Apartment complex proposed near I55 Romeoville Properties, LLC, proposes to develop the property as a high-end, 216 unit multi-family apartment project

Final development plans are taking shape for additional apartments in Romeoville near the I55 corridor.

The village recently approved a special use permit for Village Place Apartments by Edward Rose and Sons and S.R. Jacobson Development Corp to develop 12.8 acres located on the south

side of Normantown Road, just east of Brunswick Lane.

According to village documents, Romeoville Properties, LLC, proposes to develop the property as a high-end, 216 unit multi-family apartment project.

Romeoville Properties LLC will acquire the property, construct the improvements and own and manage the community as a long-term investment.

The property is currently vacant and considered ideally located for new rental housing units, considering its proximity to Weber Road and I-55 and walkability to both commercial and employment centers.

The developers report that industry trends call for high-end residential apartment communities and that research shows demand will significantly increase in the area over the next five years with more of the Millennial and senior population looking for such amenity-based housing.

The development will consist of six residential buildings oriented around open spaces and recreational amenities such as the central clubhouse.

The apartment units will be housed in three-story buildings, reducing the footprint size so that more than 45 percent of the site can be dedicated to open space and resident amenities, consistent with the desires of lifestyle renters, according to the developer.

A series of internal walkways will provide connections between resident buildings and community amenities, including connections to both existing and future regional trail systems.

The six residential buildings include 216 individual apartment units. This includes 90 one-bedroom, 114 two-bedroom and 12 three-bedroom units. Buildings two, three, and four will include premium units with unique views of the Lily Cache Slough and O’Hara Preserve located just south of the property.

The entrance for the new development is proposed to be located off Normantown Road.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month State of Illinois requires vaccinations to protect children from a variety of diseases before they can enter school MORE INFO The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is recognizing August as National Immunization Awareness Month as a reminder that vaccines protect against a number of serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. Vaccines give parents the safe, proven power to protect their children from serious diseases like measles and whooping cough (pertussis).

“Most young parents in the U.S.

have never seen the devastating effects of diseases like measles and polio, but those diseases still exist,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “Children who don’t receive recommended vaccines are at risk of not only getting those diseases, but of having a severe case of those diseases. You can’t predict if your child will become sick with a vaccine-preventable disease, or how severe the illness will be, but you can provide the best protection by following the recommended immunization schedule and getting your child the vaccines they need, when they need them.”

Many vaccine-preventable diseases are still common in other parts of the world. For example, measles is brought into the U.S. by unvaccinated travelers who are infected while in other countries.

When measles gets into communities of unvaccinated people in the U.S. (such as people who refuse vaccines for religious, philosophical, or personal reasons), outbreaks are more likely to occur. Illinois experienced a measles outbreak in 2015 in a daycare in which 12 of the 13 cases were infants too young to be vaccinated.

Vaccines don’t just protect your child; they help protect the entire

community�especially babies who are too young to be vaccinated.

The U.S. has the safest vaccine supply in its history. Vaccines are thoroughly tested before licensing and carefully monitored after they are licensed to ensure they are very safe. The vaccination schedule also has been scientifically shown to be safe. Although children continue to get several vaccines up to their second birthday, these vaccines do not “overload” the immune system. Vaccines contain only a tiny amount of the antigens (the parts of the germs that cause the body’s immune system to respond) that your child encounters every day, even if your child receives several vaccines in one day.

When a child develops a disease like whooping cough, chickenpox, or the flu, they may miss several days of school. It could also mean lost money because a parent or caregiver will need to stay home to provide care and make trips to the doctor. Families who need help paying for childhood vaccines should ask their health care professional about the Vaccines for Children program, which provides vaccines at no cost to eligible children who do not otherwise have access to recommended childhood vaccines.

College is a good thing ... to a college student

BY GREG SCHWEM Tribune Content Agency I entered my daughter’s room to find her knee-deep in a pile of cardboard boxes, plastic containers and garbage bags, all stuffed to the gills. The scene resembled someone preparing for, or returning from, the mother of all yard sales.

“What’s with the purge?” I asked.

“Check the calendar, Dad. I head back to college in two weeks. Just getting an early start on packing.”

“So, you’re actually going back?” I said. “To experience what will be known as your junior year?”

She stopped trying to cram a toaster into a container that looked as if it were made for holding little more than toast.

“Why wouldn’t I go back?”

“You’re a Republican, right? You voted for Trump?”

“Yes, and yes,” she confirmed. “But what does that have to do with my decision to complete my college education?”

“You obviously haven’t read the recent Pew Research Center poll,” I said.

