Officer Gifford noticed smoke coming from a nearby subdivision and located a house with flames going up the side of the structure.

Gifford banged on the door with no success, found the garage door

open and entered the residence.

He located a women standing by the stairs who had been asleep and unaware of her house being on fire.

The woman told Gifford that her infant daughter was asleep. Gifford located the daughter and escorted both women outside the residence.

No one had noticed the house being on fire before Gifford arrived.

The Fraternal Order of Police, founded in 1915, is the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States.

The 2016-17 school year is here, and I couldn’t be more excited for our students, staff and families.

Each new school year brings a long list of challenges – from shifting enrollments and student needs to implementing new teaching and learning initiatives; from hiring and acclimating more than 120 new teachers and staff to completing major capital projects; from dealing with changes in state testing to the (seemingly never ending) political battles over budgets and funding.

Yet the new school year also always brings more – and more important – opportunities and rewards than challenges.

Each year, our 28,000 students get to learn new skills and acquire new

knowledge, make and strengthen friendships, and grow and mature socially and emotionally.

Each year, our staff of 3,100 teachers, support staff and administrators help teach and support and mentor young minds and bodies and spirits.

And each year, our families help shape our community and the world one child at a time, through their special role as parents and guardians of our students.

Sadly, the challenges will always be there.

Something will always be making our work as education professionals more difficult than it should be. Something will always make a child’s life harder than he or she deserves. And whether

we like it or not, the many social, political and financial issues that affect our community will always impact what happens in our schools.

There is so much about life that we simply cannot control.

Yet we can work together as educators and parents to make sure that our schools are always able to give our students the best opportunities for success.

Likewise, students can and must do everything they can to learn, achieve and grow to their greatest potential.

The start of every new school year is another chance for all of us to do our part to ensure that every child in our community is equipped today, for whatever tomorrow will bring.

That’s our shared solemn duty and our promise to the future – and to me, there’s nothing more exciting.

Have a great 2016-17 school year.

Together, we will continue to prepare learners for the future.

Despite multiple rulings from Illinois State Board of Elections, publications continue to print By jennifer Bertino-tarrant state senator 49th senate district Many residents have noticed two new publications – the Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal – arriving at their doorstep recently.

Unbeknownst to readers, these papers are actually political mailings, intentionally designed to look like weekly newspapers and part of a new network of Illinois publications funded by the Liberty Principles PAC – a conservative political group allowed unlimited contributions and expenditures under

jennifer Bertino-tarrant campaign finance law.

The Illinois Press Association, which represents more than 450 papers throughout the state, recently warned readers about the “legitimacy, integrity and intent” of these publications, and the Illinois State Board of Elections found this network to be in violation of the Campaign Disclosure Act for not including the required “paid for” attributions and colluding with candidates, in violation of Illinois law.

Despite multiple Board rulings, the

publications continue to print and candidates, such as my opponent, continue to conduct interviews.

This is not about the First Amendment – I undoubtedly respect one’s right to free speech. This is about a super PAC going to extreme lengths to mislead readers in order to push a political agenda.

‘cHicago tougH’ Former Raider Morrison helping bring a new attitude to Colts D

ANDERSON, IN – In the Birmingham Bowl, the final game of his junior year at the University of Florida, former Bolingbrook High School standout Antonio Morrison tore multiple ligaments in his left knee - putting his football career in jeopardy.

Morrison had a pair of surgeries less than two months apart and defied all odds by returning to full strength before the start of his senior season and recording 103 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, one pass defended and one forced fumble.

With the 103 stops, Morrison became the first Florida player to record back-to-back 100-tackle seasons since Ed Robinson in 1992-93. He was Named a Butkus Award semifinalist and was a unanimous first team All-SEC selection his senior year.

While his play earned him an invitation to the NFL draft combine in Indianapolis, an infection forced him to withdraw from the combine and go on a six-week regiment of antibiotics – again negatively impacting the future of his career.

MORRISION IS FIRST RAIDER EVER DRAFTED IN NFL

The 21-year-old Morrison fought through all of the adversity and along the way caught the attention of professional team, including the Indianapolis Colts, who on April 30, made the Bellwood, IL native the first Raider ever drafted into the National Football League.

“Those things were unfortunate, but I fought through them,” Morrison said. “They weren’t anything that brought me down. I have worked for it and I have earned this. I have dreamed of this since I was a kid and it is great to be here, but I have bigger dreams and goals, so I have to keep working.”

Morrison was selected in the 4th round, the 125th selection overall.

“This kid is pure Chicago tough,” Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson said in a press conference on draft day. “He is a tough hombre and he plays that way. He plays lights out.”

Colts head coach also raved about Morrison in that same press conference.

