VVSD expands Chromebook rollout District accelerates project timetable

When classes begin Aug. 16, Valley View School District 365u students and educators will be the beneficiaries of one of the largest simultaneous 1-to-1 Chromebook deployments in Illinois public schools.

Nearly 12,000 VVSD students in grades 4 through 12, as well as student in the VVSD Secondary Transition Experience Program, will have individual access to district-provided Chromebooks thanks to the acceleration of what was originally a three-year plan was launched last school year when all 7th and 8th grade student received the devices.

Originally the plan called for 6th, 9th and 10th grade students to be added to the rollout this fall, but students and educators found the Chromebooks to be so useful for curriculum delivery and learning that 11th and 12th grade students were added to the list. The district also decided to expand the program to 4th and 5th graders who were not part of the original threeyear plan.

“Chromebooks have been a great addition to our classroom, especially in the area of assessment,” said Gretchen Perez, 8th grade math teacher at Lukancic Middle School. “Students get feedback immediately, and look at data to determine areas of strengths and

weaknesses. This allows us to drive our instruction to better meet the needs of students.”

“We believe that technology enhances our students’ learning far beyond the four walls of our schools,” said Astrid Welch, VVSD’s executive director of technology.

“Plus giving our educators access to key digital resources is critical to ensuring all of our students are college and career ready.”

Every middle school, high school and S.T.E.P. student will be able to use their own Chromebook throughout the school day and then take it home with them. Students in 4th and 5th grade will only be able to use their Chromebooks during school hours.

Current Technology Department staff members, as well as an additional staff of 30 task force team members, including several former VVSD students, are hard at work this summer with a goal of making sure the devices are in classrooms ready to use within the first two weeks of school.

To further support teaching and learning in VVSD’s 21st Century classrooms, the Technology Department has expanded the Wi-Fi infrastructure to provide 40,000 simultaneous connections district-

wide. Internet access will continue to improve, according to Welch, with a goal of reaching the state infrastructure goal of 100 kbps/student.

Highly skilled technicians will ensure Chromebooks are repaired and in good working order throughout the school year should there be problems.

“Making sure the infrastructure, support and professional development are all in place for a successful launch has taken quite a few years and many long hours to get to this point, but we’re excited to see how more students can benefit this year,” Welch said. “It has been a highly successful collaboration between our schools and the Technology and Curriculum departments to design and implement this initiative.”

Individual schools will coordinate with the Technology Department to provide digital citizenship lessons to all VVSD students that will provide an overview of expectations on using a Chromebook in the classroom, basic Internet safety tips and how to be a good digital citizen.

The Instructional Technology Team will continue to provide educators with training and professional development as well as “Just in Time” support from Instructional Specialists and Teaching & Learning Coaches as they continue to integrate technology into curriculum, instruction and assessment.

“The 1:1 Initiative, and tools like Google Classroom, is my dream come true,” said Sally Green, 8th grade language arts teacher at Brooks Middle School. “This is the best thing to happen to me during my teaching career; to be able to work with kids on this powerful platform.”

The Technology Department will provide online resources for families on how student should use Chromebooks at home, including information on free Wifi locations, and low-cost internet solutions.

Families who currently have children in after-school care in their VVSD schools will be able to attend their programs for the extra hour for an hourly fee. VVSD afterschool care programs are able to handle students who sign up on a one hour drop-in basis for an hourly fee. Several private day care facilities in the area have informed VVSD they have room for care on early release days.

When she was an undergraduate at Lewis, she interned at Trinity Services’ Oak Center for Behavioral Health in Lockport and was impressed by Trinity’s focus on helping the clients there achieve greater independence, she said.

“My ultimate goal is to make art,

write and save the world, and this was just one idea that I had that could work toward that lofty goal,” Bishop said. “I believe in the power of art. It beautifies. It protests. It invokes strong emotions, and making it can be so healing.”

The art featured at Fine Arts for Finer Lives will be an eclectic mix of jewelry, paintings, mixed media, cloth dolls, pottery and photography. All art can be purchased, and prices range from $5-$400, approximately. All purchased pieces will be available for pickup after Aug. 11.

