The month of July is filled with community events to delight all ages. U2 tribute band Elevation treated the crowd to the music of Bono and the Edge in true style opening the season’s first “Rockin’ the Ville” concert series June 26.

When Quantum Foods closed its doors May 1, 900 employees were told not to come into work.The day they may go back to work may be near.

West Liberty Foods, LLC announced that it has closed on the purchase of substantially all of the assets of the Bolingbrookbased Quantum Foods.

Police arrest 2 involved in robbery of pizza delivery woman Third juvenile is also being questioned in the incident Rene Ramos, 19, and Deon Brown, 21, both of Romeoville, were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery after allegedly beating and stealing from a female pizza delivery person at gunpoint at 10:24 p.m. June 24 on the block of Dunbridge Lane.

A third juvenile is also being questioned in the incident.

Romeoville Police reported that while the woman was making a delivery, she was approached by three men wearing hoods who pulled her from her car and demanded money.

The driver was forcefully sat on the back seat of the car and held at gunpoint by one subject who was African American, while the subjects demanded money, and rifled through the car.

This one offender struck the victim in the head with the firearm during the encounter.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken along with the victim’s cell phone.

The subjects also took pizzas from the victim and ran away on foot eastbound from the scene.

The victim suffered a minor head injury, which did not require medical attention.

The pair was transferred to the Will County Detention Facility to await a bond hearing.

A warrant was also issued for Ramos for probation violation.

Jonathan Willigman, director of meat packaging, processing, and manufacturing, of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1546, said the union and West Liberty are currently working on an agreement that will bring back the workers from Quantum with many of its employees from Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Joliet and Chicago.

Romeoville celebrates Independence Day Fireworks will start promptly at 9:15 p.m.

What started as merely a fireworks show is slowly growing to be a community tradition.

Join the Village of Romeoville on Thursday, from 7 to 10 p.m., July 3 for a live band, food, games, and fireworks.

All activities are held at Deer Crossing Park, 1050 W. Romeo Road.

“It really has become quite a bit more,” said Mayor John Noak. “It has grown to a large event for the community and we want everyone to come out.

Noak said the event has gone from a simple picnic to live bands and various activities for the whole family starting at 7 p.m. Grab a spot to watch the fireworks anywhere along the grounds from village hall through the Romeoville Recreation Center.

High Infidelity will be performing and various food vendors will be on site including the non-profit Hampton Park Social Athletic Club.

In addition, the Romeoville Fire Department urges residents to leave the fireworks to the experts and stay safe.

So, here’s a question for all of us heading into the November gubernatorial elections: Do you prefer a candidate who tells you stuff you don’t like to hear but goes into detail, or one who says some cool things in cool ways but doesn’t explain much?

As I see it, that’s our choices for governor so far. On the one hand, you have Gov. Pat Quinn who wants to extend the unpopular income tax increase and holds out the possible repurposing of the state detention facility in Joliet as a job-creating carrot, or a guy who says Illinois is in terrible shape, needs to have tax cuts and worker’s comp reform, as well as term limits for those conniving, professional politicians in Springfield. But doesn’t say how.

The U.S. and Illinois supreme courts already have said term limits are unconstitutional. I know there are a lot of closet Libertarians out there who would like to see that passed, but really, do we need another law on the books? And this one telling us who we can’t vote for? Sounds like back door disenfranchisement to me.

Yes, Illinois is in terrible shape, and I would love Bruce Rauner to tell us how we are going to

get out of it. Worker’s comp is a mess, there are too many taxes and other burdens on business.

I would love to have heard the plan from a businessman who has raised millions as a venture capitalist.

We had our first chance to see Rauner in person at a Joliet Chamber luncheon Friday where he was the main speaker. He and Lt. Gov. candidate Evelyn Sanguinetti of Wheaton made the rounds during lunch, introducing themselves to attendees, taking pictures with them and having a great time.

Rauner and Sanguinetti each got up and spoke to the crowd about how we need to change things in Springfield, how four of the last eight governors (seven, actually, including a Republican) have wound up in prison, how small business is the backbone of the state and how the current administration is breaking those backs.