“When we talk about getting mindset guys and guys that love to play this game and guys that

Public vs. Private debate continues into new season The public vs. private debate has ramped up in recent years and for good reason.

Private schools have dominated some sports in recent years, which have left many people in public schools upset with the uneven playing field since private schools can “recruit” and can get athletes from all over an area, while public high schools aren’t (supposed) to recruit and students are within a boundary.

The numbers for some sports prove the grumblings as valid, none more so than girls volleyball.

The past five years a private school has won titles at BOTH the Class 3A and 4A level, with the Class 2A champion also coming from a private school three times in those five years. Private vs. private state final matches have also taken place at all three levels at least once during that time.

The only reason why that doesn’t happen more often is the IHSA tries to mask the private school domination by making the schools play each other before the state finals, and even before state at times.

The last non private champion in Class 4A was in 2010, while in 3A you have to go back to 2007! Does this sound like a level playing field to you? Of course not!

While the IHSA’s new system has successful programs move up in classes, all that will do is keep the lower classes private free.

Meanwhile, it gets harder and harder for a public school to win in 4A with Mother McAuley, Benet and St. Francis all in 4A now (even though the IHSA made sure only one could get to state).

For the boys, football is always the topic of discussion when it comes to this debate, and for good reason.

Last year four of the top six classes have winners from private schools, with three out of the top four classes the previous two years having private school champs.

Dating back to at least 2009, at least half of the champions in Class 5A-Class 8A have been private schools each year. During that stretch, Montini has won seven straight championships. It was forced up to Class 6A this past year, which just made things even harder for those 6A schools to win a title. The way the system is set up, there will likely always be a private school powerhouse in Class 5A as well.

Another recent trend has been found in baseball. The past four Class 4A state champions have

been private school teams with Providence winning the past three titles.

All of these private schools play in conferences with other private schools. You don’t see Benet in the same conference as the Naperville schools or Providence with the Lincoln-Ways. That is because they are paired with teams that have the same rules as them, which makes sense. Sure, there are a variety of schools that notoriously struggle in sports as private schools, but they wouldn’t do much better in public school conferences.

So, if private schools are separate in conference play, why should they be competing with public schools in the playoffs? This makes little to no sense to me. A school like Providence can take some of the top players from the LincolnWay school district legally and turn around and knock a Lincoln-Way school out of the playoffs with the benefit of having the top players.

No wonder why some of these public schools have been recruiting. It surely isn’t right, but they know that is the only way to compete in some of these sports. Earlier I mentioned three of the past four girls basketball champions have come from private schools. Before that, a pair of teams went on successful state runs year

The guy is a great competitor. You just put the tape on and after a couple plays it’s like, ‘Wow.’ He’s a wow guy and he popped on the tape.”

Morrison missed offseason workouts with a hamstring injury, but has been working daily to learn the system since the opening of training camp.

“I am just going by the day and trying to help this team win in whatever role that may be,” he said. “I don’t have any selfish goals. I just love football and I love winning, so whatever it takes for me to keep doing those two things, I am going to do.”

In doing that, Morrison is working his way up the depth chart and turning heads along the way.

The best way to make this fair would be to subtract a class or two from public schools and add a private school class, maybe even two if there are enough teams to warrant it. For instance, you could have six public school classes in football and two private classes and have eight solid championship games featuring teams that should be competing with the same rules, as long as they are following them.

In the other major sports you can have three public classes and one private class and in smaller tiered sports you can have two public and one private. Sports that have just one championship can either remain combined or have two total championships.

Under these rules, the only programs at a real disadvantage are the really small private schools who would have no chance against the big boys. However, they typically struggle against smaller public schools as well and if they didn’t they would be moved up to larger classes in the current system anyway.

The joke I have is teams like Benet in girls basketball and volleyball and Wheaton St. Francis

“We lost Freeman as the inside linebacker, but beyond that, we really like Morrison (and) some of our young guys,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said recently in a press conference.

Morrison has also earned the praises of first year Colts defensive coordinator Ted Monachino.

“What we have seen out of him on the field is exactly what we saw out of him on college tape.

You see tough and you see rugged and you see a guy that loves the game,” Monachino said. “The best thing that we have learned about Antonio since he has been in camp is that he is such a football smart kid. He gets it. He understands ball, he understands run fits. He understands where the weaknesses are on certain calls and knows how to play to those things. Antonio has been a pleasant surprise. We knew he was going to be tough and we

“I just play ball and try and do the right things and do what I am coached,” he said. “We have a great staff, a great group of vets on this team – great teachers. There are vets that have welcomed us in as rookies and coaches are teaching us things and everyone is united here and things are going great for this team.”

