An unofficial end to summer came Wednesday as Valley View School District 365u students packed lunches and back packs and headed out to start the new school year.

Approximately 18,000 students in 22 educational facilities in the Valley View School District 365U started school with a full day and School Safety coordinator Leroy Brown released his annual message to parents about keeping their children safe.

He points out Valley View School District 365U is committed to taking safety seriously and aims to continue to provide one of the safest school districts in the country.

“Our safety plan is more than just words. We have a plan that we practice, because we know that

practice does not make perfect.

Practice creates good habits and we always want to be in the habit of making the right safety decisions for everyone who ever enters any of our schools.

Every stakeholder in Valley View has a responsibility for helping maintain our high level of safety. “ stated Brown. “Our primary defense is the duty for everyone to speak up and tell any of our staff members if they see something that isn’t quite right. Everyone has an obligation to “say something if they see something.”

The district has partnered with both the Bolingbrook and Romeoville Police Departments and the Will County Sheriff to develop a comprehensive security and safety plan. Law enforcement officers visit all schools to have a thorough understanding of the layout of the buildings and the district meets with law enforcement

Instead of waiting for the first day of school on Wed, August 16 to meet their students in class, the teachers and staff of Independence Elementary visited the homes of students to welcome them to the new school year. The official name of the event was “Hittin’ the Streets 2017-18.” The teachers delivered pencils and school event calendars to the students. on a regular basis to talk over strategies and continually improve its practices.

Valley View has installed lockdown alarms in every one of its schools. When the alarm is activated, an alert is sent to law enforcement and the entire building

that a lockdown has been initiated.

Outside, blue lockdown indicator lights are installed at the main and secondary entrances and all corners of each school that will alert anyone coming onto the school grounds that the school is in a hard or soft lockdown. This is especially

important if any type of incident occurs during student arrival or dismissal.

All schools have audible alarms on secondary exit doors including main office panels that will alert staff that someone is opening a door. In addition,security cameras are placed near doors to keep an eye who is entering and exiting.

The district also is working with the police to put a camera monitoring system in place that will allow the police department to monitor the schools from their squad cars. Should a threat occur, police will have the advantage of being able to see inside the building, assess any situation that may arise, and then conduct the proper response.

“We take great pride in our safety record in Valley View School District. At the same, we are never complacent because we understand the community is trusting us with what matters most, the safety and security of students,” stated Brown.

State funding woes face school districts August 13, Senate voted to override gov.’s veto of the school funding reform legislation that would bring nearly $15 million to area schools

The long standing grapple with what is seen as unequitable school funding throughout Illinois continues as lawmakers fight to keep proposed legislation moving despite opposition.

When lawmakers passed the fiscal 2018 budget, state aid became dependent on the separate passage of a new school funding formula.

According to advocates to change the way schools are funded, Illinois’ current system is flawed, in fact, ranking last in the nation in providing school funding to the neediest students. For the past four years, there has been a call to fix this school funding formula. Senate Bill 1 was drafted, aiming to drive dollars to the neediest districts first. Success was made and the General Assembly passed SB1 May 31, with supporters calling it a triumph for school districts across all of Illinois.

However, earlier this month, Governor Rauner issued an amendatory veto of SB1. According to the Illinois Policy Institute the amendatory veto, strips a bailout of Chicago Public Schools and other elements from the bill, including an attempt to prevent a future pension cost shift, and eliminates special subsidies.

As altered by the veto, the state would pay for the normal cost of Chicago teacher pensions going forward. But the other extra funds granted to CPS have been eliminated.

On Sunday, August 13, the Illinois Senate voted to override the governor’s veto of the school funding reform legislation that would bring nearly $15 million to area schools.

In response, Senator Bertino-Tarrant said, “An immediate splurge of dollars seems tempting to rule out the validity of SB 1. However, long term outcomes of the amendatory veto will erode the years of work and lead to larger problems. The education funding bill is the most significant reform in over 20 years; reform that will bring certainty to school funding, as well as fair funding for our students.”