So, what’s your plan, Bruce? I hear Rauner actually does like to answer questions, but his handlers don’t like him to. So there was no question and answer period after his talk Friday, as most guests generally do. There was only a brief press conference afterward where the Chicago media, when not cannibalizing each other, were peppering him with

All of this wraps up without so much as a mention of what he would do about the pension crisis, what he would do about worker’s comp, how he would cover the cost of reducing taxes to businesses and others, his position on the South Suburban Airport, the Illiana, education … or anything else.

When I ran out of the Victorian Ballroom after him, calling his name, I was intercepted by a woman who rather rudely chastised me for doing so, instead referring me to Rauner Flack Central. I have heard some of my colleagues have had even ruder treatment.

So instead of answers, Rauner tells the crowd four Democrats told him they were going to vote for him because they liked the cute commercials with his wife.

Venture capitalist, indeed.

In our village of Romeoville, we have many entities of pride. We all agree that character counts.

I am writing about Mary, the leader and person that personifies our community.

She is the Director of our “Chamber.”When I talk to her on Monday mornings, I am amazed at all she does for our village. The statement “hope” is learning through knowledge – is an example of her character.

I do believe you can never stop educating yourself and others.

I write about the “Chamber” because it does have a transparent

hometown atmosphere that Mary emulates. She does “give back.”

Mary has a board of 12 she reports to. There are 30 non-profit chamber members. She educates and contacts new residents about local doctors, dentists, phone numbers for the electric, gas, and fire and police departments’ facilities and others. She also organizes village events.Only some examples are State of the Village, Cinco de Mayo, wine tasting, golf outings and many more.

Mary’s wish list is more members, an assistant, and more community leaders to participate.

This will make our village “better and stronger.” We are already now

on that path.

Out of darkness, into public knowledge, we are all learning through education.

I now understand some of the functions of the “Chamber” because of Mary.

This writing is a “stepping stone” to promote our village and community. This we can leave as a legacy for the future residents.

We display our village with pride for the thirst to learn and integrity through public knowledge. The Chamber holds up our village of Romeoville like eagles wings.

This demonstrates strength to everyone.

Witnessing the travesty of conditions in other countries is a memory that begs for inspiration and aid.

So says members of the Community Christian Church who are organizing a garage sale to raise funds for a group of orphans in Uganda, Africa.

After visiting Uganda, Bob Barbas said he couldn’t get the children out of his mind, and he and fellow church members who formed the group Roots of Restoration decided they wanted to help. This, their second year, the group will host a garage sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 12 at 179 Highpoint Drive, Romeoville.

The group had started with collection bins in parking lots and have now orchestrated the garage sale event to broker items for dollars to fund tuition for at least 14 orphans and school supplies for at least 30.

Barbas said he had the opportunity to meet a pastor in Uganda and has visited the country and Haiti as well.

Spartans’ Krueger named to all-area squad

Romeoville’s Josh Krueger is a member of the Voyager Media All-Area team.

For the second year in a row, Westmont shortstop Charlie Donovan posted off the charts numbers, batting .495 with 47 RBI, 50 runs scored, eight doubles, four triples, six home runs and 37 stolen bases and for the second year in a row, Donovan has been named the Voyager Media Baseball Player of the Year.

It is Donovan’s lack of care for stats and numbers that make him such a dangerous player.

“Over the years I have realized that if you play for the team, the individual result will show up,” said Donovan, who committed to the University of Michigan prior to his sophomore year. “If I just stick to the team approach, the stats will be there. If it is all about me and I try and hit a home run every time up, the stats will go down. It is really cool how it works out that way and I think a lot of guys could benefit from that.”

One at-bat this season sums up his mind-set as a player.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning of the supersectional, one run across the plate and the Sentinels still without a hit, Donovan stepped to the plate and instead of trying

to hit a home run or rip a double in the gap and clear the bases, he calmly hit the ball to the right side of the field, reached on a fielder’s choice and got the second run across the plate.

“Because that game was so tight and the game was so crucial and those runs were huge, the only thing that mattered to me in that at-bat was the RBI,” Donovan said. “I didn’t care about getting a hit or a home run or being a super hero, I just wanted to get that run in. I was just looking to get the ball on the ground and get the run in.

“I take pride in trying to play the game the right way. I try not to think too much about statistics and just try to win.