Abilities Expo celebrates community, puts resources under one roof

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST On June 23, I spent approximately five hours at the Abilities Expo 2017 Chicago at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center. The Abilities Expo is a three-day celebration of the disability community. This is the event for those of us with disabilities to get resources and tools to assist us in our daily lives.

I had an opportunity to talk with David Krose, the president/CEO of the Abilities Expo and its website abilities. com.

The Abilities Expo has been serving the disability community since 1979 with originally only two events—in Los Angeles and just outside of New York City. This Abilities Expo was started by one man’s frustration that his local wheelchair dealer had a very limited selection. David Krose explained that this small idea to give the disability community the opportunity to go shopping for different kinds of mobility tools was revolutionary for the 1970s.

However, in 2008, David and his business partner, Lew Shomer, acquired the Abilities Expo business without really having any personal connection to the disability community.

Nonetheless, under the amazing leadership of David and Lew, the Abilities Expo has grown over the intervening 9 years to eight cities each year.

Each year, members of our disability community can attend, free of charge, any of the Abilities Expos across the country including: northern California, southern California, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Washington D.C., outside of New York City, and for the first time this year, Toronto, Canada.

Today, the Abilities Expo continues to offer admission free of charge, workshops, and an events arena with demonstrations including adaptive sports, wheelchair dancing, and service animals.

The reason for taking over the Abilities Expo business was not a personal one for David Krose. Even though his grandson is on the autism spectrum and David had some friends with disabilities, these circumstances had no

impact on him taking ownership of the Abilities Expos. It was merely the fact that he fell in love with the community at these Abilities Expos. David fell in love with what the show was trying to do — bring disability resources under one roof for the disability community to access.

The area of the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center is divided into three halls but Abilities Expo Chicago chose to use all three of them as one big hall. This made the show easily accessible for people with various disabilities. Typically at most other expos, the workshops would be in meeting rooms in a different part of the hotel. Unique to the Abilities Expo, the workshops and events arena are all located in the same area as the show room floor. It’s all “under one roof,” as David says.

The workshops use a service called “CART,” which is like a court reporter who types everything being said by the speaker. For attendees who are hearing impaired or have difficulty understanding but are able to read, then they can read the transcriptions on the big screen next to the speaker.

David explained to me one difference between the New York City and Chicago Abilities Expos. In New York City, Micah Fowler, star of ABC’s Speechless, attended the Abilities Expo in May 2017 in New York City.

Approximately six months ago, David had received a phone call from Micah’s mom, Tammy, who had explained Micah was a big fan of the Abilities Expo and had been attending 15 years. In New York City’s Abilities Expo, Micah held a 30-minute question and answer session and spent 90 minutes taking photographs with over 300 attendees.

The Abilities Expo is geared for the

entire disability community — both those with visible and invisible disabilities. When David first got involved in the Abilities Expo, he wrongly assumed that this was one big homogeneous community. However, David has come to realize that the disability community has different levels of diagnoses and various needs that people have. A large majority of the people with disabilities who identify themselves on the registration form as being a person with a disability, about 85 percent, have mobility challenges.

This includes wheelchairs and powerchairs, for example. Many of the products that lend themselves to a trade show environment are for people with mobility challenges.

According to David, there are very few products for people with vision or hearing impairments or for people who have developmental or cognitive disabilities. The distributors of mobility products tend to come to the Abilities Expo to reach a large audience. On the other hand, the other not-for-profit organizations and resources come to the Abilities Expo to share their resources across the disability community. In 2016, the Abilities Expo Chicago reached approximately 3500 adults and 800 kids.

Westmont’s Donovan earns POY

It is often difficult for baseball players from small schools to grab the attention of the top colleges and professional scouts.

That was never the case for Joe Donovan.

Sure, his brother Charlie paved a road for Joe, but the younger Donovan hit that road like a runaway 18-wheeler.

As a freshman, he was the starting catcher on a Westmont team that placed fourth in the state in Class 2A and he spent the next three seasons assaulting the Sentinel record books – ending his career holding 20 career records.