Bertino-Tarrant said many school dis-

tricts would receive short term gains under the governor’s proposal but its longterm effects are unclear.

“Under the governor’s plan, he punishes school districts by removing the hold harmless clause. Districts, such as Plainfield, Valley View and Joliet, where student enrollment has declined, would be faced with less dollars in two years, “ said Bertino-Tarrant. “Furthermore, components placed into Senate Bill 1 to protect suburban schools throughout the 49th District would be eroded with the rising costs of educating our children due to the governor’s veto. The careful protections, discussed for years, to address the needs of our districts have been thoughtlessly dismissed by the governor.”

said the district has have yet to receive any models or printouts of how the Governor’s amendatory veto will impact SB 1 calculations but believes adding TIF EAV to the calculations is detrimental because schools would not be able to access that EAV (in collecting property taxes which fund the school district).

Bertino-Tarrant and fellow Senator Pat McGuire believe SB 1 is the best way forward.

The new formula in SB1 ties school funding to 27 evidence-based best practices that are shown to enhance student achievement in the classroom.

SB1 calculates a unique adequacy target for each school district by applying the same 27 research-based elements to unique district demographics. A summary of SB1 indicated that no district would lose money, keeping the starting point at the amount of funding the district has this year. All new state funding going forward would be on top of what districts currently receive.

SB 1 would calculate the cost of a quality education based on 27 elements, including the number of teachers, aides, nurses and librarians each school district needs to educate the students it serves. SB1 eliminates block grants so CPS will go through the claims process

like every other district. SB1 would determine how much a district should be contributing from local property taxes—this is defined as a district’s “Local Capacity Target.” Districts with lower property wealth are expected to contribute less to the cost of education than higher wealth districts.

“One of the state’s most important responsibilities is to properly fund education,” said State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet. “Unfortunately, for far too long we have not been doing this in a way that is fair and equitable to all of students. SB 1, which changed the way we would fund public schools, was the result of many years of discussion by legislators, superintendents and advocates to ensure that all of our schools are adequately funded. However with his amendatory veto, Gov. Rauner radically changed this legislation and put funding for our schools in jeopardy.”

Yet, others feel bipartisan politics are at play. State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) issued the following statement : “Instead of using Governor Rauner’s Amendatory Veto as a bridge to bipartisan compromise on education funding reform, Senate Democrats instead chose to override the Governor’s Amendatory Veto of Senate Bill 1 on their own, legislation that treats Chicago Public Schools better than the rest of the state.

“I am fighting for more new funding and true equity for schools in my Senate District. Senate Bill 1 takes money that should be going to schools in our area and sends it to Chicago. That is not fair.

I believe a compromise can be found on this issue, but we are running out of time. Let’s get serious and solve this issue together.”

Still others believe that SB 1 is not the answer. State Senator John Curran (RDowners Grove) states that the school funding reform bill fails to address the sweeping school funding inequities across the state.

“I could not in good conscience vote for the school funding bill presented today. Senate Bill 1 does not represent a bipartisan solution to our broken school funding formula. Illinois needs a fair and equitable distribution system that treats all 852 school districts equally-that treats every child equally.

We need to work together to ensure that students in low-income school districts get the resources they need to get the quality education they deserve. I believe bipartisan compromise is possible and my colleagues and I have been willing to return to the negotiations table at any time to achieve real school funding reform.”

In order to make SB 1 law, the House must also override the Governor’s veto.

Romeoville wins state chamber economic award Edies honor outstanding economic development projects completed in the calendar year of 2016 Romeoville once again finds itself the winner of an Edie award, which is presented by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Illinois Economic Development Association (IEDA).

The Edies honor outstanding economic development projects completed in the calendar year of 2016 that bring jobs, growth and prosperity to Illinois communities.

“There were a variety of impressive economic development projects submitted this year. The Illinois Chamber of Commerce congratulates the Edie Award project winners and thanks them for their commitment and investment in Illinois’ future,” said Illinois Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Todd Maisch.