Winning comes from doing the little things that maybe nobody notices, but that have a big impact on the game.”

This season, Donovan also served as the team’s closer, pitching in seven games and posting a 3-0 record with three saves, allowing no runs and only five hits to 13 strikeouts.

That attitude and ability helped Donovan and the Sentinels to the school’s best-ever finish, tying for third in state after rain cancelled the third-placed game at state.

“He can do everything for you, and I mean everything. He can go out there and go four-for-four, steal bases, knock runs in, play great defense at short and if the game is close he will come in and close the game out on the mound,” Cocks said. “That is in his instinct and character and that, added to his talent, makes him even more special. He will be remembered as an individual player because of all the records he will break at Westmont, but he wants to be remembered with the team.”

“He pitched all of the first games in our conference series,” Plainfield North coach John Darlington said. “Has been a competitor each game, with or without his best stuff. He really showed good leadership for our young staff.”

NICK DALESANDRO JCA dual threat batted .409 with 28 RBI, seven doubles, four triples and three homers. On the mound, he went 7-1 with a 1.39 ERA and 74 strikeouts.

“If you looked up a hard-nosed ballplayer in dictionary it would be him. Just a tremendous allaround player. He could play any position.”

The senior could hit, too, with a .458 average and a .594 onbase percentage while driving in 23 runs.

JOE DONOVAN C h a r l i e ’s y o u n ge r brother, a freshman, anchored the We s t m o n t s t a t e tournament team behind the plate—he threw out just over 46 percent of attempted base-stealers— and was their leadoff hitter.

He hit .400, had a .540 on-base percentage and 10 doubles, which led the squad.

“They (opponents) know they don’t want to steal against this guy because they get thrown out half the time,” said Cocks.

“He’s the best catcher in the (I-8) conference if you ask me, even as a freshman. He’s another guy that just dominates.”

MIKE FORMELLA Lockport ace posted a 7- 2 record, allowing 47 hits and 11 earned runs in 61 innings pitched. He had 1.26 ERA with 64 strikeouts.

“Mike led the 2014 SWSC Blue Champion Lockport Porters on the mound all year,” said coach Andy Satunas. “He went 5-0 in conference with a 0.365 ERA and 42 strike outs in 38.1 innings.

Mike’s only two losses this year came at the hands of Lincoln Way North (2-1) and Providence (4-3). The 2014 Lockport Porters would not have had the success that we had this year without Mike’s leadership both on and

off the mound. Mike pitched 11.1 innings over two separate days (Monday and Thursday) in our 16-inning win over Carl Sandburg to help our team get back into the conference race. During this performance he struck out 12 hitters and scattered 11 hits while yielding only 1 run.”

CODY GROSSE J o l i e t West junior shortstop batted .500 on the season with 51 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, 17 RBI and scored 45 Runs. He stole 15 bases and was only caught once. He also walked 18 times and struck out only three times in 127 plate appearances.

Premier Golf Four courses offer variety Last week I talked about the great experience of playing 63 holes of golf in a day in the Man vs.

Golf Challenge at taylor’s take Treetops Resort in by scott taylor Gaylord, Michigan.

This week, I will go into greater detail about the courses we played.

We started on the Premier Course, which, in my opinion, was the toughest of the courses.

The greens were absolutely brutal (toughness wise, they were in great shape). There were multiple holes where I thought I would be in great shape but my ball trickled down a slope.The par-5 7th hole I hit a great approach set that rolled back down the hill to the front of the green,inches away from having a 5-foot birdie putt. The next shot rolled right back down to me. It is those shots you see on TV when you watch the pros play the more difficult courses.

The variety of holes is also great as you have both short and long holes, uphill and down hill shots. The fifth hole allows you to attempt to drive the green if you are a big hitter. The eighth hole is an 80-foot drop par-3, while the ninth hole has the green uphill one or two clubs worth.

The only major water on the

hole is at the par-3 11th with water down the right hand side, making you play your tee shot over the water.At the end of the day, I think this was my favorite course to play and it gave me a feel of what the pros play on. Even at seven in the morning and with the wet dew on the ground, the greens were fast!

