Romeoville’s four-day festival brought crowds out to enjoy one of the summer’s most anticipated and highly attended events.

Romeofest was held Thursday through Sunday at the town’s center and featured a variety of entertainment. Carnival rides took over the Romeoville Recreation Department parking lot and the fun continued with bingo and family fun events through Village Park and into Deer Crossing Park and the town’s amphitheater.

From country and rock to pop and classic rock tribute bands, many came out to hear performances, grab a bite to eat and catch up with neighbors. Local favorite 7th Heaven closed the fest Sunday night. Younger festival goers came out for the carnival rides, a family

tent with magicians and Jim Nesci’s Cold Blooded Creatures, and a free family laser tag event, among many other activities including a classic car show. A fireworks show capped off the night Friday and a grand finale Sunday marked the end of the festival.

Electronic recycling drop-off opens in Romeoville Romeoville 3rd village with electronic recycling in county

After Will County lost its electronics recycling vendor and collection sites across the area were forced to close, municipalities were left to grapple with new ways to meet the recycling demand fulfilled by its previous 13 drop-off sites.

Electronics have been banned from landfills in Illinois since 2012 and due to changes in the collection service and markets for the materials, the Electronic Recycling Center located in Romeoville was closed in February 2016.

Since March, only one recycling site has been available. However, Will County has been working on a plan to offer its municipalities and since then, two recycling centers in New Lenox and and Peotone were open.

Library delivers first online high school graduates Library celebrates their first Smart Horizons Career Online High School graduates

Continuing on a mission to provide an avenue for education that some adult learners may not have otherwise, the Fountaindale Public Library is embracing initiatives to make sure its patrons have the resources it needs to succeed.

On July 31, Fountaindale Public Library District celebrated their first Smart Horizons Career Online High School graduates, Teresa Raymond, Ryan Callihan and Lynae Cliff, in an intimate ceremony featuring keynote speaker Senator Pat McGuire and other distinguished guests.

These graduates are not only Fountaindale’s first of the program, they are also the first individuals in the state of Illinois to receive their

high school diploma through their library.

COHS, in partnership with Gale, a part of Cenage Learning, is an online high school diploma and career certification program.

In 2014, Fountaindale became one of only three public libraries in the country to offer an initiative through grant funding from The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and The Clinton Global Initiative. This funding allowed Fountaindale the opportunity to award 75 COHS scholarships to prospective students and made the dream of receiving a high school diploma without financial burden a reality.

said Debra Dudek, adult and teen services manager at Fountaindale Public Library District. “It takes guts, perseverance, personal drive, and a willingness to dream big to achieve success in Career Online High School. Along the way,

there are friends, parents, academic coaches and library staff members who help lighten the load of the journey for our participants.”

The initial grant began in 2015 with the Passport to Success program, created to eliminate

the digital divide. The 12-month program was just the beginning, explains Deputy Director Catherine Yanikoski, whose passion is to see the relationship between education and libraries increase.

Working with organizations like RAILS, Reaching across Illinois’ Libraries, and Gale, the goal is to make such online graduate programs affordable for libraries to offer its patrons.

“We are looking at how libraries are positioned to provide education to all---library funding is just as important as school funding,” said Yanikoski. “This is ground-breaking.

Programs like this can help fill the gap for adult learners. We have the research that shows once an adult is past regular school-age, there are not many resources to help them advance.”

Independence educators to ‘Hit the Streets for Indy’ Aug. 11 Independence Elementary School “Hit the Streets for Indy” will begin at 10 a.m.

Independence Elementary School staff and administrators will welcome neighborhood families back to school by going door-to-

door to say “hello” on Thursday, Aug. 11.

“By having a positive experience like this at the beginning of the year,

we hope to increase our community partnerships with our parents,” said Jackie Mitchem, principal of the Bolingbrook school.

“Hit the Streets for Indy” will begin at 10 a.m. If a family is not home, a flyer will be left on the door letting families know the educators stopped by for a visit.

Valley View Early Childhood Center ‘Meet and Greet’ is Aug. 18 Event to be held at B.J. Ward, Irene King, Jamie McGee, Pioneer schools Children who will be a part of the Valley View School District pre-school program during the 2016-17 school year are invited to bring their families to an Aug. 18 “Meet and Greet.”

Attendees will be able to tour their child’s school and classroom,

meet teachers and administrators and drop off school supplies.

The event will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. at B.J. Ward, Irene King, Jamie McGee and Pioneer elementary schools which will all house pre-school classrooms this year, as well as at the Valley View Early Childhood Center.

Pre-school classes begin Monday, Aug. 22.