Romeoville was honored for the Amazon Fulfilment Center. As part of Amazon’s rapid expansion in the Chicago area, it invested in a $22 million build-out of the vacant 767,000 square foot building in Romeoville to open as another fulfillment center, employing over 1,000 people.

“We are very fortunate that Amazon chose Romeoville for their fulfillment center. They continue to be a great community partner. We are glad they are being recognized for their contribution not only to Romeoville but the entire region,” stated Mayor John Noak.

This is the fourth time in the last seven years that the Village of Romeoville has been recognized with an Edie. Previous awards have been bestowed for Magid Glove (’15), the Peacock Engineering expansion (’14), and Kimberly-Clark (’09).

This year’s Edie Awards were supported by IEDA and sponsored by Nicor Gas.

Will County offering back to school shots It is important to bring your shots record to your appointment Most people consider August “Back to School Month.” But for many of those returning to school and their families, it may be more important to announce that August is “National Immunization Awareness Month.” And especially for kids entering kindergarten, 6th, and 9th grades; it is time to make sure their immunization records are up to date.

Lisa Carlson and Pat McCarthy of the Will County Health Department encourage everyone in need of a physical and/or immunizations to get them as soon as possible. The longer you put it off, the longer you will probably have to wait. The schools have sent out notices and posted information on line to let everyone know what the latest immunization requirements are. But as Carlson explains, the message does not always get through. “If the kids don’t bring home the notice, and the adults aren’t in the habit of checking their schools’ websites, these requirements can sneak up on them.”

All kindergarteners, 6th, and 9th graders need an updated physical on file; given by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, or

physician’s assistant.

Immunizations are required at kindergarten, 6th, and 12th grades. Kindergarteners generally need boosters of DTaP, Polio, MMR, and Varicella. Sixth graders need Tdap and Meningitis vaccines; while 12th graders need a booster of Meningitis given after reaching the age of 16.

Other requirements include vision and dental exams for kindergarteners and dental exams for 2nd and 6th graders. And in addition, of course, make sure your children have all of the vaccinations they should have had prior to their school days accurately on file; such as Varicella, MMR, and Hepatitis B. Because August is such a popular month for parents and guardians to be getting their students’ records up to date, the Will County Health Department Immunization Office has announced extended hours.

Through August 18, the Will County Health Department Immunization Clinic in Joliet has been operating Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as 8 to 11:30 a.m. on

Fridays. Please remember that all children under 18 must be accompanied by their parent/documented legal guardian, or with an adult who has a note from the parent giving authorization for the adult to accompany their child for immunizations at the Will County Health Department.

In addition, both McCarthy and Carlson want to remind everyone that you must bring your child’s complete shots record and insurance cards with you to the Immunization Clinic.

If you ask the Health Department to look up your shots record, your service will be delayed. McCarthy pointed out that you cannot assume the

Health Department will have your student’s shots record at their fingertips.

“Not every doctor’s office enters information into the site that we use, so you need to bring your shots record with you.”

If the immunizations and physical requirements are not complete, schools, by law, should exclude students until they have the needed health requirements.

Some school districts exclude on the first day of school, while others wait until around October 15.

Either way, it is important to get the needed physicals and immunizations so your children can go to school.

And of course, we must not

forget the importance of getting started on the right foot from the moment your child is born. It is best to have a consistent medical provider or pediatrician who follows the standards for “well child checks.” Those check-ups are usually scheduled for 1-2 weeks, two, four, six, nine, 12 and 18 months; and then ages two, three, and four. Immunizations are needed at the same time as many of the “well child checks.”

During those visits, it is important to bring your shots record each time in case a shot may have been missed along the way. For example, maybe a shot was scheduled at an appointment but the baby was under the weather that day, and somehow it was never rescheduled For assistance and information from Will County Immunizations, you can call 815-740-8143.

The extended hours, in effect until August 18, are also available at www.willcountyhealth.org.