“Nobody has polled me about anything,” she replied, and then added, “Wait, some dude at the basketball game last January was asking questions about our Spring Break plans. Was he from Pew?” I enlightened her on the recent poll from the non-partisan fact tank concluding that 58 percent of Republicans feel college has a negative effect on the country, a 13 percent increase over last year. Colleges are still viewed in a favorable light overall, as Democrats overwhelmingly support their existence, according to the poll. And young Republicans such as my 20-year-old daughter still, on average, view college favorably.

But I wanted her views on higher education before dropping her next tuition check in the mail.

“Does that opinion have anything to do with the fact that you’ll be celebrating your 21st birthday at school this year?” I asked.

“Yes, I mean no, of course not. It’s all about the education, Dad. You want me to have a diploma, right?”

“That was always the goal,” I said.

“But now I wonder what might happen if your first job interview finds you sitting across the desk from some crusty, longtime Republican donor who looks at your college experience on your resume the same way you looked at broccoli when you were 5.”

“That’s another great thing about college,” she said. “I don’t have to eat vegetables.”

“That’s worth the price of tuition,” I said. “But what about the stodgy Republican who may not hire you because of your academic history?”

“I’ll wear a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat to my interview,” she said.

“That should help.”

Not totally satisfied with her answer, I shifted the conversation to other findings from the Pew study. “What is your view of banks?” I asked. “Positive or negative?”

She didn’t hesitate. “Definitely negative. The ATM across from the student union is, like, always busted.”

“Good to know. My point is, do you think banks and financial organizations are affecting this country negatively?

What about churches? Labor unions?

The media?” The Pew study also found markedly different opinions of these institutions, based on political party preference.

“Dad, I’m about to pack my bras. Can you turn around please?”

I did as I was told but didn’t stop the conversation. “Honey, I’m just curious about whether your political views are impacting your opinions on other organizations. You’re 20 and...”

“Almost 21,” she interrupted gleefully.

“Whatever. I guess I just want to be ready for a world where I may have trouble finding a place to worship. Or deposit my social security check, provided there’s enough money for me to actually receive a check. Or turn on the local news at 11 p.m.”

“You’re never awake at 11,” she said.

I sensed the conversation was ending.

“Have fun at school, honey,” I said. “Just promise me that you’ll find a Democrat, have some serious conversations and try to find common ground on issues.

That’s what this country needs right now.”

“Not a problem,” she said. “I do know two of my roommates voted for Hillary.

Yet we’re ALL in agreement that we should go to Cancun for Spring Break.”

Route 66 Raceway in Joliet features many different events all year for those who love to watch cars go fast – very fast.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, Route 66 will hold another one of those events, however there is a twist.

The 2017 D’Arcy Buick GMC Route 66 Classic, which promises an ‘unprecedented level of content that pays homage to the early days of drag racing and hot rod culture,’ will provide entertainment to gear heads, but there are also events for everyone else.

“The heart and soul of this event is the drag racing and the nostalgia with the 1979 cars and older that will be on the track,” said Sara Palya, Route 66 Communications Director. “But, we have revamped it so now it is not only about the cars on the track, it is about the

cars in the car corral. It is about that hot rod culture, so we incorporated a group called the Chicago Brush Masters who are known for being at the World of Wheels and they do the almost dying art of pin striping, lettering and air brushing. We have a vintage faire that has anything from vintage records to clothing to furniture.

There is a pin up contest, we have two live bands playing vintage music, there is a Mystery Machine bounce house and temporary tattoos for the kids. There really are things for kids to do, for females to do and for gear heads to do. There is something for everybody.”

The price is also something that suits families well.

Tickets for the event are $20 per person, however, for every adult ticket, a children’s ticket can be purchased for a child 12-yearsold or less for only $5. If you have SEE CLASSICS PAGE 14

Johnson nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year The NCAA announced on Aug. 1 that former Lewis University women’s basketball player Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) has been nominated by the Great Lakes Valley Conference and an independent selection committee for consideration for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The nominees represent college athletes from 16 different sports spanning all three NCAA divisions.

Of those recognized, 58 nominees competed in Division I, 34 in Division II and 53 in Division III. “This honor is very well deserved by a woman that blazed an incredible trail on Lewis’ campus,” Lewis Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek said. “Her accomplishments align with the values that the NCAA hopes are instilled in all student-athletes.”

Johnson won the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award this past May, awarded to one male and one female student-athlete by the GLVC, based upon academic excellence, athletic ability and achievement, character and leadership.

The South Holland, Ill., native, who was the 2015 GLVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, was a three-time All-GLVC First Team selection and two-time All-American (2015, ‘17).