She began her studies in April 2015 and completed her diploma in May 2016. Ryan Callihan earned his diploma in the career field of Food and Customer Service Skills. He began his studies in March 2015 and completed his diploma in July 2016. Lynae Cliff earned her diploma in the career field of Retail Management. She began her studies in February of this year and completed his diploma in July 2016 —the fastest completion rate Fountaindale has seen in the program.

Fountaindale has 30 COHS enrollees, and with the advent of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System’s initiative, another 10 Illinois libraries will be offering Career Online High School in their districts later this year.

Yanikoski said she believes such programs can be successful because libraries are seen as a trusted resource and an avenue for research.

“Library staff have been helping students with education and research throughout its existence-it’s what we do. Now we can take it to the next level. And patrons need to know that. This is their library tax dollars. This is a resource for them and way to unite learning and libraries,” said Yanikoski.

Organize a linen closet, medicine cabinet, or a drawer – a small space that will be fairly quick and easy and give you a sense of accomplishment.

You don’t have to view organizing as an all or nothing proposition. Set a timer for 15 or 30 minutes and spend just that amount of time working your plan of attack. Before you have time to lose your motivation, it will be time to end the session.

measure your Progress When you have a big goal, like getting an entire room organized, it can be motivating to measure small successes as you slowly progress towards your goal.

When paring down paper piles, for example, weigh your discard bag at the end of each session, with a goal that the bag from each session weighs more than the bag from the prior session. Or count how many bags of trash or donated items you have after each session, or measure how many inches of closet rod space or shelf space you’ve freed up.

Invest in home services program A true benefit to taxpayers will come not from cuts, but from an investment in the program The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is thrilled that Gov. Rauner has suspended his cruel overtime policy within the Illinois Home Services Program.

Secretary [James] Dimas claims the policy saved $5 million. If so, it was a disinvestment in our economy that came at the cost of people with disabilities

losing service, personal assistants not getting paid for their work, and personal assistants being forced to abandon their consumers because of the threat of termination.

A true benefit to taxpayers will come not from cuts, but from an investment in the program. The program allows 30,000 people to live in their own homes

instead of institutions, which costs at least $10,000 more per person every year.

I urge Gov. Rauner to partner with people, with the community to create a new overtime plan. Working together, we can create a plan that supports the independence of consumers enrolled in the program and that fairly compensates workers for the services they provide.

Wisconsin Dells newer course a gem

Wild Rock Golf Club is a part of the Wilderness Resort located in Wisconsin Dells. Built around the turn of the decade, Wild Rock is a great stop for those looking for a golfing spot to get away from the kids for a few hours.

The course was in pristine shape with few divots and even fewer ball marks on the greens, making the greens putt as true as possible.

Before we even began play we saw two deer on the trip to the first hole and then another one passing us on the first fairway.

Speaking of the first hole, it is a 530-yard par-5 from the blue tees (2nd longest). It plays relatively straight but there is a creek in front of the green, making you lay up instead of trying to reach the green in two.

Next is the second hole at 399 yards with a sharp dogleg right. You can cut off some serious distance by playing right, but if you end up hitting it straight, you can go through the fairway. A 446-yard par-4 is next where a straight shot is needed, followed by an accurate approach to a green surrounded by bunkers and a big ridge on the right side of the green.

The fourth hole is the first par-3 that has water creeping out in front of the green, making it difficult at 186 yards. The fifth hole plays at just 325 yards, but it is uphill to the green with a bunker in the middle of the fairway.

At 551 yards, the sixth hole is

long and difficult, but it does play downhill with some great views in the distance. A bunker awaits in the fairway about 100 yards out and another one is just in front of the green with the pin tucked behind it when we played.

Another long downhill tee shot is next at 460 yards, with another bunker in the middle of the fairway. A dogleg left par-4 is next to a short green with trouble left of the green. The front nine finishes with a par-3 with a bunker to each side of the green.

The uphill, 541-yard 10th hole is a dogleg right with a bunker yet again in range of your tee shot in the middle of the fairway. There is another bunker guarding the green. The 11th hole plays 223 yards and is a long par-3 with little trouble in front of the green.

A rock wall guards the 12th hole down the closing portion of the fairway and green, making accuracy more important on the par-4. The 13th hole is a dogleg left, but there is trouble left with a pair of bunkers and thick rough, leading to an uphill and possibly blind approach shot.

The 14th hole is a tight par-4 with a quarry down the left side of the fairway. There is also a fairway bunker about 50 yards in front of the green. the 15th hole is a 166yard par-3 entirely over the quarry, making it a difficult tee shot.

At 415 yards, the 16th hole plays relatively straightforward with some trouble for wayward shots.

The 17th hole is a short par-4 that doglegs a little left, but there a

Football schedules announced

Both Valley View schools will have a new-look conference alignment this football season.