After August 18, the hours of the Will County Health Department Immunization Clinic in Joliet return to the normal schedule of Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays 8 to 11:30 a.m.; Tuesdays 1 to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays 1 to 6 p.m..

The Immunization Clinic is closed on the 4th Friday of each month.

WILL COUNTY FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT

Preserve moves forward on construction projects The Forest Preserve District’s Board of Commissioners approved two bids at its meeting on Thursday, Aug. 10, that will pave the way for improvements at Hammel Woods in Shorewood and asphalt repairs to preserve parking lots and trails.

Also, the Board’s operations committee voted on Aug. 2 to seek bids for an improvement project at Veterans Woods in Romeoville.

HAMMEL WOODS DOG PARK TO EXPAND The Hammel Woods – DuPage River Access work will include the construction of an additional 2.3acre dog play area for dogs that weigh 35 pounds or less. The new dog enclosure will be adjacent to the existing 8.5-acre dog park,

which allows both small and large dogs. The new dog park area also will include a shade structure.

Also planned is the addition of a drinking fountain that can serve campground and trail users as well as dog park visitors and their pups.

The $206,518 contract was awarded to Frank Burla & Sons Builders Inc. of Channahon.

Friends of the Forest Preserve District, the District’s nonprofit fundraising foundation, is seeking donations to offset the cost of some of the work. Part of the fundraising effort will include a “Yappy Hour” from 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 8 at Hammel Woods – DuPage River Access.

Work is scheduled to begin in September and conclude in July

2018, but as is the case with any project, the timeline could be affected by weather and contract management issues. Access to the preserve and the existing dog park will not be affected during the project.

ASPHALT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIRS A $363,399 contract also was awarded to D Construction Inc. of Coal City for asphalt repairs and replacement to the DuPage River Trail in Shorewood, Lake Renwick Bikeway in Plainfield and parking lots at Hickory Creek Barrens Nature Preserve in Mokena and Lower Rock Run Preserve – I&M Canal Access in Joliet.

The work is part of an Infrastructure Maintenance and Re-

placement Program initiated by the Board in 2013. The program outlines a systematic approach and a regular interval schedule for preventative maintenance and pavement replacement.

The project includes the replacement of DuPage River Trail pavement in Hammel Woods from Grinton Grove (Route 59 Access) north to the DuPage River Access on Black Road. Work on the other trails and parking lots will involve pavement patching and overlay.

Work is scheduled to begin in September and end in late October. Temporary trail and parking lot closures will occur and notice of those closures will be posted on the News & Events section of the District’s website, ReconnectWithNature.org.

VETERANS WOODS BID Bids are being sought for Veterans Woods preserve improvements that include the refurbishing and reconstructing of the parking lots at the preserve’s two access areas – Roy F. Hassert Grove and Traders Corner – and work to improve sidewalks and the small trail connection between the two access areas.

The work is scheduled to begin in October and completion could come in July 2018. Picnic permitting has been suspended at this preserve in anticipation of the work beginning, and the site will be closed when construction is taking place. Preserve closure alerts will be posted on the District’s website.

On wars & rumors of wars There will be risks, and results take time

BY CAL THOMAS TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY One month after the election, President-elect Donald Trump made a “victory tour” of states that had helped deliver his surprise win.

In Fayetteville, North Carolina, Trump introduced his choice for Secretary of Defense, Gen. James Mattis, and pledged the following: “We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with. Instead, our focus must be on defeating terrorism and destroying ISIS, and we will.”

He appears to be fulfilling the second part of that pledge, less so the first. Think North Korea, Iran, Russia, and now even Venezuela, which has had new sanctions placed on it following fraudulent elections giving dictatorial power to President Nicolas Maduro.

While Venezuela is no threat to America and Russia is a major headache, North Korea and Iran are clear and present dangers.

These two rogue regimes are committed to developing nuclear weapons capable of reaching U.S. cities no matter what we do.

Clearly this cannot be allowed to happen, but the question is how to stop them short of all-out war that has the potential to kill millions and create a doomsday scenario reminiscent of Cold War movies like “Fail Safe,” “Dr. Strangelove” and “On the

Beach.”