Next we played the Tradition Course, which is a links style course. Being in the northern Michigan area,however,there were still some trees to navigate around.

While this course is probably the least popular of the five atTreetops, it still is a great course to play. It is quite a bit shorter in length than the Premier and is less difficult, although not easy. After the tight fairways at the Premier, there was more space for errant tee shots at the Tradition.

The greens were still pretty fast and the rough was still tough to navigate out of. The front nine has a couple of doglegs and has a couple of holes that are nearly drivable by the longest of hitters.

I am normally a fan of these risk/ reward holes and my favorite is the par-4 13th hole.It plays at 293 from the blue and 275 from the white.

But unlike the couple of reachable holes on the front, this one seems to have more trouble and a more difficult green to navigate, with a bunker 240 out to the left. The course closes with a par-5.

The par-3 seventh hole at Threetops is the hole Lee Trevino aced for $1 million in 2001.

Threetops, the famous par-3 course, was next up for us. Much to my surprise, the course played quite short given the professional event that was played out there.

The only hole over 170 yards from the tips is the third hole, which plays 219 from the back. However, there is a 140-foot drop that makes the hole much shorter. It is spectacular to play. While all were great holes, the seventh hole was my other favorite. It is the hole of Lee Trevino’s ace for $1 million in 2001 and is only 150 yards from the back, despite playing 80 feet downhill. The slope from back to front on the green though makes it tough to putt.

All of the greens proved to be tricky.Not only were they lightning

quick, they were tough to read and if you were stuck on the wrong side of the slope, a three-putt was likely. I definitely don’t think I will play a par-3 course like that one.

We finished off the Signature Course, the most expensive of the courses.The first hole was actually my favorite hole as there was a big drop off the tee on the par-4.

The course seemed to play slightly easier than the Premier, although it was still plenty tough.

The greens always seemed to be tough to get to, especially the ninth hole, where the pin was tucked right behind the bunker. Luckily, I played for the center of the green and it sloped towards the pin. It is one of those courses where you could play it much better with the

experiences.

As was the case with all the courses, there was not much water on the course as only one hole provided the threat. However, the course provided several other challenges along the way. I really enjoyed the 15th and 16th holes as the 15th hole had a very narrow green that was uphill on the par5 and the 16th hole went back downhill off the tee.

Overall each of the courses were unique. I hope someday I will be able to play the Masterpiece as well as it looked awesome as well. Even if you can’t play 63 holes in a day, taking a weekend up to Northern Michigan to play the courses over a two or three day span would be a great investment.

Line gains momentum in NHRA Pro Stock Jason Line wheeled his blue Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro to the final round at the 17th annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago this weekend, and the KB Racing NHRA Pro Stock competitor sees momentum gaining as the tour passes the midway point on the strenuous schedule.

“The weather here was very hot and humid; this isn’t a typical KB and Summit Racing kind of day,” said Line. “We generally don’t shine in these conditions, but we did this time, and I feel pretty happy that KB Racing was able to make progress here. We kept running better and better, and that’s very respectable on a day like this. My Summit Racing Camaro was good all weekend, and I’m very happy to be able to say that. It makes it a lot more enjoyable going to the next race, that’s for sure.”

Line,of Mooresville,N.C.,is No. 4 in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series standings, and bonus points earned during qualifying – plus points garnered for round wins earned on Sunday – have further secured his enviable position in the top 10.

Qualifying in the No. 4 position based on a best time of 6.604-second at 208.78 mph set up an opening-round meeting with Mark Martino for the first time in a year; the two most recently raced at this event last season. Line came to the starting line with a vengeance. He was out of the gate first and then laid down the quickest pass of eliminations, a 6.601, paired with the second-quickest speed of the day, 210.24 mph.

In the second round, Line flew to a 6.630 at 209.75, the second quickest elapsed time and fastest speed of the round, to defeat a charging Shane Gray’s 6.667, 208.26. Next on the checklist was Gray’s teammate,

CODY PAZIK Pazik, a senior, was “the backbone of our pitching staff,” according to Niles West coach Garry Gustafson. Pazik fanned 62 in 42 1/3 innings, was 4-3 and had an ERA of 2.48. Hitting in the middle of the Wolves’ lineup, he batted .392 with 23 RBIs. “Cody is the type of kid that he’ll take ball five days a week if you give it to him,” said Niles West coach Garry Gustafson.“I’ve told all my lower level guys that they should exemplify how Cody plays. He plays the game the way it should be played.”