Being drafted by the Colts brings Morrison back to the Midwest for third phase of his career after spending the last four years down south in Gainesville.

“My parents like it because they are close and they can come to a lot of home games,” he said. “I really didn’t care where I played ball at. It is football and at

the end of that day, that is what I love to do.”

Morrison is not the only former area standout turning heads in Colts camp, as he is in the same rookie class with former Joliet Catholic Academy and University of Illinois running back Josh Ferguson.

“We used to do the power lifting things against each other back in the day,” Morrison said.

“We never played against Joliet Catholic, but I saw him around a lot and it is cool to see a guy

that we used to compete in high school a little bit.”

Morrison’s career began Saturday in the Colts first preseason game at Buffalo where he posted three solo tackles.

The regular season will begin Sept. 11 at home against Detroit.

Morrison will have the chance to travel to London Oct. 2 when the Colts face off against Jacksonville.

He will face his hometown Bears in Indianapolis Oct. 9.

Slammers taking bids for naming rights to stadium The Joliet Slammers, presented

by ATI Physical Therapy, have announced that they will begin to accept bids for a new stadium naming rights partner for their home in downtown Joliet beginning with the 2017 season.

The facility, currently named Silver Cross Field, is an icon of downtown Joliet.

Located directly across from two Metra commuter rail stations and also the Joliet Amtrak Station, it is in a very attractive location from a traffic standpoint.

In addition to a full slate of Frontier League baseball every summer the ballpark is the home for the Illinois High School Association Class 3A and 4A state baseball championships, the home field for the University of St. Francis Fighting Saints baseball, the Slammers Youth Baseball Tournament, the annual

Hopstring Craft Beer and Music festival, and numerous other events throughout the year.

And, with the anticipated addition of artificial turf in 2017 by the facility’s owner, the City of Joliet, the Stadium’s use is certain to grow.

The Slammers are soliciting bids for a new Naming Rights partner as the current agreement with Silver Cross Hospital expires at the end of this season.

The Slammers President, Nick Semaca, said “We are very grateful for all of the support that Silver Cross Hospital has provided to the team since our ownership group began operations in 2013.

They have been a great partner and we hope to continue our partnership with them in some capacity moving forward.”

We don’t usually apply the same concept to emotional payoffs, but there is one fascinating way that a simple, low-risk investment can produce huge dividends.

One good deed, three happy brains When we engage in an act of kindness, a chain reaction occurs.

To begin with, the person doing the act (holding a door, helping carry groceries, even offering a genuine “thank you”) gets an instant boost in the form of the brain chemicals oxytocin and serotonin. Oxytocin helps reduce stress and promote bonding, while melatonin boosts the immune system and may improve sleep.

As an added bonus, the recipient of your act of kindness experiences an almost identical surge of these positive chemical messages. He or she gets a free power-up because of your behavior.

The feel-good train doesn’t stop here, though. Amazingly, what researchers have found is that a third-party bystander, someone who merely observes the act without any direct involvement, also experiences a similar chemical reward. By simply witnessing a positive act, a total stranger can benefit from your actions.

Easy as A-B-C What about the times when we’re off our game, when even the thought of a polite smile to a stranger feels like a Herculean task? Yes, there’s an app for that – a simple selfapplication tool that can be used in almost any trying situation.

In the middle of the 20th Century, the field of psychotherapy began changing rapidly.

Traditional Freudian analysis was pushed out in favor of more active and practical ways of making life changes. One of the notable figures from this era is Albert Ellis, who created a cognitive approach to promoting change.

Ellis labels the activating event, in this case the other driver, as the A in the formula. He calls your reaction (honking, cursing and tailgating) the consequence, or C. We tend to assume that the consequence is a direct result of the event, that A causes C. However, there is a critical piece in between A and C, which is a B, our beliefs. It turns out that not everyone reacts the same way to this situation. The difference is in the way we think about the event. If we say “He has no right; I’ll show him,” we are setting ourselves up for an extreme emotional and behavioral consequence that could end in more harm. On the other hand, if we replace that old thought with a message like “It’s not worth it. Let it go,” our response becomes healthier, which is good for our own sanity, as well as everyone on the road.

In a world where it’s easy to feel disconnected from one another and to grow discouraged by the struggles we see daily, there is still a way to spread positivity, or at least to avoid a potentially painful negative reaction. Either way, it’s an investment that pays an unbeatable rate of interest.

The Frontier League team and senior living community are pleased to announce Alzheimer’s Awareness Night on Wednesday, August 24 at Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet. The Joliet Slammers will take on the Windy City Thunderbolts with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m.

The event will include a night of baseball, family entertainment, a 50/50 raffle and more while raising funds and awareness for Alzheimer s. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter s upcoming Walk to End