Johnson, who left Lewis as its alltime leading scorer, was a member of five Flyer teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2015.

Academically, Johnson received both her bachelors (communication studies) and masters (business administration) degrees from Lewis University with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

She is a six-time recipient of the

Br. David Delahanty Award - given to Lewis student-athletes for academic excellence, and a six-time Academic All-GLVC selection.

Johnson was a 2015 Capital One Academic All-America First Team selection and NCAA Elite 89 winner for academic excellence of all participants at the 2015 NCAA Tournament. She was also selected as the Lewis Senior StudentAthlete of the Year.

She was active outside of the court and classroom as well.

Johnson was a member of both the Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Committee (2012-17) and Student Athletic Advisory Committee (2011-16).

She was a yearly volunteer camp counselor at Lewis University Youth Basketball Camps (2011-16) and was a volunteer pilot leader for Lewis University Welcome Days in 2014.

She often volunteered at various Chicagoland Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries, while helping fundraise for Make-A-Wish Foundation and Ronald McDonald House charities.

In early September, the Woman of the Year selection committee will name the Top 30 honorees, which include 10 women from each division.

At the end of September, the selection committee will select and announce nine finalists, with three from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will select the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year from those finalists.

The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual banquet Oct. 22 in Indianapolis.

The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for

excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.

SOCCER Lewis University head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles announced on Monday (August 6) that Floris Blom (Zwolle, Netherlands/Centre for Sports and Education/Hanzehogeschool Groningen), Kristian Havran (Franklin Park, Ill./East Leyden), Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling), Marty Manzke (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), Dorian Moreno (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) and Samu Shaloyan (Speyer, Germany/Friedrich-Magnus-Schwerd) will join the Flyers, beginning with the 2017 campaign.

Moreno, a 5-foot-10, 135-pound midfielder, has competed for both the Downers Grove Roadrunners and Deportivo Chivas Soccer Clubs for the past five seasons.

Blom, a 6-foot, 185-pound defender, competed for Be Quick 28 (2012-14; ‘15-’17) and Oranje Nassau (2014-16). He was selected once as the Player of the Year while playing for Be Quick 28.

Havran, a 6-foot, 165-pound forward, was a three-year letterwinner for East Leyden and a four-year member of the StudentAthlete Honor Roll. As a senior, Havran totaled 15 goals and eight assists on his way to All-West Suburban Conference and Pioneer Press All-Area Honorable Mention accolades. That performance helped lead East Leyden to a mark of 13-0-6 in 2016, including a berth in the regional finals. In 2015, Havran finished with 16 goals and six assists, as East Leyden finished with a record of 16-2-5.

In addition, Pink Heals of Joliet will have a vehicle display outside the main gates of the stadium beginning at 5:30pm.

The game is set to start at 7:05 pm vs the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Taking on partners not a good investment It’s a gradual process, but I don’t teach or advise people to go into partnerships or borrow money DEAR DAVE, I want to build an 18-unit apartment complex, but I don’t have enough cash to do it on my own.

My net worth is around $400,000, and I have $100,000 I can put toward this project. It is estimated to cost $1.2 million. Would lining up investors, who will take a percentage of the profits, be the same thing as acquiring debt?

JAY DEAR JAY, It wouldn’t be the same as taking on debt because if there are no profits, the investors get nothing.

It’s more like taking on partners and what you would call an equity position — meaning they’re owners in the business. They may have only limited rights as owners, but essentially you’re taking on partners.

There’s a method that was used in the old days that’s still avail-

able today called syndicating a piece of real estate. You would set yourself up as the general partner and set the investors up as limited partners. They would be limited in their input, because the general partner runs the show. They can be given the lion’s share of the tax write-off, and the depreciation schedule. Traditionally in those models, the general partner takes less of the depreciation schedule but gets a fee for running things and has a position of ownership.

There’s a restriction under Blue Sky Laws on the number of limited partnership units allowed before it becomes a situation where you’re selling stock. Check with your state and current securities

laws to be sure of the exact number to avoid any impropriety. You can do a limited partnership or syndicate a piece of real estate, but they can both be very messy and time consuming for the money you get out of it.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a good method for you to buy an apartment complex at this stage of your investing life. It’s more like a way for you to get into the business of running a bunch of limited partners with a ton of paperwork and bookkeeping thrown in. It doesn’t sound like a lot of fun to me.

If I were in your shoes, I’d use the $100,000 in cash to buy a money-making property — maybe a nice rental house. Then, save your money, invest and buy another one. And again, save the money, invest and buy another one, over and over again. It’s a gradual process, but I don’t teach or advise people to go into partnerships or borrow money.