The best offense really is a good defense. When Ronald Reagan proposed his “Strategic Defense Initiative” (SDI) in a nationally televised address on March 23, 1983, many on the left mocked him. They called his proposal science fiction and unworkable, derisively labeling it “Star Wars.”

They’re not mocking that proposal now. The Defense Department has had several successes with its Terminal High Altitude Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system, but only at targets that represent medium-range missiles. In May, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency also “’successfully intercepted’ an intercontinental ballistic missile during the first test of its ground-based intercept system.”

That’s not science fiction.

Readers should revisit Reagan’s speech as a template for dealing with modern threats.

In that address from the Oval Office, Reagan said the risk of war is lessened when the U.S. has a strong deterrence, which he defined as “making sure any adversary who thinks about attacking the United States, or our allies, or our vital interests, concludes that the risks to him outweigh any potential gains. Once he understands that, he won’t attack.

We maintain the peace through our strength; weakness only invites aggression.”

Reagan said the strategy of deterrence had not changed, but what it takes to deter had changed. While acknowledging it might take decades to achieve his Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), Reagan said he wanted to take the first step.

He concluded his address:

“I am directing a comprehensive and intensive effort to define a longterm research and development program to begin to achieve our ultimate goal of eliminating the threat posed by strategic nuclear missiles.

This could pave the way for arms control measures to eliminate the weapons themselves. We seek neither military superiority nor political advantage. Our only purpose - one all people share - is to search for ways to reduce the danger of nuclear war.

My fellow Americans, tonight we’re launching an effort which holds the promise of changing the course of human history. There will be risks, and results take time. But I believe we can do it. As we cross this threshold, I ask for your prayers and your support.”

President Trump should emulate his predecessor, making his first televised address from the Oval Office during which he explains to Americans why North Korea and Iran pose an immediate, or ultimate, threat to the United States. He should announce a fast-track effort to escalate THAAD so it can destroy ICBMs. A space-based, anti-missile system should then complement our defenses in order to protect America and our allies from nuclear attack.

As Reagan noted, weakness encourages tyrants. Tehran and Pyongyang must be encouraged at what appears to be instability in the Trump administration. A credible missile defense system would send them a message more powerful than words.

The Executive Branch and Democrats and Republicans need to reevaluate their morals and actions.

Congress doesn’t respect the Executive Branch and vice versa.

I would like to see some legislators take the lead and say that both sides can disagree on fact, but the personal and imagined attacks must stop immediately. Not only is this unproductive, but we look foolish and immature as a country.

We need to discuss and solve real problems, not deal with personalities, not make rash statements, making sure we are discussing true facts, not assumed and/or unproven facts. Pro-

testing is a freedom, but the lobbyists and the protest organizers appear to be paid professionals and have their own agenda. Let’s track the money and expose the groups, parties, and/or foreign governments behind them.

You were sent to Washington to represent the people, not yourself, and/or some outside group. You can either become part of the solution or continue to be the problem-causing group.

We demand more from all of you and expect it now!

Open letter to federal legislators Thank you to those who support sanctions against Iran, North Korea and Russia. These three governments, among a few others, show contempt for the U.S. and our allies, especially Israel and are a danger to the free world.

Although these actions are positive, the general demeanor and attitude of our government, both Republican and Democratic, is unsatisfactory. Little meaningful work is getting done. This is not only frustrating, but embarrassing.

Indiana’s Swan Lake Resort is a great stay and play destination

While golf is a great game to go out and play on a Sunday for a few hours of relaxation, but it can also be a destination game where a group of friends can escape for a weekend.

If that is what you are looking for – Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana is exactly what you are looking for.

The property includes topnotch amenities including several lodging choices, one being the hotel – which includes both an indoor and outdoor pool – and Putters, a full bar and grill.

But while the food, drink and luxury part of Swan Lake would make it well worth the stay on its own – if you are there for a few days chances are you are there to golf and you will not be disappointed.