BOBBY PENNINGTON As a junior last year, Pennington was the Hawks’ lock-down closer, helping the team advance to supersectional play. He didn’t miss a beat making the switch from closer to ace starter, posting a 9-1 record and an ERA of 1.62.

“He’s a quiet kid who doesn’t show much emotion and just pounds the strike zone,” said Milano. “He’s been our horse all season; just a hard worker and listens well. He’s also batting in that number four spot and he hits the ball hard.”

Q&A: Chuck Lorre, John Wells on state of TV Quantity jeopardizes show’s drama, quality

Chuck Lorre is currently the sitcom’s reigning king, producing four CBS comedies, including “The Big Bang Theory.” John Wells might have stewarded the last genuine dramatic mega-hit in “ER,” as well as acclaimed series such as “Southland” and “Shameless.”

Both call Warner Bros. home, which was where they convened to discuss the TV business and the writer/producer/showrunner’s lot - including the unique camaraderie of the writers’ room, their discomfort with suits labeling what they do “content,” and a mutual love of the medium behind all those hugs they’ve received (understandably, given their successes) from Warner Bros.

Variety: How do you generally feel about the state of the TV business now?

John Wells: I always say the

same thing, which is we just tell stories. The way in which they are distributed changes, but as long as people are interested in hearing stories about their lives and other lives and worlds, for the writers and for the people who are creating this material there are many more opportunities because there are more places to do it and allow you to do it for a much smaller audience.

The thing that’s in peril - and it’s been in peril forever, so I don’t want to overstate it - is the state of what network television’s going to be, which has supported the entire ecosystem forever with syndication. The pressure that it’s under means the whole rest of the ecosystem is ultimately going to be under a lot of pressure, which people don’t talk about a whole lot.

Chuck Lorre: It makes me think of something (producer) Marcy Carsey said to me 20 years ago.

I was developing for them, and

I said, “What network would this go on?’” and she said, “What difference does it make? Those are trucks.They bring the product to market.” I always loved that.

They’re just trucks. What’s inside the truck is the only thing that matters.

Variety: We’re also seeing this wave of mergers. As guild members, how much does that concern you?

Wells: I’ve lobbied. I’ve actually testified. I don’t think wildly massive conglomerates - I understand why they want to be big and what the advantages are for them - are an advantage for the viewer and the people making the content. I don’t see how it’s going to be beneficial to anyone other than the larger company to have that kind of control over the means of distribution. It doesn’t lead to better material, which is what we’re always really concerned about.

Lorre: The first thing you learn when you work for a big company like Warner Bros. is synergy’s a myth. Human nature is self-interest

If you looked at a pilot for any successful show, go and look at it two years later. You’re looking at a different show... and the agendas of these little fiefdoms are doing what they just normally do, which is pursuing what’s good for their careers and their little part of the company.

When I came into this, I had this very naive notion that we’re all in this together, like a big club.

It’s not a big club. It’s medieval is what it is.

Variety: Chuck, in terms of sitcoms, do you feel like the last man standing?

Lorre: No, I really don’t. I was very much influenced by what Phil Rosenthal did, because he brought it back to the basics of two people talking. When it’s well written, well produced and acted, it’s fascinating. Two people talking on a couch can pull you in.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” did that. Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen sitting on the couch talking about something that was interesting and funny was enough. That brought

me back to what I learned on “Roseanne” way back when - 25 years ago - that it’s a play, really.

What we do is putting on a play, except we get do-overs.

Variety: Do you see value in the development process? Or would Wells:Well, I’d always rather just go shoot it, just because it removes a lot of the anxiety in the middle of it. But there’s tremendous value to seeing it and changing it. Even if you just go and shoot it, you’re going to make a number of adjustments based on what you actually see. Once you start something, you have an idea of what it’s going to be and then you see what it actually is, and oftentimes a character changes completely, somebody interacts with someone in a different way, stylistically it changes.

Lorre: But you don’t necessarily know the show until, God, really, episode six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