He holds the mark for team wins (97), games played (145), runs scored (205), hits (210), extra base hits (99), home runs (36), grand slams (4), RBI (154) and slugging percentage (.891).

This season, Donovan batted .523 with a .628 on base percentage and a 1.171 slugging percentage – all Westmont single season records.

For all of that, Joe Donovan is the first-ever recipient of Voyager Media’s Charlie Donovan Player of the Year Award.

This season is the first year the award is named after Charlie Donovan, who was a three-time Voyager Media Player of the Year and died in November of 2015.

It will continue to bear his name going forward.

“This year was a lot of fun,” Joe Donovan said. “I had a part where I had a mini slump, but I came out of it and just had so much fun.”

Playing for a Class 2A school like Westmont, often times Donovan’s numbers are not looked upon as serious as those by players in Class 3A or 4A. “In my opinion, I can hit at any level,” he said. “We played 4A schools. I hit two doubles and a homer off Mt. Carmel and they are as good as they get. Sometimes it can be even harder to hit at a 1A or 2A level. In the summer, I am pounded with fastballs in the 90s and high 80s and legiti-

JOE FROM PAGE 9 mate sliders and breaking balls that you get zoned in to a certain way of hitting and then in the spring there are some kids that can hardly get the ball to the plate on a consistent manner. I would argue that for good hitters, it is almost easier to hit good pitching.

That is no excuse for not hitting off bad pitchers, because I think

“I have friends that go to big schools and I get text messages and Snapchats joking around saying that if they were at my school, they would be doing the same thing I am and it gets taxing. As much as I just have to play my game, when the awards come and your peers qu estion the level of competition, it is aggravates me.”

Offense is not the only part of Donovan’s game, as he is one of the top defensive catchers in the state as well.

“From his sophomore year through his senior year, he called almost every single pitch,” Westmont coach DJ Cocks said.

“He shut the running game down.

We hardly had anyone steal on us.

He creates strikes for our pitchers by the way he sets up and frames.

He is the best blocker I have seen back there as a high school kid and I played college baseball and I think he was better than a lot of the guys I saw in college.”

Donovan said his mental make-up is the reason for his well-rounded success.

“I attribute my success in baseball to my mind and how I go about it,” he said. “Granted, I very fortunate to be blessed

with athleticism and I have put in the work to be a good physical baseball player, but my mindset is more important. I go into it, realizing I can fail so if I do, it doesn’t affect me. I think the biggest thing is compartmentalizing my analytical baseball mind, my emotional baseball mind and my present baseball mind. Those three subsets of consciousness are so intertwined that they can really mess up each other. You have to realize when emotion is necessary, when diving deep into the analytics is necessary and when to just tone all that out and just make an athletic move.”

While Donovan is headed to the University of Michigan next season, he was drafted a few weeks ago by the Chicago Cubs in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft.

If not for his plans to head to Ann Arbor next year, he would have been a much higher selection.

“It was unbelievable (to be drafted),” Donovan said. “Had I wanted to sign professionally, I would have been a higher draft pick, so that was really nice, but that being said it was an incredible honor to be drafted. I grew up the biggest Cub fan, Charlie was a huge Cub fan, last year I went to the World Series Game 5 – I might have shed a few tears when they won the World Series. I was one of those dummies at the Cubs’ parade sprinting to be up front. So, just the culmination of all my life as a Cubs’ fan and getting drafted by then, it was unbelievable and even though I knew I wasn’t going to sign – a few tears were shed.”

“Jojo is a three-sport athlete who has been at the top of our lineup throughout the season,” said Fitzgerald. “He leads our team in batting average, onbase percentage, hits, runs and stolen bases and has taken away several extra base hits in the outfield.”

JORDAN MIKEL, PLAINFIELD SOUTH Western Illinois-bound senior was 4-3 on the hill with a 2.48 ERA, striking out 65 batters in 45 innings. He hit .330 with 10 homers and drove in 24.

BRADY MILLER, PLAINFIELD NORTH At the plate, he hit .333 with a .393 on base percentage and a .547 slugging percentage. He has 39 hits with six home runs, with 36 RBI and scored 25 runs.