The resort offers a pair of 18hole championship courses,

which both are $49 during the week and $59 Friday through Sunday.

Twilight rates are $25 for the weekdays and $35 on weekends.

We played the Black course first. The Black is a par 72 that plays 7,131 yards from the back tees, 6,481 in the middle and 5,272 in the front.

On the Black Course, play opens with the second easiest rated hole on the course – a par4 that plays 366 from the tips.

This straight tee shot is better played to the right to allow an easier iron shot to the green.

A 176-yard par 3 is next. A hole with water on both sides of the fairway, landing the ball short is not a terrible play – but be careful on the pitch because the green will runs drastically toward you.

Hole 3 is a daunting par-4 at 425 yards with water all around.

Flyers ink Iowa’s Basala Lewis University head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost announced that Bailey Basala (Moline, Ill./North Scott (IA)) will join the Flyers, beginning

with the 2017-18 campaign.

Basala, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound guard/forward, is a two-time All-State selection for North Scott in Eldridge, Iowa.

As a senior, Basala averaged 18 points and nine reboundsper-game, while shooting 41% from three-point range. In 201516, Basala pitched in 18 points and seven rebounds-per-game for North Scott.

Prior to his arrival at North Scott, Basala earned Illinois Honorable Mention All-State accolades as he averaged 16 points and seven rebounds-pergame for Moline.

“It is unusual you add a player the caliber of Bailey at this time of the year,” Trost said. “He is an outstanding shooter with great size and can play multiple positions.

“He comes from a great family and is the type of player that we have had a lot of success with here at Lewis,” Trost continued.

“I anticipate that Bailey will have an outstanding career with the Flyers.”

Lewis opens the 2017-18 season on November 5th with an exhibition contest against Illinois State.

FIRST FROM PAGE 11 play into the pin – but for most players, a layup here is a safe play even though you will have a long iron in your hand for your second shot.

Number four is the hardest hole on the course and you will know why. A 607-yard par 5, this hole has a creek bisecting the fairway and a pond guarding the green. You have to be precise here with your drive to avoid the water to the left, but then need to be able to carry the water on your next two shots.

A rare back-to-back par-5s is what is in store here with the 509-yard fifth hole.

Big hitters can get the ball over the hill and get some roll offering a birdie chance and maybe gaining back a lost shot from the hole before.

The birdie on five may be needed, because a tough, 433yard par-4 follows that. The hole plays much easier here from the white tees as they take out the slight dogleg.

The seventh plays at 378-yards and is a hole where accuracy is needed. There is trouble on both sides of the fairway and a straight drive here makes the hole more playable.

A 215-yard par-3 follows and

There is water on three sides of the green, a large bunker to the left and a cluster of three more to the right. Avoiding the trouble is doable with the right weapon selection.

The front nine closes with a 459-yard par-4 that all but guarantees a long iron in your hand for your approach unless you are a monster off the tee.

This sloped green is guarded by a trio of bunkers – so hitting it in the bullseye is your best play.

A 418-yard par 4 opens the back nine, but this one offers hitters a chance to hit with a wide fairway and little trouble along the way.

A dogleg left is what is in store for you with the 416-yard par 4 11th.

There is room to carry the trees to the left and cut the corner a bit – but too far left brings a pond into play.

Did I just say water in play?

Number 12 has water up nearly the entire left side of the farirway on this 454-yard par 4, so staying right and hitting your shot where you need is key on the toughest hole on the back nine.

If you think you get relief with a par-3 next – think again.

This 202-yarder requires some accuracy and club selection to fly the two bunkers flanking the fairway right in front of the green.

Fourteen is a par 4 and plays 396-yards. It is a pretty easy hole as long as you don’t let yourself get psyched out by the pond in front of the green.

The easiest ranked hole on the course is next in the form of a 479-yard par 5 that plays straight as an arrow. If you can avoid the creek in front of the green on your second shot (which I did not) this hole has birdie written all over it.