The SouthWest Suburban Conference lost three members from last year and have gone from two divisions to one.

Meanwhile, two of those schools (Joliet Central and West) moved to the Southwest Prairie Conference to join Romeoville and create a 10-school conference.

While the SouthWest Suburban Conference has a random draw without playing each team in the conference, the SPC’s entire schedule is made up of conference foes.

The Raiders (5-5) open play with defending state champion Glenbard West (14-0), but this year they will be playing at home.

That game will be followed by another powerhouse and defending Class 3A state champ, McNamara (13-1) in Kankakee.

Conference play opens with a trip to Stagg (2-7) followed by a home game against Lincoln-Way East (8-3).

The Raiders then play backto-back road games at BradleyBourbonnais (9-4) and Lockport (4-5).

A pair of home games follow against Lincoln-Way Central (4-5) and Thornwood (2-7). Their season comes to a close once again against rival Homewood-Flossmoor (10-

2).

ROMEOVILLE The Spartans (1-8) open their conference only schedule with a home game against Plainfield South (5-5).

That is followed by back-to-back road games against Oswego East (6-4) and Plainfield North (6-4).

Romeoville returns home for two games against conference newcomer Joliet West (4-5) and Oswego (9-3) before a trip to Minooka (5-5).

A home game against Plainfield East (4-5) is followed by a trip to Plainfield Central (0-9), the lone team the Spartans beat last year The season comes to an end against Joliet Central (0-9), a team the Spartans faced and beat when the Steelmen split several years ago.

Johnson defends US Open title in Chicago

Liz Johnson defended her US Open title in Addison last weekend.

ADDISON – Liz Johnson came into the stepladder finals of the US Women’s Open Sunday at Stardust Lanes in Addison as the No. 4 seed, meaning she would have to win four straight matches to defend her championship.

Johnson did just that, defeating Shannon Pluhowsky 208-143 in the championship match to win her fifth US Open title.

“The higher the pressure the better I focus,” Johnson said. “I felt more comfortable today and made the shots when I needed to. In these conditions, filling the frames was crucial. This was one of the biggest grinding tournaments I have ever been apart of. That is what makes it a major. To be a part of the category of having five US Opens, it just hit me.”

In the first round of the stepladder finals Johnson defeated Kelly Kulick, the No. 5 seed, 207168. In the second round Johnson overcame a foul on the first ball in the 10th frame to top New Hui Fen of Singapore 215-200.

“I think I was more in shock of the foul because I had already thrown my second ball,” Johnson said.

“Every other time I was two inches behind the foul line, so I might have just gotten a little fast. I took a deep breath and had to make another good shot.”

To advance to the finals, Johnson defeated Shayna Ng of Singapore in a back-and-forth match, 209-180,

overcoming a deficit in the seventh frame.

Pluhowsky qualified as the top seed after an impressive final qualifying performance, shooting totals of 1,774 and 1,702 to vault much of the field.

“When things are going good it is easy to be excited,” Pluhowsky said. “I came out today and the lanes didn’t play similar to how they played all week. You have to take the

The top 47 players made the cut.

Megan Szczepanski of Lockport came in 64th place (4,558), Taylor Bailey of Joliet was 87th (4,459), Autumn Lee of Plainfield was 108th (4,323) and Allyson Ware of Lockport was 137th (3,947).

CHICAGO A SUCCESS The tournament marked the second time the US Open has been in Chicago in recent years and it was well received.

On top of the views and the wildlife, another interesting thing about the course is the combination of tree-lined fairways and links style golf. There are pot bunkers all over the place and fescue as well, both links-style

traits, but there is also trees and forests all over the place, which isn’t known in a links course.

That makes it quite unique.

That, as well as the great shape of the course and the challenges, make this course a good course to play when traveling to the

Wisconsin Dells area.

You probably want to book early though as tee times in the summer fill up fast.

Be sure to try to keep your ball on the same side as the flag though on the green as the slopes on many of the greens can lead to tricky putts.

I’m a partial resident to the Chicago area right now and I’ve bowled in this center many times. The fans here are awesome. It was a great crowd this afternoon and it was awesome to see. We have so many great female bowlers out there, it is exciting.”

“It was great,” Pluhowsky said.

“The fans showed up all week and were excited. The Pro-Am was great.

There were a bunch of kids here who were excited about bowling and they are the future of our sport.

Chicago is a great bowling city.”

Tournament finals from Lexington, Kentucky, Rochester, New York and Seminole, Florida were all finished in Addison after the qualifying earlier in the summer at the host cities. It makes it for a long day for the broadcasters and some bowlers who are in multiple TV finals, but it makes sense for the production crews and relatively tight budgets for bowling.