A 196-yard par 3 is next. Like all the other par 3s on the course, club selection is key – this time you want to club up one to make sure you carry the bunker to the right of the green.

Seventeen is a 451-yard par 4. Water comes into play off the tee, but after that getting to the green is not what you need to worry about. The multi-level green poses a challenge for even the most skilled putters.

Ending the round is another par 5, this one playing at 551 yards. The challenge on the tee is shot is simple – the best play is to dance with the pond on the

left side of the fairway without getting wet.

There is a long approach shot to the green with water in front of the putting surface – accuracy and length are key.

So, you just finished your first round of the trip and it’s time to grab the clubs off the cart and head back to your room and get ready for the Silver course, right?

Not so fast.

If you are playing both days – your bags stay right on the cart and when you arrive the next day your clubs are cleaned and ready for you to enjoy another day at a beautiful course. But, don’t start the day off on the wrong foot – tip the workers for taking care of you and your clubs.

Former Lewis AD Ruddy dies Former Lewis University Director of Athletics and Coach Paul Ruddy passed away on August 1 at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer.

This past March, Ruddy - a 2008 inductee into the Lewis Athletics Hall of Fame - was announced as Lewis’ Lasallian of the Year at the inaugural Flyer Red Dinner.

Ruddy spent 42 years at Lewis, including 25 as Director of Athletics, guiding the Flyer Athletics Department through the most prolific transformation in its history. By the end of his tenure, Lewis had emerged from a program of relative obscurity into a nationally recognized athletics program.

The athletic department’s path to national recognition began almost as soon as Ruddy acquired the title of AD in 1978.

In 1980, Ruddy guided Lewis’ historic move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and the University’s entry into the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

During his time as athletics director, Lewis was a model of

success.

The Flyers captured the GLVC All-Sports Trophy 12 of a possible 21 times, winning the award for the first time in 1983-84, just three years after entering the conference.

Lewis held on to the trophy each of the next seven years, a streak which no other league school has equaled since.

After relinquishing the AllSports Trophy to Bellarmine in 1990-91, Lewis won it back four times over the next six years.

To date, no other school in the conference has won the AllSports Trophy more than Lewis.

On the field of play, Lewis teams won 69 GLVC titles and made more than 100 NCAA postseason appearances during Ruddy’s years as athletics director.

The Flyers had at least one team qualify for NCAA postseason play in 23 of Ruddy’s 25 years as athletics director.

Ruddy founded the Lewis University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979.

He was instrumental in the formation of the Lewis Uni-

versity Varsity Club, the department’s fundraising arm, in 1993. In 1981, Ruddy and Chuck Schwarz, who then was Lewis’ head men’s basketball coach, initiated the annual Lewis Alumni Golf Outing that serves as a main fundraiser for the athletics department.

Ruddy began his Lewis career in 1961 as a physical education instructor, assistant men’s basketball coach and assistant baseball coach.

He became head men’s basketball coach in 1965 and posted a 111-75 record in seven seasons, which today ranks fifth all-time on the program’s head coaching wins list.

Ruddy was chairperson of the physical education department from 1972 until his appointment as athletics director in 1978.

He also served as men’s golf coach.

A 1960 DePaul University graduate, Ruddy was a threeyear starter for legendary basketball coach Ray Meyer and helped lead the Blue Demons to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 1959 and 1960.

The first thing you need to do is go out, and get a real job. I know you have this dream of being self-employed, but right now you’re not doing so well as an entrepreneur.

With a hospitality degree, you can make $30,000 to $50,000 a year within the industry, clean up your mess, and build out the eBay thing on the side. Just think about how quickly you could save up money for a jump into the food truck or mobile food business, then!

Pay your way through it, Nicholas. Don’t sit around scraping by on the kind of money you’re making now and call that win-

ning. You have a real economic engine at your fingertips, because you have the knowledge from the degree you earned. And it’s a valuable degree. If you go in there and bust it, you can escalate yourself upward through that industry in a hurry.
